legends have been told

of a buried treasure
shrouded in danger.

It's one of the great mysteries
of World War II.

secretive and strange

has gotta be buried
in that mountain.

‐ In a covert operation,

infamous Japanese General,
Yamashita

allegedly buried
thousands of crates

throughout the Philippines
near the end of the war.

‐ They were just taking
anything of value,

gold, silver, weapons,

even military secrets.

Yamashita's treasure
could be anything.

of a key eye witness...

‐ A team of Americans
is on the hunt

for this lost chapter
in World War II history.

what is the best way to get

This, I believe,
is the back door.

The other one is marked.

‐ Peter Struzzieri and his team

believe they have
found a back door

into a legendary
maze of tunnels

hiding Yamashita's treasure.

‐ We have no idea
what'll be in there.

Won't know until we
actually get in and see it.

‐ The pattern of the boulders
closely matches a symbol

carved into a nearby rock,

perhaps a clue left
by the Japanese Army.

If there is a tunnel,

shifting the rocks
could cause it to collapse.

Another concern,

it's believed
the Japanese Army

left booby traps
on this mountain

to guard the treasure.

But moving these boulders
seems like the only option.

it's the easiest way

you're gonna be to get in
and find out what is here.

suppose we do this?

the excavator up here on top.

And if we can get
this big rock to move,

that should give us
the room to get in.

Could be rigged
with explosives and stuff.

But if you're up there,
you should be out of the way.

If anything comes out,

it'll blast and come out
and go across this way

because these rocks will
be like a cannon barrel.

I didn't say it'd be
a walk in the park.

It's gonna be tricky.

But this is the only plausible
way to get in right now.

So we need to check it.

Be real careful.

I believe there
is something down there.

And I believe this is
the way to get in to it.

But we won't know
until we get it open.

a tunnel entrance,

there may be
a lost record of it.

According to the research
of Martin

and other Golden Lily scholars,

the Japanese forces
created specific maps

of the Yamashita
treasure sites.

So‐called Blue Series maps
were used like blueprints

to build the tunnels and vaults,

while Red Series maps
were issued to members

of the Japanese Royal Family

and marked the locations
of booby traps to aid recovery.

Roger Roxas claimed
a World War II era map

helped him find some of
Yamashita's treasure in 1971.

‐ The Japanese soldier
gave a map to my dad...

‐ But since a map for this
mountain has yet to be found,

Brad and the team
are on their own.

to come here and peel away

what nature and time
have concealed.

have to work around.

It's not gonna
be a fast exploration.

But all it's gonna
do is take some time.

this the "Boulder Field".

to clear away the rocks,

back at base camp,

Peter and Martin
receive a call

from head researcher,
Bingo Minerva.

‐ I just finished
running down that lead

that JD Foringer gave me.

‐ Days earlier,
Bingo met with JD Foringer

who claims his brother
was treasure hunting

in the Philippines

for a company that may
have had CIA connections.

‐ If you want to know more
about the CIA's initiatives

in the Philippines,
then I know a guy.

I could hook you up with his
point of contact information.

‐ He put me in touch
with a man who apparently

did some treasure
hunting in the Philippines.

‐ What's this guy's name?

‐ He says it's too dangerous
for him to reveal his identity.

He's already
out there in Manila.

He says he's heard
about your work on the mountain

and he has
some information for you.

But he wants to meet
face‐to‐face.

But I trust JD
and it's coming from him.

So, I mean, I think it's
worth at least listening to.

Peter travels to Manila

to meet the confidential
informant.

‐ This guy claims
that he knows the truth

about Yamashita's treasure.

He picked the spot
where we're gonna meet.

And of all places,

it's a World War II cemetery
for American soldiers.

‐ To agree to appear on camera,
the confidential informant

insisted his voice and
appearance be disguised.

‐ I'm Peter.

How did you get
involved with all this?

‐ Bob Curtis, he gets
involved with Marcos, right?

‐ Bob Curtis was
an American mining engineer

who claims he was contacted

by Philippine President,
Ferdinand Marcos,

to help him disguise some
of Yamashita's stolen gold.

‐ So how do you know all this?

‐ He admitted that?

‐ President Marcos wished to
talk to me about

the possibility of handling
re‐melting of bars.

‐ How much treasure...how much
gold are we talking about?

at where treasures could be.

a treasure hunting

the Black Eagle Trust
is supposedly a source

of unofficial funding
for the CIA

to bankroll covert activities.

It has been speculated
the CIA took an interest

in Yamashita's treasure as a way

to keep the coffers of
the Black Eagle Trust full.

‐ Arriving back at the mountain,

Peter updates John
about his meeting.

‐ So was the trip worth going?

‐ Well, he said that,
uh, he worked with Bob Curtis.

‐ Wow.

‐ Maybe he did,
maybe he didn't, I'm not sure.

But he certainly
knew a lot about him.

‐ Did you ask him
if he had any information

pertaining to our area?

‐ I tried to get
as much information

as I could out of him,

hoping that we'd get some
clues for our mountain.

‐ Right.

‐ But he wasn't
willing to share too much.

But he did tell me
we underestimated

the treasures
in the Philippines.

And that Yamashita's
treasure is way bigger

than we could ever estimate,
into the trillions.

‐ In the trillions?

That's incredible.

‐ He claims that the CIA
has found treasure here.

And has it stowed away
in a secret slush fund,

the Black Eagle Trust.

‐ I've heard rumors
about that before,

but nothing concrete.

‐ Several respected journalists

have alleged
the Black Eagle Trust

was a secret fund
established by the CIA

at the end of World War II

to finance covert operations
around the globe,

including coups
and assassinations.

Supposedly named
after the Black Eagle

stamped on the gold bars
of the German Third Reich,

the fun allegedly consisted
of Nazi war loot

and may have included a portion
of Yamashita's treasure.

Although unverified,

the confidential
informant's claims

support these speculations.

‐ Well, I'm not‐‐
not really sure,

but at least one good thing
came out of this meeting.

‐ With all the people
that are looking

for treasures
in the Philippines,

I'm more convinced than ever,

there's something
on our mountain.

of preparation,

Brad is ready to move
the back door.

‐ The rest of the team
retreats to a safe distance

in case any Japanese booby traps
are still active.

They are hoping
the boulder blocks a tunnel

that contains boxes of treasure

just as Grandpa described
seeing during the war.

‐ The truth is, we don't know
what's behind this rock.

We're hoping to find a tunnel
and it'll be easy to get into.

‐ It's our only choice left,

This is the last hope to get
into this tunnel on this side.

What's happening down there?

‐ The team has
just moved the boulder

they believe is blocking
a back door entrance

into a tunnel running straight
through the mountain.

‐ What are you seeing, John?

‐ I don't see anything in here.

It's a bunch of rocks.

‐ Is it the entrance?

‐ No.

I don't know
what's going on here.

When we ripped open
the back door rocks,

we were expecting
to see a tunnel.

But the entrance
may be collapsed.

It's just very frustrating.

‐ It's a little disappointing.

I was thinking it
was gonna be something here.

‐ I do know that there
ain't no treasure in there.

It really is frustrating.

I thought, you know,
this was it.

‐ Right now,
I'm very discouraged.

This really doesn't
make any sense.

You know, all the testing
that we did,

the GPR and the drilling,

and it all pointed
to the void space.

And we've proven
that the void space is there.

But we still can't get in.

‐ We've got this symbol
which is a Golden Lily symbol

saying it is a back door.

So I still believe
there's something there.

‐ Yeah. Definitely,
there should have been a tunnel

or a void behind
this group of rocks.

But what did we find?
Just another group of rocks.

‐ Right.

‐ We couldn't access the void.

We couldn't access the tunnel.
‐ Right.

‐ So maybe we're
doing something wrong.

Maybe we've been thinking
in the wrong direction.

Maybe a tunnel going from
the turtle to the back door

and we envisioned it
in a straight line.

Okay, maybe it doesn't go
in a straight line, all right?

We want this
to be our key tunnel.

But maybe we should think
along a different line

and search in other places.

I'm thinking is, you know,

we got the void space right
there behind the back door.

We're right at 40.

in a void space now.

void in another direction

that's not going
towards the turtle.

Maybe there's a directional
stone, a pointer.

That'll point us
to the end of the tunnel.

We'll search in
a different direction

other than the turtle
looking for some other clues.

‐ And if we can find that,

maybe that'll
put us in a new area

where we have a better chance
of getting into this mountain.

‐ The team goes searching

for any directional markers
near the void's location

hoping they will indicate
the direction of a tunnel

and possibly
lead them to an entrance.

‐ I've seen a lot of crazy
things on this mountain.

The signs and symbols

are unlike anything
I've ever seen before.

I think everything
here is connected.

And we're not gonna quit
until we figure out

how everything goes together.

way up here.

‐ Well, let's head
towards those big rocks.

‐ Watch out for snakes.

‐ A pretty sizable
rock right there.

I'll clear it off a bit.

Sometimes the symbols
are conflicting

and they don't add up.

If I've learned anything,
you've got to keep at it.

It looks like this rock here

has been carved by somebody.

And they enlarged it
to make it very definite.

‐ Can you sight right down it?

‐ It's just like a gunsight.
Look at this.

Right up the mountain.

‐ What are you getting?

‐ It's like roughly
northeast direction.

‐ I really think that
this rock is important.

That rock may give us
a direction on how to go.

There could be a tunnel
in this direction,

up the hill,
up the mountain.

‐ Returning to the location
of the original void,

the team prepares to conduct

electrical resistivity
tomography tests

in line with
the gunsight rock

hoping to determine the
direction of a possible tunnel

heading north up the mountain.

‐ Ready to get moving?
‐ Yep. We're ready.

‐ We cut a couple sticks
so we can have...

‐ We are hoping to find
a void space in this location.

Let's pray we can get a tunnel
location out of this.

to determine the shape
of the ground below.

Results above 1,000
indicate a dense ground layer,

while readings below 1,000

may indicate the presence
of a void space.

used this same technology

to detect a possible void

on the other side
of the mountain.

‐ I'm seeing a big void space.

‐ That void space is looking
like it's about 20 feet tall

and about 15 feet wide.

a truck inside that!

for 40 feet deep now.

‐ Now they're hoping to verify
the existence of a tunnel

heading north up the mountain
in line with the gunsight rock.

That's in the range
of a void space.

We're gonna see if we can
get to the bottom of it,

actually see
what the height is.

‐ So that means that the void

is at least 10 feet in height.

It's a great sign
that we found a void.

I just wish it was a little
shallower than 40 feet,

but we'll deal with it.

‐ We found a good void space
possibility there.

That could indicate
that it's a tunnel.

‐ The team returns to base camp.

‐ We did a quick scan
of our back door site

and got some really good data.

I crunched that data
and here it is.

There she goes.
‐ Is that what I think it is?

‐ That's what you think it is.

‐ This mark right here?

‐ And it's at 40 feet.

It could very well be a tunnel.

at 40.

Here is the gunsight rock.

I scanned for the downhill side.

And then I scanned all the way
across the uphill side.

‐ So it's uphill?

‐ It's uphill

going to the north
in a straight line

with the gunsight rock.

‐ So now we have
two voids at 40 feet.

We have one here
and we have one here.

‐ Correct.

‐ We had a hard time digging
that first 40‐foot void.

‐ Right.

‐ She's pretty solid!

I can't get through it.

‐ So chances are,
we're gonna have a hard time

digging at the second
40‐foot void.

‐ I agree.

If there's a tunnel here,
I want to find the entrance.

‐ Well, how we gonna do that?

So based off the heading
we took off the gunsight rock,

anywhere up the mountain there,

we should be able
to find, hopefully,

a purported entrance.

‐ I wonder if the LIDAR

will show us something
more accurate.

Let's go to the LIDAR map.

‐ Weeks ago, the team
brought in Jamie Young

and his LIDAR drone

to conduct an aerial scan
of the mountain,

creating a digital map
of the terrain

devoid of foliage.

‐ This right here could
be a cave entrance.

‐ It was through this LIDAR data
that the team discovered

the cave containing
the story rock.

‐ Holy crap, and there's
markers on these rocks.

‐ Now they hope the LIDAR
may reveal a tunnel entrance

up the mountain not visible
on a regular map.

‐ Oh, yeah, a lot better.

‐ Show me where the turtle
is in the back door.

‐ So the turtle rock
is right over here.

And the back door
is like right around here.

The gunsight rock is right
around on the tip

of this little blue piece.

‐ And we want
to look north of there.

‐ Okay. I see all
these trails here,

here, here, and here.

But nothing that
comes down to our spot.

‐ Yeah, which is kind of weird.

‐ What's this spot
right over there?

Doesn't that look
strange right there?

That really interests me.
Zoom in a little more.

Yeah, that's...

‐ I'm not sure what that is.

‐ That is really drawing
my interest,

that particular spot.

‐ What are you seeing, Pete?

‐ I don't know.

It looks very curious to me.

There's nothing else
like that on the map.

It looks like a flat area.

natural to you guys?

So here's the turtle rock here.

Here's the back door rock.

Here's the gunsight,

and according to the LIDAR map
of its location,

it looks like that
should be right up in here.

But I don't see anything
there except a bunch of trees.

‐ I think I see something.

All right, we have
a line from here to here.

‐ Right.

‐ And you say

the flat spot
is roughly right in here.

‐ Give or take, yeah.

‐ So if we come
from here to here

and then from here to here...

‐ Oh, my God.
‐ We have a triangle.

‐ And you know how I like
symbols with signs?

And you're not
gonna get much better

than this triangle right here.

‐ And the gunsight rock
is pointing right to it.

It's pointing north just
about right for that area.

‐ If I'm right, there'll be
something of interest here.

‐ This is a pyramid on paper.

‐ What should I look for?

‐ A pyramid.

Look at the points
that we have.

This is an important spot
right here on the map.

We gotta get
the guys together

and go up there
and take a look.

‐ The next day,
the team heads up the mountain

to look for the anomaly they
identified in the LIDAR data.

‐ Putting all these pieces
together, it's hard.

When I'm awake,
this is all I think about.

And when I'm sleeping,
this is all I dream about.

This treasure's been waiting
for me my entire life.

And now I'm closer
than ever to finding it.

some incredible things

on this mountain.

Yamashita and his men
didn't bury this in a day.

And we're not gonna
find it in a day.

But every symbol,
every shovel full of dirt,

every step up the mountain,

brings us one step closer
to solving this mystery.

pretty flat, right?

‐ You think this is the area
that we found with the LIDAR?

‐ Got to be.
I mean, this seems pretty flat.

least 15 feet wide.

‐ Looks like it was cut
into that side of the hill

there a bit too.

Like a bulldozer
came in here one time

and cleared it away
to make this flat.

The treasure, how did
it get up the mountain?

‐ Even the ground
feels different.

It's not all rocky and clumpy.

‐ Yeah.

‐ Look at the grass.

Now this is all compacted.

So it must be super
hard under there

and the weeds can't
even grow this high.

‐ I think this is it.

‐ We must be close.

‐ The flat terrain,
compact soil

and LIDAR data
point to a road.

The question, was it created
by Japanese forces

to transport
Yamashita's treasure?

‐ That's right in line
with where we sighted

off of that rock down below.

‐ This is what
the LIDAR shows us.

‐ This is what the LIDAR
pointed out.

‐ We must be close.

So I think we should
just continue going that way

and get ourselves up in there.

I think we should follow
this flat area right out.

‐ We're still going...
‐ Yeah.

According to the compass,
we're still on track.

North‐northeast,
we're heading the right way.

‐ Let's go find
the end of this road.

‐ The team follows the road
that runs in line

with the compass heading

they took off
of the gunsight rock

and which may lead to a point

that will complete
the geographical triangle

Erosion over the years
loosened up the rock

and the rock tipped over.

Maybe the typhoon rains
washed it out

and it fell into the hole.

‐ The second biggest
typhoon ever recorded

is hitting us today.

Can't get any work done.

Very risky to even
get out there and walk around.

volunteers to enter first.

on this mountain,

the signs, the symbols...

‐ That is one awesome tunnel.

‐ With that air
flowing like that,

there has to be
another opening,

another exit
or entrance somewhere

on the side
of this mountain.

‐ There may be
more than one exit.

It's great that we
finally found this tunnel,

but we have to be cautious.

I wanna see how
big this tunnel is.

We have some smoke bombs,
don't we?

‐ Let's get like three
or four smoke bombs in there.

We'll drop a tarp over it.

We'll keep all
the smoke inside

and then see if smoke comes out

any other place on the mountain.
