throughout the Philippines

near the end of the war.

Yamashita's treasure
could be anything.

could hide a labyrinth

of treasure tunnels.

And now scans suggest one tunnel
may lie right beneath them.

The only question is
how to access it.

the Golden Lily symbol

showing us a back door.

point to both a front door

and a back door to the tunnel,

but they are blocked.

So to get to the tunnel,
they will dig straight down.

From my research,
General Yamashita

would've protected
this back door.

So we have to be very careful
when we take it apart.

And then they probably
have a map or schematics

on how to get in here,
which we don't have.

‐ The team already found
a World War II‐era

explosive detonator
in a nearby cave.

‐ Hold, hold, hold!

‐ To avoid triggering
these types of booby traps,

Martin believes
the Golden Lily

may have drawn up
detailed maps

to safely navigate the tunnels

and retrieve their treasure
after the war.

It is possible that it
was this type of map

that Roger Roxas used

when he found
his Golden Buddha in 1971.

But the team has
not recovered a map

that corresponds
to their mountain.

‐ All right, so with that said,

any other ideas
about what to look for?

‐ I think we're, you know,

I think we should still look
around the waterfalls

to see what was on top
of it and behind it.

It could very well be there.

I'm convinced there's
something there.

‐ Well, that'd be a good deal

because you've got so many
symbols right down here

from the Golden Lily.

You have the two face markers,

you have a box marker
down there,

and you have the bottom
of the waterfall

where you have
that turtle marker in there.

So, I think that's a good idea.

attorney Dan Cathcart who claims

that he has information
that may be useful to the team.

Weeks earlier, Peter had
a meeting with Henry Roxas

whose father, Roger,

reportedly discovered a
portion of Yamashita's treasure

only to have it confiscated
by the Filipino government.

Cathcart represented
the Roxas estate

in a landmark civil case

against former Philippine
president Ferdinand Marcos.

Dan Cathcart has been
in ill health in recent years

and requested his co‐counsel,

what became known

as the Golden Buddha
and a cache of gold bars,

Roger Roxas was reportedly
robbed of his treasure,

beaten and jailed
for several years

by members of Marcos's regime.

Nearly 22 years later, in 1993,

while President Marcos
was in exile in Hawaii,

the Roxas family won
a $22 billion judgment

against him
for false imprisonment,

torture, and theft.

Since then, the case
has been mired in appeals.

But the Hawaii
Supreme Court's decision

was a significant
public acknowledgement

of the existence
of Yamashita's treasure.

‐ Who is Bob Curtis?

‐ And these depositions here,
these are all sworn statements?

‐ Bob Curtis was
an American mining engineer

who claims he was contacted
by President Marcos

to help him launder his gold.

It was Curtis's
first‐hand accounts

of Marcos's enormous
stash of treasure

that aided Dan Cathcart
in proving his case.

‐ According to Curtis's
testimony,

Marcos told him of
the vast amount of gold

he had already recovered.

And Curtis learned
of the existence

of numerous other treasure sites
yet to be found.

‐ To further prove his case,

Cathcart followed
the trail of money

associated with
Marcos's finances

during his time as president
of the Philippines.

why they were involved?

was the U. S. government

may be involved
in treasure hunting

Now, he was a key witness

of information

on Yamashita treasure sites.

be something on there

you're gonna want to see.

our mountain is.

‐ I mean, that's definitely
right in our region.

knew about our mountain too.

to think that the CIA

were following the Roxas

He thinks they may
have wanted to profit

off of Yamashita's treasure.

to share his discovery
at the waterfall.

and come down the first
face of the rock,

and there's a ledge there
just wide enough to walk on.

It's hard to tell
in this picture,

but it is cut
back into the rock.

And all those
little holes are like

almost perfectly
drilled in there.

‐ What does it look
like to you, Martin?

‐ I've never seen
anything like this.

If I had to take a guess,
I'd say it would be a drain,

or an air vent.

‐ I've been watching
the depositions

of Bob Curtis
at the Roxas trial

and he mentions this site
called the Teresa‐2 site.

‐ They didn't dig a hole.

They dropped down
through an air shaft

to get to the treasure site.

‐ The Teresa site is
one of 175 locations

that allegedly contains
Yamashita's treasure.

Bob Curtis claims
he discovered it

with a team of Americans

working with Philippine
president Ferdinand Marcos.

According to Curtis,

the main entrance
had been blasted shut.

But his team gained access via
one of three vertical shafts.

Then recovered 23 truckloads

of gold bars
worth nearly $8 billion.

Now Peter and John
are hoping an air vent

might also be their way

in to whatever lies
behind the waterfall.

‐ So a vent.

That's a really good theory.

I like it.

You know, we've been looking

for horizontal
tunnels underground.

Every big tunnel
would have an air shaft.

If this symbol means air vent,

it's gotta be close
to where this marker is.

‐ You gotta get back up there
and check this out.

‐ Back in the United States,

after meeting attorney
Dan Cathcart,

and hearing of a possible
CIA connection

to Yamashita's treasure,

Bingo's research
has led him to JD Foringer.

‐ JD Foringer served
for over 20 years

as an officer
in the United States Navy.

He has spent almost two decades

researching possible connections
between his brother,

Yamashita's treasure,
and the CIA.

‐ A lot of cool stuff
you got here.

‐ These coin holders represent

the different ships
that I was on.

The USS "Midway,"
that was my first ship.

"Midway" was named after
the Battle of Midway,

basically
our first major battle

after the bombing
of Pearl Harbor.

And "Midway" always went
to the Philippines.

And that's how I was overseas

when my brother
was in the Philippines

and I was able to visit him.

‐ So can you tell me
about your brother?

‐ Alan was a super patriot.

He graduated from
Duke University in 1976

summa cum laude,
political science and economics.

He always worked
these sales kind of jobs

that didn't anchor him
to one location.

It had him on the road a lot.

This picture shows him
in the last year of his life.

And this is with some
of the family members

that he lived with
in the Philippines.

He was there 'til
his death in 1991.

He was my big brother
and it hit me hard.

So I started researching
at that point

his life and death.

My brother was an officer

in the company
called Nippon Star.

Nippon Star was the company

that my brother and others
were involved with

to search for treasure
in the Philippines.

‐ According to JD,
Alan Foringer was an officer

in in a corporation
called Nippon Star.

Throughout the 1980s,

Nippon Star's publicly
stated purpose

was to search for and recover
Japanese treasure

buried in the Philippines.

Among Nippon Star's members,

retired Major General
John Singlaub,

one of the founding members
of the CIA.

‐ It's not hard to make
the connection to me

that the CIA is involved
with Nippon Star.

General Singlaub, who was
a two‐star major general,

a Green Beret,

and he was one of the fathers
of the Special Forces

in that covert, clandestine
warfare that exists today.

But he was also a business
partner of my brother's.

And I actually met him
in October of 1986

when I visited my brother Alan.

He was living in the same house.

‐ Wow, that's crazy.

‐ I visited Alan three times

while he was in the Philippines.

I travelled with my brother

and I did get to see some
of those treasure hunting sites.

‐ What else did you see there?

‐ I know that they
came across booby traps.

There's markers on every site.

The Japanese left markers
so that they could figure out

how to get back to the gold.

The Japanese sealed
their treasure vaults

by filling them
with very hard concrete.

‐ This is getting really trippy.

I have a team in the Philippines
right now

and that's basically
what they encountered.

So this is all
really compelling stuff,

but do you have documents

or any other proof
of CIA involvement?

‐ Ah, come with me.
Let me show you some things.

whose brother, Alan, t,

was allegedly an officer
in a company called Nippon Star,

which was reported
to be treasure hunting

in the Philippines

and that JD believes
had CIA connections.

‐ So, I've got, you know,

quite a bit
of information here

that I've collected
through the years.

I have an Office of the
President of the Philippines

Presidential Task Force,

"Attention Mr. Alan R. Foringer,

"July 17, 1986,
Request for Permit to Search,

Excavate and Recover Japanese
Buried Treasure."

‐ So this is Nippon Star
basically asking

for a treasure‐hunting permit.
‐ Correct.

‐ I'm really trying
to understand,

where did the rumor
for Nippon Star

being a part of the CIA
come about?

‐ Through my research,

I found out about a website

that was written
by Mark O'Brian,

which was a pseudonym
for Bob Curtis.

‐ Did you say Bob Curtis?
‐ Yes, Bob Curtis.

Yeah, have you heard of him?

‐ I just had a meeting
with one of the attorneys

from the Roxas case

and he had some deposition
tapes on Bob Curtis.

What did they want
from Curtis?

‐ Bob Curtis claimed to have
the maps for 175 sites.

‐ Gotcha.

‐ These are a box of tapes
recorded by Bob Curtis.

For the meetings, the three days
of meetings that they had,

all the principals
for Nippon Star

and Bob Curtis.

‐ According to JD,
members of Nippon Star

wanted to meet
with Robert Curtis in 1987.

At Curtis's request,

the meeting was
held in Hong Kong.

‐ So how'd you get these tapes?

‐ Uh, these came
from Bob Curtis's house

and he gave them to
an investigative journalist

for the "Las Vegas Sun,"
who entrusted them to me.

Bob stated that he wanted to
tape record the conversation

for posterity,
or just for the record.

At first, he didn't want
to get involved with it all.

Because he was convinced after
hearing Singlaub's name

that it was a CIA initiative

and he didn't want to have
anything to do with that.

But my brother convinced him
to join the group.

‐ Let's give a listen.

‐ That's Bob Curtis.

That's my brother,
Alan, speaking.

‐ Okay.

‐ Man, that's pretty muffled.

So, your brother's definitely
on these tapes then.

‐ He definitely is.

he was really well connected

with everything
that was happening.

‐ Essentially, I think
Alan knew too much.

I believe he left Nippon Star

in late '89
or early 1990.

My brother was 37 years old,
in good health,

very physically fit,
worked out a lot.

He died of a heart attack out

at the Marianne's
Doctors Hospital in Manila.

‐ Do you believe there
was any foul play there?

‐ I can't say with certainty.

I have suspicions,
but I don't...

I can't prove it.

‐ Wow.

According to JD,

there's a lot
of evidence there

to support that his brother
was, in fact,

treasure hunting
in the Philippines.

I'm gonna clean up
the audio on these tapes.

Hopefully, I get
some more information

out of them.
If there is anything there,

I can't wait to tell the guys.

So, a lot of that, to me,

seems really far out there.

discovered a marker

that the team believes
could be a symbol

pointing to an air vent.

This vent marker
is right here.

To me, there
would be an air vent

or an air shaft
right below it.

So, if I dig one hole here,

I'm hoping that pops
into a tunnel.

‐ The team's theory
is that the symbol

comes from the Golden Lily,

the secret society
believed to be created

by Emperor Hirohito

and run by Imperial princes

who tasked Yamashita
with hiding the treasure

and marking the burial sites
with their coded symbols.

This symbol may indicate
a vertical air shaft

leading down
into a tunnel network

behind the waterfall.

‐ Time's a‐wastin'.

Ah, right in my way.

Oh, this damn thing
is just right

in the middle of everything.

Can't even get
your shovel in there.

Just gotta get
this rock outta here.

Otherwise, I'll
be fighting with that

for the rest of the day

I want to get the backpack drill

‐ In order to remove the boulder

a backpack drill

to bore 8‐inch deep holes
into the rock...

which they will then fill

with a non‐explosive
demolition agent.

This liquid will cure
and expand overnight,

hopefully breaking
open the boulder.

It's gonna almost look
like a slurry of water.

‐ How long's it gonna take?
‐ 18 to 24 hours.

the thing should be
cracked up in big pieces.

And we'll just take the chunks
and chuck them out of the way.

JD gave me some audio files

that he claims
are of his brother Alan,

Bob Curtis, and some other
individuals of Nippon Star

and they were discussing
Yamashita treasure sites.

The tapes themselves,
they were a bit degraded.

But I cleaned them up
as best as I could.

that on the other side

there is our tunnel.

John and Manny
are continuing their dig

at the waterfall
after removing a large rock

that was impeding
their progress.

what they believe to be
a vertical air shaft

I think a lot of this dirt

with the rainstorms

and whatever.

Now the water on that side

Our digging here has pretty
much slowed to a crawl.

If this is an air vent
and it's flooding,

we may not be able
to get in here.

I'm on the rock
about two feet down

now in the hole.

And some of the water
from the other side

is now seeping across.

It's just turning it
into chocolate milk now.

So it's hard for me to see
what's down below,

what I'm actually digging into.

And it's gonna come to a point

where I'm not sure how
much more we can dig here.

The bottom of the hole
is filling up.

If this was a vent,
this is not gonna be the way

we're gonna be able to get in.

This is trickier
than we thought.

We may have to rethink
our whole strategy.

We may not be able
to get in this way.

I think we're at the limit
of what we can do here.

while excavating the area
by the back door,

the team believes

around the void's location,
