It's one of the great mysteries

has gotta be buried
in that mountain.

infamous Japanese
general Yamashita

allegedly buried
thousands of crates

throughout the Philippines
near the end of the war.

‐ They were just taking
anything of value‐‐

gold, silver, weapons,
even military secrets.

Yamashita's treasure
could be anything.

‐ Now, with the help
of a key eyewitness...

‐ ...a team of Americans
is on the hunt

for this lost chapter
in World War II history.

what is the best way
to get inside this mountain?

that they believe could mark
a possible tunnel entrance

leading to the legendary
lost treasure of Yamashita.

interpreted the markings on
what he calls "the story rock"

as pointing to a possible tunnel
in this location.

‐ I think these two dots mean
there's treasure in this tunnel,

and it's behind the waterfall.

‐ Oh yeah, oh yeah, good signal.

Good metallic signal.

‐ ...indicating a significant
deposit of metal

18 feet behind the waterfall,

and found evidence
of a possible opening.

‐ Like there's a tunnel there.

‐ Now, after draining the pool
and finding another symbol...

‐ ...John and the team begin
to remove the rocks

they believe could be
blocking a tunnel entrance.

‐ What are you finding over
there, Jeremy, anything?

‐ Nothing much, John.

‐ You just got the big rocks
out of the way,

so are you getting
anywhere closer down

to get to the wall

and see if we can find
the top of the tunnel.

eyewitness, Grandpa,

the tunnel entrances
on the mountain

were sealed shut
with explosives.

‐ And then one day, I heard...

‐ If there is a tunnel here,

it is possible
the Japanese engineers

blasted the face
of the rock wall,

dropping rocks down into
the entrance, sealing it shut.

side of the tunnel there?

that's going underneath.

According to the story rock,

if this is
the right plunge pool,

there's a tunnel
behind this waterfall.

Until I see
something that indicates

like a tunnel going under,
I'm not seeing nothin'.

I figured it'd
be under that line.

a tunnel down there, Jeremy,

the Japanese really filled
this thing in really good.

one piece of rock.

‐ The more we dig here,

the more we're finding
solid bedrock.

We know there's a hit
18 feet behind the wall.

According to
the story rock up there,

if this is
the right plunge pool,

there should be a tunnel
behind this wall.

And the metal detector's
getting a huge hit

under that rock.

But we're not gonna
get to it through that rock.

‐ The story rock symbols

and the two possible
animal face markers

carved along the waterfalls

made John believe
that this plunge pool

contained the entrance
to one of the 175 sites

that General Yamashita
and his men had buried treasure.

But if there is a tunnel
filled with treasure crates,

the solid bedrock suggests
the entrance is not here.

‐ With their path
blocked by bedrock,

John returns to look at
what he originally thought

was a symbol for "tunnel."

‐ There's more to this marker
than meets the eye.

‐ How's that?

‐ There's not only
a dot in the center,

it's more of, like,
a half circle,

like the setting sun.

And if you look at it close,

it actually has, like,
spokes coming off of it‐‐

spokes pointing this way,

which we know there's
nothing over there,

so maybe it means
to look up on top.

Yamashita code book,

compiled from his research

into the Golden Lily symbols

supposedly used to guide
Emperor Hirohito

and the other members
of the Japanese royal family

back to the hidden
treasure sites.

what to think about it.

I really thought
we had it here.

All the signs, symbols‐‐

everything points
to this location.

We gotta find another way in.

Lots of different roads,
and lots of different paths,

and here's another path.

We've gotta figure out
what this means.

I'm confident
that there's a tunnel

and treasure buried here,

but we need to get
Martin's help.

Martin's an expert
in treasure symbols.

Maybe Martin's
seen this symbol before,

and he knows
what it means.

It's definitely perplexing.

pointing to a tunnel

being behind the waterfall.

You know,
we searched all around,

right where Greg
was getting the hit

for a big metal target
18 feet behind the wall.

We drained the plunge pool out,
we stripped all the dirt off.

It's just solid bedrock.

There's no entrance
that you can see right there.

I don't know where it is.

‐ So, there's no tunnel there.

‐ No, I'm not saying
there's no tunnel there.

I'm saying there's
no entrance to that tunnel

in this plunge pool.

‐ So, with that said, Martin,

how confident are you
that there really is a chamber

here underneath
this pool of water

coming down from the waterfall?

‐ I'm still confident.
And besides that,

he said they got a hit

18 feet back behind
the waterfall.

So it's got to be
another way in.

Did you find anything else
that could be helpful

in the plunge pool?

‐ You know, after we were
draining the plunge pool

and we got the‐‐the water
started dropping down,

we did actually find
this marker, here.

And originally, you know,
I looked at it and I thought,

you know, circle
with the dot in the middle‐‐

entrance to the tunnel.

You know, now that I look
at it a little bit more,

it's actually not just
a dot in the middle.

It looks like it's got these
spokes coming off of it‐‐

more like it's a‐‐
like a setting sun,

or I don't know,
what would you call it?

‐ I mean, right now it could
be all kinds of things.

Maybe some kind
of Japanese image?

A star in the sky,
a constellation?

‐ Martin examines
this new symbol

that John discovered
at the plunge pool.

the circle right,

so that is probably
the plunge pool.

This, I'm not real sure about.

And because of these
sticking off on it,

or the little legs,
or whatever it is,

I'm thinking that it
could be an animal marker.

‐ So, an animal in a circle,
what does that mean?

I don't know.

I mean, I had never
seen anything like this.

or try to find out
what it does mean,

that as a young boy,

he saw Yamashita's men
hide crates on the mountain,

and who has been an important
source of information.

of what's in the ground.

What is the truth?

Some of the things he says,

you have to go and check out.

So I can listen to him all day.

‐ Grandpa, we've been working
on the mountain trying to,

you know, decipher
some of the clues there,

and we wanted to talk to you

about some of the things
that we found up there.

We found this marker
below the waterfall.

‐ In the pool of the waterfall.

‐ Did you ever see it?

‐ Yep, all stone.

Grandpa's getting up
there in age,

and he's starting
to slow down.

I think we owe it to him,

for the information
that he's given us,

to solve this mystery
while he's still with us.

Peter and John
return to base camp

to discuss Grandpa's information
with Martin Flagg.

‐ So, Martin,
Grandpa took a look at this,

and he knew
right away what this was.

‐ What is it?
‐ A turtle.

‐ You're kidding.
‐ No, really.

‐ A turtle's a classic
treasure mark.

In my experience, your turtle
is one of your main symbols.

But one of its primary deals
is to mark an entranceway.

According to Grandpa,

does that mean there's
treasure under this rock?

‐ No. Grandpa said that we need
to go back to the pyramid.

He said somewhere
around the pyramid

is a large carved turtle.

He said it's a big carved
rock shaped like a turtle.

It's a marker rock.

And we need to find that,

and that'll lead us
in the right direction

towards treasure
and towards the tunnel.

But we've been around
that pyramid a lot,

and the vegetation is so dense
you can't see nothing.

So we really gotta get
in there and scour this place,

and that'll help lead us
back to the treasure

and/or the tunnel.

‐ If the pyramid is
a Golden Lily marker,

it may be pointing
in a specific direction,

possibly even to the monument

that Grandpa
told the team about.

that Grandpa told them
is supposedly in the area.

The location of the pyramid
had led the team

to finding Breach 6‐‐

a hole purportedly dug
by treasure hunters.

The team excavated Breach 6,

but were unable to discover
a path into the mountain.

They now hope that the pyramid
will reveal a new clue

to whatever
might be buried there.

‐ As I'm looking
at the pyramid,

I think we've been
treating this more

as a landmark for Breach 6.

I think there could
be something more to this

as a directional pointer.

it's pointing
or what it's looking at.

So far, I don't know

so this is probably pointing
to what we're looking for.

The other side is kind
of flattened off, you noticed,

and it's not near as long.

But this is defined
and comes down,

and could be pointing
to something through here.

It looks like it is
manmade down through there,

and it's cut for a reason.

I have an idea
this pyramid right here

could be pointing
to what we're looking for.

‐ To me, I think that
long slope is pointing us

in the direction
we should look.

This terrain is a little
difficult for Martin and me.

I think I'm gonna send

and look for Yamashita
treasure signs.

the direction they believe

the long side of the pyramid
is pointing,

looking for any signs

of the large monument
Grandpa described.

This more looks like
the tail end of the rock,

and look where Jeremy is now.

He's cleared off

it almost looks like
where the head would go.

but it feels good.

‐ On a remote mountain
in the Philippines,

the team is hunting
for a possible tunnel entrance

that could lead
to a fortune in treasure

that the Japanese army
is believed to have buried

during World War II.

Now, they have
discovered a rock

that John thinks may have been
carved to resemble a turtle.

what we're looking for.

He told us if you follow
the pyramid down,

we would find this turtle.

The tunnel entrance
could be right under here.

This is really a great sign

that we're on the right track.

‐ Rooted deep in ancient
Japanese mythology and folklore,

the turtle is a symbol
of wisdom, luck, protection,

and immortality.

Known as Kame‐Iwa,

turtle rocks can be found in
many forms across Japan,

such as the one in
historic Asuka village,

which is believed to depict
a map of the stars.

The Golden Lily,

with its roots
in Japanese royalty and history,

could have drawn
on this influence

to mark an area of interest
on the mountain.

‐ I think you're really gonna
like what you see, though.

I really can't wait
to get your opinion on it.

‐ To verify the find,

John brings in Peter and Martin.

‐ Oh.

‐ You look like
you've got something now.

‐ This is the best
thing we found so far.

‐ This is a turtle.

‐ What do turtles signify,
anyway?

‐ Well, a turtle can signify
a bunch of different things.

Now, if he's got legs
on him and they're all even,

and his tail is turned
to the left or right,

that's the way you go.

And he's a marker, too.

If his head is up
and sitting at an angle,

then out in front of him,

probably within
50 to 100 feet,

will be something
buried there.

If he has no legs,
no tail, like this,

not even the eye cut in there,

the turtle stays right here,

and what you're looking
for is right here.

‐ According to Martin,

the lack of legs on
this supposed turtle rock

is pointing them
to look directly below.

If Martin is correct,

a tunnel could be
right underneath them.

‐ This very well could be
the main entrance.

‐ Of all the things
that we've seen so far,

this really stands out.

We're on the right trail.

This is a really good marker.

‐ As the rest of the team
researches back at base camp...

John and Manny
return to the turtle rock

to scan for any
potential booby traps.

‐ I think if we concentrate

on getting all
the surface crap off first,

get the dirt exposed to get
a lot of these rocks exposed,

and then I'll metal detect it.

When searching for something
like Yamashita's treasure,

you have to be meticulous.

Even when you find a large
marker like this, it helps,

but there's still a lot
of searching to do.

of a Japanese military presence
around the turtle,

to share their discoveries.

You know, to me,
it kinda looks like

maybe it was a snare

of a booby trap.

But that's not all we found.

from a big rifle, like a‐‐

‐ This was right underneath
the turtle's head.

So what would someone
be doing there

underneath the turtle's head?

Maybe a little skirmish?

‐ Protecting that position.

Supposedly there was
no action on our mountain,

there was no fighting
on our mountain.

So somebody was doing something,
because it's a spent bullet.

It's not like it's a live round.

Imagine if this was

that the Japanese were here.

tomography, or ERT,

is a technique for determining
the structure and density

of the ground below

by firing pulses
between electrodes.

By using the ERT test,

the team may be able to find
evidence for a void space

or tunnel below,
which could indicate

that this turtle rock
was once a main entrance

into the tunnel system
leading to Yamashita's treasure.

‐ Is there something worth
looking at in this location?

So the sooner we get
out there and test it,

the sooner we'll know.

back in the US,

head researcher Bingo Minerva

travels to Texas

to meet military historian
and munitions expert

Gordon Rottman.

‐ Good to meet you, Gordon.

‐ They have arranged
to compare the shell casing

the team discovered
at the turtle rock

with the two most common rifles

used in the Philippines
during World War II

to see if they can discover
the casing's origin.

‐ This one laying here
is a US M‐1 Garand rifle.

That was the standard
shoulder rifle

used by American soldiers
and Marines in WWII.

This other one is a Japanese
Arisaka Type 99,

based off
the German Mauser action.

‐ Both the Japanese
Arisaka Type 99

and the United States
M1 Garand

were standard issue
in World War II.

The Garand had a larger
magazine capacity

and a faster rate of fire

than the Japanese Arisaka rifle,

giving considerable advantage
to the American forces.

‐ So what can you
tell me about this casing?

‐ What we wanna see is if we can
verify if it's Japanese or not.

‐ Well, it's what we call
a rimmed cartridge.

It's obviously not
the American M1 rifle.

And when I first saw it,

I thought it was
a Japanese cartridge.

Now it's about the same length

as the Japanese Arisaka Type 99,

but again,
the length of the neck,

the slope of the shoulder,

makes it a different cartridge.

‐ So definitely not shot from
any of these rifles here, then.

‐ No. What it looks like

is a Japanese navy cartridge

for a Type 92 machine gun.

‐ The Type 92 machine guns
were standard issue

in the Imperial Japanese Navy,

and were mounted
in the navy's aircraft.

They were light and small enough
to be operated handheld.

‐ And sometimes they
took craft machine guns,

modified them
so they could use them

as a ground machine gun,
out of desperation.

It would make this
a very unusual find,

but we'll verify it

when we can compare it
to other cartridges.

‐ So what can you
tell me about this casing?

‐ What it looks like
is a Japanese Navy cartridge

for a Type 92 machine gun.

‐ In Texas, head
researcher Bingo Minerva

is attempting to learn
the origin of a shell casing

the team discovered,

to see if it has any ties

to General Yamashita
and his men.

‐ We'll have to clean
it up better to tell,

but we'll verify it

when we can compare it
to other cartridges.

‐ Meanwhile,
back in the Philippines,

John shares his
initial data with Peter.

‐ I'm seeing a big void space.

‐ How big?

‐ That void space
is looking like

it's about 20 feet tall

and about 15 feet wide.

‐ You could fit
a truck inside that.

‐ The problem is is that
as I go towards the turtle

where we think
the opening would be,

instead of getting a void,
I got nothing.

Where the hell
did my tunnel go?

So the tunnel's
either blown closed

or it collapsed on itself,

or they just closed it all
the way out to the turtle.

‐ According to legend,
after the treasure

was loaded into the tunnels,

General Yamashita blasted
the entrances shut...

sealing the POWs
and Philippine workers inside.

If there was a tunnel heading
off from the turtle rock,

it is possible that
it could have collapsed

when the entrance was detonated.

‐ Maybe the turtle itself
is not the way to get in.

Maybe that's not the entrance.

Maybe we're going about
it in the wrong way,

maybe we're in the wrong spot.

Maybe we're looking
for the wrong clues.

The fact that the head
is lifted like this

and it's pointing
in a certain direction‐‐

maybe it's a directional marker.
‐ That's possible.

‐ Now we have to figure out
where that's leading us to.

‐ Maybe looking where
the head is looking

is the way you're
supposed to go.

‐ And that's what we should do.

Depending on the type
of ammunition, the head stamp

may indicate its origin
or even production date.

If Gordon is able
to find this information,

it could tie the shell casing
to one of Yamashita's men.

It's roughly 58mm.

‐ The best thing to do
is clean off this head stamp,

and see what
we can make out of it.

The Japanese army didn't
put head stamp markings

on their cartridges.

‐ But the Japanese navy did,

and this has got head stamp
markings on it.

Okay, this is unusual.

It's not shot
from the Type 92 machine gun.

Okay, there's a six‐‐

that means it was
manufactured in June.

And this year marking is 08.

This cartridge was made in 1908.

It's got "FA"‐‐
that's Frankfurt Arsenal‐‐

and it's a .30‐40
Krag cartridge.

That's American.

I got an ID off
that casing you sent me.

It's an American cartridge,
it's not Japanese.

‐ Hmm, that's not the best news.

‐ It gets worse.

It's a cartridge from 1908.

It comes out
of a .30‐40 Krag rifle,

which was a pre‐World War II
issue American rifle.

‐ Oh, that's way
before World War II.

get on our mountain
next to our turtle?

‐ In 1898, tensions
between the United States

and Spanish forces in Cuba

sparked into the 10‐week
Spanish‐American war,

fought around the last
remaining Spanish colonies

in the Caribbean
and the Pacific.

As part of Spain's surrender,

they ceded control of
the Philippines to US forces,

who would remain
in control there

until the Japanese invasion
in 1941.

Now, the team must determine
why a US shell casing

was found next to what could be
a Golden Lily treasure marker.

the Japanese resources

Well, they've been plundering
and taking anything they got,

they've been bringing
stuff over the whole time

to hide in the mountains,
so whatever they picked up,

they would've brought
those along with it.

‐ As the American
blockade in the Pacific

cut off Japanese supply lines,

Yamashita's men
may have been forced

to replenish
their depleted resources

with plundered weapons,

including possibly
US Krag rifles

left over from
the Spanish‐American War.

This could be the source
of the casing at turtle rock,

which is the latest mystery
the team must decode.

‐ Something important
is happening around that turtle.

Come hell or high water,
we're gonna figure it out.

‐ Absolutely.

‐ On the mountain,

continue searching along
the line of sight

of the turtle rock's head,

looking for any signs

that may lead to a possible
tunnel entrance.

is actually pointing
to a treasure.

a Golden Lily symbol

showing us a back door.

‐ Based on Martin's research,

it is believed that Yamashita
strategically constructed

his tunnel systems with
a main front door entrance

where the treasure
was loaded,

and a smaller,
more concealed back door,

where the Golden Lily
could access the tunnels.

‐ So you're saying
that this symbol is

telling us about a back door?

‐ Exactly.

When the Japanese and
the Golden Lily would come back,

they wouldn't want
to use the front door,

because they'd have
blasted it shut

and loaded up with
all kinds of tripwires,

all this kind of stuff,

because so many people saw.

‐ Too many trucks
coming in and out,

too many people
seeing what was going on.

‐ So the Imperial
family would've needed

a different way to get
into the treasure tunnel.

‐ Exactly.

They needed a back door
to get in

where not a lot of people
could see them.

‐ I don't think it's gonna
be that easy to find.

The Japanese were smart.
‐ Exactly.

So they probably would've put,

like, cover stones in it,

or put rocks together
to close that up

so they could get in
and out easy,

and seal it back
all at one time.

‐ This could very easily
tell us where the back door is.
