allegedly buried
thousands of crates

throughout the Philippines
near the end of the war.

even military secrets.

Yamashita's treasure
could be anything.

of a key eyewitness...

‐ A team of Americans

is on the hunt
for this lost chapter

in World War II history.

inside this mountain?

they believe was used by
General Yamashita and his men

during World War II.

Recently,
they unearthed two coins

and a grenade detonator here.

Now they are wondering
if there could be more.

Maybe when someone was
pulling out a treasure and...

a few dropped out
of the box.

Two down.

And where there's two,
there's probably three.

It's now our second coin,

and we found it underneath
the treasure rock.

So we're thinking, yeah,
we gotta keep digging.

‐ It's believed Yamashita's
treasure extends

beyond just coins
and gold bars.

Throughout Asia

in the years before
and during World War II,

the conquering
Japanese army looted art,

historical relics
and religious artifacts.

John and his team
hope some of it

might be buried
beneath their feet.

‐ We're on the treasure.

Oh, what the hell?

‐ Holy smokes!
‐ That's a crab!

‐ Crabs kinda like
to hang out in void spaces,

so we must be getting close
to possibly a void down there.

Keep digging.

Gotta figure out where
these crabs are coming from.

‐ The crabs may be hiding
in an underground opening,

something John hopes points
to a possible treasure site

or a tunnel going
into the mountain.

‐ Maybe it's just
some groundwater.

Where's this water
coming from?

‐ It's not uncommon to hit
water while you're digging.

But to hit so much water
only a few feet down,

at this high elevation,
I'm starting to think

there's something else
going on here.

We might've just
sprung a water trap.

‐ Is it safe here?

‐ I don't think it was
a trap that would kill us.

I think it was meant to keep
protecting the treasure.

‐ According to legend,

Yamashita and his men
created water traps

all over the mountain

to prevent looters
from stealing treasure‐‐

some allegedly kill.

But John believes
he may have triggered

a different kind of water trap,

one that conceals treasure
by flooding the soft soil

once the cap is broken,

causing it to sink
further into the ground.

‐ Son of a bitch.

We might have to halt
what we're doing.

Until we can figure
out how to stop the water

from coming into the hole
and cut it off,

we can't dig any further.

We're only gonna be shooting
ourselves in the foot.

So, right now,
this hole is gonna have to stay

on hold until we figure out
how to get rid of this water.

‐ John heads back to base camp
to share his discoveries.

‐ Oh, look at this!

Wow, this is our second coin.

‐ Where'd you find it?

‐ In the cave, under the rock
with the X on it.

It was only like a foot
and a half down underneath it.

‐ It's got‐‐it's got
a lot of debris on it.

Hard to tell where it's from.

We gotta send
this off to Bingo,

find out when it was made,
where it's from.

‐ Did you find anything else?

‐ Yeah, tons of water.

As soon as Jeremy
pulled it out of the way,

water started filling
up our hole, a lot of water.

‐ You think you hit
groundwater?

‐ I wouldn't think
it would be groundwater

so high up in that elevation.

I don't know.

Maybe we triggered something.

‐ Like a water trap.
‐ Right.

‐ It's very likely when
he was shoving down in there

and it liquefied enough

that a piece would've
just slid right off like,

and then down
it would have went.

And once they got
the gold and stuff sinking,

it would sink until
it hit something solid.

‐ So, how do you retrieve a
treasure from a trap like that?

‐ It's hard to do.

Most likely, you're
not gonna get it back.

‐ Right now, that's not gonna
help us get into the mountain.

I'm gonna put that on hold.

It's more important to me
to get into the mountain

than to look for a treasure

that could or possibly
be there or not be there.

Could've kicked it in already.

‐ Gotta get into the mountain.

I think the story rock
has a map on it.

‐ At the entrance
of the cave

where the team
found the two coins,

John also discovered
a giant rock

covered with markings
Martin believes tell a story

about how to find
possible treasure.

There's markers on these rocks.

‐ We're looking for a way
into the mountain.

I'm thinking this story rock
could be the key

to get into the mountain.

But they're not clear enough
that you can tell what's what.

We're not real sure.

and start chalking in.

And as I chalk
in each section,

I can take pictures
and send it, you know,

right off the phone,
right down to you guys.

to the cave to see

if there is more to learn
from the symbols

carved into what Martin
calls the story rock.

‐ With the potential water trap
stopping us at the cave,

we still have
the story rock there.

And the story rock
is just that‐‐

a story of what happened
or what took place

in this location,

possibly directions
to the treasure itself.

‐ By outlining
the chisel marks on the rock,

John hopes to gather
more information.

He snaps photos of the symbols

and sends them back to Peter
and Martin for analysis.

‐ Yeah, John, go ahead.

‐ There's some incredible
stuff on this story rock.

‐ I'm looking at the first

or something they dug,

and with a dot in it,

it means there's
a treasure in it.

up the mountain.

what the hell that means.

could mean a shaft going down.

The curve here looks like
it's a directional symbol

for looking for a‐‐
a water impact,

or where there'd be a pool.

‐ The way it's drawn out,
I wonder if that's

an actual landmark,
like a waterfall.

‐ Martin believes the story rock
is depicting a waterfall

flowing into
a lower plunge pool.

This is the second time
the team's heard

a waterfall suggested
as a possible treasure site.

that kinda came this way...

to a waterfall.

recently visited
a treasure hunter

who drew a map
of the mountain

showing a waterfall
marked by a gorilla face.

Now, Martin believes he sees
another waterfall clue.

probably be the pool,

and then this back in here,

could be a tunnel
behind the waterfall.

there are treasure

in this tunnel

leading to a waterfall.

diving experience,

I've spent most
of my adult life in Asia.

This area
offers me no surprises.

‐ Our Navy specialist,
Greg Ford,

who is a diver,

he's here to help us explore
these plunge pools

to see if there's a tunnel
behind the waterfall

that leads inside
this mountain.

‐ John, Manny,
and Navy diver Greg

begin their search halfway
down the face of the waterfall

just below
the gorilla face marker.

‐ The Japanese army
engineers were here?

‐ That's what they say.

All these pools
and all these waterfalls

are significant to where
they put Yamashita's treasure.

‐ Based on his research,
John believes waterfalls

were used to hide treasure
by the Japanese army.

South of Osaka, Japan
at Nachi Falls,

an archaeological dig site

at the base of the waterfall
revealed

that for nearly 1,000 years,
priests from a nearby temple

buried religious artifacts
and precious relics

below the waterfall

to keep them safe
during times of war.

a poke around

to see if we can see anything
that looks unnatural

or looks like the Japanese
had been here before us.

metals that could indicate

in the mountain.

coming from that machine?

‐ You'll hear
a rise and a lower.

What that is, that's
the electronics responding

to the metal.

It's pretty quiet right there.

So we're gonna go down
the creek a little further

and explore
the next plunge pool.

has located an expert
in Asian coins.

After briefing him,

Bingo's now heading
to Whittier, California

hoping to identify
the two coins.

‐ I found us a guy
who is an expert in coins.

His name's Brad Mosely,
and hopefully,

he can verify
its age and origin for us.

‐ I am.

‐ Bingo, nice to see you.

‐ So, what do you know
about Japanese coins

or Japanese treasure
in general?

‐ Here is a coin

that possibly could be a part

of Yamashita's gold.

In 1942, because
the Philippine government

thought the Japanese military

was gonna
overtake the treasury,

they dumped
$17 million worth of...

‐ Of these coins. Wow.
‐ ...these types of coins

into Caballo Bay.

‐ After Japan
invaded the islands,

the Philippine government

threw its treasury
into the Caballo Bay

hoping to keep it
out of Japanese hands.

After defeating the U. S.

at the Battle of Bataan,

the Imperial Army forced
captured American divers

to salvage the coins.

While the POWs were able to slow
the recovery of the treasure

to a crawl,
what they did retrieve

could have ended up
with Yamashita.

‐ So, we found these coins.

I mean, just based
on initial inspection,

I mean, they look fairly old.

‐ I would say
that that's a given,

considering the abrasion.

It'll be interesting to see what
they might actually represent.

‐ Brad examines the first coin

the team found
just a few days ago

in a cave under a rock
marked with an X.

‐ In this book
of world coins...

Okay...

There's a face on there

and we notice
that there is the...

Asian writing on the coin.

Those are the only two actual
things that we can equate.

‐ So is the coin Japanese?

‐ Actually, it
potentially could be

a coin that was
produced in Korea.

‐ Well, Korea was one
of the countries that Japan

did conquer
before World War II.

Potentially,
it's something from the war.

‐ Unfortunately, this coin
was actually produced

between 1971 and 1982.

‐ Yeah, this is leaving me
with a lot more questions

than answers right now.

I mean, what the hell were
Koreans doing on our mountain?

‐ It's possible if we were
gonna speculate here,

that there was a treasure
hunter from Korea,

or an individual

that had spent some time
in Korea in the '70s.

‐ We don't know.
‐ Another mystery.

‐ Another mystery.

‐ The second coin was
buried directly beneath

the rock with an X,

but is too corroded
to identify markings.

So Brad uses a special
solution to remove the debris.

‐ Is this gonna
dissolve the coin,

or just the stuff on it?

‐ Just the stuff
on the surfaces. Go ahead.

‐ While Brad and Bingo wait

for the dirt on the coin
to dissolve,

John and the team
continue checking the path

of the waterfalls
underneath the gorilla face.

They're looking for signs
that could indicate a tunnel

behind a waterfall.

So we see in the valley

that if the Japanese
were up here, you could‐‐

no one could see you
working up here.

‐ I don't think there
would've been anybody

to even see them
to begin with.

flats and the river.

That's a natural mark.

Those are Japanese box markers.
‐ Yep.

‐ John knows a box marker

is a common Golden Lily
symbol for treasure.

If genuine, he hopes
it will take the team

a step closer to finding
a way into the mountain

and to treasure
possibly buried there.

‐ I am seeing
some Japanese writing.

‐ How the hell did this coin

Those are Japanese box markers.

‐ While exploring the waterfalls
beneath the carved gorilla face,

John and his team
discover a set of markers.

‐ Those are box markers,
meaning that there's five boxes,

it looks like,
of possible treasure,

five boxes of gold.
‐ Right here.

‐ Somewhere around here.

Sit right here.

Look at that.

These are some of the most
compelling treasure markers

I've ever seen.

And you can only see it
from standing there

looking down at it.

There's no other
way to see this.

Maybe normally, these
would be hidden underwater

and you'd have to wait for
the rainy season to be over

and the water level
to be this low

to actually see these markers.

It's pretty incredible.

He's probably saying, look down
further where this might be.

So somewhere down there is where
these targets would be.

‐ Looks like a face.

‐ Well.

It almost looks like two sets
of eyeballs and its mouth.

‐ With a nose
coming out, yeah.

‐ Weeks ago, John and Manny
found what they believe

to be the face of a gorilla

carved in the uppermost
waterfall on the mountain.

‐ Look at that.

‐ In the treasure hunting world,

it is believed
animal face symbols

point to treasure based on
where their eyes are looking.

But John and Manny
weren't certain

where the gorilla
marker pointed.

‐ Finding that gorilla
face was awesome,

but I couldn't see
where the eye was looking.

But now, the story rock is
saying it's in the waterfall

and at the waterfall,
I find these box markers.

Now I'm thinking the gorilla
face is looking

right at these box markers.

I'm starting
to put it all together.

It seems like the gorilla face
is pointing to the box markers,

which is pointing
to this lower plunge pool

below the box markers.

And I think if we go down there,

we're gonna find a tunnel

and it's gonna
be filled with treasure.

I'll tell you what, though.

We're not going that way,

cause I'm looking
over the edge

and there is no set of stairs.
‐ Nope.

‐ There's gotta be a way that we
can get down, so let's find it.

‐ We're getting there.

‐ We're getting
a little closer, for sure.

‐ As John and the team
make their way down

to the lower plunge pool,

back in the United States...

‐ Already you're seeing some
of the stuff come off of it.

‐ Oh, yeah, look at that.

It's already working.

the second coin

the team found in the cave.

‐ This coin, Bingo, is Japanese.

‐ I am seeing

‐ Definitely a Japanese coin.

‐ That we can confirm.

‐ The coin is horribly degraded.

‐ Okay. I see the Japanese
characters on the side, yeah.

‐ This is my best guess.

It's a 50 Sen piece

that was struck
between 1928 and 1938.

The Japanese writing on the coin
signifies that it is from Japan,

an actual
pre‐World War II coin.

‐ Well, hey, well,
that's great news.

‐ That's‐‐that's about
all I can confirm.

‐ It does say we are
on the right track.

Japanese were on our mountain.
‐ Yes.

‐ I think the bigger question
there is,

how the hell did this coin
end up under a rock

on a mountain
in the middle of the Philippines

just in a remote jungle?

‐ Later that day,

the team gets an update
from Bingo.

‐ Well, I got those coins
that you sent me

and I had 'em looked
at by an expert.

‐ Well, what'd you find?

‐ One of them is Korean.

It was minted sometime
between '71 and '82,

and that really
doesn't help us.

It's just a regular
hundred Wan coin.

But the other coin,
in fact, is Japanese,

and this one was minted
pre‐World War II.

‐ So that coin could've
been lost on the mountain,

1930, 1940.

But it could also have been lost
in the '70s, '80s or '90s.

‐ You know, I thought
about that as well.

So I did a little
bit more digging.

I found out that Japan reissued
all of their currency

immediately following the war.

So this coin essentially
has zero value.

I‐‐I can't see any reason for
anyone to be carrying around

something like this,
especially after the war.

‐ So you're saying it
was there before the war,

or during the war.
‐ It had to have been.

‐ That's great news, Bingo.

‐ All right, so we have a Korean
coin that means nothing.

‐ Doesn't mean anything.
‐ Nope.

But the‐‐the Japanese coin
that was minted

before the end of WWII,

it just helps to prove
that the Japanese were here

burying treasure.

Somehow or another, that cave

is connected to this treasure.

Let's hope that waterfall
is our way into the mountain.

‐ I sure hope so.

‐ Back at the waterfall,

the team arrives
at the lower plunge pool.

‐ I don't see any major markers
on the wall here.

As you look down
at this pool here,

it kinda just
sinks off in there.

check inside the pool.

We could actually wand
right through here, too,

to see if there's any hits.

The Japanese love to build
tunnels behind falls.

‐ John thinks it's possible

Yamashita's engineers
diverted the water here

allowing them to tunnel
behind the falls,

hiding treasure inside.

‐ It would be very
easy to hide gold

or to hide anything down here.

‐ Based on the markers
that we saw up top,

you know, I think
this plunge pool,

we need to explore some more.

Very carefully over there.

‐ Oh, yeah, no problem.

‐ Nothing.

If there's any metal
within 18 feet

of this magnetometer,
it will find it.

‐ Nothing back here,
no metal,

only like light metal here.

But as I bring it back
into the rock face there...

...really screaming down here.

‐ Oh, yeah, oh, yeah,
good signal!

Good metallic signal.

I think there's
one large accumulation

of metal right there.

‐ Yep.

Wow! That's pretty incredible.

Within 18 feet right there.
‐ Yep.

‐ Using a magnetometer,

the team believes they
have discovered a large hit

to the right of the waterfall,

which could indicate
a significant concentration

of metal within 18 feet
of the falls.

‐ If the Japanese were gonna
hide treasure here,

it would be a good place
to do it.

You know,
this is a great spot.

It's totally hidden
away from everything.

I think we should get our gear
and get in the water.

‐ If the team's theory
is correct,

there could be
an underwater tunnel system

leading inside the mountain

and to a possible
Yamashita treasure site.

‐ I don't know what
we're gonna find in here.

So, what I'm gonna
do is tie a rope

around my waist

and I want you guys
to tend that rope.

If there's a tunnel there,
we'll find it.

I can guarantee that.

Diving in something like this

that we've never been in before,

we don't know
what we don't know.

Who knows what
we're gonna have, okay?

But the strength of the signal
and the quality of the signal

tells me we have something
quality down there.

‐ The team secures
Greg's tether rope

so he doesn't get disoriented
in the murky water.

‐ I really hope Greg
will see an opening

that goes into the hillside
under there.

That would be my best hope.

‐ The rock...

goes down straight
and then it goes curved.

It starts to curve in.

‐ Greg, you're actually
feeling that the rock face

actually is starting
to go behind the waterfall

underneath the waterfall.
‐ Yeah.

‐ Like there's a tunnel there.
‐ Yeah, definitely.

It looks like it can
continue on further,

but it's completely
filled with rocks

and‐‐and sand and silt.

There's two big ones
sitting right there.

They're visible.

If we can move
these boulders here,

we'll have a better chance
of getting further in.

‐ How big are the rocks
that you're seeing down there?

‐ About this big.

‐ Okay, I mean,
they're not super small,

but they're big enough
that we can get some‐‐

some rope around them
and pull them out of the way.

‐ I think it'll work.
Yeah, let's do it.

‐ If Yamashita's men
did place treasure

in a tunnel
behind the waterfall,

it is possible
that his engineers used

explosives to blast
off the face of the wall,

dropping large rocks into
the corner of the plunge pool,

sealing the tunnel entrance.

‐ With his magnetometer,
we got hits off to one corner.

And the pile of rocks
that Greg is seeing down there

makes me believe that there
still is a tunnel under there.

‐ While the team prepares
to clear one of the large

underwater rocks blocking
the possible tunnel entrance,

Peter arrives to check
on progress.

‐ What are yous up to?

‐ I think we found
a tunnel under there.

‐ It slopes down
and it's covered,

but there's a definite
slope down into the rock.

‐ It starts to go underneath
like it was a tunnel,

and they blocked it
with a bunch of rocks.

‐ So what's
our overall plan here?

‐ We're gonna move these rocks

with a rope system
and a come‐along.

We're gonna hook onto
this large boulder here

and use this as our base.

And then we're gonna
pull these rocks

slowly out of their place.

Once we get them out,

then we have a better
chance of seeing

what we got down there.

And then we can dive down
or we can dig down.

‐ Using simple engineering
like pulley systems

was a hallmark
of the Japanese army.

Before the Battle of Tarawa,

soldiers used natural materials
like palm trees and rope

to hoist massive
eight‐inch cannons

into defensive positions.

The island was so well‐fortified

that the resulting battle was
one of the war's deadliest,

called by some experts

"the toughest in U. S.
Marine Corps history."

‐ How big is that rock, Greg?

‐ I'd say 500 pounds.

‐ All right.

‐ It's not gonna move itself.
