I expected people to accept me and
respect me, gay or straight.

This guy, he was like a serpent.

It's not coke. It's not heroin.

It's just conjure.

I'm going to take my girl and we're

It started to feel pretty dangerous.

In a way, it's like you're kidnapped.

It just went bang, bang, bang.

Right into hell.

I grew up in the South Bronx.

The cops wouldn't get out of their car.
That's the best way to put it.

You had to be able to walk the walk and
talk the talk.

That was the Bronx.

I was 20, but I was still like a big
kid.

I really was.

I was a woman that was full of salt and
vinegar and stupidity.

All heart and small brain.

Both my parents worked.

And I have my mother telling me, TK, you
know you really could do better than

being a security guard.

Go back to school. Go do this. Go do
that.

TK. And she wanted me to become a
lawyer.

TK. These were all long -term things.

Yeah, yeah, I gotta go.

And I had a very short -term mind.

I was working as a security guard.

I was glad to be working, but...

$8 an hour even then wasn't saying much.

I was in a relationship with a very
beautiful girl named Scarlett.

She was happy -go -lucky, always
smiling, the total opposite of me.

I don't think it would matter gay or
straight. I expected people to just

But there were some people, they wanted
to make it hard for you. They wanted to

see if they could twist it a little bit.

There were moments it was hard, it was

Eventually, I was like... So how much
ganja do you think?

He's like, uh... Not much. About 20
pounds.

You know, making it sound really light.

So I'm like... 20 pounds?

Mm -hmm. I guess that's not that much.

And he's telling me the most I was going
to have to do was be a tourist for a

few days. Hang out, have fun.

And then when it's ready, it'll be in
your bag.

You get back, you get five.

That's it.

And I'm like, five?

Five thousand?

For a couple of day trip?

On a tropical island?

Drinking pina coladas?

Really?

You gotta be kidding me, right?

I'm like, yo, you know I got my girl.

I had a lot of dilemmas in my head.

You're downplaying every part of it.
You're like, it's not coke. It's not

heroin. It's just ganja.

And I'm going to the place where they

I mean, they make songs about it there.

I had no clue marijuana was illegal in
Jamaica.

Seriously. I thought it was like trees
of ganja just swaying in the wind like

palm trees.

The big question in my mind was whether
or not Scarlett would come with me.

I had already made up my mind I wasn't
going to go without her.

It's like, hey, uh... Ready to go
somewhere warm, lay on the beach, smoke

ganja.

Huh? What do you think?

Think that would be nice?

Yeah. And she's like... I think that
would be really nice.

So I just asked her, hey... You know
Joe?

Well, they're looking for some people to
take a trip to Jamaica and bring back

some ganja.

She just looked at me like... Are you
serious?

And I told her about the money. And we
both get like five grand cash.

The money was like, wow, yeah?

Really?

And I guess at that moment, she had more
power than she probably even knew.

Because if she had have said hell no, it
would have never happened.

I'm going to take my girl and we're
going to Jamaica.

I had it all planned out.

Down to the last 25 cents.

The money is going to go to the
apartment.

I'm out of this hell hole.

We went back to Joe's house to figure
out how this deal was going to work.

He was like, hey, the guy is coming.

And I was like, oh, yeah?

Yeah. You want to meet the guy that's
sending you, right?

And up until that point, I really
thought it was Joe.

Doorbell rang.

Joe's wife goes, lets him in.

And he parts those beads.

This guy, but he was like a serpent.

He was cold as ice.

And then he saw my Puerto Rican
girlfriend sitting next to me.

And he's like, what the hell is going on
here? It was all on his face.

He said a few little murmurings, you
know, to Joe. And it was his way of

Anybody want anything to eat?

Everybody's doing a whole bunch of
family things in the middle of this

serious thing going on.

Have you seen my lion?

Well, they don't worry enough, though.

We're going to get you suitcases. We're
going to get you tickets.

We're going to get you hotel rooms.

His only question was... If somebody
tried to rob me, you know... Rob you?

Yeah, I might have looked unsavory,

He was so safe with me.

And he's like, I want to get you guys
blessed.

Yeah, okay. What do you mean by blessed?

Okay.

This is a twist.

So we went all the way to Brooklyn.

From Nebraska.

He took us to this lady's apartment.

She was very serious.

We looked at each other, and I gave her
that look, and she gave me a look like,

don't say anything, don't say anything.

She read from the Bible, marked us with
some oil, like a little cross symbol.

I'm a young kid, but I'm thinking, this
ain't the French connection, you know?

I'm not dealing with, you know,
masterminds here.

The next thing that happened was
shopping for bags.

Myself and the financer of the trip.

And we picked up some Samsonite.

Big bags, like you could do a mob body
chop up and put them in the bag. That

kind of bag.

Did I start thinking, gee, we're going
to be bringing back a lot of stuff?

No. If I'd have thought on it, I really
couldn't have done it.

Hey, babe.

Scarlett. She was revved up. She was
ready. She had her optimism on high.

I'm ready.

Here's the bag. Start packing.

We're leaving.

I'm going to miss y 'all, man.

I can go to Jamaica with y 'all, man.

Why not?

It was the last night before we left,
and it was the farewell party.

Can I come? We don't want you to go. You
don't belong there. We drank our last

New York beers.

And we smoked our last New York blunt.

I guess it was not really something you
would do before a normal vacation.

You're not scared, are you?

You're scared.

You're scared to walk out the front
door. Maybe in the back of our mind,

still was that sense of we're taking a
risk here.

It was too much like saying goodbye to
something.

It was the day we were due to leave.

I told my mom I was going to stay with
some friends for a few days.

God forbid she would have seen me with
this big bag in November.

Thanksgiving coming up in a couple of
weeks.

You think of two young people like you
just won a trip to some place.

It was that kind of frame of mind.

Looking back, I'm like, wow.

You idiot.

The one person you're trying to protect
and you really put them out on the

firing line.

We cut down and this was like a little
countryside airport.

We're dressed like New York City's
finest.

The humidity and the sun was just
baking.

So it was immediate sweat.

And we were like wide -eyed looking
around because we didn't even know who

hell we were looking for.

They saw us, and next thing I know they
were just there,

right in front of our face, and it was
like...

How do you forget a name like that?

I was like, how did you know it was us?
And they're like, please, stand up.

You guys stood out. We knew you were
from New York.

Where are you taking us, man?

Someplace great, man. They were all
smiles.

Ready to take our bags.

It was like two bodyguards.

Hey, we're rock stars, and that's our
protection.

We gave each other the look like, hey.

We're in Jamaica.

Started driving to the hotel and just,
oh, man, looking at all that scenery in

Jamaica, at all the palm trees,
Scaramouche talking all the way, telling

about the clubs and different places we
could go eat.

Oh, you guys are going to have so much
fun, you know, whatever you guys want to

do. That's what he kept saying, whatever
you guys want to do.

Pulled up to the hotel and everything
looked beautiful.

Nice big bed, air conditioner,
television,

see some little view.

It's very nice.

Plan was to stay for a week.

And they sent us a water spending money
to enjoy ourselves with while we were

there.

For every one American dollar, they
would give you 32 Jamaican dollars.

So in the beginning, it seemed like we
were millionaires.

We definitely played the tour.

I want to go where Bob Marley went.

Laying on the beach, eating grilled
snapper that they cooked right there on

beach.

Swimming, getting in water that, you
know, I could see my toes.

I was living in the now.

No thought more than what was going on
right that minute.

They all smiled.

Hey, pretty girl, you want to go out,
you know, later on, me and you and this

and that.

And she just started giggling like,
you're kidding, stop, stop.

And after a few times, I guess, of
laughing them off, I actually told them,

hey, man, that's my girl.

And me, where's the ganja?

Come on, man, I'm in Jamaica, man.

Light me up, man.

They showed me one of the places that
they got it from, and I was like, that's

newspaper stand.

So it really stuck in my mind that this
is nothing here, right?

But it was.

It was, as I found out.

He hands me the bag of weed, and then I
rip open the little plastic bag.

The guys just start, like, bugging out.

I'm like, what is it? What are you
talking about, man? You just brought it

there. But I could tell from the look on
their faces, it was serious.

And then it started to seep in.

You mean this is a big thing here?

You mean, like, weed is not just cool?

And it's starting to hit me now.

Hey. This is serious on this side of
town, not just where you came from.

Day five, almost that first week coming
to an end, things were starting to

change. Whenever we went out, we always
had somebody.

And it made me start to think, why do
they get so concerned whenever I walk

on my own?

I mean, in a way, it's like you're
kidnapped.

You're in a foreign place. You don't
have your own money.

So it's not like you can just pick up
and leave.

You don't even know what street you're
on.

All we had for a lifeline was these
strangers.

We were supposed to be there for another
few days.

We got a lot of cash.

And we spent all our spending money. We
spent it all.

Went to Scaramouche.

We need some more money.

Hey, man.

Money's running low.

We need to call back to the States.

He was calling the guy that was working
with Joe.

You know, because he was the one that
was financing everything.

He came back, and he was like, you know,
he wants to know why we're spending so

much money, and I think we got to move
to another hotel.

Move? Why?

That's when the guy I moved started
getting annoyed.

They were like, yo, we don't have enough
money.

I'm like... We'd be well taken care of.
Now all of a sudden, it's a different

story.

It was like all of a sudden, no, no, no,
no.

Well, you know, what's your problem?

Haven't you partied enough?

But where are you taking us?

And it's like, it's time for business
now.

Just come on. Something's wrong.

I'm not sure what it is.

But the bells start going off.

It was like you drive from an okay part
of town into the worst part of town

you've ever seen.

It just went bang, bang, bang, right
into hell.

It was the worst hotel I've ever seen in
my life.

It was a motel.

It was like some place you would, you
know, bring a hooker or something, I

guess.

Shoulders to a room, open the door, and
it was like, whoa.

You know, just wow.

They were like, hey.

This is all we have money for right now.

Plus, I need to be keeping out of sight
anyway.

Y 'all need to be out of sight right now
anyway. That's the way they tried to

make it sound.

We didn't really have a choice but to
buy it.

Because believe me, at that point,
neither one of us was happy.

All right.

What?

They wanted all our identification.

It raised another red flag with me
because I'm like, why?

We're supposed to be leaving soon.

I was saying no.

No way.

We'll keep them.

I didn't want to give anybody anything.

They made it sound, you don't want to
get robbed of this.

We were torn because it was like, should
we hide it or should we give it to

them?

It was one of those very uncomfortable
moments where I felt reality set in.

I didn't know what else to do.

Eventually, I gave it to him.

And I recognized I wasn't in control of
the situation at all.

Okay. Get used to all the other cases.

So we're going to take your suitcases
and get everything fitted.

You know, Scarlett was pretty much like
her nerves were starting to get

to her.

I guess the reality of what we were
really there to do was starting to hit

But we were trying to be comforting to
each other.

Trying not to think about what was
looming like a

guillotine in front of us.

Scarlet would say something, you know,
how much you think they're bringing

I'd be like, yeah, you know, a couple of
pounds.

I always tried to downplay everything.

I mean, this was big luggage. I mean,
you know, I was expecting some James

type thing.

I thought they were.

Going to put in their little secret
compartments or whatever the hell they

and that would be it.

That's not the way it came back.

It was amazing.

They left with expensive Samsonite huge
bags and they came back

with small nylon suitcases.

We looked at the bag and it was like, no
way.

You kidding me, right?

Because I can see from here, it's
something in that bag. You could see

this big block that looked like a giant
encyclopedia.

It was a joke.

I said, what happened to the bags? These
aren't the bags we had.

And he was like, oh, your bag.

While fitting the stuff in your bag, the
guys ripped off.

And I'm like, what do you mean?

They all busted and bust up.

There's nothing we can do about that.
Just one of them T .K. T .K.

Scarlett was looking to me, though.

Hey, man, do you have a clue?

Do you know what's going on?

Now it was like the blinders are off.

The dope haze is gone.

I'm totally sober.

What the is going on here? You guys
playing with me now, right?

Because this is my life, yo. Hey, T .K.,
calm down.

He was like, hey. The airport's been
paid off, man. And I'm thinking to him,

okay, so you got this little airport
over here paid off.

But we talking about JFK, man. We
talking about New York City.

I had everything cool and run, trust me.

It wasn't cool.

I knew it wasn't cool.

I wanted to call Joe or the guy in
Brooklyn and ask them what the hell was

on.

But it was like, no, you don't talk to
nobody.

What you going to do about it? Your
other bags are gone. We're not bringing

back. They ripped up.

Deal with it.

And right then and there, I knew.

We were screwed.

We're left with the bags.

Scarlett looked at me.

She was like, what the hell are we going
to do?

And I'm like, let's put the shoes and
the hard stuff on the bottom. And put

the pants and shorts and shirts and
socks and throw it on the top.

That's not looking so good.

Okay, let's put all the soft stuff on
the bottom. We'll put the hard stuff on

the top.

No, this doesn't look good either.

No matter how we packed it, it still
looked like it was something to that

freaking Betty.

Scarlett was just looking scared and
sad, like... This isn't going like you

it would, you know, babe?

And I'm like, yeah, it's not.

Options were small. She was like, Maybe
we should just leave the bags and get

out of here.

Leave the hotel?

Walk through the ghetto until you hit
the first cop and then say what? What

about the embassy?

What are they going to do for us?

What is the story we're going to tell?

Look, let's just take a ride with them
in the morning.

Dump the bags, get on the plane.

That's it.

The rooster's crowing.

The heat rising, the sun shining through
those cheek blinds, and me up all night

anyway.

This was it.

We get in the car.

We start the longest, most agonizing
ride I've ever taken to this

day. The drive to the airport.

Scaramouche was looking like somebody
killed his dog.

The whole story was right there on his
face, that they were doing this wrong,

man.

They really were.

Scarlett and I are just barely talking.

She's looking out of her window, I'm
looking out of my window.

I'm trying to convince myself that I'm
going to find a way out, and I've got to

find a way out.

Our life is dependent on it.

We pull up at the airport, and as much
as we wanted to get out of the country,

we were hesitant to get out the car.

My head was hurting. My stomach was
hurting.

And it was like, oh, my God, just
please, just get us through this. I'll

be a dummy again, I promise.

And it seemed like the second we walked
in, you could almost hear them out of

the parking lot.

If I wasn't sure, I was sure then that
everything wasn't going to be all right.

because they got out of there as quick
as they could.

We had talked about abandoning the bags,
but it didn't work out that way.

We walked in, and it was like, shoot,
this is not how I remember it.

There were the counters, and there was
the luggage lines, people behind us,

people in front of us, and, like, how
are we going to get rid of these bags?

As soon as the guy picks it up.

What's in the back?

He's looking at my face like, what is
this?

I'm like, what are you talking about?

He's like, what's this, man?

Like, what is this big book that feels
like a rock when I hit it?

And I'm like, I don't know what you're
talking about, man.

And then they throw it through the x
-ray.

My mouth was dry.

And my head was pounding.

Okay, step to the side.

And that's it.

The party was over.

Driving with her?

Scarlett's looking at him and they got a
bag and they asked her, you know.

In the back.

And she's saying the same thing I'm
saying.

I don't know what you're talking about.

Security.

Okay, step to the side.

They took us in the next room.

They want you to do everything but get
naked.

And then they recognize, okay.

They're not actually trying to carry
anything on their person on the plane.

And let's throw all your personal stuff
on the counter for everybody to look at.

And then flip it over and just cut the
bag and whoops, what is this?

Is this a giant brick of marijuana?

And we're like, oh, I don't know who did
that.

You need to start talking.

We didn't put nothing in the bag.

I don't know who put that there. I don't
know, man.

Yo, there's some guys that drove us here
must have did that, man.

We don't know who did that.

We didn't put nothing in the bag.

The guards were like, oh, you're trying
to play us, man.

You think we're stupid?

So the handcuffs come out.

We get handcuffed.

Some wooden rail.

And they kept asking, who are these
guys? What's their names?

Who put the drugs in the bag? We don't
know.

Give me their number. Give me their
address.

Who the bags belong to? And I recognized
how smart they had been because I

didn't know the boss's name. And I
didn't know our contact in Jamaica.

I had no addresses.

I had no phone numbers.

And it just really hit me like a hammer,
actually.

Like, man, you really stupid, man.

Because you don't know nothing.

So we're sitting there on the rail for a
while.

Seemed like hours.

And then we took the transport.

It's not like you went through a back
door into the parking lot and then you

were whisked away. It was like you're
walking through the airport shackled up.

Very sobering experience.

We had no clue where we were going to
be.

No clue whatsoever.

They opened up the back of the van.

All the sun hits you and it's like you
shuffle your way out, you know, because

you're all shackled up.

I took one look at the place, and I'm
like, wow.

It looked like pre -Civil War torture
chamber.

This is bad.

The smell hits you.

Wet, human waste, rotten food, you know,
garbage.

I never smelled it.

Despair.

It's got a smell to it.

Better believe it.

Scarlett was clinging to me.

I can't blame her. I mean, she was
scared.

Just all pushed into these two rooms.

I have never felt as alarmed and alert
in my life.

The Jamaicans right away noticed that we
were a couple.

They're rude, man.

They're angry. They're hostile.

And I wasn't going to tell her not to
hold my hand.

And I wasn't going to tell her not to
lean on me. I mean, come on.

You know, I did this thought.

But I'm thinking to myself, I have got
to get her out of here.

That night I didn't sleep.

As the night wore on and the air
changed.

It was like a dampness in the air.

I was numb.

It was me who felt withdrawn in my
heart.

And that was just the guilt, the
realization of how badly I had led her.

First day in prison, we found out that
if you wanted to eat, then you had to

a guard to go and get you some food from
the street.

Hey, hey.

Yo, can you get us something to eat?

While we were waiting for the food, I
could see Americans and other

Someone's taking my money.

One of those started yelling, my money's
missing.

You took my money?

And our food came back and she just
rushed me.

That's my stuff.

you robbed me. You robbed me.

Grabbing at me.

Swinging at me.

We were fighting for our lives, you
know.

Fighting to eat.

It was like I was walking through the
jungle, for real.

I was expecting something bad to happen
every second.

I'm thinking if we got to do time, what
are we going to do then? Because we're

not going to be here.

This is just a jail.

What happens when they send us to the
prison prison?

Can't pay for your food forever.

How are we going to live?

How many fights can I possibly win?

Because right now I'm only dealing with,
you know, 30 people that maybe have a

problem with us.

TKY and Connett Jones.

It was after we had been there for a
couple of days. The embassy came, and,

know, it was okay, so who do you want us
to get in touch with?

Scarlett gave the embassy man her
grandmother's address and telephone

But in her heart, she really didn't
think it was going to do any good.

I'm still torn about whether to get in
contact with my family. I was

ready to accept whatever punishment I
had coming to me before disappointing my

mother.

No, I'll stay here and take my lumps.

And the embassy man looked at me like, I
think you've lost your mind. I think

you really need to tell me somebody to
contact back in the States.

If for nothing else, so that when they
find your body, somebody might want to,

you know, get it mailed back.

Don't you think you want to do that?

And when he put it to me that way, okay.

Here's my mom and dad's name and address
and telephone number.

I still was like, well, only call him if
something happens to me.

And he's like, uh... Something did
happen to you.

Okay.

Scarlett was thinking, like, oh my God,
my grandmother, she's not going to

believe this.

I had the guilt of her on one half of my
body, and now I had...

The guilt of dragging my family into my
BS on the other half.

Thanksgiving had come and gone now.

This is the point where my mother's
going, okay, now when's my child going

call me?

So that was weighing on my mind.

After a day or two, I see this one
particular lawyer that really seems to

his stuff.

And I say if there's any way we could
get this guy, this guy can get us out of

here. I kept motioning at him with my
eyes like, hey, hey.

He came to talk to us and hear our
story.

Some guys set us up and we got caught
carrying ganja through the airport, ma

'am. You've got to help us out of here.

How much ganja are we talking about?

I don't know, like hardly nothing.

And he was, it's going to cost some
money.

What? I believe I could have introduced
you a fine.

You guys are able to pay this fine.

You're just about good to go home.

Okay, we can get out of this.

But will we be able to get out of this?

Here's my card.

I mean, we went there because we didn't
have any money.

So obviously we didn't have any money.

So now we're going to have to figure out
which family members are going to be

able to come up with this money.

We gave you some hope.

You just might not have to die in this
place.

After a day or two, the embassy guy came
and said, hey, you're going to make a

phone call today.

He pretty much told me, I'm calling your
mom right now.

I had no words because I really didn't
want to talk to her.

And I heard her voice.

Hello, Mom.

She hadn't slept.

She was crying.

And I'm trying to sound like, you know,
I'm all right, Mom. You know, come on.

You know, I'm sorry I messed up.

It's like if I had stabbed her, it
couldn't have hurt her worse.

No, really, it's good.

Just hearing her say, are you okay?

It just broke me.

She's like, look, your father and I are
going to do whatever we got to do.

Because we're going to get you out of
there.

I love you too.

When I hung up the phone, I told the
embassy guy, I need a minute.

I felt the weight of it all.

Everything I had done.

Every mistake.

And how everybody was paying for it. Not
just me.

And all of a sudden it felt like it just
dropped the house on me.

And I cried like a baby for like five
minutes.

And I sucked it up.

I said, OK, you know, you got to go back
out there into the jungle.

And I put back on the mask, put back on
the poker face.

And away we go.

I think like another day, a lawyer came
back and said he'd been on the phone

with my parents.

I've told them I see what the fine was.

They are sending the money.

I know it was at least $10 ,000 they had
to come up with.

And he was like, it's a done deal for
you, kid.

You're going to be out of here.

Right away, I'm like, what about
Scarlett?

And he said, I've spoken to her
grandmother, but I haven't heard back

I can't just leave her here, man.

I'm thinking to myself, I have got to
get her out of here.

And he looked me dead in the face and he
said, you can't do anything for her

here. You do understand.

And when he said that, it was like a
smack in the face that I needed because

was true.

I mean, yeah, I could stay there and
protect her, but I couldn't do anything

get her out by staying there.

When I left my lawyer and I walked back
towards that cell block, I didn't know

what I was going to tell him.

Because the bottom line was, I'm free
and you're not.

You know, how you would run back and go,
hey, I'm going home.

And I'm leaving you.

I was so torn. I couldn't even be happy.

And I'm like, my folks ain't money.

And I'm going home.

She grabbed me. She was smiling.

She was happy.

But while she was holding me, I felt her
just shaking.

I'm going to get you out of here.

Don't worry about it.

I'm not going to leave you here.

I promise you.

You can't wait?

They open those bars, and they point at
you, and they say, come on out.

And you're like, I'm free.

And they close that bar behind me, and
you hear it.

Bang. And they lock it. Clink.

And I'm walking away.

And I'm trying really hard not to look
back.

And I look back anyway.

And I just see her holding on to the
bars, you know.

No, it wasn't a good moment.

It was at least three days after
Thanksgiving when I got home.

My folks were there.

You know, it was like a family hug.

And I felt my father, you know, crying.

Once again, it hit me like, look what
you've done, man.

Look what you put everybody through.

And it's not even over yet.

I was home, but I couldn't be happy
until I got Scarlett home.

Scarlett's grandmother was definitely
the only hope.

It got down to just that grandma hated
me.

At that point, I understood.

I explained to her grandmother.

Scarlett's in a lot of trouble, and she

Every moment, I thought about what she

her.

I believe it was 10 days.

It felt like a month.

She walked up on the block.

If I'd have been a little corny and a

have ran to her like a harlequin
romance.

But I stood there and I just looked at
her and I waited for her to get closer

and closer.

And when she was standing right in front
of me, I tried to crush her.

I just squeezed her.

And I squeezed her.

And I felt like I wasn't going to stop
squeezing her.

Until she had to tell me, stop squeezing
me, you're killing me.

But that's how I felt.

It was like I was free now.

We went to see Joe.

I was so angry.

Homicidal. And after a while of talking
with Joe, what I had already been

thinking proved to be true.

The guys in Jamaica had robbed the guys
in the States.

And we just happened to be the pawns in
the middle.

Scarlett and I eventually moved in
together.

We were together at least another year,
but I never forgave myself.

It was something between us that went
unsaid, but it was always between us.

Maybe just looking at that person can
remind you those experiences.

I believe it cost us a lot.

Innocence, trust, love paid big time for
that trip.

It really made me second think
everything in my life. Value things much

differently because money is only so
important.

Would I ever do that again?

Trust me, it's not worth it. You lose
