I'd make a pretty good knight.

Well, La Mancha is also
a place, and it is said to be

home to the country's
most feared spirit,

the Spanish boogeyman,

"Tío Camuñas."

Let me guess.

That Spanish boogeyman
is hanging around

the castle today?

According to the owners
of the castle, absolutely.

They say that this place
is plagued

with paranormal activity.

And when you dig
into the history of the castle,

it's easy to see why.

They say, "There is no ground
in Spain more soaked in blood

than Belmonte Castle."

South of Madrid lies the vast
plateau known as "La Mancha."

It's a savage landscape
with a savage history to match.

And nowhere is
that violence more apparent

than at Belmonte Castle.

Built in by one of Spain's
most famous knights,

Don Juan Pacheco.

The castle is at the center

of many of Spain's
bloodiest battles.

Its goriest chapter begins
when French forces invade

the Iberian Peninsula
in 1807.

More than a million
Spaniards die,

and the French seize
control of Belmonte,

turning it into an infamous
prison where hundreds

of Spanish fighters are
tortured and executed.

The most notorious of these
prisoners is Francisco Sanchez,

who the French dubbed
"Tío Camuñas."

His bloodthirsty rampage
wreaked such havoc

on French forces,

they tremble in fear
at the mention of his name.

Today, his violent legend
lives on.

Tío Camuñas is known
as the Spanish boogeyman,

and he's been scaring kids
into behaving for centuries.

Some say he still
roams the castle

looking for more victims.

But the Boogeyman isn't
the only famous figure

said to be haunting its halls.

Wife of Napoleon III,
Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew,

Empress Eugenia De Montijo,
lives in the castle

in the late 19th century.

When war breaks out between
Britain and the Zulu kingdom,

Eugenia helps get her son
Louis Napoleon deployed

with the British army.

When he dies in South Africa
at the young age of 23,

Eugenia is racked with guilt.

She conducts dozens of seances
at Belmonte, desperate to speak

with her only child.

Many believe those rituals
unlocked powerful dark forces

that remain trapped
at Belmonte today.

Could this explain why visitors
and staff regularly report

hearing otherworldly voices...

...and seeing inexplicable
shadow figures?

Many have run screaming
from the castle,

These are all things that can
affect us physically,

mentally, maybe make people
see a few things.

the Atlantic on a seven hour
flight to Madrid.

Then they set out
on the one hour drive

through the arid
plains of La Mancha

on their way to Belmonte.

And that's got to be
like hundreds of years old.

Yeah.

I was at home one night looking
at the security camera feeds

from all over the castle
on my tablet.

The camera in one of the rooms
upstairs kept flickering,

despite no one being
in the castle.

And when I zoomed in
for a closer look, I could see

the image of a woman
dressed in white.

And it looked like she was
crossing between rooms.

That's when I took
the screenshot.

Then I turned off the tablet
and didn't turn it back on

for a couple of days.

It freaked me out so much.

Wow!

And you have a story as well.

Yes.

My experience happened
during the COVID lockdown.

A friend called me at home
late one night and said

that he could see the castle

and it looked like
a light was left on.

So I drove up here with
my family to make sure no one

was breaking in or trespassing.

We got here
and could not find anyone.

But then I looked up
and saw a shadow figure

walking around
the top of the tower,

brushing up against the stones.

I've never been so scared
in my life.

Is that the tower that people
have seen a hanging figure

outside the window?

Yes, the same one.

Do you all have a theory
as to why

there's so much activity
in this whole castle?

I think Eugenia is still here.

Eugenia?

According to legend,
Eugenia did rituals and seances

to try and make contact
with her son,

who died relatively young.

That might have stirred up
some activity.

down, as if it was you falling

From my perspective,
could have been anything.

To me, if that's exactly where
people have seen that hanging

figure and you see a shadow
plummeting to the ground

as if someone were trying
to escape the tower,

if they ran out of rope,
if they lost their grip.

They just fell straight
to their death right here.

That could be like
a residual haunting.

But we did have
the surveillance camera rolling,

so we could
check that footage,

see if we got anything.

The next day, Phil and I split
up to gather more intel

on the infamous Tío Camuñas.

with the mayor of the town

of Camuñas,
Fernando Gallego Vega.

In addition to being mayor,
Fernando is also a historian

who spent years
studying the legend

of the Spanish boogeyman.

Mayor, thank you so much
for agreeing to meet with me.

I am so excited to learn more
about Tío Camuñas.

Can you tell me more about him?

Tío Camuñas was just
a normal man in this village.

So, the French invasion
happened in the early 1800s.

Little by little,
the French started to take over

more parts of Spain.

And when they started
to occupy this region,

Tío Camuñas' brother,
Juan Pedro, began to speak out,

and started to have issues

with the local authorities,
who were pro-French.

So, Juan Pedro was sentenced
to death and killed,

and that's when Tío Camuñas

swore vengeance
against the French.

Wait, so, Tío Camuñas' brother
was killed?

How did they kill him?

By a firing squad.

After he died,
the French hanged Juan Pedro

from one of the windmills
just outside of town.

And they left him hanging there
for 72 days

to show the rest
of the villagers what happens

to agitators and dissidents.

That's totally barbaric.

This was when Tío Camuñas
formed a small army

to fight back
against the French.

That sounds like someone
trying to save his town,

trying to save his country.

It was the French who really
changed the history.

Tío Camuñas was very much
a hero, a freedom fighter.

And his fame went very far.

So, the French
turned his legend

into the evil boogeyman
that it is today.

While Heather speaks
with the mayor, I've arranged

to meet a local blacksmith,
Julio Ramirez,

who claims he had a paranormal
experience that may be

connected to Belmonte Castle,
and I want to interrogate it.

As I understand it,
something happened to you

that was incredibly unsettling
at a windmill nearby.

Can you walk me through it?

One night, me and a couple
of my friends went to go work

inside the La Union Windmill
on the edge of town.

As soon as we arrived,
something was off.

When we went inside,
we felt a sudden,

mysterious drop in temperature.

Then, as we were
climbing the stairs,

we all heard a strange,
disembodied voice call out,

"what do you want?"

There's also a piece
of machinery inside the windmill

that makes a very
particular noise that is only

audible when the windmill
is connected.

On this night, the windmill was
not in operation, but we all

strangely heard this mechanical
noise by gears turning

as if it was in fact running
while we were in there.

We're here investigating
the Belmonte Castle

and Tío Camuñas.

Is there a connection there
to this windmill?

There's actually a very
strong connection.

The windmill is where Tío
Camuñas' brother, Juan Pedro,

was hanged on display
for 72 days.

Wow.

We got the story all wrong.

Tío Camuñas is a hero,
not a boogeyman.

How did he die?

Tío Camuñas became such a big
problem for the French army

that at some point they
lured him to Belmonte Castle,

where he was captured,
tortured and eventually

but his remains
have never been found.

It looks like a figure
fighting for his life.

The Knights of Belmonte were
nothing compared to the most

famous knight
in Spanish history,

Rodrigo Díaz De Vivar,

also known as "El Cid."

He accomplished much in life
and almost as much in death.

In the late 11th century,
El Cid became a national hero,

defending the city of Valencia,
then ruling it for five years.

Then he died,
and things got really weird.

The story goes that when
invaders next attacked Valencia,

El Cid rose from the dead
and led his knights

back into battle.

And it worked.

Supposedly, the invaders ran,

terrified from
the zombie knight.

And as crazy as this story is,
apparently, it's true.

Well, partly.

When the city was threatened,
El Cid's wife allegedly had

her late husband's body
exhumed, propping him up

in full armor
to rally the troops.

Inspiring, but also
super gross.

It looks like a figure
fighting for his life.
