My brothers, each father must
give his heart to his children

By giving his heart to his children
he will also give them life,..

..his experience, his
protection, love

To live in harmony with the
Eternal and in peace with Him..

..and with his brothers, the father
must give his heart..

..to his children
and must listen to their worries.

Man 1: We have always lived
and live following this rule

Man 1 : And we have always
punished the transgressor thereof

Man 2: According to this holy rule
we crossed the desert,..

..comforted along the path by
the lead of Moses, our father.

Man 2: We suffered all kinds of
privations, sustained only..

..by the faith of our fathers,
by the rules that make us brothers

..by the promise of reaching the
Promised Land.

Man 3: And we came from the
ancient pact with the Eternal.

Man 3: We raised our tents,
pastured the flocks in peace..

..and brotherhood as ever.
But the Philistines assaulted us,..

..killed our children,
raided our cattle,..

..obstructed our work,
took our defensive weapons..

..and even the stone to sharpen
the plough and the axes for the wood.

They live in their cities,
rich and arrogant,..

..lead by warrior kings.
They have money and embroidered dresses,..

..fat cattle and stone houses.

Man 2: And as always,
we want to give the heart..

.. to our children, but also
serenity, the possibility..

..of working in peace,
the safety of being protected.

Man 4: We want to give them cities
strong with walls and forts,..

..and with stone houses
as those of the Philistines.

Man 4: We want our wandering
to be over.

Man 4: We want to raise
a temple to the Eternal,..

..here, in the land
that He promised to us.

Man 2: We want a king, Samuel,
as all the nations.

A king that may judge us and lead us.

Samuel: My brothers,
there is no king for our people.

And each of us in Israel
may do what seems most right to him.

There is no king that orders
or judgeth, because men's judgement..

..is often untruthful.
There is no king in Israel,..

..but the brother, judging the
brother, judgeth himself..

..and acts for good.
There is no king in Israel..

..because the king of Israel is the
Eternal, Who freed us from slavery.

He alone is perfection and He alone
may judge and order.

As our father Moses did,
I will bow down before Him..

..to ask for counsel and light.

I asked the Eternal and He told
me "Hearken to the voice.."

"of the people in all that
they say to thee. For they.."

"have not rejected thee, but me,
that I should not reign over them".

"According to what they have done from
when I brought them out of Egypt,.."

"as they have forsaken me, and
served strange gods.."

"so do they also unto thee.
Therefore, hearken to their voice:"

"but yet testify to them,
and foretell them"

"the right of the king.."

"that shall reign over
the people of Israel".

This will be the right of the
king that shall reign over you.

He will take your sons
and pit them in his army,..

..to run before his
royal chariot

To be his tribunes, and his
centurions, and to plough his fields..

..and to reap his corn,
and to make him..

..arms and chariots.
Your daughters also he will take..

..to make him ointments,
to anoint his body,..

..to light the fire in
his kitchens,..

..to bake the bread
for his table.

And he will take your fields,
and your vineyards,..

..and your best olive yards

..and give them to his servants.
Moreover he will take the tenth

..of your corn, and of the revenues
of your vineyards..

..and crops to
give to his servants.

Your servants also, and handmaids,
and your goodliest young men,..

and your asses, he will take away,
and put them to his work.

Your flocks also he will tithe,..

..and you shall be his servants.

And you shall cry out in that
day from the face of the king,..

..whom you have chosen to yourselves:
and the Eternal will not hear you in that day,

..nor hearken to your cry.

Man 4: There shall be a king over us
And we also will be..

..like all nations.
This is our will.

Man 4: There shall be a king over us
who shall judge us, and go..

..out before us
and fight our battles for us.

Once again you have
betrayed our Lord.

Then at your expenses
you shall know what meaneth..

..to be subject to a king's will.

[By the will of the tribes of
Israel, Saul was anointed king.]

Saul: Whoever will not exit his
tent and follow..

..to battle his king, Saul, he will
see his cattle treated as such

(BELLOWING)

(shouting) Say it to all!

[So Saul was the first king of Israel.
He was a great king, but like the kings..]

[..of the other nations, he used
his power with arrogance..]

[..and lead the meek shepherds
of Israel to war.]

(CRIES OF WAR)

[From the time of Samuel,
kings succeeded to kings,..]

[..wars to wars,
tears to tears.]

[There were great kings and small kings,
but all sought luxury and power.]

[The kingdom became so big
that king Solomon had..]

[..to divide it among the tribes
and so the tribes of Judas..]

[..took the arms
against the tribes of Israel.]

[For the first time, brothers
killed brothers.]

[And again other kings came and
all, by the power of the crown,..]

[..transgressed, yet their
tombs have no crown..]

[..but dung for a bed and
worms for a litter.]

[Death, destruction, exile,
corruption, war, this is..]

[..what the kings brought.
But for a thousand years, the prophets..]

[..have fostered the hope
among the humble people of Israel,..]

[..of a just king, a Messiah
who will inevitably come..]

[..because the Eternal promised.]

Physician: One moment and I am finished.

(HEROD GROANS)

Physician: Thou wilt feel relief.
They have just arrived today:

..webs from Cuma
soaked in pure honey from Nemi.

(HEROD GROANS)
Herod: And so?

Soldier: The spies have
never lost sight of them.

They were seen in Caesarea
and Jericho, they are wise men,..

..princes, astrologers and say
that mysterious signs lead..

..them to Judea to
find the new king.

Another king in my lands?

Yea, the king of kings, they say,
the Messiah.

Herod: What do Scriptures say
about this Messiah?

Where should he be born?

Secretary: In Bethlehem of Juda.
For so it is written by the prophet:

"And thou Bethlehem the land of Juda
art not the least among the princes

for out of thee shall come forth the
captain that shall rule

..my people, Israel".

Herod: We are honoured by your
presence in Jerusalem.

Herod: What sign have you seen
of the new born king?

Wise Man: We saw a star brighter
than the rest..

..so that the rest disappeared
From this prodigy we understood..

..that a king had been born in Israel
and we came to homage him.

Go and diligently inquire
after the child,

and when you have found him,
bring me word again, that I also..

..may come and adore him.

(HEROD WHISPERS)

Wise King: Gold for thy kingdom,
incense for thy divinity,..

..myrrh, the bitterest herb,
from which an ointment is made..

..to anoint corpses,
for thy suffering.

Angel: Beware of Herod, take the
child and his mother, and fly.

(CRIES OF WOMEN
AND WAILING OF BABIES)

(HEROD GROANS)

He is worsening by the hour.
He cannot sleep anymore.

The pain is insufferable.
We must do something.

Yesterday he cried all night.

We tried any cure,
but he could not endure

..even baths in sulphurous water.
Yesterday he collapsed twice.

There is nothing else to do.
We must continue with foot baths.

..of scalding water and cinder.

(HEROD GASPS)

(HEROD CRIES)

Crowd: Herod is dead!
Come, come!

(UPROARS OF THE CROWD)

(agonising) They wanted my death.
They rejoiced for my death.

But Herod is alive. Alive!

The two heads of the
rebellion shall be burnt alive.

My son, Antipater,
who desired my throne,..

..shall be choked.

(panting) And whoever
took part in the rebellion..

..shall be strangled.

And the high priest shall
be deposed in infamy.

I want all the most
illustrious men of my kingdom

..to be all gathered.

Scholars, priests, teachers,
they shall all be gathered right now.

To be executed
when I die.

I want tears for my death.

(MURMURING OF THE CROWD)

Child (shouting): Herod is dead!

(CONFUSED SHOUTS)

(CRIES OF ANIMALS)

[After the death of Herod the Great,
internal struggles tore Israel.]

[Herod the Great was the last king.
Then, Rome divided the country..]

[into four tetrarchies and kept
direct control over the city..]

[..of Jerusalem, but each year
the faithful would make..]

[..a pilgrimage to the holy
city during the festivities.]

[The chosen people would pray
in the temple of the fathers..]

[..and humbly hope and faithfully
wait for the coming of the Messiah,..]

[..the king promised by the prophets.
That king who would have killed..]

[..the tyrants with his flaming
sword and satisfied..]

[..the thirst for justice of
the nations.]

Mary: Today it is a very
important day for thee.

Today thou art a man and mayest
enter the house of the Eternal.

Blessed be His name.

For the first time thou wilt
offer a sacrifice to Him.

Take, this is thy tallit.
Knowest thou what a tallit be?

A thousand years ago, our people
were slaves in Egypt,..

..until the day when Moses,
our father, freed them.

And for forty years, under the sun
and the rain, our people..

..walked having only a white
wool shawl as shelter.

Henceforth each man
of Israel hath his tallit

From today thou also art a man
and with thy head covered

by thy garment, thou mayest
speak with doctors and teachers

..who studied holy law.
For from today thou belongest

..to the law, my son.

And the law belongeth to thee.

- Joseph: Shall we go?
- Mary: Yea.

Are those with the red cloak
Caesar's soldiers?

Yea, and we must obey
their orders.

Are they the masters of Jerusalem?

Jerusalem hath no masters.
There are neither masters..

..nor servants here,
only the Eternal is master.

Child: But we give
tithes to the Romans.

Elder: Not only to the Romans.
It is a tribute that is divided..

..between them and the priests.

This is the Court of the Gentiles,
where we shall buy the lamb..

..for the sacrifice.

We have sought thee everywhere.

about my father's business?

Every tree therefore that bringeth not forth
good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.

He that hath two coats, let him

which is appointed you.

We merchants have
been greedy and grasping.

We have seen our people cry
in poverty while we..

..for we took advantage of the
authority given from the law.

..to exact taxes larger than
due and grow fat..

..on our brothers. .

Baptist: Come and wash
your sins.

souls with this water..

..for we betrayed the
innocent for money.

Baptist: I baptize thee in
water unto penance.

If thou didst know the gift of God and who
he is that saith to thee: Give me to drink;

thou perhaps wouldst have asked of
him, and he would have given thee

living water.

Thou hast nothing wherein to draw,
and the well is deep.

From whence then hast thou living water?

Jesus: Whosoever drinketh of this water
shall thirst again.

but he that shall drink of the water that
I will give him shall not thirst for ever.

Give me this water, that I may not
thirst..

nor come hither to draw.

Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

I have no husband.

Thou hast said well: I have no husband.
For thou hast had five husbands.

And he whom thou now hast is not
thy husband.

Jesus: This, thou hast said truly.

a seer, a prophet.

We Samaritans say that the holy
place is on this mountain,..

..and you Jews say that at
Jerusalem is the holy place.

Who is right?

Woman, believe me that the hour
cometh, when you shall neither

nor in Jerusalem, adore the Father.

But the hour cometh and now is,
when the true adorers..

..shall adore the Father in
spirit and in truth.

God is a spirit: and they that adore
him must adore him in spirit and in truth.

I know that the Messiah cometh
who will tell us all things.

I am he, who am speaking with thee.

Samaritan woman: Come, and see a man who
has told me all things whatsoever I have done.

You yourselves do bear me witness
that I said that I am not the Messiah

corruption, and uncleanness..

..have made their nest in
the king's court!

A calamity shall fall upon
the children of Israel.

Cleanse yourselves from your sins,
do penance!

Blot out the abomination
from the court of Herod!

People of Israel,
wash your sins!

King of Israel,
cover thy head with ashes..

..and do penance!

Man: Herod Antipas,
the captain of the guards is here.

Captain: He was shouting in the streets
violent accusations against thee..

..and against Herodias, at the
very gate of the fortress.

People had assembled.
We tried to stop him.

But why did he do that?
No man dared to speak.

..nor the doctors of the law,

What is it to him?
What doth it profit him?

A teacher, they say, a prophet.

What didst thou do it?

Wash thyself of thy sins.

He is the only king.

And hast thou the courage

I only say the truth. It takes
no courage to speak the truth.

What thou didst can make thee

"It is good to give praise to the Lord:

They say he was in desert

Jesus: This day is fulfilled

What happens to thy son? Didst thou
know thou wast a prophet's mother?

Jesus: Doubtless you will say to me this
similitude: Physician, heal thyself.

No prophet is accepted in his
own country, among his kindreds.

In truth I say to You, there were
many widows in the days of Elias..

..when heaven was shut up
three years and six months..

..when there was a great famine
And to none of them was..

..Elias sent, but to a poor widow
woman near Sidon.

And there were many lepers in Israel
in the time of Eliseus the prophet:

and none of them was cleansed
but Naaman the Syrian.

Faithful (shouting): He blasphemeth!
Out of this place!

Woman: He is a heretic!

Man: He compared himself
to Elias, to Eliseus!

Man: Come back no more!
This is not thy village any more!

All (shouting and angry):
Shame! Away, away! Go away!

He is here. He hath come to look

He wants us to follow him.

His mother is here with him too.

And who will provide for my family?
Mine live of my labour.

let down your nets for a draught.

dare not defend themselves.

All prefer to keep them quiet
and not to risk a complaint.

Andrew: I never met one who
was honest.

Andrew: They are the shame of...

Judge not: and you shall
not be judged. Condemn not:

He is still there, preaching
to the people of the land!

To the people whence he came.
He speaks like a tiller.

He claims to be a teacher of the
sacred by talking of sheep,..

..of trees, of vineyards, of
how to bake bread, of how..

..they build houses.

the simplest rules.

Even children know that
their office is shameful.

A publican cannot even
bear witness in judgment.

An honest father of a family
would never give his daughter..

A prophet doth not embrace
the dung.

Pharisee: Why dost thou eat and
drink with publicans and sinners?

They that are in health need not a
physician, but they that are ill.

For I came not to call the
just,..

..but sinners.

Pharisee: If thou wilt them do
penance, why eatest thou with them?

I will have mercy and not sacrifice.

Pharisee: Why do we Pharisees fast?
Why do John's disciples..

..fast? Why do you not follow
their example too?

Can the children of the bridegroom mourn,
as long as the bridegroom is with them?

But the days will come, when the
bridegroom shall be taken away from them,

..and then they shall fast.

But religion is not made
of new things!

And no man drinking old wine hath
presently a mind to new:

for he saith: The old is better.

- Priest: Baruch.
- Faithful: Baruch.

Man: When can we speak to him?
There he is.

Man: Peace be with thee, Master.
Blessed be the name of the Eternal.

Man: We come in the name
of John the Baptist..

..from the fortress of Machaerus.
We could speak with him.

They spoke to him, they saw him.
They come from Machaerus,..

..they saw the Baptist.

John?

Yes, they also spoke to him.
It is he who sent them.

Man: He sent us to ask you
this, for many rumours..

..about thee come to him.
And some crieth scandal.

Therefore, in his name, we ask thee:
"Art thou he that art to come,.."

"or look we for another?"

Go and relate to John what
you have heard and seen.

The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers...

The poor have the gospel preached to
them. And blessed is he that..

The sabbath was made for man,

As our father Moses

Judge not according to the appearance:

"None of you keepeth the law."

While here there is none who
did not come quite out

..respect and observance
of the law. There is none,..

..I am certain, that doth not pray
in the temple according to the law.

None that doth not do the ritual
washings or doth not pay the tithe.

Yet thou sayest that none of
us keepeth the law.

Woe to you, Pharisees, because
you tithe mint and rue..

and rue and every herb and pass
over judgment and the charity of God.

Now these things you ought to have done,
and not to leave the other undone.

Woe to you, because you love the
uppermost seats in the synagogues

..and salutations in the marketplace.

Woe to you, because you are as
sepulchres that appear not:

and men that walk over are not aware.

In saying these things, thou
reproachest us lawyers also.

Jesus: Woe to you lawyers also,
because you load men with burdens

which they cannot bear and you yourselves
touch not the packs with one of your fingers.

monuments of the prophets:

and your
fathers killed them.

Truly you bear witness that
you consent to their doings.

For they indeed killed them:
and you build their sepulchres.

For this cause also the wisdom of God
said: I will send to them prophets

That the blood of all the prophets which
was shed from the foundation of the world

may be required of this generation.

Woe to you lawyers, for you have
taken away the key of knowledge.

And many would have defended him.

How cometh thou seest now?

That man that is called Jesus
made clay and anointed my eyes

All this cannot
be pleasing to the Romans.

Have you become mad?

Pharisee 1: Stop these blasphemies!

Peace? If we could make them
hold their peace, the stones..

I saw him. The people
cheer him as a king.

They are all with him! I have seen.

I saw them not.

I have always spoken where
all might hear me.

I have spoken openly to the world. I have
always taught in the synagogue and in the temple,

and in secret I have spoken nothing.

Why askest thou me? Ask them who have
heard what I have spoken unto them.

Behold they know what things I have said.

Soldier: Answerest thou the
high priest so?

If I have spoken false,
give testimony of the false;

but if truth, why strikest thou me?

The witnesses.

Soldier: I found no man.

High Priest: What have ye to say
of the prisoner, Jesus of Nazareth?

Witness 1 : He said,
"I will destroy this temple"

"..made with hands and
within three days I will build another.."

"..not made with hands."

Witness 2: He said that he could destroy
the temple and rebuild it.

Witness 3: He said that
he was the son of God.

High Priest: Answerest thou nothing to
the things that are laid to thy charge?

Art thou the Christ then?
I adjure thee by God,

..that thou tell us if thou be
the Christ the Son of God.

Thou hast said it.

He hath blasphemed!

What further need have
we of witnesses?

Behold, now you have heard
the blasphemy. What think you?

(PHARISEE SPITS)

Pharisee (angry): He is guilty of death!

He hath been questioned by the
Great Council. I was able..

I know people.

They let Peter in also,
but we have had few news.

I know that at one moment
they were very busy.

They were looking for witnesses.
For no man may be condemned..

..without at least two witnesses,
but they found not..

..many and it seemeth that the
few whom they found

. .did not agree.
Then the situation..

that they are carrying him to Pilate.

Priest 1: He must listen to us.

(BLARE OF TRUMPET)

Priest: Behold,
the legate from Rome is coming.

Pilate: I want a concrete
accusation against this man.

Pilate: It is not enough for
me that he blasphemed..

..against your religion.

Rome hath not care if somebody
breaketh the law of your fathers.

Not only this maketh him guilty.
We bring him to thee to shew..

..our friendship.
We caught him inciting

..our people to rebellion
against thy government.

He was inviting the people
not to pay the tribute to Caesar.

And he was claiming to be the king and Messiah.

Hast thou heard what
they say against thee?

Art thou the king of the Jews?

Sayest thou this thing of thyself,
or have others told it thee of me?

They came to me.

Thy own nation delivered thee
into my hands that I may judge..

..whether thou be guilty or innocent.

I have nothing to accuse thee.

Thy people, of thy blood and
religion, delivered thee up to me.

What do I know?

Am I a Jew?

Thy nation delivered thee
into my hands.

What hast thou done?
Wilt thou truly be king?

My kingdom is not of this world.

If my kingdom were of this world,
my servants would certainly strive..

that I should not be delivered.

But my kingdom is not of this world.

Then thou art not a king.

Thou sayest that I am a king.
For this was I born and grown..

give testimony to the truth.

Every one that is of
the truth heareth my voice.

(ironic voice) The truth.
What is truth?

I find no cause in this man.

You brought him to be judged.
Certainly you collected proofs.

his offences.

those things wherein you accuse him.

Behold, by the law of Rome,
nothing worthy..

..of death is done to him.

I will chastise him
therefore and release him.

Priest: Thou dost not understand
for what danger he standeth.

He stirreth up the people,
teaching throughout all Judea,

.. beginning from Galilee
to this place.

He hath mad proselytes.

They worship him as a holy man
because his spread a rumour..

..that he worketh miracles, healing
the sick and raising the dead.

Pharisee: The people
tried to make him king.

Priest: When he entered into
Jerusalem, a few days ago,..

..they tributed to him
a true triumph.

In truth, it was his disciples who
framed the business, nevertheless..

And then, there is the affair of the tributes
This man hath stirred the people..

..not to pay the tribute to Rome.

Pharisee (whispering): We must
call the people.

(INDISTINCT VOICES)

Pharisee: Crucify him! He must die!

Pharisee: He hath blasphemed.
He hath raised a tumult!

Pharisee 1 : He is an enemy of Rome!
He insulteth the authority of Caesar!

Pharisee 2: Let justice be done! He is a
false teacher! He stirreth up the people!

Pharisee 3: He is a mad man.

(CROWD UPROARS)

Thou must convince thyself. Behold,
how many witnesses. Thou must understand.

Pilate: Behold the Man.

Pilate: Behold the Man.

Is not enough what he hath
already suffered?

All (shouting): No! Crucify him!
Let justice be done! He must die!

Whence art thou?

Speakest thou not to me? Knowest
thou not that I have power to crucify thee,

..and I have power to release thee?

Thou shouldest not have any
power against me, unless..

.. it were given thee from above.
Therefore, he that hath delivered me..

..to thee hath the greater sin.

As it is your custom that a a
prisoner be released upon the Pasch,..

..Whom will you that I release to You:
Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ?

All (shouting): Barabbas!

What evil hath this man done?

All: Crucify him!

But Barabbas is a murderer!

(ALL SHOUT TOGETHER)

Man: We want Barabbas free!

I am innocent of this blood.

Look you to it.

His blood be upon us and
upon our children.

Behold your king.

All (shouting): Death to him!

If thou release this man, thou art not
Caesar's friend. For whosoever

..maketh himself a king
speaketh against Caesar.

Shall I crucify your king?

We have no king but Caesar.

(MURMURING)

Crucified, like a Roman slave?
Why? Tell me why.

They know not what they do.
They do not understand.
