I was in the courthouse and I was a figure

I was very happy to be there

When I was seven years old,
one of my favorite movies was Titanic.

Uh, but I would like to rebrand
going back to the well

as "leaning into your strengths."

And as you know, this year,
the show got a little bit of a facelift.

Like many people in this room
can understand.

We nipped the "SAG."

And now it's just the "Actor Awards"
but thinking about it got me

thinking about rebranding
'cause at one time or another,

everyone has thought about...

That rolls off the tongue
With melodious ease

I was, uh,
asked to assume the very sad honor

of accepting this award
on O'Hara's behalf.

Um, I know she would have been honored

to receive this award
from her fellow performers,

who I know she respected so much.
She was such big fans of all of yours.

Um, I obviously, you know,
have been reflecting

on the time I was fortunate enough
to spend with her

and working with her.

Um, and something I've just been
marveling at the past few weeks was

really her ability to be generous
and kind and gracious

while never ever minimizing
her own talents

and her own ability to contribute
to the work that we were doing.

She knew she could destroy,

and she wanted to destroy
every day on set.

And, I mean, I haven't said this
to the other actors

'cause I didn't want them to get ideas,

but pretty much every evening
before she had a shooting day on our show,

she would email me and Evan an email,

that always was similar, and it said,

"Hello, I hope
you'll consider the following."

And then there would be a completely
rewritten version of the scene...

...she was in.

Um, and literally 100% of the time,
it made not just her character better,

but it made the scene better
and the entire show better as a whole.

And she really showed that you can be
a genius and be kind,

and one of those things does not
have to come

at the expense of the other
in any way, shape, or form.

So I guess... I'll just leave you with this.

If you have people in your lives
that don't know her work,

if there are kids in your lives

or just people who are
out of touch or stupid or something,

just... show them O'Hara dancing
to Harry Belafonte in Beetlejuice,

show them O'Hara hurting her knee
in Best in Show,

and doing that amazing thing
where she hobbles around.

all morning in my four-banger

so I could get my card,

and I improvised.

"Excuse me, what's going on down there?"

And then I found out it didn't matter.

But what did matter was getting that card.

This card which I've had in my wallet

for the last 36 years.

I love being an actor.

Every person that was part of this film

I wish I was joking there, but anyway.

This man is Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

He establishes authority
and instant gravitas

with every line, instinct and glance.

such small bits.

He shared his method.

Whatever he's doing, we know
we are in the hands of a master.

and he has lived a full one

as an actor and as an activist.

For more than three decades,

he has been a champion of the environment.

He has used his platform as a global star
to sound the alarm about climate crisis.

As the longest serving board member
of Conservation International,

He's also a member of the SAG-Aftra
Foundation's Actors Council,

That said, it is a little weird
to be getting a lifetime achievement award

at the half point of my career.

It's a little early, isn't it?

I'm still a working actor.

I was not an overnight success.

I struggled for about 15 years,
going from acting job

to carpentry and back to acting,

until I finally got a part
in a wildly successful film.

None of this happened on my own.

Thank you, George Lucas.

Thank you, Steven Spielberg.

There were two other people...

There were two other people who had a hand
in guiding me through hard times.

Fred Roos,

casting director and producer
from Francis Ford Coppola.

And my manager for 30 years,
Pat McQueeney.

They were both incredibly persistent,

and they supported me
at a time when I really needed it.

I would not be here without them.

They're no longer with us.

But it feels important
that I think of them now.

I feel them here tonight.

They would be happy for me.

In my third year of college, I was

a little lost.

I was failing at school.

I felt isolated and alone.

And then, I found the company of people

putting on plays, storytellers,

people I once thought were misfits
and geeks, turned out to be

my people.

I found a calling,

a life in storytelling

and an identity
in pretending to be other people.

The work I do with other actors
is one of the...

great joys of my life.

My career is built on their work,
as well as the work of writers,

directors, and every single cast member,

every crew member I've ever...

been on the set with.

I've had incredible collaborators

at every step of the way.

And being able to deliver
the work we create together

is, to an audience,
is an honor and a privilege.

And because of that privilege,

I've come to know myself.

Ours is a tough business to get into.

But in my case, it's been
a tough business to get out of.

Thank God.

Because I love what I do.

As actors,

we get to live many lives,

we get to explore ideas

that affirm and elevate
our shared experience.

The stories we tell have a unique capacity

to create moments of emotional connection.

They bring us together.

So while we're all at different stages
of our lives and careers,

in this room,
we all share something fundamental.

We share the privilege of working

in the world of ideas,
of empathy, of imagination.

Sometimes we make entertainment,

sometimes we make art,

Sometimes we're lucky
to make them both at the same time.

And if we're really fortunate,

we also get to make a living doing it.

Success in this business brings
a certain freedom that comes with...

I wasn't expecting this at all, and, uh...

And I just want to quickly say that, um,

I'm so honored and privileged
to be nominated in categories

with people and actors
and humans that I love,

and I love their work
and what you contribute to our craft.

And this ride has been unbelievable,

so thank you for welcoming me in
and making me feel seen, bro.

Y'all know how I feel about y'all.

Uh...

Uh, I remember--
Yeah, I wanna thank SAG-AFTRA.

I remember as a kid

in this industry,

and you have to earn your vouchers
to be a member of SAG.

And I remember...
you know, I thought it was this club,

this club that I wanted to be in so bad,
but you had to get vouchers

depending on how many lines you had,
and an episode or a show

would determine if you got that
membership card or not.

And...

And I remember watching
all the other actors I looked up to

being a part of that club,
part of SAG-AFTRA,

a part of this community,

and I was like,
"Man, I want to be that one day."

I remember when I got my SAG-AFTRA card,
I was like,

"Man, I'm an entry-level member."

And those guys that were on stage
with the awards and the nice suits,

talking, being in fancy places like that,

that's what I always wanted.

And that kid from North New Jersey
is standing here right now. Um...

Mom, thank you for driving me
back and forth to New York

when we didn't have money
to go through the Harlem Tunnel.

When we were looking
for gas money, parking spaces.

When I went up there
for my auditions. Thank you.

I want to thank Ryan Coogler, um...

for giving me the opportunity
to show what I can do

and to be fearless and to create
a safe space for us to find the truth.

What you do with all the other actors
we had the opportunity to work with.

Wunmi, Miles, Delroy,

Hailee, Jayme, Li Li, Omar.

Everybody that had
something to do with this movie,

you guys lent us your talents
and your time and your vulnerability.

So, thank you for allowing me
do my best work.
