It's been about pretty damn close to
three weeks going hard here in Raleigh

Valley, and I'm thinking I'm insane.

In a bid to enter the mining big leagues
and bank 2 ,000 ounces, Rick

Ness is trying a risky new strategy.

I mean, this was a big gamble, shutting
down the water plant during prime time.

All I'm doing right now is...

We're spending money. I'm a few hundred
thousand dollars deep at this point, and

we haven't been getting any gold the
whole time, so it's just money out the

door.

He's digging out 120 feet of worthless
overburden, over a million cubic yards,

in the hopes of hitting the best pay
dirt he's ever mined.

It's a ton of dirt to move, but I do
believe that the payoff underneath is

to be worth it.

The pay lane.

It's estimated to be 70 feet thick and
the size of two football fields.

We've been hauling massive amounts of
dirt out of Raleigh Valley night

shift, day shift, basically 24 -7, I
guess you would say.

They're down 90 feet and should hit pay
after removing the next 30 feet of mud.

By the end of this week, we might be
there.

All we've got to do is get Monster Red
running, and we can push that thing to

only 300 yards an hour. And we're going
to need that because this now is a ton

of dirt to wash.

We are going to turn that wash plant on,
and we are not going to cut it off

because we've got to get a lot of
materials polluted if we're going to hit

,000 ounces.

If this doesn't work out, I mean, we're
going to make nothing.

My guys, you know, they're going to lose
their bonus, and I'm going to be done

mining. That's how serious this is.

I'm into something that seems to have
awfully big rock in it.

It's not something that I was expecting,
not yet. I mean, this seems kind of

more like a boulder layer, like
something I would expect at the bottom.

Weird.

Yeah, guys, before I load any more of
this out, just chill out for a while.

Do we have time to mess around right
now?

I don't know what the hell this is.

It's worth looking at, though.

If I'm being honest, it looks like a
pale air to me. This is what we've been

looking for all season in the other
areas.

I mean, this looks like this was laid in
here by some kind of water event.

Generally, big boulders around here mean
pale air, I mean gold.

but it's definitely not where it's
supposed to be, not according to the

results and not according to all the
data I have.

We're working our way down, and now
we've got a mystery here.

But I can't ignore it.

I'm just going to have to test it off
the pan or something.

I mean, if there's gold in it, what am I
going to do with it? I don't have

Monster Red set up. I don't have...

Anything's set up, and I don't know how
much gold there is. Whatever.

I'm just going to test it. Then I'll
know.

This is classic Duncan Creek.

Constant curveballs.

This could be enough.

Yeah, this is actually like a really
heavy pan. It seems like there's going

be a lot of heavy minerals in here where
there's heavy black sand and magnetite

and hematite and stuff like that. It's
usually gold.

There's got to be 25, 30 colors in here.

That's probably the best pan I've ever
done in my life.

I was not expecting that. That's a lot
of gold in a pan, so that changes

everything.

Rick had hit pay dirt 30 feet earlier
than he expected.

We've got to run it and get the gold
out, but it's not that simple.

I mean, I don't have a wash plant
anywhere near here that's set up ready

It's not prepared for it.

I'm going to have to come up with some
kind of plan.

I need everybody to stop what they're
doing. Let's just meet up and have a

pow -wow.

Stopping in trucks for what?

Honestly, guys, I think we got down to
pay here. You notice those boulders

popping out, right?

So I took a pan out of there and...

Probably the best pan I've ever done
ever.

Oh, nice.

Yeah, like there was a ton of colors in
it.

I did not expect that. That changes
things.

Yeah, buddy, I like that a lot. Well, at
least we're going in the right

direction then.

It's tough, though. I don't always trust
pans. Yeah.

So to be fair, I want to pull 1 ,000
yards out of there and want to run it.

We're just going to run it through
Rocky.

Wash plant Monster Red is still in
pieces.

Rick must haul the pay dirt to his
smaller wash plant, Rocky.

at the other end of the claim.

That's really far up. Might as well run
to Milwaukee with it.

I took the side -by -side, and I set the
odometer, and if we went around, it's

actually just over 2 1⁄2 miles. Oh, wow.

But, but, we can just push across this
valley right here, and that's a mile.

So that's a big difference. Yeah.
There's a gap between that cut and the

Rockies. Yeah.

Cuts it way more than half.

To run the pay as fast as possible, Rick
plans to build a bridge across the

valley and a new road to haul painter a
mile south to wash plant Rocky.

How long do you think it will take to
build that? It's pretty deep. It is

deep, but we've got all that material
parked right there. If we just start by

pushing it with a dozer and filling the
rest with the trucks, we just all get

after it. I bet we can get it finished
this afternoon.

Let's get on with it. It's not going to
build itself.

Anyway, let's do it then.

I don't understand why it's here. We're
still

way too high up to be hitting the tail
air.

But this, we can't throw it away.

And we just have to work a little harder
and a little faster.

I'm not really impressed with what's
happening. We're only halfway on that 4

,500 -ounce goal.

Tony Beast is battling to hit his season
goal and keep his operation afloat.

This year I had $5 million in the hole,
and I'd sure like to hit that target to

come out even this year.

Two -thirds of the way through the
season, he has 2 ,500 ounces, just over

what he needs.

Right now we're battling the weather. If
the rain's here on the Paradise Hill,

it's very hard to move this pay.

Tony's loosing gold -rich pay from the
wall cut through his only running wash

plant, Mike's Trommel.

But heavy rain is flooding the cut and
soaking the pay.

If we can get it in the truck and we can
get it to the feeder, that's about it.

We are pretty much trying to move wet
cement around. That's how bad it gets

there.

It's hard to get in and out of the cuts
because it's so slippery.

It costs a lot of time, and so it costs
Tony a lot of money.

It's pissing rain again, so give it a
couple hours and everything will be a

-pole again.

That's what we've got to deal with. It
plumbs in for all. Take a little bit.

So all the water stays on one side.

And unless you drain most of the cuts,
we're going to pump all the water out.

And we've got to put a proper drain in
the cuts so we can actually get our pay

out of here.

We're dealing with this really stupid,
muddy stuff, which needs to be quite

carefully put through the plants.

The wet pay.

It's slowing down the plant.

Unfortunately, it has to run on a very
slow feed, which drives me crazy. I just

want to turn this thing up and swing
dirt into her.

And it also needs a little bit more time
to be washed in the trommel so that we

actually separate the gold from this
muddy clay material and it doesn't just

washed out right out the back end.

There better be some good gold in it.

Cody, we're going to have to cut out.

That kind of sucked.

Well, that worked absolutely like... I
tried to get one, but you can't keep up.

You can't. No, not with this. Okay.

Tony Beach mining operation has come to
a halt.

A buildup of wet pay in the hopper
feeder has forced them to shut down the

plant.

Now the stuff we're putting through is
real dewy and all the stuff was flopping

up over the back and piling up real
like, like this pile has got that high

about six hours.

So let's get some folks in here with
some shovels.

Hey, Tony, this stuff is really gooey.
We got a lot of overspill. I had to shut

it down.

There's no time for this.

When you get this piece back up and
running, fire it back up so we can run

Because it is nasty crap, okay?

Yeah. Oh, yeah, we don't really have
much other option other than jumping

You can get real fancy right here, but
you know what?

We can just stop.

Double it.

With all this dirt falling on the tail
pulley, it's going to get buried. That

applies weight and pressure, which will
slow the belt down, which will cause it

to pile up, which will cause us even
more shoveling.

So when the material drops onto the
conveyor belt, because this material is

wet and soupy, it's actually just
sliding right off the back of the

piling up on our tail pulleys. Come on.

Every minute that this plant's down,
we're losing like $25 a minute.

That is pretty good right there,
honestly.

Now we've got everything shut out.

Hopefully it doesn't pile up like that
again.

We got it.

Okay, now we put our chain across.

That feels good. All right, let's fire
up and we'll get you boys back on your

truck.

And go.

After three hours, Tony is back on the
gold.

On to the next couple holes.

The most important goal I have is to
give my team a future.

40 miles west of Dawson City at
California Creek, Fred Lewis is

turn his band of combat veterans into a
successful mining operation.

We've been supposed to in a few weeks,
but we're falling short.

In order to cover the cost for this
season, we need to get a minimum of 100

ounces. So far this season, Fred's
hauled in just 40 ounces.

We don't have a lot of time left in the
season.

We're going to have to figure something
out to up our efficiency and get to that

goal.

You know, we have a lot to do in a very
little bit of time, but, you know,

that's what we do. We made a living out
of doing the impossible.

It's a little bit of hard work, but
that's what I came here to do.

Fred has set down the wash plant to
inspect the gold -catching sluice runs.

I like the looks of it.

Looks like it's building up too much.

Only one way to know.

Right now I'm looking at my tailings
because the sluice just doesn't look

it's packing right.

I'm seeing gold in this sluice, which is
bad. If I'm seeing gold that's being

shot out into my tailings pond, that
means we're losing gold.

So we've either got to have to fix our
feed rate or do something about these

sluices.

It's too much.

That's not good.

We're losing balls.

Really?

It's not catching material the right
way. It goes from two feet to four feet.

Blam! There's a lot of force coming out
and distributed over a very short

distance. Right now, we need something
to take this material gradually. So I'm

feeling like...

a sluice ahead, feeding into these. Oh,
we need to add legs.

I want to talk to Buzz about it, see if
he feels the same way. Buzz!

Fred brings in Buzz Blago, an
experienced Yukon miner.

I don't know as much about welding as
you do, but do you think if we add six

feet onto this, you and JB could put
something together?

Prefab everything? Yeah. Get it all set
up?

Let's get things all cleaned up. Pull
these pieces off. That'll be a couple

hours, right?

I think that's what we have to do. I
love it.

With his four -foot sluices, Fred's
losing gold that's blowing out into

the tailings.

By adding a six -foot extension, the
extra riffles could catch all the gold

stop it being lost out the end of the
sluices.

It'll be a major game -changer.

for this entire season.

We'll be able to do more yardage, better
recovery.

Buzz brought in some sluice box pieces
down. We're going to modify them to go

into our current sluice boxes.

These are just pieces of it for now.

Buzz has them at his house.

He has everything known to mankind at
his house.

So we're going to cut that in half.

We're going to add 60 on each side.

Adding 36 square foot for the gold to
basically travel down and get separated

from the tailing. So that's just more
opportunity for it to get trapped and

as opposed to getting washed out.

It's time to unhook the old one and then
re -hook the new one.

Everything we're working on is heavy
and...

Not easy to move.

All right, Fred.

Yeah, we just got her finished up.

Man. So this is like an extra two that
should double our yardage.

More than doubling the length of the
sluice box should not only fix the gold

loss, but also allow them to run more
pay dirt.

So six feet added on to this could put
us close to 85 yards an hour.

I want to get this thing fired up and
tested.

Yeah, I like it.

Now it's going to come through here and
distribute.

The best part we know is the ripples are
working.

We want to see these ripples, a little
bit of bumps on them. We don't want to

see a flow across with no bumps. We see
bumps, we're seeing the right kind of

flow. Okay.

Yeah, it looks great.

Oh, I love it. It's feeding perfect
right down it.

All right, I'm going to start feeding.

I'm really excited that this is finally
coming together.

Those expenses on that should double the
amount of pay we can put through that

plant and stop losing gold. It's
something we absolutely had to do.

When it rains there, especially the way
it's been raining in some of these cuts,

the material gets so greasy that we're
pretty much out of luck.

Torrential rain has turned Tony Beatt's
wall cut into a quagmire.

Now Tony is digging a ditch to drain
excess water and dry out the wet pager.

Not much use if the material runs out of
the back of the truck.

We got to have material that's least you
can handle. You can't all tip to the

blue box.

So it's going to have to be half -past
dry in order for us to bring it to the

plant.

Anyway, I got that drained a bit. We
won't be in there for a week easy.

Got a half a million dollars down the
tooth this week.

Tony will have to wait a week for the
cut to dry out before he can run the pay

dirt.

And the stockpiled pay at the trommel
has now run out.

Yes, Kevin, this stuff is turning this

There's no use even trying to run it. So

Every hour the trommel is down costs
Tony $1 ,500 in lost gold production.

We're running out of time in the season
as is, and we don't have time to wait

for pay to dry.

We've got to do something.

But that's going to take a couple of
days to dry out.

At Paradise Hill, Tony Beats is battling
the floods.

Hey, Kevin, we have still a little piggy
bank sitting up high and dry.

Up on top of the hill there, there is a
whole slice. That means sitting there

now for a couple of years.

I know you remember it, but it was quite
a bit of pain. So let's at least bring

that to the box so we can get a little
bit of gold out while we're waiting.

That sounds like a plan.

For years.

The king of the Klondike has been
stashing away smaller pay piles for a

day.

Now, he wants to tap into one that sits
in between the wall and nugget cuts.

But there's no way to get to it.

Are we going to get in there? Do we have
to build a road or what?

Well, bring a D -11 in, whatever it
takes to get in there.

If we've got to bring in tailings, we
bring in tailings. If we bring a D -11,

bring a D -11.

Whatever it takes, let's get the...

We have pay just back here that we need
to get to. So we're building a road over

top of all this because with all the
weather we've been having, all the rain

stuff, it's been making everything just
slop.

To get to the stockpile of dry pay on
top of the hill, Tony must build a half

-mile haul road using mud capped with
coarse tailings to provide a solid way

in for his fleet of rock trucks.

I mean, just how it goes down there on
the hill over the range, it kind of...

We're building a bridge so we can get
that pain down to Rocky.

In Raleigh Valley, Rick and his crew
have paused stripping to build a short

to his wash plant, Rocky.

We're just about done here, so we should
be able to put it to the test.

But this is going to slow us to get down
to where we're actually trying to go.

To test run an unexpected layer of bonus
dirt.

I wasn't prepared for there to be a pay
layer in the middle of all this

tripping, but might as well lose it and
see what's there.

The whole idea with Rally Valley here is
to get Monster Red up and running by

the time that we reach the pay layer on
the bottom. But Monster Red's not ready,

and we are not at the bottom, but we are
already at a pay layer.

I panned it. It seems pretty good, but I
want to run a test on it on our little

plant.

If I could get 1 ,000 yards along the
mile track of that plant, and we run it,

they test it, I think that there might
be gold in this layer, but the only way

we're going to know is if we run it
through the plant and see what we got.

I'm going to finish this bridge, we're
going to haul it up, we're going to run

it, and hopefully we're going to find a
lot of gold.

I'm super excited to see what this holds
in store.

I never really expected it to be an
event, folks, and it's definitely got

moments. This is great.

No, I never ever once thought I'd ever

to tell me that it's worth running.

We should be looking at stretching the
ridge here.

We're loading the plan with the
excavator. The bucket on it's about a

dirt. He's dumping in it with every
bucket.

He's doing about 100 buckets an hour.

10 hours, we could have our 1 ,000 yards
run.

I'm nervous, honestly, because if this
works out, that's more of an opportunity

to get more gold this year.

But if it's not, then it's just a waste
of time, and time's not on our side

right now.

10 hours and 1 ,000 yards of dirt later.

Man, it's tough to say. I hate guessing.

You know, there's chunky gold in there.
There's fine gold.

There's gold in it, so it was the right
decision to run this.

know what? If the gold is good, I'm

to want to run it.

But I don't have Monster Red set up.

At Duncan Creek, it's time to see if
Rick's decision to halt tripping and run

1 ,000 -yard test has paid off.

Looked pretty close to what we've been

To be worth running, the test must
deliver at least 10 ounces.

That's shy of an ounce and a half per
100 yards. I mean, that's just as good

anything we've run this year.

Yeah, it's better than it should have
been and what was supposed to be

overburdened.

So what are you going to do?

I don't know what I'm going to do.

But I don't see, I don't know how we're
going to run it. I don't know how we're

going to run it at all.

Well, I've had worse problems. I mean, I
am holding a pan of gold.

But at the same time, you know, this
ground's good, but I know what we're

for at the bottom is better.

You know, probably twice as good.

If Rick decides to run this good pay
dirt now, without Monster Red, he risks

running out of time to reach the super
-rich pay layer at the bottom of Rally

Valley.

So... I can't throw us away.

I'm not set up to run it. I don't have
the time to run it. I don't have the

people to run it. I don't have
everything.

I got a lot to figure out right now.

Right now the pressure is on. We're
firing on all cylinders.

We need 100 ounces.

At California Creek.

Fred's digging pay dirt in the far end
of the cut. The better we get at this

equipment, the faster we're able to
move, the faster we're able to put pay

into the plant, the more gold we're
going to go home with. So, efficiency,

efficiency, efficiency.

Longer sluices on his wash plant mean
he's supercharged his operation to run

yards an hour.

It's all about being successful and
about being efficient.

Right now, the name of the game is get
all the pay.

Scout sniper Stuart feeds the hopper. I
do think the military, what it provided

for us, was the means to not quit.

I definitely miss home. I miss my family
immensely.

But right now, this is where I need to
lead to secure our future.

And Green Beret Rick is on double duty
clearing tailings.

Yeah, I'm jumping from the rock truck to
V -O and doing a self -load.

And then turn around and drive the truck
back up, dump it, come back down.

That plant can take a lot of pay.

And we have been busting our ass to stay
up with it.

I'm jumping out now and getting in the
truck and head back around.

If we ever did make it rich off gold
mining, then we definitely put our dues

This season...

Has been one of the most mentally tough
things I've had to do in a very, very

long time.

I got a problem with the plant.

Oh. Run, old man, run.

Boy, I can see it from here.

Haley, this got built up too far.

Caused the extra weight in the flutes
run.

and caused it to collapse.

I was feeding. I thought that everything
was, like, on point.

I had no idea that that was like that.

The new sluices are putting more
material into the pond now, and just add

I couldn't get it out of there fast
enough, and it was nothing but just

to sustain with me driving the rock
truck also.

Running twice the pay dirt has doubled
the material flowing through the sluice

runs. causing the fine tailings to
quickly back up and break the box off

plant.

After it fell, water kept flowing, and
any gold just right out the chute it

goes. Yesterday, all along that ridge
right here where this gap is now before

fell, there was just a line of gold in
there. Yeah, it was beautiful.

We could have easily lost four or five
ounces.

we can get down in there and recover.

I know I'm not 100 % lost, but, yeah, a
good percentage is gone.

If Fred came down here and saw this, he
would be pissed.

Tensions are high right now. It just
sucks to be out here, to have, you know,

the final stretch of the season, and
then something like this happen.

I don't know. Had I seen it, I
definitely would have adjusted.

I'm going to try to get a hold of Fred
to let him know what's going on.

Something happened down at the mine
site.

Rick and Stuart were eating the plant,
and the sluice box basically just fell

down.

The person who was on tailings wasn't
cleaning up, and the person who was

didn't know that there wasn't someone
down there cleaning up, so the small

tailings, they were backing up into the
sluice boxes, and there was just so much

weight on the sluice box.

that the loose box fell down.

So you're telling me the wash plant's
currently not in operation?

Yeah, we did lose a bunch of gold.

I don't have time to be over there right
now. I'm pulling pay.

Freaking Bush Lake. Make sure they clean
up everything that was spilt.

Repurpose it, put it back in the pile,
and fix everything they broke.

You know, I totally get it. These guys
are tired.

Mistakes will happen, but...

That sluice box breaking was a major
malfunction in communication on our

have a lot of standards for my misfits.

We need to be better than that. That one
mistake cost us $10 ,000. Easy.

I'll take full responsibility for this.
I'm the most senior person on the crew

with the most experience as I was
working, so it's kind of on me.

And this was a big deal, you know what I
mean? Like, you know, in other

operations that they're pulling 100, 200
ounces, you know, a clean out, this

would just be, you know, pennies to
them. But to us, it's not.

JB and Buzz re -hang the boot box.

Oh, yeah, that looks good.

And Rick and Stuart scoop up the
tailings, which are now full of the gold

lost.

We're pulling the fine tailings from the
tailings pond and recovering them, and

we'll run them back through later on.

I've got to let my guys fix their own
mistakes.

I'm not here to micromanage. I'm not
here to baby anyone.

I'm here to make miners out of these
guys, and when you make a mistake,

got to fix it yourself.

Four hours later, they're ready to fire
up the wash plant again.

I hope this is a lesson to understand
how much we have to pay attention to.
