Once a month,
we have a late start at school

I used to need PawPaw's
help to saddle up Shadrach,

but I can do it myself now.

PawPaw says horses
forgive, but don't forget.

And they especially
remember bad stuff.

So it's really important
to make putting on his saddle
a good experience.

After he's been groomed,
I start with his saddle pad.

It needs to cover
the horse's withers.

That's the name for the ridge
between the shoulder blades.

Before I put on the saddle,
the right stirrup

goes over the horn.

The girth, which the name
for the big strap,

then folds over.

PawPaw says to always
stand on the left side

and then gently lower it
onto his back.

The thing weighs
about 30 pounds.
