What's Big Wave Day?

It's the one day each year when Motopolis Bay

gets the largest waves.

And, this year, our girl Kailani

is gonna surf them.

I know, right? She's been practicing a ton.

She even built this.

Whoa! It has rockets on the side,

a built-in tool compartment,

and check this out, Piston, foot straps for safety.

It's beautiful.

Where are Kailani and Drift anyway?

Drift took Kailani to the doctor.

But they should be back right about... now.

[glumly] Hey, everyone.

What happened to your arm?

I fell this morning and hurt it.

So the doctor put it in a cast until it heals.

What about Big Wave Day?

Will your cast be off by then?

Affirmative.

The cast comes off in a few weeks,

just before Big Wave Day.

That's okay, right?

It's not like you need your arms to surf.

Actually, you need your arms to paddle out to the waves

and push off your board when it's time to stand up.

I'll loan you my surfing manual

if you want to learn more about it.

But I don't think my arm will be strong enough

to do any of that in time for Big Wave Day.

[sighs] Honestly, I don't know if I'll ever be able to surf again.

Your arm won't be hurt forever.

You just need time to rest and heal.

And then you'll rock Big Wave Day.

But I need to practice in order to ride those big waves,

and the doctor said I can't get my cast wet.

Well, if you can't practice on water, why not practice on land?

How do you surf on land?

I'm glad you asked. Come with us.

I call it the J-Surf...

Built to twist and turn just like a wave.

So you can practice surfing without getting wet.

Whoa, hang on a second.

I don't know what the proper amount of padding is for an injured surfer,

but you can never have too much.

Even with the cast on, it looks like you've totally got this.

Like I'm usually surfing through lots of wind.

Hmm. Come on P, let's go back to HQ

and figure out a way to get Kailani some wind.

Okay. I redesigned the J-Surf

-so it still goes side to side... -[tablet beeping]

...but it can go up and down too.

And now we have wind!

You know, these past couple of weeks have been great.

I feel a lot better about Big Wave Day.

And my cast comes off tomorrow

so we can start practicing in the ocean.

She should be back any second now.

Ooh wait! So does that mean you can start practicing in the water?

Whoops! It slipped.

[Kailani] Whoa!

Ugh! Why is my arm so weak?

Well, you haven't been using it.

You were letting it rest and heal.

But if my arm's not strong, I can't surf.

And all that practicing was for nothing.

I remember when I hurt my ankle,

I thought I'd never be able to do flips again.

Then after a while, I got better.

Now it's like I was never hurt.

Big Wave Day is only two days away.

It's not enough time.

You've been surfing ever since you were a little keiki.

Once you're back in the water, you'll know what to do.

I'm sure of it.

So what do you say you climb back on that board

and hit the waves?

[Drift] This is a standard drill.

I'll hold you in place while you paddle

for as long and hard as you can.

Flash, you don't need to make water sounds

if we're already in the ocean.

Remember, paddle fast when you're ready,

It's okay. You just got to keep practicing.

Big Wave Day is tomorrow

and my arm is still too weak.

For now. But with a little more practice,

you'll get stronger.

[Lee] I think something's wrong with Keanu.

Hey, everyone, I got hit by that gnarly wave

and my engine stalled.

I need someone to tow me in.

Kailani, Keanu is in trouble.

I see him.

And there's another wave coming right towards him.

[Flash] How do we get to him in time?

I can put my rockets on him and send him out to you.

Hold on.

Roger that. We'll be ready for him.

Don't worry, Mr. Waves.

These rockets will get you over to my friends.

And they'll fix you up meka wikiwiki loa.

But don't you need these rockets?

It's more important that you're safe.

He's coming your way, Buds.

He can't control the rockets.

He'll need help getting to Marin.

[Flash] You were so cool, Kailani.

The wave was like... [grunts]

And you were like, "Nuh-uh,"

and then you stood up just in time,

and we were like, "Whoa!"

My arm did get better.

I told you. It just takes a little time.

I was thinking maybe you could teach me

Hi, Daisy. What can we do for you?

Oh, Duncan is stuck at the bottom of the ocean,

and his engine is broken.

He sank to the bottom of the ocean?

Well, he is a submarine.

He can go underwater.

Phew!

But something went wrong and he can't come back up.

We'll get him out of trouble. Where is he?

I'm not sure.

Maybe you can call him on the radio and ask?

Ah! Good idea! Duncan.

Duncan, can you hear me?

Loud and clear, Daisy.

I'm with the Firebuds and Aquabuds.

They're gonna help you.

-Can you give- -[Duncan] Oh! A rescue mission!

This is just like my favorite movie,

The Fantastic Adventures of Ricky the Rescue Robot,

Part Six, Sunken Sub Shenanigans.

Duncan, where are you?

You know, I'm not sure exactly.

Before going underwater,

I passed by a red buoy with a white stripe.

It looked just like the buoy in my other favorite movie,

Kevin Klutzington and the Kooky Coast Guard Kid.

How many favorite movies does he have?

[sighs] Too many.

Wait. The buoy was red and white?

I think he's talking about the weather buoy

that lets us know if storms are coming.

Claro que si! I know where that is.

Great. Sit tight, Duncan.

We'll be there as soon as we can.

We've done tons of search and rescues.

We should come up with a plan.

We've also done tons of search and rescues.

Having a plan is good, but it's more important

to move out right away.

Then problem-solve as you go.

But if you know what you're doing beforehand,

you won't have problems to solve.

Unless you take too long thinking of a plan

and don't get there in time.

Uh, we should probably head out.

Yeah, come quick.

I want to tell you about my new movie idea.

I call it Submarine Rescue.

-You'll never guess what it's- -[static]

[gasps] Duncan's radio cut out.

We gotta go find him.

And I'll think up a plan on the way.

[Cruz] There's the weather buoy.

Then Duncan must be down there somewhere.

I'll go inside Marin's Aqualab

and guide the rescue mission from there.

[alarm blaring]

The weather buoy just put out a warning

that a big storm is moving in.

So we need to save Duncan before it gets here.

Okay, here's my plan.

Jayden, activate your J-Nar.

We'll use the soundwaves to map the ocean floor

and see if we can find Duncan.

The J-Nar is J-Narring.

[beeping]

I see some rocks, a trench...

-[rapid beeping] -Hold up!

The J-Nar is detecting something big.

In that area there.

-It must be Duncan. -[tablet beeps]

What happened?

[beeping]

Aw, man! A school of fish swam by

and messed up the signal.

Okay, new plan.

We know Duncan is close,

so I'll split the area into sections

for each of us to search.

Sounds good. Here you go.

[Ripley] There's no time for that.

Cruz, you, Lee and Kailani dive down and start looking

for anything that could lead us to Duncan.

I think we need a plan first.

There's no time.

Go, go, go!

Okay.

Ripley, I turned on my camera so you can see what we see.

Oh! You can watch everything they're doing in here.

Hey, check out this groove.

It looks like something was dragged along the ocean floor.

Like a submarine rudder.

[Ripley] Follow that groove.

It could lead to Duncan.

Heads up.

The approaching storm is stirring up the ocean currents.

It's about to get rough down there.

[all] Whoa!

Everyone okay?

We're fine, but the sand covered up the groove.

We don't know which direction to go.

Stand by.

Firebuds, can you search the area with us?

You bet. I'm almost done with my plan.

But the storm's gonna hit any minute.

-My team needs you now. -And so does Duncan.

I hear you. We'll be right there.

[Bo] Find any more clues?

Not yet.

Then why don't we split up so we can cover more ground?

Works for me.

[Duncan] ...and the lost submarine also has a pet dolphin

-and a best friend who's a mermaid- -Duncan!

Are you guys the Firebuds?

Oh, I'm so glad you found me!

What did you think of my movie idea?

Uh, you realize your radio went out a while ago, right?

I do now.

We found Duncan, everyone.

-Buds, look! -Oh, my hoodness!

He could fall into that trench any second.

What do we do?

I'll start working on a plan to get Duncan up to the surface.

We got this far without a plan,

and the storm's almost here.

We have to take action.

But that trench is deep.

If we're not careful-

Lee, Kailani, Cruz, quick, swim into that trench,

and see if you can push Duncan up from below.

Once he's floating, maybe we can figure out

how to pull him to the surface.

We're on it.

[Ripley] And please hurry.

We're going as fast as we can.

[grunts] Whoa!

Uh-oh!

Whoa! Whoa!

Duncan, are you okay?

I'm fine, but I'm not sure

how I'm going to make it out of this trench.

Oh, well. Maybe I'll just live here. [chuckles]

-[alarm blaring] -[gasps]

Not only is the storm closing in,

but there's a waterspout forming.

[Flash] What's a waterspout?

It's a tornado over water.

Bring Duncan up now.

Ripley, we need a plan.

Yeah. Rushing into this rescue without one

is the reason Duncan's stuck in the trench.

You're right. We tried it my way.

We should try it your way, Bo.

We need to find something that can help us lift Duncan.

I know. The J-Rafts!

When the pucks inflate, the rafts will rise to the surface.

So if we tie them to Duncan, they'll pull him up.

Great idea.

We just need to figure out how to tie them to Duncan.

Oh, we'll use the J-Net.

Wham bam perfect plan!

-My J-Net is set. -We'll move it into place.

[laughing] That tickles.

Ready when you are, Bo.

Inflate the J-Rafts.

I'm rising up,

just like in my third favorite movie,

I am sinking

just like my my least favorite movie,

The Super-Sad Sinking of Billy Bouncy, the Hot Air Balloon.

-What do we do, Bo? -Make a new plan.

We can bring the J-Raft up to the surface,

patch the hole and try again.

No-go.

The waterspout is gonna hit any minute.

We don't have time for a new plan.

Okay. Ripley, you're good at coming up with ideas fast.

All of you swim underneath Duncan

and use your aquajets to push him.

That, plus the J-Rafts might be enough to bring him up.

[gasps] The waterspout's coming.

We have to go.

Kailani, hook up Drift's tow cable

so we can haul Duncan out of here.

You know, Ripley, I thought you always had to take time

to plan out your rescues.

Then you came up with that aquajet idea like that.

And it worked great.

But it was your smart plan

that got him out of the trench to begin with.

I learned a lot from you today, Ripley.

Man, that was some rescue.

Sure was.

I guess we should head home now.

-[siren blaring] -Is that our parents?

There's a five alarm fire in Motopolis
