tillering

that's what some say is the difference

in a woodworker and in a Bowyer

it's either what makes or breaks a bow

literally the tillers the difference in

a good smooshing bow in a bow that

vibrates tillering has been one of the

most difficult and is the most difficult

part of building a bow it's the time

when you feel the most impatient but you

need to be the most patient so the time

we're all Bowyer's mess up we're all

Bowyer's break a bow but there is one

single tool that has changed tillering

forever entering the tillering gizmo the

items needed to make this tailoring

gizmo are fairly simple the first thing

is a 5/16 nut a pencil in a scrap piece

of wood

I've made some out of a pine 2x4 but you

know me I don't like to stop with

something like that so I'm gonna make

mine look a little better the wooden

block is gonna be 6 inches long one and

a half inches wide and one and a half

inches tall first mark the center of

your block then measure 3/4 of an inch

on either side draw a lines connect

those lines directly to the corners

these two corners are gonna cut off

you'll see why here

and then sand it smooth this is what

we've got here now you're going to want

to find the center now drill a hole with

a half inch bit that's deep enough for

the nut to fit all the way into the wood

next change the bed out to a 5/16 drill

bit drill this next hole right in the

center of the hole you already drilled

and this one's going all the way through

the piece of wood

next it's time to clean this up with

sanding the next thing to do is to

lightly hammer this nut right into the

hole the hole is gonna be smaller than

the nut so you want to lay it flat and

with some smooth blows it should go

right in once it started like that you

can finish the job depending on how deep

your hole is you can grab a dowel rod

and Hammer your nut and further I like

to just make mine flush and I call that

good at this point if you're gonna apply

a finish you can do it now I'm gonna use

true oil

now it's time to sharpen the pencil

next clamp your pencil and device threat

the pencil onto the gizmo

thank you for joining me here's an old

tillering gizmo and another old one and

this is the one we built today it's

absolutely awesome but that's not it I

need to show you how to use it if you

don't know how to use this properly it's

really easy to break a bow the main goal

of the tillering gizmo is to show you

where you need to remove more what off

the bow how you achieve that is by

rubbing it like so on the belly of the

bow and wherever it's bending the least

amount the pencil that's protruding will

actually touch the bow and leave pencil

marks showing you where you need to take

wood off the bow when I have the bow up

here I can do the exact same thing as

well I can draw the bow down to my

desired length and I can stand up close

to it also since I have the pulley down

low I can just pull it up so I can draw

it to my desired link grab the gizmo rub

it along the belly and that's gonna tell

me where I need to remove what

personally after I get my pencil marks I

take 10 to 15 scrapes of wood off and

then re exorcise the limbs and redo it

again but this works best with the long

bow if you have a reflux D flex bow or a

recurve bow you may be in for a little

bit of trouble for example let's throw

this bow that we made the other day and

put duct tape on and you can see I've

got reflex limb tips so to compensate

for this all you have to do is when you

draw it down and use the tillering gizmo

you go and then you stop where the limb

starts to reflect because if you just go

over the reflex it's gonna have you take

out that complete reflex leaving you

with no wood left there and that's not

what you want to do so the first may be

20 inches here I'm going to use the

tillering gizmo and the last 10 inches

I'm gonna eyeball that in order to get

the perfect killer on a reflex bow the

same thing for a recurve bow and the

same thing we're for reflex D flex bow

you can definitely use the tillering

gizmo on all of those you just want to

stop where you have put in maybe flip

tips or recurve tips so that you don't

take too much wood off in the wrong

place I'm gonna stop there on the

explanation because I'm gonna do a whole

nother tillering video that's gonna

probably be lengthy and very very

in-depth for all of you who are learning
