He was very friendly.
Everybody loved him.

He did not have one enemy.

She sees two men pointing guns
at her.

He was declared dead at the scene.

He did have a criminal
record. Domestic violence related.

He laid hands on her, choked her,
pointed a gun at her head.

We're trying to get away
from this man, not antagonise him.

She was afraid that
he was gonna take her out

as the only witness to this murder.

It was the worst day of my life.

She opened the door to

two of the worst people that she
could have ever opened the door to.

South Bend is almost in the middle
of the state of Indiana.

The South Bend
originally founded its name

through the southernmost bend
in the St Joseph River.

I think the heart and soul
of South Bend

is based off
of the University of Notre Dame

cos it is such a staple in the area

and it brings a lot
of infrastructure to South Bend.

It's Christmas Eve 2015
in South Bend, Indiana.

It's a relatively quiet day.

Nothing really going on.

It was 43 degrees.

Hadn't had much snow.
Decorations are up.

Everybody's getting ready.

Typically around the holidays,

there's not as much crime
or activities

cos most people
are with their loved ones.

Cleeve Chick
and his girlfriend were

at Miami Hills third floor apartment

visiting with family for Christmas.

Christmas is very important
to me and my family.

We celebrate it, we love it.

It's a time that we enjoy
being around each other.

It's Meaghan and my son
Dominic's apartment.

Me and Cleeve were staying there.

My daughter, Angelica, and her
children were sitting on the couch.

We laugh and we giggle all the time.

We're really, really close family.

At 12:30pm,
there's a knock at the door.

Meaghan Lloyd opens the door
without checking the peephole first.

And upon opening the door,
she sees two men in the stairwell

pointing guns at her.

Seconds later shots ring out.

I was at home

when I received a phone call
saying I needed to come in.

We heard the dispatch
of somebody shot in Miami Hills.

We were close by,
so we responded to that.

We went up stairs

not really knowing
where the threat was.

We're taking it pretty cautiously.

As we're going up the stairs,

you could smell a very distinct
burnt gunpowder smell.

Once we get up to the third floor,

we see casings
and bullet holes in the door.

The first officer makes contact,
knocks on the door,

announces the police department.

When they said,
"It's the police",

I had to literally move his body
out from front of the door

cos they couldn't get in.

Clay Shaefer is
the first one that opens the door

and tells us that his cousin,
Cleeve Chick, was shot.

You could hear people screaming
from the inside.

I'm down there
holding the towels

on his head
until the paramedic got there.

I didn't... I wasn't gonna let go.

I wasn't.

Cos he didn't deserve that.

I really thought when they came in,

I thought he was gonna make it.
I really did.

They told us all to leave
the apartment, go outside.

We were still in our pyjamas.

We were crying. We were...
It was just horrible.

Cleeve Chick was very friendly,
very funny, liked to dance,

had very good sense of humour,
and everybody loved him.

Everybody loved him.
He did not have one enemy.

Cleeve had one daughter
that was six years old.

He tried to be a good dad
all the time.

I didn't like him at first.

I said he's too outspoken, he's
too goofy. Liked to jump around.

And I'm like,
"No, just stay away from me."

And then he grew on me
and we started dating.

We were talking
about getting engaged

and we hadn't made our mind up.

We went back and forth
and then finally he bought me a ring

and we were gonna get married.

He was just a good man
all the way around.

The victim was slumped over,
his back was still against the door.

He had one gunshot wound
to the right shoulder

and one gunshot wound
to the back of the head.

By the time paramedics arrived
on scene,

Cleeve was declared dead at scene.

My dad actually called me and told
me my boyfriend had passed away,

and I just broke down.

But I knew in my heart
that he was gone before I left,

but I didn't want to hear it.

I wasn't ready.

We had four shell casings
in the hallway.

The door itself was hit
with four bullet holes.

Two were high, one was medium,
and one was low.

The two bullets - I believe -
that were fired low,

the medium and the low one, were the
ones that actually struck Cleeve.

The two high ones travelled
further into the apartment

and went down into the far closet.

We knew that there were
two guns involved.

We can tell that the weapons used
were semi-automatic pistols,

but no guns, no weapons
were found in the apartment.

This was a very lacking
of evidence kind of case.

While I was interviewing
Christy, she was very upset.

Clearly she had been crying.
It was a very emotional,

bad, bad day for her.

12:30 that day,
there was a knock at the door.

We thought it was our next door
neighbour,

which is a good family friend
of all of ours,

which is Cleeve's best friend.

Me and Meaghan were going
to the door

to see who was gonna answer it.

Meaghan is only 4'4", maybe.

She's real short. We had a peephole
she couldn't see through it.

Angelica and her children
were sitting on the couch,

and Cleeve was sitting
behind the door.

Meaghan opened the door,
and when she opened the door,

we seen two guns pointing at us.

We both at the same time said,
"They have guns!"

And I tell all the girls,
"Go! Go! Go!"

Angelica grabs her children
in the car seats,

she lays down on the floor
in the living room,

and Meaghan takes off
down the hallway

to the back bedroom.

Her child, which was just a newborn,
was in the back area.

Cleeve jumped up out of the chair

and he pushed his hand
against the door

trying to close the door

while two people were pushing
on the other side.

And he finally got it shut
and he locked it with the deadbolt.

And then all of a sudden,
all I hear is gunfire.

He slid down the door
and I'm right there with him.

I didn't know if they were gonna
kick the door in.

I was talking to him, telling him,
"I'm here.

I'm not going nowhere.
I'm staying here with you.

You'll make it. Don't leave me."

And he wasn't responding.

Cleeve's actions
were definitely heroic,

and I think he saved
the people inside the apartment

from also being shot.

A good man lost his life
saving our lives.

It was the worst day of my life.

Worst.

Christy was able to see
the two men at the door.

She positively identified one
as being Tyshawn Williams.

She did see the face
of the second man,

but she did not know who he was.

Christy Harper knew
who Tyshawn Williams was

because he had been in a
four-year-long relationship with her

daughter Angelica Jones, and he
was the father of her two children.

Tyshawn did have a criminal record.

Most of it was
domestic violence related.

Tyshawn is very violent
and he's just unstable.

There's something wrong.
He needs help.

So, next,
Meaghan Lloyd was interviewed.

So, we prepared a photo lineup
and showed them to her,

and she was able to positively
identify Tyshawn Williams

as being one of the men
at the door with a gun.

We didn't have a name or face
for the second gunman at that point.

Meaghan was able to describe the
second gun as being a male, black.

That was the extent of it.

I want justice for all victims.

It was a tragedy
that happened to Cleeve,

happened to the other individuals
that were there at the home.

They had to see and witness
all these horrible things happening.

I wanted to do right by them
and find the men who did this.

We didn't know where they were.

We were really scared.

We were so scared, we went
to family members, friend's house.

Every few hours we would move
around because we were scared.

We're hoping to figure out
where we may find Tyshawn

and potentially who the second
shooter would've been.

Angelica sits down
for the interview.

She's holding one of her children
at the time.

She's very upset.

It's not a good day for her as well.

Angelica's version
of events mirrored

pretty much everyone else's.

She was present
when the shooting took place.

She saw Tyshawn Williams
at the doorway.

So, she knows what happened
and who did it.

And she also sees the hand

and gun of the second person,

but she does not see a face.

She did not know
who the second person was.

But Angelica Jones
and Tyshawn Williams had been

in a four-year-long
romantic relationship.

They had actually lived together
at Tyshawn Williams's house

with his mother.

She's the mother
of Tyshawn's two children,

a three-month-old
and a one-year-old.

Angelica and Tyshawn's relationship
was tumultuous,

filled with domestic-violence
related incidents,

often gone unreported.

Angelica left Tyshawn because
he had become violent with her.

He laid hands on her, choked her,
pointed a gun at her head,

and made threats that "I will kill
you if you ever leave me."

The very next day
after that happened,

she takes the kids and goes off.

She went to the YWCA
for protection

because he was threatening her,
and she went there to live.

The night before the shooting,

Angelica had posted a picture
on social media

of her snuggled up
on a sofa with another man.

That man was Clay Shaefer,
who is Meaghan Lloyd's brother.

Angelica and Clay had relations
back in the past.

Angelica said that Tyshawn
Williams had been calling

and texting her and sending her
social media posts all night long,

threatening her, and wanting to see
the children and see her.

They were trying to get him
to stop calling the phone,

and they trying to tell him, "Look,

she's moved on,
stop texting, leave her alone."

I believe Tyshawn had seen
the picture on social media

and it infuriated him.

Clay was definitely in shock

when he came into the interview.

Clay was in a neighbouring
apartment building,

smoking weed
with another female friend

at the time
that the shooting occurred.

When Clay heard shots fired
in the apartment complex...

...and looked out the window,
he'd seen two men

jumping into a green Bonneville

SS that he described
as having a sagging rear bumper.

I think he described one of the men

as having a red sweatshirt
in the backseat,

and identified a third person

because one of the two men got
in the front passenger's seat

and the other one got
in the rear seat.

And it sped away
from the apartment complex.

Clay doesn't know
who the third person is.

Then he described
going up the stairs,

seeing bullet holes in the door.

Clay describes the scene inside
as people crying, chaos,

not really understanding
what's going on.

We learned from Clay Shaefer
that he had recently moved back

from Indianapolis to South Bend

and was currently staying
at his sister's apartment.

He knew Tyshawn was very jealous

and thought Angelica and Clay
had something going on.

Clay Shaefer received a Facebook
friend request from Tyshawn

and asked Angelica
why her baby daddy

was sending him a friend request.

After Clay Shaefer accepted the
friend request, the hostility began.

Tyshawn would post publicly
to, what they call, throw the ones,

which is fight fist to fist.

But privately Tyshawn was sending
Clay text messages

talking about
how he was going to shoot him,

how he was gonna kill him
and his child.

I don't think Clay wanted to fight
with Tyshawn, but then again,

he posted that picture
with him and Angelica.

I did not know.

I would've made sure
we would've took

whatever picture was posted down.

I would have made my daughter
delete her Facebook.

We're trying to get away
from this man, not antagonise him.

But Tyshawn is very mad
at this point. He's extremely angry.

He sends a picture of himself
holding a gun pointed at the camera

to Clay and Angelica.

Clay talked to Angelica about it.

Angelica told Clay
how crazy Tyshawn was

and the volatile relationship
that they had.

And I don't think Clay
took them seriously.

From the witnesses,
we knew that

Dominic Paterson
had not been at the scene,

but they told us where he was.

He was selling plasma.

So we sent officers to pick him up

and bring him to the Metro Homicide
Unit for an interview.

Dominic was the son
of Christy Harper

and the brother of Angelica Jones.

Dominic didn't know
about the shooting.

He was actually shocked
and surprised.

Didn't know what was going on.

Dominic was aware of the threats
that were being made to Angelica

from Tyshawn because she had shown
him the threats on her phone.

Nobody at the apartment thought
that he knew where she was at.

The apartment was
a secret to Tyshawn.

He didn't know where it was,
or so they thought.

With search warrant in hand, we go
to the house of Tyshawn's mother.

We knock on the door.

Initially nobody's home, but Mom
shows up shortly thereafter.

Show her the search warrant,
tell her why we're there,

what we're doing,

and she begrudgingly lets us
into the house.

We looked throughout the house,

found several cartridges,

ammo boxes,

spent shell casing.

The spent shell casing
from the basement

of Tyshawn's mother's house

was a ballistic match
to the two of the four shell casings

that were found in the hallway
outside the murder scene.

We identified the cabinets
in the basement

to be similar to the photo that
Tyshawn had sent Clay

with Tyshawn pointing a gun
at the camera.

I told his mother that
I really wanted to talk to Tyshawn.

She didn't know where he was.

And Tyshawn had been
in the habit of using

burner phones or spoof numbers,

so he never really used
the same phone number twice.

Spoof numbers are an application
that you can pay for

and it masks your phone number
to be something else.

Well, at this point, we have two
armed gunmen out on the streets

of the city of South Bend,
and we don't know where they are.

It becomes extremely frustrating

not knowing where the killer is,

because then he becomes a threat
to everybody else around him.

In these types of circumstances

where you have a suspect
known to be violent,

who's a known felon, you're not only
conducting your investigation,

but you have to think
about officer safety.

So, it's a combination
of investigative

and sort of tactical considerations

that need to be
constantly evaluated.

Christy Harper calls
and says she has more information

about who she thinks
the second shooter is.

I'm hoping that this information
that she's coming with

is going to be the linchpin that
brings us who the second suspect is.

Christy had told me that
she had heard on the streets

that possibly the second party with
Tyshawn had been Levon Ellison.

I did reach out to them
trying to get them to see

if that was one of the people
that was involved in the shooting.

Christy Harper and Meaghan
Lloyd come in for a second interview

on December 28th, 2015.

At the time, Levon did not have
any criminal history to speak of.

It was actually very hard to try
and find a photograph of him.

I had to dig all the way down
into his driver's licence.

We showed them photo lineups
of Levon Ellison

in the hopes that they could
identify him as the second shooter.

Both ladies looked at the photo
lineups, did their due diligence,

but neither one of them
could make a positive ID.

We tracked down
Levon Ellison's parents,

spoke with them, and they claimed
not to know where his son was.

It was suspicious
that Levon wasn't around

and couldn't be talked to.

But suspicion is not
the same thing as proof.

I'm splitting my attentions between
several things at this point.

I'm working on trying to find
Tyshawn Williams,

still trying to find
associates of his,

and trying to find other associates
of Levon Ellison.

The Department
of Children's Services did reach out

to the Metro Homicide Unit
and told us that

Angelica Jones was secretly
communicating with Tyshawn Williams

via several social media apps.

They knew this only because
Angelica Jones had been staying

at the local YWCA
after the shooting.

She needed a safe place to go
with her children.

They don't want Tyshawn Williams
showing up at their door as well.

So, they're trying to give us
information to find him

and get him in custody.

We arranged with YWCA
to pick up Angelica Jones

and bring her back
to the Metro Homicide...

and just have a conversation
with her about what's going on.

She finally admitted that
she had been in communications

with Tyshawn via spoof numbers.

And in doing so,
he had explained to her

his version of events
of what happened that day.

His explanation was he had received
an invite from a friend of his

to go to the apartment
to commit a robbery.

Tyshawn was trying to spin
this fantastical story

about how it was
a total random occurrence

that he wound up
at the same door where she was.

Tyshawn told Angelica that

the other suspect is the one
who fired all the gunshots.

The physical evidence
that the Metro Homicide Unit has

can prove that what Tyshawn
is telling her is inaccurate.

We've already identified
that there were

two guns that were fired
at the scene.

On January 20th, 2016,
we get a bunch of tips

saying that Tyshawn Williams is

hiding out in
the Cobus Green Trailer Park,

which is just over the border
into Elkhart County.

We send the US Marshals out,

we send the Elkhart County deputies
out to the trailer park.

All they have is a general location.

They just have the park.

They don't know which trailer it is,

they don't know which street
it's on.

They don't have anything.
They're just driving around randomly

in the trailer park
and hoping to find something.

And that didn't come to anything.

I posted on my social media

what I was going through
with Cleeve,

and a girl reached out to me

and she said
that she was on a dating site,

that Tyshawn was reaching
out to her,

and trying to meet up with her.

I reached out to Detective Wiley
and had him check into it.

Somebody was actually
communicating with Tyshawn via

a romantic social media app,
I'll say.

So, that person knows
where he's at in the trailer park -

which street it's on. They just
don't know which trailer it is.

So, that person is calling
Crime Stoppers

and the next day the tips just
keep coming in, keep coming in.

It is essential that every
one of these tips be followed up,

even if it seems to be
bunk on the surface.

I mean, there are countless cases
throughout history

where the case goes cold
and when it's solved years later,

we see that, in fact, there was
one tip never followed up on.

Those lessons have been learned

to the extent that now every tip
and every case is followed through.

My partner and I end up going
out to the trailer park ourselves.

We go out, we start checking
the empty trailers.

Maybe he's squatting one of these
empty trailers within the park.

That came up with nothing.

We're about to leave
and we're randomly driving down

one of the streets in the trailer
park, and I happen to look up

to my right, and I see
Tyshawn Williams in a window.

We go up to the door of the trailer,
knock on the door.

Young lady answers the door
and I say who I am...

...and "I'm looking
for Tyshawn Williams.

I just saw him in your window.
Where is he?"

And she denies, denies, denies.

Say, "No, he is not here,
he's not here, he's not here."

When we asked
for permission to come in

just to look around,
she denied our entry.

I legitimise in my own mind

that I wanted to see him so bad
that I saw him.

So, I had that moment of doubt.

So, we leave the trailer park
and we go back to the office.

And I get a call from a tipster.

He says, "I know where
Tyshawn Williams is."

And my ears perk up.

So, he comes on down to the office.

The tipster said that
he had heard from his brother,

who lived
in the Cobus Green Trailer Park,

that Tyshawn Williams
was in the trailer park

and that he was actually hiding
underneath a nearby trailer.

What the tipster said was when
the police came to the trailer park

and knocked on the specific door,

Tyshawn was inside and the young
lady was hiding him in the trailer.

After the police leave, which
would've been myself and my partner,

Tyshawn leaves that trailer

and goes and hides
underneath another trailer.

And he was hiding under that
other trailer waiting for nightfall

so that he could actually slip out
under the cover of darkness

because he thought that we had
the trailer park on surveillance.

By January in South Bend, Indiana,

it's getting dark pretty early.

So, there's a time clock
for me at this point.

I'm like I need to get back
out to the trailer park.

Detective Wiley reaches back out

to the outside agencies for help

to send them back out there, and
he eventually meets them out there.

We go out to that trailer,
start yelling under the trailer,

"Tyshawn Williams, come out,
come out, come out."

Nothing. Nobody's moving,
nothing happening.

I had asked for a canine, a dog
to come out to help pick him up

and get him out there.
The dog was not available.

So, in a moment of,

I don't know, genius or stupidity,

I start making fake barking sounds.

And he panics thinking that
there's an actual dog, a canine.

And he says, "OK, I'm coming out,
don't let the dog bite me."

So, he comes out from underneath
the trailer and I got him.

And I was able to put
my cuffs on him.

It was the culmination
of over a month's worth of work

of trying to find him.

My heart was... through the roof.

They said he is under arrest.

Oh, I screamed, I cried, I yelled.

I was happy cos now we could
sleep better at night.

For the time being.

After reading him Miranda,
Tyshawn agrees to speak with us.

During Tyshawn's version
of what occurred,

he claimed that he rode a bus
to the Miami Hills Apartment Complex

through an invite from Angelica.

And when he arrived,
two unknown male blacks

had followed him up the staircase.

He says he gets up
to the apartment door,

the two male blacks
that followed him,

brought up their guns
and just started shooting at him.

That he's able to get out
of the way of the bullets,

by dodging the bullets somehow.

He says somebody from inside
of the apartment

ups a gun themselves and starts
shooting out of the apartment.

And then everybody runs away.

That was his story.

Well, I told him that we had cameras

at the apartment building
complex area

and that his version of events
did not in any way match

with what we had on video.

They did have cameras at one time,

but they had been struck by
lightning about two months prior

and they stopped working,
and nobody knew about it.

Once Tyshawn realises that
that lie has been busted,

he conforms to another lie.

So, he says he gets an invite
from Angelica

to go down to the apartments.

He goes down there with his friend.

Tyshawn says that his friend's
first name is Bruce,

but he doesn't provide
any additional information

on who Bruce is.

During the interview with Tyshawn,

he claims to never have
a gun of his own.

So, I showed him the picture
of the threat of him

holding a gun to the camera

and he says,
"Well, yeah, I only had that gun,

but I don't have it anymore
and I didn't have it

on the day of the shooting."

When Tyshawn's pressed
further, he stops the interview.

Tyshawn is then taken to jail
and booked on the charge of murder.

The next day, Tyshawn reaches out
to the jail staff

and asks to speak
with investigators again.

Tyshawn claims
that he is now ready to tell

what really happened
during the shooting.

Tyshawn Williams tells investigators

that he wants to apologise

for what took place
the day of the murder.

Tyshawn says that
he did get an invite from Angelica

to come down to Miami Hills.

And Bruce had been with him when he
hears this phone call from Angelica.

The threats that were coming
into Angelica from Tyshawn,

Tyshawn says Bruce is the one
who was using his phone

and his social media account
to send those to Angelica.

He was present
when the threats are being sent,

but he says it's all Bruce doing
all the texting

and all the messages
and sending all that to Angelica.

This is the first time we've heard
of Bruce's last name being Thomas.

So, Bruce Thomas and Tyshawn go down
to the Miami Hills area together

and they go to the apartment door.

Tyshawn says that when they get down
to the apartment door,

the door opens,

and Dominic and Bruce Thomas
begin firing guns at each other.

Tyshawn says
that Bruce catches a bullet

in one of his fingers
on his right hand.

Well, eventually we start
confronting Tyshawn more and more

about we know ballistically
that there are two guns,

not just one gun.

We explained to him what ballistics
are, how ballistics work,

and the imprint pattern that's
on the back of a shell casing.

Finally he says,
"OK, I did have a gun,

but I only fired it
in surprise one time

when the other gunfire
is going off."

And he's still claiming that Dominic
is in the apartment shooting out,

which again, that does not match

with any of the physical evidence
that we have.

There are no gunfire behind
where the shooters would've been.

But Tyshawn says
right after the shooting,

he fled the apartment with Bruce.

They go down
and get into a green vehicle

that had been waiting for them.

Tyshawn said
that the driver of the car

was a woman named Tania.

Tyshawn said Tania was driving
a green Pontiac Bonneville.

After figuring out

Bruce Thomas was the second person
involved in the shooting,

we began looking around for him,

and ultimately find out
that he was arrested

and sitting
in the St Joseph County Jail.

Bruce had been arrested
for an unrelated burglary charge

and was actually
on a warrant arrest.

We go to the jail, my partner and I,

we go and we try to talk
with Bruce Thomas,

explain that
"we're with the Metro Homicide Unit,

wanna talk to you about a homicide
investigation we're conducting."

He totally rejects our invitation
for an interview.

But while he's sitting at the table,
he puts his hands on the table

and he has a bandage on
the ring finger of his right hand.

Bruce wouldn't really tell us
what happened to his hand.

but he was trying to hide it.

We show her a photo lineup,
which does contain Bruce Thomas.

We're asking her if this is
the second gunman from the hallway.

She looks at the photo lineup,
but she does not identify anybody.

At this point, it's possible
that Tyshawn didn't know

who Bruce Thomas was and
that he was just making it all up.

He used Bruce Thomas
as a scapegoat for his real friend

who was still out and about.
So, we got to do more digging.

Through Tyshawn Williams'
several social media accounts

we found him having other
communications throughout the day,

asking people to give him a ride.

And Tania Mosly agrees
to pick him up

and take him to Miami Hills.

We identify where Tania Mosly lives
down in Tippecanoe, Indiana.

We invite her back for an interview
at the Metro Homicide Unit.

She agrees.

During Tania's interview,
she wasn't very forthcoming

with information
until she was explained

that she's just as guilty
as pulling the trigger

and killing Cleeve Chick
being the getaway driver.

Once Tania decided to open up,

she gave us what we needed
to close the case.

Tania was a reliable witness
for identification purposes

on Tyshawn and Bruce because
she had been romantically involved

with both of them at one point.

Tania said Tyshawn
had asked her to pick him up

and take him to
the Miami Hills Apartment Complex,

which she agreed to do.

Her and Tyshawn saw
Bruce walking on the road

entering Miami Hills
Apartment Complex.

Tyshawn asked Bruce if
he would come with him,

in which Bruce agreed to.

I don't know if she knew
the magnitude of...

Tyshawn going there
to shoot the place up,

but she had to know something
was going on.

Tania parked the car
while Tyshawn and Bruce

went into one of the buildings.

Tania stated
while she was waiting in the car,

she heard several gunshots.

A short time later,

Bruce and Tyshawn come running out
of the apartment building,

get into the car and drive away.

Tania said she knew
both Bruce and Tyshawn

to carry guns on their persons,

but she didn't see a gun
that day on either one.

Tania heard Tyshawn apologising

to Bruce multiple times in the car

as they were leaving about Tyshawn
shooting Bruce in the finger.

Tania drove Tyshawn
to his mother's house

and then she took Bruce
down to her house the same night.

Later the same night
of the shooting,

Bruce is convinced to go to the
hospital by Tania and her father.

They go up to receive a medical
treatment for a gunshot wound.

Bruce told the hospital staff there

that he had simply shot himself
accidentally.

Tania said that
she was afraid of Bruce.

She knew that a murder
had taken place in South Bend

and that Bruce was totally
involved in it.

So, she was afraid that Bruce
was gonna take her out

as the only witness to him
being involved in this murder.

Tania didn't like Bruce's behaviour

so she reported him having
a burglary warrant

out of St Joe County
to her probation officer.

Bruce Thomas was later arrested and
sent to the St Joseph County Jail

for his burglary warrant.

We reached out to get the medical
records for Bruce Thomas,

and upon receiving them,

it was confirmed that
he did have an injury to his finger

that they believed
to be a gunshot wound.

Tania did face charges
for this case.

We never did take her into custody

with the understanding
that if we called for her,

she would come testify
and she'd be truthful

about what she testified about,

but that we were not gonna file
charges against her.

An old ATF agent friend of mine
used to tell me,

if I'm gonna make
a case against the devil,

I got to interview demons
to make the case.

Tyshawn Williams was arrested
for the murder Cleeve Chick

on January 21st, 2016.

Bruce Thomas was arrested
for the murder of Cleeve Chick

February 5th, 2016.

We now believe we know what happened
in the murder of Cleeve Chick.

On December 12th, 2015,

Angelica Jones moves out
of Tyshawn Williams's mother's house

after he had choked
and put a gun to her head.

Angelica decides to take the kids

and move into the YWCA
for their safety.

Angelica takes the kids
to her brother's place

so they can celebrate
Christmas Eve.

Clay Shaefer is also staying
with Meaghan Lloyd.

Tyshawn is suspicious

that Angelica and Clay Shaefer
are romantically involved.

Tyshawn begins to threaten
Clay and Angelica

after a picture is posted
to social media

of the two of them
snuggling on the couch.

Clay receives a picture from Tyshawn

depicting Tyshawn pointing
a gun at the camera.

So, earlier the same day,

Tyshawn Williams reaches out
to Tania Mosly

and asks her to give him
a ride to Miami Hills. She agrees.

While en route to Miami Hills,

they see Bruce Thomas
on the side of the road.

Tyshawn asks Bruce
to come with him.

He agrees.

Tyshawn and Bruce
knock on the door of Meaghan,

hoping to find Angelica and Clay
inside the apartment.

I personally believe Tyshawn
is looking for Clay

because of the relationship that
he manufactured in his own head

between Clay and Angelica.

When the door opens,
Meaghan sees them in the hallway.

She yells out, "They got guns!"
Door gets slammed in their face.

In an act of heroism,
Cleeve Chick pushes the door closed,

holds it closed with his own body,

saving the lives of the women
and children in the apartment.

During the barrage of gunfire,

Bruce gets hit in the finger.

Cleeve is shot multiple times

and dies as a matter
of his injuries.

I believe Tyshawn Williams went
to that apartment with the intention

of causing havoc
and perhaps even more murders.

The trial for Bruce Thomas
is held July 2016.

After two hours of
deliberation, the jury comes back

with a guilty verdict on Bruce
Thomas for the murder Cleeve Chick.

Bruce was sentenced
to 55 years in prison.

The trial for Tyshawn Williams
is held in January of 2017.

Me and my sister went
every single day,

and we sat there
for countless hours.

I owed that to Cleeve.
I owed him justice.

After four hours of deliberation,

the jury finds Tyshawn Williams
guilty of reckless homicide

but not murder.

Tyshawn Williams
is sentenced to six years in prison.

I feel like it's not fair.

The mastermind of it
should have got just as much time

as the person that was brought
to the scene of the crime.

I don't know if Tyshawn will ever

come after my daughter
Angelica again,

but I feel sorry for the next woman
that he does deal with,

because it's a pattern.

It bothers me
that Tyshawn Williams didn't feel

the full force of justice
for having committed this murder.

In my heart, I believe he should
have been found guilty of murder.

But that is the way of our system.

The system works, it just doesn't
always work the way we want it to.

If anything stays with me
in the case,

it's the fact that this happened
on Christmas Eve.

You know,
that's a time of celebration,

not a time to bury a loved one.

Cleeve Chick
will always be right here.

I got him forever on my arm.

He's always gonna be
part of my life.

And I'm sorry that
he's not here with us today.

Even if it ain't with me, with us,

the people in this world,

cos he was a good,
kind-hearted person.
