six years after failing to put his

subterranean still sight
into operation, Josh and

list the help of lifelong
Moonshiner Henry Law.

In hopes of finally getting his dream off
the ground.

Chuck had to go back to Arkansas for some
family business.

I got to have some help to get this done.

We go down these steps straight off the
cliff.

I got a 275 gallon copper pot right over
there.

that we cut the corner on
because we was in a hurry.

It was a ventilation system.

I was thinking about running a pop through

All of our exhausts will actually go out
of here instead of coming in here.

He had no smoke stack on it.

If the fumes can't escape, you can die
right there in the cave.

All right, so all we got to do is get that
vent up through that ground right there.

Let's do it then.

Let's get this job done.

We've got to dig down through the top of
this thing, tie in a smoke stack,

and then hook that steel up down
underneath it and draw all the fumes out.

Once we get that stack in, he'll be able
to use it with no fumes.

I'm not scared of rats at all.

I look like two stuck together.

But I just don't lock it dirty bastards.

You have to go work, guess we'll go up
there and cut that hole.

As long as they stay up there and they
don't touch me and I ain't touching them

and I ain't got to touch nothing they
touched.

We're going to have to poke a hole through
the ceiling.

That means they're going to dig dirt away,
cut a hole through it, run it through

waterproof it, put it all back together,

So we took that piece of double pipe,
stuck it down in the night.

You've got to make sure it doesn't leak.

Now that we've got the hole cut,
we're going to make sure it doesn't leak.

We've got the pop in place.

Now we've got to install it to the
furnace.

We're going to figure these goods that
work in the pot, right?

We're going to go to that lip right there.

We're going to liquor in an underground
steel site with gas.

It's very critical that we get it right.

In Haywood County, North Carolina,
after hearing their bootleggers say he

paid $200 a gallon for true barrel-aged
whiskey.

Mike and Jerry are determined to earn his
business.

Even though they have no-aged whiskey to
sell.

Everybody knows how to use wood chips to
give whiskey a barrel-aged taste.

I mean, it's called Rapid Agent.

But Rapid Agent ain't going to fool this
customer.

We've got to come up with a process that's
better than Rapid Agent to convince this

guy that the liquor we
actually running here today

has actually been aged
for two years in a barrel.

I'll tell you what, we got a good start.

Our plan is to take some light,
charred wood chips and some dark charred

wood chips and put them in our jar of red
and run them through the liquor.

Get her fired up, Jerry.

Got the gas.

Put some steam to it, boy.

You know, running the alcohol papers
through the woods in the jar of eggs was

to help soften the woods and extract the
flavors a lot faster.

Perhaps then putting it in a barrel that's
set.

There ain't no bubble action going on
because of them chips.

This is so cool.

It's so porous in there.

I can see a little bubbles going on.

You see it right here, you see it good.

Oh, yeah.

She's bubbling that on that bottle,

Running alcohol with a wood chip is not
going to work.

It happens way too fast.

The vapor is way too hot.

It just brings out all the bad tannins and
stuff with the wood.

That right there won't sail until it
barely goes.

I might as well had a crushed up like a
thousand peeps pits in there and ground

them up and soak alcohol in because that's
exactly what it tastes like.

Gotta get the alcohol out of the pot.

So I'm out of this dumpies jar.

Let's strip all the alcohol
out of the pot and we'll carry

it back to the shop and see
what we can do with our flavor.

And we'll figure out some
kind of other soaking method

or a shaking method or a
rolling method or something.

We've got to figure out another way to
wrap it up at age whisk.

So we're going to run the
rest of this mash without the

wood chips and try to come
up with another game plan.

discovering an unknown bootlegger,

flooding the outlaw
market with an industrial

alcohol called GNS
or grain neutral spirits.

The grain neutral spirits,
they run them on those big

stills and they strip all the
flavor in a room out of it.

So that I can basically be flavored to
taste like anything they want.

Mark and Digger are determined to hunt
down the unscrupulous party before the

cheap imitation product undermines their
centuries-old craft of backwoods moonshine.

And they're representing it as backwoods
pot still run corn liquor.

And it ain't.

Now, Stan's true blue.

He's old climbing.

He's not no snitch.

And, you know, he wouldn't tell me where
he was getting in.

And Digger, we're going to meet up with
Stan.

He's a good friend, not only has he been a
loyal customer for years.

He's the reason I found out about this
cheap liquor.

Well, man ain't living up to what he's
supposed to be fulfilling.

He deserves to be turned out.

That may sway Stan to help us a little
more.

True mountain people
are spending this business,

whether you're making
liquor or just buying liquor.

And we don't ride each other out unless
there's a good reason to.

And this is one of the times that we feel
there's a good reason, too, because this

guy's misrepresenting himself and his
product.

That's something that's coming off of some

the end of an old dirt road.

So, we may just go find this young man.

Spring Creek Road.

Yeah, you just pull up there and flash
your lights at him twice.

And he'll come on down to you.

And we got to put a stop to it.

Not only for ourselves, but all the other
legitimate moonshiners in the area.

You and my friend have just turned
yourself a case of genuine corn lately.

Actually, backward to meadly.

I appreciate that.

That's a good look, all right?

Yeah, really.

Well, we got a lot of good clear corn and
wheat liquor here.

Now, we just got to figure out something
to do with it.

You know, we just tried running our good
alcohol vapor through all these wood chips

like we would be infusing some type of
flavor.

It's the most done-offless, snastiest
taste you ever want to do.

We've got a bunch of clear whiskey.

We're going to start all over.

Figure out what we can do next.

We've tried about everything we used to
do.

Set and waitin'.

Well, I mean, the whole
idea in a barrel is the fact that

it's soaking in that barrel
and it's breathing in and out.

So I figure if we just run the alcohol over
the chips, we'll get that same reaction.

You'll soak it up and then continue some
movement and rinse it out.

I don't see why not.

Let's do it.

We do that.

Let's get this on.

So we've come up with
another method to try to color

this alcohol and get the
flavor that we're looking for.

All right, comes.

We'll figure in what if we take the
alcohol and do it like a waterfall,

but it flow over these
chips and continuously cycle

back over and over again
until we reach that flavor.

And that color profile... I can actually
see a little bit of tinge in it already.

Oh, yeah.

I'd say let's heat it up.

If you'll grab our little stove top,
I can make us a little cap to go on a jar.

And we'll be ready to rock and roll.

We're going to stove top.

We're going to try to heat up this alcohol
in line with our pump.

We've got to find that happy medium.

We can't steam it through the jars like we
did.

That was way too much.

They heat up gradually.

We're getting darker there, Jerry.

It is getting darker.

I'm starting to get this aroma coming out
over here.

You know, we're about 120-ish degrees so
far.

All you're talking about is tasting.

It's getting better.

You know, our goal is to be able to hit
right around the 150-ish degrees.

We don't get much higher than that because
we don't want our alcohol vaporizing.

We vaporize our alcohol.

We're just going to put it right back in
the atmosphere.

It's going to be gone forever.

And it's looking real good, ain't it?

It's good or true.

I'm pretty excited, man.

See how this works.

Oh, it spoils good.

Got the nose on.

That's got a real good nose on.

It's just not where we're where we need to
be.

That's for sure.

You know, this alcohol
may not be exactly where we

want it to be, but it's got
a very good body to it.

It's got a really good nose.

A customer that drinks a
lot of age whiskey would

definitely know that's not a
two or three-year-old whiskey.

Me and Jerry want to take the extra steps,
the colons, and time to make this right.

We go give up, man.

That's $200 a gallon.

We can get for the slicker.

Yeah.

That's money we can afford to lose.

You know, we've definitely learned
something here today.

We feel like we're making good progress.

You know, we need to keep working.

This is not what we want
to sell to the customer,

but we're definitely
in the right direction.

Now it's got to build some deer stand.

It's going to be eight feet tall on the
front end, seven feet tall on the back end.

I can't have this chimney just taking out

stand on top of the
underground still side.

That way, you know,
he can run his exhaust

up through there and
it can come out the top.

It's not out in place in any fashion.

That's where I work belongs.

Let's stick a wood stove in place.

I'm quickly realizing that this ain't no
deer blind that I'm used to.

So far, I've been a contractor,
a painter.

I was afraid we were going to start
plumbing this summer if we kept going.

Usually, when I build a deer blind,
it's made out of scrap lumber that you

find laying here there and you just kind
of slap it up together, as long as it

blocks the wind off of you and kind of
covers you up.

When's the tile guy getting here to lay
tiles?

You're very on the camouflage house.

I've never seen this much construction put
into a deer blind, but hey, you know,

maybe that's how they build them in North
Carolina, I don't know.

in, and we should be good.

The whole reason to build this is to damp

And this is going to be able to pass right

to kill deer turkeys right here.

I'm going to be able to get rid of any of
the gases that's in our steel side.

You're going to be able to be able to fire
here and stay warm when I'm hunting.

You'll be able to spend a night here for
want to do hell.

This is going to work good.

got me thinking a lot about my family,

especially my dad.

I want to do a special
run of liquor that brings

all the things we are
as a family together.

He've heard the stories about my family
being monitors and shotters.

in it.

I don't want to worry
anything about some

moonshine with some
gold flakes floating in it.

Kind of a novelty
type thing, but... Yeah.

Make it the color of the liquor's gold.

When we coming from a
whole long line of monitors

and shotters, it's going
to only make sense.

And I make some moonshine, put some gold
in it, and sell some liquid gold.

This is about my heritage.

This is about my family.

This is about keeping traditions alive.

that it is strictly regulated.

We know that whoever is
obtaining it, and making this fake corn

moonshine liquor out of it,
they're not getting it legally.

We could just try to
buffalo him and just

tell him, we know
you're stealing this liquor.

I know where you're stealing it.

They've asked me about it.

So, you've got 24 hours to go dump your
**** on the ground and get out of business.

If you don't stop, then we're right in
your ass out.

Not to the lower mind, but
we're telling the people that

you're getting the stolen
GNS from where it's going.

So, diggers come up
with a plan that we're going

to make him think we
know more than we really do.

Kind of buffalo him, so to speak,
or run a bluff on him.

I think we can smoke him out and run him
back home.

We've got to be careful.

We've got to handle this with kid gloves.

We've got tread lightly.

I mean, our dog ain't got no teeth,
so they ain't no bite there.

Our information is zero.

This is just all the blood.

So, we've got to be prepared for whatever
comes out on no side of the tongue.

Hopefully, it'll do what it's intended to
do, and shut him down.

It's been a long, hard road
that we've been on, but we're

finally at the point where we're
about to make some moonshine.

And for a moonshine, that means
everything.

I'm just going to do some corn whiskey,
and we're going to add some cinnamon to it.

Yeah.

And you know as well
as I do, when you use

cinnamon, it can go either
way on there real fast.

Yeah, we want the flavor not to fire.

Oh, she ready.

She's balling.

I'm going to go ahead and cut the baller
off.

All we've got to do now is transfer a
bucket to water.

I hate what happened to do this the hard
way.

It is what it is.

This first run is made in five years,
but she's working.

The next step is now that we've got some
hot water, pour some grain in there.

This cool new we're
about to use and it's got

quite the reputation in
the moonshine world.

Don't from sugar to it.

A lot of moonshines have
used it to make liquor in the past,

so I feel like we're about to
make a premier moonshine.

Then we're going to find out
if we're going to make your

thing worth having and I'll
go down some cinnamon to it.

I've made corn whiskey a hundred times.

You can smell it, big tough.

That's not the problem.

Today we're experimenting with cinnamon.

The difference between two months,
and not enough is about this much,

but when you get it right, it makes a
great drink.

Man, that's good.

Tastes just like cinnamon toast.

Does it not?

Greet some cinnamon in it.

I can't wait to see how this turns out.

While this mash is
working off, I'm going to go

pay for some gold flakes

What we do have plenty of is flakes and

this.

They just dug in the creek and had a pan

And so I found what they needed.

I found a determined to find some real
gold.

This one is for all the miners and the
shiners in my family.

To be in the same hills, digging for gold.

And I'm making moonshine.

Let's see what we can come up with in this
thing.

When we're getting close to
our mark, man, but, you know, this

octa hall right here ain't
going to cut the mustard sauce.

You know, man, Jerry's been busting our
butts trying to come up with a way to make

her clear liquor taste like it's been in
the barrel agent for two years.

So this whole time, our boot
leather genius thinks we've

been out there trying to source
two-year-old barrel agents.

But anyways, we've got all these little
beauty poems.

We've got to find a
way, Jerry, to get the

alcohol in these chips
and back out of them.

It's quick, it's possible.

Maybe, maybe put them under pressure or
something.

Well, if we used high
pressure, that would

actually force that
alcohol into that wood.

And then if we put it under a vacuum,
that would actually extract it back out.

I've actually got a vessel we can do that
in.

Put them chips under some kind of
pressure, along with this alcohol,

and force it into those chips.

Let it sit for a little while.

We're going to take a look and see what I
can come up with.

Don't bring something back's going to blow
us up, man.

So the plan is, we're going to put our
