Welcome to a beautiful summer
day here in the highlands,

a romantic realm of clans
and castles,

of misty moors
and bottomless lochs.

This has long been considered
the spiritual heart of scotland,

and the proud traditions
of the people who live here

are on full display
just over those hills

at a competition
unlike any other.

[ bagpipes playing ]

the highland games,

a contest that dates back
more than 1,000 years

and carries on to this day
to honor the spirit of scotland.

According to local lore,

the first games were held
by clan chiefs

to choose
their mightiest warriors.

Today, they also showcase
scotland's finest dancers

and the not-so-finest.

decked out like an extra
from "outlander,"

I take in the carnival
atmosphere of the games.

Well, I got
my nice waistcoat here.

I got my high sock.

This is called a sgian-dubh
down here,

and, of course,
I've got my sporran.

"sporran" is
an old scottish word.

It means "iphone holder."

[ keyboard clicking ]

for centuries,
scotland was ruled by clans,

with each clan chief in charge
of his own mini kingdom

represented by a coat of arms
and tartan plaid.

So in this tent,
they're having a clan rally,

which is very different

than what we think of
in the united states.

All the big scottish clans
are here.

You've got, you know,
the macdougalls

and the clan macdonald,

famous, of course,
for the 99-cent value menu.

Clan maclean here, famous for
their victory at nakatomi tower.

It's a "die hard" joke.

I don't really know much
about these clans.

I'm going to read up
a little bit.

back on the field,
it doesn't take long to realize

that every event
in the highland games...

[ grunts ]

[ cheers and applause ]

...Basically involves throwing
something really heavy --

the scottish hammer...

...The weight over bar...

Yeah!

...And the infamous caber toss,
where competitors attempt

to flip a telephone-pole-sized
beam end-over-end.

It's as difficult
as it sounds...

[ crowd groans ]

...But that hasn't
stopped me before.

does anybody have

My back no longer works.

having learned a bit about
deeply rooted

scottish traditions,
I pop a few aspirin and travel

100 miles to a remote stretch of
beach in the western highlands.

I'm here to meet gregor ewing,

a leading expert
on the lost rebel gold

and the prince
at the center of the legend.

Okay, so lets talk
kind of basics here.

Who is this guy?
Who is bonnie prince charlie?

Right.

He was
a good-looking guy.

So who is he
in their family?

Okay, so this uprising
is like a real-life

"game of thrones,"
but with way more characters

and fewer dragons, so buckle up.

It's 1603, and scotland and
England unite under this guy,

james stuart, king of scots.

The throne passes to his son,
charles I,

but being king
kind of goes to his head,

which promptly gets lopped off.

[ crowd gasps ]

and things only go downhill
from there.

His son, charles ii,
is a king in name only,

and this dude, oliver cromwell,
a.K.A. Tyrion lannister

from "game of thrones,"
holds the real power.

Charles ii dies suddenly.

Some say he's poisoned,
which is, like,

the number-one way
to kill kings, for some reason,

and his brother, james ii,
takes the throne.

James here may have
a heavy-metal wig,

but he's also a catholic,

which means the church
of England isn't exactly a fan.

So in 1688,
they give him the boot,

and he's shipped off to France.

See you later. Have fun.

Supporters of the exiled king
calling themselves jacobites

launch a series
of failed rebellions.

Fast-forward to 1745,

and here is where our guy
comes in, bonnie prince charlie.

Yay! Yay!
Yay! Yay!

He's the grandson
of the exiled king,

and he sails from France
back to scotland

to mount a final effort
to reclaim his family throne.

Whew, oh, and don't worry.

There won't be a quiz later.

So he comes over here,
and what is he packing?

Does he have an army
with him?

Either he's crazy
or he's a man with a plan.

Many of these clan chiefs feel

that the english are
stripping away scottish rights,

so they rally behind
bonnie prince charlie,

who they're convinced will be
a better king for scotland.

They take edinburgh, wow.
Okay, so he's doing great.

So he's on the doorstep
of the throne, really.

Prince charlie promises
the clan chiefs

that they'll have financial
and military support

from the french,

an arrangement he made
while still in exile.

But the crucial aid
has yet to arrive,

so instead of pressing forward,
charlie is forced to retreat.

The rebels withdraw all the way
to inverness

with the british in pursuit.

They face off at
the brutal battle of culloden.

[ indistinct shouting ]

decimated by a bigger,
better-equipped army,

1,500 highlanders fall
in less than an hour.

The uprising is crushed.

Prince charlie and his troops
flee for their lives.

Hunted by the british,

charlie spent six months
on the run,

crisscrossing
the western islands

and somehow managing
to elude capture

in a game of cat and mouse

through the remote frontiers
of the scottish highlands.

You followed
his entire route?

And how far
did you walk?

But would you walk 500 more?
Well...

It's a proclaimers joke.

It's an oldie,
but it's a -- forget it.

They're a scottish band.

It felt --
sorry, low-hanging fruit.

Two weeks after
the battle of culloden,

while the prince
and his rebels are scattered

and running for their lives,

the gold promised
by the french finally arrives,

too late to save the rebellion.

Literally at our feet?
Yeah.

So where do we go?

Really?
Yeah.

looking for
the lost gold of scotland.

In 1745, scottish rebels

continues aboard the jacobite,

a classic steam train
traveling to fort william.

There's just something magical
about traveling by rail.

This train is gorgeous.

look familiar to me.

I did not know that.

I was not

the train chugs past
a stretch of the highlands

that was sympathetic
to the rebels

where charlie
and the gold could hide.

Where are we headed?

Loch arkaig?
Yes.

Why do we think
the gold went there?

Yeah, so it's a safe
plot of land

that was being watched over
by the prince's money man.

How do we know that?

Okay, so it says, "buried near
to the head of loch arkaig,"

where we're going,

"opposite to callich,"
and callich is a place?

Okay, "louis d'or,"
these are the coins in question,

15,000 of them.

this is like
half the treasure...

Yeah.
...In one place.

I mean, you never get
something like this.

Like, in all these
buried-treasure stories,

there's never an account
of exactly where it went.

the last stop on the jacobite
is fort william,

so we switched to a four-by-four
and followed the trail

of prince charlie and the gold
to the edge of loch arkaig,

where gregor has arranged
for a boat

to take us to the location
in the ledger.

He's also recruited some help.

How you doing?
Yeah, doing good.

There's treasure to be found.

derek and sharon discovered
the galloway viking hoard --

the largest viking treasure
ever unearthed in the u.K.

Unfortunately not.

It will go on display
in a museum,

and then they do
give us a reward,

which is based on the
market value of the treasure.

we read

across from callich.

So it's kind of a natural place
to dock in, okay.

All right. Are we ready
to find some treasure?

we reach the remote western edge
of the loch,

directly across from callich.

♪

according to the ledger,

prince charles'
trusted treasurer,

a man named murray of broughton,
landed on this very beach

with nearly half the gold,
15,000 louis d'or coins.

A few months later,
charlie spent

a few nights on the lam
in this area before moving on.

They wrote down in the book
that it was here.

We know charlie
came through here.

Yep.

Right.

oh, my god.

It's a proper ruin!

Look at this!

This building could be
a hideout, right?

This ruin, all that remains of
a stone cottage from the 1700s,

may have hidden
bonnie prince charlie

as he fled from the british,

and it may also
have been a safe house

where charlie's supporters
guarded the gold.

We literally
could be standing

in prince charlie's
footsteps.

we find more evidence
of habitation.

take it out piece by piece

and see what we've got and see

After the uprising,

the british tightened
their grip on scotland.

Soldiers roamed the countryside,

arresting rebels laying low
in cottages just like this one.

Laws are passed banning
the wearing of tartan plaid

and the playing of bagpipes.

These harsh measures
nearly destroy highland culture

and lead to a mass immigration
of scots

to the rest of europe
and to the new world.

It's really wild.

but it's treasure
all the same.

we continue searching for hours,

turning up artifact
after artifact...

We have a peat spade!

...All of which help shape
our view

of life
during charlie's rebellion.

Derek, sharon, and gregor will
be back to continue their work,

but as for the gold,

there may be a good reason
we're not finding it.

There are some who claim that
it was moved from loch arkaig

to another safe house,
and I'm meeting an explorer

who believes
he just cracked the code

as to where
the treasure went next.

So I drive 160 miles south
to the city of edinburgh.

Today, the streets of edinburgh

look much as they did
in September of 1745,

when prince charlie
and the rebels seized the city

without firing a shot.

I head across town
for a wee dram

at the oldest pub in scotland,
the sheep heid inn.

Locals bellied up to this bar
more than 100 years before

columbus set sail
for the new world,

and I'm here to meet explorer,
archaeologist, and expert

in all things jacobite
ashley cowie.

on how this very pub
played a role

in the story

The sheep's heid,
where we're sitting right now,

allegedly, bonnie prince charlie
stayed the night here.

So charlie was here.

Possibly where we're sitting
right now.

So I've followed
this story up

in loch arkaig
in the highlands.

Now, many people believe
the gold was there.

Do you think it was there?
I believe it was there.

It was passed into the hands
of cluny macpherson.

So who's cluny macpherson?

Cluny macpherson is
the right-hand man,

the most trusted
military general

of the
jacobite uprising.

So he is one of charlie's
big supporters.

Charlie's best friend.

What does macpherson do
with the gold?

He's on the run.

Just like many other highlanders
under british rule,

cluny macpherson is stripped
of his land,

his castle, and his heritage.

Cluny and prince charlie
end up hiding out together.

Charlie eventually
escapes to France,

leaving the gold
with cluny for safekeeping.

The treasure is
never seen again.

He's hiding out
in the central highlands,

where he hid with
the treasure for nine years.

It eventually became known
as charlie's cave.

So where's
charlie's cave?

The big question.
Yeah.

People have looked for it
for 250 years.

I'm telling you now,
josh,

I've made a discovery
that could write

the next chapter
in this entire story.

the national library
of scotland,

where ashley's research has
turned up a stunning new lead.

many historians believe

that prince charlie
visited cluny macpherson,

somewhere in
this area here.

Have a look around here.

Is there anything
you notice?

I notice, a-ha,
prince charlie's cave.

So this is the spot
where charlie is meant

to have hid out
or where the gold went?

That's the spot,

And so if we were to go here
to prince charlie's cave,

would we find a big cave
and a big hoard of gold?

You're going to find
disappointment.

You see prince charlie's cave

but on the landscape,
there's nothing.

In my research, I found a map
that predates this.

And it shows something
truly extraordinary.

a rare gem

from the museum's collection --

an interlocking map of
the central highlands from 1783.

This is one of the coolest maps
I have ever seen.

This is
absolutely beautiful.

So this is the east coast
of scotland,

and we're moving west.

So the area we want to look at
is up here

in this corner
of the map, josh.

Right.

But I want you to have a look
at the same area.

Do you see anything missing
on this map?

Yes,
the cave.

There's no mention
of it.

It's not on here.
It's not there, right?

The whole western side
of the loch is just blank.

So then I want you
to have a look

on the opposite bank
of the loch.

On the eastern side?
Yep.

You can see trees down here,
right?

But look at the tiny letters
between the trees.

Read that out.

"place where c.S.
Hid himself, 1746."

think about c.S.
What might that mean?

Charles stuart?

On the button.

It's literally on
the opposite side of the loch,

and the year
is right, 1746.

Absolutely.

That's charlie.

You're looking at
a treasure map, josh.

library of scotland

hunting for clues that
could lead to a treasure trove

of gold belonging
to prince charles stuart.

In 1746, charles is on the run
from the british

and conceals himself

with the help of his trusted
general cluny macpherson.

Modern maps refer to this spot
as charlie's cave

and place it on
the western side of loch ericht.

You see prince charlie's cave
on the map,

but on the landscape,
there's nothing.

However, explorer ashley cowie
has uncovered a rare antique map

that shows something remarkable
on the opposite shore.

"place where
c.S. Hid himself."

think about c.S.
What might that mean?

Charles stuart?
Absolutely.

You're looking at
a treasure map, josh.

and ashley has also
uncovered an account

of what the safe house
may have looked like in a book

written by the jacobites
in 1747.

This volume here was composed
by donald macpherson,

who's cluny macpherson's
brother.

So this book describes

not only
where charlie hid out

but where cluny
held the treasure.

Okay,
and so what does it say?

"the trees were in so woven
with ropes.

This whole fabric hung,
as it were,

by a large tree

which gave it
the name of the cage."

so this is describing
some sort of a lean-to,

some sort of
a structure,

but it's referred to
as a cage.

The original version
is describing a cage,

and the modern maps
show a cave.

Wouldn't it be
just a bit too much,

I mean, beyond coincidence,
for "cage" and "cave"

not to refer
to the same structure?

Right.

So you think that over time,
like a game of telephone,

it was mistranscribed
on the maps.

Yeah.
All that takes is one slip once,

and then everything
that comes after

changes the description
from a cage to a cave.

So all the people that have been
looking for this treasure

in charlie's cave

have not only been looking
in the wrong place,

but they've been looking
for the wrong thing.

Absolutely, josh,
and that's precisely why I think

the treasure
has not been found.

armed with new intel that's
eluded historians for centuries,

ashley and I head north,

150 miles from edinburgh
to loch ericht,

where we meet with emil tanasie,

a geophysicist with the tools
to help us find cluny's cage

and the treasure
that may be hidden there.

is on the east side
of loch ericht,

several miles north
of our jumping-off point.

It's clear why prince charlie
and cluny macpherson

may have hid the gold out here.

It's nearly impossible to reach.

and there's the loch.

There she is,
loch ericht.

Cowie: This is as far
as the argo is going to go.

We're on foot from here, boys.

and hoof it the final few feet

to the cliff's edge
running above the loch.

With each step, the rock face
becomes steeper and steeper

until we're directly above
the location marked on the map

as the place
where c.S. Hid himself.

The ridge just keeps going
all the way down the loch.

My fear is that we're going to
actually pass the point

on the map
where this is meant to be.

We have to find a way

If we go down closer
to the loch,

He was homeless.

that cluny could have lived
