NARRATOR: Are
on their undercover mission
to rescue classic cars

for deserving owners...

TIM: Look at that.

What is it?

NARRATOR: This time...

TIM: Oh yes!

NARRATOR: The boys get
their hands on a real
continental beauty...

FUZZ: The Italians
certainly knew how to
make cars in the 60's.

NARRATOR: It's a rare classic.

-One sold for 140,000 as
a restoration project.

-That needed restoring?

NARRATOR: That takes them
on a quest across Europe...

-I need to get my
composure, calm, cool.

NARRATOR: In a race
against the clock...

FUZZ: Come on, let's go.

NARRATOR: To hopefully
give one unsuspecting owner
the surprise of their life!

-This is my car.
-This can't be the car.

-This is your car!

NARRATOR: Today Tim
and Fuzz are in Rochdale to
rescue an elegant Italian

with an impeccable pedigree.

-Which car are we
going to pick up?

-1967 Lancia Flavia coupe.

-And who designed the car,
the look of it?

-Oh Pinifarina,
yes that design house.

TIM: Back in the day when
this came out, if you had
the money to afford one you

would be turning down
a Mini and an E type.

You could have both
those car for the same
price as of one of these.

Import duty.

FUZZ: Ah yes, back then you
paid an absolute package if
you wanted an exotic motorcar.

NARRATOR: And back in the
60's they didn't come much more
exotic than the Flavia coupe.

Based on its elder brother
the stately 4-door saloon,
this Pinifarina designed

coupe was a real 'it' car.

This was a car to be seen in.

But hidden under a pile
of junk, it has been many,
many years since anyone's

given the one the
boys are off to see
an admiring glance.

It was once the Pride and
joy of father of two Derrick,
a man who's been

car mad since he
was a small boy.

So when he saw a second
hand Flavia for just 500
pounds, he snapped it up.

That was nearly
40 years ago, but after
a few summers of blissful

motoring it
developed a fault.

The perfect excuse
for Derrick to give the
car a full restoration.

But cruel fortune took a hand,
and a series of debilitating
health setbacks has meant work

on the car stalled
and stayed stalled...

TIM: Right Fuzz, word of
warning; around here you greet
everybody with, "alreet pal?"

-I am not going to say that.

-Aye, up chuck.

-Hello.

NARRATOR: It was Derrick's
daughter Gemma who wrote in
to Car SOS hoping the guys can

resurrect this rare
gem and give her dad
a much needed boost.

-Where is the car,
where is Derrick?

-The car is in the garage
and Derrick is not here.

Out for the day.

-Can we see it, where is it?
-Through the ginnel.

-Right, up the ginnel pal.

NARRATOR: Yes, you know
you're up North when they
call an alleyway a "Ginnel".

-How was it?
-It was good for me.

NARRATOR: Gemma prepares
to introduce them to the
other member of the family.

FUZZ: We are going to have to
do some excavation here.

-I'm going in!

Oh yes.

NARRATOR: And while the boys
dig the car out lets find
out a little bit more about

this 60s classic.

First introduced to the world
at the Turin Motor Show in
1960 the Flavia was the car

that marked a turning point
for Lancia, away from the
old fashioned look of their

earlier models it
heralded in a gold age
for this Italian marque.

Professor Antonio Fessia
had created an elegant
coupe That could cruise at

100 miles an hour.

(speaking Italian)

This was a grand tourer
that got you there in style.

-We're going
to like this one.

-Let me have a look!
-Go, Go!

NARRATOR: So while fuzz
burrows his way to the car...

-Fuzz, we'll see
you in a bit dude.

-There's loads
of stuff in here.

NARRATOR: Tim finds out
more about its owner Derrick.

TIM: Tell me a bit
about your dad.

GEMMA: He was a builder
and he always fixed cars.

He was very, very
good with his hands.

He built the garage,
he built the extension.

No garden because we
had the garage, yeah.

-Is he a car guy?
-Oh yeah, oh definitely.

He has a calendar on the
wall with the car's birthdays.

Hasn't got my birthday on.

-No way, I see some jealousy.

-Oh yeah, we are
definitely number two.

NARRATOR: We were intrigued
to find out a little bit more
about this man whose car gets

top billing on the calendar,
so we engineered a secret
interview by pretending to

film a regional news story
at a garden center and after
Derrick and wife Lorna had

perused some
perennials, we asked him
if he had any hobbies.

DERRICK: I play with
motorcars and make things.

LORNA: The only mistake we
made when we built the garage
was not to put a toilet in.

NARRATOR: But it wasn't
long before he turned the
conversation to a subject

he finds evergreen.

DERRICK: I have got a
Lancia Flavia Coupe 1967.

It's a classic.

I have had it since 1977,
funnily enough, 37 years.

We ran it for three and
a bit years and the head gasket
went so I took it off the road.

NARRATOR: And 'off the
road' is exactly where
the car's stayed.

FUZZ: Old rugs...

NARRATOR: When Fuzz
hits car, he thinks he
might have struck Gold.

FUZZ: Oh, what
we got here then?

Somebody has been
hard at work.

Painted the inside
of the floor.

Well, that's a good start.

Plenty of deck chairs though.

NARRATOR: It may be a good
start but for a rebuild that's
taken 30 years there's

still a lot to do.

So why does Derrick deserve
the Car SOS treatment?

GEMMA: He is 71 at the moment
and at the age of about 55
he was diagnosed with M.E.

TIM: Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis.

I know I have a
friend with it.

GEMMA: M.E. and it's
a tiny bit unexplained.

I suppose think that if it
had been a broken leg he could
have dealt with it better but

because it was
something a little bit.

-You couldn't see it.

-You couldn't see it so
it wasn't understandable.

TIM: And northerners
don't talk about
their problems much,

they're just thick
skinned, get on with it.

-Yeah.

NARRATOR: Derrick's
mobility has got so bad
that at times he can't even

get up the stairs.

The M.E. forced him to retire
from the building trade he
loved, and frustratingly,

it's made the restoration
of his beloved
car an impossible task.

DERRICK: I've got the shakes.

I can hardly hold a
screwdriver straight
these days so...

GEMMA: He has problems
with his circulation at the
moment and a couple of bypass

operations, for whatever
reason his hands shake a
little now and he's just not

as good with cars
as he used to be.

He wants to but he's just
not physically capable now.

NARRATOR: So Derrick buried
the car away, hoping that out
of sight meant out of mind.

which is a shame as this
Italian beauty deserves
to shine once again.

FUZZ: This dash is absolutely
gorgeous and the clocks
are so stylish as well.

The Italians certainly knew
how to make cars in the 60's.

Right, on we go.

Ah, okay, now
we're getting there.

Little things like door handles
and trim and it's all labelled.

That is the treasure
that we wanted.

NARRATOR: A primed body
and labelled parts?

For once this looks like a
straightforward re-assembly.

Fuzz must think
he's in heaven...

FUZZ: Let's have a
look around the front.

In the engine bay...

no engine!

NARRATOR: As part of its
full refurb Derrick sent the
Lancia's rare flat-4 engine

away to get the blown
head-gasket replaced, but
weeks later when he went back

to collect it the garage
had gone out of business and
he never saw the engine again.

FUZZ: That is going to
be a massive problem...

bad news.

NARRATOR: Speaking of things
missing how are they going to
explain the Lancia's absence

to a man who almost
lives in his garage.

GEMMA: We will tell
him when he notices the
car is gone that that is

his Christmas present.

Going to insulate the garage,
tidy it up and paint it.

TIM: Yeah, they still
haven't turned up yet Dad,

the painters still aren't
here, the insulators.

Right let's see how Fuzz
it getting on shall we?

What is the plan then?

FUZZ: The plan is to
get this out of here
but I tell you what...

there is no engine in the car.

-You didn't tell
me about what?

-So all you have got
to do is find yourself.

TIM: Zip it, stop talking
and let's get this
back to the workshop,

We haven't got time to hang
around chatting about that.

FUZZ: Seriously, no engine!

NARRATOR: Did Fuzz mention
that there's no engine?

GEMMA: Thanks very much.

TIM: Right, the next
time you will see it,
it'll be a runner.

NARRATOR: Back in 1962 it
would have cost you just under
two and a half thousand pounds

to have one of these on your
drive, back then the average
house price was only a couple

of hundred quid more so
it's no wonder these Italian
beauties are super rare.

FUZZ: Do you know
the last time I saw a
Lancia 1.8 boxer engine.

Do you know the
last time I saw one?

-Go on.

-Well, I never have.

-I walked into that.

NARRATOR: There
are only 64 surviving
Flavia on the UK roads.

So Tim's going to have his
work cut out finding parts...

including that missing engine.

Let's get it back to
the workshop and let's
get it looked at.

NARRATOR: And once up on
the lift it becomes obvious
that before he became ill,

owner Derrick was
once a very busy boy.

FUZZ: I tell you what Tim,
I always worry when a car
looks this good underneath.

There is always more
to it than meets the eye.

TIM: Right, really.

I tell you what Fuzz it's so
shiny I can see my face in it.

FUZZ: Yeah, but all
that glitters is not gold.

TIM: It's like a new car!

This car is a scam for you,
there is nothing to do.

FUZZ: Really Tim, it's not.

I'm worried about this car.

Seriously worried about it.

There's lots of
bodywork to be looked at.

-Looked at?

Oooh that takes a long time!

FUZZ: We need to unpick
everything that has been done
on it just to make sure it has

been done properly.

Every nut and bolt
has to be checked for
the correct tightness.

See all the
parts you've got as well.

Nicely catalogued so
you can stick them back on.

It's a little bit lumpy
it's had a few dents while
it's been in storage as well.

this paint is shrinking,
this is cellulose paint.

All is gonna
have to come off.

What about the
elephant in the room?

What about what should
be where my belly is?

FUZZ: Oh the engine?

Yes, but it's only a little
internet search away isn't it?

Answer me this question
then, who has got more work,
me or you?

-Got to be Fuzz.

It's one big
scam like I said.

You guys are on a set up.

Making a nice big three week
cup of tea, while Tim is out
on the road trying to find one

of these rocking
horse plop engines.

NARRATOR: Yes, Tim might think
Fuzz has got it easy, but
as they're about to find out,

with this car not
all is what it seems...

NARRATOR: Derrick's beloved
1967 Lancia Flavia is all over
the workshop floor in parts,

like a large and
expensive puzzle.

A cursory glance and what they
have looks to be in good nick,

so Fuzz's job
should be an easy one.

Without an engine this
jigsaw is missing its
most important piece.

TIM: Let's try to
be positive here.

We've a bonnet, we've got doors,

we've got grills,
we've got bumpers,

we've got seats, radiators.

FUZZ: We have got a lot
of parts here and
they're labelled.

That's a good sign.

I will get on with
cataloguing all this.

Anything missing.

I'll get onto you.

-I'm on the phone,
if you need me I'm in there.

-Let me know how it goes okay.
-I will do.

NARRATOR: While Tim starts
his mission impossible...

TIM: Hi, can I order some
parts for my Lancia please.

It's a Flavia, 1967.

NARRATOR: Fuzz has got
plenty to keep him busy.

Having already found that
the wrong paint was used to
prime the panels Fuzz'll

have to give the whole bodywork
a thorough inspection...

After three decades off the
road it'd be reckless not to
replace those ancient

brake pipes and, of course,
the "Big One" Tim has to find a
replacement engine for a

50 year old motor that wasn't
exactly thick on the ground
even in it's heyday...

(inaudible)

-I need an engine.

LORNA (over phone): We don't
often get asked for Flavia
engines as most people

already have them in their
car and don't need another one.

-Yeah, yeah, this is
not going well at all.

NARRATOR: Lancia
developed a state of the
art engine for the Flavia,

an aluminum push rod flat
four, but by 1976 technology
had moved on and when the

Flavia went out of
production the Lancia
flat four went with it,

consigned to
the history books.

Meaning that original
Flavia engines are
a rare thing indeed.

TIM: Italy, I am
beginning to get desperate now.

(speaking Italian).

Hi, I need some parts
for a Lancia Flavia 1967.

(hangs up).

What did I say wrong?

This is rapidly
becoming a nightmare.

NARRATOR: Getting an original
Lancia flat four, is going to
take a lot more than a quick

click and collect.

Fuzz thought that getting this
already primed car prepped and
ready to re-build seemed too

good to be true, and it
looks like he might be right.

FUZZ: I never like seeing
bits of trim covering
structural joints,

and here we have a
screwed together sill section.

Up there there's
expanding foam.

Probably put in there
to keep out the moisture.

NARRATOR: Finding pot rivets
along what should be one
of the strongest sections

of the car sets
off alarm bells.

FUZZ: All of this box
section along here should
be welded and strong.

It should be part
of the structure.

NARRATOR: Fuzz has found
that the rivets aren't
reinforcing a weld,

they've been
used instead of one.

If this car is involved
in an accident this
will just spilt apart,

there no integrity
to it whatsoever.

This car's a death trap.

NARRATOR: The Flavia is
built with a monocoque body.

Like an egg it's strength
comes from the structure
of its one piece shell,

but this
egg's been cracked.

Now Fuzz has to fix it.

FUZZ: I've got to get
rid of the expanding
foam from out the sill.

If I don't as soon as we
start welding it's gonna
go up like a torch.

So what I've done is welded
bars across the door apertures.

Just to make sure that
everything is kept braced and
in the correct position.

When we start chopping into
these sills we could take all
of the strength out of the

structure of the car
and it could flop around
like a little rag doll.

NARRATOR: That turns
out to be a wise move as what
should be solid welded parts

are peeling
away like banana skins.

At some point in its history
this car has been botched...

badly.

FUZZ: This outer section
of the floor is completely
rotten along the edge.

NARRATOR: Fuzz is shocked
at just how bad Derricks
car is turning out to be.

FUZZ: Come on!

NARRATOR: It looks like both
the lads are really are going
to have their work cut out.

But when the going gets
tough the tough go driving...

TIM: This is great.

First time for both of us in
a Flavia lets have ten seconds
of just thinking about it

and then my
assessment meets yours.

-It's refined.

It's the kind of car that
you drive wearing a suit.

-It is pretty.
-I love the wood
rimmed steering wheel,

that's great and
the attention to detail of

all the instruments they
are just absolutely spot on.

NARRATOR: This
unmistakably Italian coupe
isn't just a pretty face.

It's 1.8 liter flat-four
fuel-injected engine
produces a bolt-straining

91 break horse power,
allowing the Flavia to
get from naught to 60

in a smidgen over 13 seconds.

Look at the sun visors,
the headlining, all of
the bits of trim,

everything's dainty
and sort of polite.

NARRATOR: By chance
Fuzz finds today's route
is on his home turf.

I'm a Brummy, I was
born a mile up the road.

NARRATOR: So when he finds
himself driving past
somewhere he used to work...

FUZZ: My first days
work here, ever.

NARRATOR: Fuzz can't
resist popping in to see what

his old boss thinks
of his flashy new ride.

NARRATOR: At the tender
age of 16 Fuzz started his

working life as an
apprentice bus mechanic.

FUZZ: Now this guy, I used
to be his apprentice, when
I was just a little lad,

this is Ian.

Is this car really stylish
or is it just alright?

-I'll have to see what it is.

(inaudible)

-Bring it back round
for the verdict, give
us a mark out of ten.

-I would say about 9.
-9, 9?

NARRATOR: If they ever
want their Lancia to be a '9'

then they need
to get back to work...

NARRATOR: The main problem
with Derricks Flavia is it's

missing rare engine,

but while Tim should
be chasing one down,

he seems more keen
trying out a new blag.

TIM: Right, now I have
come up with a cunning plan.

Not only a way of getting
wicked discount off these, I
am on my way to get brake lines

for the Lancia and we
do not have a lot of time,

but also a way of making a
company work really quickly.

What we do is
I travel the country checking
how quick manufactures

make certain things.

-Right.

-Two companies go head to
head to challenge each other

to see if they can beat them,

so like yesterday I was with a
golf ball manufacture company
and I timed them and there is

another company going
head to head and the same
day I was with a company

that made staplers.

And they make them
in a certain time and then
we find someone else and

they try to beat them.

-And what do we win?

-A certificate from
mycompanyisfasterthanyours.org.
-Framed?

-Absolutely.

NARRATOR: It looks like
he's taken the bait...

Back at the workshop though it
turns out there's now so much

of Derricks car needs
replacing that Fuzz is

having to use donor parts.

FUZZ: This is a job
that's not going to end.

We've had to tack on a sill
here because what we have
had to do is use the sills

from an MGB.

So that is a good get
out of jail free card
if you see what I mean.

NARRATOR: The sills are
fixed but there's more
nasty surprises...

FUZZ: It's fatigued.

NARRATOR: Getting a
replacement for this fractured
suspension mount won't be a

problem, but Fuzz is finding
this car is like an onion: the
more layers he pulls off the

more it makes him want to cry.

But he could be cheered
to know that at least
Tim scheme seems to be going

according to plan...

-This is Tim from...

-Don't worry about
it, it's a long name.

-And we need to make a
Lancia Flavia brake pipe set.
-OK.

-Against the clock,
is that alright?

OK.

-On your marks, get set,
and because I like you guys

need to make all these pipes.

-So these are all different
lengths for each specific car.

NARRATOR: Because these are
the pipes that carry the
hydraulic fluid from the

master cylinder to each of
the brake calipers they'll
need to be accurate as

well as fast.

TIM: 45 inches,
50 inches, go!

Is that the lot?

-That's the lot.
-Like a ninja.

would be well impressed.

Stop the clock.

-There you go.

TIM: Look at this.

That is insane...

3 minutes and 13 seconds.

You've beaten the other
guys by 100th of a second.

NARRATOR: Tim's fake
Certificate comes with a photo
it's a good job this firm

specializes in
brakes not photography.

Proof, if any were needed,
that not all awards are
worth the paper

they're printed on...

So, good news for Tim but
back at the workshop things
aren't exactly going to plan.

FUZZ: We've got a small
problem with the gearbox.

We can't appear to select a
ratio with the gearstick.

NARRATOR: So while the rest
of the workshop gets on with
tackling the bodywork Fuzz and

workshop Phil get to
grips with the gearbox...

FUZZ: There we are.

So what do you reckon we
will find when we get in here?

Do you think it will be
a selector problem or do you
think it will go deeper than

that, more serious?

-I think that it's
Christmas-crackered to be
quite honest with you.

-Is that right?
-Yes.

We well may be able to
rebuild it, but these aren't
going to be ten a penny.

Finding spares for it is going
to be problematic isn't it?

NARRATOR: While Tim's hours
on the internet still haven't
help them find him that

desperately needed Flavia
engine they have turned up a
goldmine of other rare parts

just a two hour drive away...

TIM: Wow, look at this lot!

No way, Lancia fan, hello.

-Oh hi
-Wow, what a
collection of cars.

The Flamina Sport, that
is a stunning looking car.

-It's lovely, lovely shape.
-Gorgeous car isn't it?

NARRATOR: Designed by Zegato
the people responsible for
the look of some of the more

iconic Aston Martins.

This sort of style
doesn't come cheap.

DERRICK: One sold in Europe
this year for 140,000
as a restoration project.

TIM: That needed restoring?

-That needed restoring.

TIM: And that is pretty mint.

NARRATOR: "Pretty mint" isn't
a phrase that could be used
for our Lancia's gearbox,

luckily resurrecting 60's
parts is Fuzz's specialty...

FUZZ: The selector
will move across the rails
but I can't actually get

it into any gears.

NARRATOR: A stuck bolt seems
to be the root of the problem.

FUZZ: Now, this is
absolutely seized solid,

so the idea is to heat
this up to an orange

glowing color that should mean
that they'll be sufficient
heat in order for me

to free this bolt off.

This is known as the
Hot Spanner and it helps to
loosen tight bolts.

NARRATOR: Speaking of
'tight' back in Leicestershire
Tim's pushing hard

for some discount spares...

MAN: I think that this is
what you have come for.

-Wow, I'm in heaven.

Do you have air
filters, oil filters?

-I just happen to
have a spare one that
I am not going to use.

-That's the shape.
-That'll fit our car.
-Yeah.

-And whose is that?
-That is mine.
-And whose is that?

-That's yours.

FUZZ: OK, alright, here we go.

Movement!

First, second, third,
forth, reverse.

Four forward
gears, one reverse.

That is all there are in the
box and we've got the lot.

Job done.

NARRATOR: Now all they need
is an engine to attach that
gearbox to and they'd really

be getting somewhere...

But while Tim hasn't got
that yet he has blagged an
armful of rare spares...

TIM: I love your car.

I don't know much about it.

It's one of the hill
climbers isn't it?

MAN: That's right.

It's a Lancia Fulvia
Competitsioni.

There were about two
dozen maybe 30 built by
Zigarto for competition.

-I have never been in
one of those actually.

-Well I suppose they
are so rare that not
many people have.

-No, I didn't know where we were
here, so I parked the car up

that I came here in,

and I've got to
carry all this lot.

It's about
three miles up the road.

Would you mind
dropping me off?

-It's a bit noisy
but you're welcome.

TIM: Go on,
give it some beans!

Oh listen to that!

I like that, it's a
hill climber right,

so it's stripped of
anything it didn't need.

Anything that makes any sort
of comfort has gone hasn't
it, apart from the seats.

-That's right, absolutely.
-What's it like to drive?

-It has
delightful road manners.

-Is your wife a
huge fan of this car?

-No, definitely not.
-No hesitation there.

-Oh, no.
-Why not?

-I think she thinks it
is a bit barbaric really.

We're actually here at
my car, it's that purple one

so if you could pull up behind
that, that would be fantastic.

-We're back at Dave's.
-What?

-We're back at Dave's!
-Oh, you're joking!

NARRATOR: Well Tim might have
got a ride in a rare classic,
and an armful of Lancia parts.

but back at the workshop
there's still a gaping
hole in their rebuild...

a gaping Lancia flat-four
shaped hole and the time
for Tim to find

an engine is
rapidly ebbing away.

FUZZ: Right, here we go.

NARRATOR: Two weeks ago the
lads excavated an ultra-rare
classic buried under a

mountain of junk...

FUZZ: This isn't a car,
this is a shed...

NARRATOR: This beautiful coupe
belongs to Lancia-mad Derrick,
a man whose battles with ME

have ravaged his life,
and meant his Flavia
has been left in re-build

limbo for decades...

I can hardly hold a screwdriver
straight these days so...

NARRATOR: It looked like an
easy-job for Fuzz but there
was more to this motor than

met the eye...

FUZZ: This cars a death trap.

NARRATOR: Or rather,
a lot less...

-I need an engine.
-Right.

NARRATOR: After days calling
around everyone and anyone he
can think of Tim's still no

closer to getting
that ultra rare engine...

But he did manage to
trick his way into getting

new break-pipes made
at break-neck speed...

And, the rotten sills
have been chopped and changed.

It's taken dozens of man
hours to get the bodywork
back to factory spec.

Although to the untrained
eye it doesn't look
hugely different to when

they picked it up.

So time to see
if Derrick's nearest and
dearest notice the change,

as wife Lorna and daughter
Gemma have turned up to see

how the lads have
been getting on...

TIM: No peeking.

3, 2, 1, there it is.

First impressions?

-I was expecting it to be red.
-Really?

NARRATOR: One of the reasons
progress has been slow is
because Fuzz stumbled upon

some 'unorthodox' materials.

TIM: Exhibit A.

-Here we have one of the
outriggers that's
holding the floor up.

-I can't believe that my
husband would do that.

-We think you planted it.

-It doesn't fit Derricks
image, if Derrick washes
up it's perfection.

-You planted it.
-I don't know
whether it was him.

It gets better.

LORNA: Well it must have
been before he had it.

TIM: Yes, it must.

Look at exhibit B.

It's a wheel arch and all
the muck and dirt hits this.

But they're not made of that.

NARRATOR: There's flimsy
plastic files where
there should be

factory made wheel arches.

Where could they
possibly have come from?

TIM: So when you were
a kid and you get a book
these were the front cover.

-They were mine.
-Were they?

NARRATOR: So the work's
a lot further behind than
the ladies

might have imagined;

but Fuzz has a

So I wondered if you have won
a pampering day for mum,

where he gets picked
up in a nice car.

-Yeah, he'll think

NARRATOR: Yes, the trap's been
set and everything's booked.

In just a few days' time,
Derrick thinks he'll be taking
his wife to a posh hotel.

But little does he know,
it's not her who'll
be getting a make-over,

but his beloved car.

LORNA: I just can't
believe that you are going
to do it, even if he works

24 hours a day.

NARRATOR: It's understandable
that Lorna thinks they won't
make it and if Tim can't track

down an engine she'll be
right, but while the car might
looks the same now as it did

when they picked it
up, it's actually in a
very different place.

FUZZ: Now Derrick had
got quite a long way with
preparing this car for paint

but what he had used
was cellulose based paint.

Now those react with
the modern day paint
and they all crinkle up.

NARRATOR: So those
poorly primed panels
have been stripped,

filled and rubbed down.

And the original Pininfarina
lines are now as smooth as
they were always meant to be.

FUZZ: This car is almost
ready to go in the spray
booth and it's going to look

absolutely amazing.

Promise you.

NARRATOR: It takes hours to
properly prep a car for the
spray booth and all that time

Tim's been
on the internet getting
increasingly desperate.

He's left the engine to
the last minute, and he's
running out of options.

-Why on earth did
we ever take this?

-How is it going,
got it sorted?

NARRATOR: But he may
have had a breakthrough...

TIM: There's this guy in
Amsterdam who apparently may
have the right engine.

FUZZ: Right ok,
well go to Amsterdam.

-Why are you sitting here?
-Um, toothbrush, pants...

-I don't care if you don't
have pants, turn them inside
out and wear them tomorrow.

NARRATOR: While Tim heads
for mainland Europe in
the workshop the Lancia's

makeover continues apace...

With the bodywork prepped
the actual transformation
is pretty speedy.

First a black basecoat is
applied, which means when the
deep red top coat goes on it

has a real luster and it
isn't long before this elegant
coupe is looking as sharp

as an Italian suit.

NARRATOR: Tim's in The
Netherlands to secure the rare

Lancia flat-four that
may save their project.

If he fails the car
won't be finished in time.

TIM: If I don't make it
back with this engine then
there's no point in making

it back at all.

There's no
point going home.

I have had to lie to this guy
I'm going to meet because, if
he knows I have had driven for

eight hours and 49 minutes now
to come and get this engine
then he can name his price,

I need to get my
composure, calm, cool.

Not bothered
about this engine.

-Hello Tim.
-Paul isn't it?

Let's get this engine.

I am in a bit of a rush
as I don't want to hit
the traffic on way back.

NARRATOR: With the clock
against him Tim needs to get
in and out with the engine

as quickly as possible.

-Where is it?

PAUL: Look this is

NARRATOR: Paul
though has other ideas.

PAUL: This of course has
the V4 engine in it,
very powerful.

NARRATOR: For once Tim won't
be distracted from his quest.

-Stunning, actually,
genuinely stunning.

NARRATOR: And there she is...

All 1800cc's the Lancia
flat four boxer engine
that Tims been pulling his

hair out trying to find.

So can he keep his cool...

PAUL: With a balanced
crankshaft, new pistons,

two liter heads
like in this period.

NARRATOR: This is
the precision heart their
project has been missing.

TIM: Well I mean,
we could chuck that one
in for the right price.

TIM: I've been in the car
for like half an hour
which shows I'm interested.

FUZZ: OK, OK I can hear you.

TIM: Yes,
guess who's is back!

You thought
I was fired right?

-I'm still here.
-Come on, let's get it in.

NARRATOR: They're
celebrating now but they've
got all whole weeks work

to fit into 48 hours...

TIM: We're back in business!

NARRATOR: Next morning
at the workshop things
are at fever pitch...

now they have all the parts
they need, but that doesn't
mean getting it together is

going to be a
walk in the park.

FUZZ: We have got thousands
of bits to put back together
but half of them we don't know

where they go.

But do you know what Jan?

I am going to
leave that with you.

Jan: Thank you kind sir.

NARRATOR: There's
a myriad of little jobs to
do but the big one is the

same as always been...

they need to get the
heart back into this car.

FUZZ: Come on then PJ.

The engine and gearbox has to
be fitted into the sub-frame
before the whole thing

is put into the car.

Take the strain.

NARRATOR: With the engine
mounted ahead of the front
wheels it is a hell of a job

to get the lump and
all it's auxiliaries
squeezed back home.

FUZZ: Just need a few
nuts and bolts and we
can put it all together,

then we can put
it into the car.

And we will have almost
a complete Lancia, hurray!

NARRATOR: With one day left,
the clock's ticking, and the
list of things still to do is

daunting; the seats
need to be put in, the
chrome-work reattached,

but the lad's biggest worry
is still under the bonnet...

-It's almost if it's
missing a shim or something.

-We're going to have to go
packing out the clutch cover.
-We haven't got time for this.

FUZZ: We've got to do it...

surgery on the Lancia.

That is all that we can do, so,
I know what I'm going to need,

let me go and find it.

NARRATOR: The engine works,
and so does the gearbox.

The only trouble
is that the clutch that
sits between them doesn't,

and no clutch,
means no car.

TIM: When you push the
clutch down there it
frees it up, like that,

look, that's free now and
it's loose inside there,

but unfortunately it's not quite
loose enough to change gear,

and that is how
fine-tuned cars are.

I cannot tell you, I
cannot put into words just

how stressed everybody
is here, right now.

Look at Fuzz's face,
check Fuzz's face out.

Everyone's in trouble.

NARRATOR: But after 35 years
in the game Fuzz has plenty of

mechanical work around
up his sleeve and he
thinks he may have

a bespoke solution.

What I have had to do is
make up some little spacers to

put behind the clutch cover,

now that is not exactly
ideal but it has got us out of
trouble and it will be secure.

So at last we can get
this car back together,
get it finished and done.

It's always a good sign
when the hub caps go on.

NARRATOR: Will
Fuzz's fix have worked?

With Just hours
until they're due to reunite
Derrick with his beloved car

they'll have to hope so...

-Right, windscreen
wipers and that's me
pretty much done dude.

-Ok I'm just going
to fit the grill.

Flavia coupe repaired,
re-sprayed and resurrected.

completely unrecognizable.

I don't remember it
looking like a car.

-Really, neither do we,
for a long time.

It looks amazing, he's
going to be blown away,

TIM: Now we need

NARRATOR: With the
family hidden away and
the car put under cover,

right on time Derrick
arrives at the Hall with wife
Lorna who is in on the scam,

he's expecting a day of
relaxation, but he'd probably
feel a lot more tense if he

knew we'd covered the
hotel in secret cameras
tracking his movements.

With the couple in place it's
time for Tim to transform into
Gordon and put his convoluted

plan into action.

-Roll one, take three.

-Welcome to another

NARRATOR: It's showtime!

the crew's all set and the
presenter's keen to get going,

TIM: I just think it make

Hi, we are filming an
art program outside...

NARRATOR: Let's hope that
Derrick's a dab hand with a
brush as he's been roped in to

fill the empty easel.

TIM: Hi there, would
you like to take a seat,
are you the late ones?

-No they are very
kindly standing in.
-Sorry.

NARRATOR: With so
much going on, the
car under its covers,

has become completely
invisible to Derrick.

TIM: So, let me explain
what is happening here.

Basically, we're
painting from memory.

Can you paint?

-No, only walls...

NARRATOR: Derrick may not be
a master at the canvas, but
today that hardly matters.

TIM: Now everyone has the
ability to paint from memory

so I'd like you all
to take part in this at home.

I'm going to
show you an object.

Let's choose,
contestant number 1,

I'm going to show you an
object for two seconds

and I would like you to
continue to paint it, okay?

Ok, go ahead and paint that.

NARRATOR: Next up
is Derrick and 'Gordon' has
found him something slightly

larger to paint.

TIM: The way the medulla
inside the brain communicates
with the cortex actually the

larger the object, the more
time you need to look at it.

So Derrick, let's commit
this next image to your memory.

Okay, so, you're going to be
drawing a car okay, and you'll

have a slightly longer

period of time to have a
look at this vehicle and then

I would like
you to try and draw it.

Remember the color, the
name, the manufacturer,
the color of the seats,

as much as you can.

Here we go, you ready to play?

NARRATOR: It takes
a few seconds for the penny
to drop but as a Car SOS

fan he soon twigs on.

-Do you recognize this car?
-Surprise!

-This doesn't happen,
this is not true.

-I can feel you shaking.
-It's crazy, it's crazy.

NARRATOR: It's no wonder that
Derrick's speechless, the last
time he saw his beloved Flavia

it was a pile of primed-parts
on his garage floor.

-Is there an engine in it?
-There is an engine, yeah.

-Give him a round
of applause, guys.

-I tell you what we had our
work cut out with this car.
-You have?

I'd done most of it!

(laughter).

NARRATOR: Oh Derrick,
if only you knew...

When the lads first started
this project there where 64
Flavia coupes still on the

UK roads, now they can add
one more to that rare-roster.

After three weeks of welding,
painting and polishing the
pinifarina bodywork once again

looks as sharp
as it is strong...

Underneath new pipes and
a rust-resistant belly mean
the Lancia will be around for

years to come.

And, over 30 years since it
was last on the road this
Italian stallion is full of

heart and ready to
gallop once more.

-What does this
car mean to you?

-It is something else,
when things were good.

60s, 70s, good times.

-And this car
represents those times.

-Yes, everything
else has gone now.

-How do you feel about the fact
we've done the car for you?

-I think you guys are bloody
magic, I really do, you are
just unbelievable people.

-Well do you know what?

Your family think you're
bloody magic, and you Derrick,

have been car SOS'd.

DERRICK: Thank you very
much indeed, thank you.

TIM: You deserve it.
