the boys are off

to the south coast
in Brighton.

But the sea air
seems to be getting to Tim.

You're excited, aren't you?

Something about your demeanor
that tells me you are excited.

What is it, Tim?
Come on, let it out.

The Audi Quattro Turbo!

My all-time favorite car,
the one that got away.

And do you know what?
I used to drive one regularly.

But you didn't drive one,
did you?

Yes, I really did.

-UR?
-Yes, that's right, the UR.

That's what they were called,
the "U-R."

So, for me, personally,
this is a huge deal.

NARRATOR: Yes, the boys
might well be in high spirits,

because back in the '80s,

the Audi UR-Quattro's
ruled the roost.

A four-wheel drive
high performance car

became a world beater
on the rally circuits,

and a hit
in the car showrooms.

Although having been
under a damp cover

for over 10 years,

the one the boys
are about to pick up

is more dowdy than Audi.

It belongs to Barry,
who bought it

as a restoration job,

but the amount of work
needed on the car,

plus a tragic spate
of ill health

have conspired to leave Barry
pretty much housebound,

and his dream car missing
its Vorsprung durch Technik.

But around the corner,

at his girlfriend
Helen's house...

-Hello?
-Oh, hiya! Hello, I'm Helen.

-Nice to meet you.
-Fuzz.

...plans are afoot
to change all that...

Bobby, Charlie.

...as Helen,
Barry's daughter Charlie,

and best mate Bobby

have a secret liaison
with Tim and Fuzz.

They are hoping
a rejuvenated Quattro

will bring Barry
a new lease of life.

Although getting the car away

from under Barry's nose
is not going to be easy.

Now, first of all, how is he?

-He's okay.
-Does he suspect anything?

-Oh, absolutely not, no.
-Not as far as I know.

-Follow this one, Fuzz.
-Right, okay, I'm with you.

-This is your house, Helen?
-Yes, it is.

-Barry lives up the road?
-Yes, he does.

He is the biggest fan
of the show.

Brilliant, that's good.

So we can't go
and pick the car up.

-So here's the plan.
-Yeah.

-You go with Bob.
-Yep.

Take one of the guys
from the crew.

Good idea.

-You stay in the distance.
-Gotcha.

Look through the window
of the car.

Head down.

Oversee the removal of the car.

Totally.

We stay here working
very hard on pressing

the knob on the kettle
and drinking cups of tea

and eating slices of cake
and stuff like that.

Yes, as per usual,
as per usual.

All right, then.

Okay, well,
let's go and take a look.

What are you still here for?

All right. We're going.

NARRATOR: So, the plan
to snatch Barry's car away

goes into action.

He's been suffering
from a debilitating

lung disease
for the last few years,

and sadly it's getting worse.

Any plans he had
to restore his Audi

are now impossible,

so he's reluctantly agreed
to the unimaginable,

giving his beloved car
to his best friend.

Or at least that's what
he thinks he's doing.

In fact, it's all part
of our cunning plan.

So, Barry is not going
to be surprised

when Bobby and our
transport manager, Tom,

turn up to take his Audi away.

All right, Tom?
This is Baz.

But what he doesn't know
is that his every move

is being watched
from across the road.

I'm going to sneak
my head back a little bit,

'cause I don't want him
to see.

He's talking to the guy
from the crew.

Oh,
he's looking directly at me.

(laughs)
I can't move.

So, what's the story
with this beast?

Well, it's just...
I've either had the money

or not the time,

and not the time
and then no money.

And now, I just--

There's no way,
I'm gonna ever restore it,

'cause I haven't got the energy
levels to do it anymore.

Go on, get the tarpaulin off
and let's have a look at it.

That's it. Look at that.

That is what I call a car.

NARRATOR: Yes, and a
lot of UR-Quattro lover's

would agree with you.

It debuted
at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show,

with a 2,144cc turbocharged
five-cylinder engine.

Nought to sixty
in about seven seconds,

and a claimed top speed
of 137 mph.

However,
what most impressed critics

was the Audi's tenacious
road holding.

It crushed the opposition

at the World Rally
Championships

with it's
all-wheel-drive traction,

making it possible
to push the Quattro

in ways that would've
been inconceivable

in most two-wheel-drive
vehicles.

This is a car that
certainly earned its place

in motoring history.

So, why on earth
has Barry allowed his one

to fall into such
a bad state of repair?

So, tell me a bit about Barry.

What--
Does he collect cars?

He's dragged cars
from people's gardens

for many, many years.

-Legally?
-Yes!

(laughing)

-Right. Right, okay.
-Yes, yes, yes.

So, he is a car fiend,
he loves cars?

-Absolutely.
-Yeah.

He gets a lot of satisfaction

of seeing them
done up and finished.

-Right, for who?
-Other people.

-Not for him?
-No.

Surely he must've been
talking about wanting

to get round to that Audi.

It makes him sad.

He looks at it
out of the window

and just goes, "Oh,
I wish I could do my car."

You know,
I've always wanted one,

ever since I was a kid.

You know,
when they first came out,

"Gotta have a Quattro Turbo."

(chuckles)

What does the car
mean to him?

The Audi Quattro is the one car
that he always wanted to drive

and really never thought
it was gonna happen to him.

He still thinks
it's never going to happen,

because it's still sitting
on the drive.

NARRATOR: Well,
Barry is obviously

a dyed-in-the-wool
petrol head

who is no stranger
to a restoration or two.

So, why is he in need
of the Car SOS treatment?

Barry was diagnosed

two years ago
with mesothelioma,

which is
an asbestos-related cancer.

It wasn't diagnosed
for several years,

and when it was...

he was rushed
into Guy's Hospital,

had radical surgery,

and then he had
some pretty vicious

chemotherapy for six months.

I thought I'd stop it
before I pass out.

-I can't do that.
-Is that right?

Yeah.

What, have you had, uh,
work done?

Yeah, they cut
the chest lining out.

So I've got, like,
a 12-inch cut between me ribs.

I lost all me strength.

When I first came out
of hospital,

I know it's two years ago now.

I couldn't even lift
the kettle up.

-Really?
-Yeah.

I thought it'd get easier,
but it doesn't.

He was in remission
for 14 months,

and now the cancer is back.

So, that must be devastating.
How's he coping with it?

Not good.

He has good days and bad days.

He is going through
clinical trials at the moment.

He's having some pretty
awful side effects,

which means
he can't go very far.

He doesn't move much
from the house.

How long has Barry been given?
It's a tough question to ask.

The truth is
he should be dead.

I mean,
he shouldn't be alive now.

He's living on borrowed time.

What do you think
doing the car up

would mean to your dad?

Well, it's his ultimate dream
to get that car on the road.

Really feel for the guy.

He thinks
he's just given his car away.

The car is being
picked up now, hopefully,

if we're going to do it up,

we are going
to give it back to him.

And I want to see
the biggest smile

on both of your faces.

-Oh, yeah. There will be.

-Yeah, absolutely.

Okay, then, that's a given.

NARRATOR: No sooner is the car
away from Barry's house,

then Fuzz, who's been itching
to get his hands on it,

makes a shocking discovery.

I can see
one problem for a start,

there's nothing in there.

No cylinder head,
only half an engine.

I think
you're going to need it.

NARRATOR: Yes, luck is exactly
what they'll need,

as with half an engine
it could be twice

the amount of work.

So, as soon
as Tim is loaded up,

it's off
to the Car SOS workshop.

This is my favorite bit
of the day.

(chuckles)

The calm before the storm,
Fuzz.

There is going to be
a storm with that car.

There's loads of parts missing

and they're all going
to be hard to get a hold of.

Yeah, but
they are a gorgeous family

and we are doing it for them.

Exactly.

So let's get it back
and let's get it sorted,

because
time is of the essence.

Absolutely.

NARRATOR:
And once back at base,

it's time to find out,
how bad things really are.

Look at the state of this.

It's like, it's been
dragged out of a canal.

Okay, so it's rusty,

it's been standing
in the damp for a long time.

NARRATOR:
And under the bonnet's

not much better,
with the cylinder head,

turbo unit and fuel injectors

and pretty much
all the other ancillary

engine parts missing.

Okay, so it all looks

pretty tired in here,
doesn't it?

-What's that?
-(Fuzz chuckles)

That's the fastest snail
in the land.

We're going to keep that.

That is a reminder
of just how bad this car is.

NARRATOR:
And what about the car's

30-year-old interior?

What's it like in there, Tim?

-First impressions are moldy.
-Yeah.

But actually the bolsters
on the seats aren't torn,

which would've meant replacing,

so we can possibly
get this cleaned.

It is in surprisingly
good shape.

Look at it.

It's a full,
four-seater world-beater.

It's brilliant.

NARRATOR: Well,
enjoy the moment

while you can, guys,

because with just
three working weeks

till this rusting
heap goes back,

you certainly can't afford
to go at a snail's pace.

The first inspection
of Barry's 1984 Audi Quattro

has not come up
with great results.

This car is incredibly decayed,
isn't it?

A massive amount of work.

NARRATOR: The car has been
sitting for so long,

it's suffering
from terminal rust.

So, it's pretty much
a total rebuild

from the scuffed
and tatty wheels,

all the way up
to the leaky old sunroof.

The interior
is at least intact,

but suffering
from a severe case of mold,

so the seats
will need to come out

and be cleaned.

The biggest job, by far,
is the engine,

or more to the point,
the half of an engine,

and that has instantly become,
a source of great debate.

Fuzz, so what is the plan
with the old lump?

Right, I think
that we should try

and save this lump

because
this is an original block.

Yeah.

We need this block
to stay with this car.

And I think Barry will be
very cheesed off

if we went with anything
that was different.

I agree.
I think we should scrap it.

I agree with you.

No, no, no, no, no.
We save this one.

Yeah, I agree,
save it for the scrap yard.

No, no, no.

Because that is going
to need boring out,

that's going to need
new pistons, the lot.

I think
we really need to save it.

Right, let's turn it over.
Let's see if it even moves.

Is it seized or is it not?

-Come on, Phil.
-There we are.

-Look at that. You see?

Yeah, it's coming up
and down all right.

That's perfectly okay.

It's so gorgeous seeing it
go up and down. Look at that.

Do you know what that does?
Do you know how it works?

Why don't you tell us?

NARRATOR: Uh-oh, here we go.

What happens is,
a mixture of air,

there's air in here now,

and vapor from petrol
goes in there together,

mixed up
in a perfect mixture.

And then, just when
it's under the most pressed

by the piston coming up,
and it's squeezed,

it's lit...
(imitates fire lighting)

...by the spark plug
and it expands, it grows.

When it explodes
and pushes the piston down,

another one pushes
the piston down,

and another one pushes
the piston down.

And that goes round the crank
in a circular motion,

goes to the gearbox
and you have a rolling car.

I think what he's trying
to say, Phil, is,

"Suck, squeeze, bang, blow."

NARRATOR: Well, whether or
not they're going to be able

to save
what's left of Barry's engine,

is going to come down
to getting hold of the parts.

Hello, mate, hi,
I need some parts

for an Audi 80 UR, 1980.

MAN: (on phone)
We wouldn't keep those

in stock.

NARRATOR: Only just
under 11,500 UR-Quattro's

were ever made,

and as Tim is finding out,

even Audi spares specialists
are struggling to help.

So, how many parts
are available for the Audi,

for this UR that I need?

MAN: I wouldn't have a clue.

It's over 20 years old,
isn't it, this car?

I'm not going to let this
get me down

or wind me up at all.

It's fine, I'm going
to get every part I need.

I'm chilling. Totally calm.

Come on, then.

MAN: Most of the parts
won't be available now.

Right, tell me something
I don't know.

NARRATOR: Well,
if Tim is struggling already,

he's not going
to be too happy

with what Fuzz has discovered.

So we've found a whole heap
more of rust on this Audi.

This is what remains
of the rear bumper mount.

I mean, it's just
completely disintegrated.

Look at this. Grade A rot.

So, we're going to have
to find a replacement for this,

which may not be easy.

NARRATOR:
And the rot doesn't stop

at the bumper.

Even the car's
30-year-old petrol tank

is on its way out.

(clattering)

Hear that noise?

That is a whole heap of rust.

So, what we may have to do

is line the inside
of this tank,

which involves putting
a paint-like kind of mixture in

and eventually that solidifies,

which then means
there is no loose rust left

on the inside
of the petrol tank.

NARRATOR: Well, at least
that's one less part

for Tim to find.

And his other snippet
of good news

is that he's had
a bit of a lead on the engine.

Right, now,
I've got to be honest,

I am struggling
to get parts for the Quattro,

and it struck me.

Quattro Owners Club.

Why not?
Best place to go surely.

So, I've managed
to get in contact

with a guy called Phil

and I'm on my way now
to see what he's got

for a bit of arm-twisting.

Now, I wonder
if it could possibly be

that house with two sweet,
little Quattro's on the drive?

Look at the lines,
that's what it's all about.

These lines down here,
those two mean,

"I am a Quattro."

What a car.

-(laughs)

that makes them so amazing?

It's the build quality, really.
They sound like nothing else.

They handle really well.

for a car of their age.

Phil's car might go well...

back at the workshop

most certainly doesn't.

So, this looks like
it's actually been

in the seawater.

The discs
are really badly rusted,

as are the calipers.

In fact, everything
under here is starting to go.

The anti-roll bar.

So we're really going to have
to knuckle down on this car.

It's not looking that great.

Let's see, if we can
blast this caliper off.

(whirring)

Everything is rusted
so solidly on this caliper.

I'm going to use a breaker bar

of this magnitude
to get it off.

(grunts)

I think we're going
to face this all the way

through with this car.

NARRATOR: Back on the road,
and Tim has been way laid

by one element of the Quattro

that perhaps hasn't stood
the test of time,

it's talking dashboard.

NARRATOR: Now,
Tim might well be enjoying

his guided tour around
Quattro world,

but he mustn't forget
what he's here for.

The top half
of a 10-valve engine

and it looks like
he's come up trumps.

Oh, yes, wow.

That is the whole lump,
isn't it?

-Yep.
-Turbo and everything.

NARRATOR: Yes,
it's the answer

to all the boys' needs.

Time for Tim
to start that silver tongue.

Now, the thing is,
as a carman, Phil,

it's kind of sacrilege

for this thing
to be sitting here

with all its power...

Yeah.

...that it can unleash
on a car...

Mmm-hmm.

...and sitting here
not being used.

That really isn't very fair
on the engine.

So you want to buy

to be honest, Phil.

that is a result

that even
Tim wasn't expecting.

Fuzz is going to go nuts

when he sees,
I've got an engine.

That is a score. Get in there!

Shame Phil didn't have

a few more moving parts
lying around, too.

As it looks like
the boys might need some.

Now, this is
the front sub-assembly

from the Quattro.

It looks really rough.

I mean, we got loads
of rust over everything,

and yes, okay, so things,

like all the rubbers, etcetera
will need to be replaced.

But the bulk of this

is actually serviceable
and reusable.

So that's what we'll do.

We'll do a lot of cleaning up

and we'll get it back
to looking as good as new.

There are obviously
lots of leaks

over the gearbox,

so we'll replace
all the output seals there.

Although doing this
is going to be

a fair bit of hard work.

It's probably,
on this particular car,

going to be a lot easier
than finding replacement parts.

NARRATOR: Yes,
if the front assembly

could be salvaged,

it would save Tim
a lot of time.

Although, at the moment,

he's more interested
in showing off his spoils.

will still have to go off

to the specialist

where it will be
stripped down,

renovated, and used
for parts to salvage

what remains
of Barry's old engine.

Meanwhile, the schedule
is rapidly ebbing away,

so it's time
for the bodywork guys

to start laying
into the snoozy

Quattro's tired, old shell.

It's all hands on deck
to get the rust cut out,

the paintwork rubbed down
and ready for its respray.

And while all that's going on,

it's the perfect moment
for Tim and Fuzz

to take
a little research trip.

-Come on, Tim.

Welcome to the 1980s.

-That is gorgeous.
-Isn't it magnificent?

-Come on, mate.
-(chuckles)

(upbeat rock music)

This car slaps a huge grin
on your face, doesn't it?

-It does, yes.
-It's so cool.

NARRATOR:
The word "Quattro" derives

from the Italian word
for four.

But it wasn't
the four-wheel drive alone

that made the car special.

It was the first car
in the world

to mate all-wheel drive
with a turbocharged engine.

-(grunting)
-(laughs)

That's what it's about.

-Listen to that!
-(engine revs)

Fuzz, I love it.
I absolutely love it.

NARRATOR:
When they first came out,

the Quattro's cost
an eye-watering £14,500,

which was well over twice,
the average annual wage.

Nowadays, it's a classic

that has been
increasing in price.

A good condition,
used example

can set you back
upwards of £20,000.

It's a rally car,
it's a four-wheel drive,

it's amazing off the road,
on the road.

It's got four seats,

you can have your wife
and your kids in it.

If you want to drive it
like a rally car,

adjust the rear-view mirror
and you won't see them.

That's right. I mean,
really, it has everything.

It's so well-made,
the precision engineering.

Even by today's standards.

It's just tight.

NARRATOR: Yes,
production of the UR-Quattro

might've stopped in 1991,

but Audi's love affair
with four-wheel drive

performance cars
didn't end there.

Hey, hey,
how good was that, Timmy?

Wow, what a car.

But this, of course,
was where the big,

muscly four-wheel drive
coupes originated.

-Yeah, they did.
-Right here.

If it wasn't for those,
you wouldn't have that.

Yes, the RS monsters.

The RS4, the RS6
and now this one, the RS5.

I see you standing
on the driver's side.

-Really?
-Me with the keys, swapsies.

Let's go.

NARRATOR: The RS
was launched to mark

the 30th anniversary
of its celebrated ancestor.

Although this time,
with a 4.2,

444 brake horsepower
V8 engine,

taken straight
out of the Audi R8 supercar.

This car does 0 to 60
in around 4.5 seconds.

Yeah.

You can't,
like any classic car,

just put your foot
straight to the ground.

-You can't just do that, okay?
-Why not?

-Fuzz, seriously, mate.

NARRATOR: Set the car
to comfort mode,

for day-to-day driving,
but stick it in dynamic

and it's designed
to generate enough grip

around corners,
that it'll feel like,

the tarmac with it.

So, like its predecessor
was in its day,

the RS5 is very much
a driver's car,

rather than one
for a nervous passenger.

I'm not happy

You don't drive supercars
and the RS5 is a supercar.

There are no two ways about it.

so does a busy workshop.

A mounting pile of work
and a deadline

that is looming ever closer.

Tim and Fuzz have taken
on car-loving Barry's

1984 Audi Quattro Turbo.

Look at that.
That is what I call a car.

When they picked it up,
it was a rotting heap

with half a snail
infested engine.

To its owner, it's the car

he'd always dreamed
of driving.

You know,
I've always wanted one,

ever since I was a kid.

You know,

But now suffering
from an incurable

form of lung cancer,

he knows he'll never
have the energy

to fulfill his dream.

Since stealing it away,

the boys have found
the car so rotten,

that just about
every moving part

has had to be stripped off.

This car is absolutely
chock-full of crispy,

horrible rust.

NARRATOR:
And as for the interior,

it was covered in mold,

but Tim has a plan
to get it all sorted out.

Tell me this, how can you get
the seats for the Audi,

which are in the back
of the pickup here,

get them clean,

get them renovated
for virtually nothing,

using one of these,
a mushroom?

if I can take a look-see
what's underneath.

rid of the clip there

and it should slide
back and out.

I can see rust
already actually.

As you can see,
it's a bit rusty under there,

but actually it's not as bad

as I thought
it was going to be.

So, we've got
a bit of movement,

but not an awful lot.

to an emergency service?

Studebaker, fire engine,
built in 1950.

NARRATOR: Yes, this 1950s
American fire engine

is thought to be the only one
of its kind in Britain.

Brought over from the U.S.

to go on display
inside a pizzeria,

it's now a hit on
the classic car show circuit.

Although it does have
a bit of a problem.

-I've got smelling of fuel.

Now, I've had
the fuel pump off.

And it's an old lorry tank
that we put in.

on the replacement tank,

and that's that job
out of the way.

Yeah, so we fitted
a marine tank

out of a small boat, there.

And we've also fitted
an electric fuel pump.

NARRATOR: Good to see
the old boneshaker, though.

If only the Audi Quattro
was so simple.

Back at the wheel restorers,

and Tim is enjoying
a private guided tour.

Right,
so this is diamond cutting?

This is for an alloy wheel
that's got a super shiny front?

That's the one.

So what it does then is,
you give it the alloy wheel

with the dents
in the top of it,

and then you do
a profile of the shape

of that wheel, a contour.

That's right, yeah.

And then you shift it in
a millimeter or whatever it is.

Yeah,
we just keep bringing it in

until we cut
all the damage out.

Oh, no way, so this is
the powder coating process?

-So you earth the wheel...
-Yeah.

...and you positively charge
the particles of powder...

Yeah.

...and then they adhere
for that reason,

is that why they stick?

It basically causes the dust
to be attracted to the metal,

so you get maximum coverage.

It completely envelopes
the wheel.

-It's super quick, isn't it?
-Yeah.

NARRATOR:
Tour over and it immediately

becomes clear why Tim brought
a family of snails.

It's not really me
that wants the discount.

Okay, who is it then?

Yes, gastropods drive
a really hard bargain.

was rotting away
under a damp car cover,

with little hope
of ever getting on the road.

For its car-mad owner,

it had become
one restoration too far.

Now its decaying bodywork
has been transformed,

the rust-stained paint
is at last gleaming.

The corroded wheels have been
immaculately refurbished.

The old mildew-ridden interior
is now as new.

And where a few days ago,
there was an obsolete engine,

there is now
the turbo charged power house

this car was always
meant to have.

For Barry, this really
is a dream come true.

being honest,
