isn't it?

NARRATOR: This time
a '90s Japanese supercar

blows the cobwebs
right out of the workshop.

-Massive impact
in the nearside front.
-Bang.

NARRATOR: It's a legend
on four wheels
that impresses the boys.

Yes, please.
An absolute work of '90s art.
Look at that.

NARRATOR:
And Fuzz will face
his biggest challenge.

That car is going
to bite me
and bite me hard.

NARRATOR: It's gonna be

This car
is nowhere near done.

NARRATOR: To hopefully give
one unsuspecting owner...

NARRATOR: Today,
Tim and Fuzz
are on their way

to the South Coast
and rural Hampshire.

However, Fuzz is feeling
way out of his comfort zone.

What are we
picking up then?

The Nissan Skyline R33...

GT-R.

-Ah!
-(laughs)

I see it in your
beady little eyes, Fuzz.

-What, what, what?
-I see fear.

Yeah, you're too right
you see fear.

Have you seen what's
underneath the bonnet?

Yeah, but it's not just
what's under the bonnet,
it's a 2.6 Twin Turbo beast.

In fact, that car
was aptly named Godzilla.

I know. That's because
it is a monster of a car.

NARRATOR: Yes, the boys
might well be nervous,

as in the '90s
the Nissan GT-R Skyline

was built to dominate
the touring car race tracks,

eating up and spitting out
the opposition

in just about
every competition it entered.

It quickly became
every street racer's dream car.

Although the one the boys
are on their way to see

is more
of a horrible nightmare.

It's the property
of lady petrolhead Kim Tombs,

whose life has
revolved around cars
for more than 20 years.

She's owned
a few old bangers in her time

but there is one car that has
a very special meaning to her,

the Nissan GT-R.

She bought it with her husband
nine years ago.

However, when he
tragically passed away,

the dream car took on
greater sentimental value.

Of course she has no idea
that her car,

which is currently kept
in a friend's shed,

is about to become
the latest mission
for Tim and Fuzz.

It's too late
to go back now, Fuzz.
This is it. We're here.

NARRATOR: It was Kim's
17-year-old son Luke
and family friend Tim

who contacted Car SOS,

hoping that
restoring the Skyline will

bring an enormous amount
of much-needed joy
into her life.

You got it.

-Luke, hello, mate.
-How's it going?

First thing's first, right.
Most importantly,
where is your mum?

She's up at our house
up on Hayling Island.

Definitely not
peeking out
of a window?

-If she is, I'll be in haste.
-Okay. All right, cool.

-Now where is the car?
-Just up there in the garage.

TIM:
'Cause the clock's ticking,
and we wanna see this.

-You all right?
-Yeah, I am at the moment.
I'm okay at the moment.

-Do you want
to turn around and go back?
-FUZZ: Yeah, I do.

TIM: No, it's time
to confront your fears.

Right.
Here we go. Fuzz.

-Oh, yes.
-(Fuzz exclaims)

That's a sorry-looking beast,
isn't it?

Now I'm scared.

Now get under the bonnet.
Go, get in there.

-Confront your fears, son.
LUKE: Brace yourself.

-Oh, no , look at that.
-There it is.

The R33, 2.6 Twin-Turbo.

Twenty-four valve...

-Yes.
-Oh, man.

NARRATOR:
"Oh, man," indeed.

The legendary R33 GT-R Skyline

was launched in January 1995.

It sported a light-weight body
with a 2.6-liter
Twin-Turbo engine.

It was all-wheel drive
and explosively fast.

Hit the gas,
and the GT-R
could catapult itself

from 0 to 60 miles per hour
in under five seconds.

It caused a sensation
when it took

the production car lap record
at the Nurburgring in Germany

in under eight minutes,
and has gone down in history

as one of the ultimate
Japanese supercars.

TIM: Come on then.

-Okay.
-Here we go.

FUZZ: Easy now.
Careful not to scratch it.

TIM: Right. Stop, everyone,
let's have a look.

Oh, whoa.

I'll tell you what,
it's a sorry sight isn't it?

LUKE: Yeah.

So we've got
accident damage,

over the back.

What a damn crying shame
for this car, you know?

NARRATOR: So, while
car whisperer Fuzz gets to know
this bashed up beast...

(sighing)
Here we are, Nemesis.

...Tim finds out more
about its owner Kim.

I haven't met your mum
obviously.
Know nothing about her.

What kind of girl
is she?

Hard-worker.
She's committed to everything.

And she would do
whatever see can
to help whoever she can.

She works all the hours
under the sun just to provide,

you know,
what she can for the kids.

She goes out to work
day and night,
doesn't she?

-How many kids are they?
-Three.

Right, okay.
So she's a single mum.

Is it true that
your mum's a petrolhead?

Yeah, she loves cars.
She goes to the car shows
whenever she can.

Takes me
and my little brother,
and my little sister

to as many car shows
as she can afford.

-She sounds
like an amazing woman.
-Yeah.

NARRATOR: We wanted to
find out more about
this car-mad super-mum,

who, to make ends meet,
has two jobs.

Receptionist by day
and barmaid by night.

So, we secretly
caught up with her
on a rare day off.

And guess
where she takes the kids?

Banger racing!

With cameras out of sight,
we got chatting,

and it wasn't long before
Kim's Skyline cropped up.

You come from
a car family,
is it or...

Yeah, my husband was all cars,
literally,

and his last car was a Skyline.

A little bit worse for wear
at this moment.

-Is it?
-Yeah. So...

But he passed away, so...

He never got the chance
to actually finish it.

Oh, dear.
Oh, no.

But it's one of my aims,

one day I'll get it done.

Okay.

NARRATOR: Car-mad Kim and
her like-minded husband Mark

bought the Nissan
nine years ago
as a crash damaged write-off,

a project he couldn't wait
to get started on.

But his dream
was never realized

as just weeks
after buying the car

Mark was killed in
a tragic motorcycle accident,

leaving Kim widowed
with a young family

and a vow
she was desperate to keep.

Tell me about the funeral.

Because your mum said something.
She made a promise, right?

She was stood in front
of everyone, at the church,
and she promised everyone,

everything that
he's ever done in life
and not finished,

-she will complete.
-Right.

And she's got all of them done
apart from the car.

She always saved

and then something else
would come along

with a higher priority

and it'd have to be
pushed back.

NARRATOR:
Kim would love to get the car
back on the road,

not just as a tribute
to her husband

but because she absolutely
loves the car.

However, she's had to
put her family first,

meaning her beloved Skyline
has ended up rotting in a shed.

Take a look inside.

It's pretty musty,

but the actual interior

doesn't look to be
in too bad a shape.

(door squeaking)

Let's have a look in here.
(laughs)

Look at this.
That is absolutely nuts.

Look at that, for a silencer.

That's the exhaust.
It's the size of a dustbin.

-Right, Fuzz.
-Yeah.

You need to know this car
is very, very important
to Luke here,

and most importantly
his mum Kim.

Understood.
And we are going to take
really great care of it.

So, what is the deal?

Well, it's battered

on every single side.

I don't know what's going on
with the wheels as well.

Well, I mean
we've only got three wheels,

and look at the state
of that one.

TIM: Nice one.
Let's get it loaded up.

FUZZ: You've got your work
cut out for you, eh?

It looks like
a big, big, big job.

I don't know if anything's
gonna work on that car.

It's just such a monster
of a vehicle.

-It's a non--

NARRATOR:
Well, now, Godzilla
is up on the trailer...

-(roars)
-Oi, don't do that.

-It's scary enough anyway.
-(whining)

NARRATOR: ...it's off
to the Car SOS workshop.

I know that that car
is going to bite me
and bite me hard.

NARRATOR:
And once back at base,

it's time to find out
just how bad things really are.

Right, Fuzz, this is totally
new territory for us.

Yeah, I mean taking on
an accident-damaged car

is not something
that should be done lightly.

So, what I suggest
we do here,
a 30-second once-around

as if we've got 30 seconds
to make our mind up
to buy this car or not.

Right. So, 30 seconds
starting from...now.

Right. You take one side,
I'll take the other.

(Fuzz exclaiming)

You'll never spot that.

Right. Hang on.
You're going too quick for me.
Slow down.

Yeah. I've definitely
got more than you have.

-You reckon so?
-Absolutely.

Right, time's up.

What have you noticed?

-Okay, so, massive impact
on the nearside front...
-Bang.

The impact has traveled
along the frame of the car.

-And compromised...
-That door.

The gap is narrower
at the bottom
than it is at the top.

So, this car has had
a front-ender,

-the back end swung out...
-Yep.

-Bang.
-Bang.

-Bang, down the road
and eventually comes to a rest.
-Yes, exactly.

NARRATOR: So, the car looks
like it's been used as a ball
in a giant pinball machine.

And the underside
doesn't turn out
to be much better.

This has had
one hell of a whack up
up-front

-and it's gone up on a curb.
-Yeah.

Bang, bang, bang,
all the way
along both sides.

Bang, bang, bang here
right across the exhaust.

And you know that door
not fitting correctly
at the back there?

I reckon that might be because
the actual impact damage
is from underneath

and that's what's
pushed it out there.

-Fuzz, I've just got
to speak my mind.
-Go on.

I'm just worried
that we might be standing
underneath a pile of parts

which should be on a shelf
in a Nissan Skyline
breakers yard.

It's not good, is it?

NARRATOR: Tim and Fuzz
have taken on their first
Japanese supercar.

Kim's Nissan Skyline GT-R

was one of
the fastest production cars
on the road

back in 1995,

and it's a fiendishly
complicated car

to put back together.

From that highly tuned
twin turbo

computer-controlled engine

that fills Fuzz with fear,

to its accident-damaged
body panels,

the boys certainly
have their work cut out.

This car could be hiding
a whole heap of problems.

NARRATOR:
A few of the major jobs
that will need addressing

include the car's
monstrous exhaust pipe,

which has been
bashed so badly, it will
need serious attention.

Replacements of those rare and
very expensive Nismo wheels
will need to be sourced,

and the whole rear assembly,
which seems to have taken
the brunt of the accident

will need removing
for inspection.

But will it
have to be replaced?

FUZZ: A bit further.
That's it.

Look at that assembly,
that is just the nuts...

Can you pull it out a bit
please, Phil?
Carefully, there we go.

Yes, please.
An absolute work of '90s art.
Look at that.

That thing is incredible.
It pretty much could be
the front of the car.

You've got steering
on the rear end of this thing,
which means your car,

instead of just being
pulled around the corner
by the front wheels,

are actually encouraged around
by the back ones as well.

That is wicked.

I can already see
where the impact happened
on this corner.

-But look. Look at this.
This is all twisted around here.
-TIM: Yeah. Absolutely.

I also know
that this rack housing here
is cracked.

Right. So any little movement
here will be amplified out there
there so...

-Yeah. Exactly so.
-Swap the whole subframe,
right?

For a high-performance car,
I think it's
the only thing to do.

I mean, look,
even the steering arm...

All right, listen, I'm gonna
get cracking on the parts.

Exhaust parts,
all sorts of stuff.

-You crack over this, all right?
-You see what you can do.

-All right then.
-Oh, yeah.

NARRATOR:
So that rear assembly is first
on Tim's list of parts

and there are
plenty of others, too.

The few R33 Skylines
that entered Britain
in the 1990s

were all independent imports
from Japan,

so Tim is expecting parts
to be hard to find.

First stop
is Jap Performance Parts,

a veritable cornucopia
of Japanese spares

and some rather nice cars
to add to the bargain.

Oh, yes!
The original Celica GT.

Oh, my, gosh,
this place is mint.

NARRATOR: But will Tim
get anything on his list?

-Hello, mate.
-Hi, there.

How you doing? Right.
I'm looking for parts
for an R33 Skyline.

I've got a massive list.
I don't want to terrify you.

So, if we could get
a couple of them,

I will be buzzing, all right?

Okay, so here we go.

Brake disks and pads,
coil packs times six,

I need the rear subframe,
including
the rear steering rack,

nearside drive shaft,
all the suspension bushes,
all the gaiters.

I need the service items.
Need an auxiliary belt,

I need oil filters,
I need the track rod end,

I need the cam belt.

Bonnet, slam panel,
front indicators,

I need the rear lenses,

I need the wipers,
I need the weather seal,

the door seal, window rubber,

I need the clutch kit,

Skylines might have been few
and far between in Britain,

but this place imports
new and second-hand spares
direct from Japan,

where the cars
weren't so rare.

-You sure
you're all right there?
-Yep.

NARRATOR:
Great news for Tim.

I'm gonna go put these
at the reception counter,
all right?

(groans)

NARRATOR:
Back at the workshop,
and Fuzz is now

facing up to
that highly complex and
computer-controlled engine.

Here is the moment of truth.

(engine faltering)

(engine stops)

NARRATOR:
If it doesn't start,

it could mean taking
the whole thing apart,

and the thought of that
is worrying everyone.

FUZZ: We've tried
starting the Skyline

and it's shown
a little bit of enthusiasm,

but it's not actually
up and running just yet.

Okay, so we know
we've got fuel going up.

(engine faltering)

It might be that we still got
a lot of old petrol
in the system.

Modern and leaded petrol
is not the greatest

after it's been standing
for more than maybe
about two or three months.

But this has been standing
for nine years.

I can't expect much
from any of the petrol
that was remaining in here.

NARRATOR: Well, let's hope
for Fuzz's sake,
that is the case.

At the parts shop, Tim has
found just about everything
on his long shopping list.

One bonnet coming up.

NARRATOR:
Even that rear assembly

is on the shelf and good to go.

That's the puppy.

Let's go through that list.

Which means that
Tim can now step back

and enjoy that wonderful

Let's have a look.

it is gorgeous, isn't it?

And it's not just the visuals
Tim's enjoying.

at some point

Well, while Tim's been out
enjoying himself,

Fuzz has been at the workshop

still beavering away at
that non-starting engine.

The cam belts is a vital
component in the engine.
Yet it's made of rubber.

Rubber only lasts generally
for about five years
in automotive use.

So, instead of having
a catastrophic failure

where the cam belt snaps,
the valves are left down
and exposed,

and then the pistons
clatter up into them,
scrapping the whole engine.

Best policy is to change it.

NARRATOR:
If timing is the issue
why Godzilla won't roar,

Fuzz might just have got to
the bottom of the problem.

I've just taken the camshaft
position sensor out

and it says, "May not work."
I'll tell you what.

That's possibly one reason
why this engine didn't
fire up in the first place.

(laughs)
It's written on the part.

NARRATOR:
Now, Tim might have
just got back

from the easiest
parts-buying trip ever,

but he's not gonna
let Fuzz know that.

You look like you've been
dragged through a hedge
backwards.

You've been having
a hard time of it, old chap?

I don't want to

-You've got the cam belts
and everything.

That's brilliant.
That's just what I need.

I'm going to sit down here,
I am absolutely knackered.

a cup of tea and some cake.

I dropped the cakes, Fuzz.

Well, while Tim goes off
to change his trousers,

Fuzz has a shortcut of his own
with that rubber timing belt.

What I'm doing here
is I've split the cam belt

right along its length,
all the way around.

The idea behind that is
that I can take off the
outer part of the cam belts...

There we are.
Now, here is the new cam belt.

The reason I've done this
is because I want these pulleys

to stay in exactly
the right place.

They've got to
be synchronized.

Now, I can just slide
the new belts on

and put it exactly
where it's supposed to go.

There we are.
What I can now do,

I can very carefully
cut the old belt,

So, I'll get that
out of the way.

I can now push the new one
all the way home,
and that's it.

No need for any special tools.
Bingo.

NARRATOR:
And it's not just that fearsome
engine that needs work,

the car's body is a mess, too.

So, while the panel beaters
get going
on the bashed up shell,

Tim and Fuzz have time
to find out more

about the Japanese beast
they have taken on.

Right. This is my first time
in a R33 GT-R.

I have to say
it is mine as well.
I'm really surprised.

I thought that this car
would feel big, beefy
and chunky.

But the interior
looks like a Micra.

But who cares?
'Cause when you
drive this car,

you don't look down there,
you look at the road.

(engine revving)

Come on, Tim.
Here's a beat.

NARRATOR: Yes, the R33
was built for speed,
not interior design.

It was the ultimate icon
of the PlayStation
Gran Turismo generation

and sealed its fame
in the Hollywood blockbuster
Fast and Furious.

But has it stood
the test of time?

-Oh, it pulls.

The gearbox is tight,
the steering's tight.

If you don't look down
to the plastic fantastic,

you are driving
a brand new car.

NARRATOR: In 1995,
a Skyline might have cost
an eye-watering £50,000.

But for that you were getting
a racing-inspired, a mega-smart
four-wheel drive system

that can switch between
four and rear-wheel drive

to provide unbelievable grip
in all conditions.

I mean the track is wet,
but you know what?

It just holds so well.

It is fantastic to drive.

And I cannot believe
we're driving a car
which is 20 years old.

NARRATOR:
Under the bonnet, that
straight six 2.6-liter engine

pumps out
280 brake horsepower.

Making the car beefy enough
to remind anyone
what real driving is all about.

out of production in 1999.

But fear not,
there is a replacement.

It might no longer
carry the Skyline tag,

but the new Nissan GT-R
certainly inherited
that Godzilla reputation.

This is the most
amazing experience of my life!

NARRATOR: This is
a production car that can
achieve 0 to 60 in 2.7 seconds

and a top speed
of 196 miles per hour.

It's a car
that's designed to impress.

It is just stunning
perfection.

they've got so much power...

Honestly,
it's just so incredible.

NARRATOR:
Like its 20-year-old
predecessor,

the GT-R is simply packed
with technology,

including torque-shuffling
differentials
to give it maximum traction.

This is a fast-thinking car
that's built
to be pushed to the limits.

And it's left the boys
lost for words.

(yelling excitedly)

Yes, Tim might well scream,

because back in the garage
the workload
is still piling up.

The bashed-up bodywork
is taking its time,

and of course,
that mighty engine,

the one that
fills them both with fear,

still won't start.

When Tim and Fuzz took on
Kim's 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R,

they knew they were going to
have their hands full.

I tell you what,
it's a sorry sight,
isn't it?

Kim and her husband Mark
bought the car

as a restoration project
nine years ago.

But when
he was tragically killed

in their workshop.

I've been trying to
work out a way
of getting a freebie,

and I've come up
with an absolute corker.

(phone ringing over speaker)

Just a quick one.

I've been making exhausts
for years,
and I'm currently out of work.

I was wondering

I've never made an exhaust
in my life, okay?

-I've always wanted
to see how they're made.

the process, if possible.

on removing
the car's old differential

and putting it into
the brand new rear subframe.

I really love the smell
of rear axle oil.

NARRATOR:
Now, the Skyline
had a reputation

for astonishing road-holding

in all weather conditions...

Up and out!

...and that was partly down
to its limited
slip differentials,

both front and back,
which ensured
the car's immense power

went to whichever wheels
had the most grip.

Right, down.

You just pull that out now.

So all I have to do now

is to tighten up
the mounting bolts,

and then
put the drive shafts in.

NARRATOR:
And with the whole
rear assembly reassembled,

it's a relatively easy job
to bolt it back under the car.

Right, that's that
back in then.

NARRATOR:
Meanwhile, at the suppliers,
Tim is now

hopefully assembling
all the right parts for
that super-sized exhaust.

Right, what is
the first thing we do?

Let's get this faced.
So, we take the burr off,

so that we can bolt it up
flush against the car.

Right. So the burr is
just the sharp edging
around the outside. Okay, right.

-How's that?
-Yep, that's okay.

-Happy with that?
-Yep.

-Right, what's next?
-Weld the pipe
onto the flange.

Let's do it.

All right. So, that's now
tacked on there.
Next thing.

-We've got to bend
the tube to 20 degrees.
-Okay.

-So, if you put
this in the machine...
-Yeah.

...set the degrees to 20.

No way. (exclaims)

Now that's your...
Your bend.

Fold it a little bit.

That's gorgeous,
look at that.

Okay, so we now
have the shape
of the silencer.

-We just need
to fill it with stuff.

TIM: Now this stuff
looks like loft insulation.

This is basically the bit
that's gonna take away some
of the noise from the engine.

-Yep.
-Right.

-Pull that out, and then we put
this in the middle.

-Right.
-Squash it down,

and then the last thing
we weld the two end caps on.

NARRATOR:
So before you can
shake a tail pipe,

with a bit of welding
here and there,

a brand new bespoke exhaust
comes into being.

Right, so hang on a minute.
All we've gotta do
is weld this onto that

and then we have
an exhaust for a Skyline
hanging around?

Yep, that's right.

Shame we haven't got
a Skyline it could fit.

-It is a shame.
-Well, actually,
hang on a minute.

-I think I might

NARRATOR:
Of course there still is
the little matter of the price.

Back at the workshop,

and the car's former
broken and bent body

has now been
bashed back into shape
and is nearly ready for paint.

But before that happens,
Kim's son Luke
and family friend Tim,

have dropped in
to find out
how things are going.

-(Fuzz laughing)

than this vintage car buff
is used to.

NARRATOR: The problem
seems to be petrol,

and Fuzz has been waiting
for a refurbished set

of fuel injectors to arrive.

What fuel injectors
actually do

is to deliver
the exact amount of fuel
at just the right time

for the optimum performance
of the engine.

NARRATOR:
As the car has been standing
for nearly 10 years,

its fuel injectors may have
become corroded and blocked.

Right,
there is the fuel injector rail
and the injectors out.

We could have
got these overhauled,

but we've got
a refurbished set
to put in anyway.

So, we're gonna replace these,
saves us a bit of time,
cheats us along a bit.

NARRATOR:
So, with the fuel system
flushed out

and some fresh petrol
in the tank,
it's fingers and toes crossed.

Right,
this is the moment of truth.
Let's give it a try.

-Here we go.
-(engine starting)

That makes me
very happy indeed.

NARRATOR:
Purring like a pussycat.
It was Fuzz's nemesis,

but he's proved
even a modern
wild beast of an engine

can be tamed with a bit
of old-fashioned knowhow.

That's a brutish car.

NARRATOR:
Well, with the car's engine
now running smoothly,

another one of the major jobs
can be ticked off.

The rear assembly
is now in place,

and the exhaust
has now been fitted.

But there's still the matter
of those new wheels
which have been refurbished,

but have yet to be put on.

Right, Fuzzbot.

-Shut your eyes.
-Okay.

-I can see you peeking!

-All right. Now, stay there.
-FUZZ: All right.

I'm going to show you something
which has been,
I'd like to point out,

the bane of my life.

there are still umpteen jobs
that need doing,

and an air of panic
is starting to set in.

This car
is nowhere near done,

and in 12 hours time,
it has to be on a transport
on the way to the NEC.

NARRATOR:
In true Car SOS style,

in the workshop once again
it's all hands on deck.

The electrics are reconnected
and tested.

A new front bumper is fitted.

Those iconic Nismo wheels
are at last put back on.

Nismo is back in town.

NARRATOR:
Not even the tiniest job
can be overlooked

if this car is to go back
in tip-top shape.

Okay, lower it down.
Carefully now.

It does look pretty amazing.

of last minute jobs.

At the National Exhibition
Center in Birmingham
excitement is in the air.

Some rather nice cars
are lining up to be displayed,
pored over and adored

because it's early doors
at the annual
Classic Motor Show.

However, one pristine
and polished motor
is conspicuous in its absence.

Where the hell is he?

Do you know what,
I'm surrounded by some of
the world's most beautiful cars,

and I adore these cars.
But I can't see any of them

because our car's not here,
so I don't care about these.

I want one car here,
the R33 GT-R,
that's what I want, our car.

Where the hell is Fuzz,
seriously?

NARRATOR:
Yes, Fuzz has been working
on the car right to the wire,

and with minutes to go
till owner Kim arrives,
nerves are getting frayed.

to raise their profile

by having his photo taken
with his adoring fans,
whether they like it or not.

is going to be lured in
to the queue to meet Tim

and the trap will be sprung.

Friends and family
are also here
to join in the surprise.

It is absolutely brilliant.

It was her husband's dream
to do that to the car.

non-starting engine,
now polished and powered up,

worthy once again
of its Godzilla reputation.

Those Nismo wheels,
diamond-cut and gleaming,

waiting eagerly
to hit the road.

And at its wheel,
its devoted owner.

It's a day she thought
she would never see.

-How does it feel?
-I can't describe how I feel.

for such a long time.

And my promise to the kids was
that I'd get it done one day.
