TIM: Pay for three

NARRATOR: ...are on
an undercover mission

to rescue classic cars
for deserving owners.

FUZZ: Look at that!

NARRATOR: This time,
it's a sixties supercar

that's seen better days.

TIM: This car should have been
crushed a long, long time ago.

NARRATOR: The massive motor
turns out to be

more headache
than head turner.

TIM: Look at it,
it's half a car,

and the other half here,
the engine,

is falling to pieces.

NARRATOR: And it's gonna be
a race against time

to hopefully give
one unsuspecting owner...

MAN: This is magic!

NARRATOR: ...the surprise
of their life.

MAN: This is my car?

WOMAN: It can't be the car!

TIM: You have been Car SOS'd.

♪ ♪

NARRATOR: Today, Tim and Fuzz

are on their way
to Leicestershire,

and excitement is in the air
because they have a hot date

with a car that really does
deserve to be called iconic.

TIM: What are we
picking up, then?

FUZZ: We're picking up
a Jaguar.

TIM: And it is?
FUZZ: An E-Type.

TIM: Yes, it is.

FUZZ: Or XKE.

TIM: And it's two plus two,
isn't it?

FUZZ: It is, yeah, so that means
two proper seats in the front

and two little seats
in the back for the kids.

TIM: Right. Come on, then,
are you excited?

FUZZ: Am I excited?
It's a Jaguar E-Type,

of course I'm excited!

TIM: Have you done
a little wee-wee?

FUZZ: Might have, Tim.

NARRATOR: The E-Type Jag
was a motoring sensation

when it was launched at
the Geneva Motor Show in 1961.

Its revolutionary
styling, performance,

and competitive price

meant it became one of
the most influential cars

of a generation,

leading Italian car supremo
Enzo Ferrari to declare

that it was the most
beautiful car ever made.

Sadly, the one
the boys are off to see

is not in any way beautiful.

In fact, it's a mess.

Although,
don't tell its owner,

school caretaker
Mick Winterburn,

because it's his dream car.

He's had it almost a decade.

However, in all that time,
circumstances and ill health

have got in the way
of a planned restoration,

meaning this is
a child of the sixties

that's in need
of a little less peace

and a bit more love.

TIM: (whispers) E-Type.

NARRATOR: Of course,
Mick has no idea

that Tim and Fuzz
are about to pay a visit.

It was his daughter Karen
and wife Trisha

who secretly
made the Car SOS call,

hoping his refurbished car
will refuel Mick's life.

Now, to keep
the whole thing undercover,

the boys are blending
into the background

by dressing as a pair
of car thieves?

FUZZ: Hi, there.

Hi, I'm Tim. Look, it's me,
and it's him, Fuzz.

FUZZ: How's it going?
TRISHA: Fine. Thank you.

TIM: Right, biggest thing,
is he in?

TRISHA: No, he's at work.

TIM: Okay. We have
an E-Type here.

TRISHA: You do.

TIM: And we have some hands
that are itching to work on it.

TRISHA: Brilliant.
KAREN: Lovely.

TIM: So, can we have
a look at it?

TRISHA: You can.
TIM: Lead the way.

♪ ♪

FUZZ: Look at that!

TIM: Yes! What a peach!

FUZZ: Come on. I've got to...
I've got to do this slowly.

TIM: Go on, then.

FUZZ: Look at that.
TIM: Peel it back.

FUZZ: Look at that.

TIM: Wow!

FUZZ: That is a car!
That is the car.

NARRATOR: The car, indeed!

With its aerodynamic body

and a powerful straight six
265 brake horsepower XK engine,

this Jag could reach
150 miles per hour,

making it
one of the fastest cars

on the market in the 1960s.

Although its original price tag
of a little over £2,000

was over twice the average
annual household income,

it was actually much cheaper
than its supercar rivals.

An instant hit worldwide,

it stayed in production
right through to 1975.

Nowadays, a concours
condition E-Type

can sell for
in excess of £200,000,

so if you can find a cheapie,
it could be a wise investment.

KAREN: My dad, this is
his pride and joy.

He loves this car.

TIM: The word icon was invented
for this car in the sixties.

Absolutely. It's a beast.
Your dad's a cool dude.

KAREN: It's kind of a bit
long and ugly, if I'm honest.

TIM: Call me long and ugly,
not that, all right?

Right, I'm taking you
out of here.

KAREN: I'm sorry.

TIM: I want to talk to you
about Mick.

You do your thing,
all right?

FUZZ: I've got to have
a look over this.

TIM: Come with me.
KAREN: Enjoy.

NARRATOR: So while Tim finds
out more about owner Mick,

Fuzz gets to grips with this
48-year-old grand tourer.

FUZZ: I can already see

that it's had a bit
of front-end shunt action.

It's certainly taken
a whack to the front.

It's absolutely chock-full
of filler here, loads of it.

So, I think
we might have a few problems.

TIM: What does that car
mean to Mick?

TRISHA: Well, it's just
everything to him.

It's his life's dream.

It's what he's wanted
since he was 10, 12 years old.

He used to go to Jag open days

at the Jaguar Browns Lane
with his dad.

TIM: Oh, so his dad
worked at Jaguar?

TRISHA: His dad worked there.

You know, a little boy
going inside cars.

But the E-Type is what
he's always wanted,

a red E-Type.

NARRATOR: We wanted
to find out more

about our unsuspecting hero,

so, posing
as documentary makers,

we sneaked an interview
with him

at the school for blind
and disabled children,

where he works as a caretaker.

MICK: Yes, I enjoy my job.
I love it.

And the school, I'd say
I enjoy every bit of it.

Plus, you are doing something
different all the time.

NARRATOR: And it wasn't long

before we steered
the conversation

round to his beloved Jag.

MICK: I've got a classic car,
and it's an E-Type Jaguar,

with rust spots on it
and lots of other problems.

There's quite a few things
needs doing on it.

NARRATOR:
So, Mick might love his Jag,

but why does he deserve
the Car SOS treatment?

TRISHA: For the past 20 years,

he's had various things
go wrong in his life.

One day, at work,

he just tripped
on some water on the stairs.

They took him to the hospital,

and they found out
he'd broken his ankle.

TIM: Right.

TRISHA: And from there,
they picked up

that he'd got
progressive osteoporosis.

TIM: So his whole skeletal
system is crumbling?

TRISHA: Yes.

MICK: And they picked up

that I got black shadows
on the bones,

and it was in my leg,
my pelvis, and then my spine.

NARRATOR:
By taking an easier job

and carefully managing
what physical work he takes on,

Mick has prolonged
his working life,

though the strong painkillers

which help him
get through each day

are becoming
less and less effective.

MICK: I'm on injections
now daily.

There's nothing else
after that, obviously.

But you just
live with it, though,

like anything, though,
don't you?

NARRATOR: For Mick, now 62,

it's physically impossible
to restore the E-Type,

but with Car SOS's help,

the fading dream is just
about to become a reality.

FUZZ: Ah. That beautiful,
beautiful, beautiful engine.

What a piece of machinery.

If we get this gleaming,
this is going to look amazing.

Can't wait to hear that fire up.

TIM: What will he do
when he gets it back?

What's his reaction
going to be?

TRISHA: I don't know.
He won't believe it.

KAREN: No.

TIM: You don't know 'cause this
stuff doesn't happen to him.

TRISHA: No,
only bad things happen.

TIM: We've had enough
bad things now.

Let's get something decent,
and an E-Type's pretty decent.

Fuzz?

FUZZ: Yeah?

TIM: Right, dude. Wow!
That's the first time that car

has seen the light of day
for a long time.

FUZZ: Too right.

TIM: What have you found
by the way? Anything--

FUZZ: Well, I'll tell you what,
the paintwork's really tired.

TIM: Let's just go, because
it's getting a bit on top here.

FUZZ: All right. Okay.

(grunting)

NARRATOR: To really
get to know this car,

the lads have to get it
back to the garage,

and they'll have
to do it quickly

before any nosy neighbors
recognize them

and spill the beans to Mick.

TIM: I feel like
I'm pushing two cars,

the windscreen's that far away.

NARRATOR: So it's up
onto the trailer

and out of here ASAP.

TIM: Fuzz, are we
locked and loaded?

FUZZ: Yep, we're all sorted.

TIM: That's amazing. Right.

Where does Mick think the car
is going, by the way?

TRISHA: To a friend's, so he can
paint the garage floor.

He can't do it while it's in.

TIM: Right. So Mick's
getting somebody in

to paint the garage floor.

How long have we got?

KAREN: Few weeks.

TRISHA: Yeah.

NARRATOR: With their
precious cargo safely stowed,

the boys hit the open road,

and already it's the source
of some debate.

FUZZ: It just looks amazing.

TIM: You wouldn't suit it.

FUZZ: I suit that car.

TIM: No, you wouldn't.
FUZZ: I suit that car.

TIM: No, you wouldn't suit it.

FUZZ: That car suits me.

TIM: It'll suit you with rubber
gloves on, working on it,

but driving it,
there's only one bloke.

Who's that bloke I know
who'd suit it?

Um, me. Got it all covered.

NARRATOR: Well,
they're going to need

to get the thing
up and running first.

And back at the Car SOS HQ,

it's time for the team
to have their first look

at this big cat's underbelly.

TIM: Fuzz.

FUZZ: Yeah?

TIM: Even from down here,

the welding
you can see on this car

is absolutely terrible.

FUZZ: It's shocking, isn't it?

NARRATOR:
Halfway up on the lift,

and Mick's E-Type
is starting to crumble.

TIM: Filler.
Have you got a magnet?

NARRATOR: With a magnet,
the boys can see

how much
of this bodywork is metal

and how much is filler
from ancient botched repairs.

FUZZ: Look at that.
There's nothing there.

TIM: So, the whole front
of this car is filler.

It's that thick. It could be
another car underneath.

It could be a Capri or a Mini.

They just made it
look like an E-Type.

NARRATOR: Looking
underneath the car,

there's a stickier
problem to attend to.

FUZZ: Oil leak.

TIM: Great. So we've got oil
from the engine leaking,

oil from the gearbox leaking.

FUZZ: So, that's engine out,
gearbox out.

TIM: If this wasn't an E-Type,

this car would have been
crushed a long, long time ago.

NARRATOR: Yes, it might have
been swinging in the sixties,

but right now, it's
teetering on a tightrope.

Could this
notoriously complex car

be an SOS step too far?

FUZZ: I'll tell you what,
this car has already died,

and we're going to have
to bring it back to life.

NARRATOR: An initial assessment
of Mick's 1966 E-Type

has given the boys
a long list of jobs,

starting with
its iconic bodywork,

which is thick with old filler,

and ending with an
undercarriage dripping in oil.

So, Tim's made
an early start of it,

and he's already
tracking down parts.

TIM: I need, basically,
a full bush kit, for a start.

Pretty much all the rubber
has perished.

NARRATOR: The size of this job

is enough to give anyone
a sleepless night,

except for Fuzz,
who is unusually late for work.

TIM: Let me tell you
something about Fuzz.

He lives here.
He's always here.

Where is he?

I tell you what, I'm going
to get the bonnet off.

I'm going to do as much
as I can before he gets here.

NARRATOR: Fuzz-less, the boys
get straight on to removing

the E-Type's
bashed-up old bonnet

to reveal the monster
that lurks beneath.

This 4.2 6-cylinder beast

is what gives
this big cat its bite.

Jaguar's legendary
XK engine range

was first introduced in 1948

and continued to be made
right up to 1992.

That's some record,
but doesn't necessarily mean

this one is going to start,

even if Workshop Phil
gives it his handsome face.

TIM: We've got water
in the radiator.

We've got fuel here.

PHIL: Yeah.

TIM: Have we got a spark?
PHIL: I don't know.

TIM: We can see it in there.
Absolutely.

(engine sputtering)

No spark?

PHIL: No.
TIM: Right.

PHIL: We're getting nothing
out of the distributor at all.

TIM: Right. Have you checked
all the leads?

PHIL: Yeah.
TIM: Checked the points?

PHIL: Done those.
Did that earlier on.

TIM: Well, what's that?

Hang on. Look.

It's not going to be
this simple, is it?

PHIL: Switch on,
press the button.

TIM: This is it.

PHIL: Do you want to press the--

TIM: Yeah, I know
what I'm doing.

I've got no rush.
Here we go. You ready?

PHIL: Yeah.

(engine starts)

TIM: Yes! Yes!

Granddad, we did it!

PHIL: Yeah.
TIM: Let's get breakfast.

Bacon, E-Type,
sausage, and tomato.

NARRATOR: So, a simple break

in the low-tension
distributor cable

was enough to keep
this motor from running.

But along with the gearbox,
it's still leaking oil,

so we'll go on the list

as needing a strip down
and refurb.

The bashed-up bonnet
is going to need a reshaping

to get it back
to its former glory.

And as for the rest
of the bodywork,

well, it seems
tired and bumpy,

so that will have to be
taken back to bare metal

before the car can be
finally resprayed.

So, plenty to be
getting on with.

And guess what the cat's
just dragged in.

TIM: ...window. Okay.

FUZZ: How's it going?
Sorry I'm a bit late. Overslept.

TIM: Okay, do you want
the bad news,

or do you want the good news?

FUZZ: Uh...the bad news.

TIM: Well, the bad news is...

FUZZ: Come on.

TIM: I'm sorry to tell you this,

but we're going to
have to let you go.

FUZZ: (laughs) I'm fired?

TIM: Yeah, 'cause you're late.

FUZZ: How does that work?
I don't quite get how--

TIM: The good news...
FUZZ: Okay, go on.

TIM: ...is the fact that me and
a tiny bit of Phil's thumb...

FUZZ: Yeah.

TIM: ...has got
the E-Type going.

FUZZ: No way.
TIM: Yep.

FUZZ: Well, hold on,
that's my job.

TIM: Well, no, it's not,
because your job's ended.

FUZZ: Listen, I don't like it
when things like that,

big jobs like that are done
without me being around.

TIM: Well, whose fault
is that, then?

Get a bag, get your tools,
do one. You're fired.

NARRATOR:
And with that bombshell,

Tim's off on his first mission.

TIM: You mark my words,

I have most definitely put
the willies up on Fuzz there.

He thinks he's fired.

And one thing happens

when you do such a thing
to Fuzz, motivation.

He will be in there raring up
the troops right now

and pulling his finger out.

I expect to see a lot
of work on the E-Type.

In the meantime,
I've got the bonnet.

I'm going to go
and get it sorted out.

NARRATOR: And sure enough...

FUZZ: We have got some
serious work to do here.

Tim has got that engine started.

By the time he comes back,
I want to make sure

that that car
is totally unrecognizable.

It's got to be stripped
from top to bottom. Come on.

If Tim thinks
he can fire me,

he's got another thing coming.

I'm going to get stuck
into that E-Type.

I'm going to make sure that
we get everything else done.

By the time he comes back,

that car is going to be
unrecognizable.

NARRATOR: So Tim's mind game
has worked a treat.

And while Fuzz and the team

make a lightning assault
on the back of the Jag,

Tim has plans
for the front of it.

TIM: Ah, the boys
are back in town.

How you doing?
You're the strippers?

MAN: Yeah.

TIM: I don't want
to see that show.

NARRATOR: Dipping
and stripping cars

is a bit of a dark art.

Tim Booth has been at it
for 20 years,

but will he share
his secrets with Tim?

TIM: So, the chemicals you use

are in a formula which
I'm not allowed to know.

BOOTH: Yes. Bat wing,
frog leg, witch's tooth.

TIM: Are you winding me up?
Are you winding me up?

BOOTH: That's as far
as you can get, really.

TIM: It's gonna get stripped.

NARRATOR: Well,
we do know the bonnet

will go into an oven
at 570 degrees Fahrenheit

till all the paint falls off,
and after that, who knows?

Back at the garage,

Fuzz's little pep talk
seems to have worked.

And his team have taken
the car back to a shell,

revealing some suspicious
repairs to the wheel arch.

FUZZ: Now, looking at it
round here,

I thought that the wheel arches
were all bubbling and bumpy,

and I thought that
that was probably

because there was
galloping rust underneath.

But as it happens, there was
pretty solid metal down there.

There's lots
and lots of filler.

It's millimeters thick here.

What we'll do is
we'll cut all of this out

and put a fresh, new panel in,
which will be much better.

NARRATOR:
Back at the strippers,

and the bonnet is now
out of the oven

and ready to be dipped
in its secret solution

for a few hours,

so to keep himself amused,

Tim has discovered
a little something

at the side of the road.

TIM: No way. Check it out.
GT40. Whose is that?

BOOTH: Built by moi.

TIM: You? Is this yours?
BOOTH: It is.

NARRATOR: A contemporary
of the E-Type,

the Ford GT40 was one

of the most successful cars
in road racing

and won the 24 Hour race
at Le Mans from 1966 to 1969.

BOOTH: Yes, please.

Are you all right
getting in there, Tim?

TIM: Uh! 6-foot-6.

NARRATOR: If you're wondering
what the 40 represents,

that's all 40 inches
of the car's overall height.

TIM: Oh, this is gorgeous.

Right, so, we'll...

Oh, you're having a laugh.

BOOTH: Try leaning...
Yeah, it's not too far away.

(engine starts)

TIM: If you're really tall--

I know it looks uncomfortable.
It's not actually that bad.

NARRATOR: This one
might be a replica,

but in 2012, one of the 107
that were originally produced

sold in America for
a record-breaking $11 million.

♪ ♪

Now, the GT40 doesn't have
much room in the front

for a very good reason,

there's something
rather large in the back.

TIM: Now, that's how
a car should look.

Look at the state of--
That is gorgeous.

So, what have you got here,
400 brake, more?

BOOTH: 450, 500 brake. Yeah.

TIM: No way! What a beast.
Right, thank you for that.

Thanks for the ride.
Where is it? In here?

BOOTH: It is.

TIM: I'm fine.

(Booth laughs)

NARRATOR:
Back at the workshop,

and Tim can at last now see
the fruits of Fuzz's hard work.

Or is it his own hard work?

TIM: What have you done to it?

FUZZ: A little bit
of team motivation!

TIM: What have you done?

FUZZ: So Tim came back,
saw the car.

It's gone so far,
it absolutely floored him.

TIM: Who's done this?

FUZZ: Me and the team,
we got down to it.

TIM: It's a massive
amount of work.

I'm very impressed.
But I will be honest,

and I do think that
it's down to me.

There's nothing here.

You've had a day and half, mate.
That's insane.

FUZZ: I think somebody
owes someone an apology.

Tim, just say it.

TIM: Okay.

FUZZ: So...so...so...

TIM: Sausage sandwich.

(both laughing)

It's amazing
what you can do to somebody

when you shock them,
inject a bit of negativity

like, "Fuzz, you're fired,"
and look what he did.

FUZZ: The good news
is that the shell

is not as bad as we thought,

but there is
one major dilemma.

Take a look inside.

TIM: Oh.

FUZZ: It's white.

This was a white
E-Type Jaguar,

so I think we should
paint it white.

TIM: I think we should
just go for a compromise.

FUZZ: Pink?
TIM: Pink!

NARRATOR:
The bashed and bumpy body

of Mick's 1966 E-Type

is now about as stripped back
as it could possibly be,

but it doesn't stop there.

With oil leaking
from almost every orifice,

Fuzz is going to have to pull

that notoriously complex engine
and gearbox apart.

FUZZ: I'm going
to remove the gearbox

because there are several leaks.

I think there's one coming
from the input side of it,

a leak on the select side,
there's leaks from the pan.

It needs a bit of an overhaul,
a bit of love.

'Cause it was leaking
quite badly anyway.

There we go.
Ah! Now, that's great.

That oil is actually
quite clean.

There are little
friction clutches in here,

and when they wear,

this oil goes dark colored
and has a burnt smell.

But this (sniffs)
doesn't smell too bad.

NARRATOR: So, a spot
of good news for Fuzz,

but that gearbox will still
go off to a specialist

for a bit of a recondition,

and while it does,

it's time for the boys
to find out more

about what makes
the E-Type tick,

all in the name of research,
you understand.

TIM: Right, now, Fuzz,
me old mucker,

because you've
been working so hard, right?

I've decided to treat you
to a little spectacle of a car

that you might rather
want a go in.

FUZZ: Okay. Come on, then.

TIM: In fact, it's in front
of you right now! Yes, it is!

FUZZ: Look at that!

That is just probably
the most stunning E-Type

I've ever seen.

TIM: Get in it. You can
drive this one. All righty!

NARRATOR: When the E-type
was first unleashed

to the public in 1961,

for many, it was love
at first sight.

TIM: Oh, yes.

NARRATOR: 50 years later,
it hasn't lost its allure.

Along with the Mini Cooper,
the E-Type became synonymous

with the optimism and hedonism
of the sixties.

This wasn't just a car,

it was a player
in a cultural revolution

and an object of desire.

TIM: The thing
about this car for me is,

it's the epitome of exquisite.

FUZZ: This is about as close
as one can get in a road car--

TIM: To perfection.

FUZZ: Yeah, probably so.

TIM: I wish people
had the guts nowadays

to just design
a car like this.

FUZZ: Yes, totally.

TIM: Something that looks
like this.

FUZZ: Totally.

TIM: This thing must have
been designed by God.

FUZZ: It was! Yes!

TIM: No, seriously, though,
I mean, who is the guy...

Can you imagine being the guy
who designed this?

"What have you done
on this planet?

What have you changed
about the world?"

"Oh, I designed a car."
"Which one?"

"The E-Type."

FUZZ: Go to heaven.

(laughing)

NARRATOR: But this car
wasn't just about looks.

That XK engine gave power
to the pedal, too.

(engine revving)

TIM: Ah. Listen to that.
That is gorgeous!

What does the "E" stand
for on the steering wheel?

Do you think it just stands
for Excellent Type?

FUZZ: It's the big smile
that comes on your face.

BOTH: E!

(laughter)

FUZZ: Ah. Thanks, Tim.

TIM: No worries, dude.
You deserve it, man.

What a car, eh?

FUZZ: Brilliant.
TIM: What a car.

NARRATOR: So what happened
to this groundbreaking car?

Well, in 1975, the E-Type
came out of production.

Gone forever?

Maybe not.

Because in 2013,
after a few misfits,

it had a grandson, the F-Type.

But does it deliver
the same exhilaration

that its granddaddy did
50 years before?

(engine revving)

Capable of naught to 60
in just over four seconds

and powered by a supercharged
five-liter engine,

the F-Type V8 S
has driven Jaguar

into the 21st century.

(engine roaring)

♪ ♪

TIM: Jaguar, by bringing
this car out,

for the first time
since the E-Type,

have now ditched,
as far as I'm concerned,

the old stigma of,
"Oh, it's an old man's car."

FUZZ: Yeah.

TIM: Not anymore, son.
Are you ready?

(engine revs)

(laughs)

(both laughing)

FUZZ: Honestly, that is
the first time in a car

that I have actually had
the collywobbles.

TIM: Really?

FUZZ: Butterflies,
total butterflies.

I was like...

(both laughing)

TIM: This is what it would
have felt like back in 1961,

when people saw the E-Type
for the first time.

People seeing this now
are feeling that same buzz.

FUZZ: Well, you know what?
I would still have an E-Type,

but I'd like one of these
in the garage next to it.

NARRATOR: Jaguar might only
push the boat out

once every 50 years...

FUZZ: Oh!

...but for the boys,
it was worth the wait.

So, with their
cobwebs blown away,

it's back to the workshop,

where Mick's Jag is going
at a much slower pace.

Much slower.

And at the halfway point,
if things don't speed up,

trouble will be brewing.

FUZZ: Look at that!

TIM: Yes! Look at that!
What a peach!

NARRATOR: When Tim and Fuzz

took on Jag-mad Mick's
48-year-old E-Type,

they had no idea

just what they were
letting themselves in for.

FUZZ: That is a car!
That is the car!

NARRATOR: Its owner
is a school caretaker

who has sadly developed such
a bad case of osteoporosis,

his spine
is literally crumbling,

which has made it
impossible for him

to fix up his dream classic.

MICK: I'd love it
back on the road.

It'd be my dreams.

It would be my whole world,
that would.

NARRATOR: But since getting
the car back to SOS HQ,

the boys have found
a mountain of work,

with botched bodywork repairs

and an engine and gearbox
leaking oil.

However, with just
a few days left

and E-Type parts
scattered across the floor,

it's time to start putting

this 48-year-old jigsaw
back together.

reveals exactly why there
had been so much thick filler

smeared all over it.

FUZZ: That is the worst bit
of welding I have ever seen.

TIM: Okay,
so it's going to need

a new bottom half
of the nose cone.

FUZZ: All right, well,
we need to get this in

and get it sorted out.

NARRATOR: So,
while the bonnet goes

straight into the bodywork guys
for a reshape,

Fuzz gets to work giving
that XK 4.2-liter engine

a full strip and service.

FUZZ: Now, this engine,

it's one of the first
twin overhead cam engines.

There's a cam shaft here
and a cam shaft there.

One operating
the exhaust valves,

one operating
the inlet valves.

This means there are
less moving parts

between the cam shafts
and the valves,

which made it more efficient
and a faster engine.

And it really is
a superb work of art.

I could actually
have one of these

sitting in the living room.

NARRATOR:

NARRATOR: David Manners
started his business

almost 40 years ago

and has become one
of the largest stockists

of Jaguar parts
anywhere in Europe.

TIM: I've got a long line
of E-Type parts we need to get.

NARRATOR: He's also
an old mate of Fuzz,

who is back at the workshop
looking over the Jag's engine,

which, as it turns out,
is in need of a bit of TLC.

FUZZ: These are all deposits,
all crystalline deposits

from mixtures of antifreeze
and probably a few things

to seal up leaky radiators,

and, uh, people just used to
fill them with water.

Of course it's created
this chemical mix of sludge.

Nowadays, we use distilled water
and proper coolant.

So what we'll do is we'll
clear out these water jackets

because these are here

to help cool the cylinder
head, the valves,

stop all of those seizing up.

What we definitely
don't want to happen

is for this engine to overheat
on its maiden run.

NARRATOR: At the spares shop,

Tim is ready to put a quite
shameless blag into action.

TIM: Wow! I'll tell you what,
I have missed this place.

I love it here.

Right, Fuzz told me
I must speak to you, David.

DAVID: Right.

TIM: He said, "David is
the coolest guy I've ever met."

TIM: I think the thing is
Fuzz has got this, like, um...

DAVID: Fixation with
a successful man.

TIM: Maybe. The bottom line
is he loves you.

DAVID: Well, we just work
nicely together,

and that's it, yes.

TIM: But, anyway, I need
a front exhaust manifold.

DAVID: Oh, yeah, okay. Yes. Yes.

NARRATOR: So, using
flattery to pave the way,

that bogus phone call from Fuzz

to complete his cunning plan.

'cause he can't afford them,
he hasn't got any money.

TIM: The problem is that
he won't be able to pay for them

TIM: I would, but I haven't got

where Dougal, the tire man,

with some spanking new treads.

DOUGAL: What you've got there
is a bit modern.

FUZZ: Yeah. Well,
it's wrong as well.

It's the wrong size, isn't it?

DOUGAL: It is. With an E-Type
Jag of that period,

some people like a fatter tire
to fill the wheel arches,

which is personal taste.

But when you go for
a lower profile one like that,

the gearing is out
and the speedo is out--

FUZZ: I know what you mean.

DOUGAL: But the fatter footprint
also makes the steering

a lot heavier and more vague.

What Jag fitted
was the Pirelli Cinturato.

FUZZ: Yep.

DOUGAL: This is it here.
It's a really evocative tire.

FUZZ: But looking
at these, together,

there's a massive
difference in size.

I mean, you know, that's...
That's an inch or two.

That means that
to go at the same speed,

this is going to have to turn
more quickly than that one.

DOUGAL: Yeah.

FUZZ: Because the wheel's
actually doing more revolutions,

but it's getting less far.

DOUGAL: You're not
getting as far

for your pound
of petrol either...

FUZZ: No, that's right.

DOUGAL: ...which isn't
very much.

I've got a bit of chalk,
let's do some science.

FUZZ: Okay.

Right. Okay, let's
try it out in practice.

Oh. Yep, there we go.

This one has already
turned one revolution,

whereas the original
equipment tire,

to get its one revolution
is about there.

So, what do you reckon?

DOUGAL: That looks like about
five percent more, doesn't it?

FUZZ: Yeah, so that's five
free miles for every 100.

DOUGAL: Yeah.

FUZZ: All right, well...
that's the way to go, isn't it?

DOUGAL: Superb.
FUZZ: Yeah, let's get them on.

NARRATOR: So, original,
taller, thinner tires

equals better economy
for the Jag,

and that's one more job
ticked off the list,

although there are still
lots more jobs that aren't.

With the Jag's maiden run
fast approaching,

the boys really
will have their work cut out

to finish on time.

The gearbox has now
been reconditioned,

but the engine is still

having its timing chain
and gaskets replaced.

And while the bonnet might
have regained its iconic shape,

it still needs paint.

Of course, the outstanding
question is, which color?

The car came in red
but was originally white.

Perhaps a visit from Mick's
wife and daughter

can help with the answer.

Of course, the last time
they saw his car,

it was all in one piece,

so with just
seven days to go,

they are going to be in
for something of a shock.

TIM: If you pull that blanket
off behind you, you will see--

KAREN: You are joking.

TIM: Pull that off.

TRISHA: This can't...no.

KAREN: Oh, my god.

This is not my dad's car.

TRISHA: That's Dad's car.

TIM: You recognize it?

TRISHA: Yeah,
that's the E-Type key.

That's the only thing
I recognize.

KAREN: It can't be the car.

TRISHA: It is.

TIM: And that's the engine.

And that's Phil.

TRISHA: Oh, bless.

KAREN: I've come down here
expecting to see my dad's car,

and I don't even recognize it.

It's just a shell.

TIM: Are you all right?
TRISHA: Yes.

TIM: Are you sure? Right.

NARRATOR:

TIM: So, so this car
was originally white,

so the question is...

KAREN: Would my dad want it,

NARRATOR: Well, deep red

Will Fuzz approve?

The date for the return
of the car is now locked in,

as Tim has booked
Leicester's main shopping mall

to display Mick's car

as a star prize
in a bogus raffle

in just seven days' time.

Mick is going to be dragged
to the shops by Trisha

for the surprise of his life.

That is, of course,

if the boys get the car
finished on time.

At least the girls
have confirmed

what color Mick prefers,
so at last this scruffy shell

can get that all-important
lick of paint.

Now, what does purist Fuzz,

who dreamed of
a factory-white car,

think of deep red?

TIM: Fuzzbot?

FUZZ: Yeah.

TIM: Dude, come and check
the paintwork on the E-Type.

Oh, yeah!

FUZZ: Fantastic.
TIM: Looking pretty slick.

FUZZ: Hold on,
it's supposed to be white.

That's plum!

TIM: That's the color
that they wanted.

FUZZ: Plum? They want it plum?
A plum E-Type?

I tell you what,
there's one plum in here,

and that's you, mate.

TIM: Are you saying
we should respray it white?

FUZZ: Yeah, white.
TIM: What?

FUZZ: White.
TIM: No.

FUZZ: White.

White.

TIM: Keep it plum. Done.

FUZZ: No, no, no,
we're going to go for white.

Have we got time to spray it?

MAN: No.

(exhales deeply)

NARRATOR: Well,
that's settled that, then.

Now, the E-Type might have

a beautiful
new plum-colored coat,

but that doesn't mean

that it's all plain sailing
from here.

Work is going full pace,

and the engine has now gone
back in the car,

but its rear axle is still
outside in the car park.

FUZZ: Dave's made a lovely job

of putting this rear axle
assembly back together.

Now, there is an
interesting little conundrum

with the back axle.

As you can see,
the disc brakes,

which are normally on
the outer edge here of the hub

are actually mounted
within this frame,

on the inside
of the rear-driven axle.

It means that access
to the rear brakes

is a little bit limited,

especially when bleeding
the brakes,

which has to be done
via some bleed nipples

that are situated
at the top, around here.

What we're going to do
is make a little modification

and make a pipe
that exits out here

so that the next person
to come along

can bleed the brakes more easily
when they have to.

Good work, Dave.

NARRATOR: And it's not long
before that rear assembly

is ready to go back on the car,

meaning that, bit by bit,
Mick's Jag is coming together.

The engine and gearbox
have been refurbed.

The work on the bonnet

and the rest of the body
is complete,

although not yet reassembled,

because the E-Type is
a notoriously complicated car.

And at the start
of the final day,

anxiety is starting
to fill the workshop.

FUZZ: We're literally hours away

from giving this car
back to Mick,

and look at it,
it's still in a thousand pieces.

Fingers crossed.

NARRATOR: Yes,
thousands of intricate parts,

and it's not always obvious
where some of them go.

Some are back on the car,
some are still on the floor,

but the real worry is that
some are still at the shops.

TIM: Where the hell
is this place?

NARRATOR: Tim is
on a wild goose chase,

trying to hunt them down.

TIM: This is ridiculous.

A six, eight, and ten mil
copper pipe, coil off.

NARRATOR: Yes,
Tim's shopping center deadline

has caught everyone out,
including himself.

And if he doesn't get

those easy-to-forget
last few bits sharpish,

the whole plan to give back
the car will collapse.

TIM: So, what happens
if you don't have them?

FUZZ: Then we can't have
any brakes on the car,

so the car's going nowhere.

TIM: Okay, I hear you
loud and clear.

I will get the parts.

FUZZ: See you in a bit. Bye.

TIM: All right, dude.
Bye. Love you. Bye.

NARRATOR: Late afternoon,
and back at the workshop,

it's as quiet as a library.

FUZZ: E-Types are
fiendishly complex cars.

This one's absolutely
no exception.

So many parts, so many tiny,
little adjustments.

It's really touch-and-go.

We won't know
whether anything's right

until we get the bonnet on.

If the bonnet fits,
we're laughing.

NARRATOR: Yes, but getting
the bonnet to fit

seems an awfully long way off,

especially as they
are still waiting

for Tim to come back
from his panic buying spree.

(clock striking)

TIM: I need
some copper brake pipe.

Okay, can I take
2 meters of 12?

MAN: Yeah.

TIM: What size are these ones?

I'm gonna get
some joining as well.

NARRATOR: It's now 5:00,
closing time,

and Tim has bulk-bought

just about every bit
he can think of, just in case.

But back at the workshop,

Tim's little bits are the
last things on anyone's mind.

TIM: Let me just show you
round this car.

The amount of work
we have to do is ridiculous.

Wiring loom, no connection.

Interior, there's no interior.

The doors, there are
no doors on it.

Windows,
there's no windows on it.

There's no bonnet on it,
there's no wheels on it,

there's no brakes on it.

There's no boot.

Fuzz.

FUZZ: Yeah?

TIM: How do you think
it's going?

FUZZ: I think
it's going quite badly.

I think we've been bitten
by the Jaguar.

Serious about that.

We might have to actually
push this one in.

NARRATOR: Saying it's going
to be a long night

would be an understatement.

Will the E-Type
be finished by morning

and reunited with
its unsuspecting owner?

If it is, it'll be nothing
short of a miracle.

It's a bright early morning

in the ancient city
of Leicester.

Those early-bird shoppers

are just starting
to fill the streets.

And at
the Highcross shopping center,

right in the middle of town,

there's a bit of a kerfuffle.

It's Mick's resprayed,
refurbed,

and fully restored E-Type Jag

being dragged,
kicking and screaming,

to the shops,
where in a few hours' time,

it will be reunited
with its unsuspecting owner.

FUZZ: What do you reckon?
TIM: Wow!

FUZZ: Doesn't it look stunning?

TIM: Fuzz, dude.

FUZZ: I'll tell you what--

TIM: That is
absolutely gorgeous.

FUZZ: And the color,
you got it right.

TIM: Mate, we did it.

FUZZ: But how are we going
to give it away?

TIM: Win this car!

I can feel the nerves
creeping up now.

for endless hours
of retail hell.

I just don't think it is.

MICK: I'm just gobsmacked.
This is everything I wanted.

To me, this is the world.
This is it.

I'll get rid of
all the other junk now.

Keep this nice in the garage
on its own.

TIM: And drive it.
