of turnover this year.

We've been hiring and firing.
Working here is not easy,

and we have a lot to do,
and you know, you need

good people
that you can count on.

We're like, at a pretty decent
point in the season

and starting
to pick up momentum.

We've got four
washplants running.

If we can keep the wheels
on the bus, you know,

we're in a very good place,
but it's going to take

a lot of effort and work
on everybody's part

in order to make that happen.

Halfway through the season,
Parker's already banked

over $18 million
worth of gold.

But recently, plant breakdowns
and spotty ground have seen

his gold numbers slow down
to less than 500 ounces a week.

[Parker] The gold weighs
needs improvement.

If it continues like this,
we're in real trouble.

I trust all our managers.

We have a really good group
of people.

And at Dominion this year,

Tyson is definitely doing
a really good job.

[Tyson] I have
the three washplants moved

and up and running here
at Dominion.

It's wild because of how busy
this place is right now.

There's a lot going on.

We got all our stakes
in the fire right now, so...

hopefully it doesn't
bite us in the ass.

After Tayvin's firing,
Dominion's foreman, Tyson Lee,

is down a loader-operator.

Now he needs to train up a
new hire to feed washplant Bob.

[Tyson] I have some time
to spend with India,

and get her
feeding the washplant.

India's been in a loader
for five, six days now,

and now it's about time
she learns how to feed a plant.

Working in the loader, in all
honesty, is pretty difficult.

In the Bridge Cut,
rookie India Greenhalgh has

less than a month's gold mining
under her belt.

You know, I've left one job that
I'm actually pretty good at,

starting a job that
I know nothing about.

It's not an easy thing to do,
but I want to be good at this.

I don't just want to be OK.
I want to be awesome.

While this is India's
first season mining,

it isn't her first rodeo
in the Yukon.

Hi, Tony!

For four years,
India worked behind the camera

with the "Gold Rush" film crew.

[India]
Historically, I've worked
on Tony's claims, but I did do

one stint on Parker's claim,

and that's how me
and Tyson met.

Hi.

[Tyson] Oh, thanks.

You know, I remember when
she first came to site here,

and I saw her right then
and there, and I thought,

"oh, I've got to get
to know her."

[India]
Whilst this is very different,
there was no real option for me

having a boyfriend
that lives in Canada.

A gold mine is definitely not
a place that I thought I was

ever going to find love,
but here I am.

I am loving it, quite frankly.

I'm loving love.

So watch what I do when I'm...

going to throw a scoop
in the hopper.

So you want to get
nice and straight

with the hopper first.

And then start lifting.
Same thing as a rock truck,

when you're loading
a rock truck.

You want to come in...

and then you want to aim
for the middle of the target.

See how I'm not spilling
any material off the back,

not spilling any material

And then when my bucket is
dumped all the way,

I'm lowering my boom,
lowering my center of gravity.

When you're running to the back
of the cut like this,

keep in mind there's no one up
at the plant right now.

From way back here,
I'm looking at the belts,

making sure there's material
going up them,

making sure
nothing looks askew,

making sure the tailings
conveyor is going.

Yeah, that makes sense.

You see something,
hit the breaker and run up

and open the bypass
and close the main.

-[banging]
-[India] Agh!

-What?
-Smacked my head.

Well, don't smack
your head then.

You're not a bobblehead.
[Tyson chuckles]

[rumbling softly]

So that's why

So just get nice and square
with the feeder first.

It's nerve-racking.

There's small adjustments.

Now slowly start dumping.

Once you've cleared
the hopper, boom down,

It's really
nerve-racking, actually.

I've got the world's

than it looks.

[Tyson] Keep doing this
for another four months.

It's very much on me to make
sure that this plant is running

as it should be.

Parker wouldn't have offered
her the job if he didn't think

she could do it.

Hopefully, in the upcoming
days, she'll be able to feed

the plant, run the plant,
shut down the plant,

and know how to problem-solve
around the plant.

We got less than 500 ounces
on the season right now,

and that's not nearly enough.

Well, we're back in
Vegas Valley, and that's where

we know the good gold is.

So we got to get back down
to the paydirt.

Three months in,
Rick Ness's season

is finally on the upswing.

Last week, we got a good
result from the last cleanup,

but that was the end
of the stockpile.

We didn't get down to pay
like we planned on.

I mean, there's a lot to do.

There's a big road to build,
and there's no more pay to run.

And yeah, we need to switch up
the plan right now if we're

going to get back to the pay
in Vegas Valley quickly.

Rick's crew has finished
building the road

to the bottom of Vegas Valley.

But now Rick faces
another problem.

There's a lot of slop
in there.

The whole cut's flooded
with silty, muddy [bleep].

We're going to have
to move it all

before we get back to the pay.

But getting it out of here
is painful.

I've got an idea.
It's a cheap way to move dirt.

And we tried this last year
in Rally Valley.

We actually had
some success with it.

And we're going
to try it again.

I think we learned stuff
last year.

So we got the monitor.

We're going to drop that into
Vegas Valley and get that slop

out of there
and get back on the gold.

At Vegas Valley, Rick's crew
has built a narrow road

to the bottom
of the 200-foot deep cut.

Now they've discovered the pay
layer they reached last year

is covered in six feet
of thick sludge.

Rick's solution?

Bring in a high-powered
water monitor

to blast the sticky sludge,

breaking it down
to a runny slurry.

Then suck it out
with a 12-inch water pump,

revealing the gold-rich pay
layer underneath.

[machine clanking]

Hey, guys, it's time to fire
this thing up and get the pay!

Hey, Chris, fire that pump up!
Let's go!

All right, starting
the pump now, Rick.

[pump revs up]

[Rick]
All right, here it comes.

[heavy swooshing, splatting]

We have the monitor
in place now.

We can use that to wash all
that silt over to our pump

and hopefully have the pay
clean in maybe a day or two.

We got a new guy here, Chris.
He's working that monitor.

We need all the manpower
we can get right now.

We got a long ways to go.

I have to pay close attention
to what I'm doing here.

Rick's brought in new
operator, Chris Lalonde,

for the season's
second half push.

With room for just one
excavator at the bottom of

the pit, clearing the sludge is
Chris's shot to prove himself.

[Chris] I'm originally
from Fort McMurray, Alberta.

I have spent the last five
or six years traveling around,

doing different jobs.
And now I'm here.

I feel like it's going good.

They are trusting me to try
and do this task alone.

[squelching]

It appears I'm losing my battle
at this moment.

The water level should
continuously drop.

Now it's increasing in my pond,

Guys, it looks like the pump
doesn't move the sludge.

The pump is failing to suck
out the slurry, and now...

there's an even bigger mess.

For some reason, it's stuck.

I don't know if we sucked up
a bunch of mud.

I don't know what the deal is,

but it ain't [bleep] working.
That, I know.

Shut it down!

-[Ryan] Am I good?
-[Kyle] Yeah.

[Ryan]
I'm gonna have to back up.

[Kyle] That's good.

[Ryan] Uh...

All we have is a steel plate
with holes welded into it.

So when we're washing all this
muck down in here, it easily

can get plugged up as soon
as any rocks, any silt,

anything gets stuck in this.

At Vegas Valley, Rick's crew
is battling a thick layer

of sludge to reach
the gold-rich pay.

But a plugged pump has brought
the operation to a standstill.

[Ryan] All right, well,
we could...

find or build a basket.

It's gonna give us a lot
more area for suction,

and then it's where we don't
have any problems

with anything clogging.

To get the pump sucking again,
mechanic Ryan Kent plans

to build a new intake basket
with bigger screens,

reducing the risk of blockages.

[cranking]

-Looks heavy.
-[Kyle] Yeah.

[Ryan]
Three dudes to move a plate.

[chuckling]

Right now, we're going
to look for some material

to build a basket.

We do have a bunch
of punch plate.

We could cut it out and weld
a square together.

Looks like Kyle may have found
a box over there.

-10 inch on it?
-[Kyle] Yeah.

We need a 12-inch.

Get rid of this.

-I'll make those work.
-[Kyle] I got it.

[banging]

[Ryan] Look at that!

Once we torch this off,

we'll weld the other one
right to it.

To fit the basket
to the pump's 12-inch hose,

Ryan first replaces the flange.

[Ryan] We got to build
our own [bleep].

That's what we're going to do.

Let's see if we can get her up
this direction.

Damn, you guys are strong.

Your moms must be proud.

The main piece we need is
this Victaulic right there.

[hissing]

see if it'll break free.

Now what we're gonna do is
put a bead around it.

we need to be able to get that

season mining.

I really enjoy everything
about gold mining,

season, but things weren't

going good, and then Nona
really, like, fired me.

I'm not sure why.

I started right off

Having struggled for crew
and gold all season,

second-year mine boss
Kevin Beets is slowly

turning a corner.

It was tough at the start
of the year to lose both

Brennan and Kayden.

And now Buzz is gone
to go have a baby.

But we brought in some new crew

and we're
making it [bleep] work.

Only thing you can do.

Going into the second half
of the season, I'm still

optimistic that we're going
to be successful.

I don't know if we're going
to be as successful as I want it

to be, but we're still going
for a 2,000-ounce goal.

We still want to get that.

Two weeks ago,
with his Pyramid Cut mined out,

Kevin broke ground on the new
seven-acre Sphinx Cut.

With everything now riding on
the new ground, Kevin's already

down to pay and feeding it
through the washplant.

I am hoping that Sphinx Cut
going to pay off better

than Pyramid Cut has been.

It's really important that
we hit our weekly target.

We're aiming for 100 ounces
a week, and to get there,

we've got to be running 24/7.

For his first night shift
of the season, Kevin pairs

just make sure we're staying
consistent and keeping

to help clear the blockage.

[Tayvin]
It looks like a big rock got
through the grizzlies.

I don't know how they managed
to make their way

through the grizzlies,
this [bleep] big,

and the grizzlies
are this [bleep] big.

[Tayvin]
I think we're gonna have to
get that big rock chained up

to the grizzlies.
-[Rick J.] Oh, yeah.

So use the power
of the grizzlies to remote

lift it enough at least
to get the dirt out.

-[Tayvin] Loosen up, hopefully.
-[Rick J.] Yeah, exactly.

[Tyler] Go on the top.

[Tayvin] Beauty.

[Tyler] Tayvin's going to jump
in there, poke around.

We're going to run the chain
through the top and wrap

the grizzly bars with
the chain, and we'll try

and give her a little jiggle,
see if we can pop it out

inside the feeder.

The grizzly bars on the feeder
screen out large boulders

to protect the washplant
from damage.

But months of wear and tear
have bent them out of shape,

creating holes.

A large rock has fallen
into the hopper,

blocking its feed conveyor.

The crew's quick fix?

Dig out a tunnel underneath
the 100-pound boulder.

Wrap a chain around it.

Then attach the chain
to the grizzlies and use

its hydraulic ram to lift
and free the rock.

[Tyler]
Here's the other side, Tayvin.

Pull that.

[Tayvin] OK.

[bleep] downtime, ugh.

-[Tyler] Get out of here.
-[Tayvin] Yeah.

[Tyler]
Drop the grizzlies back down,

and hook it to the grizzlies,

and try and pull it up.

[thrilling music plays]

-Keep tapping it up.
-Yeah.

[heavy rattling]

-[boulder crashes]

Big rock slipped

So we ended up tying a chain
to the grizzlies

and wiggling it up.

enough excitement for today,

so you may as well go
and get some [bleep] sleep.

Sounds like Tayvin had
a little excitement

for his first night shift.

the grizzly bars, good plan.

for his first night.

So I'm running Bob, and I have
been doing now for quite

a few days,

which means I'm down here
all by myself.

Obviously, I've got
to keep Bob fed.

I've got to make sure
that Bob doesn't [bleep] up.

With me being such a rookie,
it kind of terrifies me,

but I've got to learn these
things at the end of the day.

Since I've been here,
Tyson, when we go back home

of an evening, he's like an army
sergeant or something.

He's like, "What do we do
when there's something wrong

with the plant? What do we do?
What do we do?"

And I'm like,
"I run for the generator.

I hit the three-phase breaker."

And then he's like,
"What's next?"

And I'm like,
"I hit the bypass."

And he's like, "Good!"

[laughs]

[heavy thudding]

I just heard a big crash,

which is, yep,
there goes big rock.

If they make it out onto
the belt, I've got to make sure

that they go all the way up
and into the washplant.

If they don't go all the way up
and into the washplant,

that means they could be stuck
on the belt somewhere.

[heavy thud]

Two miles away...

[Tyson]
So, you know, right now
the plant pad up here

in the Golden Mile seems to be
coming along pretty good.

[phone chimes]

Hang on a sec, guys.

[mumbling indistinctly]

[ominous chord strikes]

I don't know what's going on,
but I just got a text

from India saying, "Help!"

Come on, Jarv.

The dog that appears
out of nowhere.

[India] Oh, [bleep]!

Oh, there's a big jamming
on the belt.

I've just had to shut down Bob.

[bleep]!
I mean, look at this.

There's a massive rock.

Humongous.

I really hope that's not
[bleep] up the belt.

with a jammed-up conveyor.

Every single minute counted,

so please try

All in all, I don't think that

was too much of a bad shutdown

And I'm glad that I broke
my shutdown virginity in a way

that nothing was damaged
and nobody was hurt.

I definitely think I gave Tyson
a little bit of a heart attack

there with that text.

Hopefully Tyson's heart is OK.

[chuckles]

Looking at it, like, I can see
the difference from

our start point to now,
and things are looking...

pretty peachy right now.

I guess that's
as low as she'll go.

In Vegas Valley, another new
hire has been working alone.
