sucked into a freak current.

And it wrecks in an
undiscovered tropical land

hidden among the
glaciers and mountains.

Leaving his crew behind
to mend the ship

Captain Periwinkle goes exploring.

And he has a number of adventures

one I recall has him climbing
across a bridge of living monkeys.

Then in a jungle clearing he finds
some remnants of civilization

an abandoned encampment.

Completely exhausted,
he goes to sleep there.

When he wakes up he sees
his crew in the distance

but they're upside down.

And that's when he realizes

he's crossed over to another earth

one that is attached to
our earth at the pole.

So this is like a joke story?

You see, this Periwinkle fellow and his
crew go deeper into this world

And soon find themselves
in a grand city

inhabited by an advanced

At first these people seem scary

but then it turns out
they're quite lovely

and just happen to be enthralled
with a terrifying, evil deity.

Superstitions aside

they guide the crew back to their
ship and repair it for them.

But before parting

these lovely people make the crew promise
not to tell anyone about their land

not to tell anyone about their land

or to ever return.

So they all go back to Australia

to their families and such.

But, as time goes on

each of the crew members finds
themselves haunted by this evil deity.

Haunted by nightmares and visions.

The ship's cook goes mad
and poisins his whole family.

And so the captain comes
up with a plot

to lure the evil spirit
back to the other world.

He reassmbles the crew and they
travel back towards Antarctica.

Only this time they can't
find the other world

and get stranded on an ice floe.

And that's when they realize

They didn't lure the spirit

It lured them.

Then what?

And he stays with different tribes
and learns their languages.

And collects their lore.

And they have these
marvelous tales

their religion, really

is all these stories about
nature and animals

and the way things have become.

Which is very different from saying
the way things have always been.

So they might have a story about

and I might be getting
some of this wrong

the Otter People.

So when you hear that you think

"Oh, the Otter People,

that must be a tribe like
the Crow, or the Bear."

So one day these Otter People

are walking around and
they just get very hot.

And you know they can't cool down
and it's just awful.

So they strip down

and get into this pool of black mud

and just roll all around in it.

And when they emerge

the sun bakes the mud
onto their skin.

And that's how the Otter
people became otters.

I think there's so much
wisdom in that.

Because it reflects how all of
life is about transformation.

And how energies all around
us drive those transformations.

Just because you′re born a human
doesn′t mean you might not become

an otter, or a rabbit...

or a mushroom.

Anyhow, that is not what
Mr. Boas was saying.

His point was that other geographers

and you know the common public

hear that story and they think

"Oh, those are just stupid Indians
and they don't know about science.

And when they saw an otter they just
naturally came up with that story

and it satisfied their curiosity

and that's been the
story ever since creation."

But what he discovered

is that those stories have histories

and they've travelled
from tribe to tribe.

And as they've travelled

they've transformed.

And that's the flow of wisdom.

Oh, and he says

when you look at a civilization
as it is right now

you don't see the depth of
possibility that's behind it.

Which is why he's measuring skulls.

You see Mr. Boas and his men
have been measuring the skulls

of thousands of kinds of people

to learn more about brain capacity.

And this idea that

one race is more capable of
intelligence than the others

there's scanty evidence to prove that.

Oh, and he says when other
scientists are studying Indians

they usually start with some
laws of psychology

and then try to fit the
Indians to those laws.

But he says we should just
approach each new tribe

one by one

as if there are no laws.

As if we know nothing.

See with Indians

if we look at them through European
eyes, we miss so much.

We are bound by our preconceived
ideas and expectations.

And if we want to learn
anything from the Indians

we have to let those go.

We need to strip away our
presumption of superiority.

Because our knowledge
is just so scanty.

We have to open our minds.

Maybe.

I will grant there is much more data to gather
concerning the North American Indians.

should abandon all knowledge
when approaching new phenomena.

We′ve already learned so much about

We've cataloged their natural abilities

and he forms hypotheses

that would then be tested

when new phenomena are
encountered in the field.

And that is called the
"Scientific Method".

You must have a hypothesis
to test against.

Otherise you're just accumulating
meaningless facts

The desert we are in
abounds with a life force.

the water flowing beneath the earth.

Allow these energies
to rise into you.

And to flow in

and out with your breath.

We sit

beside a house.

Think of its wood.

Though it is dead, there is still the
faintest trace of energy within it

like a subtle shadow.

The things that have
been have great energy

and we remain in their presence.

But they are separated
from our world as if

behind a screen.

This is the division
between life and death.

Let us gather the energy around us.

Let us send it to the division
between life and death.

It pools at the surface

and as we send more our
flow becomes a waterfall.

It swirls against the surface

shapeless, waiting to take form.

The spirits of this place need
our life energy to manifest.

of the Colorado River,

but our knowledge of this area

is actually quite primitive.

From where we stand we can
see two great mountain ranges

the Sangre de Christo's on our right

and the San Juan Mountains on our left.

And in front of us, they meet.

Creating a kind of hinge

which widens behind us in
an enormous flat expanse.

And this small incline where we
stand at the foot of the mountain

this is what we call an alluvial fan.

What was that word?

Alluvial fan, from the
movement of the waters.

What kind of waters?

Ah! Excellent question.

The answer is glaciers

huge formations of ice that
move under their own power.

As glaciers moved
down this mountain

they carried with them
huge deposits of sediment

spreading out into a
triangular fan formation.

However, this is not the cause of the
jagged shape of the Sangre de Christo′s.

Millions of years ago there
was a huge thrusting here.

A weakness in the earth

forced these mountains
thousands of feet into the sky.

And it is most likely

that the same rock at the
top of these mountains

can be found thousands
of feet below the earth

on the other side of the fault.

We must remember
that the earth

has not always been in the
same state as it is now.

In its beginnings, hundreds
of millions of years ago,

it was very very hot.

Imagine a smooth, round
grape turning into a raisin.

As it has cooled, it has contracted

sometimes violently

creating irregular formations.

Do you see how this mountain
is rounder than the others?

And there are hot
springs here, yes?

The roundness indicates
weakness in the structure

the many small fissures in this mountain
allow water to travel deep underground.

There they find a heat source

then travel back up
and form a hot spring.

Were these mountains
caused by thrusting?

No no, actually

these were caused by
another fascinating process.

At times the earth releases its
heat through violent eruptions.

You may have heard of volcanoes?

Or fire-mountains?

We are now walking
through a caldera

the vast mouth of a volcano.

And do you see that
mountain over there?

No, the other one.

Do you see how it
slopes outwards?

It was part of the boundary
wall of the volcano.

And there in the distance

It's sloping the other way.

Yes, that's part of the other wall.

And this volcano is actually
inside another, bigger volcano.

One so large we cannot see
the boundaries from here.

What do you call that
slender, craggy formation?

The force of the eruptions split
the earth into radiating dikes.

These dikes were then
filled with lava

which is harder than
the surrounding stone.

As the surrounding stone erroded

it left negative impressions.

Is that another dike?

And yet, the expression of geology
doesn't have to be so grand.

Do you see how the grasses
grow on this mountain?

in almost a grid-like pattern?

The vegetation is actually expressing

The underlying geology.

Everything in geology hids a mystery.

Thngs look this way because
the have to look this way.

It's as if nature was a painter.

Moving from execution to inspiration
and then back to execution

Creating a landscape.

And through science we can
rediscover the progress of the creation.

And what is this essence?

This back and forth power

That creates a painting
or a mountain...

Physical aspects of a deeper reality.

What is this if not The Spirit?

This is why, for me, the spiritual
isn't a queston of belief.

It's obviously real.
