out of the region.

the preacher and the law,

Tim and his best friend Tickle
stock their stash house

in advance of their first-ever
tariff-free deal

with a Canadian buyer.

Well, I mean,
a thousand gallons is a whole

lot of liquor.

I know, but normally,
you know, I don't really want

to stash all this
much together.

You know, you just kind of want
to settle it as you make it.

You know, right now,
all we're gonna do is get

the moonshine to
the stash house.

I think we're on probably
about the ninth or tenth load.

We may need one more load
to fill it up.

You know, it's been a long
journey, just to get to

this point.

You know, I'll just be glad
when we get done.

location to meet a nervous,

Closing a single high-volume
deal could keep their stills

churning out tax-free income
most of the summer.

and everything, but it's gonna

take us a pretty good while
to get this order run.

In Cocke County, Tennessee,

after a close encounter
with the law, returned them to

their backwoods roots,
Mark and Digger face

a new threat.

You can't blame a feller
for picking it up at that price.

$15 a gallon.

An unknown competitor
selling shine for nearly

half their price.

To win back their customers,
the Tennessee duo conduct

an experiment to crack
the low cost recipe,

hoping to produce their own
higher quality corn liquor

at a competitive price.

This thing looks
like chocolate gravy.

- Did you make any alcohol?
- My God, it's bitter as lye.

The market is totally
flooded with cheap liquor.

I mean, it's so cheap that
there's no way we can

sell ours.

You know, Digger and I never
cut corners on the quality of

the products we use in
our liquor, but here we've cut

every possible corner we can to
try to see if it's possible to

make a profitable $15 jar.

All right, let's cap her off,
get ready for the first one.

Lay it to it.

All right, corn syrup
and cornmeal.

We'll know here
in a little bit.

Yes, we will.

We got three test mashes made
with the cheapest ingredients

that we could find.

Cornmeal with corn syrup,
cracked corn, which is

scratch feed,
and liquid cane sugar,

and we have a sweet feed
with imitation pancake syrup.

So we're gonna run the ground
meal and the corn syrup

mash first.
- We got steam a comin'.

Woo, there'll liquor blowin' out
of there in no time.

If we can get that corn syrup,
it's little less than half what

grain sugar is.

If it wasn't more economical,
all these big industries makin'

soft drinks and candy
wouldn't use it.

Well, we got
liquor, Hattie.

We'll see if it's good liquor
or bad liquor here shortly.

What are we looking for
out of these runs?

Out of all three of them,
we want to see which one's

the biggest yield and which
one's got the best flavor.

If we can't figure out a way
to compete with this guy,

we're dead in the water.

I'm telling you,
that one's about to peter out.

All right, the corn syrup
and the corn meal is done.

Let's move on to cracked corn
and liquid sugar.

So, as we pull jars,
we're gonna put them on

their respective barrels,
let them wait there and rest

until the rest of it's run.

After that, we're gonna pick us
a sweet jar out of the middle

there in the hearts, taste it,
and see if we've got

good liquor.

Well, you know that scratch
feed Puss, that's about as

cheap a corn as you can get.

We're up to snuff here,
but there goes all

of our heads.
- Yeah, we've got
a plenty out of that.

Yeah, we won't have to
pitch no heads off of this.

Yeah, it's running

- Jimmy crack corn.

Jimmy makes liquor out
of crack corn, I start to care.

So now
it's just one more,

We're gonna run
the sweet feed mash next.

You know, if we end up with
three runs of dog piss here,

you know, I'll be at a complete
loss of how this guy's making

it so cheap.

Honestly and truly, this,
I mean, I'm going to shoot 100%

I mean, it ought to be
decent liquor.

It's got a hell of a lot better
nose on it than that cut little

fella right yonder does.

I don't know.

You know, this scratch feed
liquor, it's a tolerable drink.

But it's not something
that we want to endorse.

All right, the corn syrup
and the corn meal.

See if it tastes like
it's supposed to taste like.

It ain't up to snuff
with our white corn liquor,

but it's, it's OK.

This corn syrup liquor
with the corn meal,

it's OK, but it's still got
a little off note

in there somewhere.
You know, we're used to

making quality
liquor for people,

and they're used to paying
a premium price for it.

It's still not up
to our standards.

This $15 jar that Killer Beaz
sourced for us, there's no way

that they can sell it
for $15 a jar.

Ain't nobody run
this liquor around here.

This liquor's been run
someplace else.

I'm going to say we're not
looking at an old backwoods

liquor man.
We're looking at a damn thief.

We've got somebody that's either
stealing somebody else's liquor

that they're making
in the woods,

or they're stealing some
legal facility's liquor

out of their facility.

I think you're absolutely right.

But if we're gonna be
competitive, we need to

figure it out.

I don't have to move my still
site, it saves me a week or two

to get set back up.

a straight corn liquor run up,

and her sugar.

We're gonna set up two barrels,

us 100 gallons.

following the unwritten code to

seek a fellow moonshiner's
blessing before setting up

a new operation in their area.

taken me under their wing.

but respect for them.

into North Carolina,

So we are no longer
under the enterprises of

Mark and Digger this year,
and we got to find our own

still site somewhere far away
from Eastern Tennessee.

is get Mark
and Huck's blessing.

Mark and Huck have taught me
a lot of things about the ways

of the backwoods.

They were really my first
introduction into this

whole world.

operation has been

completely shut down.

Even across state lines,

the safest thing for us.

you could get much farther off

a beaten track in
North Carolina than where

we're at right now.

The good part about it
is security.

The bad part about it is,
it's hard to get to for you or

anybody else.

because we don't want to carry

The really cool thing
about this year is

this is our own still site.

It's just me and Kelly
making the liquor ourselves,

the way we want
to do it, selling it

the way we want to sell it.
So it's exciting,

but it's also
a little scary.

I think we're good

This still site is beautiful.

We're kind of in a ravine with
big slopes on both sides that

give us a lot of cover and we
have a really good source of

spring water that runs
right down the middle.

It's literally like this place
was just meant for us to put

a still in.

sure try not to suck up any mud,

but it feels good to be back
here grabbing some spring water

and making a corn mash.

Today, to keep it simple,
we're just gonna make some

good, old-fashioned,
corn liquor.

Corn liquor is the staple
around here in these parts.

Everybody drinks corn liquor.
You don't need a thermometer.

If you've got the water
going to a boil, then at

least you know...

...it's hot enough to
cook the corn.

It's quick, it works off fast,
and it'll give us good

volume back.

determined there's no way

that they can make
that corn liquor that cheap

with traditional mash
and ingredients.

You know, Amanda's palate's
awful damn sophisticated.

We need some help with this.

to sell any of our liquor

because of this corn liquor
that's been flooding

our market everywhere.

Prices got so low
that it's ridiculous.

Kelly and Amanda are
probably our closest allies

in the moonshine world.

And, you know, I would like

on what they think it is.

I mean, you know,
we said we wouldn't be in touch

GNS.

GNS, or grain neutral spirit,
is a mass-produced alcohol made

with a base of grains,
but it's been distilled to such

a high proof that
it's essentially

odorless and flavorless.

GNS is a commercial commodity
used by some mass market liquor

brands to produce inexpensive
versions of traditional

spirits, like vodka and gin.

But by law, purchasing GNS for
commercial use requires

a federal permit,
and the federal government

mostly tracks inventories of
GNS nationwide.

If it's GNS at 190 proof
and they're proofing it down,

and they can put two drops
of corn flavoring in it,

or they could do, I mean,
there's so many different ways

you could get there.

Yeah, how else could they
sell it for that cheap?

Nobody can sell it that cheap,
Amanda, you know that.

We've got our still site set up
and we just mashed in

corn liquor, so run it,
don't run it?

You have to run it
because your money's done spent.

But I wouldn't build
no more mash back.

I wouldn't sweeten them
fermenters back in.

I'd wait till we figure out
where this is coming from.

The reason I use wood
instead of propane is

it was the way I learned
how to run liquor.
