Eyewitnesses claim
a paranormal battle

is taking place.

Here's all this spiritual
traffic that make this ship

more of a beacon.

Things that don't belong here.

Are the spirits of its fallen
sailors still protecting

this ship, even in death?

She's in need of medical
attention on her right arm.

Right arm!

Phil and Heather
will go to war...

Oh, boy.

...with the horrors
of the Hornet.

What the?

All right, guys, how do we feel
about boats?

I feel great about boats,
as long as they float.

Am I gonna need Dramamine?
What are we talking about here?

No Dramamine, but we need
to pack all our paranormal gear.

I have a lead on an amazing
paranormal hotspot that has

slithering shadow figures,
disembodied voices, people even

report being choked there,
and a whole heck of a lot more.

So, ghosts on a boat?

Well, a ship, and that ship
is the USS Hornet.

It's a decommissioned aircraft
carrier that's moored

in San Francisco Bay,

and it saw a ton of action
during World War II.

And the people that maintain it
today say that it's still fully

crewed with spirits.
- Ooh.

First of all, excellent
naval knowledge, Heather.

And the USS Hornet is
a ship indeed.

It has one of the most famous
lineages of the whole US fleet.

And considering all
of the action that it saw

and all of the blood spilled,
I can certainly see

how the USS Hornet may have gone
from glory to ghost story.

March 15, 1944.

At the height of World War II,

the newly-commissioned aircraft
carrier USS Hornet CV-12

set sail from Pearl Harbor
to join the conflict

now raging
in the Pacific Ocean.

Nearly 900 feet long,

this cutting-edge Essex-class
carrier has 18 decks,

1,000 rooms, seven galleys,

a hospital, a barbershop,
even a jail.

It isn't just a warship.

It's a floating city of steel,
home to 4,000 crewmen,

along with 100 fighter planes
and dive bombers.

During the following 16 months
of continuous, furious combat,

the Hornet plays a pivotal role
in the battles of Leyte Gulf,

Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Its air group shreds Japanese
fighter planes,

knocking 668 enemy aircraft
out of the sky.

And blowing up another
742 on the ground.

Meanwhile, her Avenger
torpedo bombers

send 73 ships to watery graves.

The Hornet dodges torpedoes

and endures constant strafing
runs, plus kamikaze attacks.

Many of her brave crew
will die, pilots launching

fearlessly into battle,
never to return.

While on deck, crewmen succumb
to shrapnel and bullet wounds.

All told, more than 300 crew
die on the ship,

with another 50 airmen
killed in action.

After bringing home hundreds
of wounded soldiers

at the conflict's end,
the warship is eventually

decommissioned in 1970.

In the late 1990s,
the Hornet is saved

from the scrapyard
and transformed

into a floating museum
moored in Alameda, California.

Almost immediately,
restoration workers and guides

begin to report terrifying
paranormal encounters.

Ghostly sailors are regularly
seen on the hangar deck

and charging through the ship's
claustrophobic corridors.

The activity only seems to be
increasing, with many guides

convinced there are more than

just the spirits of former
sailors on board.

There are repeated sightings
of a terrifying crawling figure

near the admiral's quarters.

And claims of an entity that
chokes visitors in an area

known as the fo'c'sle.

Has the Hornet's crew
really returned to duty

for one last war?

And are the living the enemy?

So my grandfather served
in the Pacific

on the USS Montrose.

His stories really stayed
with me.

It's not a stretch at all
to think that the energies

of those that served and died
on the Hornet

are still imprinted
on it somehow today.

And you know,
it's the imprint

that I'm interested in too,

but in a different
sense of the word.

Because think about it, this is
a vast metal construction

that has been imprinted
or degraded by age and war.

So it seems like people
who visit there could easily be

overwhelmed by this unusual,
claustrophobic space

and its history.

So maybe it's not ghosts
they're experiencing,

but the atmosphere.

OK, so a not-so-ship-shape
ship, Phil.

Yeah.

All right, so look,
whether it's the environment

or what happened
in that environment,

that's what you have
to find out.

So calibrate your latitude
and longitude and plot a course

for the USS Hornet to discover

if she has truly been boarded
by spirits.

After a six-hour flight
from New York to San Francisco,

Phil and Heather take
to the water, charting a course

for the USS Hornet.

- Is that it?
- That's it.

Wow, that thing is massive.

We've arranged to meet
with the ship's docents,

Tracy Newby,

Faye Navarro,

Heidi Schave,

and Kris Schave.

Between the four of them,
they've spent over 50 years

working on the USS Hornet.

Lovely to meet y'all.

Well, this is incredible.
So this is the hangar?

Yes.

We did our best researching
this ship before we got here.

It has a long,
decorated history,

so I just want to get
right to it.

Do you think the USS Hornet
is haunted?

- Yes.
- Why?

Some of us have been touched
in ways we can't explain.

I was working in security
at the time, and we had reports

of some teenagers messing around
in the fo'c'sle,

where the anchor chains are,

and I would go up
and check it out.

And as I was climbing up
the ladder,

I felt a constriction
around my throat.

When you say "constriction,"
do you mean it just felt kind

of tight in your throat?

No, I felt like someone
or something was choking me.

Like there was a rope
around my neck.

Oof!

I experienced something
kind of creepy.

We were up in the admiral's
quarters, and I was looking

down the passageway, and I kept
seeing someone peering out

out of this one opening.

And then I saw like a hand,
another hand, a head peer out,

and I'm just staring
at this thing.

It just looked like it was
like a person in the dark,

just a shadow crawling across
the floor and then vanished.

- That's creepy.
- Wow.

We have so many people that
experience the crawling spirit,

so that's why we call
it the "Crawler."

So the USS Hornet
is a huge ship.

- Where else should we look into?
- Sick bay.

I've seen actual poltergeist
activity down there.

The pharmacy closet door
was opening and shutting...

...violently by itself.

And I just stood there
in shock.

That was crazy.

So, also in sick bay,

sometimes people will lay
on the operating table.

And I had someone actually
do it and ask for help.

Like, "Hey, I need help.
Grab my leg."

And you can actually see
an imprint of a hand

on the sweats.

You think that's a ghost medic
going to help that person?

- I say so, yeah.
- Wow.

Anybody else had encounters
that they can't explain it?

I've seen full-bodied
apparitions of men in uniforms

walk into walls.

Many years ago, when I first
started working here,

I took a picture
of the admiral's bridge.

I've actually caught a ghost
in a photograph.

- Do you have the photo?
- It's right here.

Wow.

You're telling me there was
no one there?

Not when I took that, no.

It looks a lot like
Admiral Joseph "Jocko" Clark,

who was here in 1944.
- Admiral Jocko Clark?

Yes, that is who
I think it is.

And he was actually really
beloved among the crew.

When he got here,
one of our captains was

Captain Browning.

Two guys fell overboard,
and he didn't turn around

the ship to get them,
and Clark was actually the one

that reprimanded him
and got him removed.

That's why the men really
followed him well.

Admiral Jocko Clark is one
of the legendary spirits

of this ship, and we believe
he's still here with us.

I think he's still in command.

and replicate the ghostly photo
Heidi took of the bridge.

Enemy flying overhead,
planes zipping off

that Tracy said
he started feeling

like he was being choked.

And up I go.

I think it just can't reach
through the ship.

I search the passageways
all around the fo'c'sle

for the source of the scream,
but find nothing.

Eventually, I end up back
in Heather's walkie range.

- Heather, do you copy?
- Yeah, I copy.

- What's up?
- Finally.

Are you guys OK?

We've gotten
a lot of activity up here.

But yeah, we're all OK.

I heard someone yell like
they just got injured.

That's wild.
We need to regroup.

- Let's meet in the sick bay.
- OK, I'll see you there.

Phil.

So, you're telling me
you didn't hear that?

- Everyone's good?
- No, everyone is good.

You said you heard someone
screaming in pain?

Yeah, that's what it
sounded like.

And when the USS Hornet
was in action...

There would probably be
a lot of injured

screaming for help
in sick bay.

Remember that story

violently by itself.

been a reflection of the light,

and just my eye playing a trick
on me, but it looked like

there was someone down there.

- This is the surgical suite.

I'm telling you,
whatever I just saw

darted into this room.

Wow, this is an original
operating room.

Remember what Faye said.

She's brought guests in here
that have laid on this gurney

and felt a medic's hands
on them.

She even saw the imprint
of a hand.

Well, supposedly, sure.

I want to test it out,
but I want to borrow

from the Estes method.

Here's what I'm thinking.

You communicate with the medic,
and I'm the patient.

I'll lay down on this gurney
with noise-canceling headphones,

blindfold on, and let's see
if I feel anything.

the medic what's wrong

in one of the sick bay bunks,

I head up to a stateroom
on the 02 level

where shadow figures
have been reported.

We both set up REM pods,
handy cams, and recorders

to catch any unusual activity.

REM pod's going off
like crazy.

Heather, wake up, wake up.

Phil, what's going on?

There's something about
this sick bay, Heather.

I'll give you one reason.

That was really,
really spooky.

for how that happened.

After a night I'm not eager
to repeat, I want to learn more

about the history
of the Hornet.

Bruce Douglas knows this ship
better than anyone

because he served on board
in the 1960s.

This room is incredible.
Where are we right now?

This is Combat Information
Center, CIC for short.

It's like the nerve center
of the ship.

Here they keep track
of everything that's going on

around the ship, underwater,
on the surface, and in the air.

Unbelievable.
And you actually served

on this ship during
the Vietnam War?

Yes, I was on board
from late 1968

through decommissioning in 1970.

Well, thank you
for your service.

And I got to know,
the USS Hornet has gained

a reputation as being
a very haunted ship.

Yes.

Do you think what most people
hear and assume are ghosts

is really just an old ship

creaking and moaning
a little bit?

That would
be plausible.

But as far as actual
voices and footsteps,

I can't explain those.

Are there any stories that
stand out to you that you say,

"Well, that one
I can't explain"?

One story in particular,
one of the ladies that works

on the ship that I know,

she was down
in aft auxiliary.

It's very near the bottom of
the ship, below the waterline,

an area that's not open
to the public.

And she heard a growling noise
down there.

A growling noise?

That's how she
described it, yes.

It really affected her.

It really made
an impression on her.

So it scared her?

It did stick
with her, yes.

But there's nothing in there
that functions anymore that

would even move at all that
might cause a growling noise.

If I wanted to look
into this growling noise

in the aft auxiliary,
how would I get down there?

It's probably pretty close
to the bottom of the ship.

You'd have to go down
an elevator shaft.

The elevator no longer works.

You'd have to have a rope
and rappel down.

- OK.
- But don't look down.

I've arranged to meet
with docent Stacy Meyn.

Well, I can't wait to chat.

She leads night tours
of the ship and believes

she's encountered terrifying
paranormal activity.

Tell me about the most intense

experience you've ever had
on the ship?

So, this was the 02
ready room.

The pilots would get
their briefings,

and one of
the guests called out,

"I see a shadow figure
in the passageway."

So, I went out
into the passageway.

I looked towards the back
of the ship, and in my face was

a shadow figure approaching.

Got out of the way
just in time, whoosh,

and then disappeared
down the hall.

Male, slender,
moving with a purpose.

- Were you scared?
- I was startled.

- That was a first for me.
- That's incredible.

As we continue to investigate,

where would you
recommend we go?

The 02 ready room
and radio central.

OK.

So, what was radio central
used for?

So, that was the communication
nexus for the ship.

And if you're fighting a war,
that had to be the most

protected place on
the entire ship.
- One of them.

- Absolutely.
- Why is this ship
so active?

There is a constellation of
things that make this ship--

We say it's a portal.
I think it's more of a beacon.

We're in salt water.
We're in a fault line.

And there's the antennas
up above.

- The antennas still work?
- Some of them still do.

- OK.
- They're still connected.

So, here's all this spiritual
traffic coming in,

you know, good,
bad, indifferent.

Things that don't belong here
find the beacon and come in.

But the sailors,
they will always protect.

They will always
guard the ship.

So, the spirits of sailors on
this ship kick off any entities

that don't belong.
They're fighting a war.

Ultimately, yes.
They're guardians.

And the job is never done
protecting the ship.

The idea that
the spirits of the sailors

are protecting the ship
from something far darker

really resonates with me.

With that in mind, Phil and I
split up to try and prove

what's happening on the Hornet.

I head up to the ready room on
the 02 deck, where Stacy had

her disturbing shadow
figure encounter.

Meanwhile, Phil gets ready to
rappel down the elevator shaft

leading to the aft auxiliary
deck, investigating the strange

growls heard deep
within the ship.

Bombs away.

We'll aim to meet back up
at the radio room at midnight,

where I want to harness
the power of the ship's antenna

as a paranormal beacon.

on the job, huh?

So it's about 70 feet down.

That's a heck of a drop
down there.

Ah!

OK, that was a little scary.

I'm about to enter
an area of this ship

that has been closed off
for quite a while,

so I have no idea
what I'm up against.

But it is now time to enter
the belly of the beast.

Here we go.

So, this is aft auxiliary.

This is where, according
to Bruce, someone down in here

heard what sounded
like a growl.

I'm gonna get out the FLIR.

So, most of this room
looks pretty cool.

What is that?

Getting some heat signature

off these pipes here.

Yeah, starting to feel a little
bit out of breath.

Got to check the air quality.

Oxygen levels are good.

Carbon monoxide levels
could be better.

The way it can affect you
at those low doses is making

you dizzy, confused,
possibly see things,

and maybe even hear things.
Numbers are going up.

I don't want to spend
too much time down here.

So, yeah, got to make
this quick.

Stacy was in the ready room

when one of her guests saw
a shadow figure cross by.

This is where the pilots
would have gotten

their mission briefings before
taking off into action.

A lot of those pilots never
returned from those missions.

But they would have had to wait
sometimes for hours

in this spot.

So I brought some trigger
objects to see if I can

spark any activity.

We've got 1940s playing cards

issued by the US Navy.

1940s dominoes,

because they needed activities
to pass their time.

This is a motion-activated
record player.

Anything gets
anywhere near to it,

it's gonna start
playing a record.

But the second I talk
inside of it, listen to that.

It's picking up a lot
of the lower tones and making

those vibrate more
than the higher tones.

So let's say some water
flushes through this.

Maybe the lower tones of that
water flushing through

are getting amplified
and resonating through this,

shooting out into aft auxiliary,

and the effects of carbon
monoxide adds a whole new

element in sounding
like a growl.

Stacy said that the most
intense experience she ever had

was that shadow figure
barreling down the hallway.

for spirits to constantly use.

understanding the activity

Just before midnight, I climb
back up to the flight deck

and head to radio central

to regroup with Heather
like planned.

Wow, look at this equipment!

This is crazy.

Oh my gosh.

Oh, this must have been
cryptography in here.

- Top secret, look at that.

If these walls could talk...

They could-- whoa!

What the?

Over its years of service,
the USS Hornet welcomed

many legendary guests,
from presidents to astronauts.

But arguably the most
remarkable visitor was a gaunt,

wild-eyed man
named George Tweed,

also known as the Ghost of Guam.

When Japan invaded
the US territory of Guam

in 1941, Navy sailor Tweed
fled into the jungle.

He then spent a harrowing
31 months evading the Japanese,

who were desperate
to capture him.

After three years of remaining
invisible to the enemy,

he was finally rescued
by US troops

and brought aboard
the USS Hornet.

Dumbstruck sailors
described him as "deathly thin,

"pale as a ghost, carrying only
a bloodstained machete

"and a bundle
of handwritten notes

detailing enemy positions."

American forces used
that very intel to retake Guam,

and Tweed was awarded
the Legion of Merit.

Not bad for a so-called ghost.

There's so much activity

and so many different
types of activity.

And it does seem like they are
still protecting the ship.

disturbing answers.

But none were more unsettling

First, to the good, was there
any evidence of positive

paranormal forces
on the Hornet?

photos Phil took on the bridge.

None of his reflected light

replicating the clearly-defined
shape our witness captured.

was a manifestation

all the more shocking.

She noticed the appearance
of the lines coincided
