00:09:43: to a certified jazz freak into Coltrane and Mingus.

00:09:59: Jim says they need more songs
00:10:00: and tells everyone to write one over the weekend.
00:10:05: Only Robby does his homework.

00:11:35: and convinces her boss to hire The Doors
00:11:37: as The Whisky's house band.
00:11:40: In late 1966, they're opening for The Turtles,

00:12:10: and find him out of his mind on acid.
00:12:16: When they get him back to The Whisky,
00:12:18: Jim wants to play The End,
00:12:19: a song he wrote about breaking up with his high-school girlfriend.
00:12:24: The Killer Awoke Before Dawn,
00:12:27: He Put His Boots On.
00:12:30: He Took A Face From The Ancient Gallery And He
00:12:35: He Walked On Down The Hallway, Baby!
00:12:45: Came To A Door
00:12:48: And He Looked Inside.
00:12:56: No one in the band knows where he's going.
00:13:04: Father?
00:13:07: Yes, Son?
00:13:11: I Wanna Kill You.
00:13:23: Mother...
00:13:27: I Want To...
00:13:30: Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, Fuck You All Night, Baby!
00:13:36: Fuck You, Mama, All Night Long!
00:13:40: You Wait, Mama!
00:13:42: Gonna Love You, Baby, All Night, Yeah!
00:13:48: The Whisky's owner calls Jim a "sick bastard"
00:13:51: and fires them.
00:13:59: A few weeks later,
00:14:00: The Doors record their first album in five days.
00:14:04: Holzman brings in veteran producer Paul Rothchild.
00:14:08: The equipment he uses is state-of-the-art -
00:14:11: a 4-track recorder.
00:14:13: He lays down John's drums on one track.
00:14:16: Ray's organ and Robby's guitar take up the second.
00:14:20: The third goes to Jim's vocal,
00:14:21: leaving the fourth for all overdubs.
00:14:31: Light My Fire and The End are over seven minutes long.
00:14:35: Both are recorded in two takes.
00:14:39: At Jim's insistence,
00:14:41: all songs are credited simply to The Doors.
00:14:45: To promote the album,
00:14:46: Holzman buys a billboard on The Sunset Strip.
00:14:49: No one has done this before.
00:14:51: Break On Through is their first single.
00:14:54: It stalls at number 106.
00:14:58: Holzman shifts quickly to Light My Fire.
00:15:02: Rothchild cuts the instrumentals, and the song hits the AM airwaves.
00:15:07: In July of 1967,
00:15:09: the first song Robby Krieger ever wrote climbs to number one in the country.
00:15:16: Ray and Dorothy hear it on their car radio and start screaming.
00:15:23: The first royalty checks give The Doors $ 50,000 apiece.
00:15:29: Morrison's family is oblivious
00:15:31: until a friend of his younger brother comes over with the album.
00:15:36: He thought the guy on the cover looked a little like Jim.
00:15:40: The family is further surprised
00:15:41: when they see how Jim has described them in his bio.
00:15:47: Holzman sends The Doors to New York City.
00:15:49: They're an immediate hit.
00:15:52: Andy Warhol becomes infatuated, particularly with Morrison.
00:15:58: Then, like The Beatles and Rolling Stones before them,
00:16:01: they perform live on The Ed Sullivan Show.
00:16:04: - Now The Doors!
00:16:05: Here they are with their newest hit record,
00:16:08: Light My Fire!
00:16:11: Time To Hesitate Is Through,
00:16:14: No Time To Wallow In The Mire.
00:16:18: Try Now, We Can Only Lose
00:16:22: And Our Live Become A Funeral Pyre.
00:16:26: Come On, Baby, Light My Fire.
00:16:34: Try To Set The Night On... Fire!
00:16:39: Sullivan asks The Doors to take out the word "higher"
00:16:42: because of its drug implications.
00:16:45: They agree.
00:16:47: During the performance,
00:16:48: Jim sings the song exactly as written.
00:16:51: Girl, We Couldn't Get Much Higher.
00:16:54: Come On, Baby, Light My Fire.
00:17:02: Try To Set The Night On Fire!
00:17:13: Try To Set The Night On... Fire!
00:17:19: It's been barely a year
00:17:20: since their shy young singer couldn't even face his audience.
00:17:24: Now, the metamorphosis is complete.
00:17:56: - Need A Match?
00:18:00: "As I look back over my life,
00:18:04: I'm struck by the postcards,
00:18:09: ruined snapshots,
00:18:12: faded posters of a time I can't recall".
00:18:29: French officials deny any evidence of drug overdose,
00:18:32: but a cloud of mystery hangs over Morrison's death.
00:18:35: Some claim he's still alive and that his death was just a hoax,
00:18:39: perhaps planned by Morrison himself.
00:18:42: Numerous sightings of the singer have already been reported.
00:18:45: No, the mood I get from most of itNis a kind of a heavy...
00:18:50: Kind of a sort of gloomy feeling, you know.
00:18:58: Like of someone not quite at home
00:19:00: Or, you know, or not quite... Not quite relaxed, and...
00:19:05: You know, aware of a lot of things
00:19:07: but not quite sure about anything, you know?
00:19:12: People Are Strange
00:19:14: When You're A Stranger.
00:19:16: Faces Look Ugly
00:19:18: When You're Alone.
00:19:20: Women Seem Wicked
00:19:22: When You're Unwanted.
00:19:24: Streets Are Uneven
00:19:27: When You're Down.
00:19:28: When You're Strange,
00:19:30: Faces Come Out Of The Rain.
00:19:34: When You're Strange,
00:19:37: No One Remembers Your Name
00:19:40: When You're Strange,
00:19:44: When You're... Strange.
00:19:52: The fact is, the music is strange.
00:19:56: It is music for the different, the uninvited.
00:20:00: It carries the listener into the shadowy realm of dream.
00:20:11: Part of the strangeness comes from their lack of a bass player.
00:20:15: This leaves Densmore to hold the beat.
00:20:18: But his jazz sensibility keeps it both tight and unpredictable.
00:20:28: Krieger's flamenco influences bring another layer of mystery.
00:20:32: He never uses a pick,
00:20:33: playing rhythm and lead with his fingernails.
00:20:39: But the sound needs a bottom.
00:20:41: Manzarek discovers an electric piano bass
00:20:44: and plays the bass line with his left hand.
00:20:47: He uses his right for chords and his Bach-tinged blues runs.
00:21:06: The organ carries a hint of the carnival -
00:21:08: both childlike and darkly disturbing.
00:21:12: It's no accident their second album, Strange Days,
00:21:15: features circus performers on its cover.
00:21:49: But if the band has a surreal fairground air,
00:21:52: it is Morrison who is the frenzied trapeze artist.
00:22:05: Love Me Two Times, Baby, Love Me Twice Today.
00:22:12: Love Me Two Times, Girl, I'm Goin' Away.
00:22:19: Love Me Two Times, Girl,
00:22:22: One For Tomorrow, One Just For Today.
00:22:28: Love Me Two Times, I'm Goin' Away.
00:22:35: To Ray, he's like an ancient shaman,
00:22:38: leading his followers into worlds they'd never dare enter alone.
00:22:43: I Could Not Speak.
00:22:46: Love Me One Time,
00:22:50: Yeah, My Knees Got Weak.
00:22:54: Love Me Two Times, Girl,
00:22:56: Last Me All Through The Week.
00:23:02: Love Me Two Times, I'm Goin' Away.
00:23:20: Morrison is both innocent and profane.
00:23:23: He's a rock and roll poet,
00:23:26: dangerous and highly intelligent.
00:23:31: No one has had this exact combination before.
00:24:14: No matter how high he flies,
00:24:17: his bandmates are always there
00:24:18: to catch him and guide him back to earth.
00:25:12: Their first hit of fame is sudden and intense.
00:25:17: - I even like them more than The Beatles!
00:25:19: - The Doors, they are so much better!
00:25:26: - Do you think you're a political group?
00:25:28: - We're, um...
00:25:30: Foremost, we're, um... Musicians and writers.
00:25:38: - No, you can't take a lit cigarette. Sorry.
00:25:41: - I'll see how I feel after a beer.
00:25:43: - You want people to like you?
00:25:45: - Well, I'd like them to listen.
00:25:48: I'd like them to... Give the music a chance, and...
00:25:58: Just to listen.
00:26:05: - The music can't help
00:26:07: but reflecting things that are happening around you.
00:26:12: - I think for your own sake,
00:26:13: while all the police are out there containing the kids,
00:26:15: you ought to get in the car and split. I really do.
00:26:19: Unless he wants to get...
00:26:21: Yeah, I mean, it's up to him.
00:26:25: It's up to him, unless he wants to...
00:26:28: Have them grab at his body.
00:26:32: - If he doesn't want it, I'll take it.
00:26:35: - And Bill and Todd will take the leftovers.
00:26:44: - Aloha!
00:26:57: - I've noticed that when people are joking,
00:27:00: they're usually dead serious.
00:27:02: And when they're dead serious, it's usually pretty funny.
00:27:05: - You should say that at a concert.
00:27:08: - Is your band like The Monkees?
00:27:11: - The Monkees?
00:27:12: - I said like The Monkees.
00:27:19: - All of our music is really so
00:27:22: symbolic rather than direct to the point, you know...
00:27:28: - Everybody's always talking about
00:27:31: rock and roll and jazz finally blending, you know...
00:27:38: And I don't think that can really happen, but...
00:27:41: If it's supposed to, I think we're it.
00:27:47: - OK, this time, can you look to me, please?
00:27:51: - I want to touch The Doors!
00:27:54: - Hey, quit knocking on the door. Hey!
00:27:57: - Can you get Jim out?
00:27:59: Come on, just take one picture.
00:28:01: - We paid to be here!
00:28:04: Most of the attention goes to Jim.
00:28:07: If it bothers Robby, Ray or John,
00:28:10: they don't outwardly show it.
00:28:13: But Jim relishes the attention.
00:28:18: He seems to have been born instantly ready for fame.
00:28:29: Everything he does seems either brilliant
00:28:32: or brilliantly calculated for effect.
00:28:37: - I think, you know, these days,
00:28:41: especially in The States, you have to be
00:28:46: a politician or an assassin
00:28:48: or something to really be a superstar.
00:28:54: Without a personal manager or publicist,
00:28:56: Jim takes control of his own image.
00:28:59: He picks out all his clothes,
00:29:01: from the conch belts to the leather pants
00:29:03: seemingly designed to accentuate his crotch.
00:29:14: - Hi! Hi, Jim!
00:29:18: - We're gotta go to the... dressing room, right?
00:29:22: - All right, man.
00:29:23: - OK, we're going to go to the dressing room now.
00:29:28: - Wait a while, don't get out yet.
00:29:31: He understood exactly how to make it all work for him,
00:29:34: and perhaps to protect himself,
00:29:36: he made it seem like he couldn't care less.
00:29:46: In 1968, The Who opened for The Doors at The Singer Bowl on Long Island.
00:29:51: - Don't go in, we need you.
00:30:11: - How much are these?
00:30:12: - $ 1.
00:30:14: - Can I look at it first to see what I want?
00:30:20: I've got one.
00:30:24: How much are those?
00:30:26: - $ 1. - $ 1?
00:30:28: It's hard to tell if he's simply mingling with his fans
00:30:31: or if he's drawing something crucial from them,
00:30:34: as if he needs their attention to survive.
00:30:38: - Make sure that The Doors know
00:30:41: that New York collectively welcomes them at The Singer Bowl.
00:30:45: The Doors! The Doors!
00:30:58: The Singer Bowl crowd is already worked up.
00:31:01: Morrison stokes them further.
00:31:03: No One Here Gets Out Alive Now.
00:31:08: You Get Yours, Mama, I'll Get Mine.
00:31:14: Gonna Make It, Baby... Come On!
00:31:18: Someone throws a chair.
00:31:29: - Everybody feel all right?
00:31:34: - The show is over, kids, so go on home.
00:31:37: Yes, please, go home.
00:31:45: - Give him a hand and help him if she's too heavy. Stay where you are.
00:31:50: - No, she's...She was just an innocent bystander.
00:31:54: - That became a victim.
00:31:55: - And someone whacked her with a chair.
00:31:56: - Why'd they whack her with a chair? - I don't know.
00:31:59: - Are you sure it was a chair? - I don't know what it was.
00:32:01: Someone hit me, I fell, and I wound up here.
00:32:03: - Where did they get a chair? There weren't any chairs.
00:32:04: - I don't know.
00:32:07: Earlier in the concert, Jeff Silverman is taking pictures in the front row.
00:32:12: He sees Jim look directly at a young girl and grab his crotch.
00:32:17: Her boyfriend picks up a chair.
00:32:19: According to Silverman, it was the first chair to be thrown.
00:32:23: - It's already coagulating. I think you're going to be OK.
00:32:30: I am The Lizard King! I can do anything!
00:32:42: Morrison's poem, The Celebration Of The Lizard,
00:32:45: was to take up one whole side of The Doors' next album,
00:32:49: but Paul Rothchild chooses not to include it.
00:32:54: Jim's behavior is becoming unpredictable,
00:32:57: and Rothchild is under pressure to get another record out
00:32:59: while the band is hot.
00:33:02: He fills out the side with unused songs from their first album.
00:33:08: Despite the raw intensity of new songs like Five To One and Unknown Soldier
00:33:14: critics dismiss the record.
00:33:18: But fans judge it differently.
00:33:20: Both the album and Morrison's Hello, I Love You hit number one.
00:33:40: - Something like that.
00:33:41: - Don't overblow, Jim. You got a long way to go.
00:33:45: - Why not?
00:33:49: In 1968, The Doors begin recording The Soft Parade.
00:33:56: Paul Rothchild produces, with Bruce Botnick as his engineer.
00:34:03: Jim has begun coming into the studio drunk or high.
00:34:09: Robby writes half the songs on Soft Parade,
00:34:12: and for the first time he and Jim separate their writing credits.
00:34:22: - Well, you know what Robby's trying to do, that sound.
00:34:24: - Yeah, I know that.
00:34:28: - Stupidest ending I've ever heard on any song.
00:34:30: - What's stupid, the ending?
00:34:31: - Yeah. Yeah, just...
00:34:36: - How's that again?
00:34:37: - Robby does two, John one, I do two, and then you come in.
00:34:46: - That sounds good, Robby. Here we go. One time, everybody, please.
00:35:08: Wild Child Full Of Grace,
00:35:13: Saver Of The Human Race
00:35:19: Your Cool Face...
00:35:35: Natural Child, Terrible Child
00:35:41: Not Your Mother's Or YourNFather's Child, You're
00:35:46: Our Child Screaming Wild...
00:36:29: Do you know the warm progress under the stars?
00:36:32: Do you know we exist?
00:36:34: Have you forgotten the keys to the kingdom?
00:36:37: Have you been born yet, and are you alive?
00:36:55: The youth movement keeps growing.
00:37:02: - So like I was telling you, honey,
00:37:03: before these cameramen came along,
00:37:06: death in our time...
00:37:11: - Yes, yes?
00:37:12: - Oh, man, I don't know.
00:37:16: And by 1968, the country was radically changed.
00:37:22: - And I pledge, if you give me your help,
00:37:24: if you give me your hand,
00:37:26: that I will work with you,
00:37:27: and we will have a new America!
00:37:29: Thank you very much!
00:37:35: Ray originally thought LSD was the key to enlightenment.
00:37:41: But a series of bad trips sends him in a different direction.
00:37:48: He turned to meditation, along with Robby and John,
00:37:52: attempting to find his bliss elsewhere.
00:37:57: Morrison keeps tripping for a while...
00:38:15: When The Music's Over.
00:38:22: When The Music's Over, Yeah-Yeah.
00:38:31: When The Music's Over,
00:38:34: Turn Out The Light,
00:38:38: Turn Out The Light...
00:38:44: Well, The Music Is Your Special Friend.
00:38:49: Dance On Fire As It Intends.
00:38:54: Music Is Your Only Friend
00:39:02: Until The End,
00:39:11: Until The... End!
00:40:03: Jim still has doubts about his voice.
00:40:06: He's had no musicial training and he can't read a note.
00:40:11: Sinatra has replaced Elvis as his favorite singer.
00:40:14: He describes his own voice as a scream or "a sick croon".
00:40:18: Cancel My Subscription To The Resurrection,
00:40:28: Send My Credentials To The House Of Detention.
00:40:36: I've Got Some Friends Inside...
00:40:38: Morrison takes a hard turn from psychedelics to booze.
00:40:44: Soft Parade takes 11 months to record.
00:40:49: This is partly due to Rothchild's insistence on perfection.
00:40:53: He makes the band do hundreds of takes.
00:41:03: But no one talks about the elephant in the room.
00:41:11: Densmore develops headaches and breaks out in rashes from the tension.
00:41:19: One day, John walks out of the studio, saying he can't take it anymore.
00:41:26: The next morning, he shows up,
00:41:28: and the band continues recording without a word.
00:41:32: Gonna Win, Yeah, We're Takin' Over. Come On!
00:41:39: Sometimes the drinking helps Morrison.
00:41:47: Sometimes it doesn't.
00:41:54: The band becomes adept at keeping him alive onstage.
00:42:16: His first onstage arrest had come early, in New Haven, Connecticut.
00:42:22: Before the concert, Jim is making out with a girl in a shower stall backstage.
00:42:27: A cop walks in on them.
00:42:29: Not recognizing Jim, he orders them out.
00:42:33: Jim tells him to go fuck himself.
00:42:35: The cop maces him.
00:42:39: Minutes before the show, Jim is in agony.
00:42:42: His eyes are still bloodshot and streaming with tears.
00:42:46: In the middle of the first song,
00:42:48: he stops and tells the audience what's just happened to him.
00:42:56: Jim keeps calling the cop
00:42:57: "A little blue man in a little blue suit with a little blue cap".
00:43:05: When the police move in,
00:43:06: Jim offers them a chance to "say their thing".
00:43:10: They choose not to.
00:43:14: Jim is arrested for breach of peace and immoral exhibition.
00:43:20: Two cops punch him in the face and kick him when he falls.
00:43:26: This starts the reputation of The Doors as a dirty and dangerous band.
00:43:37: It also marks a change between The Doors and their audience.
00:43:41: They're coming now to watch Morrison go crazy.
00:43:48: There is a growing sense
00:43:49: that the fans are not there to hear the music,
00:43:53: but to witness a spectacle.
00:44:00: It is becoming harder and harder
00:44:02: to distinguish between himself and the person who appears onstage.
00:44:10: But the train keeps picking up speed, and no one wants off.
00:44:19: In April 1968, The Village Voice chooses Morrison as vocalist of the year.
00:44:26: The Doors win best band,
00:44:28: and Ray Manzarek is best musician after Eric Clapton and Ravi Shankar.
00:44:33: The Soft Parade goes gold, making 4 gold albums in a row.
00:44:39: Touch Me, written by Krieger,
00:44:40: gives the band their third top-10 single.
00:44:44: Come On, Come On, Come On, Come On, Now,
00:44:46: Touch Me, Baby.
00:44:48: Can't You See That I Am Not Afraid?
00:44:54: What Was That Promise That You Made?
00:44:58: Why Won't You Tell Me What She Said?
00:45:02: What Was That Promise That You Made?
00:45:07: I'm Gonna Love You Till The Heaven Stop The Rain.
00:45:16: I'm Gonna Love You Till The Stars Fall From The Sky...
00:45:24: By late December 1968
00:45:26: The Doors are being hailed as America's Rolling Stones.
00:45:34: And just at that moment, Jim announces he's quitting.
00:45:42: The band is stunned.
00:45:45: Without Jim, there is no Doors.
00:45:50: - We need you to stay in the game.
00:45:53: - Well, the thing is, I don't think I like the game.
00:46:16: His girlfriend, Pam Courson,
00:46:18: encourages him to forget music and concentrate on his poetry.
00:46:23: Jim's already self-published two notebooks of his poems,
00:46:26: both dedicated to her.
00:46:29: His poetry is symbolic and pure.
00:46:34: It frees him from the requirements of rock stardom.
00:46:38: - Yeah, posing for a picture, can you imagine?
00:46:40: You know, and really looking in the camera and really posing?
00:46:45: It's insane! I must have been out of my mind!
00:46:49: But getting out is not as easy as it seems.
00:46:56: Ray convinces him to give it 6 more months.
00:47:02: But as his drinking increases,
00:47:04: Ray sees it give birth to Morrison's alter ego,
00:47:07: whom he names Jimbo.
00:47:10: Everyone dreads his appearance.
00:47:14: Out of concern for his health and the future of the band,
00:47:18: they finally confront him directly.
00:47:22: Jim listens politely.
00:47:26: He stays sober for about a week.
00:47:31: Then Jimbo returns.
00:48:06: The band hires a series of professional drinkers
00:48:09: to keep tabs on Morrison.
00:48:11: They can't keep up with him.
00:48:13: - You got any groovy possy in this joint?
00:48:16: Any LSD? Any LSD?
00:48:17: At a party in LA, he ends up with his face in Janis Joplin's lap.
00:48:22: She breaks down in tears, and then cracks a whiskey bottle over his head.
00:48:28: Pam gets tired of Jim's drunken infidelities.
00:48:33: She convinces him to see a psychiatrist.
00:48:36: Jim goes to one session.
00:48:40: He's moving further away from his family.
00:48:44: When his mother comes to watch The Doors in Washington, DC,
00:48:48: Jim does not see her.
00:48:51: He hasn't spoken to his father since 1966,
00:48:54: when he got a letter from him
00:48:56: with the advice "to give up any idea of singing
00:48:59: or any connection with a musical group
00:49:01: because of what I consider a complete lack of talent in this direction".
00:49:08: At the height of his son's fame,
00:49:10: Admiral Morrison is commanding
00:49:11: a division of aircraft carriers off the coast of Vietnam.
00:49:19: In his world, survival depends on obedience.
00:49:27: To Jim, obedience is suicide.
00:49:32: - Would anybody like to see my genitals?
00:49:37: I don't think there should be a president, man.
00:49:39: I think it should be a total democracy!
00:49:42: But I'll tell you this, man, I'll tell you this.
00:49:46: I don't know what's going to happen, man,
00:49:48: but I want to have my kicks before the whole shit house goes up in flames.
00:49:52: All Right? All Right!
00:49:57: In September 1968, The Doors tour Europe.
00:50:10: They're a big hit, even after Jim swallows a chunk of hash in Amsterdam
00:50:15: and collapses unconscious on stage.
00:50:19: The band plays the gig without him, with Ray doing all the singing.
00:50:27: Afterwards, Jim stays in London with Pam,
00:50:30: hanging out with poet Michael McClure.
00:50:34: The three of them go off on a drinking binge.
00:50:39: When Jim resurfaces,
00:50:41: he discovers The Doors have licensed Light My Fire
00:50:44: for use in a car commercial.
00:50:50: Robby, Ray and John explain they've tried to find him for days.
00:50:54: They thought the commercial was unique and felt Jim would agree.
00:50:59: But Jim does not agree.
00:51:00: The car commercial and $ 75,000 evaporate.
00:51:07: The alcohol takes a personal toll.
00:51:10: In the beginning, as Ray pulls the band together,
00:51:12: he and Jim are very close.
00:51:16: Jim had always welcomed Robby,
00:51:18: offering advice like giving each lyric a double meaning.
00:51:26: His drinking drives a wedge between them.
00:51:34: John and Jim used to drive around,
00:51:35: fantasizing about being in a famous rock and roll band.
00:51:40: The alcohol pushes them apart as well.
00:51:45: They all see Jim struggle, but have no idea how to help him.
00:51:53: And now, The Doors start playing larger arenas.
00:51:56: The first is The Hollywood Bowl in 1968.
00:52:01: Jim seems a little off.
00:52:05: John thinks he's dropped acid right before the show.
00:52:11: Robby feels Jim was distracted by Mick Jagger
00:52:14: sitting in the front row with Pam on his lap.
00:52:20: They sell out Madison Square Garden and The LA Forum,
00:52:24: and in early 1969, their manager, Bill Siddons,
00:52:27: books their first extensive US tour.
00:52:31: They'll hit 19 cities.
00:52:34: Their first gig is in Miami.
00:52:41: The band arrives early, minus Morrison.
00:52:45: He's had a fight with Pam and missed his plane.
00:52:49: He misses another flight hanging out in the airport bar
00:52:52: and shows up 20 minutes late.
00:52:54: - Ladies and gentlemen, The Doors!
00:52:57: The mood inside the converted airplane hangar is already tense.
00:53:01: The promoter has pulled out all the seats so he could sell another 2000 tickets.
00:53:08: As the band takes the stage, Jim seems preoccupied.
00:53:13: The week before, The Living Theatre had performed in Los Angeles.
00:53:17: Their manifesto is radically political -
00:53:20: change can only come from a rejection of all rules.
00:53:25: Jim goes to every performance.
00:53:28: He once called The Doors "erotic politicians",
00:53:32: but he confesses to the group's director
00:53:35: that though he has the ear of a generation,
00:53:38: he feels he's never had anything to say.
00:53:42: He chooses this moment to change that.
00:53:45: Yeah! Now listen here!
00:53:49: I ain't talking about no revolution!
00:53:55: And I'm not talking about no demonstration!
00:54:02: I'm talking about having a good time!
00:54:05: I'm talking about love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
00:54:14: Grab your fucking friend and love him. Come on!
00:54:21: Hey, listen, I'm lonely.
00:54:24: I need some love, you all. Come on!
00:54:30: I need some good-time loving, sweetheart.
00:54:35: Love me. Come on!
00:54:37: Someone throws a gallon of orange paint at the band.
00:54:40: You're All A Bunch Of Fucking Idiots!
00:54:47: You're All A Bunch Of Slaves,
00:54:50: Letting People Tell You What You're Gonna Do!
00:54:55: How Long Are You Gonna Let Them Push You Around?
00:54:59: Maybe You Love It!
00:55:00: Maybe You Love Getting Your Face Stuck In The Shit! Come On!
00:55:05: What Are You Gonna Do About It?
00:55:09: There's a rush at the stage.
00:55:14: Now, Listen,
00:55:15: Anybody That Wants To Come Up Here And Join Us
00:55:18: And Do Some Dancing, Have Some Fun, Just Get On Up Here. Come On!
00:55:20: A friend of Jim's walks out and hands him a lamb.
00:55:24: I'd Fuck Her, But She's Too Young.
00:55:28: A woman pours a bottle of champagne over Morrison.
00:55:32: He takes off his wet shirt, urging everyone to join him.
00:55:36: Shirts, pants, bras and underwear sail through the air.
00:55:41: But there's only one song they wanna hear.
00:55:44: - Light My Fire! Light My Fire!
00:55:49: Morrison gets angry.
00:55:50: "You Came To See Something Else, Didn't You?"
00:55:54: "All Right, Here's My Cock!".
00:55:57: Now, we're not going to leave until we all get our rocks off.
00:56:01: Ray yells out for someone to stop him.
00:56:03: - Go on, someone's going to get hurt.
00:56:06: The stage starts to collapse.
00:56:11: Robby and John jump off.
00:56:14: Manzarek keeps playing.
00:56:19: Jim is thrown into the audience by a security guard.
00:56:30: Less than an hour after it started, the concert is over.
00:56:35: The Doors play fragments of only 4 songs.
00:56:46: The next day, the entire band flies to Jamaica for a vacation.
00:56:51: Unknown to them, something strange is happening back in Miami.
00:56:58: - The Doors are out to make their own scene.
00:57:02: It was a bad scene, and...
00:57:04: Like I say, it was completely unwarranted,
00:57:06: uncalled for, on all parts.
00:57:08: It didn't seem like actual entertainment
00:57:10: that we've expected to see.
00:57:12: Seemed like very many people were under the influence of drugs.
00:57:16: We have to do something about this. This is real disgusting.
00:57:19: My children, when I grow up and I have children,
00:57:21: do I want them in an environment like this?
00:57:24: I mean, is this progress, or are we decaying in a way?
00:57:28: We have taken out two warrants for Jim Morrison.
00:57:32: One of them is for indecent exposure.
00:57:36: The other is for the use of obscene languages
00:57:39: during his performance at Dinner Key Saturday night.
00:57:43: We have been delayed on issuing these warrants
00:57:45: because we were waiting, hoping to get pictures
00:57:48: that were taken during the performance.
00:57:51: Jim's hit with one felony and three misdemeanors,
00:57:54: but it's the felony charge that is the most disturbing.
00:57:58: It claims that Jim did lewdly and lasciviously
00:58:00: "expose his penis, place his hands upon his penis and shake it,
00:58:05: and did simulate the acts of masturbation upon himself
00:58:08: and oral copulation upon another".
00:58:11: Although many pictures were taken during the concert,
00:58:13: none show Morrison exposing himself.
00:58:16: But for proof of oral copulation,
00:58:19: the prosecution offers this photo as evidence.
00:58:24: The charges take The Doors by surprise.
00:58:28: Over a hundred cops had been at the concert.
00:58:31: None had attempted to stop Morrison.
00:58:34: To John, the only thing they were guilty of was a lousy show.
00:58:38: - I especially thank my fellow citizens who join me...
00:58:43: But a wave of conservatism is sweeping the country.
00:58:45: - For over five months, our community has been subjected...
00:58:48: Decency rallies are held, specifically targeting The Doors.
00:58:52: - The people of Dade County have said "Enough, enough, enough!".
00:58:58: Even the rock and roll press turns against them.
00:59:00: ...to break its contract and cancel two concerts of The Doors.
00:59:05: Radio stations stop playing The Doors' music.
00:59:08: ...performances would be obnoxious.
00:59:10: And one by one, every remaining city
00:59:13: on The Doors' first major tour gets canceled.
00:59:19: Finally, on April 4 of 1969 Jim Morrison surrenders to the FBI.
00:59:28: The trial starts in August.
00:59:30: Ray, Robby and John testify in Jim's defense.
00:59:33: All of them deny seeing Jim expose himself.
00:59:37: - Jim, you're facing 3 1/2 years in state prison for the Miami incident.
00:59:41: The scope of this trial goes way beyond rock and roll.
00:59:44: It's really about the first amendment.
00:59:46: - What we're testing down there is the...
00:59:49: Issue of artistic freedom of expression.
00:59:53: But the prosecutor, Terrence McWilliams, seems preoccupied with sex.
00:59:58: He keeps returning to the oral copulation charge.
01:00:01: Jim explains he was down on his knees
01:00:03: simply to admire Robby's intricate finger work.
01:00:08: McWilliams scoffs, saying Jim must have seen Robby
01:00:11: perform this solo hundreds of times.
01:00:14: Jim replies, "Well, Robby gets better and better all the time".
01:00:19: Although a comedy of errors, trial is no joke.
01:00:24: On October 30 of 1969,
01:00:27: Morrison is found guilty of profanity and indecent exposure.
01:00:31: - Jim, you have anything to say?
01:00:42: Judge Murray Goodman sentences Jim
01:00:44: to four months of hard labor in the Dade county jail.
01:00:50: The Doors' attorney quickly files an appeal,
01:00:53: but the uncertainty of its outcome
01:00:55: throws The Doors into an uneasy state of limbo.
01:00:59: Morrison takes it the hardest.
01:01:05: It's more than just fear of spending time in a deep-southern jail.
01:01:09: It's as if he's suddenly realized he's not invincible.
01:02:05: Like Morrison, the country's innocence is being tested as well.
01:02:11: A spasm of violence ripples throughout the decade,
01:02:15: and it continues to be reflected in The Doors' music.
01:02:21: Morrison believes violence is an American tradition.
01:02:25: Its citizens are addicted to it and enchanted by it.
01:02:34: The Doors had passed on Woodstock,
01:02:36: so in 1970, while still waiting on their Miami appeal,
01:02:40: they fly to a small island off the coast of England.
01:02:44: The concert at The Isle of Wight
01:02:46: is intended to be a fusion of spirit
01:02:48: and the world's best rock musicians,
01:02:51: but fans feel the concert should be free.
01:02:55: Police and promoters disagree.
01:03:13: This Is The End, Beautiful Friend.
01:03:22: This Is The End, My Only Friend.
01:03:32: Of Our Elaborate Plans,
01:03:39: Of Everything That Stands.
01:03:53: I'll ever Look Into YourNEyes Again.
01:04:09: Can You Picture What We'll Be?
