The first time I saw her was at the
Naval Air Station in Alameda,

a morning in February 1945.

You'd have never known to look at her
that she was a battle -scarred veteran

had fought bravely in the Philippine Sea
and had practically been destroyed.

When I thought of what this carrier had
been through, how she'd fought for

flying colors, I was proud to be
assigned to her.

I'd heard a lot about her captain, too.

I was very anxious to meet him, maybe a
little nervous, even.

Because he was supposed to be as tough
as the ship.

He was reputed to be one of the toughest
men in the Navy to serve under.

Whether he was a fair man, too, or just
