This is Major...

...and he's an English bull terrier.

And we think he is about two and a half years old.

I'm volunteering for a rescue at the moment.

So I'm fostering him...

...and getting him trained up...

...and ready for rehoming.

He came over from Ireland a bit...

...bruised and beaten and...

...just not very well cared for.

He arrived and he was a bit stressed out.

He was underweight...

...had worms...

Had obviously been hit.

He was really, really hungry when he came to me.

We just let him be for a couple of weeks.

We just let him settle and he slept a lot...

...and ate a lot.

And then he started coming round and...

...he just turned into a lovely dog, actually!

I didn't think I was gonna get another dog.

I really didn't.

And then my daughter says:

"Oh there's this dog..."

"It's been looking for a home for ages."

"The farmer that had it cannot ..."

"It'll not work, it's a working dog and it won't work."

And I came down to meet this dog here, right?

And she was very timid.

And I knelt down...

...and she came straight up to me. And she...

...went straight up to my nose...

...and licked my nose.

And the people in the room were like:

"Whoa!"

"We've never seen that before."

"Never seen that!"

Y'know I think after day two...

...I'd made up my mind.

You know, I was kinda like:

"She's just so gorgeous!"

And everybody I met was looking at her saying:

"She is just gorgeous!"

"She's an absolutely gorgeous dog."

After a week of having her...

...it was just...

We're soulmates! We're just...

She won't leave my side.

Scots are well renowned for liking a dram, shall we say...

And I don't think that will ever change!

There are many old stories...

...from moms and dads from days before...

...where dads used to walk out the door and say:

"Now I'm just gonna see a man about a dog."

And that was code for: "I'm going for a pint!"

She's come right outta her shell.

When I first took her to the pub, for instance...

She'd just...

She'd just shake.

She'd just cower away from everybody.

She wouldn't let anybody touch her. She was never aggressive...

She was just scared. Very, very scared.

But now you take her in...

...and she's just great with everybody.

And lots of people say that, they say:

"Oh, look at the difference in that dog!"

The Scottish pub...

...has been a hub of the community...

...for a really long time.

And dogs have always been a part of that.

And of all the places that Kyra and I have lived...

Highland parts where you get snowed in, eight feet of snow...

Sometimes quite unusual, but it's always kinda exciting.

Because you knew that was a good reason...

...to go and kinda stack up in the pub.

People'd be throwing logs in the fire...

...and all the wet dogs'd be standing there, steam coming off of them.

It was a great, great atmosphere.

It still is, it still does happen.

I'm gonna feed him a lot of sirloin steak, and gravy...

...and we're gonna give him loads of cuddles on the couch...

...and a few good hikes...

...and get some nice pictures.

And try not to cry too much.

I'm actually gonna really miss him.

I'm gonna have to...

...take up my running again or...

...keep myself busy.

We've always had dogs...

...in and out of our lives constantly.

But I think he's gonna be the last one for a while.

I've discovered that they're just...

...so forgiving...

...and kind.

What amazes me is...

...when bad things have happened to them...

...or when somebody's done something terrible to them...

...they'll always trust again, which...

...amazes me. Totally amazes me.

A relationship with a dog is...

It's better than...

...any relationship you'll have with a human.

In my point of view.

Don't be getting me wrong, I love humans, but y'know...

Dogs are just...

They don't know the bad sides.

They just know the good side.

They just know their loyalty.
