And that's what kind of
makes it all worth it.

as you probably painfully know,

we've lost our head wrangler.
Now, I have a philosophy,

and I've been doing
this a really long time, right?

We don't hire head wranglers.

I've never -- Not one time have
I ever hired a head wrangler.

We make head wranglers.

-Head wrangler is somebody

who is in charge
of all the other wranglers

and the corral as a whole.

So they give structure
to the ranch in that department.

-Believe me,

they always emerge and
they show their stripes.

-One of my goals is
to ultimately own my own ranch.

And so starting from the bottom

at somebody else's
as a head wrangler

could really give me
the experience that I need

in order to do that.

-They're the ones
who start first, finish last,

and they help their
other wranglers,

and when they go to bed, they
know they finished the day well.

-Yes, sir.

-That's what a head wrangler
looks like.

-Russell not saying immediately,
like, "Vern's head wrangler,"

it's frustrating

because I've been out there
busting my butt until

after everyone's gone to bed
kind of thing,

because things still
need to get done.

-They don't have to be tall

I think it's a given
that I should be head wrangler.

I put my blood,
sweat, and tears in this ranch,

and I'm very confident
in my knowledge and my skills.

And I know that I am
qualified for this position.

she's very by the book.

She's like the A student,

but I'm the teacher's favorite.

-So your family, all your
family lives in Georgia?

-Yeah.
Half in Georgia, half in Miami.

That's where
the horses come from.

My mom's from Kentucky.
My dad's from Cuba.

I got a little bit
of a countryside,

and I got a little bit
of a Hispanic side.

So when they come together,
something magical happens.

And it's called the
crazy Cuban redneck.

-Close to your family?

Like, I'm super close with
my whole family pretty much.

My parents split
when I was a kid,

I was like 4 or 5,
and then my mom remarried.

-Dad's a pastor.

And I really appreciate that.

He's really great.

And it seems like
we have a lot in common.

And, you know,
I'm not oblivious to the fact

I was baptized in the river
that I guide on,

and every time
I take clients out there,

I just feel,
like, the presence of God.

As a wrangler,

one of the things
that really makes me smile

is seeing people on a horse
for the first time.

It's a scary thing.
It can be really intimidating.

And watching someone
overcome those fears

and halfway into the ride,
they can't stop smiling,

like, that truly makes
my heart happy.

It really does.

And it reminds me of why I love
being a wrangler

and doing this type of work.

I wasn't always a cowboy.

I joined the Navy when I was 17,

and I was in
for a little over four years,

and I got medically discharged.

I started riding horses
when I was seven.

A friend of mine
who cowboys in Texas was like,

"Hey, come work on our ranch."

And it was actually one
of the best decisions

I ever made in my life.

And so I finally got
him to stop.

And, like, we got off the horse
to switch horses.

I was going to ride him. And I
was just holding him by a rein,

and he justripped out and he
rips the rein out of my hand.
