Almost as soon as the motion picture was
invented, it was used to show a man and

a woman having sexual intercourse.

A Free Ride is probably the oldest blue
movie commercially available today.

It was made about 1915 and is one of the
oldest blue movies in the collection of

the Kinsey Institute for Sex Research at
Indiana University.

We have written descriptions of earlier
blue movies.

But the movies themselves no longer
exist.

Their film stock dried and crumbled into
dust years ago.

One of the problems of historical
research in this field is that

distributors often retitle a film or
change it in other ways.

The print of this film in the Kinsey
Collection is entitled A Grass Sandwich,

but the film itself is substantially the
same.

We don't know exactly when the first
blue movies were made, but we do know

they were being produced on a large
scale in Buenos Aires as early as 1904.

Films from Buenos Aires were sold to
customers in Europe as well as the

Hemisphere.

Most of the exported products went to
England and France.

By 1910, Europe had developed its own
blue movie industry.

At that time, all motion pictures used
35mm film.

The equipment was very expensive, and
the earliest stag movie customers were

mainly of two types, wealthy individual
and houses of prostitution.

Soon after the turn of the century, blue
movies became a standard item of

entertainment in the more expensive
brothels.

The early years of stag movies were
definitely not the age of the common

In France, the going price of admission
to a stag movie show was the equivalent

of 20 American dollars.

And that was before World War I, when a
dollar really was a dollar.

She's Flamin' Mamie, she's a power band,
the hottest baby in town.

She's a hard torture, she loves torture,
a gal that burns them down.

Of all those deaf returning mamas, not
one compares.

For she stands endurin', carries power
and assurance on everything she wears.

When it comes to lovin', she's a human
oven, but she's hard to understand.

May sound funny, but paper money burns
her down.

He works in a mine set jail box and
matches at the age of nine.

Flamin' Mamie, sure power man.

On the Beach is a genuinely funny film.

It includes nudity and sex, but its
appeal seems much like the appeal of a

joke. It offers a humorous approach to
sex rather than a clinical description

sexual activity.

In many early films, the joke was more
important than the graphic sex.

A film called The Pickup, made in the
early 20s, tells the story of a man who

drives a girl 10 miles out in the
country, parks the car, and gives her

classic choice between having sex with
him and walking home.

The girl walks home.

On their next date, the man drives 20
miles out in the country before he

propositions the girl.

Again, she walks home.

On the third date, he drives her 50
miles out in the country, and this time

gives in.

After they have sexual intercourse, the
man asks why she didn't give in on the

first date and save a lot of time and
trouble.

The girl says,

I'll walk 10 miles or 20 miles, but
damned if I'll walk 50 miles to save a

from a dose of clap.

Oh,

Now I'm in clover.

I'm glad all over. I want to shout

And then, of course, you happened along.

The earliest blue movies were made by
professionals.

There were very few amateur
cinematographers in those days.

Photography and film processing were far
more complicated and expensive than

they are today.

A free ride and on the beach are simple
movies.

But in photographic technique, they are
not far away from the two real comedies

that were shown in theaters 50 years
ago.

The early films were well edited and
titled and usually had a storyline.

They had special effects, such as the
dissolves in On the Beach that required

degree of skill and willingness to work
that have largely disappeared from the

stag movie industry.

In

the

20s and 30s, the largest single market
for blue movies was the men -only

organization that wanted to have a stag
party.

Veterans groups, lodges, civic
organizations, and college fraternities

evening's entertainment for $50 or $100.

Because equipment was expensive and not
widely available, the show was rented as

a package deal and included a projector
and a screen as well as two or three

hours of stag films.

Until fairly recently, blue movies were
seen almost exclusively by men.

They probably reflected some of the
sexual attitudes of the middle -class

American male.

Film critics Arthur Knight and Hollis
Alpert did a study of 1 ,000 stag films

made from 1920 to 1967 and reported the
results in Playboy magazine.

Oral stimulation of the genital organs
is quite common in today's stag movies.

It was much less common in the older
stags.

Fallatio, the woman taking the man's
penis in her mouth, took place in 37 %

the films made in the 20s.

while cunnilingus, the man stimulating
the woman's vulva with his tongue, took

place in only 11%. Even today, fellatio
is shown more often than cunnilingus.

The traditional male attitude seems to
have been that it's nice if a woman does

that to a man, but a real man wouldn't
soil himself by doing the same thing to

woman.

Especially in the past, many American
men grew up in believing that to kiss

someone on the genital organs is to
degrade oneself.

For a man who holds that belief and also
wants to think men are superior to

women, it is more acceptable to watch a
woman degrade herself by kissing a man's

penis than to watch a man degrade
himself by kissing a woman's vulva.

These early blue movies are still on the
market, but they should be thought of

as humorous mementos of the past.

America has changed in many ways.

not least in its attitudes towards sex.
And so has the blue movie.

has a special place in the history of
the Blue movie.

It's an animated cartoon made in the
late 20s or early 30s, and rumor has it

that it was done by some of the same
cartoonists that did Crazy Cat.

The complete film, this is only an
excerpt, required more than 10 ,000

line drawings.

Today, genuine full animation is too
expensive a process even for the

cartoons made to be shown on television.

There isn't time or money or patience.

or really painstaking animation.

Just the one, one man in the world for
me.

He's just my bill, an ordinary man.

Buried Treasure was obviously made for
pleasure more than profit.

Since money can't pay for that kind of
craftsmanship today, it's likely to

remain a truly unique film.

who couldn't arrange to see blue movie
there was always the penny arcade

during

World War two the penny arcades on
Market Street grew from almost nothing

accommodate thousands of servicemen who
didn't know of any other opportunity to

see a girl in a brassiere and panties.

In the 25 years since D .J. Day, Market
Street has always had a steady stream of

men eager to drop a coin into the
machine to see pinup girls that move.

Some of these films were bathing suit
poses by long -forgotten models.

Others were striptease films by some of
the most famous names in burlesque.

From the Penny Arcade movie, it was only
a short step to the striptease movie

made especially for showing in theaters.

In the prosperous days of burlesque,
there had been striptease movies with

on film that were made during
performances in theaters before live

The settings and costumes may have been
the tinsel of a burlesque house, but it

was expensive tinsel.

The girls were often headliners, and the
films had a soundtrack on which you

could hear the band playing and the
audience applauding.

As burlesque houses died out, movie
theaters specializing in sex began to

multiply.

The supply of live striptease movies
wasn't nearly enough to meet the demand.

The first innovation was to make silent
striptease movies in a studio decorated

to look like a theater stage.

These were shown with recorded music and
looked much like the striptease movies

made for Penny Arcade.

The next step was a psychological
refinement.

Instead of giving an imitation of a
stage performance by a girl in a gaudy

costume, the newer striptease movies
pretended to show the audience an

girl in ordinary clothes getting
undressed in her bedroom at home.

Of course, the girl didn't look exactly
like the girl next door, but at least

she looked like one of the prostitutes
next door.

And after she got down to brassiere and
panties, she could do a lot of bumps and

grinds on the bed.

Some of the girls took off all their
clothes and rolled around in a discreet

manner, being careful not to show either
nipples or pubic hair.

When the girl's nipples were uncovered,
she was standing with her back to the

camera. And when her legs were apart,
Her crotch was either covered by a

or outside the camera's field of vision.

A whole generation of American men lived
in constant frustration and constant

hope. Just a flash of nipple, or please
God, just a flash of pubic hair, and

we'd all go home happy.

Once in a while, there seemed to be a
flash of something, just enough to hope

that the model or the photographer would
make a terrible mistake and show

everything. But they never did.

and in our hearts we knew they never
would.

While the sex movie theaters were
offering their patrons a steady diet of

frustration, the stag movie of the 50s
was offering more and more sex and less

and less of anything else.

The storyline was the shortest distance
from outside the bedroom to inside the

bedroom.

One of the most persistent ideas about
the blue movie industry is that one

famous actress or another made a blue
movie when she was young and needed the

money.

Now, whether or not those stories are
true, there is no such film on the

If blue movies starring famous actresses
really do exist, they are in strictly

private collections and have never been
commercially available.

is the only blue movie on the market
that is known to star a top -name

performer. The female star is the famous
stripper Candy Bar, who made the film

at a motel in Texas during the late 40s
or early 50s.

In Roman Catholic countries, blue movies
are often anti -clerical.

In many films, the characters are
priests, monks, and nuns. And the object

not merely to depict sexual activity,
but also to show that the clergy are no

better than the rest of us.

Lecherous monks and nuns appear fairly
often in French, Cuban, and Mexican blue

movies, but are almost unknown in the
American product.

One of the few exceptions is a well
-known film, The Nun Story, produced in

Southern California around 1954.

At the beginning and end of the film,
the female star is seen wearing a nun's

habit. Apparently, this so upset the
prospective customers that the film

hard to sell in its original form.

The distributors solved their problem by
cutting out the sequences showing the

woman in her nun's habit and retitling
the film College Co -Ed.

The nun story illustrates several trends
in the history of the blue movie.

Unlike the oldest stag film, the nun
story has no titles, and there is no

attempt to tell a story.

The sexual action starts almost
immediately.

Instead of lighthearted fun, one might
almost say good, clean fun, there is

really strong sexual passion.

The photography shows much less
production effort than a free ride or on

beach.

Often the cameraman has absentmindedly
shot a spotlight or a passing shadow or

even someone's elbow.

All these distractions should never
appear in the film, but there has been

little attempt to keep them out and no
attempt to edit them out once the

was made.

The main reasons for these changes have
been increasing availability of motion

picture equipment and increasing
openness about sex as an acceptable

The earliest stags were made by
professionals because nobody else had

equipment or the skills.

Today, there's a huge army of amateurs
who own movie cameras and projectors.

Both photography and processing have
been simplified, and just about anyone

press the button and put some kind of
picture on the screen.

There are still competent professionals
who make an occasional blue movie for

the hell of it, but their efforts are
lost in the overwhelming tide of garbage

made by amateurs.

Although stag movies have declined in
technical quality, there are some

trends. There is less storyline than
there used to be, but there is often

more genuine sexual feeling.

Many women who appear in stag films are
prostitutes.

But many are amateurs who get
psychological satisfactions from having

intercourse on camera.

The star of the nun story is obviously a
passionate woman who is having a hot

time up there on the screen.

And for both the actress and the
audience, that's an improvement over the

old days of giggles and winks.

During the 20s and 30s, the market for
blue movies was a rental market.

The films were expensive and the
customers were organizations.

Those were the good old days of the stag
party and the smoker.

But post -war America was prosperous as
never before.

In the 40s, 16 -millimeter equipment
came on the market at prices a lot of

Americans could afford, and the home
movie era began.

By the mid -50s, rentals to men -only
groups were no longer the main source of

revenue. Private individuals were the
largest market, and the usual deal was

outright sale or rental for showing in
private homes.

At first, the sellers were the same
traveling fast buck operators who had

films for smokers.

As the market broadened, it became
possible to buy stag films under the

at respectable camera stores.

A 400 -foot reel of 16 -millimeter film
could be rented for $5 or $10, or bought

outright for $25 or more, whatever the
traffic would bear.

By the end of the 1950s, the home movie
market had changed from 16 to 8

millimeter equipment.

The film cost less, and so did the
equipment.

Blue movies also shifted to an 8
millimeter market.

Most films were sold to individuals who
owned home movie projectors and used the

films to entertain themselves and their
friends.

Although the smoker still exists, it
accounts for only a small part of

blue movie market.

The standard unit is the 200 -foot reel
of 8 -millimeter black and white film,

which runs for 10 minutes and sells for
$30 to $40 in San Francisco.

200 feet of color film would sell for
$50 or more, depending on the quality.

Technical improvements have made 8
-millimeter equipment completely

for home movie projection.

There is no longer any sizable demand
for 16 -millimeter stag films.

Fortunately, old films can be
photographically reduced from 35 to 16

so that the rich heritage of the past
need never be lost.

The change in the stag market from
smokers to home entertainment has been

accompanied by another change.

Blue movies are no longer for men only.

The word smoker dates back to the good
old days.

Once upon a time, nice women didn't
smoke.

And they certainly didn't watch sex
movies, or vote, or work at men's jobs.

Times have changed.

Once upon a time, it was possible to
believe that women aren't aroused by sex

movies.

Now that stags are shown in private
homes and seen by couples, men know

perfectly well that a large proportion
of women are aroused by sex movies.

In the 1920s, it was still possible for
a middle -class American man to believe

that men are hot for sex.

and their wives are really interested in
cooking and cleaning.

If an interest in sex is dirty
-mindedness, then today's swinging

knows that women can be just as dirty
-minded as men.

For many couples, viewing stag movies
together is part of the sexual

of our times.

By the early 1960s, burlesque was dead,
the penny arcade was dying, and sex

movie theaters looked like the wave of
the future.

At first, they weren't really competing
with stag movies.

They were showing the same old
striptease movies, and the audience was

the same old frustration.

But then, sometime in the mid -60s, the
barriers began to come down.

First, there were just a few glimpses of
pubic hair.

Gradually, the films went further and
further.

After the Supreme Court decided that
nudity in itself is not obscene, the

natural development was to put two
people in the bedroom instead of one.

There was no sexual contact, really,
just nudity.

And the court had ruled that nudity
isn't obscene.

Some filmmakers began to use
synchronized sound, and the boy and girl

Blue movies also shifted to an 8
millimeter market.

Most films were sold to individuals who
owned home movie projectors and used the

Although the smoker still exists, it

The standard unit is the 200 -foot reel
of 8 -millimeter black and white film,

Technical improvements have made 8

There is no longer any sizable demand
