Feels like I'm coming home.

In 2010, a group of down-on-their-luck men

from Sandy, Oregon, arrived in Alaska.

A valve on each of those, and then you can adjust

[Jack] I think this whole pipe is just plugged up with gold.

Dakota Fred gets to the bottom of the Glory Hole.

I'd be highly embarrassed, highly embarrassed that I don't

wind up with at least 100 ounces of gold

out of this place.

The Dakota Boys believe there's a massive fortune in gold

at the bottom of an ancient waterfall's plunge pool.

To pull it out, they need to dig a 100-foot deep hole

to bedrock, nicknamed the "Glory Hole"

[Fred] Scary, huh?

Because any rock could come off of there at any time.

It's dangerous as hell down here.

We can't go any deeper, more than about 20 feet.

The bottom nowhere in sight, they hire a drill to find out

if Glory Hole gold is within reach.

if we're going to make this work.

With his crew gone home for the winter,

crazy enough to still be in the Yukon.

the people to keep doing it.

But after the loss of his mother...

I didn't really take any time to think about

her actually being gone.

Rick went into a tailspin that caused him to step away

from mining in 2022.

Why aren't you mining?

I've wondered that myself, a lot, too, I...

I don't know, man. I just haven't been...

I haven't been up for it.

But that wasn't the end of Rick Ness.

Rick Ness rises from the ashes.

After taking a season off to regroup, Rick starts

his comeback with buddy Zee

in the spring of 2023.

[Rick] Being totally open and honest, you know, I just didn't have

the energy to do anything. And, you know...

I was doing a little [bleep], you know, cocaine to try

and get [bleep] going. -Yeah.

And for a while, it seemed like an answer.

It made me feel good for a bit. You know what I mean?

That's all the hell I was looking for.

Um...

But surprise, surprise, that didn't work.

I lost money, you know, so I hit rock bottom and

I just went, "What the [bleep] are you doing, man?"

Like, how the [bleep] did you end up here?

Yeah.

"This ain't the answer,

so find out what the [bleep] answer is."

The thing I was always worried about is just, you know,

like the depression, because I --

And that's what it was.

You know, I lost my mom,

and everything went to [bleep] after that.

I mean, I held her as she died in the house, and we brought

her out of the house, and I locked the door.

I didn't go up there for years. I ignored it.

You know, I ignored it. I pushed it out.

I don't want to go up there.

So...

So, um...

Yeah, just give me a second.

But, you know, I was pretty solid going in to deal with it,

and I did.

I went up there and got all the pictures.

[Rick clears throat]

Well, I got everything I need, you know, to remind me

of her, and, uh... And I sold her house.

You know what I mean? It's just a house.

-It's not her -- yeah. -[Rick] You know what I mean?

It felt really good to do that.

You know what I mean? So, it did.

I mean, that was the turning point.

You know, it was like my mom was helping me out again.

You know, I sold her house.

And that was the money I needed to get back up here

and keep going again, so.

The culmination of a lifetime of mentorship

between a grandfather and grandson.

Number one, Grandpa John shares Parker's success.

[Grandpa John] Hello!

I've been doing it for 25 years, and it's been very

difficult for most people to stay with it and be successful

and make money.

And only maybe 5% of the people that attempt it

are successful.

Parker grew up on his family's Big Nugget Mine...

We go up there and there's nobody there but us.

And so we just have a good time.

...finding his first gold at just age six.

[Parker] Big Nugget, it was the place to be.

[laughing]

Gotcha!

By 16, he was in charge of the operation.

I've had 25 very good, productive years at the mine.

I have faith in your management that it will be successful.

Eventually, the time came

for Parker to strike out on his own.

[Parker] If I want to be serious about gold mining,

you know, the Yukon is the place to be.

You've got to go where the gold is.

Honestly, I'm pretty scared.

The toughest thing I've ever done is going to be

leaving here.

[Grandpa John] I look upon you like the eagle.

When it flops its wings and flies out of the nest,

he never comes back.

During Parker's first two seasons in the Yukon...

-How you doing, grandpa? -Oh, it's good to be up here.

It's nice to have you.

[Grandpa John] I'm amazed.

How many yards a day are you running?

-[Parker] Just over 1,000. -I'm really impressed.

But in 2015...

grandpa's health takes a turn for the worse.

[Parker] You know,

my grandpa's probably...

the most important person in my life.

And...for something to happen to him just all of a sudden

is pretty tough to, um...

I don't know what I'll do without him.

[Grandpa John] The doctors are sending me up all the medicines

to go under chemotherapy, and chemotherapy to me is...

suicide.

The truth is that

I won't survive it.

In 2016, 96-year-old grandpa

makes it to the Yukon one last time

for Parker's final gold weigh of the season.

Grandpa rides in style now.

[Grandpa John] Oh, my. Look at the beauty.

Ooh, boy, that's heavy.

That sounds real heavy.

[Parker] It's been a long one,

and you guys have all stuck it out,

and I appreciate that.

In his third season away from Big Nugget,

21-year-old Parker Schnabel and his team mined

over $3.7 million worth of gold.

Parker, you don't know how pleased and proud I am of you.

Just four years ago, you started to mine and you got

a hundred and some ounces, and you were quite pleased.

But you wanted to do better.

And with the help of a wonderful crew who worked

so hard for you, you now look at 3,000 ounces.

and you stayed with it until you won.
