one of the dullest towns in America is

the dreary community of Hotchkiss Falls

in the mid Hudson Valley the odds

probably are a thousand won against our

fighting anyone there with an

interesting story however that's where

we are so let's take a look around

so I told them Joe I says life's a

matter of give and take

you gotta learn to share 5050 not 80 40

he had heard and I was talking sense

[Music]

wait a minute I'd rather fini

let me pick another late now anyhow to

bring good luck to the guy that finds it

[Music]

we are all of us lucky indeed to be

employed by such a beneficent firm as

the coast-to-coast small-change mod and

this morning there is one among us who

is going to realize her luck even more

than the rest of us it gives me great

pleasure to present merit award number

four to that lucky girl

miss Peggy Ellen he slept well as Miss

employee in the entire chain to arrive

at your work 1,000 consecutive morning's

the time

that's the way it is when you meet up

with Johnny well I don't know any Johnny

but I'm not likely to meet one around

here unless it's that trip whoo whistles

have me in front of Cutler's drugstore

oh so that's what's got your tip no it's

it's just that I'm so fed up they played

a dirty trick on me be yourself really

nobody played a neat trick Sonia oh yes

they did when they were sitting around

deciding who was going to be who when

they came to me they said now let's make

this one nobody let's not give any

family and a home anything let's just

give her one thing a job the dullest

little job we can find or take it easy

change your name don't get married I

won't ever get married why of course you

out there well I guess we're in Fort Mac

take her into my office okay boss

molar and call her doctor quick push it

up

Oh she'll be all right does soon as she

recovers from the shock will you be able

to testify that she's not seriously

injured in any way

I think so pal that order keep down the

damages and me folks doc

try and relax you that's it now then

what's your name no my name's Deon I

mean it so it it's a no no that's not

this is much more serious than I thought

she's suffering from a temporary loss of

memory why does everything have to

happen to me yet

telephone the police no you imbecile you

see I want every other Pittman down

Billy upper case and spreading the story

that I'm an assassin don't why I mean

don't cry my dear we'll take care of

everything to notify the Bureau of

missing persons all about missing ten

minutes

ballin looking at her purse I did

there's nothing in it no identification

not a shred whatever you name it and how

you stop worrying you are you put your

picture in the papers where you belong

to come and claim you be nice Oh

nonsense a fine-looking girl like you

just wait'll you see the great big

beautiful picture we're gonna take

yes they will will take care of you

until they do of course we will we'll

ask you to remember how nice we were I

believe in yes barbala that machine we

take around get us booster for the beach

appear however he's my private expense

here you know you might have to take

care of me for a long time oh that would

be a great pleasure but I'm afraid that

you'll be off our hands just as soon as

your picture appears in the paper I did

not

Oh take that body away

hello hello nobody cares blindfold Jesus

notify the district manager immediately

I've already called him just a minute

they started putting on those blindfolds

I thought there might be trouble

nice work will you'll probably get my

job for that we mustn't count our

chickens before they're hatched must be

here's mr. snug dance now this may look

like I haven't made a very good start 48

hours you've driven one of our girls to

suicide

you must added a new kind of strike

you've let the place be looted you black

in the stores good name you you have I

overlooked anything mr. Quayle I can't

think of anything else at the moment is

enough tight enough you think the

removal of mr. Stuart will settle the

strike oh yes indeed sir once and for

all how soon can make contact the

employees bargaining come anytime

anytime we indicated willingness to meet

with their demands hey this looks like

her like who Peggy Evans look

[Music]

nonsense I feel we're indulging in some

wishful thinking stored in the interests

of efficiency out of consideration for

our customers and to save our business

I'll have to ask you to resign quill I'm

going to put you in Stuart's place

temporarily I so try to make it

permanent sir I don't care what you say

I'll never forget her face I tell you

this is her oh don't be a rational

Stuart how could it be this is how it

explains it here she's got amnesia and I

fail to see the connection well suppose

she did jump on the river then suppose

the shock made her lose her memory

dear dear we are grasping at straws

suppose she forgot she was going to

commit suicide suppose she swam ashore

and then forgot who she was and suppose

she just wandered out of New York

suppose you collect your things and get

out of this office but she isn't dead I

know she isn't I'm gonna find it and

bring her back here and prove to all of

you that I didn't drive her to suicide

do you think I want to spend the rest of

my life with that on my conscience

what's more I'm gonna make her tell the

truth to get me back my job if you can

bring back the dead Stuart you can

certainly get back your job I'll hold

you to that mr. Snodgrass

good morning hello I guess thought I'd

drop by on my way to the office and see

how your memory was getting along oh

it's fine thanks I remember perfectly

what are these make you they go roses oh

they might remind you of someone well

from now on every mine needs you you

know the incredible thing about your

case is this you aren't carrying a

single bit of identification the only

clue we have is the label of your

clothes

did that help any not a bit nobody at

your vets had ever seen you before you

paid cash and to top everything they

followed your instructions and throw

away your old clothes nah that's too bad

I've been thinking there may be a lot

more to this and we imagined maybe you

didn't get amnesia yesterday why do you

say that what maybe you had it for a

long time maybe since you were a little

child you know in a way I almost envy

you envy me for whatever for well just

make these setting possibilities ahead

of you you might be almost anyone in the

world a whole new life waiting for you

ready-made family friends husband maybe

maybe even children oh I doubt that why

you might even be a missing heiress and

[Music]

yes why not there's quite a few errors

of among the missing cases in the last

20 years and you might be any one of

them I think I'll write a feature about

that well I must be going

yes you're to be at the paper it need

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

let me see here I can you see like us

she is not I used to know her in

Milwaukee she ran away to the tree

search

they're keeping me from my daughter

[Music]

right at home home first wipeout night

where you have a member all right over

there I don't know it's fine right in

here mr. dorsen before I see anybody

I've got to tell you something all right

let's get started what was that

I remembered something you have what is

it

ba ba ba ba ba

what's the matter did you forget it

again no that's it

ba ba what in blazes of the sense and

remember ba ba ba

doesn't mean a thing but it must mean

something I have a feeling it's terribly

important how could it be

ba ba that doesn't make sense baa baa

black sheep have you any wool

shut up you'll see you're trying to

sneak in here i've been waiting for

hours back out there before I framed I

got to see this girl I know her oh yeah

I suppose she's your long-lost mother oh

I suddenly remembered something else

beside ba ba

well I see a circus holy all right hold

on a minute boss

hey Hiller what have you got in your

files on ba ba ba ba that's right ba ba

call me right back

Andy get me the files on ba ba ba ba and

make it snappy I got a feeling this may

lead to something circus ba ba don't you

start doing that circus ba ba ba ba

circus ba ba oh yeah I've got three bar

bars there's a Turkish mind reader who

cut up his assistant with an axe that's

no good

and there's Bob Parr the gorilla that

was brought over from Africa for the

Bronx Zoo what's the third as a nice

call Baba who was in the Braden case

that's it I thought I remembered it the

burden case yeah the nurse took the

burden kid to the circus and lost her

they never use that file well my dear

was an lucky thing you remembered Baba

he's an important important

tell him to hold up some dates for a

replate oh we got a real story

what Donna Burton secretary say be here

Thank You general and as excited as a

little boys reunited after 17 long years

the rich but lonely old man and the

wandering wait for the golden pearl I

have a little nervous wonder what'd he

say why he won't say a word

you look at her and hold out his arms

and his voice will break and the tears

streamed down his weather-beaten old

cheek why the baby

why not sending him Raja that camera

gentlemen this is a great moment a

sacred moment now which one of you

making buzzards is just he is oh you're

just in that well destined I broke

Bunnell of amalgamated copper I turned

barn of the SL envy and it was shaking

old man and by everything that's holy

I'll break you like a dry twig you won't

be needing me anymore will you boss

oh no no get out of here Thurston put

you in jail oh come now mr. brown don't

try appealing to my mercy I've got none

at all mr. Burton I don't think you

understand I understand you've been

fined of a criminal conspiracy to

defraud father mr. Burton all I've done

to try to help you recover your daughter

all you've done mr. derson is to print a

story without verification without

substantiating evidence and without

consulting my client papa

what kind of proof do you call that

there must be 40 thousand nurses in this

country named Papa but she remembers the

circus do circus what do you think of

that well you get me there I forgot that

my child is the only one in the world

who had ever seen a circus you big

barrel if you would have the decency to

consult mr. Burton if told you he has a

method if identifying his daughter it

has yeah certainly my child's nurse Baba

still lives with me

she's interviewed hundreds of these

phony girls in the last 15 years and

exposed every one of them

and

he'll expose this one too and when she

does I promise you I'll prosecute you to

the full extent of the law then I'll

find out who this girl really is and

I'll put her in the penitentiary too

under a real name well let's get started

wait he's not my father

heaven sake miss Burton and don't call

me miss burden but you don't remember

anything

remember that's right then what makes

you say that he's not your father well

his face what about my face if I'd ever

seen a face like that before I know I'd

remembered it's most kind face you

couldn't forget especially if you've

been exposed to it as a child oh you

don't want to go home with mr. burden do

you I don't want to and I'm not going to

well young lady in my opinion that

constitutes an admission of guilt if you

wish to prefer charges of conspiracy

cleanness I think they'll hold shall I

have fallen the District Attorney by all

means

look you can't do this to me

unless you cooperate mr. burden will

however right to think it's you're

concealing something some puny plan in

which you share I do not

don't you understand you've got to go

with him

district attorney's office hold on

please well

alright I'll go but if I turn out to be

your daughter I'm going to run away from

home

and I'll help you good luck my dear so

you need more than luck and so are you

do you see that she doesn't try to get

away who are you he's my bodyguard but

I'm lending him to you for the time

being

thank you baby we may need baby way I

mean maybe a trip I'm Amy Shirley

[Applause]

Jimmy take this lady to my study and see

that she stays there

[Music]

[Applause]

I'll take your things

[Music]

[Music]

hey Baba I brought it with me well let's

get it over with

cuz no need to be in such a tizzy yeah

turn round Oh

keep still master called heaven's sakes

this is no time for guessing I am NOT

you are I shall have to add some more

stitches alright you can do that anytime

you need a sweater it always catching

cold will you please forget about me and

concentrate on her no need for shouting

master Cornelius I'm not deaf yet well

what's this happenes your victim like

she's prettier than the others but cuz

she's more of a problem faster al I also

show hat up come on

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

come here well this is Baba how do you

do remember this room I don't remember

anything

Shh Cala Burton had a toy in this room

which he loved more than any other

always carried it around with her all

day long even slept with it at night

which one was it

I don't know didn't they tell you I I

have amnesia amnesia and no amnesia if

you don't get the right toy I'm gonna

hammer away at you until I find out who

you really are

but that's unreasonable you better dish

toldja tank master Cornelius look around

you

take your time well this is the end or I

am which hands if I gotta picking out

the right toy while the odds are about a

hundred to one or I guess I might as

well confess and get it over with

wait a minute if I confess her go to

jail

oh but I wish I were back in Hotchkiss

Falls think I think whatever that toy is

bird must have just taken it out of that

little safe behind the picture that

means that it couldn't be any one of the

big ones well at something

oh but gosh at least half of them are

small enough to fit me safe oh I wish I

were back in Hotchkiss Falls

say all the toys in the window

The Fader from standing in the Sun well

that means it couldn't be there it

wouldn't get faded line and safe Oh

the odds are going down they're going

down but I still wish I were better can

hatch his fault

[Music]

I said hot hot that means a toys must be

hot too unless unless one of them was

just put there and hasn't had time to

warm up dude

[Music]

hot hot hot hot hot hot hot

golly they're a lot the right ones not

here to be too big too big too big

[Music]

anyway the odds are lower there's only

this bunch of the darn things left it

was a bother said she even slept with

that tight night if she slept with it

then it couldn't be that car whether the

tin soldiers was that merry-go-round

they were better take those to bed with

her she'd scratch yourself and it

couldn't be that vital in what he's

doing hope that Dallas house they'd be

all broken we're young lady it seems to

me you had more than enough time just

one minute more please

I seem to remember something

[Music]

[Applause]

purely to let these two little dogs or I

can't choose it's gotta be one of them

quit

[Music]

well I protect it a 50/50 chance as good

as any gambler could ask me and I've got

to gamble

make up your mind

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

how can you ever forgive me what is it

daddy

[Music]

[Applause]

it's just it it's so frightening

celebified a you don't even know

[Music]

I've always been afraid that if I ever

did find your wife you'd be such a

stranger that you wouldn't want me Annie

me but now that you don't remember

anything that's happened to your bike

you're like a little child and you do

need a girl that used to be my cooks I

really found my kid again

oh just like that huh well it's the

burden residence isn't it yeah and this

iron contraption here is a gate look

I've got important business with some of

them here only I know I know but they

don't want anything I tell you only take

me a minute all appointments are made by

letter no appointment no dice now go on

and don't have a heart well a star was

right after all what a ha they know she

was ready

Carol burden identified our weather toy

wish I could've got a picture of it on

the toilet for 17 years it's quite a

memory yeah I guess so allowing me

general hey I thought I told you to get

that thing out of here look at that

[Music]

[Applause]

let me and I've been mad to seek care of

Burton immediate no just a minute Oh

[Music]

nothing I think somebody's trying to get

here oh it's probably some crazy

reporter Jim you take care

[Music]

[Music]

come on dear nobody should come back now

don't worry he bored you mustn't be

frightened it's all over

[Music]

I'm so excited and happy

Amelia the first time in 17 years I

think I know what you really mean you're

an angel

[Music]

if Mitzi could only see me now wanted me

to stay in hodgekiss for the rest of my

life to wait for a guy called Johnny

could make me laugh at nothing well I

got better things to me that nothing

[Music]

I wish mr. Burdon head and turn out to

piece of knives that's what makes me

feel so bad I've gotta stop there

behind the luckiest so dejected ever me

[Music]

[Applause]

boy best from

[Music]

wonderful

Oh

Oh

he's gonna fall

No

I think the guy

there's a bar in the lobby what does it

feel like hanging from that gallery

hurry up with that other double scotch

does that answer your question

say if you'd have fallen off that thing

I'll bet you're gonna crust a couple of

people in the orchestra yeah I've been

in the mood I bigger pot what I'm sorry

I didn't mean to startle you

bartender another double Scotch for the

gentleman Thanks not at all I merely

wanted to ask you did you really hang

from the gallery and if so why I got

Restless quite pity I missed it been

going to concerts for years and never

found anyone to resent them properly in

the next act I hang by my teeth I wish

you would hate music like acrobats haha

there she is

oh yes that's the burden girl charming

Ethel thing they say she has a spot of

amnesia

they can't be Carol burry

yet now that I look at her oh gosh shut

up old boy it it is cattle but no no I

can't go through that again not sleeping

not eating my dear fellow it is cattle

but don't say that how would you feel if

you suddenly discovered the girl you

thought you hadn't drowned turned out to

be drowned after all awkward I should

imagine they don't believe this don't

believe it she can't fool me with her

blonde hair and everything and I'll

prove it isn't this is what I say come

back right away

Peggy I didn't kill her I didn't kill

her

but it seems to me that he was upon the

hit show while of course you should know

where he hit you're too close to me she

lied she knows me I can tell the way she

reacted well don't brood about it old

boy there are lots more fish in the sea

she isn't drowned she never was why I I

didn't mean it like that she's a phony

that's what she is

Carol burden me I she hasn't any more

been given a party before I mean I don't

think I have Stefan not since I called

it giving other dance keeping it up long

after a bit time well she isn't a child

any longer Babar and after all it's high

time she met the young men in her own

set we can't be selfish about it we'll

try to keep her all to ourselves

you spent 17 years looking for her now

you want to get rid of her

that's a foul law don't you swear at me

master Cornelius or you will spend the

evening in your room

oh now stop it you two nobody's going to

get rid of me I'm going to stay right

here

though young men get a look at you oh

I'll have something to say about that

what of course you will dance with all

of them what the mall oh don't go

putting ideas into our head don't worry

about that I promise you faithfully I

won't get married until I find someone

that's nice as father thank you honey

what if you do I hope you find someone

with more sense

Thanks

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

don't shoot watch out for you're going

come on come on get busy me yes you fill

these have them pass them around and

hurry yes right away sir coming up sir

I'm afraid you're not going to be able

to keep Carol very known for these years

why shouldn't I keep it well the minute

just buzzing around like bees around the

hive what time it is

excuse me I've gotta talk with dick bro

no bro

[Music]

am-scray brother wolf am-scray you it's

my father

oh I'm terribly sorry sir I thought it

was the other way sorry that's all right

but you keep the other

I just

you do remember oh oh I thought you were

gonna do that wait a minute I'm not

leaving this house without my wife your

wife

yes mr. Burton she's my wife crazy you

know as well as I do that I'm not - what

were you gonna say Carol

do you remember no father I don't that's

a hideous part about it father I know it

might be true of course it's true now if

you'll excuse me I'll take her home

where she belongs just a minute young

man come with me please

then when I got home she disappeared

I was desperate until I saw a picture in

the paper I left Hotchkiss Falls

immediately but when I went to claim her

she left with you since then I think you

know how hard I tried to get to her it

hadn't been for the publicity I'd have

gone to the police and that's the whole

story and now Derek you'll get your

things we'll be trotting along

thanks mr. Burton for taking such good

care of her never mind that young man

and take your hands off my daughter but

she's not I know she's your wife but if

you don't mind we just won't take your

word for that we'd like a little proof

proof yes proof that's right let's see

your proof if you have any Oh

proof our marriage certificate

sad isn't it all her beautiful memories

gone she doesn't even remember our

marriage certificate

why she was so excited when she signed

it she poked her finger neg well instead

of the pan look there doesn't that bring

it all back to you

[Music]

no it doesn't and I don't believe I ever

saw it before you clean this is her

fingerprint yes I just told you that

please miss if this matter immediately

compare your fingerprint with the one on

the certificate oh that's a wonderful

idea I never thought about that

I bet you didn't right forefinger I

presume that's right I think sure I

wasn't left-handed when I was married to

you right sure

[Applause]

[Music]

why this is awful these prints are

identical lucky big review that

fingerprint you folks were sure hard to

convince this doesn't seem fair I've

only had one daughter and now I've lost

it twice

I'm sorry mr. Burton but it had to come

out sooner or later that Peggy Evans

wasn't your daughter what do you mean

she is my daughter why of course she is

this proof she married you but it

doesn't prove she's not my daughter

she's Peggy Evans this girl is my

daughter whatever her name was

I couldn't be mistaken about that but

how did she get the name of Peggy Evans

that's the question I don't know the

people that brought her up with no where

are they I don't know exactly

Oh how could he know this whole thing's

a fake a frame-up it must be no no no

Donna don't get excited you know what it

does to you she breaks out in a rash Oh

Burt you mean to say you don't know

anything about your wife's background

well you see she had amnesia when I met

her what's more it recurred you know it

kept happening on and off why once I

came home late at night I got into bed

kissed her she gave me a friendly smile

and then said who are you

it was the friendly smile that burned me

up oh how can you I'm sorry but mr.

Burton has the right to know all about

you then one time I was taking a bath

and she won't spare us the details mr.

Stewart what was the name of this town

William it Carol Hotchkiss Falls and

that's what we're going now

come Lambchop leave me alone and I'm

going with you what for why don't you

realize what all this means it last we

found a clue you passed we can go back

to Hotchkiss Falls trace everything this

happened since today i Lois you know

well of course we can we can we can find

all the people that knew you I want to

find out all about your past till I can

protect your future

Bob I want to speak to my father alone

I'll bet you do

will you wait outside out there for me

please

all right do hurry though dear you know

we have a long ride ahead of us father

that man is not my husband call it what

woods intuition if you want but somehow

I know what about the marriage

certificate in the fingerprints you

can't fingerprints be fate may be good

where would you get your finger print of

you never saw it before

and why would a man make up such a story

no I don't know all I know is what I've

told you believe me he's nice nobody's

helpful the police oh no no no let's not

do that I I have a better plan I'll go

to Hotchkiss Falls with mr. Stuart but

you mustn't come along just the two of

us and then I can find out what this is

all about do you think I'm insane let

you go away alone with a man who you

feel is not your husband but don't you

see it if I am alone with him I can find

out everything I can trap him because he

won't be suspecting anything but it

would be different if you were along

because he'd be on his guard

but Carol if I would let you go and

something happened to your way why I

joined I promise you

well maybe but thank you darling I knew

you'd understand

don't forget one thing if anything

happens if he bothers you in any way you

for me immediately I'll sleep with my

clothes on and do be careful please

Father's Day so much I'll be ready to go

with you in a minute but what about mr.

burden

oh he's not coming oh that's too bad

please don't hate me I didn't mean to be

a runaway wife I'll try to make up for

all the trouble I've caused you

I'm sure learn to love you can

hello long distance I want to get hot

just Falls information plate and I think

of what I've gone through on account of

you but would you feel better if you

told me about it don't worry about my

feelings I feel fine now I've got you

where I want you

where do you want me in Hotchkiss Falls

so they can see you're not drown found

well I don't remember being drowned I

mean why should I be drowned on account

of that phony suicide note you let

everybody the store thought I'd drove

you to it I that must have been awkward

oh not at all it was a pleasure not

being able to sleep night after night

torch it into thinking myself a murderer

I did all that all that's only half of

it then you lost me my job

so you're taking me back to Hotchkiss

phones just to get your job back huh

just for that selfish of me isn't it

well you sound as though you don't even

like I don't like you well if that's the

way you feel I suppose we better get

divorced divorced oh I get it you're

still trying to make that amnesia gang

stick well I guess it's your best out of

that Oh

out of what okay okay we'll play it your

way

you have got amnesia and you are my what

do you mean you mean I'm not your wife

now whatever put that idea in your

pretty little head

I'm hungry me too come to think of it

oh look there's a place

all right it doesn't take too long

[Music]

we should high bank we're always happy

to ah good evening folks

come right in always look always ready

to serve this move our hopes well I only

want us that's all right

make yourself right at home there you go

order me a hand up in coffee you know

like I always have dear no onions I'll

be right back

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

Justin's also embarrassing suppose you

didn't remember me at all and suddenly

you found you were married to me

wouldn't you be scared I think you know

pretty well there's nothing to be scared

about I don't believe you I think you're

scared right now

lady oh sorry you haven't even kissed me

this kissed you who kissed me hmm

you want me to well let's be customary

among husbands and why not at all

might help us to get better acquainted

- ha to do that

[Music]

[Applause]

but that's sort of scaring you doesn't

it well I feel better acquainted yeah

don't you I just feel better

[Music]

tell me about a spa will be very happy

I think we must have been hit by was I a

good wife

oh my deal what is your idea

well she has to think I'm smarter than

anybody else in the world and stronger

and better looking and she has to love

to dance with me hmm what else well she

has to be happy with what we've got

instead of discontented with what we

haven't got and what do you do in return

for all that nothing that's what makes

it so ideal I can't imagine any girl

living up to that ideal she could as you

love me well I I guess I have a lot to

learn that matter it's possible

[Music]

you're going to teach me aren't you

everything I know is that your disposal

later we begin first we dance

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

there's a food oh let's don't sit down

all right we'll have a picnic dance

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

I'm laughing at nothing you know feel

dizzy

Bob Johnny I'm not Johnny

certainly isn't you better finish your

sandwich yeah less dead

why'd you look for your good I better

get us where we're going

Hotchkiss Falls come on you sure you

still want to go to Hotchkiss Falls bet

of course I got you want your job back

that's right well let's go

oh it's silly of me I forgot to turn the

key on I guess a little cold that's

funny yeah

are we having trouble of our car folks

yes is there any place around here I get

this thing fixed well is an all-night

garage there it is

yep but it closed at 12 well we'll have

to sleep right here it is

make a pillow for me Bob I don't think

that'll be very comfortable for either

of us

sure it won't I got just one room left

at the hotel motel what motel right over

there I run that too oh that's wonderful

we couldn't stop there

why not darling we'll be ever so much

more cozy than in the car

but we can't do that why of course we

can't dear I'm sure won't be expensive

you see it's sort of our wedding night

but Bowie

that's something thank you thank you I'm

just gonna lock up

hey how much of this be I like to pay in

advance

350 use all the water you want what

isn't it cozy Bob mm-hmm oh I've done a

terrible thing what's the matter well I

have many more money no money have you

looked in your pocket I can't figure it

out I had a couple of bucks right here

but now they're gone come down I guess

we'll have to sit up in the car all

night after all that won't be much like

wedding night well now if this is a

crying shame yeah it's certainly tough

wait come back you're gonna have the

room tonight

oh that's wonderful look what we haven't

any money I'll forget it I'll charge a

little to building maintenance

well it'll snow overhead the best mr.

popper in bungalow we couldn't accept

anything like that what are you gonna

I couldn't sleep right a bit in oh well

you're a darling

you up long enough good night good night

night in the car

Peggy hey do you know how to play

cribbage no I don't you must teach me

sometime

look don't you think this has gone far

enough I mean under the circumstances

maybe I'd better go I tell you what I'll

take another room besides I don't think

mr. public affords but I'll only be a

minute

she can't Bluff me

what am i a man or a mouse mouse

[Music]

No

[Music]

I think I'll get into something

comfortable too

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

the bar that night at the concert when I

called you Peggy you were frightened to

death weren't you

answer me yes yes why what do you

sneaked up behind me shattered in my ear

you would have been frightened too but

you recognized me don't deny it you knew

me when you saw me how do you explain

that well I had seen you before

that day at father's when you were with

the reporters and Jimmy punched you I

saw you from the ha I thought you were

crazy so when I saw you again well

naturally I was scared you you don't

remember me from Hotchkiss Falls no /

what's the difference come to bed

darling that's late oh oh I made a

terrible mistake

I'm not your husband I don't understand

that's all there is to it I'm not your

husband at all but you must be that that

marriage certificate oh that was a

forgery of fake I thought you were a

fake - oh I'll take you home to your

father in the morning

just one more thing your Carroll burden

all right you're not Peggy Evans how do

you know because Peggy Evans was a

whining little coward afraid to face

life she was hysterical and selfish you

were the finest the bravest girl ever

was you are willing to accept me of

complete strangers your husband he left

your home and your father to come with

me because you thought it was right

you're the most wonderful girl I ever

knew that's all no no that's all I

wanted to know thank you thank you very

much I'll maybe a check for your trouble

I haven't been sleeping either I was

thinking with my eyes open you'll feel

better when your father gets here why

should he come here I phoned your house

after I left you last night I thought

you'd want to get rid of me as soon as

possible

he ought to be here in a minute please

don't do that I I know I got a terrible

thing to be but I can't stand seeing you

cry that's not what I'm crying no never

gonna see you again do you want to keep

on seeing me after what I've done

yes I do wanna

because I crazy about you can't be

that's impossible it is not it isn't no

gosh that's what I've been thinking

about all night thinking how it could

never happen thinking what a fool I was

to even think about it

but now sorry I guess I must be hearing

things I thought you said you were crazy

about me well I'm right you did say it

Carol will you please hold still for I

took this off your car last night when

we arrived that's why you mustn't touch

me ever what's that gonna do it I

thought Carol can't you see

you took that off my car last night why

answer me why because

I am piggy Evans I couldn't go out

cheating you

I know what you think of me that I'm a

whining little coward afraid to face

life but I had 10 lakhs

go away until you've heard what I have

to say

I'm not asking you to even like me again

I just want you to know that I'm not

what you think I didn't mean to make you

lose your job how could I've known about

that I didn't mean to steal anything to

mr. burden honestly just writes him

wrong I didn't have sense enough to wait

until you came along

how could I have known that you were you

were whatever's waiting for

all right I'm not even worth listening

to

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

every instinct I've got tells me how to

beat you over the head every instinct

with one

I couldn't eat you know unless you

turned out to be a female impersonator

now I bet you my bottom dollar you're

not Caro Peggy

whatever your name is darling

[Music]

you've got grease all over your face

[Music]

I'm so sorry so terribly sorry what's

your call I put it there here in Austin

but I don't mean the grease I mean for

everything I've done

how could I've done it how can't be

unhappy done

forgive me

if you love someone what else can you do

[Music]

Bob you are going to wait from the

archer why were you going to jail to

jail that's silly

do you know mr. Burton he's sweet but he

has a terrible temper when I tell him

the truth well he won't rest no no

you're all wrong I won't let you I won't

even let him see you I'll keep him out

pull out she hasn't been feeling very

well perhaps if you came back later

tomorrow or sometime don't listen to him

I'm all right she's had a spell or

something isn't serious nothing to worry

about it oh my poor angel well she

doesn't do you nothing really

she's just saying that because he loves

me and I love him he's trying to protect

me Oh support crazy Tim Oh be quiet

let her talk no no I'm not trying to

protect her she's trying to protect me I

forged that married certificate I even

had a rubber stamp made of her

fingerprint and faked that too I'm not

her husband at all you fiend

why did you do it well I thought she was

somebody else a girl I used to know

Peggy Evans but she's dead when did you

discover that I always knew it I was

responsible I mean that is no use Bob

you can't stop me oh yeah I I don't know

how to start it whatever she says it's a

lie go on

I can't even believe myself that I could

have been us rotten in this contemptible

in this heartless as I have

I know you won't forgive me it's a good

question but I'd rather die than hurt

you like this I know you won't believe

but I do love you you're an angel I'd

give anything in the world if you were

my father but you're not

I'm not Carroll I never was I'm Peggy

yeah Pete

please please I am telling the truth you

must believe me tell them that I am

Peggy Evans

why should I don't believe you are

[Music]

[Applause]

neither do i but I guess I oughta know

my own daughter we're going to Hotchkiss

Falls

oh my dear we're going home I'll get

your things I can't go online the rest

of my life I can't go and cheat a little

burden you watch your mouth washed out

with soap

and now's as good a time of any stop

that sniffling Peggy Peggy heavens then

you do believe me bother of course I do

[Music]

well then go tell father

let me mr. Bergman send your father

nothing Saji knows it anyway but he's

not my father

what do you mean he knows it anyway I

carry master Cornelius like a book I

look back I think you knew it before he

came over here why didn't he just say so

two reasons would it kill him to admit

it even fooled and to kill him to give

you up

she wants me to go on Venus daughter if

you had a lick of sense you'd see that

you know what he said out there was just

his way of forgiving you

someday we'll come right out of it but

don't try to close it he could be awful

as stubborn sometimes

but how could he want me I don't belong

stuff enosis you made him happy ain't

been for 17 years

that's belonging turned on show what

you're made of

if I could just believe you can get

[Music]

lately but don't be silly

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

you still want me to go home with you

of course I do if you want to come do

you well I'd like to see anybody try to

stop me

hey what about me yeah what about him I

love well that's a fine how-do-you-do

can help well I've got a daughter I

might as well settle myself with a

son-in-law just one big happy family

well if you're going to start building a

family at your age you better get going

I'll give you just three minutes how

much generally the name is Bob Carol the

name is Peggy Johnny maybe we better

just call each other mr. and mrs. they'd

be talking in all this just a waste of

time

[Music]
