Dean, which color is in the middle?

- Yeah, that's not supposed to happen.

It should be orange.

you can turn around and face everybody

So Christian, here's the deal.

I've got a pad of paper over here.

On this pad of paper,

I've written down a bunch of different random items, okay?

I want you to think of any one of these random items,

but first I'm gonna show them to everybody.

Make sure everybody sees that they're all totally different.

No two things are exactly the same.

We got think about things like we got a pineapple there,

a kitten, there's a snake, glasses, cup of coffee,

there's an iPhone, pizza, laptop, antique vase, flowers.

You get it, all different, right?

Christian, here's the deal.

You're just gonna lift and peek at any one of these items.

Totally up to you.

Just lift and peek.

Don't let anybody see.

You're not gonna let the audience see.

You're not gonna let the camera see.

And most importantly, Christian,

you're not gonna let me see.

You ready? - Ready.

- Cool, go ahead and lift and peek.

Get one of the items in your mind.

Did you get one? - I got one.

- Cool, Christian, hold that item in your mind, okay?

Now, Christian, you'll also notice

there are some boxes over here on stage, okay?

Numbered one through six.

Christian, I want you to do me a favor.

Name any number between one and six, go.

- Two. - Two, this one here?

- Yeah, two. - Number two.

Christian, I'm gonna ask you something.

So, so Christian, I know all of this seemed totally random

and like it really made no sense

other than blowing off some steam.

But the truth is, Christian,

there was a reason why we did all this.

Remember in the beginning I asked you

to name a number, you named number two.

I asked you if you wanna change your mind.

You said no, yes?

- No.

- Yeah, Christian, hold onto this.

There we go.

So Christian, I also asked you to think of an object.

Anything you wanted.

For the first time, name out loud.

What is it that you thought of?

- Fish.

- A fish?

- What's your name man?

- Kareem. - Kareem.

- Kareem, nice to meet you.

Kareem, what was your favorite sport growing up?

- Basketball. - Hockey?

- Sure. - Good idea.

You look like a hockey player, Kareem.

Kareem, my favorite sport growing up was hockey.

I'd go play with my friends, my brother.

We'd go on the street.

Now, growing up we had big dreams of playing professional.

So what we'd do is to decide which team we wanted to be,

we would put these pieces of paper down

that had different team names.

For example, Jets, Flames, Devils,

Canucks, Kraken, you get the point.

Just a bunch of different hockey team names.

All we're gonna do Kareem,

is we're just gonna spread these on the floor,

spread 'em out, just like that.

(dramatic music)

That's pretty random, can we agree?

- Yeah, definitely. - Completely random.

Kareem, I have a ball here.

What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna stick handle over the,

over the papers with the ball.

At any point you feel comfortable,

I want you to just give me any number you'd like, okay?

What number are you thinking of?

- Eight. - Eight.

All right, we're gonna stick handle eight times.

Ready, let's go.

One, two, three, four,

five, six, seven, eight.

Kareem, this is where I'm at, all right?

Now you could think I maybe went there.

Would you like me to move the ball to another card?

- Uh, yeah.

- Yeah, where would you like me to go?

Which way?

- To your right.

- To my right, right there sound good, or...

- [Kareem] Perfect.

- Perfect, all right, Kareem, here's what we're gonna do.

I'm gonna place the stick down.

You stopped on this cart here.

You picked eight stick handles,

then decided to move one.

Just so you can see, they're still all different.

Sabers, Ducks,

Oilers, Panthers.

You get the point that they're, they're all different.

You stopped right here on this card, correct?

Kareem, that was a free choice again, right?

- Yep.

- Kareem, you stopped on the Penguins.

Now Kareem, I actually have a jersey here.

So growing up we didn't have

the money to buy the cool jerseys.

What we'd do is we would take a piece of tape

and then write our team name on.

Kareem, my jersey from growing up

actually said the Penguins.

But Kareem, it gets better.

You got to pick a number to stick handle.

- [Kareem] Yeah. - You picked eight.

- My jersey number was actually...

Good, I wanna show you something really interesting.

These are not normal cards.

These are states.

Every single one of these, it has a state on it.

This is what I taught my kids

when they were little,

how to learn all 56 states.

Right here, these cards.

(audience laughs)

When I travel around the world doing magic,

I notice that in every country

they have traditional ways of shuffling cards.

This is the way you'll see whenever you go in United

States. This is the way you'll see it in China.

This is how you see it in Italy.

These guys who play cards at little coffee houses in Italy,

they take five cards from the front,

they shuffle 'em to the back.

One, two, three, four, five.

And then the same five cards

from the back return to the front.

One, two, three, four, five. (audience laughs)

Nothing happens.

(audience laughs) (upbeat music)

Here's the way they shuffle in Brooklyn where I grew up.

(cards flutter)

(audience laughs)

Don't play cards with those guys.

And then of course, this is the way you shuffle

when you wanna impress people.

(audience cheers)

Let me try it and see what happens on this side.

All right, here we go, wow, very cool.

All right, I'm gonna take about half the cards.

I'm gonna give 'em to you.

You shuffle and look through them.

You can see that they're completely just, you know,

I'm just giving you random amounts

so then you can do the same.

Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle.

So listen, I have a friend who has a little baby,

and the mom, she can hear this baby

basically like if there's a, a orchestra in her living room,

she can hear the baby up in the room,

as if it's completely dead silent around her.

And I thought to myself, "Wait, what?"

And she said, "Eh, it's just a mother thing.

We can hear the child.

It doesn't matter how much loudness is going on around us,

it absolutely doesn't matter.

We just have this maternal instinct."

So I thought to myself, "That's a trick.

Gosh, that's gotta be a magic trick."

But can you focus on the things you want to focus on

and completely delete all the other stuff?

Well, that's life.

We have to all figure that out.

So did you shuffle them? - Yes.

- [Ivan] Are you pretty happy with the amount?

- Yes.

- All right, gimme those babies back.

All right, cool.

And then there was another guy that shuffled.

Where was that?

And did you shuffle them pretty well too?

- [Audience Member] I think so.

- And how long did you shuffle those for?

Like- - Maybe a minute.

- All right, cool, maybe a minute.

Okay, everybody standing right now

should only have one state.

Can't have more than one or it'll,

it'll be too hard for you.

I want you to look down and say it out loud to,

I mean, say it to yourself in your mind.

And on the count of three, here's what you're gonna do.

You're gonna shout the name of the state

that you're holding at me as loudly as you can.

But the people seated, your job is more important.

When they shout their states,

I want you guys that are seated

to shout any state that you want at the same exact time.

And by the way, if you're seated

and you don't know any states, ask somebody.

(audience laughs)

Everybody in this room is gonna shout

the name of a state,

I'm focused on only the people standing.

Deal? (upbeat music)

And I won't be paying attention either.

everybody's gonna shout.

you shout whatever you want.

Really loudly so everybody knows

I do this in the mirror for a couple hours.

It looks good.

You probably know how this works, that's okay.

What you do is you, you cut a hole

in the back of the bottle.

Now it is important that you drink the root beer,

dump it out before you cut the hole,

or else you'll ruin your cool shoes.

You don't want to do that.

Susanna, I brought another one here.

Check this out.

So you can do it too.

There's a hole right there in the back.

You stick your thumb in here and just go like this.

Oh, oh. (audience laughs)

It's a root beer float.

If you get bored of that though,

you can do it for a couple hours, right?

And then it's not as good of a trick.

What you do when you get bored of that though,

Susanna, is on the back.

There is that hole.

And you can always take that hole,

and just rip it right off.

While you're shuffling those cards,

I want you to take a look at this glass.

If you could step up here,

you'll notice that this is an eight by 10

solid piece of glass. (taps glass)

Please examine it.

You can touch it anywhere.

Everything looks completely cool.

Copacetic, come on down.

Here's what I'm gonna have you do.

Turn your cards face up as they are.

And I want you to make a huge mess.

Spread 'em out so that you can make sure

that you can see all of the cards, yeah?

You might even see your card in there, do you?

- [Brendan] Yeah.

- [Eric] Perfect, just right there.

That's even better.

Let's put it right about there in the middle.

- [Brendan] It's there.

- Awesome. - Cool.

- I'm gonna give you this. - Okay.

- You've got a really cool job.

I want you to bring the cards up here

and I want you to smash them flat against the glass.

Right about there.

That's perfect.

Hold them with both hands.
