Good day, guys. Holy Critics signing in.

Picture this. An earthquake hits, a

building goes down, and suddenly it's

not about flashy explosions. It's about

survival in the dark with the walls

closing in. That's the setup for Trapped

Beneath the Earth, a '90s TV disaster

flick that puts Chris Kristophen front

and center as the guy you'd trust to get

you out alive when everything's falling

apart. If you're into claustrophobic

thrills and old school rescue drama,

this one's worth the ride.

Ladies and gentlemen, good evening. As

you must certainly be aware by now,

there has been a major earthquake in

southern Utah tonight. Our initial

estimates from the University of Utah

Seismology Lab have placed that

earthquake at at least 6.5 on the RTOR

scale. I say at least because the

initial reports we have begun to receive

from the region indicate significant

property damage, possible loss of life.

>> I understand now we have Cynthia Daniels

standing by. I believe we're going to go

to her right now. Cynthia,

>> I'm standing in the area reported to be

the epicenter of this very strong quake.

As you can see, there is mass confusion

behind us. To be quite honest with you,

we're having a hard time comprehending

what has really happened out here

ourselves. If we can move this way, you

can get through the crowd. Excuses. We

want to show you what exactly did happen

>> right here. Here the pavement has broken

off and what you've seen is what appears

to be an empty space. But officials tell

us that before this quake there was

actually an eightstory apartment complex

out here.

They're telling us that an earthquake

has swallowed whole, if you will, an

eight-story apartment building, made the

thing disappear right now. A car has

crashed over the side and the

firefighters are dropping the lines.

They're going down to I don't know see

what they can do.

Uh, this is John. Can you hear me?

>> This is about as unbelievable and

frightening a scene as any of us can

ever recall or imagine. We're all

sitting here stunned. Is it possible

that anybody could be alive down there?

>> Oh god, we we we really don't know. It

is very cloudy out here. The details are

coming in uh you know, every moment. The

best thing we can do is is search out

the details. I can tell you that I

talked to a number of officials and

authorities out here. These these are

the men and women who are trained to

deal with these kind of disasters with

earthquakes and all sorts of maybe fall

down the drain.

>> No honey, you can't go down the drain.

There's no drain big enough for anybody

to go down.

>> But what if we went down anyway?

>> Well, if there was somehow a drain big

enough for even little girls to go down,

I guess we'd get underneath. We'd pump

the water back up and you'd shoot right

up to the top.

>> There's been a big earthquake in Utah.

>> But you want to bet he's already on his

way there.

>> Continuing now with our live coverage of

this earthquake disaster in southern

Utah. We take you right back out to the

scene now. The scene of that eightstory

apartment building apparently swallowed

into a fissure in the earth by a 6.5

RTOR scale earthquake. You see the

rescue and fire teams out there. Our

Cynthia Daniel is also standing by.

Cynthia, can you hear us?

>> Yes, I can. And I've got something new

to report here. I just talked to an

on-site geologist who gave me the first

hint of what might have happened out

here. Apparently, the ground beneath it

is literally honeycombed with old

abandoned mines, including this

building. So, what they think happened

is that this earthquake, which was

really a killer of 6.5, might have made

this building crash down through several

levels of these old abandoned mines. And

what they're really worried and

concerned about now is that it may have

created a so-called water bed effect.

That means the water table may have also

disturbed.

cross here, but there are an awful lot

of eyewitnesses. Now, ma'am, I know you

were here just shortly after the

earthquake hit.

horrible.

>> Oh my goodness. The the anguish of that

woman is uh something we all we all feel

right now all over this region. This is

a a monumental disaster by any measure.

You could actually feel these people's

hopes rise when Stan Mather and his crew

arrive. That's because Stan Mather is to

search and rescue what Michael Jordan is

to basketball. This is a man who has

been the top expert in his field for

many, many years. In fact, I was talking

to a firefighter when they announced

that the Mather team was coming in. And

he told me that Mather and his two sons

who helped round out the team have

literally saved thousands of lives all

over the world.

we're working the bugs out, but it's

still about somebody hitching up their

pants and going in and bringing them

out.

>> When you were buried in that coal mine

in Kentucky, did you think you were

going to make it out?

>> You've done your homework on it.

>> Why do you do it? Travel the world

risking your life?

>> Pull one person out alive. It's worth

stairwell access?

>> Yeah,

nothing symmetrical, that's for sure.

completely shut off. According to the

plans, all of the apartments in the

corner were converted to twotory town

houses. Therefore, you can go from 8 to

7 in the same apartment.

from. The whole east side's out. The

northwest corner is completely smashed.

>> I can map out an exit to the southwest

corner with a scanner. Then we just need

someone to go down and get them out.

When we bring them out, it's time to

shut this thing down before somebody

gets killed. Not dead already.

I'm not the biggest fan of uh disaster

movies, especially the made for TV kind,

but I'll admit this one had more tension

than I expected. The earthquake setup

was classic TV movie cheese. But once

they got inside the collapsed building,

the claustrophobia actually worked. You

could feel the walls pressing in and it

gave the whole thing this lowbudget but

oddly effective intensity. Chris

Kristopherson was the anchor here.

grally, calm, exactly the kind of guy

you'd want leading a rescue. He didn't

overplay it, which made the chaos

happening around him feel steadier. His

son, played by David Nuome, wasn't too

bad either. Their fatherson push and

pull gave the story its heart. Some of

the supporting cast though,

let's just say a few of the line

deliveries had that NBC Tuesday Night

Movie written all over them. What I

found interesting was the film focused

less on spectacle and more on procedure.

Crawling through tight spaces, um making

tough choices about who to save first.

that gave it a certain realism, even if

the script sometimes leaned into

cliches. The editing kept the pace

tight, and the set design, all those

crushed hallways and dripping concrete,

did a lot of the heavy lifting in

selling the danger. In terms of

negatives, I thought it was pretty

formulaic, almost like a TV pilot for a

new series. It was mostly predictable

and the melodramatic side characters

felt like padding. Still, as a small

screen disaster yarn,

it delivered enough suspense to keep me

invested. I'm giving Trapped Beneath the

Earth three out of five stars.

Serviceable, occasionally gripping, but

certainly not one I'll be racing back
