is very similar to banana oil.

could have triggered the attack.

She drove west towards the interior-

eventually went off the highway.

And that's where all cell service cut out.

And that supports the theory-

that she was killed somewhere out there.

Yeah and then they transferred her body and her car-

back to her apiary.

So, Carley Wannamaker and Hazel Lee

both have apiaries out that way.

That makes two of our suspects who own hives-

where Nancy was likely killed.

So the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed

this lovely creature here

is a Varroa mite.

Apparently Garrett's hives were just rife with them.

And that means-?

Varroa mites-

are tiny predators that prey on bees.

They are so deadly-

that they are wiping out bee populations-

right across North America.

So that must be what caused Garrett's colony to die off.

See the thing is-

because Newfoundland is an island-

it's one of the only places that Varroa mites don't exist.

And there are very strict regulations in place-

to keep it that way.

How'd they end up in Garrett's hive?

Well-

that's a good question.

Nancy must have spotted them-

when was over there.

The Ministry also found another interesting thing-

in Garrett's hive.

One of the bee corpses was marked.

A dead queen with two red dots-

painted on her thorax.

Why would someone do that?

I mean, some beekeepers paint their queens-

so that they can spot them separately from the worker bees.

But I've never seen a two-dot system before.

Maybe it was some sort of message.

Maybe.

But I know one thing for sure.

We've reached the limits of this hive mind.

Yeah, it's a nightmare.

so they can tell what queen belongs to them.

Well, sometimes-

very rarely-

there could be two active queens in a hive.

To tell them apart-

you paint a single dot on one-

and a second on the other.

Any idea who paints their queens red?

Red was Nancy's colour.

The red colour suggests the queen was Nancy's.

Yeah, well I'm sure she would have given one

to Garrett to help him restart his colony.

But it would mean that she had Varroa mites in her colony.

That just doesn't seem like something

that Nancy would allow.

What's he looking for?

We are looking for a number of things.

First are queens marked with red dots.

Red is the marking system you would have used-

when you and Nancy were a couple.

And earlier-

Rex was also looking for Varroa mites.

Well, he won't find any.

They don't exist in Newfoundland.

Actually I'm pretty sure they're in these very hives.

Rex can smell the difference-

between bees and mites.

And he signaled the mites are already here.

But you already know that.

You see, this is what I think happened.

Garrett's colony had collapsed.

He asked Nancy for help.

When she examined his hives, she spottted two things.

Varroa mites and a queen with two dots.

Garrett had your queen.

Your camera trap recorded him stealing it.

Nancy put it all together.

She realized instantly-

that he had gotten his queen from you.

Now, Garrett knew how to steal a queen.

But what Garrett didn't realize

was the queen he had taken was infected.

Nancy confronted you about that, didn't she?

Of course, you denied everything.

But you knew she wouldn't give up.

She'd come looking for proof.

And she didn't give up.

She came out here to your apiary-

searching for answers.

But she didn't know-

that you had doused her suit in banana oil.

She was swarmed.

We know that she was killed-
