[girl] Tell me, what do you think is the meaning of life?

She left him everything.

I'd rather have her.

I just settled Brenda's estate. Let me invest in Loomi.

I need you to know that I know that I messed up.

[Ellis] Sylvie's amazing.

I agree.

So why do you keep trying to find something wrong with her?

This is my home.

I always thought love was enough.

Spot opened up in the clinical trial.

It's Finn, she passed yesterday morning.

[girl] It's not what you've done. It's who you are.

It's your heart. That's the whole point of living.

-[gentle somber music] -[people chatter distantly]

[Ellis] When you choose to love, you always lose.

We all know the risks, and yet we do it anyway.

Isn't that wild? [chuckles]

[gentle music]

Is loss such a bad thing?

Can't it motivate us to savor every kiss and every hug?

We always think we have more time.

What if instead, we choose to embrace what it is,

or what it was, with love,

and know it made a difference?

[gentle melancholic music]

Oh gosh, this is better.

You do know they sell shampoo across state lines, right?

Oh, how am I going on tour? This doesn't make sense.

Oh, it makes sense to me. John must be excited for you.

Doesn't feel like it, honestly.

Get that he doesn't love that I'll be gone for the holidays,

but when I asked him to come out with me,

he said it was too much time off work.

Well, he's not the only one who gets to be successful.

He's acting weird. I can't put my finger on it.

It's like he's annoyed or something.

And you've told him this?

No.

But you will, right?

I will. God, when you make that face, it's chilling.

What face? This face?

[laughs] Yes. Yes.

Have you made any plans?

No. I rather enjoyed the annual festivities at Le Bon.

Food, and the cocktails. I'll likely stay in this year.

I don't mind a solo dinner.

When I was little, my dad used to make

the most delicious roast on Boxing Day.

Well, you can make it your own.

Dinner with a holiday cocktail.

Mm.

You can call it Krismas. [laughs]

Oh, okay. I'm gonna go before you write a song about it.

One more thing.

No, don't I know what you're gonna ask.

It's crazy you won't even be at one show.

I feel like I crushed your record label dream.

Oh, it wasn't you. Well, it kind of was actually.

What? Oh my god.

Don't, we're not doing this now.

Please tell me you're not quitting for good.

No, I was at Vizi almost 20 years,

and then it was over in the flip of a switch.

I need to be productive, I just don't know

what that looks like at the moment.

Plenty of young musicians in the city could use a Kris.

Mm. [chuckles]

What?

Oh, you're just reminding me of this um,

therapeutic music class at the hospital

for kids in treatment.

Finn used to chastise them loudly for playing offbeat,

which they often did.

Sounds like they could use a Kris.

Mm.

Yeah, she is very excited

about that sleepover tomorrow night.

Yeah, I know.

I'm gonna order like a very large pizza and watch a movie.

No, a whole movie?

I know. From start to finish.

Well, easy now.

[Claire chuckles]

Oh.

Mm.

I don't think I've, I've been away from her for this long.

We're gonna FaceTime every morning.

Yeah.

And Houston's only an hour behind.

Yeah, it's gonna be great, and I'm just finding things

to be needlessly sad about.

What's that?

Oh, [chuckles] this is my holiday bonus.

A candle.

This is usually where I would take a jab at your boss

for being so cheap but, kinda be a hypocrite.

Can't afford to give bonuses this year,

and especially Ellis.

It's all right. Okay, I'm outta here.

Hang on.

Um.

[envelope crinkles]

There's a story.

Do I wanna hear it?

I think we should sit.

I think we should, uh--

-Here I'll just, uh-- -Uh, uh, how,

-how do you-- -Okay, so the last time

that your mom came over, you had just gotten your diagnosis.

It was a lot. And uh, there was this moment.

What kind of moment?

Uh, I started crying, and then she felt bad.

Well, by feel bad I mean she wanted me to stop crying.

Right.

So she had this diamond ring that she had bought

on a whim, and she told me to keep it.

So you--

I sold it.

Once I knew we didn't need the money

for the experimental treatment, I was able to pay in advance

on Anna's tuition.

And then I spoke to hospital billing

and I had them lower the final bill

so that we could pay it off.

I'm sorry. I don't, I don't really know what to say.

Millie Perry needs less jewelry, sure,

so I think you did her a favor.

I just wanna be honest with you.

And I admit, I initially had a very different plan

for this money.

And then you got this infection and,

something clicked.

[sighs] I realized that I had a problem.

That I have a problem.

So, I started talking to someone,

which I should've done a long time ago,

but I'm doing it now.

And, this is what's left.

So, bonus money?

[envelop thuds]

Oh, so you're putting it on me.

I didn't, I didn't say that.

You didn't have to. It's always on me.

Okay, can we, can we have one conversation

without turning it into a fight?

You're doing it again. Why are you even with me?

-Stop. -Seriously.

No, I hate when you say that.

See, it, you could be living an entirely different life.

A single guy in the city, dating whoever you want,

whenever you want.

Instead, you meet some random girl from New Jersey--

-Aria-- - And a year later

-you ask her to marry you. -Aria.

It never made sense.

You're spinning right now.

That's what you're doing,

-your spinning. -No, I think,

no, I think it makes you feel better to say that.

What are you talk?

Okay, look, can we just take one time out?

All you want is someone to take care of.

And I don't need you to do that anymore.

I'm not trying to take care of you.

It's like you want me to fail.

I don't!

Okay, so what is it?

It's that you can't expect me to hop on board

with all of this, when not that long ago

I was picking you up off the floor

because you were curled up into a ball!

Do you have any idea what that's like for me?

To dread coming home some days

not sure what kind of shape you'd be in?

I'm worried about you.

Please don't act like this is coming outta nowhere.

[soft somber music]

[cellphone buzzes]

[John scoffs]

The car's here.

I'll uh, I'll walk you down. Okay?

No, no.

[zipper scratches]

Aria.

Can you just…

[bags clatter]

[suitcase wheels rumble]

[gentle sorrowful music]

[door bangs shut]

[gentle sorrowful music]

This is not the best time.

Yeah, I heard you, but I don't care.

Honestly, it's better she's not around.

These last few months have been beyond brutal.

[door bangs shut]

One sec.

[gentle sombre music]

Yeah, sorry, uh,

listen, I appreciate the call,

but like I said, I don't care.

Desi and I are not on speaking terms.

I wish you best of luck at the Boston office.

[gentle music]

Here now.

Got it.

[gentle uplifting music]

[bag rustles]

[knocking at door]

[door creaks]

-Hey. -Hey.

-Uh-- - Whoo.

Turns out there's mold in my apartment too.

What? Really?

No, but uh, can I still stay over?

Please?

[gentle music]

Come.

[door clicks shut]

[pop music in background]

Would you like another?

Please.

Yoink.

My ex recommended this place

and I wanted so badly to hate it.

Sigh.

I uh, I can be rude to you if that helps.

[Victor laughs]

Be honest.

How many people talk to you about their breakups?

Everyone. Everyone. [Victor laughs]

I don't mind at all.

I just know that some people need to talk.

I uh, I recently went through one myself.

-Wanna talk about it? -No.

Understood.

[Ellis laughs]

I uh, I tend to read a lot more when I'm sad.

I don't know if you're one of those people.

-Yeah. -The last few weeks

have been buried in philosophy.

-Ooh. -Ooh.

All these contrasting ideas on like, love and loss.

When you think about it, most of our conversations

are focused on one of those things, or both.

-Mm-hmm. -Like this one.

Oh my gosh, so true.

[laughs] Yeah, there's like,

so many different perspectives.

There's this one concept, when you choose to love,

you always lose.

Like, we all know the risks and yet we do it anyway.

Isn't that wild?

And like, is loss such a bad thing?

I mean like, yeah, it hurts. Like, I get that.

But can't it motivate us to savor every kiss and every hug?

We always think we have more time.

What if instead we chose to embrace what it is

or what it was, with love,

and know that it made a difference.

Anyway.

I like you.

Stop.

[laughs] Victor.

Ellis. Uh, don't tell your ex.

Oh, it wouldn't matter.

He only hears the sound of his own voice.

Oh god, not one of those.

[Victor laughs]

Hey uh, may I?

Oh my god.

-Yeah? -Yeah, go for it. Absolutely.

Whoa.

Wow. I'm working on a piece for a New York magazine.

The idea is to capture the collective experience

through the locals,

the strangers who gather in neighborhood places.

If you have a portfolio, I'd love to take a look.

Yeah, I would, I, I would love to show you.

Great. I'll give you my number.

Great.

[Kris] So you get what I'm going for, right?

Sure, it's a great idea.

Never imagined you working with kids, but it makes sense.

You've got a huge heart.

All right, stop complimenting me. Still cross with you.

I know, but I'm happy you called though.

Yeah.

Missed you.

Yeah, me too.

All right, I need to get home.

The in-laws are waiting on me for dinner.

Oh, well that makes me feel much better

about my solo roast.

Talk soon?

Yeah. Happy holidays.

You too.

-Bye. -See ya.

[Nate] Kris, someone mentioned

that you're a plant sitter now,

so I'm adding one more to your list,

but don't worry, she won't be a bother.

We never got to finish our conversation the other night,

and I couldn't leave without you knowing how I feel,

about bamboo, of course.

You know, I, I didn't want bamboo at first.

There was no space.

Timing seemed off, and yet she grew on me.

Maybe things would've been different

if we had run into each other sooner, or later.

It's a curious thing, this idea of timing.

We move in and out of each other's lives,

sometimes by choice, and sometimes you don't get to choose.

[train hums]

We may never know or understand why,

all of these conflicting emotions

happening at the same exact time.

Which leads me to this.

Just because I have to let bamboo go right now

doesn't mean that I won't miss her,

so much so, it hurts.

Please take care of her while I'm gone.

And when I get back, I hope to find her at the bar

where we first collided all those months ago.

I think that's when all this started.

But maybe our journey is only just beginning.
