CHORAL MUSIC
DOOR OPENS
Lord, into thy hands I go.
I knew you'd come.
PHONE CHIMES
Oh...
Oh, hello. Hmm. I've got a match.
What?
What do you reckon?
I don't know, I... I don't know him, so...
Let's see.
Er...
We're being spied on.
Oh, yeah. Well, these guys probably don't see many women.
What's with the dog? It's in every photo.
- What have you got against dogs? - He's trying too hard.
I never trust a man in a turtleneck either.
Christ, you're picky.
Maybe that's why you didn't find anyone at speed dating.
- Yeah, she's got a point. - I'm not picky.
Maybe I've just decided that casual dating's not
the way forward for me.
What, are you saving yourself for the one?
I don't know. Maybe.
Bit of a strange one, this.
I mean, how would you know if someone's the one?
Well, exactly. I mean,
I thought my first boyfriend was the one,
but it turns out I just liked his car.
Well, we were 17, you know,
it was a biggie.
So, where's the body?
Down there.
Good. I think we're just about done here.
Brother Lucas Drummond.
CAMERA CLICKS
He was struck from the front with a cylindrical blade
about 15 centimetres long and five millimetres wide.
Oh, that's very precise for you.
Just trying to reach your high standards.
So, what's this?
A candle spike?
Mm-hm.
So it's probably here already. Right?
So, maybe the murder wasn't premeditated.
It most likely punctured his liver or his spleen.
An autopsy will confirm it,
but he probably didn't die instantly.
There's no blood.
Er, there is, but it's at an odd angle.
I mean, it suggests that Brother Lucas
wiped the murder weapon clean himself.
So, no fingerprints.
Why would he try and protect his own murderer?
It's all a bit Last Supper, isn't it?
- Yeah. So, who's Judas? - Mm.
MONROE COUGHS
I'm the abbot here at St John's. Father Colin.
I'm Detective Inspector Monroe.
This is DS Hunter, Patience Evans.
Sorry for your loss.
Thank you. Overall,
quite shaken up, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Of course. Who found the body?
Brother Thomas. He's a novice.
He opens up the church in the morning.
So, was the door still locked when you got there?
It was.
How well did you know Brother Lucas?
Erm, he's only been here for two...two months.
He was transferred from another monastery.
Yeah.
Any revelations in the archives about our unfortunate monk?
- Nope. - Mm, well, I guess it makes sense. I mean, he's not a criminal.
Well, what is strange is there's no record
of him in any administrative system.
So there's no national insurance number or birth certificate.
Yeah, and there's no family or anything mentioned in
the monastic records, which is unusual apparently.
So, what? Our victim was using a false identity?
- Maybe. - Jesus. Do we know anything?
Well, we do know that he was transferred
to St John's two months ago, and before that he was here.
Yeah. And then in 2010 he joined a monastery in
the Outer Hebrides, in South...Oo-ist?
- It's South U-ist. - Yeah, that's what I said.
And then a few years later he was ordained.
Yeah. And then around the same time, look who turns up.
Oh, now that is shady.
I need you all in the meeting room.
Now? They're quite busy, sir.
Yes. So am I.
We've had some really interesting results from our local focus groups.
They want to know what you're doing, who you are, and that you care.
I had no idea the job we do could be boiled down to a...
Mind map, sir.
Literally, it's trust equals public confidence,
equals more offenders in jail.
Oh. So, we just do that
and then more criminals get locked up?
Brilliant. Sorted. Want a candied pecan?
Erm, no, thanks. So...
Seriously, they are mind-blowing.
I got them from a farmer's market in Wakefield. Here.
Yeah. No, I'm good. I'm good.
Yeah, go on, then, I'll have one of them.
Right, right, guys, sorry, can we just...can we just....?
Please, please,
everyone, we need to focus. Sorry, Zinzi.
Basically, confidence in this police station is an all-time low
- and, well... - LOUD MUNCHING
Shh!
Well, if you were pulling in
the same numbers as your old team in Manchester,
that'd be a different story.
They'd be invented.
But we can turn this around.
What are you all doing this Sunday?
Erm, I don't know. Eating, sleeping, avoiding my neighbour.
Not any more.
I've booked you a stall at the local Viking Festival.
Oh, oh, cool.
"Celebrates York's ties to Viking settlers."
Oh, thanks, Will. That degree's really paying off.
Yeah, they do re-enactments and they sell helmets.
OK.
Yeah, and it is the perfect opportunity for
the people of York to meet you.
Well, thank you very much, Zinzi.
That all sounds very, er, exciting.
And we will definitely all be there.
- Yay! - SHE CLAPS
Please wait here.
There he is. Father Shady.
Why don't you answer your phone?
The monastery is a place for quiet reflection.
Why didn't you mention that
for ten years you were in South...Erst?
I don't, erm...
The same monastery as Brother Lucas?
Not here, please.
So, there's no record of Lucas Drummond ever existing.
So, who was this man?
I never actually knew who he was.
I didn't need to,
I knew his soul.
His past was of no interest to me.
Do you know anything that could help us find out who he was?
I don't know. I... There was someone he spoke of.
A woman. Katie, I think.
He said they were soulmates.
That's all he told me.
Just Katie? Not even a surname?
PHONE RINGS
- Monroe. - How can a soul have a mate?
That's an entirely conceptual entity.
Don't ask me. I ain't got a clue, obviously.
Well, I just... That suggests that you've only got one chance.
So what if they live in the Yucatan?
Why would they live in the Yucatan?
Or they're already married.
I'm not sure I'm following.
Well, I just want to know...
..how...what do you do if you've messed up your chance with someone?
Oh. This is about SOCO boy, isn't it?
Look, it takes time to get over...
Yeah, we need to get down to the mortuary,
if you two have finished sharing in the diary room.
HE SCOFFS
Scarring's well under way, so must have occurred within
the last three to four weeks.
What's that all about?
Yeah. Probably penitence or something.
Yeah, well, monks were into self-flagellation
back in the day, weren't they?
Yeah. Yeah. All a bit kinky if you ask me.
These lacerations, they don't look like they were self-inflicted.
No, I agree.
So, what? This monk was tortured?
Have we heard anything back from the monastery in South Uist?
Not what we were expecting.
Lucas Drummond was expelled and came to York to atone.
What for?
Believe me, I've asked, but they've gone quiet on me.
They only take calls at 3pm on Wednesdays.
What? They can't do that. Can you pull rank, sir?
You want me to pull rank on the Pope?
Jake, contact the police in South...Wuist.
They shouldn't be allowed to hide behind their religion.
Like, who do they think they are?
Steady on.
Before you go, Zinzi gave me this rota
for the Viking Festival on Sunday.
What's with the elephant in the helmet?
Oh, I wish I knew.
I wish I knew what the hell she was going on about
any of the time, to be honest.
Well, get ready for an afternoon of soul-crushing,
- excruciating small talk with the general public. - Mm.
- Here, look, you're on this. - Am I?
Yeah, but don't worry, you're with me.
- We'll just hand out leaflets all day. - OK.
Why didn't you tell us that Brother Lucas was thrown
out of his last monastery?
The Brothers are under my care, Detective.
I have to respect their rights.
No, you have to respect the law.
- What's with the secrets, Father? - There are no secrets.
Then why do I feel like you're blocking us?
Anything you can give us would be very helpful, Father.
Brother Lucas was
a deeply spiritual man touched by God.
What do you mean?
He had visions. Apparitions. Christ appeared to him.
Really?
He should never have been asked to leave.
So, what happened?
The Vatican found his claims egregious
and sent an investigation team who concluded he was a fake.
What, and so he was out?
It was decided he was best off elsewhere,
which was monumentally unfair.
When he had visions I...I saw him transform.
I never doubted him for a minute,
and invited him here to take refuge.
So, not the safe haven that you'd hoped?
No. He had troubles from the very start.
Three weeks ago,
an inverted pentagram was painted on Brother Lucas's cell door.
Wait, what? Why didn't you tell us that before?
I'd hoped to keep it within our community and not open us up to...
Scathing public opinion.
I've found people can be quick to cast dispersions.
- So, who did it? - I don't know.
And it's a mystery how anyone could have got into the monastery,
but someone clearly wanted
to let Brother Lucas know he wasn't safe in St John's.
- We need another chat with our charming monks. - Yeah.
I'm beginning to think this is an inside job.
Oh, yeah. I mean,
who else could have got close enough to paint a pentagram on his door?
He was quite a solitary soul, Brother Lucas.
All I can say is he was a very holy man.
An inspiration. I looked up to him.
He believed in the purity of the fast.
He hardly ate at mealtimes.
I saw him steal a whole plate of food from
the kitchen one night.
His greediness was sinful.
That man was no saint.
Pretenders are worse than infidels.
And should pretenders be punished?
They're on their way to hell either way.
Brother Lucas, he welcomed it. I saw it with my own eyes.
How do you mean?
This monastery harbours secrets.
But it was Brother Lucas who allowed Satan himself to enter.
OK. Thank you for your time.
Thank you.
Brother Swavek might not be the most reliable witness.
According to Father Colin, he's got dementia.
Mm. Still doesn't stop him doing God's work.
Mm. Now, my money's on Brother Matthew.
He clearly had it in for the victim.
The young lad's not off the hook.
He might have wanted to help Lucas become a martyr.
Well, that would fit with Brother Lucas wiping
the murder weapon clean himself.
- So, they're all suspects. - Mm.
- Ever heard of Ultio Dei? - Go on.
They're a fundamentalist group.
They've been trolling Brother Lucas for the last couple of years.
They're in the archives.
There's been a number of cases.
Art vandalism,
attacks on abortion clinics, that kind of thing.
Yeah. And some pretty punchy
comments in their online chat forums.
I've got cybercrimes to have a look at their IP addresses.
One of them's from St John's.
- May I? - Yeah. I'll just move this...blender.
- Why have you got a blender on your...? - Yeah, sorry.
Never mind.
Here, from Zephaniah,
"Brother Lucas is a con artist and a liar."
"His very existence is a danger to
"the Catholic faith."
Oh, tell us what you really mean, Zephaniah.
BELL TOLLS
So, monks are online, are they?
Many study theology this way,
and some just like the occasional treat from Waitrose.
Who logged on today at 10.51?
So, am I under arrest or...?
Not yet.
But it's not looking good, Zephaniah.
How long have you been a member of Ultio Dei?
I'm not a member. I just sympathise with their cause.
Were you involved in Brother Lucas's death?
No. Of course not.
So, what, you were just trolling him, were you?
You don't know anything about the pentagram
on Brother Lucas's door?
It was just...a warning.
And the whipping?
Just a warning too?
I just let them in. That's all I did.
Who did you let in?
Ultio Dei.
A few of them came and demanded to see him.
I didn't know they were going to go that far. I swear.
Son, why would you help these people?
Father, I believed he'd fallen.
At first, I adored him, you know this.
I truly thought him to be chosen, but...
..he made a mockery of his faith and of us.
Mockery.
How?
Sometimes I followed him.
He met with a woman.
They seemed close.
He was lying to all of us.
Patience, hi. I wanted to tell you in person,
I have the most brilliant news.
It's an amazing opportunity for you
and your community at the Viking Festival.
Your clip did so brilliantly,
and you're obviously such an asset to
the City of York Police,
so I booked you a little slot on the stage.
Ah, why?
Well, I thought you could get up and literally say,
like, a few words about your journey.
- The number five? - What?
Well, I'll be getting the number five bus there.
No, I mean, sorry,
experience navigating personal challenges,
working alongside the police force.
No, sorry. I don't think that...
No, I'll stick something down for you.
You'll be brilliant. Seriously.
I have total faith, honest. See you Sunday.
Y...
Er...
- PHONE RINGS - Baxter.
Sir, we're heading to the address Brother Joe gave us.
What, the troll monk?
I've been talking to cybercrimes about him.
We checked the address against the electoral role.
Turns out one of the tenants was a Katie Morgan.
Katie. Brother Lucas's friend.
Yeah, we're hoping so.
- Good. Keep me posted. - Will do, sir.
Before you go. Callum Banks,
he was your reporting officer in Manchester, right?
Erm, yeah. Anything else?
No, no, no. That's all.
Everything all right?
- Yeah, yeah. - All right.
I don't know. I've not seen her for a few days.
I'm... I'm worried, actually.
So, that's unusual?
Well...
She's had some issues with drugs,
so sometimes she doesn't come home.
But she's never disappeared for this long.
So, you think she's on a bender?
Maybe.
And you work with her?
At the hospital.
Are they aware of her problem?
She's been getting away with it,
but recently they've started to notice.
Has she ever mentioned anyone called Lucas Drummond?
No. Oh, I mean, she has an ex called Lucas,
but that's Lucas Haynes, I think.
And, actually, he turned up here
a couple of weeks ago looking for her.
What did he want?
I don't know. She wasn't happy to see him.
They had a massive row.
He seemed like, I don't know, bad news.
OK, well, thank you. Thanks for all your time.
Please, will you let me know if you hear anything?
Yeah, sure.
JAKE GRUNTS
- All right, Mr Universe. - Oh. - HE CHUCKLES
You...you wouldn't be saying that if you saw me
with my shirt off.
Oh, I... I don't... I wasn't... I'm sorry, I wasn't...
Anyway, Katie Morgan's flatmate was right.
Lucas Haynes changed his name in 2010,
right before he joined the monastery in South...
South Uist. Yeah.
Anyway, I've got Patience on it.
Cool. Oh, I opened a missing persons case on Katie Morgan.
Good idea. All right, then, get back to it. Chop chop.
- HE CHUCKLES - All right.
So, Lucas Haynes turned up in the files.
March 16th 2005,
he was involved in an altercation at a bar.
Then he turned up a year later in a violent dispute
with a cab driver.
- Ah. So Brother Lucas had a violent streak. - Mm.
It's not looking good for Katie Morgan.
It's home-made sriracha. It's Thai.
OK.
Yeah, you've got to enjoy your food.
It's like sex, it should stimulate all your senses.
Here. Careful though, it's got kick.
No, thank you. I've got everything I need here.
Believe me, it is life-changing.
What is that?
It's a pomegranate salad.
Yeah, just try it.
Er, I...
I thought you based everything on evidence.
How do you know you won't love it?
Fair enough.
That is quite nice, actually.
Ah.
Can I?
No, no, no, no. That's... That's all you're getting.
It's nearly finished.
- Hi. - Hi. Two plates of food, you must be really hungry.
Oh, no, actually, half of this is for Will.
Mm. Well, you know, greed is a deadly sin.
I think I know where Katie Morgan is.
His greediness was sinful.
That man was no saint.
I don't get it. I was certain she'd be here somewhere.
- Yeah, me too. - What makes you so sure?
Brother Lucas was seen stealing food. We believed it was for Katie.
No, no, no. I would've noticed something like that
happening right under my nose.
I'm sorry, I just don't know how it would be possible.
Brother Swavek. Brother Swavek.
Er, you remember DI Monroe.
Do you recognise this woman?
- The serpent. - What do you mean?
Brother Lucas brought her here
to poison us.
To drag us all to hell.
Father Colin?
It says there's a granary here.
Er, yes. Yes, there used to be.
It got bombed during the war. It's all a part of the library now.
I need to see it.
You can go straight through to the kitchen.
Nobody ever really goes up there any more.
The bookcase has been moved.
I don't think so. It's just a bookcase.
There's something unusual about this.
What is it?
No, this is the way in.
DOOR UNLOCKS
Wait here.
Jake.
Hello?
Hello?
There's a key.
Oh, Christ.
Katie Morgan.
I can't believe he's dead.
When he didn't come back...
SHE SNIFFLES
..I tried to leave, but he...
..he'd locked me in.
He was gone for days, no-one could hear me calling.
The bookcase would've made it soundproof.
That must have been terrifying.
Why was he holding you hostage?
Hostage?
No,
Lucas was helping me to...
I needed to dry out.
Drugs.
I had to get out my flat. It was dangerous.
My flatmate, she was...
She was my dealer. She...
She's very...
..manipulative.
She had absolutely no interest in getting me clean.
Do you mean Joanne?
Yeah.
So, what exactly was your relationship with Brother Lucas?
Friends...
..these days, since he found God.
But...
..I met him in A&E, he came in one night,
he'd been in a fight. He was a mess but...
..I don't know, he seemed more broken on the inside.
You wanted to help him.
Yeah.
And then we fell in love.
In spite of his demons, he had a good heart.
But he never hurt you.
No. God, no. No, he had a temper, sure.
But never with me. He only ever tried to protect me.
- And then he vanished. - Yeah, for 15 years.
And then he turns up out of the blue a few weeks ago.
I was shocked but he was, well,
he was still the man I fell in love with.
It's cheesy, I know, but...
..he had the other half.
Sorry, Miss Morgan,
Brother Lucas, was he your soulmate?
The one, or...?
I guess so.
Even though that he broke your heart?
He was still my person.
Well, if you're meant to be with him, then tell him.
I think it's a two-way street. He should tell her.
Well, I think you should play the field.
That's what I do. I don't like to pin myself down.
Yeah. I mean, I think that's... That's all goods suggestions, guys.
Although I do like to be pinned down, I've recently discovered.
Cool. I think Alex is right.
If you think that he's the one that got away,
then...you should tell him.
How?
Well, what do you want to say to him?
Er...
I think, well...
Well, just that timetables don't matter
and I don't care that we're not the same.
I think it makes it more interesting.
Or that, well, I like that he likes my pets.
Or that he can't keep a cactus alive.
- LAUGHTER - And...
Well, that he's still my person and I want to be with him.
But what would I say?
That. That.
SIREN WAILS
- Get your hands off! Ow, ow! - Look, Joanne, calm down.
Don't escalate this.
PHONE RINGS
- Well? - Yeah, we got her.
It looks like she's been dealing to more clients than just Katie, too.
Don't think she'll be coming home any time soon.
Well, good, good. Oh! God.
Boss, you OK? What's happened?
No!
What's happening? Do you need me to come round?
No, I just... I oversalted the sriracha. It's...
SHE SIGHS
So, you've hit a dead end with Lucas Haynes?
Yes, but I have found something on Katie Morgan.
- Oh, yeah? - Yeah, a case. So, she's registered as an A&E nurse,
so I was able to narrow down my searches.
So, 2009,
a doctor at the hospital she worked at,
Robert Hargrove, was attacked.
He died from his injuries
and they didn't find the perpetrator.
Right. What's this got to do with Katie Morgan?
So, she was listed as a witness.
She claimed not to have seen anything,
but this was in the clenched fist of
the victim like he tried to grab it off his attacker.
Is that the other half of Katie Morgan's necklace?
Well, it looks like it. I mean,
it doesn't mention Lucas Haynes, but given the evidence,
I think he's guilty of the murder of Robert Hargrove.
Yeah, hey, I think we need to speak to Katie Morgan again.
Look, we know that Lucas attacked Robert Hargrove
and that you were a witness.
We went through this years ago. I didn't see anything.
Obstruction of justice, Miss Morgan, is a crime.
Lucas is dead, Katie.
Don't you want to help us find his killer?
That's all we're trying to do here.
OK. It's...
It's just hard to...
Take your time.
Robert Hargrove,
everyone knew he could be handsy and inappropriate.
One night, it was late, I was...
..waiting for Lucas.
Hargrove started in on me like he was flirting with me,
trying to grab me, but...
..like it was a joke,
but it wasn't.
- And I tried to laugh it off. - It's OK.
But then he...
..he pushed me against the wall
and he forced himself on me.
But then Lucas turned up before he could do anything.
And...yeah, he lost it.
Lost it?
He didn't mean to kill him.
He was just trying to stop him from hurting me.
So, maybe Brother Lucas was murdered as revenge
for killing Hargrove all those years ago. It's a surprise twist.
Well, 20% of the homicides in the UK are motivated by revenge,
so it's not necessarily a surprise to me, DCI Baxter.
On the other hand, he didn't seem like a very popular individual.
I'm not sure how many people would want to avenge him.
You found a younger brother, didn't you?
Yeah, Leo Hargrove. 28-year-old with a chequered past.
A few stints inside for petty stuff.
Seems to have fallen in with the wrong crowd.
Looks like a troubled soul.
- Isn't that...? - That's the delivery guy.
Yeah.
Hey, you.
Can we talk to you for a minute, please, mate?
City of York Police.
Oi, stop!
I said stop!
Ugh...
Argh! Ugh!
Oh, he's locked himself in.
And he won't be in there alone.
No. The vespers.
What do we do?
Erm, the architectural plans.
So, er, yes...
There's a crypt underneath the church.
- It could lead to another entrance. - All right.
Erm...
Er...
Which way?
Over there?
Er... OK, no,
our access point should be a lot further down there.
That must lead to the sacristy,
but I'm not sure it's possible to get into the church like that.
I'll go and check it out. You guys stay with Patience.
All right. Come on.
You harboured my brother's murderer. You're all in on it, weren't you?
Leo? Leo, Leo, Leo, Leo. Look, look, look, it's OK, it's OK.
It's OK. It's OK, look, Leo.
Please, Leo, we are... We are here to help.
Ha! Help me? Yeah, where were you years ago when I...
..when I begged you to find my brother's murderer, eh?
I was just a kid.
And when he died...
..everything went to hell.
An eye for an eye. Isn't that right, Father?
Look, you were hit hard by your brother's death, Leo,
and that is completely understandable.
But if you kill 12 innocent...
Yeah, but they're not innocent, though, are they?
They let a man get away with murder.
Oh, my son, Brother Lucas didn't get away with anything.
Atonement became his life's work.
Our demons,
they join us here at the monastery.
We must answer to them and to ourselves.
LEO SOBS
Don't move! Don't move!
Do you want to know what he said to me when I stabbed him?
SPIKE PIERCES
"Will you forgive me?"
Then he wiped the spike clean of my prints.
Where was his anger? Hey?
Leo? Leo, look at me, mate.
I'm sorry.
You do not have to do this. Look at me, Leo. Look at me.
LEO PANTS
Get off me! Get off me!
Hello, cheers.
Hi.
- Hello, City of York Police. - City of York Police.
City of York Police, thank you.
City of York Police, thank you.
City of York Police, thank you.
Hey.
Hi.
Erm...
Patience? It's time for your slot on stage.
- What? - You ready? - No. What? Sorry, no, I don't think that I'm...
- Oh, don't worry. - Erm... - I've got a little speech prepared for you.
- Come on. - Er...
- You can do it. - Well, what...?
Ladies and gentlemen, Patience Evans!
CHEERING
Erm...
Sorry, erm...
Er... My name is Patience Evans.
I...
Give us a song!
LAUGHTER
I work in the Criminal Records Department of
the City of York Police and...
..erm, I...
Er...
I'm autistic.
- The... - Poor girl. I can't watch.
Erm...
Shh.
Er...
My name is DCI Calvin Baxter
and I'm the Chief of the City of York Police.
- So, Patience, well... - It's OK.
- You sure? - Yeah.
SHE CLEARS THROAT
All my life I've preferred to be on my own,
ever since I was small.
I never thought that I'd be able to be part of a team.
But it turns out that all I needed was the right team.
Working alongside the City of York Police
has been one of the most incredible experiences
of my life.
They work so hard to keep our streets safe.
Well, I mean, most of them are single
because they can't maintain a work-life balance.
Doesn't matter. Erm...
They're brave, honest,
and kind people.
And I'm so proud to have them on my side
and I think you should too.
Thank you.
CHEERING
She was really good, really good. There she is. Genuinely.
- Without preparing it as well, well done. - Thank you. - Yeah.
Monroe, you need to get back to the office as soon as possible.
- Why? - Situation in the Hebrides, one of the islands.
Oh, what's it called again?
Oh, yeah. What was the name of that place?
South something?
O...ooost?
- O-oost? - Oo-ooost?
- Very funny. - Monroe, what are we gonna do with you?
