Once the rich and famous family...

with the generations' wealth

It fell apart by the descendants' unfiliality

And by the influence of the feudal system

... that lasts several milleniums

Finally torn to pieces only to leave behind...

the vermilion gate dream regrettably left unfinished

All right...please...

Please come in

Good...hurry up...

First Madam

What?

The second Madam's family sent over the gifts

Yung Lan

I'm here

What should I do?

Go and get the second Madam

First Madam

There is someone sending the gifts

I'm coming

Have you seen the second Madam?

No

No, I didn't

Second Madam

Did you see Second Madam?

No

Second Madam, Second Madam

Have you seen the Second Madam?

No

Did you see Second Madam?

I didn't

Second Madam

Who is this?

Second Madam

Second Madam

She is coming up

You have to go

How ?

Jump over the window

Hurry up! Hurry!

Second Madam

Second Madam

What are you screaming about?

Your family sent over the gifts

The first Madam asked for you

I got it

Oh, by the way

Find me the book of Chaste

I've been looking all over this morning

I couldn't find it

Yes

Why're the gifts here so early ?

I wonder what has been sent !

Hope that it's something good

Cousin, what a coincidence !

I just came back from the store

I'm on the way to give Uncle's birthday greeting

Oh, yes

Then we can go together

Thank you

There are two red packets for you

Please go to have some snacks

Thank you, first Madam

Wait! Wait for a minute! Take it slow

Let me look at it

Gee! You're so stingy

There is one dollar only in the red envelope

How can you do that?

My family will lose face

Chuen Mei

I'm here

Yes, Second Madam

Give them ten dollars more

You may leave

Thank you

I mean, honestly !

Hello

Why did mom send over so much ?

Have all the gifts arrived?

Yes, Master Cousin

Great!

Since my eldest cousin got sick

I'm taking care of everything

I just want to make sure everything is all right

First Madam

Hurry!

I'm coming

Why are you so nervous?

Come with me

First Madam, what's wrong?

Why the difference amongst messengers ?

Why do our servants...

just get one dollar ?

But Second Madam's servants got ten dollars

...and got all the special treatments

Isn't it because my family is poor...

so our servants got mistreated ?

Third Madam, please don't misunderstand

In all the red packets there was a dollar

Oh! Third Madam

One chicken and two bottles of wine

And you think a dollar's red packet is worth that

I don't know what's wrong with my mom

She prepared so many gold items for me

There are rings and others

My neck can't bear all that burden

It'd make my hands sore, too

What did you get? Nothing

First Madam

It's hard to be rich

Hey, did you hear...

You...

You gambled whenever you got money

You've never bought any jades

... or jewelry for me

Now see it yourself

She has said it all

How embarrassing !

I might just as well kill myself

Third Madam...

The Old Master is coming

Is it true ?

No, I was saying

If you let him see you're crying...

He will be very unhappy

To hell with you !

My tears are like an electric switch

I can stop crying anytime

Yung Lan, Ah Hong is here

What's wrong? Hong, are you leaving today?

Yes, my friend wrote me a letter

Asked me to take today's ferry for a job in the city

Ah Hong

You're incharge of dynamites at the mine

It's very dangerous

You should find another job instead

Yung Lan

Without hard work one can't earn a fortune

Don't think too much

I'll be back when I get the money

Yung Lan, go out quickly

The old Master is in the hall

Chen Chong, be good! Come down

I don't want to get down

Hurry up! Hurry!

Let him play! He's all right

Come to sit with grandpa

All right

You're naughty

Where is second brother ?

He couldn't get out of bed today

I'll go and get him to greet old Master

Chun Mei

Yes, Second Madam

Go to get the second young master

Yes

Second young master

Your father is in the hall

Your wife wants you to offer birthday respects

I know

What's wrong with you?

Nothing

I feel a little bit dizzy

You don't need to go out if you're not well

I have to give my father birthday greetings

Long live, Old Master. Congratulations

Shu Jen, give them the red envelopes

Please give all of them for me

Yes

Thank you! Old Master

How do you feel? Big brother

I am alright

We're going to give Old Master birthday greetings

Congratulations, Old Master. Long live...

Gi Fang

Uncle

From now on

You'll manage all the finances

Gee, Old Master, you can't do that

You should trust your own son...

instead of him

What? My son?

He is nothing but a playboy

He owes people money and steals antiques

If he is made incharge...

All of the Yang's assets won't last...

more than an half a month

Old Master, the fourth young master is home

You're back ?

Eldest sister-in-law, I would be back earlier...

if it wasn't for the examination

Well, well ... No more talking

Yung Lan, let him offer the incense

Yes, sir

I almost forgot

My friend is coming home with me

Bo Wen

This is my father

Uncle

This is my eldest sister-in-law

Hello

Are you from somewhere near?

No, he wants to visit a friend in town

So I invited him to stay with us

Bo Wen

How is the room ?

It's wonderful

Take a look

Oh, dad

I heard that Chen Chong hasn't started his school

He is still small

I worried about him if he studies away from home

I brought Bo Wen back this time

On one hand, he has no place to stay

Also, I want him to be...

the teacher of Chen Chong

Fine, then...

Chen Chong doesn't need to leave home

What do you think? Bo Wen

I was planning to stay anyway

If Old Master doesn't mind my qualification

I'll take it as an order

You're too kind

Come to see your teacher! Chen Chong

Good boy! Say hello to your teacher

Teacher

It's okay

Yung Lan

Do you still remember long time ago...

I was teaching you in the pavilion

Of course

I still remember

Ah Hong and us were playing beside the lake

You were the groom and I the bride that time

Ah Hong being the drummer

Time really flies

It feels just like yesterday

It has been a long time

You weren't the fourth young Master then

All of us were the same

But we've grown up now

Our identities have changed

No, I didn't

All these years I've always missed...

that little girl with two pony tails

Did you ever think...

why do I still have two pony tails?

I'm not like those ladies

Put my hair up

Because I'm still a servant

But I never treat you...

as a servant

Fourth Master, I heard that you studied in the city

There is a rich girl who really likes you

But you...

How can it be possible?

She is from a rich and famous family

I'm just an ordinary student

There is a big difference between us

Finally, you realized it

Fourth young Master, it's different than before

You should take a rest. It's getting late

See you tomorrow

Among us, is there really a distance?

All right. We've checked everywhere

You can go to sleep

Yes

You haven't slept. It's very late

No, I went to check around

By the way, you agreed to stay

And you'll teach Chen Chong

I have to stay here to look for a person

That person had promised...

to wait for me

I'll wait for your return

Shu Jen, this time I go to school in the city

My family can't support me so I have to work

When will I be back? I really can't tell you

Why don't you come with me?

No, If I elope with you...

it'd be against the morals

I can't face the society in the future

Don't worry! Bo Wen

Whenever you come back,

I'll wait for you. I will

Now I am back

It's a pity that everything has changed

After you left, the Yang family came up...

with marriage proposal. And my parents promised

I came to be the wife of their eldest young master

But... Please don't blame me

Strangely enough, only the patriarch set for women

... by your men folk since milleniums is at fault

That of 3 obediences & 4 feminine virtues

In fact, I hated you before

Now I figured it out. It's not a big deal

I'm back now

And wish to repeat the same thing of 8 years back

Shu Jen, please go with me

Are you kidding?

Even when I was a girl eight years ago...

I couldn't go with you

I'm a widow now

Do you think I can go with you?

The times sure are different now

Don't indulge in flights of fancy

A woman can only wed one husband

The sages and virtuous men have told us

I did let you down. Bo Wen

But if you love me...

You should take care of yourself

Deep in my heart

You'll be there forever

Shu Jen

Enough! I'm done talking

I remain the wife of eldest Yang son

And you are the teacher. See you

Shu Jen

I'll keep on waiting

Why?

Right now

The fourth young master is back

You have to find some way to handle him

Why ?

Oh, why ?

Finally the eldest young master died

You have the chance to take care of the business

The fourth young master is home now

The old guy certainly will rely on his own son

Here are the Yang family accounts

You're back now

You should take care of this family for me

Your eldest brother died

The second one is a loser and the third is useless

I only got you

Dad, I want to get out of here

The country needs us now

Nonsense! You should take care of your family first

Ancient proverbs say: Govern the nation

It starts from governing your family first

The second sister-in-law and my cousin

They are doing fine job

Still, he's not from our family

He works for me because there is no one else

Also, he has good relationship with the government

It's pretty useful

Now you're back

Our family can take care of the business

Damn old folk

The last name is different after all

Damn the Yang's!

Let me tell you, cousin

You finally realized ;

You won't get any goodies...

if the fourth young master takes over

It's so disgusting

Go

Hi, cousin master, you have to be careful

Did I goof up?

This is cousin master or the second young master ?

Oh, it's cousin master

Well, cousin master and the second Madam

Whose skirt is it?

It belongs to the Second Madam

Are you afraid of cold?

This is my problem

A lot of things that I shouldn't see...

but I saw them anyway

Cousin Master, please tell me

Whether I should tell the Old Master or not ?

Third Madam, please don't

What ? Don't tell him

It'll be tough. Of late I haven't been able to lie

This is a nice gold necklace

It's really pretty

I heard my mother said...

you can lie as long as

you wear the gold necklace

I also heard my mother said...

With the gold bracelet and ring

You can lie even better

All right! You just take them

You make sure that you can lie

I knew how to handle it

Button it up quickly

If anyone sees it...

they will think that we're partners

Second Madam

You should walk around when you are free

It's good for you

Look at my gold jewelry

Yes, I should walk around more

Oh, cousin master

I almost forgot

I have something to ask you

What is it ?

I heard my husband...

is living with an actress outside the home

Is it true?

I'm telling you

It's better to tell me the truth

Otherwise,

I'll have to report to the Old Master

Cousin

Why don't you just tell her clearly ?

It's like that

He and that girl are going to have a baby

What ? Old Master...

Second Madam...

What happened?...

Go away! I want to die

Can anyone tell what's wrong?

I don't know either. She...

It's like this

The third young Master is living with an actress

He wants to bring her home

If that bitch comes

What should I do?

Second Madam...

Quiet

Zhe Huei

Our family is literary for generations

We can't marry an actress

Dad, It's not for my sake to get a concubine

It's for our family

Bullshit

You think about it. Three of our brothers

Chen Chong is the only grandson

Yun Shia didn't have any descendant

My fat ass wife can't lay an egg

Stop crying!

If the youngest brother can't have a son

In the future, when you die...

Who will attend your funeral?

The one I live with, she is pregnant

Maybe she will have a son right away

Then you'll have one more grandson

I'm going to kill you...

Stop

It's your fault that you can't have a son for him

She is doing you a favor

In future you can get your good share in my will

Isn't it good for you ?

Shu Jen

Old Master

Find a match-maker tomorrow...

and bring back that woman

Lady, please come out

Put on the new shoes

Come in the door

Coming...

Pick it up! Go on

Madam, our lady is ready to enter the door

Wait a second! Wait!

Hurry up! Third Madam

Where are the pants?

Take out Third Madam's pants quickly

Where is the chair?

Hurry up! Bring the chair

Come on quickly

You have to stand tall when she comes in

Move in a little bit more

Come on! You can come in

Go...

This way. It has to be under the pants

Light the fire

Second lady, the incense is ready

You can offer the incense to the ancestors

Come

Old master, our lady is offering the tea

Thank you for the red envelope

Madam, our lady is offering the tea

Please drink some tea

Drink

No way

Third Madam

Red envelope

I know

Our lady wants to thank for Madam's envelope

Madam, give our lady a new name

By her sad look just call her "Dried bitter melon"

Our lady thanks for...

the Madam's new name

Four...

Congratulations, Third young Master

It's a boy

I'll get one more share of the family property

What should I spend it on?

Third Madam, congratulations! You got a boy

Stop pissing me off, huh?

Old Master! Old Master

Miss Ya Tong wrote you a letter

What ? Is she back?

You have to move out tomorrow

Clean it up for your cousin

She grew up in this room

When is she coming back?

She said she's back for the azalea's blossom

Cousin

Eldest cousin-in-law

How have you been? It has been six years

Zhe Siang

Dad

Go over to say hi to your cousin

Yes

Cousin

Second cousin

It's very hot here

What are you still doing here?

Let's go in, cousin

Hurry up!

Yung Lan

Bring Miss cousin's suitcase in

I'll help you

Thank you

Miss, what's your name ?

I'm Chew Liang

This is it

Second Madam

Why don't you join in?

Enough for me

This is a beautiful house

You can stay here

Come

Take it in

All the suitcases

Ya Tong, are you tired ?

A little

You take a rest first

We'll talk during dinner time

Let her rest. All of you can leave

Come on! Hurry!

Miss Cousin, see you tonight

Yes

Cousin

I knew your favorite dish

I've asked the kitchen to prepare

All right! Let her take a rest

Go...

See you later

Why are you still here?

How are you? It has been 6 years

I couldn't believe the fortune teller

He used three coins to decide our destiny

I can never forgive him

Why did we let a stranger...

to decide our future ?

Maybe they were right

I lost my husband

His family went bankrupt

I have nothing

Ya Tong

Don't do that

It's totally different now

Do you hate me?

No, both of us got married

Who has the right to hate?

I can still remember...

we wore the white clothes

Running around on the bridge

You said that white is your favorite color

That's the reason you wear white today

You also said that you love purple azaleas

I planted a purple azalea...

right here in the garden

For these five years, it keeps me company

Are you lonely?

How about you?

Do you still remember that poem:

The butterfly's love ?

Who dares to say I've forgotten ?

I still feel regret when spring arrives

You're back now. It'll be better

What does it mean?

It's getting late! Miss, it's bed time

I should leave

See you tomorrow

Fourth young Master...

Fourth young Master...

You're finally back

What's wrong?

Since your eldest brother died...

Mr. Shong is in charge of everything

The rent is doubled

How can we afford it ?

Yes, Fourth young Master

You're very reasonable

Would you please mention it to your father?

Please help us

Yes...

All right! I'll talk to my dad

What happened?

You lost your mind, higher the rent is...

We'll have more money

Dad, if you so insist

You have to think whether they can afford it

Yes...

What ?

Don't rent it if you can't afford it

You're having fun everyday

You don't know how hard they have to work

Why don't you try one day on the field ?

You'll know every penny...

they earn doesn't come that easily

Yes, Fourth young Master is right

Dad, we have enough money

Why don't you give them a break ?

We don't want them...

to curse for generations

Are you accusing me to screw up your family?

Uncle, I quit my job then

From tomorrow

I'll give you back the accounts

You have to forgive him

Zhe Yin, I pay for your tuition

I wanted you to learn more

You can earn more money in the future

Like our ancestors

You can be a government officer

I can't believe that you're helping outsiders

The times are different now

I don't care how different is the time

I just know that we're the Yang family

I want to make sure everyone in our family

They can live comfortably for generations

Did you think for those sharecroppers?

Shut up

We have our own rules

No one is going to change it if I am here

I should have left long ago

This house needs to change

This family also has to change

A single matter hasn't been right here

One day sooner or later...

I'll change everything here

Fourth young Master, what's the matter ?

Nothing, I'm leaving

They can swindle others

Let them hold on to the house which is falling apart

In their opinion...

They only think for their descendants

They are selfish, feudal and stubborn

I'm leaving! I have to go...

What will you do then?

I'm going to join the students' movement

I'll change the old system

Until it's completely different

You get away this time

Given the same circumstances in future...

Will you take off again?

Although I never studied in school

I still can tell right and wrong

The 2nd master is coward and the third is useless

The First Madam is a woman

If you leave...

Your cousin will take over everything

At that time,

there wouldn't be anyone to see justice is served

My dad, he...

The Old Master is a nice person

He just listens to others

I don't know what should I say

I'll never leave if I was you

Think about it

You can't even change your own family

What can you do in the outside world?

You're right, I can't handle my own family

What else can I do out there?

Yung Lan

What ? Chang

Ah Hong is back

Did he come over? Chang

Hong, you're back

Yung Lan

Come

Yung Lan, I've worked very hard

I've saved over two hundred

You take it first

I'll make one hundred more

And you'll be free

Then we can get married

Hong

Third young Master...

Put the money away. Don't lose it

This is what I've saved for our wedding

I know

Human beings can be very strange

Sometimes you love her but she doesn't love you

Other times she loves you but you don't love her

It's also said there's distance between people

What the young Masters and what the servants !

Aren't young Masters human beings ?

Who said that?

It's the servants who aren't human

Why?

Ever since thousands of years

We men set the rules

The moral sense and the ethical education

It's all in the past

But, behind this red door...

They live with the old standard

Yes

Did you find the one you were looking for ?

I found half of her

What ? Half ?

Yes, only half

People in this house are really strange

Even the love is only half

You, me and my second brother

Cousin

Second cousin

What are you writing?

Nothing, I...

Wait! Let me take a look

No

I haven't received any letter from you for 6 years

It's a long time since I read your writing

The plum blossom in the cold weather

A couple of pieces fell on the ground

Year after year the flowers still blossom

The spring comes and goes

All the worries like the stars in the sky

The regret is the river never end

No one can mend a broken heart

Let the moon suffer in loneliness

Ya Tong

Don't be sad

I'll stay with you forever

No, there is one thing I have to tell you

Please don't stop here anymore

Why?

There is no reason

We have to think for your wife

But there is no love between us

You're her husband

This is the destiny

The people in love are in separation

They can't be together

But those not in love have to stay together

... which is called a couple

Second cousin

Don't mention the past; Don't think about the future

I came back this time

It's only for a short time

Pretty soon...

Maybe I'll take off again

No, Ya Tong. Please don't go

You can't leave me

I won't be totally willing...

if I have to leave one day

Are you sure ?

I'm sure. She said it's your sister

Are you kidding? My sister

Is she tall or short? Is she fat or skinny?

Why are you looking all over for me?

Where is she?

Third Madam

First Madam

There is a girl looking for you outside

She said that she is your sister

Really?

Sister

Are you still going to embarrass me?

You fell on your face...

in front of everybody

Take it out

You're twenty something

You can't even cross over the doorsill

It's not my fault

Our house is so much smaller than yours

There is no doorsill

I've never crossed over it before

Oh yes

You did mention everyone in the house was dead ?

Yes, our auntie too died last month

That's why...

I came over here

What a terrible luck befell our family !

Entire family dead and we were broke

All right! You can stay here

Are you sure ?

Who should I sleep with?

With me

Oh

Why?

Then where is your husband going to sleep ?

He lost his mind

He fell in love with a bitch

I heard you've 200 in secret savings

Give it to me

Please don't be so loud, Third young Master

Chen Jia is sick and he just fell asleep

I can keep silent if you give me the money

Please don't ! Third young Master

I've kept it for taking care of my mom's ashes

C'mon break it off, don't go gambling

I don't care

I need to go to gamble

Maybe I'll win lots of money. Hurry!

No, third young Master

I'll never give you the money

Are you giving me or not ?

No, third young Master. No

I beg you! Please don't

Sister...

Third young Master. Please!

I can't give you the money

No, third young Master

I'll kill him if you don't give me the money

First Madam...

What happened? Chew Liang

Third young Master is beating his second wife

Where is the First Madam?

She went to the doctor

What should we do ? Sister...

I'll give your son back if you pay me

Hurry up! Give me the money

Come on

You should've given me earlier, bitch

Take it easy! Third young Master

Shut your big mouth!

Hey, do you know how to be a nice person?

You gave my husband money to gamble

Are you trying to spoil him...

or harm me in some way

Sister, could you be mistaken ?

She was forced to give him the money

Shut up !

I'm warning you

He is a good husband

If he gets some bad habits

You'll be responsible for it

Grand Master

Grand Master

Come here! Hurry! Be careful!

Leave me alone

You scared me to death

First Madam

No, don't get close

First Madam, hurry

You come back

No, stay away from me

What's going on?

You don't listen to what I said

You'll get killed if you fall down. You...

Stop. Why did you hit him?

Grandpa

He was playing on the fence

Then you hit him, huh ?

Couldn't you have explained to him ?

Yes

Chang

Master

Chen Chong will move to my room

I'll never let anyone hurt him

Pick him up in my room when he needs to study

Grandpa, I've been working so hard these few days

Can I skip tomorrow?

Yes, you can take a rest

Chang

What ? Chen Chong can't make to the classes again

Yes, our master said that he is sick

Did your old master know...

Chen Chong doesn't like to study at all ?

He knew it

Chen Chong is spoiled since he was very little

Shouldn't his mother ought to do something then ?

For the sake of this matter...

first Madam even got sick over it

Who is it?

How come you're here ?

I heard that you are sick

Please come in

Do you know Chen Chong skipped the classes ?

Shu Jen, I wonder why you avoid me so ?

I've told you

I'm the first Madam in this family

You're the teacher and I'm afraid of the gossips

We shouldn't see each other

But there is someone in your heart

It's only inside my heart

Don't you feel the pain?

Tell me, did you have any feeling?

How could you be so brave and leave ?

Let's go back to the river

And the old tree

Shu Jen, I'll wait for you

No, Bo Wen. Don't wait for me anymore

The past year...

You shouldn't be here

For your future

You better leave this place

Shu Jen

Enough

Don't hate me! Bo Wen

Don't wait for me either

Call me when you are done

You are absolutely ridiculous !

I'm fine

Are you sure?

It's a serious matter

Do you know that the first Madam is sick?

Guess who is taking over?

Who?

Dried bitter melon

Because she has a grandson for the old fart

Pretty soon, we won't have a place here

Master Cousin

You have to help me

What should I do ?

Dried bitter melon thought that she has terrible luck

... on the fifteenth of every month

She'll go to the temple to worship

From here to the temple

She has to cross over the bridge on the river

You can hide around the bridge

When she walks to the middle of the bridge

You can follow her from behind

Give her a push

Water is quite deep there and she will be drowned

The third Madam is really nasty

Have I done a lot of terrible things ?

I'm a little afraid

Merciful Buddha!

You start chanting so early

Guess it'd be even better over at the temple

It's me

We're going to the temple

We need to look decent

Look, with this hairdo & a matching skirt

It all makes you look so lovely

Yue Cin, when I just arrived...

My sister told me that you were very nasty

However now it does seem like...

They are the bad ones

Don't be silly!

It could be my poor destiny

After I went to worship the gods

Maybe I'll have better luck

Second Mistress

What's wrong?

Chen Xiau is a little hot

What should we do?

I can't go to the temple then

It's all right. I'll go to the temple for you

What's wrong with you?

Did you look before you push?

How would I know it was you!

I came to help you

There is someone

This time push harder; Here she comes

Third Madam, what happened?

What ?

Catching fishes in the pond

No

Can you shut up?

No one will think that you're mute

Sister-in-law

The doctor is here

Doctor, this way

Yung Lan, why are they so nervous ?

Miss Cousin just vomited blood

How is she?

Can we go outside?

Doctor Chew, what's wrong with my cousin?

It's very serious tuberculosis

Should we take her to the hospital?

So far

There isn't any medicine that can cure this disease

It's time to take the medicine, Cousin

I don't want to take it

You have to follow the doctor's instructions

You'll be fine after you take the medicine

Really?

I've told you

I'm just passing by here

Maybe in the very near future

I'll leave again

In fact, I knew it long time ago

I won't get healed

I just want to see you before I die

No, Ya Tong

No, you will not and you can not

Second cousin, you have to promise me

One day if I were to die...

You should lead your life bravely

No matter where you are;

You'll find the happiness for yourself

Ya Tong, are you alright ?

It's a lot of blood !

Hong, Hong

Please don't go...Ah Hong

You can't go. Hong

What happened?

Master Yang, please help me to check one thing

Who are you?

He is Yung Lan's friend

Let's go outside

Ah Hong, you lost money ?

I gave Yung Lan 200 dollars to buy her freedom

It's gone now

Where did you lose it ?

Right here

Perhaps someone in your family would be behind it

Shut up!

How dare you !

You hit me! You dare to hit me ?

So what ?

Ours is an affluent literary family

Who would take your few hundred dollars?

You...

You should get out of here if you are smart

Otherwise, I'll call the police to arrest you

... and put you in the jail

Hong

Please calm down! Ah Hong

It was my fault

You could blame me for it

Let's go outside to talk

Yung Lang

You never know how hard I worked to earn it !

Dad

I think that we should check it up

No way

The poor guy lost such little money

And he dares to search my house

Uncle, don't need to waste your energy

I'll go to the police

Tell them to take him

Shong Gi Fang, why are you doing this ?

It's like our family exploits the weaker

Shut up!

If you don't stop, I'll kick you out too

Dad...

All right! Fourth young Master

Let's talk outside

That's the education you got in the city

Forget about it ! Hong, don't be mad!

Let's work two more years

Why should the poor...

on the contrary be bullied ?

Stole my money and dared to call the police

Yung Lan, there is some money

All of us get it together

No, uncle Chen

Yung Lan

There are twenty dollars

You can take it

Second Mistress, this...

No, I'll talk to my dad

Please don't! Fourth young Master

The Old Master is very mad right now

He will not listen to you

Yung Lan, why don't we do this;

I'll give you 300 dollars. You can buy the freedom

No, all of you

I'm grateful that you're willing to help us

But I'll find out the truth

I'll prove to the Old Master

Even the educated could be the bad guys

The rich will steal too

Fong Mei

This is all I have. It's most difficult...

to forestall a thief within the house

You have to find a safe place to hide it

Don't tell me the location!

Why?

You don't know my husband

I'm afraid that he'll take it to gamble

Once he starts hitting me I blurt it all out

Then he'll take it all

There is no one here

Take it and hide it now

Yes

Please do be careful

If you lost it, everything will be over

I know

Second Madam, Master cousin

Second Madam

Is it for me ?

Yes

What is it ?

Chicken soup

Third Madam

Last time we tried to hurt the Dried bitter melon

We didn't make it

Now I have a great plan

What is it ?

She has a son & that's her advantage

If she doesn't have a son

She will be exactly same as you

Yes

I found a kind of laxative

We can put it into the soup

Then let the boy drink it and he will die for sure

The best part of this laxative

... is that you can't find the cause

Are you sure?

The pharmacist said...

an adult is likely to use the toilet...

at lease fifty to sixty times after taking it

This is great

Anyway, this chicken soup is ruined

She doesn't need to get it all

I'll save half for myself

Wait a moment! I'll get a container to keep it

Sure

Third Madam, you have to remember

The red one you can drink it

There is laxative in the white one

I got it

Sister, what are you talking about ?

Nothing

I've made some chicken soup

I added some monkey plum and the rice

It's for Chen Xiau

Is this the plum?

You have too many questions

These are very expensive

Don't be snoopy! Don't touch it!

Fong Mei, take it to them!

Yes

Not this one

Take this

Bring this bowl to them

Is there any difference?

No, this is better

It's better

Hurry up!

All right! I see

Sister, I've been here for a long time

This time you're the best

Go now!

Go! Hurry!

We have to get out of here

When it happens,

We'd rather not be in here

Yes

Yue Cin

What's the matter ?

My sister told me to bring you the chicken soup

Are you all right? Miss Fong Mei

I'm terribly useless

I'm so clumsy every time

And spoiled your chicken soup

It's all right. We don't mind

We can make the soup some other day

Yes, there is another bowl

Oh, forgot to add the rice

Yes, put more. It's good for the body

The chicken soup is here

There really is another bowl

Yes, a big bowl of it

Cen Mei, bring a couple of bowls

All of us can have some

Yes

What ?

Chicken soup

Brother-in-law

This is for Yue Cin and Chen Xiau

Why do they need the soup?

It's so tiring playing Mahjong each day

I should drink the soup

Bring me a bowl. Hurry!

Yes

Look at you!

That is why they give you the name

You look upset every single day

Just like a Dried bitter melon

How can I drink it in front of you ?

Cen Mei

What?

Take it down ! I'll drink it

When you are lucky...

There's even the chicken soup waiting for you

Cen Mei, give me a bowl

Wait ! You seldom step in my place

And now you want to drink the soup

Get out

If you like to have the chicken soup...

ask your dried bitter melon to make it for you

No one will serve you here

It's very delicious

You don't need to see

The rice and the monkey plum

I put them all in the soup

So fast ?

No

Toilet papers

Third Madam ?

Inside

Third Madam, I hear that...

you had diarrhea since last night

That's true

From last night to now

It's total forty eight times

It's a strong medicine

You went 48 times just smelled it

I not only smelled it

That silly girl pulled the whole bottle for me

No, it's coming again

Bring me the toilet papers

Where is that bowl of medicated chicken soup ?

That silly girl spilt it all

Hold me up quickly

What the heck? Just a little bit every time

Look at you! You can't even stand straight

Why are you still here? Go to take care of it

Go in! Hurry!

Third Madam

Honestly, these intriguing activities

You have to take care of it yourself

Second Madam, is this the book?

Yes. Come over, I'll teach you

You start reading this

Second Lady, you are nice to us...

except our first Madam

Look !

It's terrible!

Help! Fire!

Help!

Terrible! It's on fire...

Fire !

Please come to help

They are up there

Help!

Hurry...

The stairs are blocked by fire. We can't get close

Bo Wen, from there

Bring the ladders

Come on! Help!

Bring the ladders

Everyone comes to help

What happened ?

Who set the fire ?

Don't be afraid! It's all right

Hurry...

Be careful !

Third Madam, this fire is not a big deal

Are you saving the petrol ?

Sister, where is the fire ?

I don't know

I tell you that side of staircase was totally ablaze

Sister, this time you're going to die

What's the nonsense? It's you should die

The money and jewelry that you gave me

I was hiding it under the staircase

Now it was burned

So, are you in trouble or not ?

I'm over

I heard it works well

No matter what kind of pain caused by the money

Like headache, heartache and asphyxiation

You'll feel better right away after you apply it

Dumbshit, it's all your fault

You can hide in any place

Why did you have to chose there?

Don't blame me

How would I know that place would catch a fire?

Which goddamn asshole did it ?

Set the fire there

I'll go to the temple some other day

Praying that bad guy will suffer

He wouldn't be able to eat or sleep

He would have a son without asshole

What are you saying?

I wished that bad guy couldn't eat or sleep

Having a son without asshole

Shut up! Stop it!

Third Madam

Marital bliss is just not destined for you !

Why don't you just give him up

Do you think that you're better off than me?

We're in the same boat

Your husband is fooling around with others

If you don't believe me

You can go to The Azalea's Room

Look, you saw it with your own eyes

I didn't wrongly accuse your son

Second cousin-in-law, what happened ?

Are you still pretending?

I saw it with my own eyes

You are hugging each other

Do you think that I can still keep silent?

Should I follow Third Madam's foot step?

Throwing a party to welcome you

You're the first wife and I'll be the second

Yun Shia, what are you doing?

What ?

I'm asking her to give my husband back

Can you shut up ?

How dare you !

You've changed

You dare to order me now

Are you trying to show off in front of her?

Are you crazy?

So what if I am crazy?

I didn't do anything wrong

I'm not like her

She's married and still has a boyfriend on the side

Second cousin-in-law, please don't misunderstand

Second cousin just sympathises with me

Between us,

there is no affair whatsoever

You're the only person who knows the whole story

But my husband staying with you

Everyone can see it

I don't care. You have to leave

You can't be here if I am

You're insane

Our cousin is sick and she has no one

Where can she go?

Second Madam, perhaps there's a misunderstanding

Cousin Lady will never do such thing

First Madam

It wasn't happening to you

Look at the third Madam

Since Dried bitter melon came into our house

... she has been losing so much weight

I don't care, Chew Liang

You pack for her immediately

Get her out of here

Second Madam

Shut up!

Ya Tong was your mother-in-law's favorite

She was raised here since she was little

This is her home

She is so sick now

I'm here. You'll never kick her out

All right. I'll go if she stays

Cousin, they treated us unfairly

I don't care how much it costs

I want you to sue them

It's all right

Uncle

My cousin is from a very wealthy family

If you're going to throw her out

Maybe her family can't do anything

But I'm afraid of their powerful friends...

Third Madam, your luck is better than mine

Since Dried bitter melon came into our house

At least you're the legal wife

I just said a couple of words

They want to kick me out

Wish I could just hang myself and die

You could accompany me

Don't pull me !

Yun Shia

Second cousin-in-law

I want to die

Uncle

Let me go

Cousin Lady, where are you going ?

There is a poor relative of my mother-in-law

He lives very close to the country side

Second brother, will you say something?

What do you want me to say?

Ya Tong, please don't go !

If I don't leave today, I still have to go tomorrow

Chew Liang

What ? My lady

Kneel down

Uncle, these couple of years,

Chew Liang has been with me

This time I can't predict my future

Hoping you to keep Chew Liang here

At least she will have a job

Lady, I don't desire to be here

All along we have been like sisters

Now you're leaving alone

Without me your life would be tough as hell

Chew Liang

You have to promise me, cousin

If you have any problems

... you'll let us know

Cousin Lady, are you leaving now?

Yue Cin, don't be sad !

I have to go sooner or later

Cousin Lady

Fook Shin

Cousin Lady, the money from old master

Chew Liang

Lady

Presently we have no money

After we leave, you'll need to consult doctors

Ya Tong, take it

Thank you! Old Master

Cousin Lady! Cousin Lady!

These white azaleas

It's specially picked for you

Next year maybe I won't be able to see...

the azaleas blossom

Cousin, I've looked all over for you

He was gone early morning

Lady, we should go

Otherwise we can't make it before dark

Cousin Lady...

Stop

Master cousin, please hurry up

Cousin, if really that day arrives

I'll certainly tell you

Let's go

It's so hard to say goodbye than to meet

The bird was weeping all over the mountains

A silkworm dies but the silk remains

It's a pity to see the plum flower wither

Come over

Since the cousin lady left

The second young master is very lonely

There are lots of strange people...

and stories here

Stop talking

It's none of our concern

Come, I'll take you to the back door

Go to bed earlier when you get back

Don't think too much

There are many kinds of people

... who lived in your Yang's courtyard

They will do anything dirty

It's not your business

Third young master

What are you looking at ?

Those things belong to our family

It's none of your business

Third young master, wait

The money I gave Yung Lan to buy her freedom

It must be stolen by you

You can't wrongly accuse others

When did you see...

I took the money from Yung Lan's suitcase ?

Don't go!

Third young master, if you didn't steal it

How did you know the money was in the suitcase?

You give back our money right now

Damn you

Let go! I'll hit you

I won't let go of you unless you pay us back

Damn you

Stop fighting

Oh no! Hong

Let's go! Hurry up!

Cen Mei

Good morning

Where are you going ?

I'm going to find some books

Where is the murderer?

She killed my husband

Get her!

I'm innocent! Old Master

Second Madam is a nice lady

She will never do it

I can guarantee she is not that kind of person

Then who is the murderer?

There must be someone who did it

Uncle, we got all the evidences

What are you waiting for ?

No

Is there any prime witness ?

If there is no one,

how can you say you got all the evidences ?

If there were someone there,

she wouldn't kill

Old Master, no need messing around with her

If she didn't get execution...

God must be blind

My poor Zhe Huei

I can't believe you...

killed my loving husband

Take her away

-Old master -Dad

Old Master... I can't leave

I have a son to raise

I need to take care of him

I'm not afraid to die, Old Master

But Chen Xiau will be an orphan without parents

No one will take care of him

Please have mercy! Old Master

Release me! Old Master

Shut your big mouth

Captain Wang, why don't you take her away ?

Wait !

Hong

Don't get her. She didn't do it

It's you again. Why are you here?

Let her go! I'm the killer

You! You're crazy!

Are you covering up for the money?

What happened? Yung Lan

First Madam

It was Ah Hong in the garden last night...

who hit third young Master

After I sent Ah Hong away

Third young Master's corpse disappeared

I didn't know what happened

It was you

Take him away! Captain Wang

Yes

Wait

Ah Hong is also innocent

Because third young Master didn't die in the garden

He died in the library

Ah Hong, he wasn't killed by you

If they want to make wrong accusations...

They can have me

Third young Master was killed by a knife

Why did you have to admit it ?

If they take you...

What should I do ?

Fourth young Master, we grew up together

After I'm gone...

Please take care of Yung Lan for me

I will. Don't worry!

Uncle, he has admitted

Why don't you let Captain Wang take him?

Captain Wang, take the killer away

Take him

Hong...

-Let me go -Go...

It's really pissed me off

I thought that I could get rid of her

Who'd have known she'd still be there

What's more, she's in a stronger position too

Now you lost your husband

She has a son but you don't

When they divide the family fortune

I can't imagine how sad you will be

The issue is that she has a son

If she doesn't have Chen Xiau

You'll be the same

What are you doing? Third Madam

We can't be here at the same time

Please! Don't do it!

Please let Chen Xiau go

Third Madam, what are you doing?

Give me back my son...

Third Madam

Help...

My son...

Help...

Where are you going?

Is there a well here?

Old Master

What's wrong? What happened?

Third Madam took Chen Xiau

Come

Baby...

Hurry up! Help!

Sister

Sister

Second brother

Third Madam and Chen Xiau fell into the well

Sister...

No...

Cousin Master, our lady is dead

No. Ya Tong didn't die

Calm down! Zhe Siang

Ya Tong is not dead

I want to see Ya Tong

Ya Tong is dead

She didn't

In this whole world, I'm living alone

Ya Tong didn't die...

Second brother...

First Madam ...

Chen Chong

Zhe Siang is gone

My four sons, they are either dead or gone

Zhe Yin, you are the only one I have

This house is very quiet

Third sister-in-law, why are you doing it?

Fourth young Master

For a woman,

it was unfortunate enough to lose a husband

Now my son is dead too

What do I have now?

I'm only looking for a better next life

Old Master, I'm going to the monastery

I can't be here to serve you

Please forgive me

Bo Wen, are you leaving ?

It's time to go

You don't want to wait for that person?

I think the eldest sister-in-law should leave

Before I came back

I've heard about the story of you two

I sympathise with my eldest sister-in-law

Even her only son is dead

She shouldn't stay in our family

We have no reason to keep her

You've seen what happened in our family...

in the last two years

Bo Wen, take her away

Okay, I'll try it again

Fourth young Master

About Miss Fong Mei...

I know

Yes, Bo Wen

There is a relative of Fong Mei living in the city

Would you mind to take her along?

Can you?

Certainly

I'll prepare her a ticket tomorrow

Thank you, Teacher Chen. Thank you so much

You're welcome

Please give this letter to her

Shu Jen

I'm leaving tomorrow

I'm afraid that I won't be back again

Everyone is either gone or died

There is no reason to stay here

But it's still my home

Shu Jen

Do you realise the fact ?

In this generation,

This kind of family won't last anymore

Before the red door completely fell over

You should leave this place

Leave? Where should I go?

Don't forget, outside the door

There are the rules set for the women

We're too weak to oppose the social system

It's all the men who tried to dupe the women

Leave it alone, it doesn't matter

It's clear that women aren't supposed to remarry

My father is well educated

I also studied for a short time

Do you think that I can go with you?

Have you thought about...

what should we do in the future?

All the worries and memories...

will be gone with the river

Maybe one day it'd just be me here...

to see the door falling

Perhaps only I'll be here in the future...

to keep this garden

It's nothing but destiny !

What can we do?

It is fate eight years ago

Now 8 years later it is fate again

But did you ever think of me ?

I've been awaiting you for eight years

I can't repay you in this life

After waiting all those years

You just gave me this answer

We're here today but who knows about tomorrow

I'm afraid that we won't be seeing each other again

You have to take care of yourself

Wear more clothes when it's cold

Eat more when you're hungry

How about you?

Me ? Same words

Don't hate me and don't wait for me either

Yung Lan

-Take care! -You too

Good bye, Bo Wen

Good bye

Yung Lan, see you

Bye, Shu Jen

What happened?...

Excuse me

What's going on? Uncle Chen

I tell you, Fourth young Master

Second Madam and Cousin Master...

are smuggling munitions

The army in the city is looking for them

Shong Gi Fang, there are all the proofs

Do you have any objections?

Shong Gi Fang

What wrong have we ever done to you ?

You hid the smuggling munitions in our garden

Uncle, don't listen to him

I'm good friends with your Captain Wang

You won't get involved if you're smart

Captain Wang?

Yes

We arrested him this morning

That's the reason...

we found out you two are smuggling the arms

Yun Shia

Better go and inform your father

Give them some money to solve it

Damn you

It's not my problem

What are you saying?

It's not your business if I get caught

Certainly

There is no relationship between you and me

You...

All right

I'm telling you. She killed Zhe Huei

You're lying. I didn't kill anyone

I'm going to kill you

Uncle, she killed Zhe Huei

Calm down ! I'll take it off myself

Second sister-in-law and Gi Fang are here

Second sister-in-law has lots of jewelry

Gi Fang, you are so wealthy

With you both to lean on I don't need be a destitute

It's not me. You're lying

He is the murderer. It's him

Shut up! Both of you are guilty

Come

Yes

What are you doing?

Let me go...I'm innocent!

Take them back

Let me go...I'm innocent!

Yang De Chen

There are munitions in your house

We need to seal it

You'll have to move out in three days

Dad

Fourth young Master...

Eldest sister-in-law, Yung Lan, Ah Hong

Where have you been? It has been six years

It's a long story

I went to join the student movement

They accused me of being a revolutionary...

and imprisoned me for six years

I just came out not long ago

Eldest sister-in-law, how have you been?

Not bad; I've been teaching at the primary school

They got married

And their child is three years old

Fourth young Master, you just came back

You'd be needing a place to stay

Why don't you stay with us for a while ?

Yes, you can stay with us

No, I have to go down the south

Join the revolution army

I just passed by this time

Came back with a desire to see my old home !
