Hey, guys, look who's here.
Morning, Nicole.
Gentlemen, devices away.
Uh, we'll pick this up later. Bye.
I brought breakfast.
-Sweet. What did you bring? -Mini quiches.
But don't I get a kiss hello first?
Sorry.
Good morning, Grandma.
Good morning to you, too. Where's your sister?
Still dead to the world.
I didn't mean to say that like that.
No, it's, um, it's fine.
It's a figure of speech, I get that.
And as a psychiatrist, I understand
that sometimes metaphors can bring up unexpected emotions.
But now what?
My visit this morning isn't about death
or the dreaded "C" word.
What's it about? I mean, besides mini quiches.
The "F" word.
And "F" stands for family.
I love their French toast.
Sadly, my waistline doesn't.
[chuckles]
Anything appeal?
I think I'll just have coffee this morning.
I don't have much of an appetite.
I'm not surprised.
I mean, with everything your family's going through.
Nicole filled me in on Anita's diagnosis
and that you'll all need genetic testing.
It's a lot.
And Nicole...
-Being strong for everybody? -Always.
She'll have to let us be there for her, too.
Hmm. I've only been trying to convince her of that
my whole life.
Well, you both can count on me.
How are you coping?
Daddy's beside himself with concern for Mother
while being his usual patriarch stoic.
Chelsea and Naomi are obviously stunned
and worried for their gran,
and they may have to get this testing, too.
I didn't ask how the other Duprees were coping.
I asked about you, Dani.
โช โช
Of course I'm happy for you, Mom.
I just can't talk right now.
Because I have the early shift and I'm behind the desk, yes.
I will call you later. Thank you.
Sorry about that.
My mom just had to call to tell me
about a man she met on her cruise.
It's fine.
Well, I know the bigwigs don't like when we take
personal calls on duty, so...
Yeah, it's not so bad
as long as it doesn't compromise patient care.
Well, that is not what you said a few days ago
when you were laying into the student nurses.
Different circumstances.
So if a head honcho comes in and catches me in the act,
-you're just going to... -I'll remind them that
we are more than just our jobs,
and we nurses deserve the right to live a little, too.
Okay, I'm sorry, but who are you
and what have you done with Shanice Johnson, RN?
You, uh, been up all night?
Usually, women don't come floating in here
before lunch dressed to kill.
I don't kill, son, unless it's absolutely necessary.
I'm looking for your boss.
Is he expecting you, Ms....?
Thomas.
And he sure as hell better be expecting me
since he's the one who called this meeting.
Well, Ms. Thomas, I will let him know you're here.
You do that, sport.
RANDY: Hmm.
[sighs]
Ooh.
Don't mind if I do.
Thank you.
A little early for Scotch, isn't it?
[chuckles]
Time zones were invented for a reason.
And it's always 5:00 somewhere.
If I were you, I would take the win and move on.
Celebrate me feeling generous this morning.
[laughs]
Whatever you say, boss.
So, tell me about Jan's new cruise boo.
-I've been afraid to ask. -Why?
Because my mom goes overboard--
no pun intended-- when it comes to having crushes on guys.
I mean, she's just-- she gets so intense, you know,
like smothery intense, and then she gets her heart broken
when the latest man runs for the hills.
Well, maybe this guy will be different.
I'm happy for her that she met somebody.
You know, I guess they don't call it The Love Boat
for nothing.
I got to call Mona and get the whole story,
since Mom tells her bestie all the juicy details
she leaves out with me.
You worried?
Skeptical.
It all just seems a little too good to be true.
Why?
Don't tell me you believe
-in love at first sight. -Just make sure
you monitor while she's in recovery...
First sight? No.
But I am a big believer in finding it in unexpected places.
You're here to bring mini quiches
and give us a lecture on the value of family.
I'm confused.
I certainly didn't intend to lecture.
We know that, don't we, Martin?
Tyrell, why don't you
put those in the oven to warm up?
-Sure. -And no sampling.
[Nicole laughs]
You're having issue with my choice of words?
Just clarifying.
You're not here to discuss the "C" word.
But with Gran's diagnosis and the implications
two generations down, who could think of anything else?
And it's not like you to distract yourself.
There are plenty of people in this town
who would bury their heads in the sand in a crisis.
I am not one of them.
I have always believed in facing facts head-on.
-You know that about me, Martin. -You're right, I do.
I walked in and saw three people connected to their devices.
Not a family.
We can't let this diagnosis make us more insular.
Now more than ever,
we need to be engaged with each other.
I stand corrected, and I'm starting to see your strategy.
Hence the delicious mini quiches.
A gesture-- breaking bread together, a bond.
I love that you worry about me.
And trust me, I know how serious Mother's diagnosis is.
But this breakfast gesture wasn't about
being sad for your grandmother.
It's about taking the time to see each other
and show that we care.
How can we help?
By remembering that long before
she was the magnificent Anita Dupree,
reigning over Fairmont Crest,
she was Anita Williams,
the scrappy little Black girl from the streets of Chi-Town
who sang lead
for one of the most popular girl groups of all time.
We need to believe in her.
We need to know that cancer came for a warrior.
And it's about to find out
just how tough she is.
Now you see what you made me do? [sniffles]
It wasn't my intention to make you test the limits
of your waterproof mascara, darling.
Just looking for some honesty.
Honestly, I am somewhere between composed and cracking,
and now that I've said that out loud, I feel not one bit better.
Proving honesty is overrated.
You don't believe that at all.
It's what you love about your relationship with Andre.
-Stop being right. -Can't help it.
I happen to have spectacular judgment
in real estate and friends.
And since you and Nicole are the best friends
a gal could have, I'm proving you don't have
to put on a fabulous face for me.
Nicole and I are very lucky to have you on our side.
And not for nothing, so is Joey Armstrong.
Uh...
You brought up his name, and it isn't a reprimand.
Usually, you're pointing out how he's not right for me.
Which is still true, but so is this.
Joey hit the jackpot with you,
and I just hope he's smart enough to see it.
-What's this for? -The hooch.
Your money's no good here unless you're gambling.
These days I'm more into a sure bet.
-Is that right? -Hmm.
Indeed.
Since you asked me here,
I'm hoping that that's a sign
that you have some good news for me.
Oh, unless you're one of those sadistic types
who gets off on giving bad news face-to-face.
No, if I have bad news to deliver,
I have people for that.
That way I don't disturb my wa.
Heaven forbid.
Now, what the hell is wa?
It's a Japanese concept meaning peace, harmony, and balance.
Well-read.
And well-traveled.
Noted.
He gets around, so do I.
And I'm here because...?
I'm going to partner with you on financing
that free clinic of yours.
Ha! I knew it!
-Ah! -Don't touch me.
Okay. Hmm.
Now, if I'm going to do you this solid...
I'm gonna want something in return.
I'd be a nervous wreck if I had to stand around
-waiting for those test results. -Same.
Your great-grandmother isn't standing around.
She's getting on with her life, which is the point.
It is exactly what she wants the family to do.
And we're back to the "F" word.
Exactly. Family and tradition.
Which brings me to the important task
that I do not want to give short shrift,
namely the tradition of Dupree women being presented.
To what?
Your grandmother is talking about the cotillion.
Where Samantha will be presented before polite society.
SMITTY: Polite society?
That sounds a little Downton Abbey-ish.
[chuckles] A little, but it is so much more than that.
You and Martin had just started dating when Kat had her debut.
So you didn't attend.
I wish I had.
Really.
I'm just starting to learn about all the moving parts,
but it seems like an impressive event.
Tyrell, I can't wait for you and,
of course, Samantha, to see
what the cotillion experience means
to a young Black woman on the precipice of her future.
Yeah, that'll be something.
Tyrell, would you please go upstairs
and wake up your sister?
Samantha and I have a lot of work to do.
-Did Mrs. Lansing rest well? -She did.
The nurse I assigned to her was just in,
administering her latest round of pain meds.
-She's healing nicely, stitches intact. -Excellent.
I'll check on her a little later.
Oh, and, uh, thank you for your advice about Nicole.
Uh, you were right, as usual-- she was in need of a friend.
You're a very insightful person, Nurse Johnson.
Careful, Doctor, such high praise might go to my head.
Hmm.
I should pop by Mrs. Lansing's room
before the pain meds knock her out.
[clears throat]
You need a throat lozenge or something?
Uh, no, I need you to tell me what's going on
between you and Dr. Richardson.
I think maybe you'd better elaborate
so there's no misunderstanding.
Gladly.
I don't think I need to remind you just how expensive
an endeavor like this would be for the both of us.
Well, that much is understood, and it's for a worthy cause.
[scoffs]
Nevertheless... if I'm going to pony up
the kind of money that you're talking about...
...I'm going to need a substantial
return on my investment.
Oh, I get where this is going.
-Do you? -Mm-hmm.
You're not the first man I've encountered
who suffers from the Madonna-whore complex.
Come again?
See, you want a nice,
bred-in-society lady like Vanessa on your arm
and out in public.
And yet you want a freak in the sheets like me.
My Teddy Bear was the same way.
And listen, I-I really wouldn't have minded
setting up arrangements like that with you, Joey,
if I hadn't already started something new.
Oh. [clicks tongue]
You snooze, you lose, big boy.
Well, I'm starting to see how you managed
to sink your talons into Nicole Dupree's husband.
I guess your...
"Teddy" didn't stand a chance, did he?
[chuckling]: No, he didn't.
In fact, most men don't
when it comes to Dana Leslie Thomas.
Good thing I'm not most men.
And I don't need a tug and a tickle.
No, what I need is something more substantive.
Such as?
That free clinic of yours being dedicated
to the memory of the late Doug McBride.
I don't know whether to be touched or annoyed
that you're still finding time to worry about my relationship.
I mean, with everything your family's facing.
If you make me cry again, this friendship is over.
Okay, okay, I will not say anything else
that will cause more waterworks.
But at least tell me you are finding comfort
in the sculpted arms of that gorgeous young husband of yours.
Andre has been great.
Beyond great-- caring, encouraging, attentive.
It's-it's like he has this sixth sense
for when I need him to be right next to me, holding me tight,
and when I need space.
And Bill's been wonderful, too.
Wait, of all people, he doesn't need
a cameo in this conversation.
He is the girls' father.
And he has been great with them. Very present.
Mm-hmm.
-What? -Oh, come on, Dani,
you and I both know Bill Hamilton's
happier than a pig in...
How'd you used to say it when our kids were small?
Stressed, hormonal, irritable and tired?
-[laughs] -Yes. That.
Happier than a pig in that when he's able
to be your personal Mr. Fixit.
Okay, so the role comes second nature to him.
He was always the one to pick me up
and put me back together.
Which would have been nice
if he hadn't always been the one who broke you.
No argument there.
Which begs the question,
does your new husband know the O.G. model's
back to playing knight in shining armor?
Dr. Richardson--
Ted-- was just totally flirting with you.
Can you lower your voice, please?
Okay, so now you want to be discreet
when the gossip is about you.
There is absolutely nothing to gossip about.
-Bull. -Excuse me?
You didn't even blink when he was flirting with you.
Actually, it was like you weren't surprised at all.
[gasps] Hold up. Are you and Ted...?
Don't you have some work to do,
Little Miss Thing with all the ideas?
Actually, I'm all caught up on my work.
Well, not anymore.
[laughs]
[elevator bell dings]
Vernon. Hey, uh, good to see you.
How you holding up?
I've had my moments.
I'm just doing what I can to be there for Anita and the family.
-Yeah. -I suppose you're doing the same
for Martin and Kat.
I am. I just wish there was more I could do
while we're anxiously waiting
to get the BRCA gene test results back.
Well, we won't have to wait a whole lot longer.
I just pray the family is strong enough,
come what may.
These quiches were delicious, Nicole.
MARTIN: Ah.
-It lives. -Ha ha, you're hilarious, Pop.
Good morning, Sleeping Beauty.
Morning, Dad. Hey, Grandma.
Your grandmother brought breakfast.
Mm, I'll get some later.
Oh, no, you don't.
[groans] Grandma.
Up you go. Early bird catches the worm.
I'm having flashbacks.
-Did you ever get to sleep in? -With Nicole Dupree as a mother?
Rarely.
I heard that, Martin.
Why are we talking about worms so early in the morning?
It's an idiom, genius, and it's almost noon.
We let you sleep in because
your holiday break is almost over.
But your grandmother wanted to see you.
That's right, we have to buckle down
on our cotillion planning.
You should have just led with that!
Our upcoming debut is all anyone can talk about
in the cotillion's group chat.
Pretty sure the whole town is watching, and I'm glowing.
Not going to lie, I get total aura points.
Excellent, I knew you would be just as excited
as I am once you found out why I was here.
I haven't seen a deb as pumped as you since your Aunt Kat.
I was totally locked in, Grandma, but...
I feel kind of guilty.
Guilty? Why?
Because of Great-Grandma.
Isn't it, I don't know, kind of frivolous
to be worried about a cotillion
when she could be dying of cancer?
Did I hear this right?
You want to dedicate our new venture,
our new community health facility,
to your girlfriend's dead husband?
-That surprises you? -Hell yeah, it surprises me.
You must really feel guilty about
what went down with McBride.
Andre is not concerned about Bill.
He doesn't do jealousy, and I don't give him reason to,
which is very refreshing after being married to Bill.
That man had the audacity to police
every innocuous exchange I had with any male.
Well, it's usually the cheaters who think
everyone else is cheating.
Exactly! And it was Bill who was being
constantly unfaithful.
Glad you haven't forgotten his armor's
more rust than shine-- and none of it's charming.
I remember.
Listen, I know how good I have it with Andre,
and I do not intend to mess that up.
Good. Now I've got to get going.
Tell Joey I said hello.
And what I said before about him being lucky?
Still stands.
[chuckles]
I find guilt to be the most useless emotion
the gods have saddled us with.
Why?
You let poor, dim-witted Dr. Doug
rack up a gambling debt
in this very casino.
Then he drove himself into a ravine,
three sheets to the wind on booze from your bar.
And then you started
getting busy with his widow.
And where'd you hear all that?
Oh, I have my sources, Joey.
So you're telling me you're not the least bit remorseful?
We all make choices. Doug made his.
He overestimated his luck, and he underestimated
the amount of alcohol he consumed.
No, it's not like I owe you any explanation.
But my acknowledging him with this gesture
has nothing to do with guilt.
It's about honoring the father of Vanessa's children.
You really do care about her, don't you?
She's your kryptonite.
No, I'm no Superman, and Vanessa knows that.
Now, do we have a deal or not?
How about a compromise?
What if I name a room
in the Leslie Thomas Outreach Project
after the dearly departed Dougie?
I'm sure finding out that her latest flame
has done such a lavish honor,
Ms. Vanessa will be won over with major brownie points.
I was just in with the hospital chief of staff.
Oh, Lia is good people.
Yeah, the lab was backed up so...
Mm-hmm.
She offered to make a few calls
to see if she can get things moving along.
Normally I wouldn't ask for special treatment.
Well, you didn't ask, she offered.
And I hope you would accept.
I know how proud you Duprees can be.
Sometimes it's true.
I know Nicole will be relieved once the test results come back.
She's been putting on a brave face for the kids
and the grandkids, but I know she's not
going to breathe easy until she's certain
Martin and Kat are in the clear.
It is quite remarkable to see you
still showing up for Nicole and the kids.
I will never stop showing up.
Your daughter will always be my family.
Believe me, Samantha, the last thing
your great-grandmother wants is for you to feel bad
about enjoying your debutante season.
You really think Great-Gran wouldn't mind?
Honey, your great-grandmother's family
couldn't afford for her to be a debutante or much else
when she was growing up in Chicago.
Even if she had been available for it, she was already
on the road with her girls' group
by the age she would have come out.
And then she met your great-grandfather,
moved to Fairmont Crest
and he took her to her very first cotillion.
One of his cousins was being presented.
Now, of course, at this point she was theAnita Williams,
former lead singer of the Articulettes,
current jazz stylist extraordinaire.
She knew all about glamour at this point.
Even still, she said she was so mesmerized
by all the sheer,
unadulterated Black excellence on display at that cotillion.
What do you mean?
She told Dani and me that she saw young Black women
who didn't have to go off and sell gold records like she did
for their shot at upward mobility.
They gained poise, leadership skills,
had access to educational and philanthropic opportunities
through the debutante program.
So it's less about pageantry and more about a path to power.
Mother swore from that moment on
that if she ever had daughters, she would make sure
that they had the experience she wasn't afforded,
which is why she wanted Dani and me to have our debuts.
Now, of course, Dani didn't, because she was off modelling.
So was Chelsea, but Naomi had her cotillion.
And Mom passed that tradition down to Kat.
And now I am passing it down to you.
Give me a break.
Uh, son, have you lost your mind?
Hold on, Martin.
Go on, Tyrell.
It's not just that.
You guys are sitting here
talking about debutantes and cotillions
when real people could care less about those sort of things.
I'm not real people?
I mean regular people.
Ones who don't have house managers
or live in pretentious gated communities.
Tyrell.
Seriously, Ty?
Apologize to your grandmother right now.
Calm down, Martin.
And that goes for everyone.
I asked Tyrell for his opinion and he's giving it.
I don't mean any disrespect, Grandma.
And I know how hard you and the rest
of the Duprees work for everything you have.
It's just Samantha and I had life way worse
than Great-Gran ever did.
And there was no singing group to save us.
If Pop and Dad hadn't adopted us,
those kind of people that debuted at cotillions
wouldn't want two kids who have a drug addict
for a mother and an absentee father anywhere near them.
That's why they live behind the gates.
-That was fast. -Really, Shanice?
You think I'm going to forget that
-you didn't answer my question? -Which was?
What is going on between you and Dr. Richardson?
I will not be spilling any personal tea while on duty.
Since when?
I may like to indulge in other people's tea,
but when it comes to my own,
-I don't share as much as a teaspoon. -Come on, please.
I am stranded on a deserted, loveless island right now.
At least let me live vicariously through your love life.
Okay, fine.
If you must know, Ted and I met up for New Year's Eve.
New Year's... [chuckles]
Did you guys kiss?
-Oh, you totally did. Was it good? -Shh!
No complaints.
Are you gonna go on another date?
It wasn't a date, exactly.
Anyway, things might get tricky because
I encouraged him to spend time with his ex.
Now, why on earth would you play matchmaker
to Nicole and Ted when you are so obviously into him?
Nurse Ashley, I need you to check the results
of some blood work Dr. Ahn ordered.
Okay, just going to keep making up work for me to do
to avoid my questions.
Work is what we get paid to do here.
Yes, ma'am.
Patient name?
There are two.
The name's Dupree.
Nicole and Danielle Dupree.
So you weren't ignoring my question.
You were respecting HIPAA laws.
What's the test?
It was a multi-gene panel for BRCA one and two.
-Oh, my God. -Yeah.
Here I am complaining about my love life
and Naomi's family's going through something like this.
I feel like a horrible friend.
You had no way of knowing that,
but now you do, so you can be there for your girl.
Here's my ever-busy youngest.
What are you up to?
Agency biz.
Has to be done and keeps my mind off...
well, everything.
And how about you? Did you get a squash game in?
I hear it's a great stress reliever.
Sometimes it is, but no,
this was a swimming and infrared sauna kind of afternoon.
What's on your mind, huh?
Besides the obvious.
Vanessa-- she was admonishing me
for telling Bill about what's going on.
Oh, Dani.
I know, you gave me similar advice
about leaning on my new husband, not my old one.
What God hath brought together, let no man,
especially Bill Hamilton, put asunder.
There's a reason they put that in the wedding vows.
[laughs] Daddy, be serious!
All right, all right.
Bill feels comfortable,
like an old pair of well-worn shoes.
Meanwhile, Andre
is a shiny new pair
of those high-end designer heels that you and your mother like.
Louboutins?
Hamilton is a ratty old pair of sneakers
that should have been tossed out decades ago,
and Andre is Louboutins-- high-end.
Slip your feelings into him, sweetheart.
Thank you, Daddy.
Anytime.
Hello, beautiful.
We celebrating something?
I am expanding my reach in the DMV,
and not only do I have the Duprees
asking me for my help
for their highfalutin charity events,
now I am partnering
with Mr. Joey Armstrong on my free clinic.
[whistles]
You might want to rethink that partnership.
Armstrong isn't someone you want to cross.
And neither am I.
First thing we're going to be changing is that name.
Guess who?
What do I get if I guess right?
I'd tell you,
but it might get us arrested in at least six states.
I'll take my chances.
No, I'm sorry, Dad, but I am sick of him speaking for me.
Tyrell, we may have the same origin story,
but just because you want to wear it like some
tragic martyr's badge of honor doesn't mean that I do.
Grandma, I would be honored
to follow in your, Naomi, and Kat's footsteps.
So maybe I wouldn't have had the chance to become a deb
if we had stayed in foster care.
But I was blessed to be adopted by this family
and I do have the opportunity.
So why shouldn't I take it?
Hear, hear.
-Of course you'd take her side. -I'm not taking anyone's side.
But unlike you,
I'm well-versed in what it means to be a deb
in the life of a young Black woman.
You guys keep emphasizing Black women,
but didn't bougie Black people copy
the cotillion culture from Europeans?
It's as if they thought copying white society
would give us the respectability we deserve.
How is that working out for us?
You're right, Tyrell.
What you're talking about is called respectability politics.
Yes, that right there.
Our cotillions do
have certain similarities
to those of our white counterparts,
but there is one significant difference.
What's that?
Our history, our story.
The story of a people held down by
hundreds of years of slavery,
by Jim Crow, by systemic racism,
having to flee the South during the Great Migration,
enduring white flight to suburbia,
which crippled inner cities.
Even through all of that tragedy,
we still managed to triumph.
Our ancestors built schools and communities,
raised respectable children, educated themselves
and, against seemingly insurmountable odds,
achieved the American dream.
Beautifully said, Nicole.
And I hope you were listening closely, Tyrell.
I was.
Okay, that may be true,
but do we still need cotillions
and fraternities or sororities today?
Don't they just continue classism?
It's an us-versus-them,
haves-versus-have-nots mentality?
I've never heard you talk like this.
Where is this coming from?
Straight from the mouth of Jessica.
Tyrell's sweetheart Jessica was supposed to be
a deb this season, but
she's barely been to any of the meetings.
You're so obsessed with her
that you're living in a headcanon she wrote.
Spoken like a true elitist in training.
I bet once you move behind the gates,
you'll forget about all the people from our old hood.
That is so not true.
Tyrell, I'm curious, have you or Jessica done
any research into how organizations like
the Barrington County Debutante Society,
my Divine Nine sorority,
or your pop's fraternity give back to the community?
Not really.
Well, maybe you should.
We also give scholarships to young women
who can't afford the fees associated with being a deb,
as well as scholarships to college
and a lifetime of networking opportunities.
And I can't believe you, Tyrell.
Jessica has your nose wide open.
I get that, though.
When I met your pop, he had my nose wide open.
But being the curious type, I questioned him.
I pushed back.
But first you decide that you're interested in UCLA
because Jessica's going there,
and now her beliefs are your beliefs.
Have you lost all ability to think for yourself?
Tyrell, you have given me a lot to think about.
-Yeah? -Yes.
Specifically, how something like a cotillion
can feel to someone who wasn't raised
around that sort of thing.
Maybe a little closed off,
even unwelcoming, without trying to be.
Right, that's all I was saying.
And I'm hoping that I have given you a different perspective
regarding the legacy and strides
of the organizations that the Duprees are part of.
[sighs] You've got me thinking, but,
honestly, I don't think I'll be able
to change Jessica's mind.
Well, then maybe you should have her give me a call.
I could find out what's bothering her
and maybe I can ease her mind.
-You'd do that for her? -Of course, it's not a problem.
My generation could learn a lot from yours and vice versa.
That is, if both sides seize the opportunity
to listen more than they speak.
You've given me a lot to think about, Daddy,
and I promise I will.
Happy to help.
Especially since there's
not much I can help with in life right now.
I better get home to your mother.
-Love you. -Love you.
[phone chimes]
Mm, wait, before you make me forget.
I have news.
Don't leave me in suspense.
You're looking at Leslie Thomas's new partner.
God help us. Yeah, she is something.
But I'm going to finance her new free clinic with her.
Joey, I am so proud of you.
Not only is it respectable, it will help a lot of people.
I promise you won't regret this.
Hmm.
That sounds an awful lot like a confession.
Well, a confession would imply
that I have done something wrong.
But I'm a law-abiding citizen
with a squeaky-clean record.
Now, being a law-abiding citizen
and having a squeaky-clean record?
That's two separate things entirely.
Then what am I confessing to?
Being linked to a known shady individual.
Just make sure Joey's funding your clinic
with funds from one of his legit businesses
if you want to keep that squeaky-clean record of yours
from being soiled by association.
Well, I don't mind getting
a little dirty every now and again.
If it's with the right person.
That's good to know.
โช That's why I need youโช
โช Like holy water...โช
Give me a call when you get this.
Okay.
Oh, going down?
Oh, I am taking the stairs from here on out, remember?
That won't always be practical.
What if there's an emergency?
[elevator dings]
Maybe you should take a chance.
Maybe you're right.
