Atticus has been acting strangely
all week.

On Monday...

..he didn't eat his little lunch.

We have never seen Atticus
not eat his little lunch.

We have never seen Atticus not eat.

Atticus eats all the time.
He must have been sick.

I'm sure it had to do
with his mum and dad going away.

My mum had a conference for work
in New Zealand

and my dad had never been
to New Zealand, so he went too.

Guess who else
had never been to New Zealand.

Me! But I didn't go.

I had to stay at home with my ya-ya.

That means grandma.

Atticus's grandma's really nice.
She's from Russia.

No, I think she's French.
I thought she was from Turkey.

She's from the place where
they make lunches that smell weird.

Seriously, I don't even know
WHAT was in my lunch box.

It may have been vegetable...

..once, before my ya-ya pickled it
and kept it in a jar for 100 years.

She pickles everything.

I love it when my nan comes over.

Atticus is lucky he has his yoyo
stay with him for the whole week.

I think it's 'ya-ya'.

His ya-ya. That's funny.

No. That's what he calls
his grandma.

His ya-ya.

It's a yoyo, not a ya-ya.

Who's ever heard of a ya-ya?

Atticus, because that's
what he calls his grandma.

My mum says I'm a fussy eater,
so she doesn't cook like Ya-ya cooks.

She just makes normal food.

On Monday night
when Ya-ya made dinner,

I only ate the bread
and even that was sour.

On Tuesday,
Atticus was still being strange.

Not just strange. Cranky!

has a unicorn, it sparkles.

My mum says I get grumpy
when I'm hungry.

And I was hungry.

I thought little lunch on Tuesday
would be OK,

because I'd asked my ya-ya
for cheese and biscuits.

But - I don't know how -

she had pickled the cheese

and pickled the biscuits.

I needed some food.

There is an emergency loaf of bread
and a jar of jam in the staffroom.

If you forget your lunch,
you can make a sandwich.

Ah.

Technically,
I didn't FORGET my lunch.

And technically,
I didn't make A sandwich.

I think that's enough, Atticus.

You're only allowed
to forget your lunch for one day.

After that, the school
rings your parents and says

they understand mornings are busy,
but we need to bring lunch.

Then your mum has to pick up sushi
and drop it off

and yell, 'Rory, stop forgetting
to put your lunch in your bag!

Do you realise I was in the middle
of an important meeting?'

Because I'd used
my emergency jam sandwich,

I had to think of something else
for Wednesday.

Moose. Cow. Fish.

Moose...

I've seen a lot of good junk food
brought into the school.

Most of it's been mine.

But what Atticus had done
was on a whole new level.

He had a bucket of chicken
delivered.

Just to be clear,

we are not talking about
one leftover teriyaki drumstick.

It was lots of drumsticks.
And chips.

And coleslaw.

Where did you get that from?!

It's my lunch order day.

School lunch orders are on Tuesdays
and Thursdays - not Wednesdays.

I told my ya-ya that Wednesday
was lunch order day.

And that meant
she had to order my lunch

from the takeaway chicken shop
that was on TV

and drop it off at school.

Please, Atticus!
Please give me some chicken!

I'll give you my laptop
that's in the classroom.

That belongs to the school.
Shh! I REALLY want some chicken.

Yes!

You know I can't really give you
the laptop.

I think Wednesday was the best day
of my life.

I felt bad about lying to Ya-Ya, so
I didn't ask for another lunch order

on Thursday - which was yesterday.

I thought maybe I would have got
used to her cooking. But I hadn't.

Luckily, Mr Haliotis the PE teacher

was doing an outdoor
life preparation course

and yesterday's lesson was damper.

Damper is a bread
you make in a fire.

It's an excellent food
for the wilderness

and surprisingly easy to make.

I knew we would be studying damper
this term.

We weren't studying it.
We were making it.

So I got my dad to try a few out
with me in our barbecue at home.

You did damper homework?
Why?

So mine would be perfect.

Yes! Melanie! Tamara! Look!

And it was perfect. It really was.

What?!

I... I don't know what happened.

One minute it was perfect.
The next minute it was burnt.

Honestly. It was golden and fluffy.

Like that?

I took Debra-Jo's damper.

But only for a second.
I was just so hungry.

But when I saw how upset she was,
I had to put it back...

..and eat my own.

Something has definitely been wrong
with Atticus all week.

And today he forgot his lunch box.
Again.

Mum and Dad come home tonight.

I knew I only had one more lunch box
to get through,

but when I saw
what Ya-Ya had packed this morning...

..I accidentally on purpose
left it at home.

I didn't want to lie.
I didn't want to steal.

I didn't want to be grumpy.
So I asked the others...

Who wants to give me
some of their lunch?

Is it odd we didn't want
to share our food?

No, it's just that...

It's just that today
is Friday treat day.

We're allowed something
special from the bakery.

It only happens once a week.

On Fridays,
I bring chocolate biscuits.

On Fridays, I'm allowed to make
whatever sandwich I like.

So Atticus had asked us to share
on a difficult day of the week.

But he did share
his bucket of chicken.

And I felt a bit sorry for him
because I think he missed his mum.

So we shared our Friday food.

I got half a finger bun,
a sausage roll,

a chocolate biscuit, a pizza slice,
a party pie

and a ham and honey sandwich.
That was Rory's.

I'm only allowed ham and honey
on Friday,

because my mum says it's too weird
for the rest of the week.

It is a BIT weird.

Do you have bacon and maple syrup?
Yes.

Do you have pork chops
and apple sauce? Yes.

Do you have ham and honey?

He makes a good point.

I couldn't believe it.
I had all this food.

Normal food!
Except for Rory's sandwich.

I was so excited, I didn't know
what to choose first.

Atticus! You forgot your lunch box.

Your grandmother
just dropped it off.

Suddenly, I had no time to choose.

I just had to eat before the other
guys asked for their food back.

That's not all she dropped off.

You know those nightmares

where you want to run,
but your legs don't move

and you want to scream,
but you can't make a noise

and it's like you're frozen?

This was ten times worse than that.

Your grandmother
brought in food for everyone.

What a lovely, generous thing to do.

It was one thing
for ME not to like Ya-Ya's food.

But I didn't want everyone else
not to like Ya-Ya's food.

I didn't want them
to be mean to Ya-Ya.

I had to stop them.

Mrs Gonsha!
You can't let them eat that!

Because it's disgusting?

Because Ya-Ya doesn't know
about allergies. There might be nuts!

She told me the ingredients.

Ooh, now let's dig in, everybody!

The foil was off the trays. Everyone
could see what was underneath.

I don't know what it was.

I don't know how to describe it.
I'd never seen anything like it.

It was like... mushed up meat
wrapped in leaves pastry.

What's that sauce?

What's that meat?
What's that smell?

I don't know,
but it is delicious!

I didn't believe Rory
when he said it was delicious.

He likes ham and honey sandwiches.

He's eaten soap.

And once I saw him try to chew
a brick. But...

..it wasn't just Rory -
everyone was eating it.

Yum! This is SO good.
Isn't it, Mrs Gonsha?

Your ya-ya is a very,
VERY special woman. I love her.

And they liked it.

The thing is, I'd never actually
tried any of Ya-Ya's food.

I thought I didn't like it because
I didn't like the look of it.

getting your Ya-Ya's food all week?

But... it wasn't disgusting.

It was sort of tasty.

It was sweet and spicy and tangy.

It was actually super delicious.
And...

..it was all gone.

AND Atticus's yo-yo's
meaty leaf wraps.

I think today was the best day
of my life.

I'd wasted so much time
not wanting to eat Ya-Ya's food.

And now all I wanted to do
was eat Ya-Ya's food.

And there was none left!

Did we mention Atticus
has been acting strangely?

Atticus!

If you're still hungry,
you have plenty of other food.

Suddenly I didn't want the finger bun
or the pizza or the sausage roll.

I didn't want any of the normal food.

No! Your lunch box, silly!

I'd totally forgotten that
Ya-Ya had brought in my lunch box!

Yes! I got more meaty wraps!

Because Atticus found
more meaty wraps in his lunch box,

he didn't want
his honey and ham sandwich,

his pizza, his finger bun,
his sausage roll,

his party pie or chocolate biscuit.

But Rory did.

I think today was the worst day
of my life.

Battie, get the stretcher
from sick bay.

I can't wait for mum and dad
to come home tonight, but...

..I think I'll ask
if Ya-Ya can stay the weekend.

I'm very good on the monkey bars.

Sometimes people think they're really
good at something, but they're not.

Like Debra-Jo
can't actually do ballet.

But Tamara really is very good
at the monkey bars.

It's really cool,
she swings upside down -

And crumpets.

Crumpets?
Yeah, like this.

Krumps. Not crumpets.

I'm pretty sure it's crumpets.

Crumpets are what you have
for breakfast.

I have cereal for breakfast.

Yesterday, Tamara was on the monkey
bars doing all her best tricks.

Not tricks - drills.

I'm in training.

When she's doing her tricks,
she hates being interrupted.

I was doing twosies, where
you swing from one side to the other

grabbing every second bar.
And I was doing threesies -

where you swing one side to
the other grabbing every third bar.

I was about to do foursies where
you swing and grab every fourth bar.

Did I mention Tamara
doesn't like being interrupted?

Get off, Melanie.
It's my turn on the monkey bars.

Once, my glider flew into
our neighbour's backyard.

He had a really scary dog
who had to be chained up

and that really scary dog
had my glider in his mouth.

I never got my glider back because
the dog kept looking at me like this.

Which is exactly how Tamara
looked at Melanie.

Sometimes you have to stand up
for what you think is right.

And also, sometimes
Tamara is really, really annoying.

But you never let anyone else
have a turn.

You think you own the monkey bars.

Tamara definitely thinks
she owns the monkey bars.

I thought she owned the monkey bars.

I don't think I own the monkey bars.

I don't know why anybody
would say that.

Get off my monkey bars.

Um, did Tamara's dad
buy the monkey bars at a shop

and bring them to the playground
just for Tamara to play with?

The answer is no, by the way -
he didn't.

Tamara gives you the stink eye
when you get on the monkey bars.

She looks at you
with this squished-up face

like she just sucked on a lemon.

I know, because once I sucked on
an old lemon. Then I threw up.

He actually did.
I actually did.

I was at his house -
they've got a lemon tree.

There were rotten lemons
on the ground.

I said, 'Do you dare me
to suck on this old lemon?'

I said, 'No. That would
make you sick. Don't do it, Rory.'

Probably should have
listened to him.

Tamara can get super cross.

But Melanie can get super stubborn.

Tamara can get super stubborn too.

I think that's why
they're good friends.

I wouldn't say I'm scared of girls
when they fight.

I would say that I'm VERY scared
of girls when they fight.

I can hang here all day
if I have to.

I can also hang here all day
if I have to.

Actually, I knew I couldn't
hang there all day

because I had swimming lessons
that afternoon

and I'd already missed a week
when I had conjunctivitis.

But Tamara didn't know that.
About the swimming lesson, I mean.

She knew about the conjunctivitis

because I got it from her
when I had a sleepover at her house.

OK then. Let's hang.

Tamara looks so comfortable
hanging off the monkey bars.

She may as well be sitting
in a beanbag.

Melanie never looks comfortable.

She looks like she's hanging off
the side of a mountain

being chased by criminals.

I had to hang on like that
because...

..the only think I can do on the
monkey bars is hang on like that.

I never get to practice anything
else 'cause Tamara never lets me on!

I'm glad it wasn't me hanging
off there so close to each other

because one,
I don't have very strong arms

and two, I had garlic prawns
the night before

and I had very stinky breath.

If Tamara had to go to the jungle

because just say her family
was moving for her mum's work,

she would definitely be able
to make friends with the monkeys.

What does Tamara's mum do?
I don't know.

What jobs are there in the jungle?
I don't know.

Then why is her work moving?
I don't know!

I was just trying to say
that she's like a monkey, OK?!

OK.

Because honestly,
unless you're a ranger,

I don't think there's ANY jobs
in the jungle.

Melanie was pretty good
at being able to hold on so long,

but I'm only saying that
to be nice -

I could see
she was starting to crack.

Mrs Gonsha!
Melanie, you alright there?

You look a bit red in the face.

Tamara won't let me have a go
on the monkey bars.

No, Melanie won't let ME
have a turn on the monkey bars.

Well, it looks to me
like you're both on the monkey bars.

Isn't that terrific?

But Mrs Gonsha, Tamara always
gets to play on the monkey bars.

She won't do what I say.

What have we learnt in class
about negotiating with each other?

Actually, we were learning that
negotiating doesn't always work.

there is the United Nations.

I don't think Mrs Gonsha
felt like being the United Nations.

But Mrs Gonsha!

Melanie's face was red
and her eyes were puffy

and she had sweat
dripping off her hair.

She looked like my mam does
after having a run -

'I need to take a lie-down
on the bed.'

I was hurting all over,
but I wasn't gonna let go.

Nothing was going to make me let go.

Almost nothing.

I could feel something in my pocket.

She was looking for her hankie.

Melanie LOVES her hankie.

I don't LOVE my hankie.

I just like having it with me
everywhere, all time, 24/7.

But anyway, it wasn't my hankie
I could feel in my pocket.

It was something hard
and my pocket was dangly.

Then I suddenly remembered -
it was money!

For the sausage sizzle!

Mr Haliotis, the PE teacher,
was helping us run a sausage sizzle

to raise money to buy
new cricket nets.

Nearly all the boys
were doing the sausage sizzle.

And one girl.

You gave me $5,
so that's how much in change?

Remember, the sausage is $2.50,
so how much do I have to give you?

I don't really care
about cricket nets,

but I do care about
a maths learning opportunity.

I'd completely forgotten
about the sausage sizzle.

That's why Mrs Gonsha smelt
so delicious when she came over!

Melanie, are you alright there?

Your face looks a bit red.

She was eating a sausage!

That's why she was in a hurry
to leave - she wanted another one!

That's when I noticed that there
was hardly anyone on the equipment.

Tamara and I were practically the
only ones not at the sausage sizzle.

Everybody wanted a sausage.

Everybody wanted a sausage,
but no-one was getting one

because Debra-Jo
was making everyone do sums.

But if I tell you the answer,
you'll never learn.

I started to get worried
that all the sausages

and delicious white bread and
yummy tomato sauce would be gone

and I would have remembered
to bring my gold coins for nothing.

Need your special hankie, Melanie?
No.

Then why do you keep looking down
at your pocket?

I don't.

It was good that Tamara
was being mean about my hankie -

it meant she didn't know
I was thinking about my money.

It meant she'd forgotten
about the sausage sizzle too.

I wasn't trying to be mean
to Melanie, asking about her hankie.

OK, maybe I was trying to be
a little bit mean.

I didn't want Tamara
to remember the sausage sizzle

because then she'd run and get one
before me.

I had two choices - I could either
stay on the monkey bars,

remind Tamara of the sausage sizzle
so she'd leave, win the fight.

Or I could get off the monkey bars,

not remind about Tamara about
the sausage sizzle, lose the fight.

Why don't you pull out your hankie?
Can't you hang on with one hand?

I told myself,
'You are strong and awesome.'

I did NOT want to lose the fight.

Suddenly I didn't care
about the sausages

and delicious white bread
and yummy tomato sauce.

All I cared about
was staying on the monkey bars.

I made up my mind to hang on.

And as soon as I made up my mind
to hang on...

..I fell off.

You OK?
Yes.

I had used up so much energy
hanging on the monkey bars

that now I couldn't move.

I felt sorry for Melanie lying
under the monkey bars like that.

I was going to ask
if she wanted to get back up

when I heard Mr Haliotis yell...

Debra-Jo, this is not a maths lesson!

This is a sausage sizzle!
Sausages!

I had totally forgotten
that there was a sausage sizzle.

I had lost the fight.
I was too tired to get a sausage.

My mum says I can be dramatic,

but I was pretty sure
my shoulders were broken

and my arms were never
gonna work again.

I was wondering if I could learn
how to write with my feet when...

I got you a sausage. We forgot
it was sausage sizzle today.

Sometimes Tamara
is really, really annoying.

Sometimes she acts
like she owns the monkey bars.

Sometimes she's really, really nice.
