I feel like it keeps

NARRATOR: Lisa faces disaster.

Winnipeg, Canada.

Morning.

- How's it going, buddy?
- Good.

How are you?
- Getting on.

Good.

Thanks for coming
up so early here.

NARRATOR: Hugh
Roland and Rick Yemm

load up a set of fuel tanks
bound for the remote outpost

of St. Theresa.

Churn and burn.

We got 19 we gotta deliver.

So you guys get up there
as fast as you can.

We're trying to get morediesel tanks to the communities

so they can store up.

The more diesel fuel they can
save up during the ice roads,

the better situation they
are come December, November

when they're waiting for
the roads to open up.

NARRATOR: The daring duo justfinished an exhausting run that

pushed Rick over the edge.

Hey you mother [bleep] you
ever [bleep] slam my [bleep]

my truck like that again,
I'll [bleep] kill you.

Don't be [bleep] taking it
out on my [bleep] truck.

NARRATOR: But hauling these
fuel tanks means big money,

and Rick's gotten a second wind.

It's been a bit of
a struggle, this one.

This whole season with
the-- of doing it and stuff.

And I've actually been
doing really well with them.

Like, I'm making a
lot of money here.

Loads are really starting
to come in quick now,

so we're just gonna
have to pick it up.

And when I go home and
I'm completely beat,

I'll know I did
everything I could.

If I go home and I
still got energy,

I didn't work hard enough.

MARK KOHAYKEWYCH:
Hugh, you're good?

You betcha.

[horn honking]

HUGH: We're getting
under way here.

It's pretty slick out there,
but we got a few hills there.

We've got Underwear Hill
we're gonna have to have

to deal with today there.

There's a whole bunch of fresh
underwear on Underwear Hill.

RICK [ON RADIO]: Yup.

HUGH: Even some panties.

RICK [ON RADIO]:
Wait, some panties?

NARRATOR: They head into
a section of hairpin turns

that Rick is all
too familiar with.

RICK: That's-- that's my corner.

That's where I rubbed the
siding off the shack there.

HUGH [ON RADIO]: What
the [bleep] hell?

Ricky, Ricky, Ricky.

RICK: This is the-- the
technical part of the rally

course.

Like, you've just gotta beright on your toes all the time.

Spinning out.

Holy [bleep].

I couldn't stop
here if I wanted to.

Pretty slick out
there right now.

The sun's up, and
it's a beautiful day.

We've gotta test our skills
going around these corners.

Well, with all
the truck traffic,

it polishes these
roads up pretty good.

Come on.

She's greasy in the corners.

We've got a couple of good
kick outs with the old tractor

there.

You can get a guy in a
corner, and you're sliding,

and he's sliding.

It's not like you can
hit the breaks and stop.

You're gonna hit each other.

So it's, uh-- two big
trucks hitting each other

is never a good thing.

Lots of carnage
when that happens.

Watch out.

Uh-uh.

NARRATOR: While Hugh and
Rick brave the slick roads

of Canada, in Fairbanks,
Alaska, Lisa Kelly

reports for a
challenge of her own.

MARK BERTELSON: Well, I hope yougot your supplies replenished,

because we got plenty
of trucking to do.

LISA: Oh, yeah.

I'm ready to go trucking.

Today you have a
little long pipe.

OK.

MARK BERTELSON:
Have fun with it.

Oh, I'll be fine.

I'll just go slow and easy.

NARRATOR: They don't call
it long pipe for nothing.

These massive pipes that
connect the oil fields

to the Alaskan pipeline are
one of the longest loads

to hit the haul road.

LISA: There's my
long pipe right here.

These are about 90 feet--

80, 90 feet.

I'm 100 feet total,
bumper-to-bumper.

One of the challenges of
hauling this long pipe

is that it's so long.

It doesn't take
corners very well.

This pipe sits on this dolly.

It's a pipe dolly.

And there's no trailer.

So the pipe basically
is my trailer.

19 and Carlile?

OK, that works.

NARRATOR: Lisa will rely on
pilot car driver Christine

Dennis to help get her 100-footload up the road safely.

All right.

I'm gonna get my
log book in shape,

and then we are ready
to roll at 8:00.

So--
CHRISTINE DENNIS: All right.

All right.

[music playing]

The pipe's so long I need to
use my fish eye mirrors today.

I'm just starting to get
used to how this thing works.

It may be a little bit easier.

CHRISTINE DENNIS [ON
RADIO]: All right.

You have traffic coming
by on your right.

LISA: Getting out of
town wasn't as bad

as I thought it was gonna be.

It's all about your pilot car.

10-4.

24 mile.

I'm about ready to go around
this 35-mile-an-hour corner.

CHRISTINE DENNIS
[ON RADIO]: 10-4.

It's all clear for you.

I'm going through
this next 35, and I'll

let you know if it's clear.

I've always wanted to
haul pipe on a pipe dolly.

So it's kind of one of those
dreams come true things.

It always feels good to check
stuff off the checklist.

NARRATOR: But just a
few miles into the trip,

Lisa's pipe dolly is swinging
out into the other lane.

LISA: Does it look like
I'm driving sideways?

CHRISTINE DENNIS [ON RADIO]:
Yeah, just a little bit.

Yeah, this thing tracks
so bad to the driver's side.

So, like, when I'm,
like, in the middle here,

my trailer's in the other lane.

CHRISTINE DENNIS
[ON RADIO]: 10-4.

It, like, keeps
moving around on me.

I'm gonna need the whole--

the whole road.

I can't be meeting anyone,
like, in these 35-mile-an-hour

corners we got here.

NARRATOR: With a pipe dolly
crossing the center line

on every turn, Lisa's worried
that her extra long load could

smash into an oncoming truck.

If a corner ain't wide enoughand I meet someone in a corner,

my, uh, back of the
trailer's gonna hit them.

Shoot.

[honking]

Whoa!

[gasps]

NARRATOR: 50 miles north
of Fairbanks, Alaska--

Shoot.

[honking]

Whoa!

[gasps]

Holy crap.

Damn.

I'm definitely gonna stick to
my side, though, just in case,

you know?

NARRATOR: With a pipe dolly
swinging out of control,

Lisa pulls over to try to
bring the 100-foot load back

into alignment.

I think what I'm gonna
try to do is loosen

the straps on the back.

I was just gonna try to, like,jackknife into it a little bit.

I'm trying to point the truck in
the same direction the dolly's

pointing and then tightening it.

Because the way I had it, it's
gonna be exactly where it was.

NARRATOR: Lisa's plan is to
loosen the straps on the pipe,

then realign the dolly.

LISA: I'll give it a shot.

NARRATOR: But the
load doesn't budge.

LISA: Oh, it's making it
more crooked than ever.

This is not working.

'Cause that right there is
exactly how I don't want it.

Doesn't even make sense.

I don't get it.

It's not doing anything, no
matter how I move this thing.

I just-- I really don't know.

But I don't know what
else to do about it.

You haven't pushed
anybody off the road yet,

so we're doing good.

NARRATOR: With a
load still aligned,

Lisa decides to roll the
dice and keep driving.

LISA: All right.

We'll give it a shot.

NARRATOR: And Lisa needs all
the good luck she can get.

LISA: Come here.

I'm saving that for him.

at the Coldfoot truck stop.

Yeah, we're gonna get
this back haul delivered

to Fairbanks.

And, uh, looks like everybodyhad to bobtail down here today.

Yeah, that's Tony and
Maya sitting over there.

Yeah, that's pretty funny that
I was the first one up there

and got a load, and, you know,
they had to bobtail back.

NARRATOR: Yesterday, Davebroke a basic rule of the road,

ditching his convoy partners
halfway through the run.

We're just gonna worry about
ourselves today, get the hell

out of here, get our butts downto Fairbanks, get another load

and get moving again, try to
put a dent in this load count.

I'm not gonna wave at him.

Just gonna drive on by.

Truck drivers are
supposed to stick together.

They're supposed
to work together.

They're supposed to
respect each other.

There was a total
lack of respect

when he was following me.

I'm not gonna do any
more with this Dave guy.

I'm not gonna do it.

NARRATOR: Dave may have
claimed the only back haul,

but Tony and Maya have
hustled up a job of their own.

We got some long
pipe to pick up,

and I know there's a load
of reels sitting there too.

What do you think about grabbingthose and going back north?

Yeah, sounds good.
I'm ready to go.

NARRATOR: While Tony
and Maya roll north--

[horn honking]

--Dave's back haul has
already hit a snag.

Damn it.

The truck is just real
sluggish on the hills.

It just don't want to pull.

And I've got a boost
gauge that, uh,

tells me how much turbo
pressure I'm putting out.

It's just not
putting out nothing,

or it's spooling up so slow.

I mean, that thing
should come up quick,

and it's not coming up at all.

NARRATOR: When Dave
hits the turbo boost,

the engine doesn't respond.

Next pull-out, I'm gonna
stop and check the fuel,

and make sure I got
fuel in the tanks.

And I checked it this morning,
but that was a couple hours

ago, so we're gonna stop
and look at some things

and make sure-- see, it's
just dead right there.

Absolutely [bleep] dead.

Like we're out of fuel again.

[bleep] Damn it.

That's it.

We just died.

Oh, this piece [bleep]
just died again.

[bleep] See, this
[bleep] tank is full.

We absolutely can't
be sitting here.

This [bleep] hunk
of [bleep] truck.

So [bleep] sick of this thing.

This fuel tank is dry again.

NARRATOR: Dave's truck is only
pulling from the driver's side

fuel tank.

He's still got a full
tank on the other side,

but the truck's acting
like it's out of gas.

When it won't draw
from both tanks,

it draws from the closest tank.

And it drew that
son of [bleep] dry.

It won't take anything
out of this one.

NARRATOR: And with his
former convoy partners headed

in the other direction,
Dave is on his own.

[bleep] hunk of [bleep].

Will not pull from my driver's
side tank for some reason.

I'm on an uphill
this time, and I

can't bump it to
get it going, so I

have to rely on the
batteries to start it.

And hopefully, I can get
this piece of [bleep] started

in a couple of minutes.

NARRATOR: Back on that
slick Canadian ice.

Woo-hoo!

NARRATOR: Hugh and Rick are
struggling to keep their rigs

on the road, and their 25-ton
fuel tanks on their trailers.

Pretty [bleep] rough.

And it's slippery.

Every trip, I'm getting a littlestiffer and a little stiffer

and a little stiffer.

Yeah, 10-4.

Unfortunately, I
can't go into the shop

and get patched up
like the truck can.

It'd be good if a guy could.

I could use a
new neck right now.

She's been kicking
out on me all day here,

so I know she's slicker thansnot on a chicken's lip, that's

for sure.

NARRATOR: They're
making great time.

But just around
the next corner--

MAN [ON RADIO]: Are you
guys northbound here?

10-4.

MAN [ON RADIO]: Yeah, we've gota truck jackknifed on the hill

over here, a tanker.

NARRATOR: An 8,500-gallon
tanker has spun out,

blocking traffic
in both directions.

RICK: I'll have to
get a grader in, which

can take who knows how long.

Who knows where the
grader is up here?

We could be sitting here
for an awful long time.

Could be 3 hours.

Could be 12 hours.

Could be 24 hours.

This is bush driving.

This is what happens.

[music playing]

I can pull him over.

MAN [ON RADIO]: OK.

Just come up and have a look
and see what you can do.

NARRATOR: With a spun-out tankerbetween him and his paycheck,

the polar bear takes
matters into his own hands.

This you?

She's slick.

I can probably
pull you straight.

Straighten me out.

Then I could back down the hill.

Yeah.

That might be the best.

HUGH: Well, I'm gonna
pull it backwards.

I think that'll make it.

Take the trailer breaks off
and leave the truck breaks on.

Well, I hope he's
getting him out.

I just see the back
of Hugh's trailer.

I don't know if he
pulled him down or not.

[bleep] cool.

Yeah, he got him.

Good deal.

HUGH: Hey, you betcha.

No problem.

Looks like we, uh, left
the road open anyway.

[horn honking]

Get after her.

All people come around
these corners and they panic

and they hit the brakes.

That's the worst thing you do.

NARRATOR: Hugh and Rick
are back on the road,

but they're not out
of the woods yet.

Just wait after this.

Come on right here.

HUGH: Uh-oh.

You [bleep].

[honking]

NARRATOR: Deep in the
Canadian wilderness.

Uh-oh.

[bleep]

Holy [bleep].

That guy [bleep] near
took me right out.

If I went in for the snow
bank, he'd have [bleep]..

He was completely jackknifed
coming around that corner.

[bleep] He passed my tank.

He was about three inches
away from my [bleep] tank.

By the time we got
straightened out there,

he was jackknifed coming
around the corner.

And I-- I was making
a straight run for it,

so I just took the snowbank.

I saved it.

If he'd hit the brakes,
he'd have took my tank out.

These roads are, uh, some of thetoughest winter roads in North

America here, and
they're-- they're rough

and they're tough.

I tell you, they're
harder than iron, and--

yeah, there's a knack
to driving them.

And it's only gonna get worse.

NARRATOR: Back on the Dalton.

Lisa Kelly's
100-foot load of pipe

has been nothing but trouble.

I've been trying to fix it.

And I had it.

I think I'm gonna try
it again at Coldfoot.

I imagine that would
be hard on tires.

I'm dragging it this way.

is wearing on Lisa's nerves.

trucker offers a suggestion.

They are adjustable.

How-- how do you do that?

MAN [ON RADIO]: That mack's
strapped up, and jockey

the dolly around a little bit.

Do it on flat ground.

OK.

Maybe I'll give it a shot.

MAN [ON RADIO]: OK.

LISA: Yeah, it's just getting
worse and worse and worse.

It's like, what if all
the pipe falls off?

Then I'm [bleep].

I don't know how it
could be getting worse.

NARRATOR: Lisa limps into
Coldfoot to take another crack

at straightening out her load.

Look at it, it's right here.

That's how far off it is.

It's because you can see howthese tires are going this way.

They almost look
off from each other.

NARRATOR: Stumped, Lisa
turns to her fellow drivers.

Did you say that you
felt like helping me?

Yeah.

'Cause all I'm doing is just
running the portables over.

I'll check it out, man.

He's gonna trying to pull my
dolly straight for me 'cause

I'm having a problem with it.

You can probably
just pull forward

until you think it's straight.

- OK, I'll give that a try.
- I'll just set my breaks.

It looks-- it looks--

just a little bit.

Maybe it'll tighten them
up, and then you can let.

Those portables

pretty straight to me, Lisa.

In the parking lot
it looked straight.

MAN [ON RADIO]: Yeah,

LISA: It's gonna be
hard to tell unless--

until I'm going down the road.

But I'm just hoping I don't
have to keep doing this.

Northbound long pipe
out of Coldfoot.

She'll be able to go
down the road straight now

without anybody yelling at her.

make fun of me anymore.

NARRATOR: 2,600 miles east--

NARRATOR: Alex is
heading back to Winnipeg

after another successful run.

ALEX: Hang on, there.

The wheels will fall off.

NARRATOR: Like Hugh and
Rick, he's also doing battle

with the slick Canadian roads.

ALEX: Snow's damp.

Like it's-- it's
warm, getting warm.

And, uh, so when you driveover, it starts releasing water

and immediately
get's very slippery.

[honking]

Holy mackerel.

Did I hit him?

ALEX [ON RADIO]: You OK?

NARRATOR: Deep in
the Canadian bush--

NARRATOR: Alex is on a collisioncourse with a parked car.

ALEX: Whoa, whoa,

Holy mackerel.

Did I hit him?

NARRATOR: On the
slippery winter roads,

Alex's trailer skidded
out of control.

Are you OK?

Holy [bleep].

Holy [bleep].

NARRATOR: And his camera
crew took the hit.

MAN [ON RADIO]: All good here.

[laughter]

Looks like the trailer got you.

MAN [ON RADIO]:
Oh, it got me good.

MAN: I thought you

There's a fire?

Just the exhaust.

Dude, we got lucky.

Broke my side mirror.

MAN: Look at the interior
with all the glass.

Got sideswiped by a [bleep]
trailer at about [bleep] 60.

MAN: Yeah.

OK, let's go catch up.

MAN: All right.

ALEX: Ay-yi-yi.

I can't believe that I did that.

NARRATOR: 180 miles
north, Hugh and Rick

are closing in on St. Theresa.

They're hoping to turn
and burn back to Winnipeg

in time to snag another
valuable fuel load.

But the last 10 miles into townare over a giant frozen lake.

What's this lake
called again, Hugh?

Seaman.

Seaman Lake.

Seaman Lake.

[laughter]

It's definitely starting
to warm up down there.

Just like a baby's ass out here.

You can't even steer.

RICK: You're, uh, driving
on thick ice right here,

but the snowbanks and beyond
hasn't been flooded or--

or built up to
take truck traffic.

So uh, go right through thecorner and end up off the road,

there's a good chance
you're gonna go through.

Making some good time.

I mean, I pulled a guy off
of the hill there spun out

in the tanker, pulled himstraight, got him out of there,

and we still made it up here.

People were saying it
was taking 16 hours.

Even hammered down, we
still made it up here

in about 12 hours we made it.

We're laughing.

NARRATOR: For the grateful
citizens of St. Theresa,

a crucial lifeline is restored.

This is for the community.

It's gas and, uh, fuel oil.

We don't have to go across
on the other island just

to get-- just to get gas.

NARRATOR: And for Hugh
and Rick, the fuel tankers

are money in the bank.

RICK: Now we're just
heading back into town

and get a load up
and get another one.

I think we got an
identical load to right

back to the same place,
which will be good.

Hopefully, we'll be back
tomorrow and go again.

So that's what I call
dashing for the cash.

Makes the season all worthwhile.

NARRATOR: Back in Alaska.

MAYA: Nope, nobody behind us.

NARRATOR: Tony and Maya havearrived at the abandoned loads.

A little bit of oil on there.

When it's really cold,
instead of using grease,

we'll use a little
bit of oil on these.

Feels good to get some
exercise after a few days.

All these rails are all
nice and chain tight.

TONY: Rock and roll.

Yeah, I think that
worked out really well.

We all got in there, got
hooked up really quickly,

just hightailed it out of there.

We're on our way.

It's a really busy
time right now, you know.

No time to just slow
down at all, you know.

Just gotta keep stuff moving.

NARRATOR: As Tony
and Maya head back

to Prudhoe to cash in on their
bonus loads, 150 miles south--

NARRATOR: Dave Redmond's back
haul is still stalled out.

Yeah, hopefully I got it--

the air worked out of it.

Now I've got to get this thingscrewed back down so we can get

the hell out of here.

NARRATOR: The truck
is only pulling fuel

from one of the tanks.

So Dave spent the last
hour manually pumping fuel

to the working tank.

This truck is wearing
on my last [bleep] nerve.

So tired of this truck.

I shouldn't have to keep,

I mean, this is just get
borderline ridiculous now.

NARRATOR: After a
frustrating back haul,

Dave finally reaches the Carlileheadquarters in Fairbanks.

Well, I made it back to
Fairbanks with my brand-new

trailer and my back haul.

So go ahead and
get this dropped.

I'll turn in my paperwork.

Yeah, I'm gonna drop my
truck off at the shop

and see if I can get
some things fixed on it

and maybe keep working tomorrow.

We'll just have
to see, you know?

It's just always
something with this thing.

NARRATOR: 100 miles

LISA: Yeah, this is definitely
one of those anything

can happen nights.

NARRATOR: Lisa's 100-foot
load of long pipe

is giving her all
she can handle.

LISA: This is gonna
be a long night.

We're not gonna be getting
there till really late.

MAN [ON RADIO]: Lisa.

Yeah, go ahead.

MAN [ON RADIO]: You need to finda spot to pull over rapidly,

safely.

Why?

MAN [ON RADIO]: You are
missing two rear duals.

NARRATOR: 100 miles south
of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska--

LISA: How did that happen?

MAN [ON RADIO]: I have no idea.

I'm just sitting here looking
at both of your bare hubs.

Well, we were
coming up on you here,

and I just saw that
something wasn't right.

Every freaking bolt.

NARRATOR: Luckily, fellow
trucker Carl Reynolds

spotted the missing tires beforethe entire axle collapsed.

Got a way to tie this thing.

I'm gonna--

You got a way to set--

I don't know.

How do you get it up?

You're gonna have to
put a strap from here.

A strap or a chain?

Or chain.

Well, we're gonna take
and jack this axle up.

LISA: This one's broke.

So that at least the
other side will ride level

and not create a situationwhere they burn the bearings up

on the other side and leave uswithout a rear axle whatsoever.

Man.

You don't think that's 'cause
it was crooked all day that it

wore it off.

NARRATOR: Driving 400 miles
with a crooked trailer finally

caught up with her.

I imagine it would
be hard on tires.

NARRATOR: But for
now, all Lisa can do

is try to lock down the
axle and hope for the best.

[laughter]

CARL REYNOLDS: Yeah, it makes menervous when they do that, too.
