into overdrive.

I always lied to him.

I'd tell him I had 15.

NARRATOR: The rookie and theold pro hit a storm head on.

And the upstart gets
the run of her life.

We are on the ocean right now.

[cracking]

NARRATOR: At the top of theworld, there's a job only a few

would dare.

[horn]

Just when you thoughtextreme trucking couldn't

get more dangerous, "Ice RoadTruckers" take on Alaska.

[theme music]

[ice breaking]

Ice road truckers are fiveweeks into a season of cold fury

through one of the harshestAlaskan winters on record.

Carlile Transportation hasdelivered more than 625

of the 2,000 loads destinedfor the Arctic oil fields.

And so far, they've avoidedthe roads' most-feared danger.

[crash]

In the Fairbanks yard
of Carlile Trucking,

Hugh "The Polar Bear" Rowlandis first in line at dispatch.

Hey, boss.

MAN: Hey, Hugh.
- How are you?

MAN: How we doing?
HUGH: Good.

MAN: Actually, I've got aload sitting right out there

on the counter for you.
HUGH: Right here.

Yeah, I think Phil's
going to be here shortly

to run up with you.

OK, so I can go hook on and--

You bet.

OK, man, thanks.

NARRATOR: Hugh hooks up withhis fifth load of the season.

[thud]

But as a new driver,
he can't roll out

without his escort Phil Kromm.

Phil's not here, and I'mloaded and ready to go.

And if I keep [bleep] around,Alex will catch up to me.

He's [bleep].

[bleep] around muchlonger, and he'll be back.

NARRATOR: Hugh and his
rival Alex Debogorski

have competed for decades.

HUGH: Alex is a wild man
at the end of the year.

He's a record-setter.

ALEX: [laughter]

NARRATOR: This season,
Hugh has managed

to get ahead by two loads.

The Polar Bear has
got the right of way.

Here we go.

NARRATOR: While Alex has beenplagued by mechanical trouble.

[splash]

We've had numerous
delays this trip.

This is just another one.

NARRATOR: But today,he's the very next driver

to walk into dispatch.

MAN: I've got you a loadof pipe because, you know,

you're getting good at that.

And consistency is what
we're all about here.

You're on the jack.

Great, thank you very much.

Have a good one.

NARRATOR: For Alex,
being able to haul

pipe is money in the bank.

Pipe is in demand for everythingfrom drilling oil to repairing

the 800-mile-long pipeline.

I'm just tightening
up all the straps.

NARRATOR: But it can alsobe the deadliest of loads.

A pipe that's not secured cansuddenly become a torpedo.

ALEX: It's loose.

And the truck stops willquick, it will come ahead

and cut the top off the truck.

And-- and somebody's
going to the trouble

of having a funeral.

So--

NARRATOR: Across the yard,Phil Kromm finally arrives.

As Carlile's safety
supervisor, he

was delayed at an
accident scene, his own.

Yeah, I backed into
one of these trucks

there and bumped her up.

So I got to go do
a report, and--

[laughter]

Certain-- certain
things I gotta do,

especially as the
safety man, you know?

[laughter]

Well, here's my
mistake today earlier,

trying to back around thistruck blind and looked

in it like in my mirror
that I had enough room.

Obviously, I didn't.

Um, it's a $1,000 mistake.

And, plus, I get to probablyhear about this for the next 10

years.

NARRATOR: The safety officernow gets the novel experience

of writing himself up.

PHIL: OK, description
of problem--

head in ass.

And solution-- get out andwalk around if you're not

sure about the available space.

Corrective action-- kick driverright square in the nuts.

ALEX: [inaudible],, are
you serious about Phil?

HUGH: [laughter]

Kind of funny, though, himbeing the safety instructor

and everything.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: While
Hugh waits for Phil,

Alex's convoy leader JackMcCahan is ready to go.

- Let's get on the road.
- Yes, sir.

Get making some of
that big Alaskan money.

That's right, some of
the good American money.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: Alex out of the yardgetting a jump on his arrival.

ALEX: Hughie is
still back in town,

because the fellow
he's going with

is getting their
pee tested, I guess.

Or tasted.

I'm not sure which.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: Every accidenttriggers an automatic urine

test for drugs and alcohol.

All right, it's
on the counter.

- All right, thanks, Phil.- Yep.

NARRATOR: Even if the
test comes up clean,

the penalties can be severe.

PHIL: Can be up to and
including termination.

You know, any time thingslike this happen, we take it

very seriously.

[music playing]

NARRATOR: Two hours
later, Hugh and Phil

finally get the OK to leave.

I'm glad it was [bleep] crashup there that did it, not me.

He's the instructor,
the safety guy,

so he won't live that downuntil I go home, you know?

[laughter]

NARRATOR: Hugh is 60 milesbehind his archrival.

But he's back in the chase.

HUGH: Me and Alex always hada friendly little rivalry

every year there, just alittle [bleep] game we play.

But I always lied to him.

He always thought he
was closer to me than--

than he was.

If I had 20 loads,
I'd tell him I had 15.

That would keep his
[bleep] spirits up.

And he'd think he was
running real hard on me.

[horn]

NARRATOR: Back in
the Carlile yard,

Lisa Kelly is also
strapping down pipe.

Got to go all the
way around with it.

NARRATOR: These giant 80-footsections connect the oil rigs

directly to the
Alaskan pipeline.

This is the longest
I've ever hauled.

NARRATOR: She's alsobooked for her longest run

yet on the ice road
of the Arctic Ocean.

I have to get this tieddown and get out of town.

NARRATOR: This trip
is a giant step

towards her goal of becomingone of the elite-- a heavy haul

driver.

TIM: I know she
wants the challenge.

She's willing to
take that challenge.

And I think she'd like to bethe first heavy haul woman

that we've got here at Carlile.

NARRATOR: But just when sheneeds extra time to load

up right, she doesn't get it.

LISA: I'm up against
the clock today

because I've got to get upby 4:00, which I don't think

is going to happen.

NARRATOR: Every rush hour,the streets of Fairbanks

are off limits to wide loads.

Lisa's only got 12 minutesto beat the curfew or else

she'll have to wait untilnightfall to depart.

[beep]

Her trailer wheels won't
budge, locked in place

by frozen brakes.

[beep]

It won't move.

NARRATOR: Lisa tries a
cold-weather shortcut

to thaw out her brake lines.

Pouring methanol in the lines.

That's the easy solution
is that they're frozen.

NARRATOR: But the quick fixdoesn't free the wheels.

Arrgh!

We tried.

NARRATOR: The last resort,getting under the truck.

I like being on
the ground anyway.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: And hammering awayat the ice and snow that's

built up on the rims.

There's like ice
all over these.

[hammering]

Oh, crappy.

NARRATOR: Two minutes leftto get out of the yard.

If she hasn't fixed
her truck, she'll

lose half a day's driving,worth about $1,000 with a load

this critical.

[beep]

With seconds to spare,
Lisa's on the move.

Bend me over and spank me.

[laughter]

Crack that whip.

Holy crap!

This thing is long.

Our problem is
going to be corners.

NARRATOR: It's tough enoughto make the 90-degree turns

of city streets.

LISA: Am I going to make this?

NARRATOR: Soon she'll be onthe extreme ice-covered curves

of the haul road,
and then ocean ice.

[crash]

It's going to be fun to haul.

NARRATOR: 130 miles
north on the Dalton,

rookie driver Tim Freemanand mechanic Jarid Lane

are on a recovery mission.

There it is
right there, Jarid.

JARID: It sure looks cold.

Yeah, poor little girl.

NARRATOR: On just his
third run of the season,

Tim broke down
for a second time.

TIM: This sucks.

GEORGE: I know it.

TIM: Jarid, this is
what we've got going on.

And the tensioner
pulley is junk.

NARRATOR: The tensioner
on the fan belt failed.

And the engine overheated,even at 40 below zero.

TIM: So we got the new tensionerpulley on now, put the belt

back on, see if she'll fire up.

Good deal.

Ready to roll.

NARRATOR: But just as they fixone problem, Tim finds another.

He's been the victim
of highway robbery.

Some [bleep]weedweed stole thetire chains off my truck.

Full set of
three-wheelers gone--

two-- and a full set of singles.

Somebody helped themselves.

NARRATOR: In his run of badluck, Tim's hit rock bottom.

Now he has to run barefootwithout chains down

the steep hills to Fairbanks.

TIM: Pretty steep slick hills.

This truck's cold.

The differentials are stiff.

So it's going to be a fightall the way back to town.

I'm going to stay
right behind him.

[music playing]

NARRATOR: Running theDalton is dangerous business

for a veteran with
the best of equipment.

For a rookie driver
with no chains,

the passage ahead is one
of white-knuckle fear.

TIM: [bleep] snow [inaudible].

[bleep] is jerking me
all over the place.

NARRATOR: 80 miles
north of Fairbanks,

rookie Tim Freeman isbarefooting back to town,

rolling on the ice
with no chains.

Truckers choose barefooting whendriving conditions are perfect.

But Tim has no choice.

Some [bleep]weedweed stole thetire chains off my truck.

NARRATOR: Now he'ssliding all over the ice.

TIM: See this is [bleep] hillhere because it's jerking me

all over the place.

[music playing]

[bleep]

NARRATOR: Tim
feathers the throttle

to regain traction justbefore going over the edge.

TIM: You don't want to
spin out on any hills.

You just want to make
it back to town safe.

NARRATOR: Tim races
back to Fairbanks

to catch up with his runningmate and mentor, George Spears.

George is loaded up andscheduled to leave in just four

hours.

But when Tim returns
to the garage,

they discover an electricalproblem with the starter.

The truck has to be fixed bythe time George is set to leave

or else Tim will have to waittwo more days for George's

return.

[beep]

[squeak]

GEORGE: He came here to work.

And he's in a position
where he needs to work.

And any time that his
truck is broke down,

it's been tough on him.

How much fuel is left in it?

There's fuel it it.

We want to get him back onthe road and get him some money.

NARRATOR: If the truck doesn'tstart running again soon,

Tim could be out of the game.

80 miles up the
Dalton, Alex Debogorski

is running with 28-year
veteran Jack McCahan.

Jack, you got a copy.

NARRATOR: They approach a grimlandmark named Chucky's Corner.

Jack, what's the scoop onthat Chucky's Corner there?

What happened to Chucky?

JACK: Oh, it happened
back in probably 1981.

And it killed him.

NARRATOR: By all
reports, the driver

was hauling a load of
pipe when he rolled.

One piece shook looseand killed him instantly.

[crash]

The many crosses on
the road honor the dead

and warn the living that this isNorth America's most dangerous

road.

ALEX: There's a lot morepeople died on this ice road

here, the Dalton Highway,
than on the combined ice

roads of Northern Canada.

NARRATOR: Alex clears
Chucky's Corner.

But eight miles up the roadlies his nemesis, Mackey Hill.

ALEX: I'm really excited.

Mackey Hill and me have hada couple of run-ins already.

NARRATOR: Mackey is agear-crushing, 16-degree grade

straight to the top.

ALEX: I missed a
couple of shifts

on this hill the very first tripand then had to stop and start

all over again in first gear.

[gear grinding]

Seemed that I had a trafficjam behind me because everybody

and their dog passed me.

I figured as long aspeople are laughing at me,

they don't have to
laugh at somebody else.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: Now at the baseof that slippery hill,

Alex tries to avoid strikingout for a third time.

If you make too
rough a shift, won't

be much torque in the tires.

If they spin once, thenquite often, you're done.

You don't get two chances

NARRATOR: One by one he hitsthe correct sequence of gears,

his 46,000-pound rigbarely clinging to the ice.

And, finally, rounding
the top of Mackey.

Alex is one more hillcloser to proving himself

to Alaskan truckers.

ALEX: There's a few of themthat are grumpy about Hughie

and I being here.

They're not happy to seeCanada's national treasure

on this road with them, two ofCanada's national treasures.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: 40 miles
behind Alex is

the other notorious Canadian,Hugh "The Polar Bear" Rowland.

I mean, I've been treatedreal good here by everybody.

But I know [bleep]
well behind their backs

they're saying them
[bleep] Canadians.

[laughter]

They don't know how todrive this road,them [bleep]

Canadians.

I'll hear it at the end.

What about the Polar Bear?

[laughter]

[horn]

NARRATOR: The Coldfoot truckstop lies 60 miles north

of the Arctic Circle.

[groan]

NARRATOR: After spending thenight at this remote outpost

and grabbing a hot meal,
Alex Debogorski gears up

for the run to Deadhorse.

Yeah, I'm just
doing a free trip,

look underneath the truck tosee if there's any oil dripping,

check the tires.

I had a flat tire lasttrip when I got to Prudhoe.

Checked the lights.

Oh, goodness grief.

Look at that.

We've got another
flat tire, looks like.

The tread is gone.

That one will have
to be replaced.

There's nothing left of it.

NARRATOR: The tire's
not only flat,

the entire tread layer,
or cap, has peeled off.

ALEX: Must've happened
the last 50 miles or so.

NARRATOR: On his last run,Alex had a flat in Deadhorse.

But here in Coldfoot,
there's no shop.

And spares are hard to come by.

JACK: Does Carlile have
any spare tires here?

Uh, just one last week.

JACK: A trucker did?

Yes, sir.

JACK: Well, we ain't
got none here, then.

NARRATOR: Getting a new tireto Coldfoot could take days.

And in that time Alex
has already lost,

his rival, Hugh Rowland,
has passed him by.

ALEX: So Hugh has gone ahead.

I guess everything is
going fine for him.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: The only other
option is to leave now,

flat tire or not.

Let's go.

Hopefully, we don't
wreck the other tire.

If one tire is flat, and allthe weight's on the other tire,

and the other tire is doingtoo much work, then it'll fail.

NARRATOR: 60 miles up ahead,Hugh is rolling up the Brooks

Range towards Atigun Passin a convoy with Phil Kromm.

Yeah, ole Philbilly, he'sa bit of a loose cannon.

I guess that he likes
to bend pumpers.

I figured you missed that one.

Ha, yeah.

HUGH: Somebody to travel with,and [bleep] on the radio,

and tell stories to each other.

And our lies get
bigger and bigger.

Put some miles on, that's themain thing, making some cash.

NARRATOR: After 30 years ofdriving Canadian ice roads,

Hugh is starting to pull
his weight in America.

HUGH [ON RADIO]: And I'vedrove quite a few of the ice

roads now, different roads.

And like them, like, I
think it's a great road.

So-- and everybody is
proud of this road.

So that's a good deal.

HUGH: And like, I gotreal bragging rights now.

I mean, I've been onthis road and them roads.

I mean, not too many
guys can say that.

I'm pretty proud of that myself.

NARRATOR: Now the road tiltsup to the roof of the Arctic.

4,700-foot Atigun Pass isthe northernmost winter road

in the world, with zigzaggingturns and sheer drops.

It's just claimed
another victim.

Yeah.

[music playing]

I hope we don't spin
out, crash, and burn.

That'd be [bleep] silly
after all that trash

that I've been through
with the Philbilly

there about bending the pumper.

NARRATOR: With even the localsspinning out on the ice,

Hugh shows some
real driving skill

and makes a clean
pass over the summit.

HUGH: One more trip over
the pass, no casualties.

NARRATOR: 250 miles southin Fairbanks, George Spears

and Tim Freeman are sweatinga deadline of 12:00 noon,

as mechanics troubleshoot yetanother problem with Tim's

truck.

[beep]

Not firing.

There's something to do withthe computer on that truck that

is not letting it
start properly.

NARRATOR: 11:15, 45
minutes to the deadline.

GEORGE: I've took this on,and I want to finish it.

I don't want to him to
miss out on this trip.

If I can take him
with me, I will.

And if not, then it's
hasta la vista, buddy.

I can't help it.

How long you going to be?

I don't know.

NARRATOR: Another
30 minutes pass

as Jarid Lane narrows theproblem to a computer sensor.

But time is almost up.

[crank sound]

TIM: After a couple hours ofscrewing around over there,

they figured out it was
an engine speed sensor.

We are ready, George,
right behind you.

NARRATOR: At the stroke of noon,the wheels are finally rolling.

Tim's run of bad luck mighthave broken another rookie.

But he still believes thathis fate lies on the Dalton.

TIM: I don't really
see anything that's

going to be more challengingthan the haul road of Prudhoe

Bay.

And I haven't come across ajob that's more rewarding.

My goal is just to get a truck,get comfortable, memorize

this road, make as
many trips as I can

until it's time to retire, man.

I mean, I'm here for--

I'm here for good.

Northbound on Two Mile.

Timmy, give me a holler whenyou get up on top there.

Let me know how you're doing.

All right, George.

That's going well so far.

All righty.

NARRATOR: Tim hits the
ice for the fourth time.

But he still has a long way togo to prove himself to George.

TIM: Every time he catchesme doing something I'm not

supposed to do or somethinglike that, you know, [inaudible]

Timmy, he says.

He's a good
driver and all that.

But, you know, I've
got 30 years up here.

He's got three trips.

NARRATOR: Just when Timstarts to get comfortable

on this run--

[bleep]

[bleep]

[bleep]

Tim just slid off
the hill back there

behind us a little bit.

Trying to go too slow, you know?

You can go too slow just
like going too fast.

It's not good.

It'll cause you to slide too.

NARRATOR: On every big
hill on the Dalton,

gear selection is critical.

Go too fast, and the tirescan't grab ahold of the ice.

Too slow, and the engine lugs,causing the wheels to drag

and often resulting
in a dangerous slide.

[crash]

GEORGE: All right, just pickit back up here a little bit.

We got to climb up Eight Mile.

Tim?

NARRATOR: Tim follows George'slead and picks up speed.

His wheels stop spinning.

GEORGE [ON RADIO]: How
we making her, Timmy?

Just fine.

You know, you might be wipinga little sweat off your brow

from the last mile behind you.

But, uh, you're still got to--

still got to stay in
tune and in focus to

what's happening
in front of you.

NARRATOR: 210 miles north isLisa Kelly doing one last load

check before heading
into the high mountains.

Tight on both sides.

I'm really, like, out to kickbutt and get this thing up

there safely, and efficiently,and without problems

so that they'll give me more.

[music playing]

NARRATOR: Her next big ascent--

the narrow passage cut
into the mountainside

called The Shelf, the sceneof many bad accidents.

LISA: Um, so far, thisyear's been crazy for wrecks,

because we've had a
truck flipped over

at the top of The Shelf.

The car carrier just
plowed in the ditch

at the top of The Shelf
a couple days after.

That's just the
wrecks that I've seen.

And they say it's not ifyou go in the ditch up here,

it's when.

NARRATOR: Lisa clears The Shelf.

Now, up to Atigun Pass.

I am at the bottom,
about ready to go up.

[music playing]

Gary, is it clear up thereso I can get to the top?

GARY [ON RADIO]: It'll beclear by the time you get here.

LISA: OK.

NARRATOR: With 80 feet oftrailer behind and solid ice

below, every turn
is an adventure.

LISA: Corners are really
interesting to get

around the corner,
because you're so long.

I don't want it to slidearound, because pipe can kill me

or anybody else because itslides easily, because it's

kind of torpedo shaped.

And so it likes to act like one.

Somebody once told me thatif you take a trailer,

and you tip it upside down,nothing should fall off.

That's how it
should be strapped.

NARRATOR: Lisa clears
the pass safely.

But tomorrow, she'll bedriving on a frozen ocean.

LISA: It's the farthest pointnorth that you can get by road.

And now I'm going
to go even further.

NARRATOR: 70 miles
from Coldfoot--

Yep, yep, yep,

NARRATOR: Alex Debogorski isattempting to climb Atigun Pass

with a bald and deflated tire.

My flat tire is still flat,hasn't fixed itself yet.

Probably stressed the guysout that are behind me.

Look here, he's going by.

He's in a rush.

Yeah, must be a fire truck.

He look-- did he look
like a fire truck?

[laughter]

NARRATOR: As he hits this steepdowngrade on the other side

of the pass, the
lack of traction

becomes a much more
dangerous hazard.

ALEX: Boy is that
slippery right there.

Woo!

You just go down
the hill faster.

NARRATOR: Alex tries to controlhis speed with the jake brake,

which uses engine compressionto slow the truck.

ALEX: I tend to try touse as much jake as I can

so I don't have to
use much brakes.

NARRATOR: Because any brakingcan cause the damaged tire

to spin out and send
him off the road.

ALEX: We're trying
to take it easy.

So we don't want to
wreck the other tire.

Hopefully, I don't have
to do any heroics today.

NARRATOR: Nursing the flat tireand feathering the jake brake,

Alex clears the pass.

The Canadian is holding
his own on this road.

But he's still behind
his rival, Hugh Rowland.

Alex.

ALEX: Why?

Is that way he's been talking?

I'm going to have to
get a bar of soap maybe.

[laughter]

NARRATOR: 100 miles aheadis Lisa Kelly, rolling

towards the biggest
moment of her career--

her longest run on the iceroad of the Arctic Ocean.

LISA: It is a beautiful morningout, especially when you're

surrounded by mountains
like we are right now.

And the sun coming over
the ones behind you.

NARRATOR: When there's a breakfrom the brutal winds that

prevail on the north slope,a trucker makes good time.

LISA: Because it's
flat and straight,

you can open her up a little.

Woo!

NARRATOR: Suddenly, she getsa glimpse of the original way

of hauling freight on the slope.

Oh, those are those
tundra crawlers.

That's so cool.

NARRATOR: Before the
Dalton opened in 1974,

the only way to movefreight across the tundra

was on overland trains.

They supplied the DEW line, orDistant Early Warning stations

that were built to alert theUS to incoming Soviet missiles.

PROFESSOR COLE: In
the early years,

it was the Letorneau snowtrain, this giant machine

with these huge wheelscrawling across the tundra.

NARRATOR: The snow trainrode on 7-foot tall tires,

hauled up to 150 tons, and couldoperate in 68 degrees below 0.

While the overland trains
of the '50s and '60s

took days to cross the NorthSlope, in good weather,

Lisa takes just five hours toreach the end of the Dalton.

Just getting into
Deadhorse here.

NARRATOR: But the load hasn'treached its final destination.

Tomorrow, she will risk it allon the ice of the Arctic Ocean.

[crack]

[music playing]

NARRATOR: 320 miles southof Deadhorse, the weather

begins to change
for Jim and George.

The winds are gusting
at 30 miles per hour.

And they hear that up
ahead, it's even worse.

NARRATOR: Next up,
the downhill stretch

that Tim's been
dreading the whole trip.

NARRATOR: The Beaver Slide--

it's as slippery as a skislope and 2 miles long.

[music playing]

NARRATOR: Tim's brakes
lock up and send

him skidding across the ice.

NARRATOR: Tim
carefully gears down

and regains control of his rig.

[horn]

NARRATOR: Tim and Georgebarrel ahead to Coldfoot,

where they learn that theweather has closed down Atigun

Pass.

TIM: They report
it's blowing tonight.

It'll be till noon beforethey get the pass open.

It'll be another
campout at Coldfoot.

Woo hoo!

NARRATOR: In far
northern Alaska,

the competition comesdown to its final moments.

The boys of NASCAR make200 laps to go 500 miles.

And we only have to make
one lap to go 500 miles.

NARRATOR: Alex Debogorski hasrun all the way up the Brooks

Range and across the NorthSlope with a huge handicap.

ALEX: Yeah.

We've got a flat tire here wecan try to nurse into Prudhoe.

NARRATOR: Now it's
all but certain

he'll make it to
the finish line.

Sweetness.

NARRATOR: But Alex was
forced to run slower.

And that's the difference inthe race with his archrival.

HUGH: That was a good run thismorning, made some good time.

NARRATOR: 35 miles ahead ofAlex is Hugh Rowland running

with Bill Kromm.

HUGH: Philbilly had thehammer down a couple of times.

She's time to pitter-patter,
we get at her,

and she said to [bleep]lollygag, we'll lollygag.

NARRATOR: After startingtwo hours later than Alex,

Hugh pulls into aDeadhorse one step ahead.

He wins this round
of bragging rights

as he delivers his fifth
load of this season.

Yeah, number five.

So we're here.

NARRATOR: He's two loads upon Alex, who's only now seeing

his destination on the horizon.

ALEX: So we're coming
to Prudhoe Bay.

It's overcast.

And it's pretty grey out.

Well, after three trips, it'sstarting to look familiar.

[music playing]

Ahead, the open ice.

LISA: And we're
about 60 miles north

of Deadhorse, me and thiswonderful 80-foot pipe.

We have been through
a lot together.

[chuckle]

So we got on pavement,
gravel, snow.

We've been all over the place.

[horn]

Now we're about toexperience ice, ocean ice.

NARRATOR: To get on
the ocean ice road,

she first has to clear
a 180-degree turn.

LISA: Oh, my gosh,
this corner is intense.

Well, other people have done it.

I can do it, right?

NARRATOR: Now she
leaves the land behind.

LISA: I'm on the ocean ice.

I kind of feel the waves.

[cracking]

NARRATOR: The wave-like motionis the weight of the truck

making the ice sag and stretch.

[cracking]

LISA: We are on the
ocean right now.

It's so intense, dude.

[cracking]

[music playing]

NARRATOR: Lisa keeps herspeed to 10 miles an hour.

Any faster, and she
can damage the ice

or even break through it.

[splash]

She creeps towards the oilfield.

LISA: We are on the
ocean right now.

Yeah, it's kind of
surprising to me

to see all this stuffsitting here on this ice.

I bet there's some
intense weight out here.

So I don't know how far
this thing's frozen.

[music playing]

[bubbling]

NARRATOR: Finally, Lisapulls into the finish line.

[music playing]

LISA: Here's Alaska.

We're right here above it.

We drove out on-- above Alaska.

Now we're just unstrapping this.

It's being stubborn.

I'm on the ice.

I'm happy to be here.

I'll be happier to leave.

[chuckle]
