Out here,
it's me versus nature.

On the Western Hemisphere's

northern frontier,

the race is on.

You're going into the bush.

It's you against Mother Nature.

Mother Nature is unpredictable.

narrator: And the most
ambitious company on the ice

roads is Muskie Creek.

My problem right
now is that we have

so much forecasted right
now and so many commitments.

I'm short on drivers.

We've got seven loads
to load tomorrow.

My name is Bill Danh.

And I'm the operations
manager here at Muskie Creek.

Apparently, there's an air
leak on the air tank.

Did anybody do
anything about it?

Our primary goal is to service
northern communities

via winter road access.

With about six weeks
of winter roads,

we have to slam these loads in
as quickly and as efficiently

as possible.

Some of the communities
that we go to,

their only source to get
food, building materials,

is by local roads.

It's crucial in that
short window that we have

we get as much freight
up into those communities

so that they can sustain
for the next year.

I'm Todd Dewey.

And I come from
a little town called

Port Angeles, Washington.

Sweet .

After spending five, six years
up here being on the ice road,

you know, it becomes
a part of you.

I got four beautiful
daughters at home.

And they were at that age
where they needed Dad around.

So I kind of took
a step back from the ice

roads a little bit.

The last nine years
of my life, I have really

focused on family, home.

Now that I'm an empty-nester
and the daughters are gone,

it's like the ice roads
have been calling me.

Todd, Todd.

I'm taking on this
challenge this year

because I have a chance
to actually make some money

and build a nest egg
back for me and my wife now

and buy my own big rig.

Muskie Creek, we have
a very good reputation.

Whatever we commit
to, we fulfill.

We don't leave a load behind.

So Garden Hill is where
your load is going to be going.

OK.

And then from there,
you're going to cross the ice.

Then you're going to travel
down here to St. Theresa Point.

That's going to be where I need
you to pick up the back-haul.

OK, you got it.

narrator: Todd's burning
800 miles to Garden Hill.

Then he's crossing Island
Lake to pick up his back-haul

in St. Theresa Point.

It's loaded.

It's ready, secured, just
need a load of screw piles.

They go into the ground.

You can't start the building
until those are in, right?

There's a housing
shortage in Garden Hill.

So all loads, materials,
it's all critical.

Gotcha, 10-4.

My biggest
concern is that he

may have lost his edge.

I really can't afford
any mistakes to happen.

You know, I'm coming
up here with a super set

of skills that not a lot of
guys have.

I'm 51 years old.

I don't know if I've
got what it takes

anymore to do these roads.

But I'm going to hit it hard.

And I'm going to see if I can
make myself some good coin.

Am I nervous?

Absolutely.

See if an old man's
still got what

it takes to get the job done.

narrator: 600 frozen
miles to the north--

I am kind
of nervous to see what we--

what we find.

narrator: Shaun Harris,
owner of Harris and

Sons Transportation,
is checking the ice

thickness on Wollaston Lake to
see if it's safe for big rigs.

We're going
to drill a hole or two

and then check the thickness
and know how long

before we're going to be
able to go across that

crossing with large loads.

narrator: The Wollaston
Lake community is only

accessible by boat
or a 25-mile ice road

when the lake freezes.

They've had so much snow
into Wollaston,

it ended up insulating the ice.

The ice would not thicken up.

It wouldn't form properly.

We're way behind
on getting the roads

ready to go for our heavy
loads to cross them.

My name is Shaun Harris,
and I'm 51 years old.

And I own a trucking business

in Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan.

When I started this
business, I called it

Harris Logging and Transport.

Years down the road
when the boys got involved,

I changed it
to Shaun Harris and Sons.

At the age of 17, 18,
I went and got my license.

And right out of trucking
school, within three days,

I was on the ice roads
in northern Saskatchewan.

And it was trial by fire.

So this is my 32nd
winter on the ice road.

At this point now,
we have 12 trucks.

My company will take jobs that
other people wouldn't touch

with a 10-foot pole.

I've hauled some of the
biggest recorded loads

across the ice.

The Wollaston run is very
dangerous, because the water

is always moving there.

That's generally where
the thinnest ice is.

We're hoping today,
when we punch through,

we have over 20 inches.

Optimum is 33 to 38 inches
to haul

what we haul on here.

First and foremost,
you're looking for thickness

to see how much ice there is.

Then you want to look
at the quality of the ice.

You want it to kind of have
a nice, clear look to it.

This doesn't look like it's--

it's rotten
or anything at the top.

Find the bottom
of the ice right there.

18, give or take.

We're in trouble.

We may not get
in here this winter.

It's always a stress.

Business-wise,
I think the biggest stress

is just the communities.

When they can't get their stuff
in there, they suffer.

They're out of fuel right now.

They're flying fuel in because
they can't get across here

when normally, we'd be hauling
across here weeks ago.

We're running out of time.

narrator: Back at Muskie
Creek, another ice road

veteran is joining the team.

Lisa,
finally nice to meet you.

You guys are, like,
top dogs in town.

You got, like, the most
trucks, the most loads.

We're at 32 trucks, pounding
about 500 loads per year.

For, like, the last decade,

I've been still trucking
on the ice roads.

But I bought my own truck.

And I started my own business.

Whoa!

Well, that was interesting.

Freezing wind,
endless miles, and jobs

that no one else will take.

Oh, I can't--I mean--

oh, .
I'm going to jackknife.

Oh, my gosh.

I got a farm
in Wasilla in Alaska

with 2 acres
and 11 horses on it.

Can you move with me?

Yay, good girl.

Currently, my truck
is sitting broken

in the shop in Fairbanks.

And it's not running.

I need, like, a lot of money
really fast to get it going.

And these are
the hardest ice roads.

So I'm going to make
more on them.

And that's why I'm here.

The worst-case
scenario is if I don't

make the money
to fix the truck,

I'm going to have
to start selling horses.

Garden Hill is
where you're going to.

There's going to be
lots of hills to climb.

OK.

Most important question,
what am I driving?

running the 800-mile

gauntlet to the remote
community of Garden Hill.

I just can't afford to not
have the wheels turning.

narrator: Plunging deeper
into the frozen wilderness--

We got a lot
of miles to go today.

narrator:--Todd Dewey is
battling his first winter

road in almost a decade.

The road is
in rough, rough shape.

See, you can't see
like that right here.

There's a lot of pieces
on here, heavy items.

If they fall off,
there's no way

I'm going to manually
and physically put

them back on my load.

It's getting a lot
worse now, buddy.

You feel that right there?

Yeah, yeah, that's--
that's getting rough.

And I have definitely
got something going

on with my load in the back.

The drill bit is
sticking out about a foot

on the passenger side.

This is not good.

She is cold.

Well, this is screwed.

This wood beam had slid
out of here almost a foot.

Here's a better visual.

The wood has slid this far.

Half the problem is
that it's so cold

and the deck is so slick,
and these pieces of wood

are just sliding
right on the deck.

If it pushes too hard and
slides with too much momentum

and busts these straps,
that whole thing's just going

to slide right off the side.

And this whole pallet
of these drill bits

are out in the middle
of the ice road.

That's not good.

Well, I got an idea in my head.

I don't know if it'll work.

But it sure is worth a try.

Here it goes.

Whoa, you gotta love
the ice roads, right?

Now we can link these two
together so it's double-locked.

Pull the slack out.

Those are bound.

In theory, as I'm
backing the truck up,

that chain is going
to come tight.

And it's going to pull
that load on the trailer.

That's what I'm
hoping will happen.

Yuill's first haul

at a new company.

Back home,
he's an ice road veteran.

But in these parts,
he's a rookie.

Looking forward to working
with you this year.

Is there
something that you got to tell

me that I don't know, then?

I live in Yellowknife,
Northwest Territories.

I own a couple trucks.

I've been in business
now five years.

Trucking was a natural
calling for me.

For me, being out
on the road on a job,

it's a sense of accomplishment,
especially when you deliver

to Northern communities.

I also own
Harley's Hard Rock Saloon.

It's a bar in Yellowknife.

This is my bar.

It's a community waterhole.

A lot of the ice
truck drivers,

they will come to our bar.

They love it.

They have a great time.

My wife, Kelly,
and my daughter Morgan

both work at my bar.

And I have two daughters
in Nova Scotia, Bianca and Zoe.

And I'm praying for the best
for them all the time.

I really need this
season to go well

in order to provide the cash
to do the upgrades

up there at the bar.

I haven't been
in any of these ice roads.

So this is all new
territory for me.

kind of truck

special truck to Muskie Creek.

The driver that was
assigned this truck

serviced Muskie Creek
for a very long time.

Two years ago,
Irwin Friesen, we lost him.

Irwin Friesen was a big
part of Muskie Creek.

He is one of the biggest
reasons why Muskie Creek

is where we're at today.

He passed away
two years ago when

he was on duty doing a load.

Sounds like some
pretty big shoes to fill.

Well, I hope to make you proud.

And I'll be honored
to drive her.

I look forward
to working with you.

He's built a little bit
of confidence in me.

But talk is cheap.

narrator: Scooter's first
foray on these ice roads is

an 800-mile adventure
to the northern

community of Red Sucker Lake.

Well, now we're going
to check this load out,

see what we're working with,
making sure that nothing

is going to come off.

The key thing is
keeping your deck clean.

Imagine that, flying that
through your windshield.

That'll kill somebody.

And this here has to go.

narrator: Each driver is
responsible for securing

their load, confirming
it's safe and legal.

feet needs a pilot truck.

You can't haul this load.

He's not going to like this.

narrator: And none are
available anytime soon.

We got us a problem.

to the northwest--

I'm looking
for the crews that are flooding

to try and thicken the ice.

narrator:
- Shaun Harris is meeting

the ice road maintenance crew.

To build the road, the crew
spends weeks plowing snow and

checking the ice thickness.

Where the ice is thin, they
use lake water to thicken it.

The fate of Shaun's business
depends on their progress.

If the ice doesn't
get any thicker,

the community, they're
not going to be able

to get
supplies like that in.

This road is very vital.

It's the only lifeline in the
wintertime for this community.

How many holes are you
guys going to drill?

Two for now?

So what they're doing here
is, they've got thin spots

where it's only 17 inches.

So they drill holes.

And now we're going
to fire up the generator.

And we're going to start
flooding this section of ice

that's thin here, right?
- Yeah.

the boys are doing,

putting water on existing ice.

And they'll keep doing
that and doing that.

And they'll build levels.

And that's how we grow the ice.

until she reaches the edges?

can get the supplies
in that they need.

a pallet of foundation screws

That's getting rough.

fix is ice road ingenuity.

So this whole thing is now
slid right back into position.

Now I'm going to re-rig it.

being on the ice roads.

frozen river crossing.

I'm not sure where
the river begins here.

There's so much
snow on the ice.

I can't tell what condition
the ice is in right now.

If it's clear ice,
it's a better quality of ice

and holds more weight.

If it's, like, white ice,
there's more air in it.

So it's more likely to crack.

First one in a while, so I'm a
little nervous on it, you know?

We'll see.

Wow,

The best
strategy I have for the lake

crossing is listening
for the cracking.

I'm going to go with slower.

I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The ice is supposed to make
the cracking sounds.

But how much is too
much cracking, right?

Because it's got
to crack to fall through.

So there's got to be a certain
limit on cracking sounds.

"Thin ice" sign.

of fresh snow

the border between safety

and certain death.

It's like that whole section
is, like, open water.

What makes this
any thicker here?

stuck in the truck yard

so he can cross the lake
and pick up another

load by the end of the day.

We're going
to get this thing unloaded

and be right back
out on the ice roads.

I got to turn and burn.

I got another load
I got to get picked

up and delivered right away.

I don't know how this
is going to work.

We're about to find out.

The problem with unloading
this is the forklift

is not big enough
to move these pallets

off the back of this trailer.

We're going to grab
this whole pallet

and see if we can just
slide a whole pallet at one

time right onto the ground.

I guess we'll try that.

that we had.

Shaun Harris is
strategizing with his business

partners, sons Riley and Zach.

My boys,
they've both been driving

since they
were five years old, and

at 15 probably knew more than
guys who have been doing it

20 years.

narrator: They need
a plan to salvage

the season if the Wollaston
Lake crossing doesn't open.

I wish I could sit
in Mexico as much as you do.

Riley is a mini me.

And that's not
generally a good thing.

One day, when you have 32
years under your belts,

then you can go to Mexico, too.

I had that under
my belt before I was 20.

Oh, this guy.

He is hot-tempered.

But he's a hard worker.

And he'll do whatever he has
to do to get the job done.

You gotta have a couple
of handsome, capable sons

before you can do that.

Zach is the exact
opposite to myself

and his younger brother,
Riley.

Zach is probably one
of the most relaxed, easygoing

guys you'll ever meet.

We've had lots
of snow up north.

So--

Crispy, my third son,
is a potbellied pig.

When we got him, he was no
bigger than a loaf of bread.

Now he's about 250 pounds.

And he used to ride in the
semi with me all the time.

He absolutely loved it.

He'd put his little
feet up on the dash

and look out the window.

Like I don't have enough
problems in my life.

Wollaston is absolutely
closed right now.

And I'm getting
extremely nervous.

The season is going
to be a short one.

We've had an ungodly
amount of snow this year.

When you get a lot of snow
early, it insulates the water.

So then those cold
temperatures can't absorb

to freeze as fast
and as hard as we need it.

I think right now, we're going
to do some things that we don't

normally do this time of year.

Yeah, no, we'll do
what we got to do.

We're going to have
a tough winter.

narrator: Approaching Island
Lake outside Garden Hill--

The ice
crossing just opened up.

It's only open for light
traffic, which means that it's

not open for full weights yet.

narrator:--veteran driver
Todd Dewey is facing a 13-mile

lake crossing on ice
barely thick enough

to hold his empty truck.

That's kind of spooky,
if you think about it.

Thin ice means
anything can happen.

Here we go.

narrator: He's on a deadline
to pick up a back-haul today

that's going to Muskie Creek.

And the fastest way
to St. Theresa Point

is across the lake.

The ice is not as thick
as it's supposed to be.

I hope you have a will in place
set up for your family,

because most likely you
ain't making it home.

That's what could go wrong.

It's life and death up here.

I'm a little
concerned right now.

I'm not hearing a lot
of noise out of the ice.

The cracking of the ice
is always spooky.

But that's part
of the ice crossing.

You want to hear it cracking.

That actually means that the
ice is really, really strong.

When you can't hear any noise
at all, that's not a good sign.

I don't like that.

I don't like that one
single bit, not at all.

narrator:
Cracking sounds indicate

the ice is flexing
to relieve stress

from the truck's weight.

If the ice is too thin or too
weak to flex under the stress,

it could shatter,
releasing Todd and his truck

into the clutches
of the deadly frigid depths.

And off the ice.

Go get my next load
and turn and burn.

narrator: On the other
side of the lake--

I'm headed to
Garden Hill with some building

supplies for the communities.

The hills are very abrupt,
because it's not a road.

There's no, like, grades.

Like, they didn't
build it to be driven.

So when you come upon
a hill, it's not smooth.

And it's really
abrupt and sharp.

narrator:
The Muskie Creek owner's truck

is getting a beatdown
as Lisa faces

a final series
of hills standing

between her and the offload.

A little rowdy at the moment.

It's supposed to get worse.

What was that?

Hear a noise.

I got to check this out.

And this is a horrible
place to do it.

It sounds like it's
under the hood.

It's really loud right here.

Oh, good lord.

narrator:
The road to Garden Hill--

A little rowdy at the moment.

narrator:--battered
Lisa and her truck

and knocked out the hose
that moves compressed air

from the turbo to the engine.

Without the turbo, she doesn't
have the torque or the power

to pull her load
over the hills.

Thank goodness the hose
clamp is still there.

My gosh.

I actually think I'm going
to have to turn the truck off,

because there's pressure
coming out of there.

And it might not be
able to get it on.

But turning the truck off
is kind of a bush no-no,

because it might
not start again.

As the engine cools in

the unforgiving temperatures,

diesel fuel thickens

like day-old
Thanksgiving gravy,

preventing the truck
from restarting.
