Don't go to a cabin, like don't go to somewhere isolated.

If I barely knew a girl, I would not

take her to a secluded place, I would be too scared.

Also, they should be scared of me.

We should all be scared of each other.

I once was making out with a girl on a first date

and she started to have a seizure.I said this out loud to her during her seizure,

are you being possessed?

Because that's like how horror movies have infected my brain.

I thought she was being possessed by a demon.

Fears an anxieties around dating

can be driven by our own fears of connection,

our fears of revealing too much about ourselves too soon.

Our fears of trusting someone with our true self.

And also, the fear of the other.

Who does this person appear to be and who are they really.

Just partly truth, partly fiction.

Walking contradiction.

a relationship is frightening.Taking a risk, a chance on

It's one of the most important things

human beings do in their lives.

It is sort of this risk we all find that we have to take.

There's something sweet about you.

But every time we do it, you feel

like you're taking your life in your hands

and sometimes you are.

What are the worst dates in horror movies?

If you don't have a date for the prom next Friday,

wI remember being 16 and the? prom was just like the capstone

of everything.

It was what you were aiming for.

Yes!

She said yes.

In terms of ending a story, a romance ends at a wedding.

But for teenagers, they're too young to get married,

so it ends at the prom.

That's the big ritual.

You're a kid on your way in and you're a young adult,

when you go home.

It's such an American thing.

You're building all this climax around this moment that

is supposed to be the defining moment in this person's

life, which for a foreigner watching the film,

is such a weird thing to wrap your head around.

It's like you're putting all your life on a party?

But, yeah.

It is, how it works.

Prom Night 2 started out as a film

that is not a prom night film.

And through the modes of distribution

ended up as Hello Mary Lou, Prom Night 2.

A film 1,000 times better than Prom Night.

Prom Night 2 is kind of like this bratty stepchild

of Nightmare on Elm Street and Carrie,

in which a young woman is possessed by the spirit

of Mary Lou Maloney.

It was like a real bad girl in the 50s.

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned many times.

Did whatever she wanted.

I loved every minute of it.

Had no remorse about it.

Scram.

Was accidentally murdered by a jealous lover at the prom.

And then she returns as a supernatural slasher

possessing, the main character of Prom Night 2.

And just creating all sorts of mania.

I mean, there is a person crushed by lockers

in like spectacular form.

Wop, babawo, bap, wop, bam.

Most teenagers have some kind of inner rebellious self,

an inner outspoken self, an inner sexual self,

an inner something self.And they're afraid that if it ever gets out,

it's going to ruin their whole lives,

and it's going to destroy everything around them.

Because that's what they're taught

bythey're good boys and girls.y

So that happens to Vicki in this movie.

This kind of inner rebellion explodes.

Even though she's possessed, you kind of

sense that her ID is coming out and getting revenge

and it's great.

Hold me, daddy.

But it also, ruins her life a little bit.

What are you doing?

But it's really exciting and amusing to watch it happen.

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.

Will you pray for me?

Of course, child.

Will you fuck me?

Being a teenager is so hard.

Being an adolescent is so difficult. All of the horrible,

gross, weird things that are happening to our bodies,

and our emotions, and our hormones,

and our socialization.

And here's this film that takes that

through two wonderful lenses.

The lens of this kid who is kidnapped,

wakes up in a constructed prom nightmare.

Suck it.

The object of desire, the object of anger.

The plaything for this sadistic girl.

And it also, puts us through the lens of the girl.

The person who's been denied all of the things that we think

are going to make us whole.

The person who's been suffering in a really twisted experience

through her adolescence, and her body,

and her feelings, and her emotions, and rejection.

Timmy Valentine, he is the one that got away.

So she and her father, have created a nightmare theater.

You're just another frog.

For they can make shit happen.

If acupuncture needles in Audition put you off,

this will do the same thing for power drills.

There's a moment with the drill that still I kind sort of

hear it in my head to this day.

And it turns out there's something even worse

lurking under the floorboards.

It's up there with Evil Dead.

Paula is wild.

She is a wild, wild woman.

And all she wants is to have the perfect prom.

She's got crowns, she's got a pretty pink dress on,

she is just ready to have the perfect prom.

Carrie?

Probably, worst prom date on film.

That movie did such a wonderful job of building up Carrie to be

such a sympathetic character.

You have these very rough students,

who are picking on the weird kid, who

has all these troubles at home.

Come to your closet.

No.

And you are watching this sort of vengeful, desperate spirit,

building up inside of her.

Sit down and be quiet!

She just really wants to fit in and she gets a taste of it

at the prom, like that prom night's going really well.

She's getting what she never thought she would get.

She's getting this night that even in her wildest dreams,

she would never expect to get just

to have it torn away from her.

I'll remember my prom.

You'll never forget it.

I don't think I will.

but I'm always tempted to just stop the movie after she wins

prom queen and it's all very glittery and gauzy,

and she just she seems so happy, and

Sissy Spacek plays it so well.

And then you see Nancy Allen's character, like slowly

pulling on the string.

And you know the pig blood's coming and when it comes,

it's just terrific.

Then she just goes crazy and murders everybody.

At the heart of Kerry, lies the same heart

that beats in our chest.

It's the outcast out for revenge, who's triumphant

and just kills everybody.

Carrie is revenge porn for nerds.

Carrie is the worst date because it's like it's

a bunch of worst dates.

It's not just her having a bad date.

It's like-- There was a lot of people in that room, at that

prom, that had nothing to do with the bucket and maybe,

were in the back of the room and weren't laughing.

Maybe, there were some people that were going like,

that's not cool they did that.

They still died.

It's so primal.

It's such an adolescent revenge fantasy.

It's breathtaking.

Watch it, you stupid shit.

You're getting blood all over the place.

Keep your tits on and I'll let you pull the rope.

I think I'm going crazy.

No, you're not.

It's everyone else who's bonkers.

I know what to do about mother, some sort of accident.

Just the past couple of months,

it's kind of fascinating to me.

I don't like these movies.

I mean, I don't know much about movies.

This is not so bad.

Take me to a place like this is about, as exciting to me,

as saying let's fuck.

Terror Train has one of the worst

hookups in any horror movie.

Maybe, the worst, in which, nobody in the hook

up is murdered.

Basically, think early 80s, nightmare college,

where the really cool kids love to make

fun of the unpopular kids.

And the nerd, Kenny, has a huge crush on Jamie Lee Curtis.

And the rest of the cool kids come up with this idea

that they're going to play a horrible prank on Kenny.

So they're going to tell him that Jamie Lee Curtis

wants to have sex with him.

Anher, like in this dorm room.

And it's not Jamie Lee Curtis is in the bed,

it's a corpse, that they stole from,

like the biology department.

And, oh, my god!

What happens next is, like really--

Like the way they filmed this is just crazy.

He--

The character starts screaming hysterically

and he stands up on the bed, and he starts

turning around in circles, and the bed

decor gets caught around him.

And it's like he's turning--

It's really weird and unsettling, like they didn't

have to do that, you know.

They could have just been like, ha, ha, Kenny.

You know, whatever.

But for some reason, artistically, and story wise,

they decided that they needed something viscerally disturbing

to watch, like it's very disturbing.

It also, I think stops like in slow motion.

And you're like, huh.

And then the next thing you know, you're on a train,

like it's like the graduation party train.

And Kenny, may or may not have come back on the train

to kill people, because of the prank with the dead girl.

And then, there's also a love triangle, possibly.

With Alana at the center where Doc is in love with Mo.

And he's angry at Alana for taking Mo from him.

And that's why, when Mo is inevitably murdered,

Doc, who's just been this misogynistic, insensitive jerk,

suddenly feels.

Oh, come on, Mo!

He's holding him, he's crying, he's so devastated.

And we're like, man, Doc was in love with Mo all the time.

And, you know, maybe, that's even why he was messing around

with Kenny and kind of trying to shame him

sexually at the beginning of the movie,

because Doc felt ashamed.

So, Terror Train is really basically a Chekhov play.

Now is the time.

This is the hour.

Ours is the magic.

Ours is the power.

Sarah is the new girl in school

and she develops a flirtation with Chris.

Oh, shit.

It's the bitches of Eastwick.

What?

They're witches.

Witches?

But Nancy has her own history with Chris.

And Chris is like, not a good guy.

He spreads disease.

I speak from personal experience.

And they start doing witch stuff.

Light a feather, stiff as a board.

Light as a feather, stiff as a board.

They put a love spell on Chris.

And it goes a little too far, because he

won't stop pursuing her.

I think you should take me home.

No.

Get back.

Come back here.

God, damn it!

He attempts to rape her and she manages to escape.

Ah!

And when Nancy sees what has happened to her, what Chris has

tried to do to her, she becomes infuriated

and incredibly dangerous.

Just leave her alone.

Don't go, you're not going to help anything.

I want to go play.

So Nancy goes to this house party to seek him out.

And it's really interesting, because when she enters

that scene, her rage is very righteous, but it shifts,

when Nancy gets him alone.

We see in her still this desire for his validation.

To sort of be chosen by him.

She transforms herself into Sarah.

And that escalates.

And it escalates, and it escalates.

You don't even exist to me!

She keeps telling him he's nothing, he's nothing,

he's nothing.

And the repetition of the words become a spell.

You are nothing.

And it's this sick trombone shot that plays with the space.

are shit.

You don't exist.

And he's backing up and Sarah is watching in horror.

I'm sorry.

He's sorry.

Oh, he's sorry, sorry, sorry.

He's sorry.

He's Sorry.

He's sorry.

Sorry, my ass!

And then, he goes out the window and crashes

to the ground and dies.

And Sarah didn't even want any of it.

In all storytelling about love spells,

there's always a warning.

No love spell can actually reproduce love,

because love is entirely predicated

on free choice and free will.

And a love spell necessarily takes that away.

It's the danger of putting someone's attention

and someone's validation on a pedestal,

and making that the most important thing about yourself.

And the kind of violence that, that reads in its own way.

I guess the ultimate bad date movie would be

Audition, Takashi Miike's film.

It's in a sense about video dating,

which was just starting to become

a thing back at the time.

And, basically, a guy who gets into it

kind of with ulterior motives, which aren't very healthy.

And then he gets the tables very, very violently

turned on him.

With the help of his film producer friend,

they auditioned a bunch of women to essentially become his wife.

And they pick Asami, who, if you look at a checklist,

she's perfect.

She's beautiful, she cares about you a lot,

she only cares about you.

Unfortunately, for them, if you

are not 100% devoted to Asami, you're in big trouble.

I think that's what makes it interesting

is when you see Audition, you think this woman is,

just know, a sweet, innocent actress

who's looking for a part.

And it's like, oh, this kind of predatory

like, director is going to like take advantage of her

or lure her into a trap.

And then it flips it on its head.

Where this movie ends is the ultimate date gone wrong.

Where he finds himself tied to the floor,

completely immobilized.

Piano wire, needles, the whole night.

But, honestly, did he deserve it?

He may have deserved it.

What makes it work is I think the universality of it,

like we still have that behavior in society,

where people in power will corrupt somebody

young or innocent or put them in a position, where they

have to question themselves.

It's good to see human universal element thathink that's the kind of core

really makes this movie stand out.

Aside from the extremely gory methods that she uses on him.

Horror and romance have a very long standing

relationship with one another.

When I'm dead, I think I'll come and haunt you.

Ah!

Because of the Gothic literature

that the genre stemmed out of.

May you not rest while I am living.

Cathie?

The romance that's featured in Jennifer's body

is really fun, because it's a coming of age story.

And it's really about the romance between,

Jennifer and her best friend Needy.

The horror kicks in on this night, where Needy

is on a date with Jennifer, but Jennifer

is trying to date these dudes in this band from New York.

In that situation goes terribly wrong.

It ends very, very, very poorly.

Everyone's traumatized.

Is dangerous out here.

You want to head someplace safer, like my van?

So after this terrible night, Jennifer comes back different.

Through a kind of backwards demonic possession, Jennifer,

ends up becoming this voluptuous, sex goddess.

She's a little bit crueler, a little more beautiful.

And she finally goes on a date with Colin,

who's kind of the little emo kid of the high school.

Who previous to this, she's been really

declining all of his advances.

There's a midnight showing of Rocky Horror at the Bijou,

next weekend.

I don't like boxing movies.

Colin, bless him, thinks he's going out with his dream girl.

And he arrives in a strange abandoned building.

There's candles everywhere and it's very creepy.

You made it.

This isn't really your house, is it?

No, baby.

This is our house.

We can play mommy and daddy.

The scene is really interesting

and really horrifying.

It's cut between Needy and her boyfriend's date.

And there's this kind of telepathic connection

between Needy and Jennifer, where Needy is experiencing

Jennifer's experience of Colin.

What we see here is the overlay of sex and consumption.

And when you think about women's experience of dating

and the anxieties that like, a cis het woman would

have going out with a man is like, well,

are they going to kill me?

Like, what horrifying thing are they going to do to me?

But then the subversion happens, where he needs

to be really afraid of her.

We have so many male characters as murderers

that it's always kind of refreshing to see

like female murderers.

Personally, I'm like, yeah, let's spread the wealth around,

you know.

Like exorcism possession movies.

It's a spirit that's possessing, but it's usually

in a female body that's commanding

all of this fear and respect, which is fun to see.

It's funny, I used to daydream about being

old enough to go on dates.

It Follows is so haunting.

Maika Monroe's character goes on a date

and it's a very sweet date.

playing this game pointing out somebody that you would

want to trade places with.

And her date says.

How about the girl in the yellow dress?

And she's like.

I don't see her.

And then her date, totally like goes pale

and leaves the theater even before the movie starts.

She sees him again, they have a very romantic night,

they sleep together in his car.

The sex scene in It Follows was

kind of shock, A little awkward and a little,

like there was something off about it.

And then, suddenly out of nowhere,

she's tied to a wheelchair and he tells her

that she is completely cursed.

She is now going to be followed by this entity

that she is going to have to be constantly

running away from, unless she has sex with somebody else.

I mean, that is a hell of a predicament

to be put in on a first date.

It has its tempo, but it's relentless.

It Follows.

It's that slow, but constant thing.

It's like the tone of the whole movie feels like the curse.

And it has so much good stuff in it.

It's like the camera, the rotating camera

moves the, the thing that it's following

them taking different shapes, which

is like such a great idea.

And how it makes you be looking into the background

of every shot to see if, well, if it's following.

The whole movie seems to be about STDs

and the fear of having sex with people the first time.

That you're truly putting yourself and your body

out there without really knowing what to expect

and then what the repercussions could be.

The underlying message is a very, very old one that horror

fans are familiar with.

About the dangers of sex, of having a sexual life.

I mean, the message of the film almost genuinely

seems to be fuck around and find out.

Say, young lady, I think that you're

about ready for another one of my famous cherry coolers.

I think I've had enough.

Nonsense, you've never had enough.

Now, we take Masterchard, Visa, American Express,

I got good news and bad news, girls.

The good news is your dates are here.

What's the bad news?

They're dead.

Going on a date in real life is

one of the most vulnerable, kind of humiliating things,

you can do.

It's never super fun.

You know, you're the most beautiful

woman I've seen since my mom.

And on top of that, the intersection of horror and sex,

sexuality, romance.

Cathie?

It's been there since the beginning.

Bride of Frankenstein is such a great example

for a great date movie.

Frankenstein is a troubled monster.

But he is so lovable.

He just needs love, hope, home, peace.

He needs everything that all of us,

as humans, ask for every single day of our lives.

Cuddle me a little bit.

You know, I could use a hug today.

Could you say something nice to me, please?

The inciting action in a bunch of these other movies

is the bad date happens pretty early on,

and then we're all dealing with the fallout of the date, right?

In Frankenstein is the anticipation of a date that's

going to happen at the end of this movie

and how is it going to go?

And then, of course, it goes badly, so quickly.

Can you imagine your arranged marriage the person

you're going to spend the rest of eternity with,

looks upon you and shrieks in utter horror.

We've all had that feeling, been desperate, unhinged even,

with the hopes that this person that is going to come

into our lives is going to love us,

is going to look upon us with just joy.

When she hisses at him and he's terrified,

it's totally relatable of what could

happen on a really bad date.

She hate me.

Like others.

But then, to his credit, he doesn't react

with violence towards her.

His solution is to be, like, all right,

we need to shut all of this down,

which I actually thought was surprising for a movie

like that.

I was like, oh, you would think a more traditional Frankenstein

movie would be like, rejection, me mad now,

burn castle, which kind of does happen, anyway.

Get away from that leaver, you'll blow us all to atoms.

But it's more to stop the whole process.

Go, you live.

Freeing them.

We belong dead.

It's utterly heartbreaking.

There couldn't be a worse date in the history of movies.

You know what I mean?

It's like after hours.

After Hours is a horror movie.

Oh, God.

Oh.

It's a classic bad date movie where everything goes

wrong, that could go wrong.

Martin Scorsese is a big horror fan

and After Hours is kind of like, his covert horror film.

It's very, very funny, but you don't realize

just how much your stomach is kind of

Griffin Dunne, plays this guy who has this meet cute moment

with Rosanna Arquette.

They're going to go have a date that night in Soho.

Oh, my god!

He gets down there.

Like something incredible is really going to happen here.

She gives him her whole life story, which just gets stranger

and stranger and stranger.

I'm scared.

My husband was a movie freak.

He took his time, six hours.

Do you live with him?

No, he's in Turkey.

I just can't deal with it tonight.

He just scream out, surrender, Dorothy.

I'm glad you came.

And, spoiler alert, then she dies.

He finds her dead in her apartment.

Marcy!

Oh, Jesus!

And it turns into, basically, a manhunt.

The whole neighborhood, for various reasons,

winds up out to kill Griffin Dunne.

Oh shit!

And he, basically, gets chased back

the rest of the film at night.

You know, if you ever walk down the street

and you're just, like, what if everybody

really was out to get me?

And this movie says, this is exactly what it would be like.

What do you want from me?

There you go.

The fair went up to $1 and a half as of midnight.

Its is a perfect snapshot of New York in the 80s.

Yes, before ATMs and cell phones,

this could happen to you.

Would you just give me a break.

I really just want to go home.

I'm sorry, I can't do that.

I could lose my job.

Who would know, exactly?

I could go to a party, get drunk,

talk to someone, who knows.

That whole movie would be solved by an ATM,

but he's stuck.

What I thought was interesting about Scream 2,

is they took the meta idea of someone

having made a film about the events of the first movie.

So, you know, Maureen and her boyfriend, go to see Stab.

And that date goes really fucking bad.

It was such a fun intro, because the movie

just completely created what we all did for the first Scream.

We all went together with a group of friends

or on a date to go see that film.

We all knew what that feeling was.

Then having it be a date from hell, where you're going to be

targeted, you're not going to make it out of this theater

alive, you might not even want to go to this movie,

to begin with.

I hate scary movies.

All of those things just run amok

and that doesn't end well for them.

The horror genre is historical for excluding

the African-American element.

in black cinema, Sister Souljah?

She's kind of calling out the tropes,

tbathroom and hears some noise,

and he kind of curiously puts his ear up to the bathroom

stall, which tickled me, because I was like, who

puts their ear up to a stall to hear

what's going on over there?

And then he gets stabbed and then Ghostface comes back.

You came back just in time, it looks

like she's about to get it.

And stabs Maureen to death in front

of the whole audience, who thinks it's part of the movie

and cheers it on.

When she goes up to that screen and everyone sees

that she's bleeding, it became a little

too real, because no one will understand

what's wrong with her.

Is it part of the film, is she reenacting something

or is that girl just super passionate about the movie

that she's acting it out.

Because of the fandom and how excited people get,

no one's going to help her.

So it became really, really dark and that's definitely a date

that went wrong really fast.

American Psycho is one of these films that's

almost impossible to watch without feeling

deeply, deeply uncomfortable.

The Christian Bale character is a portrait of 80s indulgence

and narcissism.

Give me a break.

Something horrible is happening inside of me.

I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.

His main motivator is he is so upset by the shallowness

of everyone around him.

He's not self-aware at all.

I don't think he realizes that he's

just as bad as everyone else.

I can't believe that Bryce prefers

Van Patton's card to mine.

He thinks he's kind of the only person

in a world full of sheep.

It's sort of fucking loser you are.

Patrick has a secretary that is just enamored of him.

You look nice today.

Don't wear that outfit again.

But she's kind of plain and ordinary,

and she just doesn't think that he'll

ever take an interest in her.

But one night, he actually asks her out.

And they go to his beautiful apartment,

and they're hanging out.

And it looks like, oh, my god, like they

might actually hook up.

But he actually just wants to murder her.

I guess, you could say, I just want

to have a meaningful relationship

with someone special.

He snapped out of it by a voicemail

that ends up being left on his phone, kind of breaks him

out of his trance that he's in.

Patrick, Patrick.

I hope you're not out there with some little number

you picked up, because you're my Mr Bateman.

My boy next door.

And he lets Jean go and says to get out.

One of the things it does is it

plants that seed in your brain every time you

sit down to dinner.

What is that person thinking.

It doesn't have to be that I'm going to cut off your breasts

It could be something as simple as, like I truly hate you

and I don't want to be here or even, I love you completely

and I want to marry you, which could be

just as scary on a first date.

I don't think we should see each other anymore.

Why? What's wrong?

I need to engage in homicidal behavior on a massive scale,

but I have no other way to fulfill my needs.

It has something to say about modern dating, which

is he better not be more in love with himself

than he is with you or you could be at risk.

And then you learn more and more and more.

It's a horror movie in life.

So it lends itself to being a perfect setup

for a horror film.

Once things like internet dating literally gotten big.

There was kind of this feeling that

like the way that people were connecting

wasn't quite the way that it used to be.

Well, I think it's better to meet

people online first sometimes.

People's faces lie.

Does my face lie?

There was always kind of a threat

involved whenever you tried to make

a new connection with somebody.

And to films that really I think capitalize on that well

are Your Next and Ready or Not.

Your next is actually, one of my favorite bad date movies.

And it is about a woman named Erin, who comes to visit

her boyfriend's family.

- Nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you.

They have a nice little house out in the woods.

You're folks seem cool.

I mean, for people with money, you're lucky.

Yes.

But somebody starts hunting them down.

Get away from the window!

And the first twist is you don't realize that Erin

was raised as a survivalist.

I had kind of a weird childhood.

I grew up on a survivalist compound.

That's crazy.

So she's actually really fucking smart

and the last person you'd want to be going up against.

But then, the other twist is you realize

that some of the family members have actually set

this whole thing up, because they want to get

their family's inheritance.

Excuse me?

I just had to kill my own brother, because you guys keep

getting beat up by some girl.

It's an extremely violent film, it's very gory,

but it also has a really good sense of humor.

It's not even the heart, you dumb bitch--

She beat that family's ass.

I really love when a character gets the upper hand

and are making choices that shows I want to live.

It says hide and seek, are we really going to play that?

The game is actually one where they hunt her down

in the house with weapons, because all rich people are

insane, like it's just a fact.

Like if you know someone with money, they're crazy.

So she is running through this mansion

and has to find ways to defend herself

against this psychotic family.

And if she can survive the night, well,

then she's worthy of being rich.

Sort of a metaphor for regular life, I think.

Well, Samara Weaving's character is a lot tougher

than they gave her credit for.

And she ends up putting up quite a fight.

Samara Weaving, once we met her for the first time,

we knew that what she would bring

to the role of Grace McCauley is just

another level of embodiment.

Having that innocence and then, also having that eye roll.

Jesus!

As to the craziness of what's happening around her

at the very end of the movie, when the family

finally gets their comeuppance.

And their bodies are exploding left and right.

Samara came to us, and she said, I feel like I should be

laughing during all of this, like I am winning,

I should be happy.

And from there on, that was the take that we knew was right.

I think that Get Out is the best worst date film.

It is a reminder that meeting your girlfriend's family

is scarier than 90% of all horror films.

At the start of the film, before they've

left to go to her family's house,

Chris asks Rose if her parents know he's black.

She says no, but then, does the very

standard thing, the thing that we've all heard of like,

The standard, of course, we aall know the story of Get Out.

and that's not the case.

Such a privilege to be able to experience

another person's culture.

For some folks, it's kind of like,

Part of the horror is in the fact that we don't know.

You don't know until that trap door opens and swallows you,

and then you're in it.

You were one of my favorites.

That, to me, is always the like the core horror

of romance.

Is that it doesn't matter how many years

you spend with someone, you can never

truly know another person.

And that's because people are always changing.

We're not static, we evolve over time.

And the promise to love somebody forever, in all of their forms,

is a giant one, Because you don't know what

heads they're going to grow.
