We're in a good momentum of results.

I… It is doable
to win this Championship.

So, I'm off to see my mom.

I don't get to see my mom much.
Obviously, I'm away a lot.

And she lives, uh, yeah,
like 45 minutes away from me.

You'll see very different lifestyle
to what I have.

Very rustic, very… easygoing,
which I do envy it sometimes.

Like, it's just so nice and simple
and plain and…

and you'll see when we get
out of the car, man, the vibe is just…

so chill, so countryside. It's amazing.

I was very lucky,
because I was born in a family where,

from the first memories that I have,
I was involved in racing.

You know, with two years old,
I was watching my brothers race

and my uncles race,
so racing pedigree family, for sure.

My uncles, to this day,
they are the only three brothers

that did the 24 Hours of Le Mans
in the same car.

My grandmother was pushing me
to go racing.

My mother was pushing me to go racing.

People sometimes ask me,

"When was the moment
you decided to become a racing driver?"

But I don't think there was ever
that moment

because it's just always been there.

Uh, I have four… four children, four boys.
I have four boys.

António, Pedro, Salvador, and João.

Is António the baby, or…

No, Pedro is the baby.
António is the third.

And he started in the cars
with his eldest brother, with João.

I once told António
that he has not blood in his veins.

He has gasoline.

Do you still worry
about him or…

Yes, yes, all the time.
A mom is always worried about him.

But, um, I have faith in him,
and I think God will protect you.

The way that António looks to him

That was the first ever time in my life

that when I saw the whole thing happening
in a split second,

I closed my eyes and I thought,

"I will get hurt now.
I will be seriously hurt now," and…

Everything happened so quickly,
and when I rewatched the onboard of my car

and hitting him,
hitting Buemi, landing on top of me,

the first thing I did was, you know,
I… I said a prayer straight away.

You know, I'm a religious guy, and…

and I think, yeah,
God wanted us to be… to be safe that day.

- But I'm okay.

- Copy.

António was protected by the halo,

but also I think it's God's hand,

because some part of the car
could beat him on the neck.

I think he's blessed.

But I'm not afraid of going racing.
I understand the dangers of it.

The danger, um, aspect of the sport

is something
that makes it, um, more special.

Nobody wants anything bad to happen ever,

but we know that
that's a possibility, for sure.

The sun is shining in Portland,
the most populous city in Oregon.

What we could want
is the business end of the season.

There is not a lot in this.

One mistake, one DNF,
and it could all change.

he's nearly 60 points behind

his Porsche teammate, Pascal Wehrlein.

While Jaguar drivers Nick Cassidy
and Mitch Evans

are one and three
on the Championship leaderboard,

there's still everything to play for
here in Portland.

I just need a strong weekend in Portland
to give myself

any sort of hope
at winning this Championship.

António's coming off the back
of a huge run of form,

so he's gonna be a threat this weekend.

He could be, you know,
a bit of a worry for us.

I'm still within a shot,
but I also know my competition, you know?

I know Nick's gonna be strong in Portland.

We're arriving in Portland,

and Nick Cassidy can define
his entire career

over this weekend.

Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy,
arguably the two best drivers on the grid,

who are from the same country,
who've known each other for decades,

are really close friends.

when they're under team orders?

This is properly exciting.

Look, the position that Mitch
and I are in is…

there's two of us fighting
for a World Championship.

It doesn't matter if you're best mates
or not.

Cassidy's leading the Championship
by 25 points,

and he's had a great run of form.

And I think Cassidy's
had the upper hand over Evans as well,

so as we head into the final four races,

he's got to be the odds-on favorite
for the title.

and possibly this weekend,
two championships.

Feeling good, feeling good.
It's gonna be a fun race.

We know what to do.

Yeah, I know you've adapted your strategy

when it comes to Team Radio this season,

but you gave us some gold last year.
Are you gonna give us some gold today?

Yeah, I know. People keep asking me this.

People keep coming up to me
and saying I'm boring now.

I'm just like, "Well,

you know, I can't win."

I… I either shout and people love it,
some people hate it,

but unfortunately the people
that might pay me

for the next 15 years don't like it…

…so I've got to play the game a bit more.

Mitch Evans,
his second pole position of the season,

taking a crucial three points
to keep his Championship hope alive.

But the polesitter has not won
in the last 11 consecutive races.

Probably not the best track to be on pole
with the nature of the style of racing.

There's a lot going on, like there's cars,

you know, darting everywhere
and very easy to make contact.

This lap in Portland's
actually the fastest lap,

average speed-wise, of the whole calendar.

So, it just means
that if you make a mistake,

you're going quicker than other places,
so the crashes are more spectacular.

Evans really needs
to finish ahead of Cassidy here

to close the gap in the Championship.

It is on in Oregon.
Lights out and we're underway.

Good start from Mitch Evans
off the front row.

Hughes trying to challenge him
on the outside through turn two.

Can he find his way through?

You have to be ruthless in our sport.

If you're a little bit soft on track,
you're gonna get bullied around.

You get shuffled back
and you just get eaten up.

So, you have to be aggressive.

It's all good so far.
However, it just takes someone

to misjudge what someone else is doing,

and then a wing or something
is already gone.

Oh! Jake Hughes going off
onto the grass on the inside of turn 11,

just about catches up,
but loses a fistful of positions.

Jake Hughes kind of squeezes over
to… to follow the car ahead of him,

and my wing just slices his tire,
and, uh…

basically he gets an instant puncture.

Mitch Evans,
five-second time penalty

for that collision with Jake Hughes.

That means it's almost impossible
for Evans to win the race.

Still a long race here.

Let's get to the end of this first.
We're fighting.

Try to make a few positions.

Then through into
the lead goes Nick Cassidy. Fantastic.

God, where was he
two laps ago? He was tenth!

That was the fastest lap
by Nick Cassidy in the last lap.

He's now in the position
he likes to be in,

but he's got António Félix da Costa
behind him,

and both of those know how
to win these big races.

It's a bad day for us,
because Cass is leading the Championship,

he's leading the race.

Evans trying to challenge,
trying to disrupt.

Yeah, I think that Evans
is just gonna have to play

the rear gunner role here at the moment
and try and help Cassidy to win this race.

Ticktum sounding
very despondent on the team radio.

He qualified so well,

but he's really missed
the opportunity to impress here.

Two laps now remaining

as we see Cassidy just holding on
to that race.

You can see him driving
the defensive lines, though.

Evans isn't gonna give this up.

Oh! Wide there for Cassidy!
That's a mistake. He's off onto the grass!

What was that? Nick went off.

He's lost it! Evans
and Cassidy very close to one another

and Cassidy spins it round!

What a disaster
for the Championship contender!

The rest of the field
goes sweeping on through,

and Nick Cassidy has thrown away
the victory here in Portland.

Cass, he bins it.

I could not believe…
I could not believe my eyes.

Because, yeah, I mean,
he never makes mistakes like that.

That is an absolute
disaster for the Championship leader.

And then I start the last lap of the race
in P2 behind Mitch.

Evans in front has a five seconds penalty.

So, I am the leader of this race.

As we come out of the final corner,

it'll be Evans
who takes the checkered flag first

but it is António Félix da Costa
who comes across the line

to take yet another victory.

Three in the last four races
for António Félix da Costa.

And again, it is Porsche
who power to the top here in Portland

with António Félix da Costa
taking top honors.

They are absolutely delighted.

will be very, very disappointed.

That's sport, right? It's highs and lows.

Um…

Sometimes you're up and about happy.
Sometimes you're super pissed off.

Ultimately, I'm pissed off
because I'm competitive.

When you're fighting
for a World Championship,

um, of course there's more on the line.

Is this a guy who's just fallen
at a hurdle,

but still has another opportunity,
and actually a few opportunities?

Or is this a guy
who's just cost himself the world title?

to this winner's circle

Feels like you can barely get him
off the top step of the podium.

That doesn't happen often in Formula E.

Like, it's a great day for us.

I mean, firstly,

gotta say congrats to Mitch
'cause he did win this one on the track.

And I know how it feels
to get one taken away.

So, you know, hats off to him.

But obviously, we'll take it, you know?
We did everything right today.

It just seems ridiculous
that I got this penalty.

It's tough because you've got
other people making these big calls,

um, that have massive impact
on the ultimate result.

Mitch is the kind of personality
who is pretty volatile initially,

but then quite pragmatic after it.

But he's not the kind of person
that forgets.

There's not much he can do about it,
because it's out of his hands.

It's out of Jaguar's hands.
But he's just gotta deal with it.

Resilience, I would say,

is probably one of the biggest things
in Formula E.

You have to be able to take difficult days
and turn those into positives.

And as a team, that becomes something
which drives you.

What could we do better that weekend?

I gotta be careful what I say
'cause I'm pretty… pretty fired up.

Yeah, fucking harsh.

It's my favorite time of year.

It is that period where contracts
are up for renewal.

Essentially, it's the musical chairs
of where drivers are gonna be

the following season.

of the year?

The first time I met Dan Ticktum,

we were at Pembrey Circuit in Wales.
It was pouring with rain.

I looked across,
and there's this car completely sideways,

perpendicular to the circuit.
He was flashing the headlights,

and waving at me, and holding this drift
around the last corner all at one time.

And yet I thought,
"The guy's got unbelievable car control,

uh, but he's also quite mad."

- Thank you very much, man.
- No problem at all.

- I appreciate that. Thank you.

My goal this year was
to become more employable.

Basically, I can just see a future here,
and I'm just more motivated in general.

I can't tell you
what's flicked the switch.

I just think it's time, you know?
Everyone says it. "Time heals," whatever.

But there's more to life than getting
to Formula One, you know?

Nice.

Lovely.

I've known Billy
since I was eight.

Um, started racing around a similar time.

Amazing character, so nice to have
a familiar face in the paddock.

So, we've known each other now
the best part of more or less 20 years.

Yeah.

It's like when people say, like,

"School days
are the best days of your life,"

- that's how I remember karting.
- Yeah.

You didn't have to worry about money.

I'm at the age now where

you gotta be happy away
from the track, there's no doubt.

Mm. So, everything away
from the racetrack,

- is just… you're in a good spot.
- Yeah. I'm… For the first time,

I'm probably, like, happy.

- Like, this year, to be honest, so…

But, like,
my contract's up this year.

Like, I need to be in a place
where I can get some results now.

Like, I can't do another two, three years
of struggling, you know?

I'm too good, really…

…to be driving around
in the back now.

I kind of know the backstory.
I guess most people at home…

you know, who you've raced,
who you've beaten, what level you're at.

I think once I'm actually
on the track,

I don't think about anything else,

apart from, you know, driving as well
as I can and getting angry.

…you know? I'm doing quite well this year.
I've had a few people come…

I was about to say.

…up to me saying, like,
"Oh, you've been boring this year."

- It's just like I can't fucking win.
- Yeah.

This is a tamer version of Dan,
or a more mature version

- than I've seen even, like, a year ago.
- Yeah, I would say, yeah.

- Which isn't a bad thing, in like…
- I'd say that's fair.

…like, you know,
it's just you grow up, don't you? And…

Yeah. I think my goals are different.
I think that's what I've realized.

This is just my job now.
So, now I'm like a professional.

Do I still have a drive?
Um, yeah, massively.

Do I still wanna win Formula E
and other championships? Yes, definitely.

I think I've started to finally see
the glass a bit more half full.

You know, the opportunity
that I still have

to be a professional racing driver is…

…just one of the best things in the world.

So, you know, I've really started
to get my sort of motivation

and passion back for wanting
to achieve good things in racing.

I've proved that I'm fast
in the first part of my career,

and now I've got to prove I can do a job,

and then the third part of my career
will be hopefully winning,

um, and then the fourth part
will probably be I won't be as fast,

but I'll take some money,
and then that'll be that.

It's coming
to the crunch point, right?

to be a bit more…

calm and employable recently
because he needs a contract.

He knows that he needs a job.

for our driver line-up yet,

which I believe we will need

We are in Portland, the second race
of our double-header weekend

- here in the United States of America.

The best thing about
a double-header for a driver

is if you make a big mistake in race one,
you get to make up for it in race two.

Ultimately,
I wanna win the Championship.

So, you gotta try and refocus
and, um, you know, regroup.

You know, there's only three races left
in the season.

Mitch is my friend.
I will always race him as hard as I can.

But we're fighting
at the sharp end of things now.

As we start lap 12 then,

Nick Cassidy, he now begins to try
and make his ascension.

So, down into turn one we go.

Oh! It just concertinas up.

Evans has hit his teammate, Cassidy.

Yeah, I don't even know what
came first, if he hit the guy in front,

then I hit him, or if I hit him
and he hit the guy in front.

Really nothing either of us
could have done differently,

because some of these slow-speed corners,
you know, if you're kind of in,

everyone just backs up,
it's like a traffic jam

on the motorway, and all of a sudden,

there's a car stationary in front of you,
and it's impossible to avoid.

Lightning strikes twice in Portland,
Nick's out again,

and it's egg on the face of Jaguar,
and you can't believe it.

We've got nine laps remaining.

It's fast, it's frantic,
it's chaos out there.

They tell me,
"Okay, take the lead,

and tow Pascal to make him win."

Okay, I understand that,
we can both finish on the podium.

And I still believe that the best way
for us of winning the Championship…

it's to work together as a team.
You help each other.

Da Costa, Wehrlein,
down towards the first corner.

Da Costa already going for the lead.

So, I take the lead of the race,
and okay, I'm in control of this race now.

Guys, what should I do?

Said, "Okay, slow down the race,
Pascal needs to pass Robin."

So, I slow down the race.

Da Costa it is that leads.
Evans on the outside, down into turn one.

Evans is gonna sweep his way through,
and up into third place.

Go on, Mitch.

The problem is Pascal
gets passed by Mitch.

So, now there's two cars
in between us again.

And I'm asking, "What should I do?"

And it's awkward for me.

It's awkward
because I've been asked to help him,

but he's not there for me to help.

He cannot slow down. He cannot risk it.

Now, da Costa's going
for the race victory,

more than protecting his teammate.

It's a two-horse race
then, seemingly, out in front.

António Félix da Costa driving

Robin Frijns driving
for his first win of the season.

No way through for Frijns here for now,

but he's very, very close
onto the back of the Porsche.

Frijns is right on his rear wing
as we come through into turn 12!

It's going to be a drag to the line
here in Portland,

but surely it's gonna go the way
of António Félix da Costa.

Three wins in a row in season ten!

back on the podium in third place.

It's insane what we've done.

And now I'm within 30 points
of the Championship leader.

The season is a complete roller coaster
for me,

and the mix of emotions are insane.

a spanner in the works
on this Championship.

He's finished third, second, second
in the last couple of years,

so he knows how close he's been.

there was four of us in contention.

We go green in Berlin!
And Evans doesn't move!

The very last race, yeah, I had a…

I had a mechanical failure
which put me out.

Season eight against Stoffel,
just me and him were fighting for…

for the Championship
up until the last race.

And then, obviously, last year,
you know, we had a three-way fight

between Jake, Nick, and I.

And, yeah, obviously, Jake was able
to clinch it on day one of London.

There's been a lot of "what-ifs."

I think my name's "The Bridesmaid"
in Formula E,

so that's… that's something
I really want to change.

But every time you don't achieve it,

it kind of is definitely an element where
it does start to eat you up a little bit.

I've known for a long time, since 2009.

I always value his advice and guidance.

So, how bad do you want it, mate?

I could have almost had, like,

- three or four championships.

So, it's a balance of,

right now, a bit of frustration and desire
to winning this thing.

And I think I just miss that feeling.

You have got the most experience,

was a really frustrating one.

The points are being accumulated.

It's just trying to diffuse some
of the tension or the things that…

in that situation,

which is the most difficult thing
in sport, right?

Yep. People think we're…

sometimes that we're robots
and we can do

everything perfect all the time.
Obviously, it's not the case.

Everyone's got their own way
of controlling their mental state.

Especially in those critical moments and…

I feel like I've got relatively good

- at managing that.
- Yeah.

But again, it always creeps in.
That's gonna be tough.

It is the title-deciding weekend

has just been remarkable.

It was only a few months ago
that we almost thought

he wouldn't be racing for Porsche anymore,

and then goes on an absolute rampage
of point scoring and wins.

The fact that António
is in title contention

is pretty extraordinary,
given the season that he's had.

He's just in a roller coaster.
He's flying around all over the place.

It's always been the depths of despair

or an absolute peak of victory
for António.

What's the mood like
in the garage this morning?

We are in a very, very good mood.
Team fully motivated.

We did the best season so far
for Porsche in Formula E.

And we are clearly trying
to attack, best possible, the Jaguars.

They are under pressure.

They did, in the last races,
some mistakes.

We have nothing to lose, all in,

and try to get the best out of it
this weekend.

The mix of emotions are insane,
and then all the media

and a lot of my friends
and everyone's like,

"Man, we're going into London."

"You can win it,
you can win it, you can win it."

As a person, as an athlete,
my ambitions are always to win.

But it's still like 30-something points,
it's… it's hard.

And I still need to do my job
to… to help Pascal.

We are playing a part
in his Championship campaign.

We wear the same suit,
we have the same car.

It's my job to do that for him.

As this opening lap
develops, da Costa has a lot to do.

Unfortunately for me,
I qualified ninth,

so I had to fight my way
to the front of the pack.

Da Costa two places up.
That's a really good lap for him.

Some of my most fun races
have been the races

that I come through the pack
and sometimes finishing in the top five.

I knew a lot was possible.

I'm just gonna do everything I can
to win this race.

Moves on the inside there
for da Costa, looking for seventh place.

Overtaking
is one of the coolest things

you can do in motorsports.

What I love is going side by side,
wheel to wheel, fighting for position.

It's racing in the meaning of the word.

He's made progress, hasn't he?

Started ninth,
got himself into the top five,

now getting into Championship contention.

It's a really bad feeling.

That was my Championship over.

But I would rather lose a Championship
for trying too hard

and being too aggressive

All of Porsche's hopes
now rest on Pascal Wehrlein's shoulders.

is super important in Formula E.

It's a practical move to get extra power.
But to get that extra power,

you have to move away
from the conventional racing line,

so you end up losing time.

They need to make sure
they don't lose track position

in a way that they can't get back.

as an opportunity
to overtake him into first place.

I think the healing process

and descents that he's been on.

He'll be disappointed with that one,
wondering what might have been.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall
for Jaguar.

I was not happy after the race.

Pascal was able to pressure me a lot
and able to overtake me,

which on my part was a bit weak.

But fair play to the Porsche guys.
They just executed a better race than us.

We've got three drivers realistically

in with a title fight with one race left.

It's round 16 of the 2024
Formula E World Championship.

We're in London
for the final round of the season.

It all comes down to this then.

Three drivers
in with a shout of the title.

Four points separating them.
Winner takes all stakes.

The fascinating thing for me
is how now Jaguar manage things.

Are you gonna challenge your teammate
and how are you gonna do it?

This is the biggest question
of the season.

Do you let the two drivers go at it,
running the risk of wiping each other out?

With both of us
in contention of winning,

it's harder for one driver
to accept playing the team game.

Obviously, the Teams' Championship
is a huge thing for Jaguar,

so they don't wanna jeopardize that
in any way,

but they also wanna give us a fair chance

at winning
this Drivers' World Championship.

We both get fair treatment

to be able to make the right calls
for ourselves in the race.

I'm just gonna try
and leave without any regrets.

We have two drivers that are world-class,
and when the moments arise,

they can step up.

You can't predict everything
right now, um,

but, yeah, if a decision needs
to come at some point

to make sure one of them wins,
then that's what we'll do.

António's collision with Oliver
on the Saturday

basically ended his Championship chances.

For him, it's now all about trying to get
in the mix to support Pascal.

I think we've got a really good,
really cool fight ahead of us.

Porsche just seem
to have a calmness.

I guess it helps that they only have
one driver in the Championship fight.

So, they could focus all of their effort

and energy on just getting Pascal
as high up as possible.

Whereas both Jag drivers will be desperate
to win a Drivers' title.

So, if they have to deploy team orders,

it will probably upset
one of their drivers.

But if they one-two in the race

at a track like the ExCel in London,
which is so narrow,

and you can control it…

they could just orchestrate
the one-two finish

as they had done so perfectly
in Monaco earlier in the year.

I wasn't getting the support,

It may not feel like it
for him sitting in third position,

I felt really bad with myself.

I still need to stay on track
and do my job to help Pascal.

It is not over, this one.

I really forced myself
to the back of Pascal

to help him with the attack modes

and make the space
so he doesn't lose any places.

And da Costa plays
the beautiful team game there

and allows his teammate back through.

Mitch Evans now in the lead.

All he's gotta do here
is take his final attack mode

and stay in the lead to win the title.

Oh, Evans has missed attack mode.

The wheels are coming off the wagon.

It looked a bit tight
on the first sensor.

If you miss one of those two sensors,
it doesn't enable the mode.

Once I went to activate my second attack,
I somehow missed the first loop,

which, uh… yeah, was devastating.

I just saw a win slip away.

So, Mitch Evans
does get the attack mode then,

but it allows Wehrlein through,

and it allows him
the Drivers' Championship for now.

Evans in third place.

It's a tough sport.

You kind of feel like you've got a bit
of a gun at your head every season.

'Cause you just need
to keep on performing.

Evans now four seconds behind.

Every season for the past four years

has just kind of slipped away
from me in different ways.

But it is eating me up now.

And Pascal Wehrlein,
for Porsche,

becomes the 2024
Formula E World Champion…

At the end of the day,

neither of us got the job done
in terms of winning the Championship,

which is a huge shame for Nick and I.

Pascal and Porsche
really deserved it in the end.

They did a fantastic job.

So, full credit to them.

What an end,

and what delight for them.
What disappointment for Jaguar,

for Cassidy, for Evans.

As soon as the race is over,
my whole team is obviously over the moon.

I mean, I'm super happy Pascal won,

but I… I had a direct involvement
with a competitor,

and I just felt like I had to get away.

I had to step away
from those celebrations. I had to.

he was gonna win that race.

He was gonna win the Championship.
I destroyed his dream.

And I told him, "Man, I am so, so sorry."

We both start crying,
and I cannot imagine the pain.

It was one of the worst feelings
I've ever had to… to go through.

That was tough. That was really tough.

I'm obviously very disappointed
right now.

It's utterly heartbreaking.

I'm lost for words with how sad I am.

Yeah, I've been too nice
for a couple of years, and…

Yeah, it's bit me.

This is the most
competitive sport in the world.

The margin for error is virtually zero.
You have to be the best of the best.

It better be me.
No, I don't know. It could be anyone's.

I will still bet on a Jag driver winning
the Championship next season.

I don't know which one.

Well, it's less than 24 hours ago
and I'm here talking to you now.

I know that my seat will always be wanted
by all of the other drivers on that grid.

So, you know,
I will never take this for granted.

That's why I get so angry when I lose,

but it's also why
I get so happy when I win.

In the end of the day, it's just racing.
Putting on a helmet and going racing.

And I'm able to be, on my good day,
one of the best drivers on that field.

So, that's… that's…
