So, um… last year I would say,

in terms of results
and in terms of frustration

was pretty much the same
as the two years prior,

so the last three seasons
have been very, very tough.

I joined the team when it was Nio,
and then it was ERT,

and now, it's Cupra Kiro.

We've always been the smallest team
in terms of budget,

personnel, uh, you know, everything.

The horn is a particularly good feature
on this car.

You just have to learn to laugh
to be honest, like,

it's the only way to deal
with being in the worst car.

I'm hoping we can edit me

Last year in ERT,
loads of other manufacturers

had, sort of, made a bit of a step forward
and we hadn't

'cause, you know, got no money
and I've always known

that I can get good results
if I've got a good enough car.

But, yeah, the la… last three years,
I've obviously not been able to prove it

to anyone and… and most people
only remember your last race.

There are very few championships
on the planet

where drivers are paid
a professional wage,

and Formula E is one of them.
There are only 22 seats.

So, if you don't deliver,
you're going to be booted out.

To be fair to Dan Ticktum,

his journey in Formula E
has not been easy.

They didn't have much money.

Um, they were really, sort of,
struggling when it came to the powertrain.

He didn't have a car
that was gonna bring results.

He was always frustrated.

For Dan Ticktum,
this season, everything changed.

Kiro are now customers of Porsche,

and that means Porsche provide Kiro

with a Porsche powertrain.

It is going to be first blood
for the TAG Heuer Porsche team.

Yet another victory.
It is Porsche who power to the top.

Three wins in a row!

Pascal Wehrlein, for Porsche,

becomes the 2024 Formula E World Champion!

So effectively,

Dan now has the same car
that Pascal Wehrlein had last year.

This season's
a very different story.

Got the right funding, some good partners.

Good technical partnership with Porsche.
So, much more exciting, that's for sure.

Hollywood star Idris Elba
has joined the team

as a new owner and investor.

Kiro, ex-ERT team,
are genuine podium possibilities.

And once they get familiar
with the new car,

they could be pushing for victories.

For Dan Ticktum,
this is the first time in his career,

he's got all the ingredients.

He's suddenly got the team,
he's got the backing,

he's got the car,
he's got the Porsche powertrain.

He says he has the performance.

Now, the pressure is on.
He's got to deliver.

He's got to show the world
that he really can race at the top.

Very excited for this one.
A new circuit,

new challenges for the drivers
in terms of Pit Boost being introduced

for the first time.

Drivers will be coming to a stop
for 30 seconds

and having an extra ten percent's worth
of energy injected into their cars

during the race.

It should be straightforward…

but nothing in motorsport
is straightforward, is it?

Things always go wrong.

P8 in São Paulo and P16 in Mexico,

only four points on the board
then so far for Dan Ticktum.

The first two rounds,
we definitely struggled.

Obviously, we've got quite
a competitive car,

so people will expect some points
and good results.

Final preparations are underway,
drivers are ready to go.

where I'm in a place to score good points

and start proving people wrong.

and I've just got to prove

We're now only a lap or two away

from the unprecedented Pit Boost window
being opened.

There's a lunge on the inside,

I think that may have been da Costa
on Ticktum for seventh place.

This is where Ticktum needs
to play it cool,

I had to reset the car
and that was the race over really,

so very, very frustrating.

I ended up finishing 18th.

That was, sort of, our… our chance
for the first good result of the season.

Out of all the cars on the grid
that needed to reset before the Pit Boost,

it was me. And I was just like…

I think we should have just plugged
the car in and risked it.

And it turns out after the race,

the people that manufactured
the battery said,

"Oh, yeah,
you probably could have just charged

and it would have been all right."

Ticktum not having a race
to remember here tonight.

No points for Kiro.

As a team, we can do it.

But you… you just need to put it together,
in the first two, three races

we were still learning the car.

Hopefully, we will be able
to get him mature in some area…

uh, but you know, Dan is Dan.

Everyone got a strength and weakness,
and my philosophy

is focus in people's strength

and extract their strength
and try to polish their weakness.

We're not doubting about his speed…

if we can get him manageable

he started karting with a dream,

like all young racing drivers,
to one day be crowned as a world champion.

He's come so close
on quite a few occasions.

And Pascal Wehrlein, for Porsche,
becomes the 2024 Formula E World Champion!

To share that moment
with my family…

I remember taking our daughter
into my arms

and seeing her actually celebrate
more than me

and, like, putting her finger up.

That's my favorite memory of…

probably of my life actually.

I love nothing more
than my family and… and being with them,

spending time with her,
seeing her grow up,

learning every day something new.

And it's crazy when I'm like three,
four days away,

I always realize
she has changed again and again.

I would say it's important
to give her the opportunity

to fulfil her dreams.

That's what my parents did. Like, uh…

I was never forced to do anything.

They supported me
with everything they had,

and I will support her
with everything I have.

Hopefully she doesn't want

is every time painful

and it gets more and more painful

the older she gets
and the more she realizes it.

When she's sitting in… in my luggage

Those are the painful moments.

I'm looking forward so much
to go racing again

As a German,
driving for Porsche is a dream.

We are a team with two drivers,

and you want to be better
than the other one,

and the other one wants
to be better than you.

Your teammate
is the ultimate rival.

That is the gauge. That is the only gauge
that you have, ultimately,

and your teammate's success
is your failure.

You've got to beat your teammate first,

and if you're not beating your teammate,
you're definitely not winning.

When I got hired
to come and race for Porsche,

I was a champion.

I was a guy with the best quality average
in Formula E before.

And then I joined Porsche,
and I suck. I'm not doing well.

For a year and a half,
I'm not doing well, right?

And so I got stamped a little bit,
like the number two.

Last season
was a nightmare for António.

He was just not getting the results.

And I really think he was only one more
bad weekend away from getting the chop.

Da Costa going for the outside,
into turn 15, can he do it?

Side by side they go for second,
da Costa gets shoveled out.

So, from attacking to defending,
to losing places there

for António Félix da Costa.

What the fuck?

You know, it's quite obvious that
there's one side of the garage struggling

and one side of the garage not struggling.

Uh, so, if on the eventuality
of changing someone…

it's obvious at the moment
who that would be,

obviously my side of the garage.

Last sector,
he lost three tenths to Pascal.

Three fucking tenths.

Because of my first year
and a half in this team,

there's a stamp of a driver helper
or the water boy.

I've been fighting
to get out of that role.

I guess someday in my career,
I will be okay to say,

It's because
he had the chances mathematically

a tension bubbling away.

to the surface and then it erupts.

at the Sambadrome venue

where carnivals electrify spectators.

This weekend is all about electric power
in single-seater racing cars.

Porsche are going
to be fancying their chances

as Pascal Wehrlein begins
the defense of his world title.

Me and António,

we've been very good
and very strong teammates

the last two seasons.
This year it has been…

different.

In the drivers' parade,
I felt something,

and I don't want to go into detail,

which I was a bit shocked about
and I was very disappointed.

What Pascal thinks happened
did not happen. Not calling him a liar.

I think he's… he's misheard
or misunderstood things.

He got angry, he was very rude,
and that pissed me off.

I confronted him with that, I confronted…

other drivers which
he was talking to with,

…about that situation, and obviously,
I told my team what I heard.

Um… But for me,
that has changed everything.

I helped him get
that number one on his car…

uh, I've showed nothing
but loyalty in the past,

and in the first little mishap
that he thinks that we had…

…he threw it all away.

This thing happened 45 minutes
before the race start,

and I was fuming at Pascal.

There was no time.
There was no time to talk about things.

There was no time to nothing.

In the end of the day,
the team is…

is always bigger than… than the drivers,

and we follow what the team requests,

and we don't have to go
to honeymoon together.

So, Pascal Wehrlein
has now taken the lead

and in fact the other Porsche,
uh, da Costa, up into third place

and it looks like he is now gonna be able
to go past Oliver Rowland.

We've now got a change for the lead
between the two Porsches,

because da Costa going down the inside,

but Pascal Wehrlein will not give it up,
they are racing, this is proper racing,

even at this stage in the race.

We always have a plan.

I would say
we always have multiple plans,

but the plan can quickly change
once you're in the race.

The battle between the two teammates
is not over yet.

It would be counter-intuitive
for the team, surely.

I've had to punch the table
a couple of times and… and say, "No."

is a very unique scenario.

When I hit the ground,
I just tried to squeeze myself

even more into the cockpit

so I don't hit my head again
on the ground.

I saw the sparks flying,
and my first reaction

was to just jump out of the car
as quick as I can,

and, yeah, do the thumbs up
because I was actually worried that, um…

about Sibel, not about myself
because I felt like I was… somehow okay.

There is always danger,
and I'm happy to accept it.

That's what I have done my whole life.

I got transported
to the hospital.

I struggled a couple of days with headache
and… and, yeah, kind of dizziness,

um, and then with the pain, obviously,

but I just wanted to be back home
and be back with my family.

You never wanna see
that to anyone,

that's bad, like it was scary.

My first reaction is, "Is he okay?"
You know, like, "Is he hurt?"

And thankfully he wasn't,
so when I knew that he wasn't hurt,

and we still had, whatever it was,
six or seven laps to… to race,

or eight laps to race, you know,
helmet back on,

close the visor and… and we go and try--

Let's go try and win that race,
and we finished second.

But if I go a step back…

Actually, Pascal's the one
who created that.

He ended upside down because of himself.

A lot of the crashes have happened
because people decide to go three-wide

and then a shunt is gonna happen,
it's been happening in more races.

Huh?

Growing up,
my dad always told me, like,

"Either do it well or don't do it."

You know, Portugal used to be
a small country in mentality.

You know, I remember
when we were competing

at the World Cup of football,
or the Olympics, or whatever it would be,

it's like, "Okay, we qualified,"
and everybody would celebrate, like,

just competing was good enough.

And my dad always said,
"No, that's not the mentality."

Like, why… why can't we go
and why can't we try to win?

Yeah, nice, huh?

Our project now
is to prepare a horse

and be selected to go
to the Olympics representing Portugal.

We love to compete.

- We liked to be compared and to compete…
- Yeah.

…and I think it's part of the game,
is to compete and challenge

that our horses can beat
the other horses, you know?

Whenever I'm not winning
and I'm just a competitor on track,

like, I'm not having any fun with that,
and it actually affects the way I behave.

You know, I… I don't know how to…
how to be someone who's just a number.

Porsche and Pascal
are like pretty lethal combo in Mexico.

He's won it the last two years,
and he's on pole there every time.

In my mind I was like,
"If I can beat him there

then that's a pretty big statement
for me."

And I'm like, "Okay, this is now the time
to put an end to this shit and…

plant my flag here."

Pascal was asking to swap positions with,
you know, four laps to go,

and luckily that message
never came through, to be honest, because…

I didn't see a reason for that to happen,
not in the second race of the year,

not when I'm, you know,

I had a better season start than…
than him.

This would be one of the ones
I would love to have a go in one day.

My life is 99 percent racing
and one percent everything else.

So, I would like to be someone
as dedicated and as committed

as what Senna was.

His life was racing and racing only,
which is exactly how my life is right now.

who's kind of like a baby-faced assassin.

He's very ruthless in the car,

This guy's potentially gonna have you

but, uh, he's certainly got
his elbows well out there into turn one.

Oliver Rowland has cleared off
nearly three seconds in front.

So, it's a fight for second position.

Wehrlein managed to get
his way through from the doldrums

into eighth place ahead of Dan Ticktum,

a couple of points on the board
for Cupra Kiro

and for the TAG Heuer Porsche team.

I think Rowland, tactically,
just played it better.

They have… They have the same powertrain,
the same efficiency in theory,

but I think Rowland,
just using experience.

We have to remember, Barnard,

this is now, what,
his sixth Formula E race?

And he's got three podiums
in four races this year.

Barnard's been outstanding.

A very aggressive drive to second place.

I still remember being 12 or 13,

wondering if I would ever drive
a race car,

let alone if I'd ever, you know,
be successful, or be a decent race driver.

Taylor's been
an absolute revelation.

He was on no one's radar

and fair play to him, he found his way,

but he's done it confidently,

he's sure of himself
without being arrogant.

He is just a results machine.

And for somebody of that age
with much less experience

than some of the gnarly old veterans
that are in Formula E now,

it's just exceptional, what he's doing.

Of course, I wanted to win,

but I didn't expect to be starting on pole
and win the race.

I was happy that I was still
in the top three,

and that was… that was good for me.

On the podium, when you're standing there,
you have your whole team in front of you,

it's a very proud moment,
it's a moment of relief.

People now expect him
to be at the sharp end

and challenging for podiums and wins.

Just 20 years of age, second place,
his best finish in Formula E.

Surely that top step of the podium,
it's only a matter of when and not if.
