About 15 years ago, I was starting my career,

and I-- we were having a hard time

and Toby Keith was the guy that called and said,

- Once again, superstar and humanitarian Darius Rucker.

- The only thing bigger than Toby's talent

and personality was his heart.

His fans and friends consider ourselves lucky

to have had him, but there are thousands of others

who feel truly blessed that Toby was around.

When disaster struck, troops were far from home,

or children were in need, Toby was there.

Here's just a small part of his extraordinary work.

[acoustic music]

- The OK Kids Korral, it's my greatest achievement

ever outside of my family.

- We started our foundation when a band member

lost their daughter to cancer.

She was diagnosed just after she turned two

and died just before she turned three.

So my husband felt the need to do something.

- It took me ten years to get the money,

but we built the OK Kids Korral.

It's a 16-room Ritz-Carlton meets Disney World.

We take care of about 300 families a year,

and it's directly across the street from

the Children's Medical Center.

- Toby always had a vision with the OK Kids Korral.

He wanted the kids to be able to come and forget

that they're being treated and having to be

at the hospital all the time.

So it became a home away from home for these kids.

- While children are undergoing treatment,

families stay here free of charge

during that entire cancer journey.

We know that during a cancer diagnosis,

it is really important to have family around you

to help you through it.

- You can tell how much OK Kids Korral meant to Toby

when he was in this building.

OK Kids Korral has taken care of me as well

and my family in the hardest of times.

- Whoa!

- On December 7th, his birthday,

doctors came in and told us that he had leukemia.

- If we had to stay in a hotel--

we've been here 30 times--

we would burn through everything we have.

- There is all walks of life that come in

and out of this door that are dealing with

the same thing that you are.

You become part of a family.

That's pretty important.

- He just lit up every time he came down here.

And the kids, they don't know who Toby is.

The parents do. The kids don't care.

You know, he's just Toby.

- The first thing I thought of when I got cancer was,

"Who's gonna take care of the Korral?

"Who's gonna raise the money? Who will carry that torch?"

- In the United States, childhood cancer

affects 42 kids a day.

There's always gonna need to be an OK Kids Korral.

- We thank God all the time that he decided

to put Toby Keith on this earth.

- Toby has big shoes to fill,

but we're all ready to take on that effort.

I saw Porter Wagoner at the mall in broad daylight

in a sequin jacket and a hat

with a little cowboy hat propped up on his little--

I don't know if that was a perm or a wig.

I don't know what that was.

And then, y'all, I got to see Barbara Mandrell

and Louise Mandrell.

I know.

They were at Dillard's buying bras and panties.

And I was just starstruck, and my heart

was beating out of my body,

and they had fannies the size of walnuts

and were buying tiny panties,

but all that meant so much to me.

And then I grow up, and I get to be here,

and I want to tell y'all that I got to see Toby Keith,

one of his last performances at the People's Choice

Country Awards, and he blew me away.

He genuinely wanted to make this life a little bit better,

to make people smile,

and I think we can all say, mission accomplished.

Man, Toby was a cowboy in the best sense of the word.

Always a gentleman and always down to help

those who needed it the most.

That's why tonight's event benefits not one,

but two great organizations helping children

in need of critical care--

Toby's OK Kids Korral in Oklahoma

and Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital

at Vanderbilt, which is near and very dear to my heart.

I wanted to show y'all some of the great work

that they are doing right here in Nashville.

- When a 75-foot tree came crashing down

on Judge and Jeff, my whole world

came crashing down with it.

After two weeks of Judge being in a coma

and in intensive care

at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital

at Vanderbilt, our care team,

who had become like family to us,

told me he was stabilized.

- And that he was ready to start

his rehabilitation journey.

- To see Judge now running and swimming,

hiking is a total dream come true.

Funds from tonight's show will continue the work

OK Kids Korral does in Oklahoma and will help Monroe Carell

Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt

build the first inpatient rehabilitation center

- Toby reflected the best of Oklahoma.

A lot of people dream of making it big

so they can leave their hometown.

Toby wanted to make his hometown bigger,

and when he made it big,

he took the whole state with him.

When I was around him, he was a badass country singer,

but I found out later on he had a really big heart,

as big as Oklahoma.

- Toby's talent and ambition took him around the world,

but his heart never left Oklahoma.

One of my favorite conversations with Toby

took place on his tour bus one night

at the Grand Ole Opry.

That conversation was largely centered

on our similar hometown roots.

We spoke of how we both grew up, our families,

and why we both love the Sooner State so much.

[cheers and applause]

He took Moore, Oklahoma, with him wherever he went.

You heard it in his songs.

You could feel it in his swagger,

and you saw it in his charity work.

Toby would be the first one to tell you that Oklahoma

made him the man that he was.

And I'll be the first to tell you

that he more than made his mark on Oklahoma as well.

- Are we ready?

No matter where I go, if they ask me where I'm from,

I'll say Moore, and if they want to know where it is,

I'll tell them it's a southern suburb of Oklahoma City.

It's home to me.

The earliest memories I have of music are crawling around

on the floor and listening to my 23-year-old mom

singing Patsy Cline and how powerful it sounded.

Some music was always woven in,

but I started football at such a young age.

By the time I got to ninth grade,

I had already played seven years.

Just fresh out of high school,

playing semi-pro ball two years.

And then my dad had a big job waiting

for me in the oil fields.

It was just hard work, and it made a man out of me.

And then about '83, the oil boom crashed.

And I mean, we really hit hard times.

Music was just a hobby.

So I was writing songs to thrill myself.

And I'm standing there 21, 22 years old going,

"What am I gonna do with my life?"

The band said, "Let's take it on the road."

And it was about ten years before I really wrote

something that was worthy to play in front of somebody.

[upbeat country rock music]

So I became a songwriter.

* Should've been a cowboy *

* I should've learned to rope *

My first three or four albums,

I was doing what they told me to do.

- You don't look unnatural at all.

- Really? - No.

- But I was still kind of a B artist,

but I had a album that I really believed in.

I was like, "I'm gonna start dressing out of my closet,

start singing my song." And then my career went--

boom-- into the stratosphere.

If you keep just doing what you do

and stay true to it,

every now and then, it jumps up and rewards you.

Everywhere I go, from Iraq to Japan,

people know that I am a face of Oklahoma.

I never felt good about moving to another city

and living there.

When I'm on tour, I'm out in the rest of the U.S.,

and when I'm home, I'm raising my family.

And that's the best thing that's ever happened to me.

on the audience that evening.

With 3,000 United States Marines

and sailors waiting with great anticipation...

and he'd get a standing ovation.

And the rest is history.
