(film reel whirring)

(gentle music)

(animals chittering)

(camera clicking)

(animals growling)

- Come.

- [Madhu] Brother.

(tense music)

(tiger crying)

(tiger growling)

- Give it.

(tiger growling)

(Madhu gasps)

- Brother, it's bad luck, it's bad luck, brother.

- Come on, move towards the boat,

shut up and let's go. - Brother.

- Come on, come on, start walking.

Come on, Madhu, move it.

Come on, follow me, Madhu.

- Brother. - Good buddy,

we'll take care of you.

(mysterious music)

(people chattering)

- [Madhu] Stop, stop, brothers.

Brothers, please.

Wait, wait.

- [Man] Listen to what he has to say.

- Please.

- [Man] All right, all right, calm down, calm down.

- Sit down. - Okay, fine.

- Sit down, listen to me, you gotta trust me, trust me.

- [Man] There is nothing to trust,

call that man outside. - What do we trust?

How do we trust?

(tiger growls)

- Nice and easy, there you go, good boy.

That's a good boy.

Come on, come on, drink up now, have some more, no?

Who's a good boy, you're a good boy.

Ah (smooches).

(laughs)

- [Warden] Mr. Uday.

- Warden, ma'am, Warden Madame.

You are not going to believe this.

Of a thousand tiger cubs, hardly one is likely to be white

and we have one right here.

Take a look, please come.

Can you believe this, a white tiger cub in the Sundarbans.

Just look at it.

Amazing, isn't it? (laughs)

- I'd only heard of white tiger sightings

but I never, ever... (tiger growls)

- So.

(man laughs)

- You were given a permit for photography only

in the Sundarbans tiger zone.

Who gave you the permission to bring the white cub

out of the core territory?

Guards.

- Hey, hey, wait a minute, wait a minute.

- On the one hand, we have the whole world

crying out save the tigers, save the tiger

and now when I've actually rescued this white tiger cub

you're telling me it's illegal?

Illegal is what those people were doing

who they had this poor thing wire trapped in the forest.

Madame, I saved this little thing.

If you want to catch somebody, catch those poachers

for heaven sake!

- I am fully aware of what my duties as a warden are.

(Uday scoffs)

Let's go.

- Come on.

What is wrong with you?

I was only trying to help!

God damn it!

This is wrong!

Damn you!

(mysterious music)

(tiger growls) (tense music)

Sundarbans diaries, day 33.

Who is in the wrong?

The poachers who kill the tigers

or those who buy their carcasses for profit?

(tiger growls)

Today I saved a white tiger cub.

The poor thing was caught in a wire trap.

So that some coward could kill its mother.

Yet when I brought the cub to the village,

all the villagers were vying for its blood.

People here fear the tiger's shadow

more than the tiger itself.

(rattling) (photographer gasps)

(tiger growls)

(electricity buzzes)

Ah.

(tiger growls)

But right now, my thoughts are with the cub's mother.

She must be searching through the entire jungle

for her child.

(dramatic music) (tiger growls)

(ominous music)

(tiger growls)

(chattering) (mysterious music)

- Where is my brother's body?

Why don't you answer me?

Where's my brother's body, huh?

Why doesn't anyone say anything?

Tell me why you're quiet!

- How much do you really know about the Sundarbans?

This is 4,264 kilometers of dense jungle

which lies squarely between India and Bangladesh.

What if she's taken your brother's body

far across the river into Bangladesh by now, huh?

Animals couldn't care less about borders.

They don't need passports and visas to get through.

What could we do, we can't keep chasing after it forever.

And the only people who can enter the Sundarbans

are those who have some knowledge of its canals and jungles.

Outsiders are never given permission.

- If you just did your job at the time

and sent out a search team,

then I wouldn't need to listen to all of this nonsense

and you wouldn't need to lecture me.

- Mr. Singh, I'm here to save the tiger not kill it.

For many years, these animals have been treated

with utmost cruelty.

The Sundarbans is a World Heritage Site.

This is a reserve where the largest number of tigers

have survived and their survival is my responsibility.

In 1973, the newly formed Project Tiger officially

declared the tiger a protected species.

Killing them is illegal.

- And killing a man is not illegal?

It killed my brother, isn't that illegal?

Do you realize you're defending a man-eater...

- And that is another misconception of yours.

Every tiger is not a man-eater, you know.

Most of the time they attack in self defense.

Sundarbans is the home of the tiger.

For example, what if someone were to enter your home

and attack you and your family?

Wouldn't you fight back and perhaps even kill

in self defense, huh?

Mr. Singh, even if I tried, I cannot help you,

the case is closed.

- What, what do you mean the case is closed?

What was my brother's fault, huh?

He saved the tiger cub from the poachers, god damn it!

My brother was innocent!

(door clunks)

- Sir, I have already packed Mr. Uday's bags.

I was his guide, you know.

- What do you want?

- The tigress' attack on your brother was so sudden

and she dragged him into the deep jungle, Pundit.

- How the hell do you know my call sign in the army?

- Sir, Mr. Uday used to talk so much about you, you know

He's the one who told me you're a commander in the army.

Sir, really.

Uday, sir, was not only my guru,

but my friend too.

- (laughs) And you could do nothing to help him.

Uday saved the cub from the poachers, didn't he?

What the hell was wrong with that?

- Well if animals had so much intelligence

then who would value humans?

(mysterious music)

(object clattering)

(man growls) (drums pounding)

(woman gasps)

Here we believe that Bonbibi is the deity of the forest.

- I just want to teach you a lesson.

When my children have done nothing to you,

then why do you harass them?

(ominous music)

- The young men of this area go into the deep forest

looking for firewood and to fish in the reserve territory

where they come under tiger attacks.

There's so many widows here that they have built

an entire village of their own.

- People often become victims of tiger attacks here.

Sometimes more than hundred killings are recorded in a year.

- So what are you suggesting, that I pack my bags

and just walk away from here?

- The place where your brother was attacked by the tigress

was searched very thoroughly

which is why finding your brother's body

is next to impossible.

The rising tides must have washed away

its pad marks long ago.

- [Pundit] I want to find my brother's body.

(tiger growls)

So I can perform his last rites.

What was my brother's fault, huh?

He saved the tiger cub from the poachers, god damn it!

- [Woman] I just want to teach you a lesson.

- Brother Singh, wildlife photographer

is my younger brother, was.

(intense dance music)

I want to kill that white tigress.

- There are three things you're going to need

to kill the tigress.

A lot of ammunition,

an experienced tracker,

and a great team.

The tigress is very intelligent.

She was able to track Mr. Uday all the way

from the canal to his house.

(intense dance music)

No one goes into the Sundarbans alone.

Whether it's a fisherman or a woodcutter

or even a honey gatherer.

- Topography, there are 102 islands here.

Every six hours when the tide rises,

30% of the land is submerged underwater.

Weather conditions, tropical rainforest

90% relative humidity, even if you control your heart rate

and slow your pulse down like a yogi,

you still won't stop sweating.

And Cheena. - Hm?

- You'll be glad to know

there are no mosquitoes or leeches here.

'Cause Sundarbans floats on saltwater

and just so we're clear,

this is a personal mission.

If you have any objection or anything against this idea,

this is the time to leave.

- [CJ] What, this is what you have to say to me

first thing in the morning?

- Because I'm always right.

- Whatever. - Yeah, baby.

- [Sufi] CJ, Hero, enough.

- [Girl] Tell him not to start this again.

- [Sufi] Come on.

(engine rumbling)

(gentle music)

Pundit, all clear. - Good.

- Pundit. - Thanks.

- Uday wasn't just your little brother,

he was ours too, you know.

Every one of us can give our lives for you.

And here we're talking about taking a life.

That too of a wild animal.

- Still, Sufi.

It feels like a burden, you know.

I'm worried I'm getting you all into trouble.

- Come on, dude.

This dangerous part is like a walk in a park.

In the company of friends we are never in the dark.

So don't ever think of your problems

as a burden on your friends

'cause true friends will never leave you in the dark.

Always a team, Captain. - Sure.

(gentle music)

(whistling)

(tense music)

- She is Jhumpa, our tracker.

- [Pundit] Hm.

- Hey Kashmiri, who's the mami, brother?

- I don't know.

- Jumping into our lives, Jhumpa.

(tense electronic music)

- Yeah. - What the hell

has she found there?

- [Sufi] Nothing you'd get, stud.

- Just how two people's fingerprints can never

be exactly the same, you'll find that tiger paw marks

are also never similar to each other.

- [Teammate] Hey, CJ, come into the water, let's chill.

Come over!

- How can I get clean with that dirt bag in the water?

- [Teammate] Princess for the day, you haven't even bathed

for 10 days!

- [Uday] Brother, there's more danger in the cities

than in the jungles.

- [Pundit] Uday, keep your philosophies

for your diary, okay?

Neither do I understand what you're saying

nor do I want to.

(tense electronic music)

- [Hero] Hey, jumping Jhumpa, how much further?

- We should go this way.

(animals chittering)

- Follow the map and find some crab.

- (speaks in foreign language) why do you have

to play with shit, man?

โ™ช You wanna play it on the beat in my chopper โ™ช

โ™ช Wanna pull it up against a strap, yeah โ™ช

โ™ช I'mma show you who the boss is โ™ช

โ™ช All I know is I ain't gonna take another loss, yeah โ™ช

- Why is she fiddling around with leaves?

- This is a kiral tree, if I can't reach out

to these leaves, then it's quite likely

that a deer can't either.

If that's the case, then there are no deer here

and that means that...

- It means there are no tigers here either.

- [CJ] Okay, you know what, I've had enough of this,

I'm done talking to you!

- Look, CJ, you're the one... - Whatever!

- Who started this argument, okay?

Now why can't you accept it?

What Sud did was the right thing.

He took the right decision.

- Oh yeah. - Brother?

Oh, brother.

- Do you guys have any idea where to find the tigers?

- Sir, Jhumpa is Sundarbans' top most tracker.

Whoever has come here to make documentaries

have always found tigers.

(gentle music)

(CJ grunts)

- I'll shoot down both politicians

and before the bullets even hit them, I'll be gone.

- Kashmiri, you're going to be a father.

(Kashmiri sighs)

Now you have to live your life for your child.

Stop thinking about all this nonsense.

If anyone else said it, I would've laughed it off.

But the problem with you is you do what you say.

Think before you speak.

- [Kashmiri] Family, children, worrying about this

has made us a nation of spineless losers.

(engine rumbles)

(animals chittering)

- [Hero] CJ, Sud did the right thing, okay?

- [CJ] I don't care what you have to say.

Sud was wrong and that's final.

- Oh, no, no, no, no, Sud was right

and Hero's always right...

- Hey guys, hey guys. - What?

- Time out, time out. - That's fine.

- You guys are neither right and nor are you wrong.

What do you think?

That Central Naval Command didn't know,

that that night when our ships sank

and the sailors are all in the water?

Huh?

And remember, in the War of 1971,

there were many decisions like this

that were highly questionable.

CJ, just stop this argument now.

- [Hero] Leave it, man, she won't understand.

- [Sufi] And Hero, you too.

Keep quiet and do your work.

- Sufi. - Yes, Pundit.

- Where iS Jhumpa?

- Jhumpa, she was right here.

- Cheena, let's go, hurry. - Right.

(men grunting)

- Easy, easy, big guy.

- [Sufi] Where did Jhumpa go?

- Oh, jumping Jhumpa, she's gone away.

(animals chittering)

(suspenseful music)

(dramatic music)

(men grunting)

- [Man] Heave, heave!

Up, higher!

Hold! (men grunting)

(guns cocking)

(CJ whistles)

(guns cocking)

- Sir, if you want to trap the tigress,

then where's the bait here?

(Madhu gasps)

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, sir, no, sir,

no, no, sir, no, no, no, no, no, sir...

- Madhu. - Please, sir.

I'm not even married yet, sir.

I can't die like this. - Madhu.

Madhu. - No, sir, please.

- Nothing will happen to you.

But you're only going to do what I tell you to do

and nothing more than that, you get it?

Madhu! (Madhu wails)

You have my word, I will not let you fall prey

to the tigress, okay?

Cheena. - Hm.

Come here.

Listen, tough guy, you're going to be absolutely safe.

Just think of it as a big old pussycat.

Now don't trip this wire and you need to remember

one more thing.

When the tigress follows you inside,

that's when you trip that wire and run.

The door drops down and the tigress gets strapped.

Now get in. (Madhu wails)

- [Madhu] Sir, the tigress won't get anything

out of me, sir.

- But we'll get our hands on her, won't we?

Get in there, you'll be fine.

- That should do it.

(birds squawking)

(tense music)

- Fire.

(suspenseful music)

(tiger growls)

(solemn music)

- Stay here.

- Madhu, come here.

Stay here. (Madhu whimpers)

(tense music)

(tiger growls)

- Where is she?

- I don't know, there's no sign of her.

(tiger roaring)

(beeping)

(Madhu gasps)

(dramatic music)

(tiger growls)

(Madhu gasps)

- (gasps) Brother! (tiger growls)

(Madhu shouts)

(rumbling) (Madhu screams)

- She's leaving! (shouting)

- Pundit. (tiger roaring)

(rumbling)

(dramatic music)

(men groaning)

- It was a perfect trap, I just don't understand

how such a secure bamboo trap broke away so easily.

She ripped it apart like if it was paper.

What is this beast we're up against, man.

- She turned out to be way more powerful than we thought.

So next time, we'll have to be much better prepared.

(Kashmiri grunts)

- [Jhumpa] What's going on Jhumpa?

- [Madhu] Jhumpa!

- What the hell are we doing here, tell me, huh.

- [Madhu] Jhumpa, listen.

- [Jhumpa] Why the hell did you lie to me?

- [Madhu] Jhumpa listen to me.

- I know these people aren't here to shoot

the white tiger on film, they're here to shoot her to death.

- Do you need the money or not?

Aren't you here for the money, too, tell me.

These people need a great tracker

and you're the best one there is.

- Yes, what you're saying is true

but I'm a tracker only for those people

who make documentary films about tigers

and I do this only so that the whole world can appreciate

the beauty of Sundarbans' wildlife.

How can you let them kill tigers, brother?

- You want to go back, then go,

but just remember one thing.

Even if you walk away, it's not going

to change their mission.

You decide.

- I don't get it.

Why are you so keen to help them with this, huh?

- Sir, tea? - There's one thing

I don't understand.

I mean we were all there.

It could've attacked any one of us.

Then why did it go for you?

You were right at the other end.

Is that a blood stain, I didn't know you were hurt.

- No, no, sir, actually this isn't my blood.

This blood is from the tiger cub that Uday sir saved.

(dramatic tone)

- A tiger's sense of smell is 10 times more powerful

than a human's, especially when it comes to their enemies.

- What's her problem?

- Well...

Sir, you see, I haven't yet told Jhumpa anything

about your mission.

- So?

- She's totally against the killing of tigers.

- (laughs) Against it (laughs).

Why don't you take her to the village of those widows.

Let her see how the lives of those women

have been ruined, how they suffer.

Go and explain to her,

tell her your deity couldn't save their fathers,

brothers or husbands.

And then ask her, Jhumpa, if she's still against

the killing of tigers.

- But, sir, Jhumpa's mother also lives

in that same widow's village.

(mysterious music)

(water sloshes)

- [Hero] Yes, yes, yes, come to daddy, come to daddy,

yes, come along, come along.

Hey Cheena, I'm coming!

- [Cheena] Oh, don't get too close.

- Come on, come on, come on.

(laughs) Yes, yes, yes.

(Cheena shouts) (animal squeals)

(Madhu gasps)

- Lunch.

- If I hadn't run up and down, up and down

the stupid forest and made the boar run toward you

then how would you have killed it?

And buddy, ever watch car rallies?

The full credit of the win goes to the driver

but it's actually the navigator who guides him to victory.

I'm the navigator, buddy, which is why I'm showing

you the way, follow me. - Hey genius.

We're not here to attend a car rally,

we're here to catch a tigress.

- I'll shoot the tigress.

(imitates bullets firing)

Just two rounds, got it.

(gun cocking)

- Kashmiri.

Is the engine working now?

(Kashmiri sighs) (Hero cheers)

- What up, macho man?

Wow, Cheena, my boy. - What happened?

- [Hero] What a kill, we got lunch for everybody, enjoy.

Hey, Kashmiri, why are you so down, huh?

- The engine's PDM is dead.

Without tools, I can't do anything about it.

- [Hero] There's always a solution, brother, it's very easy.

Tie this boat to the other one and then we tow it.

Solved it, how's that for an idea, CJ?

- What?

Why do you always have the most stupid ideas?

- Hey, why do you always pick a fight with me?

Crazy Jenny, I don't know why she has a problem with me.

- Sir. - Yeah.

- There is another way out.

- Brother, no.

- Jhumpa, are we going to swim out of here, shut up.

- No, brother.

- [Man] Any luck?

- Sir, I know of a honey gatherers' village quite close by.

I'm sure that they have many boats

who transport all the honey they collected

all the way into town.

They'll be able to give us all the spare parts we need.

- How far is it from here?

- Ah, two to three hours more or less.

- All right, let's go, what are we waiting for?

- The tide, sir.

(dramatic music)

Here.

(bees buzzing)

This is their wedding ritual.

Before they tie the knot, these women try

to understand what kind of hardships their men go through

just to earn a living for their families.

Every bride in this village

has to go through this rite of passage.

(bride whimpers)

- You idiots, why are you looking at me like that?

The bride is over there, not here.

(ominous music)

Hey!

- Hey, stop it! - Don't move.

- Sir, wait. - Hey, stop, stop!

- Brother, this is the Galgeti tribe.

They carry born baby's blessings with them.

They can move like a gust of wind

through the jungle

and they can hide anywhere by camouflaging themselves.

Even the tigers have never been able to hunt them.

They're protectors of the jungle.

They've come to the wedding to give their blessings.

(bees buzzing) (tense music)

- Five or six of them, they seem dangerous.

Yes, ma'am, they have weapons.

- Yeah, yeah, Tabu, turn around, turn around, that way.

(tense music)

Over there!

(group chattering)

- [Man] Come on, let's go.

(motor rumbling)

- What's that, Madhu, huh?

- There are stories that we've heard.

The locals say they're just like Dansing's music

could bring down showers of rain.

It seems when all the tigers of the Sundarbans

come together, they let out such a groan.

- Groan?

- Yes, it causes the whole world to tremble

and stirs the mist high up to the heavens.

The local fishermen believe crossing this mist

brings bad luck.

This is where the core territory begins.

Whoever has ventured into this core territory has

never, ever made it back again.

(ominous music)

(dramatic music)

(engine rumbling)

- Brother, here.

(birds squawking)

(gentle music)

(CJ whistles)

- Pundit, the wind is good.

- Let's get her up.

- [CJ] Flying time two hours, radio tuned to channel six.

- [Pundit] Roger that, CJ.

Good luck.

- [CJ] See you from the flip side.

- [Hero] Go, CJ, enjoy.

(propellers whirring)

(group chattering) - Go for it!

- Way to go! (cheering)

(birds squawking)

- Hey, CJ, do you prefer the ground or the clouds?

- Are you kidding me? - Not at all.

- Yo, CJ, look at you soar like a wild boar up in the sky.

(majestic music)

- [Kashmiri] CJ, CJ, what's your position?

- [CJ] Kashmiri, my position is 36 degrees north

and no sighting.

- [Kashmiri] Okay, copy that.

(birds squawking)

- Kashmiri, I see something, I see something.

- CJ?

(birds screaming)

- No! - CJ, what's happening?

- No! - CJ, are you okay?

- [CJ] No! (screams)

- CJ, come in.

CJ, come in!

(CJ shouts)

(mumbles) I'm going down, do you copy, do you copy,

I'm going down!

(muffled radio speaking)

(CJ screams)

- CJ!

(CJ breathes heavily)

(suspenseful music)

Pundit!

(dramatic music)

(animals chittering)

(tapping)

(ominous music)

(tense electronic music)

(CJ screams) (men grunt)

(tense electronic music)

(shouting)

โ™ช Wow โ™ช

(grunting)

(man shouting)

- You not good.

Set it, set it up!

(weapon clicks)

I thought you'd be perfect for a little tumble

in the jungle.

Instead you turn this into rumble in the jungle!

- You're messing with the wrong person.

(weapons clicking)

You'll pay for this, buddy.

(tense music)

(man laughing)

(men grunting)

(gun cocking)

- CJ, are you all right?

- I'm okay, no sweat, Pundit.

- So many men, so many weapons.

Want to hunt the Sundarban tiger,

my name is Bheera, I'm the greatest poacher around here.

Want to meet me halfway?

- I want to make you meet your maker.

- Hey, Bheera, you think these people are like you?

- What did you say? (men chatter)

You are more loyal to foreigners than your own people, eh?

Hey!

(beeping)

- [Pundit] CJ, how far?

- [CJ] 1,000 yards.

- Here's a chance to make 100% profits, sir.

- Shut up.

- There are three, Pundit, there's three of them.

(tense music)

- How far are they now?

- 600 yards, tell me the plan.

- The rest of the ammo is back on the boat.

- [Pundit] What we have is enough.

- That intelligence and power now into three.

Come on, we're like sitting ducks.

- Look, CJ, you'd better cool it.

Pundit will decide what is to be done.

Let them come, we can take them on.

- They're coming in fast, they're coming from behind.

(snaps fingers)

- Positions! - Kashmiri.

(weapons clattering)

(beeping)

- [Bheera] To drive, we must first survive.

- If we stay with these people, we'll be dead meat, run!

- Let's get out of here. - Run for your life!

Come on, run! - Bunch of friggin' cowards.

- They're locals, they're poachers.

Killing tigers is their profession and yet they ran away.

In spite of our weapons and our presence,

they still sense danger.

Let's not be foolish, guys, everybody back to base, go.

- Copy that.

(intense music)

- Go. - Come on, let's move it!

Go!

- [Pundit] Madhu, get up.

- [Man] CJ, follow us.

- [Hero] Come on, run fast, run fast, everybody come on.

(man screams) (tiger roars)

- Halt.

- All clear. - Move, move.

(tense music)

(man screams) (tiger roars)

Move fast.

Move.

Move!

(tiger roars)

(Bheera grunts)

- CJ?

(tiger growls)

CJ. - Brother, brother.

No, brother, brother, there's no way you can help her

on your own, brother.

Come, come, we'll come back with the rest

of the team, brother.

No, no, brother. - You let me go, Madhu.

- Please, please listen to me.

- CJ! - Brother!

- Yes, come, come.

Come.

(tiger growls)

- Please don't do this, stop!

(CJ screams)

(tiger growls)

(ominous music)

(CJ screams) (tiger roars)

(heart beating) (Kashmiri breathes heavily)

(Hero cries)

(Hero screams)

(solemn music)

- [CJ] Madhu, how did these tigers become man-eaters?

- [Madhu] There are different stories explaining this.

The main reason being dead bodies.

Some people believe that dead bodies floating

down the Ganga often end up on these mud banks

and it is also believed that every year

the destruction from the cyclones leave behind a trail

of dead bodies that also end up at the mud banks

of the Sundarbans and whenever the tigers fail

to find a prey, they resort to feeding on these dead bodies.

(Kashmiri shouts)

- Kashmiri, the engine stopped working.

(engine rumbles) (Kashmiri grunts)

(dramatic music)

(Kashmiri grunts)

(tiger growls)

- [Pundit] What is it?

(tense music)

(tiger growls)

- Ah, damn.

The engine's failed again.

Call Hero and tell him the boat's not running.

- Hero, come in.

Hero, come in, Hero?

(radio mumbles) - The signal's breaking up.

- Switch to channel nine.

- Cheena, come in, come in, Cheena.

Cheena, come in, hello.

- Just see if you can do something, give it one more shot.

- I'll try and do something, let's see.

(water sloshes)

(dramatic music)

(tiger growls)

(tiger roars)

- Sufi, turn the boat around, go, now!

- Madhu, Madhu, over here, come on!

Go, go, go! - Come on!

- Push it back, push it back.

(Kashmiri shouts)

(tiger roars)

(tiger growls)

(tense music)

- Come on! - Sufi, start the engine!

(tiger growling)

- Come on, Sufi, come on!

- Faster, faster, faster! - Sufi!

- Turn right, turn right!

- [Pundit] Jhumpa.

Jhumpa.

(Cheena groans) - Cheena.

(tigers roar)

- Open! (guns firing)

(dramatic music)

(tiger growls)

(tiger roars)

(tiger roars)

(solemn music)

- Have you ever asked my sister what name she would prefer?

And if you have a girl, will you...

Name her Shazir?

- If it's a girl, I'll name her Sufiana, my friend.

- (laughs) Sufiana (laughs).

My sister's a widow now, Pundit.

Her child has become fatherless even before being born.

What am I to say to her, huh?

Chutkey, my sister, I did everything I could

to save (speaks in foreign language).

Or should I tell her that those friggin' tigers over there

tore (speaks in foreign language) apart,

while we just stood there

like impotent idiots and watched!

Just stood there and watched!

- (speaks in foreign language) I know it's

a lot easier said than done,

but you're the one who has to console your sister.

- Yes, but how do I console her?

I have absolutely no idea.

It's not like I can say

that he died fighting for his country, right?

- [Uday] Sundarbans diaries, day 21.

For how long will we can continue to destroy

this beautiful forest?

It is only if we surrender to the Earth's intelligence.

Could we rise up, rooted like the trees?

(engine rumbles)

(tense music)

- Ration zero, only three bottles of water left.

Damn it.

Ammunition, damn!

- Sir, I don't think we can win this fight, sir.

Please believe me, we should just go back now.

- Shut up, Madhu!

You bloody civilian!

Until I see that tigress die with my own eyes,

neither will I leave from here,

nor will I die that easily, do you understand that?

- Be sensible, Pundit.

What Madhu says is not wrong.

You should consider his...

- Jhumpa you have absolutely no idea

what I'm going through right now, so just stay out of this!

(grunts)

- What?

You think I have no idea.

Pundit, you have only lost a brother.

These tigers killed my father and my brother

when I was very young.

You think I don't understand?

It is you who doesn't understand, Pundit.

These were your men who died only because of you.

If it wasn't for your personal vendetta,

your friends wouldn't have to be here

and Kashmiri and CJ would still be alive.

There's still time, give up this mission and.

- Jhumpa, you were alone and helpless

and you were unarmed, so maybe you didn't feel

the thirst for revenge.

- Don't you see the difference?

Between animal and man.

You have the gift of speech, you can talk, you can ask.

The tigress can't do that.

All that the poor thing could understand was this.

That Uday had stolen his cub and taken it home with him

and it is only for the sake of her child

that the mother went... - I've made my decision.

I'm not leaving this jungle until I kill that tiger.

- How?

While you are unable to see her,

she is definitely watching you.

You've tried to hunt her and failed miserably.

Yet she has begun to hunt us down one by one.

Pundit, the hunters themselves have now become the hunted.

- Yeah, you're right.

We are unable to see her but she is watching us.

We haven't been able to hunt her down,

but she has started to hunt us.

If that's the case, we change our strategy.

Guys, I've got a plan.

She's attacked us where we least expected her to.

Before we could do anything, before we could retaliate.

She jumped into the canal and escaped.

The Sundarbans canals are her greatest strength

and our greatest weakness and we have to turn

this weakness into our advantage.

This time the hunter will hunt.

Hero, you, be near the border with Madhu and Jhumpa

because if this time, somehow if she manages

to escape the trap, she'll head straight for the canal.

Just shoot it tight!

- But how can we be so sure that the same tigers

will come and attack us?

- 'Cause this time, I'm sure.

Her emotions will be her bait.

- What makes you say that?

(animal chittering)

(bird squawking)

- Hey, jumping Jhumpa.

- Yeah?

- Do you have a sister?

No?

(animals chittering)

(tiger growls)

(trap clanking)

(tiger growls)

(dramatic music)

(gun fires)

- [Cheena] I can't see her at all, Pundit!

(tiger growls)

- [Pundit] And here, come!

Come get me!

Come here!

This is the blood, come on, come on!

Come get me!

- Jump, Pundit!

(tigers roar)

(tigers growling)

Guard!

(tiger growls)

- Over there!

(tense music)

(guns firing)

Bishop, I repeat, she's coming towards you.

- Come on, Madhu, go, the tigress is attack, come on,

Madhu, come on!

- [Madhu] Turn the boat around.

- Give me the crank, I'll start the engine.

(tense music)

(tigers growl)

Madhu, let's just do it, hurry up!

- [Man] Come on, come closer!

- [Pundit] Get on!

- [Madhu] Quickly, quickly.

- Move! - Come on, Pundit!

(guns firing)

- Sufi.

(tiger roars)

(guns fire) (tense music)

(majestic music)

Madhu, faster, go faster!

- [Sufi] South side!

(guns fire)

- [Hero] That way, that way, come on, that way!

(guns fire)

- [Jhumpa] Please stop, Madhu!

Madhu, stop the engine, we can't go any further.

- Damn it. - Shit.

(Sufi shouts)

- Damn!

- Pundit, the water has started receding already.

If we don't get out of his area now

and reach the main canal quickly,

we'll be stuck here

for the next six hours. - Shut up.

Bloody hell!

- [Madhu] Cheena, this side, this side,

the water's a little bit deeper here.

- Come on!

Pull it towards you.

Come on, Hero, pull!

- [Cheena] Push, Pundit, push!

- [Sufi] Pull, Pundit, push!

(group chattering)

- [Pundit] Sufi, grab the boat around.

Push Hero. - Push harder.

Faster, man.

To the other side.

- Hold it, hold it. - That way.

(chattering) (tiger growls)

- [Pundit] Come on, put your backs into it.

- [Hero] Come on, a little more!

- Just a little bit! - Go, go, go, go!

- Just a little more. - Yeah, it's starting.

Go, go, go, go!

(groaning)

Okay, okay, okay, that's better, that's better.

- [Cheena] That's it, that's it.

- [Pundit] Cheena, that way.

Turn it around!

- Fish, man. - Okay.

Everybody on the boat now.

- Come on. - Wait for me.

(ominous music)

- Pundit, shall I try?

(tiger growls)

(Hero screams)

- Hero! - I'm stuck!

Cheena!

(guns firing)

(dramatic music)

(shouts) Help me!

- Get him up! - Careful, careful, careful.

- Pull him in, pull him in! (Hero screams)

Pull him up, pull him up, pull him up!

- [Hero] My leg, Sufi!

(Hero screams) - Pull!

(Bheera grunts)

Sufi!

Pull him in! (Hero groans)

- [Hero] My leg!

- Take him inside. (Hero groans)

(Bheera grunts)

(Bheera grunts)

- Like hell. (tiger growls)

(Hero moans)

(mysterious music)

(Bheera whistles)

The Sundarbans have the world's largest

salt water crocodiles.

Didn't you know or were you not informed?

(Hero coughs) - Sufi, how's he doing?

- That was the last morphine injection.

It will help reduce the pain

but I think if he's not treated soon.

- The tigress is still wandering around

in this area, Pundit.

Think about it.

You won't find a better opportunity than this to kill her.

- Madhu, can you take the boat through such shallow waters?

- I'll try to do that, sir.

If we can make our way through the smaller canals, you know,

we should be able to reach the main canal.

It may be a bit difficult but I'll definitely

give it a try.

- Okay, go. - Right.

Could you help? - Come on.

- No, no, no, no. - Steady, Madhu.

Be careful.

(Bheera whistles)

- Oh my god.

- What's the matter?

- Look at that.

(speaks in foreign language) Bheera's cut the fuel line.

All the diesel's leaking out!

- Bheera! - Sufi!

- You're blaming me, are you? - Hey, Bheera!

- And not a word from you and I'll cut your tongue

right out of your mouth, get it?

- Let him go.

- [Bheera] Blaming Bheera, idiot.

Now I'm covered in stinking mud.

(Madhu whimpers)

- [Cheena] Pundit, what are we to do now?

- Is there any other way to get out of here?

- Yeah.

Look.

Now we'll have to cross the jungle

and somehow reach the main river.

From there we can get some fisherman's boats on hire.

However let's not forget, we are still

very much in tiger territory.

There's danger lurking in every nook and corner.

- Pundit you are a good leader.

When you thought of turning back, right choice, very good

but this girl will be taking you in wrong direction.

After track, not good (chuckles).

- So what the hell are we waiting for?

Jhumpa, you show us the way. - Yeah.

- Guys, let's go, Sufi. - Brother.

- Can I help you? - Cheena, let's go.

- [Madhu] No, no, no!

- [Pundit] Sufi, be careful.

- [Sufi] Hurry up.

- [Pundit] Keep moving, Cheena.

(somber music)

(suspenseful music)

(Hero groans)

- What is it? - What is it?

- Sufi, water, water.

- Sufi, give him some water.

(Hero groans)

(tiger growls)

(animals screeching)

(ominous music)

Can we find any water here?

- Only salt water.

Only those who are used to salt water can survive

in the Sundarbans, Pundit.

- Pundit, something tells me we don't have much time.

- Okay, let's go, guys. - Which way?

- Move, move.

(tense music)

Sufi, carefully.

- [Hero] Slowly, Sufi.

(grunting)

- This way. - Slowly.

- [Pundit] Come on, come on, leave it.

Quickly.

(ominous music)

Come on.

You're going to be all right, Hero, just hold on.

(Hero groans) Jhumpa, Jhumpa,

we have to stop.

Sufi, be careful, here.

Let him sit here.

Keep it straight, keep your legs straight.

- Gently, gently.

- [Sufi] Hero, relax, Hero, take a breath,

take a breath, breathe, breathe.

- No, Sufi! - Damn it.

Pundit, he's lost a lot of blood.

We have to get him out of here fast.

- [Pundit] Sufi, let him have some water.

- Pundit, let's carry on, let's get out of this jungle, man.

- Hero, Hero, we're really tired too.

Let's get some rest.

- Are you sure? - Yeah.

- You sure, Pundit? - Yeah.

- Hey Hero, don't lose heart, you're going to come

out of this alive.

(animal screeching)

- Jhumpa how much further is it?

- I don't really know this territory too well.

But I'm thinking if we keep moving southwards,

we should be able to find the main river.

- Are you sure about this?

(Sufi breathes heavily)

(Bheera humming)

(tense music)

- Cheena. (Cheena gasps)

- No, brother, killing them would be your biggest mistake.

These are mating snakes.

They gather here only once a year.

During this time, they look for their partner and they mate.

As long as we don't harm them, they will do nothing to us.

(mysterious music)

We should just try and get out of here

without touching or disturbing anything.

(suspenseful electronic music)

- Pundit, this was in Bheera's bag.

- Not now, Sufi. - I'm...

- We've got to get out of here quickly.

Let's go, come on, Hero, Cheena.

(men groan)

Come on.

Let's go.

(Bheera groans)

Hero, mind your leg.

Everybody stay sharp.

- [Bheera] Hey don't forget your bottle.

(intense music) (snakes hissing)

- [Hero] Cheena, easy, man.

(snakes hissing)

(men shout)

- My gosh, my gosh! - Easy, Pundit.

- Madhu! (shouts)

Get the gun, run.

(intense music)

- Let's go this way.

Here, across the stream!

(gun firing)

(men muttering)

(Sufi grunts)

(snakes hissing)

- Sufi, stop!

Sufi! - Sufi!

- Sufi! - Sufi!

- No! - Take your hands off me!

(Sufi groans) (snakes hissing)

- Jhumpa.

Hey.

Why are you standing frozen like a statue?

Hey, what happened wasn't your fault, huh?

I mean you had no idea that this route was wrong.

Say something, you couldn't have known

that Sufi's soul was going to die, huh?

You couldn't have possibly known that or did you?

(Hero groaning)

Pundit, I had warned you.

In this Sundarbans mission, following your heart, not good.

Following your head, very, very good.

- Jhumpa, you better show us the way to get out of here.

Jhumpa, Jhumpa.

Tell us how to get out of here.

Jhumpa!

Jhumpa, Jhumpa, snap out of it!

Tell us how to get out of this place.

- How could...

How could this have happened, I don't understand.

- What?

- It's my...

It's my fault, all of this.

- [Pundit] Why are you talking like this, Jhumpa?

- [Jhumpa] All of it.

- This is not your fault, Jhumpa.

We'll talk about this later.

First, tell us how to get out of this place.

Jhumpa please! - Pundit!

She doesn't know anything about this jungle.

No one knows anything about this jungle, damn it!

- I know.

There is one way we can get out of here alive

and only I know it.

- Pundit, Pundit. (Bheera laughs)

No one else knows more about this jungle than Bheera.

We should listen to him.

- Sir, this Bheera cannot be trusted, sir, really.

Sir, it would be a terrible mistake to trust him, sir.

This man will get us all killed, I swear on my life.

He's more dangerous than a snake, sir.

- You little brat, I warned you, didn't I?

- Bheera.

Enough.

Cheena, how many bullets left in your gun?

- It's empty.

- Pistol?

- This is also empty.

- Hero?

(intense music)

Bheera.

If you play anymore games this time,

you're going to meet up with all 12

of these nine mm bullets.

And that meeting will be over in three and a half seconds.

Let's move.

Madhu.

Come on. (Hero groans)

(mysterious music)

(Hero groans)

- Where's Bheera taking us?

(animal chittering)

(creaking)

(Hero groans)

- Where's Bheera?

- He was right here. - Bheera.

- Bheera!

Bheera!

(Bheera growls) (Madhu and Jhumpa gasp)

- Look, Bheera, you'd better stop playing these games

with us, you hear me?

- [Pundit] Bheera, stop this nonsense

and show us the way out!

- (laughs) Then let's move, you go ahead.

The main river's just up ahead, go on.

(mysterious music)

(intense music)

(mysterious music)

(animals chittering)

- Bheera's gone again. - God.

Bastard ran away.

Sir, there's danger ahead, sir.

- Cheena, keep moving, come on.

(engine humming) - Shh.

That's an engine.

Sir, engine sound, the main canal's right over there.

Quickly, quickly, let's go.

Hurry up, brother, let's go,

there's a boat. - Let's go.

- [Madhu] This way, this way, follow me.

(ominous music)

- Jhumpa.

(tense music)

- What's she looking at?

- Bheera has brought us right into a death trap.

Right now, we are in the tiger's den.

- Brother, I can still hear the troller sound.

The main canal's not very far away,

we can still make it.

- Pundit. - Let's go or we'll all

be dead. - Let's go.

- Okay Pundit. - Hurry, hurry, hurry.

Jhumpa come on. - Let's go.

(tiger growling)

(tense music)

(tiger roars) (group gasps)

(tiger growls)

- Brother! - Madhu!

- [Jhumpa] Don't!

Don't, Madhu! - Pundit!

(tiger roars)

(solemn music)

(Hero screams)

(tiger roars)

(tense music)

- [Man] Cheena, save me!

(Cheena shouts) (tiger roars)

No, no!

(Cheena shouts)

(tiger growls)

(dramatic music)

- Pundit!

(Pundit shouts) (tiger roars)

(weapon pings)

(tiger and Pundit groan)

(somber music)

Pundit, Pundit!

Pundit, get up, get up, are you okay?

Get up!

That's it.

Hero!

Hero.

- Bheera!

(Pundit growls)

You lied to all of us again!

So this is what your plan was all along?

To get us all killed?

- Get off me!

It was you guys who came here to hunt the tigress.

You guys.

And when I wanted to join hands with you,

why didn't you agree with me then?

Why didn't you listen to me?

- Bheera!

- Now listen to me carefully, Pundit.

The only way for all of you to get out of here alive

was is and will be,

you know what?

To actually help me by killing this white tigress.

This, this, this tigress!

- Brother, the troller's leaving and he's...

- Hold this, come on, take this gun

and get it over with.

Now accomplish your mission, take all the photos you want,

go back to your big city and live your life!

- Cheena.

Take them all with you, Madhu, go, lead the way.

- All right.

Jhumpa.

- I won't go.

- I'll meet you at the troller, Madhu, come on.

- Finish it, Pundit, finish it, finish her.

Finish her.

She killed all your friends one by one.

Avenge each one of them, end her life once and for all!

- Faster, faster, brother!

(Cheena shouts)

Run, brother!

(dramatic music)

(tiger roars)

Come on, brother, hurry up!

(men groaning)

- Cheena.

- Hero, Hero!

Don't you dare give up, brother, come on, get up!

- Cheena, Cheena.

You used to talk about leaving me behind in the jungle

to die, remember?

Cheena, my friend, go.

Cheena, go!

(groaning) - Hero!

Hero, Hero!

(Cheena screams)

(dramatic music)

(tiger roars)

(tiger growls)

(Cheena shouts) (tiger roars)

(tense music)

- [Pundit] Come on.

(intense music)

Wait.

- Oh no! - No, Jhumpa, no Jhumpa, wait.

Jhumpa, no, it's no use, wait.

(solemn music)

- Not like this.

(Jhumpa cries)

- You have my word, I will not let you fall prey

to the tigress, okay?

- Not like this.

(gun fires)

(tiger roars)

(both gasp)

(tiger roars)

- Finish her, Pundit, kill this bloody tigress!

Avenge each one of them, finish it, Pundit!

She killed all your friends one by one.

Finish it, Pundit, finish it, finish her.

Finish her, Pundit.

She killed all your friends one by one.

I'm not gonna leave this one either!

- Bheera, what has this little cub ever done to you?

- Who asked you to come to the Sundarbans and interfere?

- Sundarbans is the home of the tiger.

She went to Uday's hut looking for her cub.

- [Jhumpa] Here I am trying to save a mother

and you can't wait to kill her.

Will you be happy after you've achieved your goal?

- [Man] Killing an innocent can never be someone's goal.

- I had this cub perfectly trapped once before

but a photographer freed her and saved her life

and the chance to kill the tigress slipped

from my hands, but now (laughs).

Now her end will be worst than a dog's death.

(cub growls)

All I have to do... (tiger growls)

(dramatic music)

(gun fires)

(tiger roars)

(Bheera whimpers)

(tiger roars)

(Bheera shouts)

- Jhumpa, if you let the cub go, we might lose

the only opportunity we have of getting out of here.

- [Jhumpa] We've tormented this mother and child

for far too long.

(tiger growls)

(tigers roar)

(dramatic music)

(tigers roar)

- [Uday] Sundarbans diaries, day 15.

All Sundarbans tigers are not man eaters.

They, like humans, do whatever they have to keep

their family at home safe.

Animals and birds, along with humans,

have equal right over this Earth.

Isn't it strange?

We discovered fire

and we are the ones who use it to burn each other's homes.

Human beings are blood thirsty monsters.

(chuckles) And we call these poor tigers man-eaters.

- So what happened to that first tiger cub

that was rescued?

(gentle music)

(tigers groan)

(tiger growls)

- So Uncle Cheena, how did you get out of there alive?

- When those two tigers attacked me.

(tigers roar) (Cheena shouts)

(Cheena groans)

You remember I told you about the Galgeti tribe?

Well they covered me in a blanket of leaves.

They squeezed the juices of various leaves

to cover the smell of my blood.

When the tigers couldn't find me, they left

and I survived.

- [Man] After all of this, why are we holding back now?

- The budget's gone haywire, dude.

(phone rings)

Yeah, baby.

No, no, no, I'm not drinking.

Abbis and I were discussing work.

No, no, the kids have eaten.

- No, no, no! - No, no 100% they've eaten.

(kids shouting) Come on, let's go.

I'm coming, I'm coming, darling.

- Calm down, guys. - Come on, kids.

Mama has called, we've got a flight tomorrow

early in the morning.

- No, no. - Come on, Angard.

Angard. - I'm holding onto the chair.

- Angard, come on. - Papa, please,

one more story.

- Uncle Abbis? - Yes.

- I want a tigress too.

- Come on, darling. - Tigress?

Don't worry, when you're married, you will get your tigress.

- Papa, is the story true?

- (laughs) He's probably never even seen a tigress (laughs).

(solemn music)

(Cheena sighs)

(tiger growls)

(intense music)
