- So, I don't think you're gonna

your new barn!

(Cory): Oh, wow.
(Leo): Look at that!

(Randy): I'm Randy Spracklin,
third generation builder,

proud Newfoundlander!

My team and I are building
on one giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it
rock for nothing!

We fight the elements year-round

to get the job done.

It might be tough for some,
but not for us.

Because when this is your view,
it's worth it.

(gulls squawking)

(upbeat music)

(Randy): We're at the end
of the summer,

and one of the big projects
had been renovating

this century-old barn
in Bay Roberts

just outside Brigus.

Neighbours say
a merchant bought the land

and built two homes with barns
on the property

for his daughters.

The homeowners, Cory and Leo,

love the history of this place,
but not how it looks now.

They didn't wanna tear it down,

and we love restoring
old buildings,

so it's a win-win
project for us.

And it'll be a catty space
when we're done with it.

(meowing)

On the main floor is gonna be
an entertaining space

with a large dining table,
lots of seating, a bar area,

and we're installing a vintage
wood stove to keep things warm.

On the second floor is gonna be
a loft space,

perfect for hanging out,
or a place to crash.

We installed a large dormer,
which adds more head room

and really brightens things up.

We've done a lot of work
to get to this point.

We started at the bottom
and replaced the rotten sills.

We put a new concrete floor,
fixed the joists,

and opened up the ceiling
to the second floor.

- The last thing Randy said was,

"Don't try to take the bow out."

But Randy's not here.

(upbeat music)

(Randy): I've gotta give it
to the old man.

He fixed the bow in the roof,
he built the dormer,

and it looks good.

I hate to admit it,
but he was right.

Now we're onto
the finishing work.

So, Nikki, this is what
we're gonna do today.

We're gonna put a handrail
on the top using old sticks.

And you're the one
that's gonna build it!

- Oh, jeez...

- Let's go up and measure it up.

Then we'll go back
to the wood shop.

She's a little bit nervous
about trying new things.

I think her biggest thing
is she don't wanna fail

and don't wanna do it wrong,
but hey,

you might make it way better
than any of us!

Ready to make this handrail?
- I don't know.

You must be pretty busy if
you're puttin' me in the shop.

- Oh, hey, you got this!

Uh, we'll go from
the actual framing,

so you got 10 foot 2 inches.
- Excellent.

- And 10 inches for the 2 by 10.

- Uh, height wise?
- We want a 42-inch rail.

That's from the floor.
- From the finished floor.

- Yeah.

She's definitely liking
the finish work more than

the framing and the other
work that we may do,

so in the shop is finish work.

It's just, she gotta have
a little bit of confidence

in herself, and she'll be able
to take it and run with it.

So, if you got the measurements,
you know what to do.

Ready to go build it.

- Well, you're not gonna leave
me in the shop first, right?

- Yeah, I won't leave
you hanging. But you got this!

- I was gonna say, I got it,
but you better be with me!

- Let's go back to the shop
and start building.

(Randy): We love
reclaiming old wood

and making something
out of it.

It's our way of putting
history back into a project,

and there's a goldmine
at the barn.

So, we're gonna reuse it.

- This is my first attempt
at anything shop work.

To do something,
and see a finished project

that's gonna be shown, to me,
I love that side of it.

Anybody could frame a house.
You never see it,

it's behind walls.

I'm excited about it,
but at the same time,

I'm nervous.

So, this is the wood
Paul dug in?

- Pretty amazing, isn't it?
Taken from the barn.

You're not gonna be able
to go to a big-box store,

buy this.
- Nice.

(Randy): The railings upstairs
gonna be a really cool feature

of the new loft.
The build is straightforward,

but the design one of a kind.

So, you don't want any,
you know, hard edges.

So we'll lightly buff it.

Probably give it a little
bit of clear

to bring out that colour.
- Pop it.

- Then you take another stick.
This is your handrail now.

This is gonna be the post
in that old barn.

(whistling)
- Nice.

- You get the vision?
- Got the vision.

- I remember my first
job in the shop

was to build a mirror.

It didn't fall
off the wall, so I did good.

My old man was there
to help me along,

definitely show me,
you know, the little tricks

about cutting something,
gluing it together,

so I'll be there with Nikki.
Just watch her from afar.

She got this. She just needs
to believe in herself.

- This is Nikki

You're gonna be
one with the wood today.

- Here we go.

Ugh.

Hmm...

So, definitely nervous.
This is my first time

in the shop alone.

No Randy. No Paul.

You can probably sense
the distress in me.

So, I wanna do it right.
So, no pressure.

Argh!

So that hundred-year-old wood,

there's probably a hundred
old nails in it,

and the first cut, what do I do?

Boom. Strike a nail.

Rookie.

So now I gotta kinda watch
for all these old rust spots

and make sure I don't
keep striking nails,

or this nice blade
is not gonna be so nice.

Nikki's workshop experience
is gonna be cut quick

if it keeps like that.
I don't think I'm gonna

tell Randy about this just yet.

(boat horn honking)

(Randy): While Nikki's inside
working on the railing,

it's blowing a gale outside.

The roofer's fighting
the ocean winds

to get the roof torched on
at the barn

back in Bay Roberts.

It gotta be sealed
before we can start finishing

the work inside, so we're
pushing hard to get it done.

Same at my mom's
brand new house in Brigus.

- Ah! Piss pouring rain!

- The old man and I have been
doing a lot of work

on the weekends.

(Scott): Measure twice,
cut once, huh?

- Oops. Cut 'em too short.
(laughing)

And there's still a lot to do
before Mom can move in.

And I'm adding a new job
to our workload.

This one is pretty cool,
and is in the most iconic area

of St John's: Jelly Bean Row.

There's a lot
of colour around here.

(upbeat music)

- Rumour has it, the sailors
painted their house

different colours so they
could see it in the fog

when they're coming
in from the sea.

(upbeat folk music)

Whether it's true or not,

you can't miss this area.

It's not unusual
for homeowners

to bring a lot of colour
inside as well,

just like this new job.

So, I'm here to go over
the final plans

with the homeowner, Krista,
before we start demo.

So, this house I'm figuring
is about 80 to 100 years old.

It's got a lot of history
in the place, the old trim,

the high ceilings, even the old
coal burning fireplace.

Krista been waiting now 10 years
to get this kitchen done,

so now we're here,
we're gonna make it happen.

I love the height
of the ceilings, though.

- Thank you.
- So, how do you use the space?

- Um, right now,
it's not utilized probably

to the best capacity.
But for entertaining

and for cooking, it's probably
not the most ideal.

- Yeah, the layout
is a little bit strange.

We can definitely improve
on that.

- I don't wanna hurt
the kitchen's feelings here,

but I'm not really
its biggest fan.

Especially in Newfoundland,
it would be really nice

to have a kitchen party,
and to make the kitchen

the heart of the house.

- Well, we're definitely
gonna rip it all out,

do a whole new layout.
I see you got two doorways.

- Yeah, I do.

Not really great for heat.
A lot of the heat escapes

and just goes, you know...
- So, we can probably

boarder that one up.
It'll keep the heat in here,

and not losing it all outside.

- Yeah, that sounds good.

- And making more cabinets
will give you more storage,

because I see you got
a dandy little cart there.

- Yeah, I definitely
have a storage problem.

(laughing)

- She knows what she wants,
but she don't know

what she wants, so she's lettin'
us have full range

of this design and the layout.

So, we need a deadly
looking kitchen.

- Yeah.
- Modern looking.

- Yeah.
- A place for entertaining,

and a lot of storage.

- Yeah, can you make
that happen?

- Definitely!
- Okay, awesome.

(Randy): The plan starts
with a new layout

to get more storage,
which means we're closing up

the doorway
to add more cabinets.

We'll build in some
bench seating,

and add more counter space.

We'll move the stove
and install even more cabinets.

It's really gonna hit the mark
with Krista.

We got a budget of $30,000
and three weeks to do it.

I got a whole lot of ideas.

I'm gonna have fun
with this one.

So, what's behind that wall,
do you know?

- I really don't know.

- Hmm.
(knocking)

It sounds hollow.

You know, usually
with these old houses

with all the rooms separated,

usually there's more
than one fireplace.

So, I'm expecting
that's what's behind there.

But, hey, I'm definitely
gonna find out.

- I'm a little nervous,

but I'm kinda glad
that he's gonna do this now,

because then it's gonna
feel real.

Like, after 10 years,
I'm gonna get a new kitchen.

(Randy): The biggest challenge
for us is finding something

behind the walls.
This is an old house,

so I can see electrical
being a big issue,

maybe the plumbing.

You never know.

So, I got the tools.
Ready to make a hole?

- Yeah, this is real now.

- Do you wanna smash it first?
- Yeah, I do actually.

I do wanna smash it.
- Give'er!

(laughing)
- Okay.

Okay! It got this.

Oh, cool!
I know what it is.

(Randy): In St. John's
on Jelly Bean Row,

Krista was a little nervous
about updating her kitchen.

But when the hammer came out...

- Okay.
(laughing)

- Now don't break the chimney.
You wanna keep it intact!

- Oh, cool!

Oh, that's an old chimney.

- It is! It looks good.
Clean that up.

It looks like a million bucks.
- It does. Now I'm excited.

- Yeah?
- After seeing this.

- People only dream of
having something like this

in their house.
- I know! I have it!

And I had no clue it was there!

- Yeah, this is a great feature,
a great find.

So, we're all good.

I'll go get the crew, come back,
start taking it apart.

- Awesome.

(Randy): Back at the shop
in Brigus,

the work is nonstop
for the barn.

My dad's in the groove working
on something really cool.

- So, what we're doing
is prepping

some old windows
for the old barn.

The homeowner down there, they
wanna recycle all their windows.

So, this is windows
that come out of an old house

and it keeps the character,
keeps the history.

Old is the way to go.

There's not any nails
whatsoever.

It looks like it was all
wood pins,

you usually can't see it
after they're done.

Built to last, yes.

Which you can see it did, right?

People had stuff nailed to it
over the last hundred years,

so I took all that off
and cleaned it up,

and got it back to the original.

It's a bit of work.

There's definitely a difference
between me and Randy

here in the shop. Patience.

Randy can last
a few hours in here.

I can last a few days
and not even leave.

Randy's patience is about
right here,

and mine's about right here.
So, uh, that's the reason

why I'm here and he's not.

So, we're gonna put the old
sash into the new frame

and hope that fits.

and a road trip to town.

Me and my wrecking crew
are ready to rip out

Krista's old kitchen,
and get this reno started.

We worked all over Newfoundland
and Labrador,

but definitely
in the St. John's area.

It's only an hour
outside of Brigus,

a beautiful spot.

The next thing is we gotta
bring in the whole crew,

start demo.

- Doing demo in St. John's
is a totally different demo.

You've got no parking,
confined space.

The houses are like,
snugged right together.

Three people
in a little tiny room,

it gets pretty hectic, but hey,

we don't mind the challenge.

- To be honest,
the biggest challenge

I probably won't discover yet,

because it usually comes up
when you least expect it.

- We're hoping this is gonna be
the quickest demo,

but I'm not gonna say anything,
because then it will turn out

to be the longest.

Alright, ready for demo?

We're gonna take everything
down but hey,

we're gonna try to save
a little bit.

(upbeat folk music)

So, all the cabinets,
we're gonna take them down.

I'm gonna bring them
to another place, drop them off

where they can reuse them.

- Nice.

The floor is going,
but it's a mystery.

We don't know what's underneath.
- Duh-nuh!

- Yeah, pretty much.

Save the brick. Save the wood.
Take all the drywall off.

And hopefully,
it's in really good condition.

(Nikki): Oh, nice!

(Randy): Once the demo is done,
the first thing to do

is to close up the doorway.

It'll give me more room
to add more cabinets,

plus I'll build in some
bench seating for Krista.

A long run of counters
will be perfect for prep space,

and I'll move the stove
and put in more cabinets.

This will work so much better
for Krista.

- Spracklin, do you wanna
stand up underneath this one?

(Randy): It's not really
like your normal demo.

To not be able to come in
with a sledgehammer

and beat it all to pieces.

- Ooh.
(Nikki): Timber!

- Every job we do,
if we can save it and reuse it,

that's what we'll do.
Or we'll donate it,

'cause there's always
someone in need of a countertop,

or a kitchen, or anything
that you may have,

so why not save it, pass it
along so they can use it?

The sink'll lift right up.

some challenges

with these old houses
are all joined together.

The best access is through
the front door.

And all the demo material
gotta go out,

and all the new stuff come in.

It's gonna be tricky.

I can't wait to tear that down!

Not the chimbley,
just the drywall.

We're gonna uncover
that full chimbley chase

and see what
it's gonna be like.

You know, the brick
look amazing.

bits and pieces of it.

are almost finished demo

at Krista's.

We're putting in
a new kitchen,

and taking a chance
on what's behind

these hundred-year-old walls.

the corner. That's mint!

Isn't that a beautiful feature?
The chimbleys all in good shape.

So, we'll build the cabinets
around it, incorporate it.

It'll look like a million bucks!

Back at the barn in Bay Roberts,

Al's patching up
one of the original walls

by reusing some
of the old clapboard.

It's a great feature to keep.

And the barn
is coming along good.

We got the roof all
fixed up, the old floor is out,

concrete floor is poured.
We even got the new dormer in.

Now we're ready for paint.

Sam and Sasha's here today

because we need a paint
colour picked out,

and also we need
furniture layout.

So, what do you think
of the barn?

- Oh, this is great!

- Oh, it looks awesome.

We met with the homeowners.
I think we have a good sense

of their style.

(Sasha): Yeah, we need
to keep that.

All that texture. All that paint
colours in it.

It looks so cool.
It's such a feature wall.

- So that's a keeper.

- Most inspiring for me
is definitely

the old, reclaimed wall.
It's really beautiful.

It shows the age of the space.

- They're all about, you know,
entertaining, parties,

a hint why we're gonna probably
put a big table...

- Okay. Love that.
- ...in the centre.

(Sam): Kind of have
the wash tub there.

The bar area there.

And then have that in line
with the table.

Maye ground the table
on a nice rug,

kind of warm up the space.

- So, my painters are ready
to go tomorrow,

but we need some kind of
direction on what colours.

- Yeah, Sam and I were thinking
for in here,

we wanna have a nice, soft feel,

something light.

And then we can do some cool
colours on the windows,

popping them out a little bit.
- I love that.

Do a nice accent.

is now gonna be a two-storey,
two-level space.

it to like, a little mini house.

They're really maximizing
the space in a great way.

- So, I know it was really
important for the homeowners

that this space be a place
for guests to stay.

- So, we could do a really
nice day bed here.

- Love that.
- Make it super warm and cozy

for them to have
a little getaway.

- Yeah.

Do we need to build
anything up here?

- I was wondering if we could do
maybe a bookcase,

maybe on this long
wall over here,

we could bring it
all the way up.

Just like a feature that you
can't usually get to do.

The texture in the books,
that would just add great decor.

- I love that. Something maybe
you could build?

(Randy): So, floor to ceiling
bookshelves?

Yeah, that sounds
pretty awesome.

- You can do it?

It's gonna be an awesome space!

(Randy): With the colour
choices made,

we can begin to paint.

We're not gonna
put a ton of coats

on these old walls
because we want the old texture

to show through.

It's another way to keep
the character of the place.

Back in my shop in Brigus,

Nikki's picking up where
she left off

with her railing project
for the barn.

- Oh, jeez.

Mint! Look! Look at that!

I didn't mess it up!

The rookie is getting
this figured out!

So, day two. Now the posts
are all matched out

and ready to go.
So now we're gonna put

a handrail coming across here.
It's looking like

we're gonna put a border here,
it's almost like a...

a chicken coop wire.
And then below here,

we're gonna put a couple logs,

and then that'll be
the finished product!

I'm gonna build it in the shop
to get the full visual effect

of what it's gonna look like,
then disassemble it,

take it down,
and put it in place.

That way, if we got any tweaking
and stuff,

we're gonna do it here
in the shop.

with the impact driver.

Oh yeah,
when you got it in reverse...

So, this is the log we're gonna
use for our handrail.

I need to take the chisel
and chisel a little bit around

on the flat surfaces
of the post.

So, I got about an inch
worth of chiselling

inside here to get it to almost
sink into the wood a little bit.

Hopefully, the boss approves.
(chuckling)

But hey, no boss here today.
Only me. Heh-heh!

Uh-oh...

Looks like we got a nail.

My log count is gettin' low.
If I mess this up,

there's no other one.
So, I'm gonna take my time

and make sure
I don't mess it up.

It's this one. So, we're cuttin'
from here down.

So, Scott came back and gave me
a hand to put these in place.

It's a two-person job.

(Scott chuckling)
- Jeez... Don't say that.

That's the only we got.

to have it fully finished.

(Randy): Nikki's taking on
her first big project

in the shop, building a handrail
for the barn's loft.

She's making it out of
a hundred-year-old logs,

so its measure ten times,
cut once.

- But mine's not fitting...

- What?
- Did we (bleep) the length?

This project is pretty much
on my shoulders.

So needless to say,
it'll be a pretty good,

razzing now
if this don't work out.

Oh, so you'll come on
a slight angle, like...

Ah, okay.

Buddy, look.

- Showing dead on on that!

To me it's looking mint!
Beautiful!

We got pretty much
most of it assembled now.

A final few tweaks
and we're good to go.

(Randy): Back in Bay Roberts,

we're at the final stage
of construction at the barn.

Paul's on site
to get it all done.

(Paul): It should be a busy day,
but it should be productive.

Hopefully soon, we can get close
to wrapping this one up.

We're gonna be building
the bookcase,

installing the ship ladder,
and the wood stove

to try and get a little
bit of heat going,

so the wood stove
will probably go first.

The wood stove is solid
cast iron,

so it means it's heavy.
(laughing)

(Paul): Our reinforcements
have arrived.

We got Scott, Nikki, Cody,
and myself this morning.

It'd be a struggle for just two.

Once we got that done,

we'll be able to light
our break-in fire

and get some real heat
on the go.

Gone too far now.

Twist her a little
more that way.

Yup.

Line it up. That's not bad.

(Al): Nothing to it!

(Paul): So, it's just
hook up the funnels,

and we're good to light
the fire.

You need the nice, peaceful
cracking of the wood fire.

We're gonna move over,
and we're gonna

try and knock out this bookcase.

We got three verticals,
and it's just gonna be

a horizontal shelf's
going in between.

It's 10 to 12 inches apart.

And it'll continue
all the way to the ceiling.

We gotta try and build
a quality bookshelf

that's level and sort of square

to hold the books so that
they don't fall down,

but we gotta work
with the existing character

of the barn,
'cause with the old barn,

it's a little tipped
this way, that way,

and nothing's perfect,
and blend it all together

to make it look like
it belongs there.

They had a lot of debate
here with the stairs,

like, what belongs in the space.

Some people said
it should be a spiral,

and some people wanted
to build a set of stairs,

but the last idea that come up
with is ship ladder.

A lot like your traditional
staircase,

except the treads
aren't as wide,

and the rise is a lot steeper

than what a normal set of stairs
would be.

It'd give you more
of a feeling of a ladder.

It's a lot more compact.
It takes up less space.

And I know a lot
of the houses around here

were fishing households,
and you know,

it's a great tie to the area,

and gives it a little bit
of character

to go along with the barn.

(Randy): We're heading to town
to make sure

Krista's kitchen reno
stays on track.

Today, we're here.
The demo's all done.

I got Stephen here today.
We gotta bring electricians in

to get it all wired so we can
start puttin' it back together.

The kitchen will be
so much better for Krista.

It'll have more storage,
more counter space,

and a new layout,
which means the electrical

has to be redone and up to code

for the new appliances.

We're going
with the stove over here.

- Yup.
- We're gonna add two new lights

on the side of the fireplace.
- Okay.

- And two new lights
on this wall.

- There's always concerns
when you're dealing

with an old house.

The wiring looks good,
but you never know,

because we are adding lights,
and we are adding plugs.

Adding stuff might
end up being a problem.

- Is there access down below
in order to get new circuits in?

- Uh, I'll apologize now.

There's not much access.

There's a crawlspace,
and actually dirt out to here.

- Okay.

- So, getting into this wall...
- Very tight?

- I hope you got a smaller guy,
you're pretty small.

- There you go.
I'll see what I can do.

You wanna try to get
in and out as quick as possible

down here, for sure.

(Randy): Ahh! Mice!

I'm in the crawlspace,
and like all these older homes,

they're build on the ground.

- I can probably get
to this side, maybe.

- The problem is trying
to actually get wires

from one side of the basement
to the kitchen side.

And where the kitchen is,
it's all filled in.

And that's the biggest problem,
trying to get new wires

up there, 'cause we gotta
rewire everything.

- I think it's gonna be
tricky to do this

without ripping up the flooring

to get the wires in, Randy.

- There'll definitely be
a lot of fishin'.

You know, when we refer
to "fishing"

we're actually taking
like, metal rods,

stick it down the hole,
and get it to an area

where you can hook on a wire
and then haul it back.

And usually we refer
to a "chase."

So, a chase is kind of
like a hole

that you can get
something through.

- Yeah, we can't reach
from this wall back.

It's up against dirt.

- So, how did they get
this one down there?

I was trying not to take up
this floor.

With every piece, the budget
goes down the drain.

It's only day two,

and I can't blow the budget
on this electrical.

So, no extra cost
for fishin' the wires.

But this house is over
a hundred years old.

It's had some upgrades
to the electrical.

I just hope it's enough
for this reno.

Yeah, the panel is right...

- Okay.

(curious music)

- I looked at the panel, and...

it looks like it's gonna
need probably a little bit

in upgrades.
I know we're adding lights,

but sometimes you can break
them down from the big breakers

to small breakers
to give us some room.

But hey, that's why I got
the professionals here.

They'll be able to tell me
if we can keep it.

I hope so,
because we're all about budget.

- So, Randy, it looks
like you have

a loaded-up panel already.

So, I don't think you're gonna
have room to do

what you want to do with it.

Sorry to be the bearer
of bad news.

- Yeah, the panel is right...
that little door.

- Okay.
(curious music)

(Randy): In St John's,
we're installing a new kitchen

in a hundred-plus-year-old house
on Jelly Bean Row.

The electrical panel
has been upgraded, but...

- So, Randy, it looks like
you have

a loaded-up panel already.

So, I don't think you're gonna
have room to do

what you want to do with it.

I would suggest putting in
a new panel.

Probably put one that's more
expandable so that in the future

they can add in more stuff,
and then also we can

take care of the upgrades
that we're looking

to do here now. Sorry to be
the bearer of bad news.

- So, what did that do
for our budget?

- Uh, budget-wise, I mean,
it's gonna put a cost

onto it obviously,
but I think at this point,

I think that's your only option.

- We definitely need
to expand the panel.

We're adding new lights,
appliances.

It's gonna cost us two grand
to upgrade the electrical,

but necessary for Krista.

(loud continuous drilling)

- What noise?
(laughing)

I don't hear any noises.

You block it out, right?

So, I had some camping gear,

so I just brought that
up from downstairs.

It's a kitchen.
(laughing)

This is a luxury.

It's a luxurious time for me.

I mean, I have a toaster oven,
a crock pot, a microwave,

and really, like, you know,
anyone can survive on toast.

It's delicious.
Carbs rule, you know?

(laughing)

I'm really looking forward
to this ending.

Um...but the journey.

isn't it? Not the destination.

(Randy): We're in
the final stretch

of construction at the barn
in Bay Roberts.

My mom is on site
painting the shelves.

Al's working on the bar area.

And it's the moment of truth
for Nikki.

- So, today's assembly day!
Let's hope it all fits.

But hey, you're working
with a hundred-year-old barn,

two-hundred-year-old barn.
Nothing's plumb or level.

(Randy): The top floor
of the barn has gone

from a cluttered mess
to an open loft space

with so much potential.

Nikki's handrail will
be perfect for function,

and it's one of a kind.

- Now, put this jigsaw
puzzle back together.

I'm fine that Paul and Randy's
not here,

as long as everything
goes smooth.

I don't wanna have them
come save the day.

(upbeat music)

(record scratch)
Argh!

Rookie right away! No washer!

Stressed out thinking I'm gonna
mess something up

here by myself.

Missing steps right away!

I can hear Paul now,

"Nikki! You're not thinking!
You're doing it wrong!

Slow down! Try to figure
it out first! Rookie!"

I don't need anybody yelling
"Rookie" in my ear today.

Argh! Al, you wanna
come up for a second, then?

- Sure.
- Is that lining in

on that line too?

I've always looked up to Al.
Al, I've known Al for years

before I even started
with this company.

He's silent.
He's not a big chatterer.

When he do, he's pretty funny.

He's definitely a good soul.

(cracking)
Uh-oh.

I'm sweatin'.

- Nikki? Nikki's a wildcat.

Uh, she's loud.

- You okay?

- She likes to talk a lot.

And she usually comes up
with something...

you don't know
what she's gonna do.

- Where's our line?

Most important thing is making
sure these lines lines up

with the lines that's there.

Is she rock solid?
- Yes.

- Rock solid! Whew!

So, we got a handrail!
It looks good.

And we didn't need Randy
and Paul! Nikki got this.

- Hey, she needed
mother though instead!

(laughing)

- It's girls' day
down at the barn!

We're gonna get some
chicken wire figured out,

and get it all nailed in.

Then we're gonna put our finish
half-moon border across.

And we're gonna call her good.
Catty.

So, end of the day,
just finished up the rail,

and in my opinion,
it looks fantastic.

The big beefy logs blends really
good with the colour tone.

It turned out wicked.
And hey, for my first time

in the shop doing anything,
I'm gonna get a bit of credit

for this one for sure.

(Randy): In Bay Roberts,

Cory and Leo wanted to save
their old barn

with a budget of $60,000.

And the transformation
is complete.

- So, this was a really fun
space to put together.

I feel like, what's the point
of having a barn

if you can't do
something fun with it now?

- Yeah, if you're not utilizing
it for barn animals,

turn it into something
that you can

utilize it for, right?

So, you can be loud with colour.

You can be adventurous
with styling,

because it's not your house,

it's a separate dwelling

you can have a lot of fun with.

- The homeowners have
some great pieces themselves,

But Randy found some really
cool things

actually under the floor
in this space.

- Yeah, when he tore up
the floor, he found like,

a really old glass beer bottle.

He found an old tray,
some really cool pieces

that we were able to incorporate
then into our styling.

So not only did we use pieces
from the homeowners' travels,

their antiques that
they collected, but also pieces

that actually came
from the barn itself.

- I've never felt so inspired
in a space,

and want to have this myself.

Like, I need to get a barn.

The idea of having
somewhere you can kind of

have your friends over
for dinner,

a nice little getaway.

Maybe you need somewhere
for storage. Tough kitten.

Go get another storage
in the back. Who cares?

This is more important.

- I think Cory and Leo
are gonna be excited.

We did hit all the points
that they wanted,

but I'm a little bit nervous

just because we did a few
different little things

to make it better, but only
a little bit nervous,

because they're gonna love it.
It's an awesome space.

Let's go see your new barn!

- I love it. Wow!
It's so much more open.

- Completely different.
- There's so much more light.

- It's very cozy.
- Wow. I love it.

It's more than I expected.

- So, if you can remember
when we first started,

how it all came about.

It was to the point where
if you didn't do anything now

it probably wouldn't last
another year,

especially with the roof
so in bad shape,

-the floor in bad shape.
- Yeah, I know.

We didn't have
much time left on it.

- No. No. So, it was great
that we came in,

salvaged everything,

poured a whole new
concrete floor.

And we even built you
a harvest table.

- Is this table
from reclaimed wood?

(Randy): We're all about
whatever we take out of a place,

we reuse as much as we can.

- Yeah.
- And build something beautiful

like the table, your bar.
(Cory): We have a bar?

(Leo): Wow, yes.

- So that bar, you know,
how we had a big pile

of lumber outside?
Instead of throwing it away,

took some pieces and,
because you love entertaining,

built you a lovely bar.

So, we got a little bit
of storage,

a place to put your ice.

But it's all from this barn.

- This is really neat.
It's very cool.

I love all the exposed
woodworks.

We talked about
insulating the place,

but you'd also lose
some of those details.

- You will. It's all about
the fine detail.

(Cory): Yeah.

(folk music)

It's very Newfoundland.
- It is.

- Right? And the design of this
barn is very Newfoundland,

and that's one of the reasons
I wanted to save it,

because it's a style
that, you know,

people aren't making
them anymore.

So many people told me
I should tear it down.

(laughing)
And I said, "No way!"

I said, "If I teared it down

and built a new one,
I wouldn't have anything

nearly as special as this."

It reminds me a lot
of my grandfather's barn.

- Oh, okay, nice.
- But like, a lot nicer.

(laughing)

We were looking to restore
our barn,

but I think what
we ended up with

was a whole extra house.

(speaking Spanish)

- Oh, he wants to invite all
his family from Cuba to come.

(laughing)
- There you go!

Well, you got a big enough table
that we built,

and a place for them
to crash upstairs.

- Oh yeah,
if we can get 'em here,

we got the space now.
- Yeah!

- Making this loft just makes
it feel so much bigger.

- Oh, it do.
- 'Cause it's open

when you come in,
and then you've got the light

from the new windows
on the back.

It just brightens
it all up completely.

- Why don't we go
have a look upstairs?

- Alright!

(upbeat music)

- Wow...
- Wow!

- Look at that!
- I love it.

- I think we're gonna
stay out here now.

(Leo): I tell you!

- Wow.
- Oh, so nice.

- This is so cozy.
I'm moving my office out here.

- It's a great place
for your office.

- Yeah. I can take a nap.
I've got lots of natural light.

- The use of this space
is amazing here now.

You know, we made it a place
where someone could come over,

you know, stay for the night.

If you remember this roof,
it was in really bad shape.

Making this dormer bigger,
we figured

you gotta keep with the look.

Years ago,
they used the old lumber,

so we went to an old sawmill,
and they cut some lumber for us.

If you look at it, you'd never
say it was brand new.

- Yeah, it feels like
it was always here.

- It gives you
a lot more headroom.

- Yeah.

- And this railing was actually
all the collar ties

in the roof pieces.
We got Nikki,

she's kinda a newbie at it,
but put her to the test

actually putting all this
rail together.

And she did an awesome
job at it.

- It's gorgeous. Yeah.

- Who's gonna be the first guest

to actually try out this space?
- This is gonna be for Ollie.

I'm sure. Ollie is gonna
be out here.

- Oh, okay!
- Yeah.

(Cory): He's been trying to get
out here all along, right?

Every time you open that door,
he's trying to get back in here.

- He was helpin' us out.
You know, he was a big part

of digging up the floor,
you know, testing out the stairs

when we did it,
trying out the ladder.

- He kept a good, close eye.

- Yeah.

- It's a nice, big, open space.
Like,

we got more
than we were looking for.

It's so well set up
for entertaining.

And we've got
a few people coming.

Friends, family
coming to see it.

And we've got the bar
all set for them.

(Cory): Come on in!
- Holy moly!

It feels so much bigger.

(Cory): They made the table...

The bar is all wood from here.

- Woo-hoo! Man, we look good!

- It come together great.
A lot of hard work.

A lot of sweat.
A lot of pride.

And this is what comes out.

(gentle folk music playing)

(indistinct chattering,
laughing)

- This barn
is a hundred years old,

and Cory and Leo seen
the vision, but we seen it too.

With a little bit of creativity,
we can make anything happen.

And that's what we're about,
making dreams happen.

Now I gotta go make the team
a drink, especially Nikki,

because she did an awesome job
on that railing.

So, I better go
before she bawls.
