[dramatic music]
- [echoes] In the name, in the name of all diabolical,
all forces of evil, forces of evil
and darkness and darkness,
to do my bidding, to do my bidding.
I call forces of change, forces of change
to take over my body.
I call, I call the forces of evil,
the forces of evil to permeate my soul.
Through the forces of evil I shall gain my salvation.
Come forth oh great spirit and enter...

[footsteps echo]
- Father Dubois, Father Dubois!
[knocks on door]
Father Dubois!
- What is it, my son?
- There's something wrong with Brother Timothy.
- Was he translating the great book
bound in human flesh?
- Yes, he was- [screams] [werewolf growls]
[bones crunch] [gentle music]
[wind whooshes]
[indistinct speech]
[werewolf growls]
- Stop, spawn of Satan!
[blood spurts]

[voice over] The diabolical must never be allowed...
Never to...
And the curse come to pass.
The silver dagger can destroy the demon
by piercing the heart, and then severing the head.
Who shall ever read this,
I beg you, guard it with your life.
[paper rustles] [gentle music]
[spoken] There, it's done.
- Is it?
It wants you too, Father Dubois.

Just a bad dream.
Okay, okay.

- Good morning, class.
[upbeat music]
Welcome back to Horror and Literature, section 67.
We'll continue our discussion on urban legends.
Um, where was I before?
- You said you had something very special to show us.
- Ah, yes, Nikki, thank you.
Let me begin with a recent discovery.
Some of our esteemed colleagues have uncovered a sarcophagus
right here on this campus, in the old monastery.
Hundreds of years old, purported to be cursed,
ties right in with our class.
What a find!
It's supposed to contain the body of a monk
who dabbled in the black arts,
and put a curse on himself and anyone else who touches it,
turning them into a vicious,
vicious animal, a wolf like creature.
Exciting stuff.
And that brings us to today's subject.
[paper rustles]
What's contained in this envelope
is just as cursed and just as deadly.
- What is it?
- An outdated publisher's clearing house winner.
- No, no, no, no, no.
It's a cursed VHS tape.
Cursed.
Cursed, I tell you.
- It's probably from his porn collection.
- Quiet.
- This is the cursed tape of 1986.
It's said that anyone who watches it
will die a horrible death.
It keeps getting passed around and cannot be destroyed.
- What's on it?
- A cult sacrifice.
- How do you know?
- I watched it, of course.
- But you're still alive.
I thought you said you died if you watch it.
- Yes, yes, I will die someday,
but who knows when?
We're all gonna die.
- [scoffs] What a cop out.
- Do you dare watch it?
- Sure.
- Yeah, yeah, let's do it.
- Yeah.
- You have been warned.
[paper rustles]
Here we go.
[tape rattles] [upbeat music]
[music fades]
[static hisses]
[chalk scrapes]
- [clears throat] Attention students.
Let me have your attention.
This is Professor Timothy Barnes.
He will be helping us to catalog
and oversee the cataloging of the items we found
in St. Augustus Monastery.
These are your graduate assistants,
Jerome Dunn and Melody Hops.
- How do you do?
Has there been any significant finds yet?
- Not yet, but we're just beginning.
- As we understand it,
this is a monastery in which a werewolf or demon,
or some minion of Hell
was supposed to have killed off all the monks
one night back in 1313. [chalk scrapes]
- [Dr. Barnes] Yes it was.
Do you know that I had an ancestor that was a member
of the order when the massacre occurred?
- Really?
Wow, that's great.
- Then you're of European descent?
- [Dr. Barnes] Central European to be exact.
[eerie music]
- Well, I see you're all getting along just fine.
I'll leave you to your excavation.
- Well, tell me more about this legend
about the werewolf.
'Cause I really love monsters and legends
and things like that.
- Well, according to everything that I have seen
and heard, you know, the church records
and documents of the period,
these monks were translating books from the library
of the Pope of Rome.
They were using manuscripts and documents
from the ancient Middle East,
and from the library in Alexandria,
when they found a very odd book.
It was very big, very odd looking.
It was bound in human flesh,
and written in human blood.
[eerie music]
- Right, a book bound in human flesh
and written in blood, huh?
- I'd sure love to get my hands on that.
- Well, you can't,
because the book was lost the night of the massacre
and hasn't been seen since.
It's been mentioned in writings of the time and documents,
but nobody has ever found it,
and there's been a lot of people looking for it.
- Wouldn't it be great if we found it?
- Well, it would be an important find,
but the book is supposed to be able
to turn people into beasts and conjure demons
and all kinds of things.
- Surely you don't believe in that kind of stuff, do you?
- I'm not sure what I believe.
Some things are better left untouched.
Say, it's getting kinda late.
Why don't we call it a night
and I'll see you all first thing tomorrow afternoon?
- Sure, that sounds great. - Yeah.
[static hisses] [eerie music]
[paper rustles]
- It's about time you got here!
- Hey, sorry, I had classes, gimme a break.
Hey, did you have lunch yet?
- No, not yet.
I've been cataloging Father Dubois' crap.
- Well, let's go get some lunch.
Then I'm going to turn to that big tarp over there.
- You better get permission from Dr. Barnes first.
- I've already got permission, thank you.
Do you want to eat or do you wanna bust my chops?
Come on.
- All right, already, let's go
[plastic rustles]
- Look, it's a coffin.
Do you suppose there's any remains in it?
- [Dr. Barnes] There's only one way to find out.
Let's open it up.
[plastic rustles]
- Oh wow.
This is the first time I've ever been involved
in anything like this.
This is great.
- Think we ought to call Melody?
- No way, it was her choice not to work tonight.
Let her live with it.
- Well, let's get started.
- Oh boy.
See, this is what I've always wanted
to become, an archeologist
for in the first place, to rob graves, legally.
- That's a unique view of our work,
isn't it Mr. Dunn?
[tool scrapes] [Jerome coughs]
- [Jerome] Oh Lord, what a stench.
That smells awful.
- Welcome to the wonderful world of grave robbing Mr. Dunn.
[ominous music]
Hmm.
- What is it?
- Well, according to the legends,
Father Dubois, the leader of the Order of Monks,
was killed by one of the,
one of the brethren that was slain by the wolf.
He was murdered by having his heart ripped out of his chest.
- Hm. [suspenseful music]
Do you suppose these are Father Dubois' remains?
- It's entirely possible.
- What do you suppose is in the box?
- I have no idea.
Probably some of his personal possessions, things like that.
[suspenseful music]
[gloves scrape]
[suspenseful music]
[suspenseful music continues]
I think the first thing we ought to do is get this robe off.
Okay, you got to be very, very careful with this
so you don't damage the, the corpse.
There we go.
Okay.
All right, move some of this over.
All right, okay, rip that.
Get that out of there.
Okay.
Okay.
All right, we'll save the robe for Melody.
She can analyze it later.
- [Jerome] Okay. - [Dr. Barnes] All right.
- Do you think he was ever embalmed?
- I don't think so from the condition of the corpse,
it looks like he was just thrown in the box as is.
That seemed to be the fashion
of the religious orders of the day.
Matter of fact, embalming in the Egyptian sense
went out with the Christian era, which...
- Let me get some notes.
- [Dr. Barnes] Okay.
I want you to take notes on our hypothesis,
our procedure, and our conclusion.
And... - [Jerome] Okay.
- Make sure that you get the notes for,
for Dean Rivers in the morning.
- Okay.
- I'm going to have to write up my report.
- All right.
- You ever been in on an autopsy?
- [Jerome] No, never.
- You're just about to.
Have we got any surgical instruments around?
- Yeah, I think Melody has some, hold on.
- Okay.
[suspenseful music] [tools rattle]
- There they go.
- Okay, let's start with a scalpel
and see where we go from there.
Okay?
- [Jerome] Sure.
- Get some, some tweezers.
Could use some forceps, too.
All right, [instrument tray rattles]
I'm going to take some tissue samples on this.
Give me a Petri dish or something to keep them in.
- [Jerome] All right.
How's a beaker?
- [Dr. Barnes] A beaker will do fine.
I don't know if this is going to fit.
That'll do.
Those will be for the pathology students
to analyze in the morning.
- [Jerome] All right, that's great.
- [Dr. Barnes] What else we got in here?
- [Jerome] Dr. Barnes?
Do you think this is really Father Dubois?
- I don't know, but from the looks of the chest cavity,
I would say yes it was.
All the rest of the internal organs are intact.
- What's that?
- Looks like it's his heart.
So I would say that definitely, this is Father Dubois.
[suspenseful music]
[suspenseful music continues]
[pen scrapes] [suspenseful music]
- [Jerome] Well, that's all done.
Now what?
- Why don't you go home and get some sleep?
It's one o'clock in the morning.
- What time did you say it was?
- [Dr. Barnes] One o'clock?
- Shit, I forgot to meet Melody at 9:30 at the movies.
Um, I'll come in early tomorrow
and we'll tear into that little casket, bye.
- Bye, Jerome.
[lighter clicks]
[suspenseful music]
[crickets chirp]
[upbeat music]
[indistinct lyrics]
โช I couldn't fight it any more
[indistinct lyrics]
โช I don't care if it was meant with love โช
โช But you know you ain't my doctor โช
โช So who are you to lecture me like that โช
โช I know just how it ends and yet โช
โช It's the start that [indistinct] โช
- Well, well, Jerome.
- [Lurker] Hey, you know this guy?
[indistinct speech]
- [Jerome] Leave me alone, Tommy.
[indistinct speech]
- Here, let me see those.
- Here you go.
- What do you got here, Jerome?
Oh, it's, I don't know what this is.
- Give it here!
[indistinct speech] [feet scuff]
[Jerome groans]
[all scuffle]
[indistinct lyrics]
- See ya!
[indistinct lyrics]
โช Tell me in the name of what love โช
- Smells like tuna, tastes like chicken.
- [Together] Hold your nose and keep on lickin'!
[all laugh]
- Ooh, baby, do it to me, please.
- My God, I ain't ever seen suction like that before.
- I can't believe she ate the whole thing.
[all laugh]
I'm so horny I could die.
- Come on man.
Let's go get some pussy.
- [Brad] Not me, man.
I want to keep my scholarship.
- Oh, come on Brad, don't be a fag.
- Fuck you, Hives.
- Not in your wettest dream bub.
- Hey guys, we're outta beer.
You need to go get some more.
- Beer I'll go for.
- Hey Melody, sorry I'm late.
I overslept. [dramatic music]
- Don't you have an alarm clock?
- Ha ha, very funny.
Where's Dr. Barnes?
- He left a note on your work table.
- Mm, okay.
- This has gotta be the greatest find
this university has ever been a part of.
- I told you it was great last night.
- Yeah, you were right.
- Dear Jeromes, have to go away today.
Open the box.
Oh wow.
[box clatters]
Sorry.
Melody.
Melody, it's the book!
It's the book.
- I'll be damned.
- Look at that.
Human flesh.
It's gotta be a thousand years old.
- Well, come on, open it.
- I can't, the pages are stuck together.
[book clatters] [suspenseful music]
It's the only page we can see.
Is this Latin?
- [Melody] It looks that way.
Can you speak Latin?
- Not fluently.
Looks like some kind of curse.
I think this is the curse that started the Monk Massacre.
- [Dr. Barnes] Sorry, I'm late.
What was in the box, Jerome?
- Look, it's the book.
It's the book.
- This is amazing.
Can you make out any of the writing?
- I can.
Most of the pages are stuck together.
I can read this one though.
- This is the most significant find of my career.
You found The Book of the Screaming Dead.
I want you to translate this.
What is it written in, Latin?
- Yes, sir.
- Okay, I've got a phrase book in my, in my office.
- That's okay, I got one right here.
- All right.
Okay, you can take this and translate it tonight.
- Okay.
- Okay.
What else was in the book, in the box?
- We didn't look.
- Then look.
[crate rattles]
All right. [suspenseful music]
Okay, Jerome, I want you to translate this scroll.
Melody, you take that dagger
and clean it up tonight, all right?
- Yeah. - Okay, that's great.
- Okay.
It's getting kinda late.
Why don't we call it a night and we'll get back together
and finish this three o'clock tomorrow afternoon, all right?
- Yes. - Sounds good.
- Okay.
[crate rattles]
Bye, Jerome.
Okay. [claps hands]
[crate rattles]
[wind whooshes] [Dr. Barnes yelps]
[dramatic music]
- Okay, let's see.
In the name of the diabolical,
I call forth the forces of darkness to take my bidding,
to do my bidding,
I call forth the forces of change to overtake my body.
I call forth the forces of evil to permeate my soul.
Through the forces of evil,
I shall gain my salvation.
Come forth, oh great spirit of the eternal and enter me.
[wind whooshes]
Oops, I think I just cursed myself.
God, this is turning into a lousy night.
Melody.
Melody will know what to do.
[dramatic music] [paper rustles]
- Anyway, so we're sitting around the house
and she says to me,
"What sort of responsible parent are you?"
[friend laughs]
So I says to her, "Fuck you."
- Oh man.
[upbeat music] [indistinct lyrics]
[faint howl]
- What was that?
- [Student] Hey, bark at the moon, baby.
[werewolf growls]
โช You know you're not my doctor โช
[werewolf growls]
[indistinct lyrics]
[werewolf growls]
[indistinct lyrics]
[werewolf growls]
[siren wails]
[indistinct speech]
[siren wails]
- Hello, Jerome, [suspenseful music]
I didn't expect anybody in today.
- Why?
- Haven't you heard?
- Heard what?
- Two students were killed last night.
One is a murder and the other one was a suspected suicide.
- [Jerome] What?
- One was a girl,
I believe her name was Cindy Pickles
and the other was a football player
named Alvin Hobbs or some such.
- That's too bad.
Oh, finished translating the book.
- What, no remorse for your slain fellow students?
- No, I didn't know the girl,
but Calvin made my life a living Hell.
So, no.
- [Dr. Barnes] Okay, let's see
what this translation has to say.
- [Jerome] God, I hope this works.
I don't know what happened to me yesterday,
but I think it has something to do
with this book and that curse.
[wind whooshes]
It worked!
[dramatic music]
- [Dr. Barnes] What are you doing, Jerome?
- Look, I've been able to separate some more of these pages.
I'm gonna start translating right away.
- Well, that's good.
[paper rustles] [dramatic music]
- Dr. Barnes.
- Hmm?
- Can I tell you something?
- What?
- It's about those murders last night.
I think I killed those people.
- Jerome, are you feeling all right?
- Yes.
It's, it's this book.
I read my translations out loud.
I think I curse myself.
- Jerome, you know as well as I do
that that curse was a lot of nonsense.
- Nonsense?
But I thought you believed in the book.
I thought the curse was real.
- I was kidding.
Now look, you've been under a lot of pressure.
Why don't you just go home and get some sleep,
and we'll continue this later.
All right?
- Maybe you're right.
- Of course, I'm right.
[paper rustles] [dramatic music]
- Good night.
- Good night.
[urgent music]
- Professor Barnes, thank goodness.
I've been trying to reach you all day.
- Melody, I didn't expect anybody in today.
- [Melody] Do you have any idea what's going on with Jerome?
- Jerome?
No, but I do know that three more people
were murdered last night.
One was the coach and the other two
were Randy Westbrook and a Sherry Jennings.
- Oh my God.
What's happening to us?
The city police just came and hauled Jerome away.
- [Dr. Barnes] What?
Well, we better get down there.
Do you have a car?
- No.
- Okay, we'll take mine, let's go.
- Well, class?
- It was disgusting.
Just disgusting.
- It's gotta be fake.
You can see the victim's face.
No one with half a brain would show their face
during a snuff film.
- Not a snuff tape, a cursed tape.
There's a difference.
- Yeah, it's cursed me from never renting another movie
from the rental store downtown.
- Okay, that's enough for today.
What I want you to do before we meet for our next class
is write an essay on what we just saw.
Good day.
[eerie music]
- I feel ill.
- You gonna be okay?
[Nikki groans]
- It's made up.
It's a snippet from one of those shot on video movies
you get down at the movie store.
You know, the ones with the great box art,
but you open it and it looks like
a man shot it on a camcorder.
- I don't know, that decapitation looked real.
- Special effects.
- Fooled me.
- I'll tell you though, if it is real,
it'd be worth a small fortune on the black market.
- Yeah, I bet it would be.
[chair scrapes]
Yeah, I'll talk to you guys later.
[chair scrapes]
I think the crazy doc forgot his video.
[tape rattles]
[chuckles] Bingo.
[student chuckles]
- Damn, I forgot the tape.
[eerie music]
[cloth rustles]
[upbeat music] [video game sound effects]
[ambient arcade sounds]
[crickets chirp]
[taps tape]
[buttons click] [eerie music]
- Hey Randy, it's me, Jerry.
Look, I got something you might be interested in.
Well, you know how you have that side business
where you duplicate the movies and sell them and rent them?
Look, I have a movie,
but this, this one is something
that you have never seen.
It's a snuff movie.
Yes, I'm serious.
Look that, that's why I thought...
Okay, okay, okay.
Are you interested?
Okay, all right. [urgent music]
Let's say 300 bucks.
It's worth every penny.
Okay, okay, okay, 250, but that's it.
If you pass, I'm gonna call your competitor Benjamin, okay?
Okay, don't get sore.
Do we have a deal?
Perfect.
Meet me at my dorm room tomorrow night.
See you soon.
[phone rattles]
It's like taking candy from a baby.
[faint speech] [whistle blows]
[wind whooshes]
[indistinct speech] [faint traffic noise]
[suspenseful music] [footsteps crunch]
[upbeat music]
[upbeat music continues]
[Nikki pants] [wind whooshes]
[upbeat music]
[footsteps crunch]
[upbeat music]
[upbeat music continues] [footsteps crunch]
[Nikki pants] [footsteps crunch]
[upbeat music]
[eerie music] [creature growls]
[shower curtain squeaks] [cheerful music]
[water splashes]
[shower curtain squeaks]
[cheerful music] [water splashes]
[cheerful music] [water splashes]
[heartbeat thumps]
[werewolf howls]
[werewolf growls]
[student screams]
[werewolf growls]
[werewolf howls] [heartbeat thumps]
[werewolf growls]
[shoes scrape]
[heartbeat thumps]
- That tape has to be here somewhere.
[drawer slides]
[cabinets rattle]
[werewolf growls] [suspenseful music]
Who's there? [cabinets rattle]
I said, who's there?
[eerie music]
You damn kids go home, class is over.
[eerie music]
[crickets chirp]
[urgent music]
Come on out.
I know someone's in here messing around.
I can hear you.
Maybe I won't flunk you.
[urgent music]
[werewolf growls]
Who's there?
[urgent music]
[cloth rustles] [urgent music]
[footsteps scrape]
[door thumps]
[urgent music]
[werewolf growls]
[footsteps echo]
[werewolf growls]
[button clicks]
[werewolf growls]
[teacher whimpers]
[teacher screams]
[werewolf growls]
[werewolf howls]
[eerie music]
- I'm fine, Dave, and you?
I guess that tape wasn't cursed after all.
We're still alive.
I haven't been sleeping well lately.
I've been having bad dreams.
Well, there's this creature,
it's chasing me and it catches me and attacks me,
and it's tearing me bits to bits.
I can't get away,
and it seems to enjoy torturing me.
I don't know.
I just wish it would pass.
It's really starting to worry me.
[eerie music]
[werewolf howls]
[eerie music]
[werewolf howls] [eerie music]
[Nikki gasps]
- Oh!
[Nikki sighs]
It's another dream.
[werewolf growls]
[urgent music]
[werewolf growls]
- What the hell is that?
[werewolf growls] [urgent music]
Holy shit, it's the creature for my dream!
Oh, god!
[urgent music]
[door clicks]
[urgent music]
[werewolf growls]
[urgent music]
I know I saw something.
[urgent music]
[door clicks]
[urgent music]
[peaceful music]
- Hey guys, did you hear the news?
- What?
Look, a bunch of kids got murdered last night,
and Dr. Parks got it on campus too.
- No way.
- Yeah, spattered all over the elevator
in the science building.
- That's awful.
He was such a nice man.
- Maybe the curse of the tape is real.
- Hardly.
I've watched it a couple times now.
- What, what, wait, how could you have watched it?
- I took it from the VCR in Dr. Park's office.
And besides, he doesn't need it anymore.
- You have to turn it over to the police.
- As if, it's my property now,
and I have big plans for it.
- Like what?
- I know a tape pirate
who says he is gonna give me big money.
There's a huge market for snuff tapes.
- [Nikki] That's lower than low.
- You guys don't get it.
I'll catch you around later.
[peaceful music]
[footsteps crunch]
Screw those guys.
They don't know what they're talking about.
Look, I'm gonna watch this one more time
before I ship you off.
All right.
[tape rattles]
[static hisses]
[eerie music]
[static hisses] [eerie music continues]
[static hisses] [eerie music continues]
