- That roof wood is gone beyond repair.

I didn't mess it up.

- You didn't order enough. That's messing it up.

- We need to get this project wrapped up.

- Oh, my God. That's not light.

- We're not done. We're very close,

but there still always can be a hiccup.

- I think we're ready to see it inside.

(Randy): I'm Randy Spracklin, third generation builder,

proud Newfoundlander.

My team and I are building on a giant cliff

in the Atlantic Ocean.

They don't call it a rock for nothing!

We fight the elements year-roud

to get the job done.

It might be tough for some, but not for us.

Because when this is your view, it's worth it.

(upbeat rock music)

(Randy): Summertime in Newfoundland, can't beat it.

It's a short season, but it's the best.

I love days like this. No wind, rain or fog.

It's perfect.

I got a landscaping job to do for a returning client.

It's not our typical job, but on days like this,

I got no problem being outside.

- What do you need while you're digging this right here?

- Not that stuff.

- Just lay it in there.

This is a pretty cool time of year.

A lot of people come from away

to experience the ocean, the whales.

You can never tell what a whale is gonna do.

He's got a mind of his own, so you just watch,

and when you hear the spray or you see him breach,

you might see just his back fi, you might see the whole tail,

you might see all of him come out of the water,

but you never know.

(upbeat folk music)

It's something I grew up aroun,

but it never gets old to be able to sit there,

look out over the water, watch the whales,

the seagulls go by, the puffins.

Puffins are unique little bird.

They got a lot of, you know, colouring to them.

They kind of sit on the edge of the cliff.

I'll definitely take the kids to go watch the puffins,

see them eat the capelin.

And when they eat a lot of the, they can't really fly.

You know, can't move on a full belly.

Hey, that's a capelin boat.

That's actually a boat from Brigus.

Right now is capelin season, and you never know.

Out on the bay, there's tons of capelin.

They come in swarms, they'll beach on here

in Newfoundland to lay their eggs.

A lot of people love to go out and catch them

because they're good eating when you fry them up

or put them on the barbecue.

The sooner I gets this job done,

the sooner I can get on the water. Can't wait!

(upbeat music)

It's summer season, which means we're busier than ever.

One, two, three.

In Brigus, the team's been helping me and my father

catch up on the house we're building for my mom.

It's taken a lot of favours to get to this point.

But it's finally ready for the inside work.

Over in Bay Roberts,

we're renovating a century-old barn

in Cory and Leo's backyard.

It's gonna be a cool entertaining space

and a place for guests to stay.

We must be doing something right, 'cause they asked us

the price of an addition for the back of their house.

(Randy): And then up on the hil looking over Brigus,

there's the massive Mitchell house.

So big day today. We got the cabinets delivering.

We're here at Mitchells' and, uh...

we're getting close to the end.

This has been a huge renovation that we're a year into,

and it's been hit with so many challenges.

Delays with the beams...

We gotta use the torch, 'cause we gotta

make these holes bigger.

Changing plans...

- So the fireplace itself will be changed too,

the actual unit.

- Okay so that's a change, see?

- There you go. (laughing)

The weather...

- So all the strapping

is froze to the ground.

- Delays in shipments...

They would normally be delivered,

but we decided to come in and get them ourselves.

And the homeowners, Dave and Deana

want their house back, like, yesterday.

- We need to get this project wrapped up.

We always thought it would be a year,

but it's dragged on for various reasons.

- I just imagine sitting there

with the fire, knitting.

- I'm envisioning those two doors from the porch

opening up, and in come a bunch of my sailor friends,

and say, "Hey, we're here! We're here for the party!"

- Which is a bit of a departure from my quiet little...

knitting evening. - Right.

(Randy): The good news is we're almost ready for them

to move back in.

This has been a $450,000 renovation.

We built two new additions,

including one for a massive kitchen.

- Bam!

- The new kitchen is huge, with a vaulted ceiling

and a large window for loads of light.

Everything is custom to fit the space,

and there's no expense spared

on high-end appliances throughout.

We're gonna have a beautiful stove right here,

fridge, big sink,

not only one dishwasher, two.

Opening the space means more room for entertaining,

dining or just hanging out.

We got the shiplap done, but we're waiting for that

big, huge piece of granite to go in.

(upbeat music)

Today, it's just a great feelig

to see the kitchen come together.

All the pieces are coming in now,

and this is the final piece of the home.

Once this is done, they can move back in,

and on to a kitchen party.

(bright music)

On the shores of Bay Roberts, we're getting ready

to pour a concrete floor in the barn.

(Randy): This building been around for 100 years,

and it'll probably be around for another 100 years

when we're done with it.

- Spracklin! - What?

- Throw that the other way so it's not in my face.

(Randy): On the main floor is gonna

be an entertaining space with a large dining table,

lots of seating, a bar area,

and we're installing a vintage wood stove to keep things warm.

The top floor is gonna be a lot with a large dormer

for loads of light, and a place for guests to crash.

Today, we're prepping the floor for concrete.

(Nikki): Okay go back by the right.

- Nikki and Cody did a great job

getting the floor on grade and ready for concrete.

- I need you on top of the 2x4 first,

and your stick as plum as you can go. -

- Okay.

- Gotta go tight to the 2x6. Yeah. Right there.

(Randy): Cody's been helping us during this busy time,

and they're both learning a lot.

- Okay. So, this line here

is still where I want to hold, so put me on the ground.

- And you still want that? - Make sure I'm right here.

- But on this job, Nikki the student,

has become Nikki the teacher. That's awesome.

- Randy, you're dead on 4'4, like dead on.

(upbeat music)

(Randy): With the floor level, we can finish the prep

for the concrete.

We're using the tamper, and it's like a big vibrating

machine that compacts all the fresh fill

that we put in the barn.

And then we gotta put down the vapour barrier,

seal it up, and get it ready for concrete.

- I can't even tape a straight line.

Look at that! I'm like, oh geez!

(meowing)

(Randy): At the same time, Cory and Leo

want to add on to the back of their house.

They wanted to make like, a greenhouse slash sun room.

It's phase two of their reno plan

after we finish the barn, but since we're pouring concree

for the barn's floor, it's perfect timing

to do it for the new addition too.

That means I gotta dig down about eighteen inches

for the concrete footings, and I gotta have it

done today so we can have the forms ready for concrete.

How's this?

There's water coming in here.

- Why is there water in there? Just groundwater?

- If it is the water line, like it's not very deep.

(Randy): At Cory and Leo's,

we thought we were getting ahed of the game

for a phase two project, but when we started digging

for the addition at the back of the house...

- Why is there water in there? Just groundwater?

- I'm thinking it might be the well.

There's an old well next to Cory and Leo's barn,

and it's got plenty of fresh water.

I think it's probably runoff of that.

Since the ground is so saturated below,

the best solution is a concrete pad

because we won't have to dig down and build the forms,

which saves on the budget.

So I've got to talk to the homeowner,

and figure out which way we're gonna go.

(upbeat folk music)

Back in Brigus, another day, and another custom piece

to install at the Mitchells' house on the top of the hill.

- Well, I can only go as far as I am right now.

- Alright, I'm good on my side. - Oh, my God. That's not light.

(Randy): We built two new additions on the house,

one for an entrance and a mudroom,

and the other for a massive kitchen with a view.

Today, Paul, Al, Nikki and Cody and I are installing

the new door to the mudroom, and it's heavy.

- Relying on the big muscle here now.

Oh. We're bouncing.

This is my first time putting in a door with no brick mould.

- This is my first time putting in a door this big.

- You're flush on my side.

(Randy): The homeowner spared no expense on this reno.

Not only is the door custom, but the paint job as well.

We've been waiting a couple of months

to install it, but it's worth the wait.

- Don't shut that door. My hand's there.

- It looks mint! - She's dead on there, now.

(elegant folk music)

(Randy): It's concrete day at the barn.

While I'm waiting for the team and the concrete to arrive,

I got a spare moment. Why not double check

if I'm right about the water flow underground?

So I'm gonna find water.

This is what we call like a witching stick

to find water. So, you take two coat hangers,

and you make, like, an L shape,

and you hold them, and when they cross over,

you found water. Boom.

So, there's the well end at this point.

Some old people uses like, wooden sticks.

That don't seem to want to work for me but, uh,

coat hangers work perfect.

It's already starting to go.

Boom. So, you put a dot and a dot on the well,

and I'll go down farther.

Do people think I'm crazy? Around here, no.

Some people got it, some people don't.

I know my father got it.

We should try Grady, see if he got it.

(meowing) And the cat believes me.

Look. He's convinced.

(truck beeping)

Concrete's here, getting ready to load it in the machine,

bring it up, get this floor done.

That's a good day!

The biggest challenge today, the truck won't fit

past the main house.

So, we gotta haul it one mini dump truck load

at a time. I think Cody's up for the task.

Everything is going good.

The mini dump is working out well.

It was a little bit nerve-racking putting Cody

on the mini dump...

(honking)

(laughing) ...but he got in there

without putting a scratch on the door.

(upbeat music)

We're halfway done, and you're gonna see

something different. We actually got it tinted.

So, normal concrete is like a light grey.

We got like, a dark grey dye I put into the concrete,

so when it dries, it looks dark grey.

It's giving it a little bit of a modern twist to it.

The day went good.

The team did great. Everybody chipped in,

pulled their weight, so it was awesome day,

and they did an awesome job.

Time to celebrate with a little fun.

I wonder who else got the water witching gift.

So you hold this. See how it ain't hitting it?

(Nikki): Let me try.

(upbeat music)

Holy God! It does it too!

(Randy laughing) I thought you were turning it

for sure! I almost would've bet with you

that you were turning it! - Darn!

- That's cool! That's cool!

- Paul's turn.

We're always competing against each other,

so when Nikki can do something, you know Paul gotta do it too.

Definitely a little bit of,

"Anything you can do, I can do better."

(Randy): No.

(Randy and Nikki laughing)

- You don't have it either.

- So what causes some people to do it, some people not?

- Uh, it's the, uh, electroids in your body.

- I got the flare, Paul. You don't got the flare.

(Randy): Overlooking Brigus, we're inching closer

to finishing up the Mitchells' house.

There's a mountain of work on top of the hill,

inside and out.

Outside, we got the landscapers finishing the driveway.

The shed is getting a fresh coat of paint.

Nikki and Paul are working on the deck,

so it connects to the new addition.

- Okay. Okay.

- And I'm helping out in the backyard

getting the area ready for some new trees.

Inside, a new set of stairs has been installed.

The electrician is adding new pot lights

throughout the whole house,

and upstairs, the master bathroom

is being transformed.

The new walk-in shower is getting floor-to-ceiling

tiles with a built-in shelf

that will have an accent of ble to give it a coastal feel.

I can see the finish line.

It won't be long before Dave and Deana

can finally move back in.

(upbeat folk music)

Back at the hundred-year-old barn

in Bay Roberts,

we're working on the top floor,

where we're creating a catty loft space.

Big day today.

We got all the concrete floor done.

We got pretty much the full team, minus Nikki.

So, we got Al, we got the old man, we got Paul,

and we got Cody.

The old man now is on the back putting on the eaves.

Paul's working on the roof, and he's got to remove

part of the roof, because we're gonna build

that dormer, so we're adding more head space,

and it'll be more room to get them stairs going up.

- So we got about 80 inches of window.

You're looking at coming in from the outside, Randy...

- Four. - Uh... to kick this side

of that there, will be probably 54 inches.

(Randy): We're turning the top floor

of Cody and Leo's hundred-year-old barn

into a loft. It will be a great place

to relax, hang out, especially with a dormer

overlooking the yard.

So, we're gonna add a lot of light,

and a lot of ceiling height.

- We'll frame it pretty much just flat

to get to the outside. - Yeah.

- Whatever, it will look good.

- We're about to cut the roof, so we definitely don't want

that wall to fall down, and we don't want to lose

the other part of the roof.

- So... cut gentle.

- Yeah. I'll nibble it away.

(Randy): There's always concers working with an old building,

especially working on the roof.

We gotta take out a section of the roof,

which is a little bit tricky.

You know, we don't want the whole roof to collapse.

Paul got this, though.

- Cody, clean up, aisle one.

(laughing)

- You got a hole cut?

- Yeah. Just figuring out how I'm gonna get this

little bit of junk out of the way there now.

I got one more rough cut

to make down through there, then we can start tying this

back in, and making it look like a roof again.

- Nice.

- The roof probably wouldn't have lasted much longer,

'cause you can see where the water been coming through

and the rot and everything, and it's all starting

to get pretty crumbly and gone there now,

it's a good time to be doing it. - That roof wood is...

gone beyond repair.

Only good for fertilizer.

- The tarp is good to get you by,

but it really don't last.

- No. Definitely wouldn't have lasted another winter,

this roof, so it's a good thing we're at it now.

It's gonna be a lovely space when we're all said and done.

Hey, I'll let you finish opening the rest of the hole

and get her framed up.

(upbeat music)

The new dormer will be a great feature.

Not only will it allow more light into the space,

but it'll add more head room too.

Paul, Al and my dad can easily frame it up now

that the roof is open,

and it'll be ready for window install in no time.

(upbeat folk music)

Codfish in season. Rods ready to go.

We've been pushing hard all week,

so when you get a sunny weeken, you gotta hit the open waters.

Today is the day we're gonna try to catch a big codfish.

(Nikki): You gotta take advantage

of your jigging season.

- Usually when July hits, we hit the water.

(laughing) (Nikki): We're gonna retire

our tool belts for fishing poles.

(Randy): On the trip today, we got Nikki, Al, the old man,

Derek who works in the office, and Melissa, my wife.

It's gonna be fun.

Very important to take the team out.

We're always working hard and trying to get jobs done,

and what better thing to do than come out and enjoy

a nice sunny day to go fishing on the water?

We're getting ready to see if we can catch a fish.

So, after you catch the fish, we bring them in,

we filet them, and then we bring them home

and fry them up, or deep-fry them,

whatever tickles your fancy.

- And then you have the scoff right after.

You gotta have your homemade fries, your fish,

dressing, salad. It's good to go.

- Oh. Tail!

The whales are only around a few months of the year,

and when you see them, it's a catty thing.

We're trying to jig a fish there now.

You let it go to the bottom,

bring it up a little bit. - Ooh. Scott got one!

- He got one already, did he?

(Nikki): Come on. It's only a baby.

- A sculpin!

- Sculpin are bad little fish we don't want.

They got like, spikes on their head,

and they're not nice to eat.

Got one, Al?

(Nikki): Bring her onside. (Randy): Oh, no.

(Nikki): Let's see what I got to beat. Let's see what...

- Oh you said it don't count for the first one!

Oh, he's not bad, though.

(Scott): That's nice. That's not a bad filet.

- No.

- I'm just waiting for the big one. That's all.

Oh, there's definitely competition.

We ain't going out there without competition.

- Maybe I'll win my 100 bucks back.

- Oh, no. Gotta see who gets the pride of catching

the biggest one. What's the loser gotta do?

- The loser gotta cook today, so we'll sit back

with our feet up, and the loser will do all the cooking.

- That's a deal.

- Nikki hasn't caught a fish yet, so I don't know

how she's betting when she's not even catching anything.

(Randy laughing) - Caught a fish!

Fish on! - It's a nice one too.

- Here you go. Do your deed.

(Scott): He's not giant.

- No. Hey.

- We're not going in 'til I gets one.

I don't care if it's tomorrow.

- I think mine's bigger. (laughing)

- Oh! - Nikki, you got one?

(Scott): A giant one!

(Randy): Look, look, look. Here he comes! Here he comes!

Yeah. Look, see the white? - Oh my gosh!

(Randy): See the white? Decent fish. Decent fish!

- Get it aboard the boat. - Look!

- I got a fishy!

I got a fishy! Oh!

(Randy): Decent fish!

(cheering)

(Randy): Off the shores of Brigus, me and Nikki

got a little bet on the go.

- Oh! (Nikki laughing)

Whoever catches the biggest fish wins,

and don't have to cook supper for everyone.

- Let's see yours.

Wah-wah!

(laughing) (Scott): There you go!

(Al): Just a little bit bigger, Nikki.

- Two inches maybe. I guess I'm cooking the fish.

(upbeat music)

- Hey, you.

Look at the fish.

Freshest fish you're ever gonna find

anywhere in the world,

and definitely some fish is bigger than others.

Is that right, Nikki? - Yeah. We heard ya.

(Randy): Work, family, friends.

For us, it all blends together and I wouldn't have it

any other way.

- Spracklin, come on.

Get your hands out of that and come help.

- I'm in here trying to prep fish.

She only got one job, cook French fries.

A big tray of codfish all floured up

and ready to be dipped in the batter,

and then deep-fried.

(Nikki): I'm already on the pot.

I've been cooking all along, waiting for him.

- Because we want... I'm cooking too,

'cause we wants this to be, like, mint.

(Nikki): Is that Paul showing up?

(Randy): I don't know. I think.

- Good time for him to show up. It's almost ready to eat.

(Nikki): Oh, my God.

(Randy): What were you doing all day?!

- Everything's cooked and ready to go!

- How come some are, like, more cooked than the others?

- Well, the cooked ones are nibble ones.

You nibble on them while you're cooking your feed.

Paul's just sitting back waiting.

- Look how white that is, that little piece.

- See? I cooked them nibble fries for Paul, see?

Nibble fries for Paul.

- Yeah. You gotta salt them. (Randy): They're not ready

to go yet!

(upbeat music)

This is what it's all about. Family, friends,

getting together at the end of the week,

having a fish fry. Living good in Newfoundland.

(Randy): This is the week. I can feel it in the air.

Not so many phone calls.

The to-do list is getting smaller.

I think we're getting close to wrapping this job up

on top of the hill.

The Mitchell job is going good.

We're getting close to the end.

Just some final touching, measuring up for the granite

around the fireplace, the mantel,

finishing up, you know, a little bit on the cabinets.

And the upstairs, the tiling's done

in the master shower, so Paul's putting in a new

floating vanity. It's got a walnut finish

that works with the rest of the house.

And it's a great feature in this room.

The wood really warms up the space

next to the new tile.

We're not done. We're very close.

There still always can be a hiccup.

(lively music)

I gotta get some lumber to do the eaves for Cory's barn.

We're in St. John's to an old mill.

It's one of the old mills left around.

Like, there's not too many of them left on the island,

so we're here to pick up some lumber,

'cause we gotta finish the barn out in Bay Roberts.

Today, we're looking for some 1x6, 1x5, and 2x10s.

That's a winner.

Because we're working on an old barn that's over

100 years old, they used rough lumber.

They never went to a lumberyard

that was all smooth and stuff,

so we want to keep that histor, keep that vintage look.

So we come to a lumberyard.

It's the exact same way that they did it 100 years ago.

This piece of wood is huge.

You know, you're looking at probably, ooh,

I'd say about 20 inches.

Oh, you could do a lot with that piece of wood.

So the lumber that we got now, some of it is for the roof

at the barn, some more is for the eaves,

and the big stick of lumber that we needed

was for the windowsills, 'cause we got to fix them

old windows, bring them back to life.

This is one of the last mills on the east coast

that they would cut to fit.

You make what you want.

Definitely like a candy store. You know, all the lumber around

and the beauty about this place,

you can pick a big log, they'll cut it to the size

you want, the thickness you want, so yeah.

I love being here.

(upbeat music)

So you take one big tree, put it on a big saw,

cut it all down,

and make pieces we can use.

People want to use it for, you know,

vintage-looking pieces.

Perfect.

Mantels, tables, so...

I need to get it now before everybody else buys it.

Now that's a nice piece of wood. We're golden.

(upbeat music)

I don't mind travelling the extra distance,

especially to an old mill,

but today, I'm also the delivery truck,

so it's back to the barn so we can finish up the roof.

Lumber's here!

(Randy): I didn't mess it up.

(Nikki): You didn't order enough. That's messing it up.

(laughing) - You take that one, Paul.

- We'll just walk up there.

(Scott): Where'd you get that to?

That's that right there.

Five 2x6x8, three 2x8x8.

- Six... - 1x5x8.

That was around the windows. (Randy chuckling)

So what happened to the 22 1x6? That means we got none?

- Apparently, this number here, I never got.

- Come on. Stop standing around. Work with what we got.

You messed up the order, you messed it up.

- Back to the lumberyard. Mint!

(Randy): We've been working on the Mitchell house

for about a year, and it's almost ready.

But first, I'm meeting Sam and Sasha at the shop

to go over a game plan to finish things up.

They done some amazing work with me before,

and I need them to do it again.

Dave and Deana have been waiting a long time,

and I want them to be blown away.

This is a brand new project.

We need some finishing touches.

I'm glad you're chiming in,

'cause there's a whole lot of changes.

- Oh. It looks great.

Let's just start with this kitchen.

- This kitchen is huge. - Massive.

- Yeah. - And that is a kitchen I think

that everyone dreams of.

- It's gorgeous. It's gonna be perfect for entertaining.

You got the views of the ocean. You're up on that hill.

(Randy): It's a million-dollar view outside, inside.

- One hundred percent. So if we're gonna be doing dark

blue cabinetry, I know she's not afraid of colour.

- Absolutely. Why don't we do some light-blue walls?

Really complement the rich blue that's in the cabinetry.

And we'll just keep it really modern.

(Randy): Sounds wonderful.

They love entertaining, so a big kitchen

with a lot of features.

- So kind of like a restaurant feel.

- Definitely a restaurant feel.

- Yeah. We can bring in some wood, bring in some glass,

and that'll really complement the blue as well.

- And then we have to keep in mind,

off of that space, there's a little sitting area.

I know she loves to knit, have a little quiet time,

so we need to think of some furniture that's gonna fit

properly in that space with the dining table

so that it flows properly from the kitchen

to the dining, to the living room.

- Right. Exactly.

- What's happening in that living room with that fireplace?

- This is gonna be a real wood burning fireplace,

shiplap floor to ceiling, granite on the front of it,

kind of big stone look and walnut mantel.

- That'll be beautiful. - That's gonna be such a focal

piece and so maybe we can do the back wall there

by the stairs in that coral colour, and bring in

that colour there. - That punch of colour

for Deana. - Yeah. So that we're getting

a lot of interest when we look over that way.

- Yeah. That'd be really nice.

(Randy): They had a small mudroom before,

so we extended it, made a bigger mudroom,

a lot of light, so it's kinda like a mudroom

slash sunroom, and we got two big

French doors going into it. - Oh, nice.

- Yeah, yeah. For sure.

- And then we've got those nice big tiles

that have got some colour going on, some movement.

- I think they're great, especially for Newfoundland.

We're gonna have the salt and sand coming in

from the outdoors. This will mask it a lot on the floor.

Easy clean up, but in the summer, it'll also

shine really well too. And I think it's a good enough

space that we actually could put in a nice bench

or something there as well. - Definitely. Utilize it

as a sunroom as well as a back porch, yeah.

- Oh definitely. Now that we got downstairs

all figured out, we need to beautify the upstairs.

We got a master bedroom that she wants to make

look pretty. - Maybe we can do a little bit

of a soft light colour on the walls.

- Love that. - I know that Deana was talking

about maybe doing a mural.

- Yeah, maybe like an ocean inspired mural.

That would be really nice. - And so I'm thinking

with that that dark mural wall on the back,

we might want to do also something a little bit strong,

like a little bit of a stronger headboard to kinda tie into it,

to give that strength of grounding it,

and then we have some nice light bedding to go with it.

- Yeah, and maybe ground the space with a rug?

- That'd be really nice. - Yeah, it'd be beautiful.

- Yeah, love that.

- So sounds like we got a plan until Mitchell calls,

and then we're off the rails.

- Yeah. He's calling you for sure.

- Yeah. - Oh, definitely. Change order.

(Randy): Up on the hill overlooking Brigus,

the time has finally arrived.

Sam and Sasha is working their magic,

putting everything together before Dave and Deana

walk through the door.

- So the whole house is basically done

in a light blue. Dave and Deana love colour,

especially Deana. It's got some warm blues,

some dark blues. It's a beautiful feel

that ties into the ocean.

(Sam): So we also brought in kind of an unexpected

coastal colour with the coral accent wall

that's going up the stairs behind the fireplace.

That's also used in a lot of our accessories,

our rugs, and our window treatments,

and cushions, and things like that as well.

So we brought it throughout the home.

- So we used a lot of wood in the space.

The main piece of wood I feel are the pieces

that are on the island.

They really are something that you kind of see

as soon as you come in, and then also it incorporates

as well into the floating shelves.

As soon as you put wood in anything,

it warms it up.

- We really mixed our metals, which is a lot of fun,

and totally okay, so we have brass in the lighting,

we have black in the curtain rods.

- We actually even had some of our cushions

had some of the brown tones that were like the wood,

but also some of the black in it,

so there's little tiny details that you don't really

think about, but when you go down and look at each piece,

they're made to kind of work together.

(upbeat music)

- It feels really good to be finished.

It's been a long time coming.

We battled some harsh elements.

- I got lots of clothes on, double layers,

good, good quality gloves.

My nose is here but it's running down that way.

- We're just waiting for Dave and Deana to pull up.

This is gonna be her first time seeing it

since we looked at the plans.

And you remember when you came here the last time, Deana,

we had to walk around the front. - Yeah.

- It's gonna be exciting to see it for the first time.

- Let's go up and check out this lovely

front door that you have. - Wow!

- I love it. Do you like it? - I do too.

- Really? - I like the way it blends in

with the siding and the soffits.

I think it come together nicely.

- It did. This whole covered area looks amazing.

- I think so too. - I think we're ready

to see it inside. - You think?

- Absolutely. After you!

- So this is a new mudroom that we added on, new entrance.

- So none of this is the original space?

- None of this is original.

And in here we got big tiles with in-floor heat

so that should keep your feet warm...

- Love the floor too.

- ...dry up any water when you're coming in

in the wintertime.

- I feel like this is not like a normal porch.

This is an environment all its own.

You could come out here and have your coffee if you want.

- Every part of this house had me, even the porch.

- Most entrances don't feel like this.

- No. - I love it.

- Good job.

This is fabulous.

- Oh my gosh.

- What a difference, guys!

This is a fabulous job, Randy.

- It is... - It looks amazing.

I don't know where to look first.

- I love it. It's a lot of counter space.

It's a big island for entertaining.

- I love the colours!

That view and the blues. It's perfect.

- Wow. Look at this.

(laughing) - Oh my gosh.

- Isn't that something? =

- Yeah. The shiplap on the vaulted ceilings

is a great feature.

Everywhere you turn, there's something custom,

there's something special, from the cabinetry,

to how we lay the flooring.

The finishes really set it apart.

- I would never have pictured the kitchen like this.

When I try to think of the other kitchen...

- Your wall actually started right here,

so we added all this space,

so many windows, so much light coming inside.

(Dave): Wow. What a nice job.

- It's just so much more spacious!

And this, the light in this is gorgeous.

- That was a nice touch as well, yeah.

- Do you like the shape of the window?

- Love it.

- It looks amazing. It took a little bit to get in.

To make that fit just perfect,

and then with the cedar on the front of it,

but when you're actually here to the sink,

it don't even seem like you got a window.

You're just looking outside. - I like the fact

that the countertop is level with the window,

so there's no gaps, you know?

- No. - Given this is the...

southwest corner, you can imagine

what's gonna flow in here in the evenings.

- This house is a showstopper, not only the house,

but the views. To be able to sit here in the kitchen

and look out over. You got your covered deck.

Plus, there's a wraparound deck,

so an amazing place to entertain outside and inside.

- It's a great place to have a gathering.

It's a wonderful thing.

- Oh. Tons of space here now, floor space.

(Deana): For sure. - Plus Deana, you got your own

little corner now.

- Oh my gosh.

- Now this is a cozy nook

- Okay. Try out your sitting area, Dave,

see if you like it.

- I think this is nice. The view. Look at the view.

(Randy): You definitely got the best view of Brigus.

Sitting on top of the hill, you're almost the highest point.

- I think so too.

- So if you can remember, that was only a little doorway.

(Dave): Right.

There was a wall here.

- There was another wall with a doorway.

- This was a room of its own, really.

- It was. And then we even extended that wall

to fit that couch.

Definitely works well with the kitchen.

- Excellent. It's the flow, right? It's a wonderful flow.

- Let's take a look at your living room.

- Oh, my. - Ooh!

Now, this is nice

- It is just a feast for the eyes.

- It is.

- And we got rid of them old beams.

- Right. The beams are gone.

- The beams are gone. - And the glass.

- And the railing. - It's beautiful.

- We did a whole new staircase

to kinda match the flooring, the look.

- Beautiful. And it's a perfect match.

- And the fireplace. Look!

(laughing) - I can't believe it!

This space, it didn't change in shape, except this doorway.

(Randy): Yes.

- But it looks so different.

- If you remember the old fireplace,

it was still a wood burning, but it had a little bit

of an angle, and then it had that old stucco on it.

- Ugh. I remember it well.

- The old stone. (laughing)

- It just looked awkward, and now, you know,

with the fireplace in the centre

and it being full width all the way up,

shiplap all the way to the top.

You know, it's got a modern touch to it,

but yet it looks coastal with the pebble granite.

- Nice on a sunny day, but nice in a snowstorm as well.

- Oh my gosh, yes. - Absolutely.

And we get lots of snowstorms, so...

- Oh, we had a few while we were building this.

The weather was... it was horrid.

Trying to get this place built, worst snowstorm in history.

- So all the strapping

is froze to the ground, and so you gotta

beat it all apart, take it and use it.

- We did a little bit of blowing through our fingers.

(laughing)

And if you remember,

two of you were stood in that spot,

and that was the first change that Dave threw out

that you didn't know and I didn't know.

- So, the fireplace itself will be changed too?

The actual unit?

- Okay, so that's a change, see? (laughing)

- See? There you go.

- I can remember over the course of the last while,

Dave said, "I've gotta text Randy and talk to him

about this." Or, "I've gotta call Randy."

And I'm thinking, "Oh, poor Randy."

(laughing) But you did, you did good.

- Oh, thanks.

You gotta go with the punches, you know?

Change is a norm in renovation.

Over the years, I've just been used to that.

If they're happy, we're happy, and that's what it's all about.

So, what do you think? Do you approve of everything

down here? - One hundred percent.

- Well done, Randy. Well done.

- We still got one special place to go, and that's upstairs.

- Oh my gosh.

It is beautiful!

- The wallpaper is more like artwork than it is...

- It is. - ...anything else.

It's amazing.

- You definitely achieved that there.

Imagine sitting down, waking up in the morning,

looking at the view out over Brigus.

We even added in another window to bring in lots of light.

- I know, look. Gorgeous. It's perfect.

- A very, very calming space. - Calming. It's calming.

- But we didn't let any room in this house be untouched,

so not only your master bedroom, but your master bath.

- Wow. This is exactly what we wanted.

- Beautiful.

- We wanted to get rid of the tub and have...

- Gorgeous. - ...a walk-in shower.

The tile work is exceptional, Randy.

- It is. - The tile is beautiful.

- We even got your sun tunnel there to bring in some light,

'cause we lost that window. - Oh, right. Good idea.

Was that your idea, Randy? The sun tunnel?

- I can't take all the credit.

- I think that was mine. - Dave's listening.

(laughing)

- I wanted this to have

like a nautical, coastal feel to it,

but I didn't want it to scream it,

and I feel like that's what this is.

- This house is a showstopper.

Up on here on top of the hill in Brigus,

everybody can see it. It's amazing.

(Deana): Okay. Time to invite the crowd over.

- It is. - Time to have a party,

try out the new kitchen, the new dance floor?

You even got the rubber boots there.

(Randy): Got the whole team here. Feels really good.

You know, this is what it's all about.

We got another project done. Everybody can come in,

celebrate, enjoy the space. It's a win-win.

- So you're pleased? - Oh, a hundred percent.

- That makes me feel awesome. Good. Wicked.

- Amazing. - Good.

This place all finished for me is amazing.

Every little detail in here was a first for me.

The steel beams, the roof, the finishes.

It's wicked.

Not to toot our building techniques,

but it came out pretty catty.

- Everyone's been so professional,

and everything is... no complaints.

I feel really satisfied

and happy with everything,

the workmanship, the decor.

- Whenever you do a project like this,

you know what your input is,

but you never know what others are gonna put into it,

so I think, you know, we've been both

pleasantly surprised with this experience with Randy.

- Definitely. - So Esther Williams

was Deana's grandmother.

- So, the name of this house is going to be Esther's Perch.

(Dave): Esther Williams would have loved to experience

all of this and...

(Deana): To be up on top of the hill,

nosing around at whatever's going down on below.

This is kind of like representative of her

and her place.

- So here we are. - Cheers to Esther.
