[applause]

Greetings from New York City.

[applause]

Give it up for The Roots out there.

Give it up for the dancers.

Welcome, everybody, to the "SNL 50, Homecoming Concert."

[applause]

We are coming to you live from Radio City Music Hall.

And I'm out of breath.

[laughter]

Yeah, what an unbelievable collection of talent

here in this building.

[applause]

It is Valentine's Day.

Happy Valentine's Day, everybody.

[applause]

I thought this was sweet.

Where you're seated is based on how much Loren loves you.

[laughter]

I was so honored when the assistant to Loren's assistant

asked me to host tonight.

[laughter]

You may be wondering, why am I hosting tonight?

Well, it's award season, which means I got

nothing going on right now.

[laughter]

But actually, I have two things in common with SNL.

This year we both turned 50.

[applause]

And if we're being honest, we both peaked around 25.

[laughter]

Tonight we're celebrating 50 years of music

from "Saturday Night Live."

We have so many of your favorite artists here tonight.

Lady Gaga is here.

Bad Bunny.

Snoop Dogg.

Cher.

Post Malone.

[applause]

Plus some of your favorite SNL performers

from throughout the years.

Now, before we start the show, I want to quickly mention that

everyone here tonight has either

worked at "Saturday Night Live" or is

connected to someone who has.

So can we turn the cameras around?

Can we turn the cameras around?

Make sure you get everyone on camera because without these

people, there would not have been 50 years

of "Saturday Night Live."

[applause]

Thank you so much.

Give yourselves around of applause.

There's a lot of love in this room.

Let's keep the love going.

Our first performer is one of the best to ever do

it on "Saturday Night Live."

Here to celebrate an iconic SNL performance of "Crazy Little

Thing Called Love" with a little help

from Brittany Howard and The Roots,

give it up for Miley Cyrus.

[applause]

Buenas noches, y bienvenidos de nuevo

a la aniversario de 50 años de "Saturday Night Live," huh?

I'm just kidding.

I know everyone here worked at SNL,

so I will speak in my best white guy accent.

(WHITE GUY ACCENT) I am Marcelo Hernandez,

and I think that you can tell by my face, my outfit, and

the amount of syllables in my name

who I am about to introduce.

[audience screaming]

Ladies and gentlemen, from Puerto Rico

[applause]

ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Nick Valentine.

[piano music]

[applause]

- Good evening, New York.

My name is Nick Valentine, and here

with me is my good friend, Paul, as luck would

have it, on Valentine's Day.

PAUL SHAFFER: What are the odds?

- I promise you, it is just a coincidence.

The day is not named after me.

February 14 has been Valentine's Day

for a good many years now, probably

before I was even born.

- I think probably longer.

- Well, I'm sure you're probably right, Paul.

You and I have been good friends, good, good friends

for such a long time.

PAUL SHAFFER: A million years, at least.

- You know, there's one question

I've always wanted to ask you.

What is your surname?

[laughter]

- Well, it's Shaffer.

Paul Shaffer, Paul.

[applause]

Oh, you don't-- you don't have to.

Thank you, though.

- Anyway, Paul and I were talking, as we are wont to do,

commenting on the fact that our society is changing.

It's growing.

And blessedly, there is an increasing acceptance

of different types of families, different types

of relationships.

And Paul here made a point that I thought was

very, very interesting, Paul.

- Well, I just said that in my opinion,

it's a fabulously nutty trend.

It is truly fabulous.

It really is.

- Bingo.

[laughter]

Bingo.

Now, a Nick Valentine may have one kind of family arrangement

that's right for him, while a Paul Shaffer

may have something else.

And then a Mr. John Jones--

I mean, it's not a real person.

Let me be clear.

That's just a fictitious name I'm

using to illustrate my point--

JJ might have a totally different type of a family.

And guess what?

That's OK.

[laughter]

[applause]

So-- so what does all this have to do with the price of rice--

[laughs] on this blustery Valentine's day?

Well, I, this Nicholas Valentine,

recently embarked on a very deep, very richly, emotionally

fulfilling relationship with three

of the most beautiful ladies a man could ever hope to meet.

[laughter]

And for those of you who have never

known or experienced the deep, richly satisfying love that--

of a man for three women, all I can say is,

it has enriched my life in ways that mere words cannot convey.

So let me see if I can try it this way.

-* You're all we need to get by *

* Ah *

* You're all *

-* Like sweet morning dew *

* I took one look at you, and you, and you *

* And it was plain to see *

* You three were my destiny *

-* With arms open wide *

* We threw away our pride *

-* Nothing to be ashamed of, embarrassed about *

-* Dedicate our lives to you *

-* We will go where you lead *

* Always there in time of need *

-* And when I lose my will *

* You three are there to push me up the hill *

-* There's no, no looking back for us *

-* It's amazing, you three *

-* We've got a love *

* Sure enough, that's enough *

-* It's a love thing *

-* You're all *

* You're all we need *

-* To get by *

-* We need to get by *

* Ah *

- You know, Valentine's Day, you're not supposed to say it,

but I have a favorite--

-* Like three eagles protect a nest *

* For you, we'll do-- * - That was a joke.

I was kidding. That was just a joke.

-* Stand by you like three tree *

* I dare anybody to try and move we three *

-* Darlings, in you I've found *

* Strength where I was torn down *

-* Don't know what's in store *

* But together, we can open any door *

- Any door, and then lock and close it behind us.

Yes.

-* Inspire you a little higher *

-* I know you three can make a man out of a soul *

* That didn't have a goal *

-* 'Cause we *

* We've got the right foundation *

- It's unusual.

-* And with love and determination *

- You get some crazy looks, even in Brooklyn.

But I'm telling you, this relationship is working.

It's extraordinary.

It's mathematically unbelievable.

-* Under the sun wrapped up into one *

* You're all *

* You're all we need *

* You're all we need *

- I told you words wouldn't do it.

-* You're all we need *

- Ow!

-* To get by *

* We need to get by *

* Ah *

* You're all we need to get by *

- It doesn't get any better.

It doesn't get any better.

And that rhymes, ladies and gentlemen,

with Mr. Eddie Vedder!

-* To get by *

[cheering]

* Ah *

["the waiting" playing]

* *

-* Oh, baby, don't it feel like heaven right now? *

* Don't it feel like something from a dream? *

* Oh, I've never known nothing quite like this *

* Don't it feel like tonight might never be again? *

* Baby, we know better than try and pretend *

* Honey, no one could've ever told me about this *

* I said, yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah *

* The waiting is the hardest part *

* Every day you see one more card *

* You take it on faith *

* You take it to the heart *

* The waiting is the hardest part *

* *

* Yeah, I might have chased a couple women around *

* All it ever got me was down *

* Yeah, then there were those that made me feel good *

* But never as good as I'm feeling right now *

* Baby, you're the only one that's ever known how *

* To make me want to live like I wanna live now *

* I said, yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah *

* The waiting is the hardest part *

* Every day you get one more yard *

* You take it on faith *

* You take it to the heart *

* The waiting is the hardest part *

* *

How about the magic that is Questlove and The Roots?

[cheering]

* *

This is a Tom Petty song.

I sure miss that man.

I was thinking about all the people

that could be here that we'd be missing,

we will be missing tonight.

Like, I'll just say one word.

One name.

And just think, imagine if she were here.

Gilda.

[cheering]

Gilda Radner would be here.

She would not miss this.

Phil Hartman.

[cheering]

Tom Davis.

The genius, Hal Willner.

Michael O'Donoghue.

Chris Farley.

[cheering]

Norm MacDonald.

John Belushi.

[cheering]

He's in our hearts.

He's in your heart, so it feels like you could

pull him down to be here.

John, the gang is all here.

Sometimes you get lucky.

You have a dream and--

like, I had one with Tom.

And it's not even like a dream.

It's real.

You're having a conversation you've

never had before with someone that you've been missing.

And then-- and then he says, at some point, I got to go.

And you're like, no, Tom.

Tom.

Two more questions.

He says, I gotta go.

And one more question.

He says, Eddie.

Eddie.

It's going to be OK.

And then you say, but-- but just--

Tom, one.

And he says,

* Don't let it kill you, babe *

* Don't let it get to you *

* Don't let it kill you, babe *

* Don't let it get to you *

* I'll be your bleeding heart *

* I'll be your crying fool *

* Don't let this go too far *

* Don't let it get to you *

* I said yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah *

* The waiting is the hardest part *

* Every day you get one more yard *

* You take it on faith *

* You take it to the heart *

* The waiting is the hardest part *

* I said the waiting is the hardest part *

* *

* Oh *

* Yeah, it's the hardest part *

* *

[cheering]

One, two, three

* Calling Mister Oswald with the swastika tattoo *

* Now we've got trouble *

* We got coming and we don't know what-- *

No, no.

Stop, stop.

We ain't doing that.

["corduroy" playing]

* *

* The waiting drove me mad *

* You're finally here and I'm a mess *

* I take your entrance back *

* Can't let you roam inside my head *

* I don't want to take what you can give *

* I would rather starve than eat your bread *

* I would rather run, but I can't walk *

* Guess I'll lie alone just like before *

* *

* I'll take the varmint's path *

* And I must refuse your test *

* Push me and I will resist *

* This behavior's not unique *

* I don't want to hear from those who know *

* They can buy but can't put on my clothes *

* I don't want to limp for them to walk *

* Never would have known of me before *

* I don't want to be held in your debt *

* I'll pay it off in blood, let I be wed *

* No, I'm already cut up and half dead *

* I'll end up alone like I began *

* Yeah *

* *

* Yeah, yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah, yeah *

* Yeah, yeah *

* Everything has chains *

* Absolutely everything's changed *

* Take my hand, not my picture *

* Spilled my tincture *

* I don't want to take what you can give *

* I would rather starve than eat your breast *

* All the things that others want for me *

* Can't buy what I want because it's free *

* Can't buy what I want because it's free *

* Can't be what you because *

* *

* It supposed to be just fun? *

* To live and die, let it be done *

* I figure we'll all be damned *

* All alone like I began *

* *

Here we go!

Come on.

Here we go.

* *

[shouting]

* *

[cheering]

- Nightmare *

* I ain't mad at cha *

* I ain't mad at cha *

- Hey!

How's everyone doing tonight?

We're having a good time, aren't we?

How about all this music?

We got Miley Cyrus, Brittany Howard,

Bad Bunny, and Eddie Vedder.

Those are some heavy hitters.

Is everyone having a good time?

I can't hear you!

Well, I'm not.

I've been disrespected.

Lorne Michaels, you have disrespected me, bitch.

It's a night of great music, and nobody asked me to sing.

Nobody!

Dis-re-spect!

Well, I got the mic now, and I'm going to sing.

And I don't care what Lorne Michaels thinks.

He's going to be dead in a week.

It's true!

I went out to the Hamptons a while back,

and Lorne says, I'm only going to stay alive until the 50th.

Then I'm going to kick the bucket, Then I said,

please let me sing at the 50th so I can

show you how much I love you.

He said, I don't even know you.

Then he said, go park Tina's car.

That's disrespect.

He thought I was Tina's driver, which is ridiculous

because everyone knows Tina like her drivers

- Thank you.

It's our 48th anniversary this year.

Oh, 48.

Don't shave the years off, Fred.

- I said 48. - Oh, OK.

48. Woo hoo!

- Thank you.

- Thank you.

- Happy anniversary!

Give it up for the B-52s, Fred Armisen,

Bowen Yang, Sarah Sherman, and the legendary Roots crew.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Roots are going to be

our house band all night long.

What a special night this is.

How often do you get to see Ray Romano at a Backstreet

Boys performance?

- Backstreet's back, baby.

- That's right, that's right.

But this is exciting.

There are thousands of people here

and hundreds watching on Peacock.

But tonight, it's all about the music.

And there have been so many iconic SNL musical guests

over the past 50 years.

I mean, think about it.

SNL is the first place many of us were introduced to music

legends like Run-D.M.C., Nirvana, and of course,

Timothée Chalamet.

Well, before we go any further, I just

want to clear something up.

Apparently there's been some confusion.

This is just a concert.

We're not giving out any awards tonight,

so I just want to make sure that everyone knows that.

Tom?

Rita?

We lost Tom Hanks and Rita.

All right.

Sorry, it wasn't their fault.

All right.

Time for your next performance.

Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the Backstreet Boys!

Tom! Rita!

Come back.

["i want it that way" playing]

- Yeah *

- Give it up.

-* Say, you are my fire *

* The one desire *

* Believe when I say *

Help me out

-* I want it that way *

-* Tell me why *

-* Ain't nothing but a mistake *

-* Tell me why *

- Cause it's bad?

- Yes, it's very bad.

- Yeah, I could tell as soon as I started, it was off.

- Yeah.

- Maybe we skip it?

- Yeah, I think we maybe--

maybe we could do something that's

more in your vocal range?

- Yeah good thought.

Good thought, for sure.

But what?

I mean, well, there is one song,

but Justin's not here to do his parts.

[laughter]

[cheers, applause]

We love you, Uncle Lawrence.

[cheers, applause]

- "SNL 50," make some noise!

Wyclef Jean, Ms. Lauryn Hill.

- Check. - Test.

- Check, check. - Test

- Check, hot mic. - Test.

- Oh, test. - Test.

- Check, 1, 2.

- Check.

- 1, 2.

- Test, test, test.

- Popping.

- Test-- we got a--

we got a piping hot mic.

Real hot mic here. - Ah.

- Gosh.

- Ow.

- Could we, uh, could we settle?

Let's settle.

Let's settle.

Let's focus.

OK, gang?

[applause]

I think it'll settle.

Let's settle.

Let's take a deep breath and settle.

We're all going to settle.

Can we, can we uh, can we slap those sliders down?

Maybe tamp down the dbs?

- Yeah.

[mic feedback]

- Yeah, oh yeah, a lot-- oo, a lot of fuzzy

bounce on those upper EQs.

- Yeah. Can anyboty hear that?

- Nobody hears that? - Anyone?

- No? - No?

All right. - Anyway.

- Hi, there. Hi.

- I'm Marty Culp.

- Hi there.

Hi. Hi.

Yeah.

[soft piano music]

- And I'm Bobbi Mohan-Culp.

[applause]

- Wow. - Wow.

- Wow.

- What kick in the pants tonight has been so far, huh?

Wow.

- We have been backstage, and it's--

it's just a thick fog of chronic back there.

- It really is.

- A real ganja fest.

- Sure is, yeah.

I tripped on what I thought was a white mohair sweater,

but it turned out to be a real mountain of cocaine.

- Yeah.

- Just went right over it.

- Yo, rock and roll is alive and well.

- It sure is, yeah.

- We've been milling with so many celebrities.

- It's unbelievable, yeah.

- Bobbi and I talked to Ariel Grand.

- What a cutie.

What a cutie.

- For a good while, asking all of our fan

questions about "Wicked."

- About "Wicked," of course.

Yeah.

- Turns out, the whole time we were talking to Paul Shaffer.

- He looks great.

- He really does.

- And he happens to know a lot about "Wicked."

- He knows everything.

- He's a real fan.

- He should be in "Wicked."

- Yeah, yeah.

Anyways, we're so happy to celebrate

so many of our favorite past and present music students

who have returned tonight.

What fun.

- Edward Vedder.

- Yeah.

- Boy.

Boy, did he land on his feet.

- He sure did.

- He really did.

- Yeah, he landed right on his feet.

- Despite the fact he once etch "Fat dick" on our windshield.

- Very unique sound, but kind of a difficult kid.

Kind of cranky. - Yeah.

- Yeah.

Anyways, what a night.

Lucky for us, we were already here

in the Big Apple for an appointment

with a top-tier ophthalmologist following a bungled

eclipse sighting last summer.

We bought a shoddy pin camera.

It nearly cooked our eyeballs.

Happened to both of us.

- We have pretty significant floaters right now.

Uh, but it doesn't stop us from seeing

so many middle fingers peppered in both the upper mezzanine

and and orchestra section.

It's just-- it's just unbelievably rude.

- We're talking about you, Meryl Streep.

We see it.

Yeah.

[laughter]

And James Gaffigan, you can tuck those alabaster buns

right back into your trousers.

No one wants to see your buns.

- And Bad Bunny, we can hear your running commentary.

Hablamos español.

And I assure you, my wife's vagina does not shoot sawdust

like a confetti cannon.

Tití me preguntó, where's the respect?

We're all family here, gang.

- And a reminder that tonight is about music and love.

- Yeah, it sure is.

It's actually Valentine's Day.

- Yes.

- Yeah, so we invite you all to snuggle

under a musical blanket of sensual funk and

some mad fresh beats that slap, no cap.

- So buckle up.

Take a beefy honk from your spliffs.

[applause]

- Thank you.

- What an honor.

Holy smokes.

- Oh, well, that was lovely.

- Wow.

- Ladies and gentlemen.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a quick announcement for those

of you with low blood sugar.

- Yeah.

- They are offering jelly rolls near the front door.

- In the lobby. - And--

- Oh, no, oh, that's-- that's the name

of a performing artist.

- Oh, that's the name of an artist?

- Got it. - Oh.

- Got it. - Well, then, in that case--

- Ladies and gentlemen, Jelly Roll.

[cheers, applause]

- I am honored to honor the late, great Johnny

Cash tonight.

["walk the line" playing]

* I keep a close watch on this heart of mine *

* I keep my eyes wide open all the time *

* I keep the ends out for the tie that binds *

* Because you're mine, *

* I walk the line *

* *

* I find it very, very easy to be true *

* I find myself alone when each day is through *

* Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you *

* Because you're mine, *

* I walk the line *

* *

* As sure as night is dark and day is light *

* I keep you on my mind both day and night *

* And happiness I've known proves that I'm right *

* Because you're mine, *

* Bunnie, I walk the line *

["folsom prison blues" playing]

* I hear the train a-coming *

* It's rolling 'round the bend *

* And I ain't seen the sunshine *

* Since I don't know when *

* I'm stuck in Folsom prison *

* And time keeps draggin' on *

* But this train keeps a-moving *

* On down to San Antone *

* When I was just a baby, *

* My mama told me, "Son," she said *

* "Always be a good boy *

* And don't ever play with guns." *

* But I shot a man in Reno *

* Just to watch him die *

* When I hear that whistle blowin', *

* Hang my head and cry *

How 'bout Questlove and the Grammy winning Roots playing

country music tonight, y'all?

[cheers, applause]

* *

* If they freed me from this prison *

* And that railroad train was mine *

* I bet I'd move it on a little farther *

* Down the line *

* Far from Folsom prison, *

* That's where I want to stay *

* And I'd let that lonesome whistle *

* Blow my blues away *

[cheers, applause]

["ring of fire" playing]

* *

* I fell into a burning ring of fire *

* It went down, down, down *

* And the flames got higher *

* And it burns, burns, burns *

* The ring of fire *

* The ring of fire *

* Love is a burning thing *

* And it makes a fiery ring *

* Bound by wild desires *

* I fell into the ring of fire *

* I fell into a burning ring of fire *

* It went down, down, down *

* And the flames went higher *

* And it burns, burns, burns *

* The ring of fire *

* The ring of fire *

New York City, we bringing some country music to y'all tonight!

[cheers, applause]

* *

* I fell into a burning ring of fire *

* It went down, down, down *

* And the flames went higher *

* And it burns, burns, burns *

* The ring of fire *

* The ring of fire *

* And it burns, burns, burns *

* The ring of fire *

* The ring of fire *

* The ring of fire. *

I love you, Johnny Cash.

Thank you for making me who I am today.

God bless American, Country Music, and

"Saturday Night Live," baby!

[cheers, applause]

My name is Jason "Jelly Roll" DeFord.

* *

[cheers, applause]

-* Chain, chain, chain, *

* Chain, chain, chain *

* Chain, chain, chain *

* Chain, chain, chain *

- Hello!

[cheers, applause]

Good evening.

Sit down.

I'm Kate McKinnon, and--

[cheers, applause]

Thanks.

Please, this evening is so epic,

I've already run out of marijuana.

[laughter]

Tough break.

Um, look, I'm guessing the reason

I'm introducing this next iconic singer/songwriter

is that we both share expenses and kayaks with other women.

[laughter]

I'm not saying we're lesbians because I

wouldn't reduce us to that.

But a riding mower sale at Home Depot

does love to see us coming.

[laughter]

Yeah.

Let's just say we've both accidentally

hit on Keith Urban.

[laughter]

Which begs the question, did we steal his haircut,

or was it the other way around?

[laughter]

Either way, we're all lucky [chuckles]

to live in a world with this gal's voice and heart in it.

Please welcome the perfect, my fave, (BELTING) Brandi Carlile!

[cheers, applause]

Woo!

["the joke" playing]

* *

* You're feeling nervous, *

* Aren't you, boy? *

* With your quiet voice *

* And impeccable style *

* Don't ever let them steal your joy *

* And your gentle ways *

* To keep 'em from running wild *

* They can kick dirt in your face *

* Dress you down *

* And tell you that your place is in the middle *

* When they hate the way you shine *

* I see you tugging on your shirt *

* Trying to hide inside of it *

* And hide how much it hurts *

* Let 'em laugh while they can *

* Let 'em spin *

* Let 'em scatter in the wind *

* I have been to the movies *

* I have seen how it ends *

* And the joke's on them *

Hey!

* *

* You get discouraged, *

* Don't you, girl? *

* It is your brother's world *

* For a little while longer *

* You gotta dance with the devil *

* On a river to beat the stream, oh *

* I call it living the dream *

* Call it kicking the ladder *

* They come to kick dirt in your face *

* To call you weak and then displace you *

* After carrying your baby on your back *

* Across the desert *

* I see your eyes behind your hair *

* And you're looking tired *

* But you don't look scared *

* You let 'em laugh *

* While they can *

* Let 'em spin *

* Let 'em scatter in the wind *

* I have been to the movies *

* I've seen how it ends *

* The joke's on them *

* Oh-oh-oh *

* Oh oh oh oh oh *

* Your let 'em laugh *

* While they can *

* Let 'em spin *

* Let 'em scatter in the wind *

* I have been to the movies *

* I've seen how it ends *

* And the joke's on *

* Them *

* Ooh hoo ooh *

* *

* Ooh ooh ooh *

* *

[cheers, applause]

- Ladies and gentlemen, Mumford and Sons.

- 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, hey!

["i will wait" playing]

Yes, sir!

* *

* Well I came home *

* Like a stone *

* And I fell heavy *

* Into your arms *

* These days of dust *

* Which we've known *

* Will blow away *

* With this new sun *

* But I'll kneel down *

* Wait for now *

* And I'll kneel down *

* Know my ground *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* Yeah *

* So break my step *

* And relent *

* You forgave *

* And I won't forget *

* Know what we've seen *

* And him with less *

* Now in some way *

* Shake the excess *

* Come on now *

* 'Cause I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* Now I'll be bold *

* As well as strong *

* And use my head *

* Alongside my heart *

* So tame my flesh *

* And fix my eyes *

* A tethered mind *

* Free from the lies *

* But I'll kneel down *

* Wait for now *

* And I'll kneel down *

* Know my ground *

* *

* Raise my hands *

* Paint my spirit gold *

* And bow my head *

* Keep my heart slow *

* 'Cause I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

* And I will wait *

* I will wait for you *

[applause, cheering]

- Thank you very much.

We are here to represent the British who love "SNL"

and the British who love Lorne Michaels.

And tonight we're going to celebrate one of our favorite

"SNL" performances, one of our favorite songs of all time,

a song that was played on the show's third-ever

episode and again on the first broadcast after 9/11.

And to help us, we're bringing out the

legendary Uncle Jerry Douglas.

[applause, cheering]

["the boxer" playing]

* *

* Well, I am just a poor boy *

* Though my story's seldom told *

* I've squandered my resistance *

* For a pocket full of mumbles *

* Such are promises *

* All lies and jest *

* Still, a man hears what he wants to hear *

* And disregards the rest *

* When I left my home and my family *

* I was no more than a boy *

* In the company of strangers *

* In the quiet of the railway station *

* Running scared *

* Laying low *

* Seeking out the poorer quarters *

* Where the ragged people go *

* Looking for the places *

* Only they would know *

* Lie la lie *

* Lie la lie lie *

* Lie lie lie *

* Lie la lie *

* Lie la lie lie *

* Lie lie lie *

* La la la la lie *

* And asking only workman's wages *

* I come looking for a job *

* But I get again, no offer *

* Just a come-on from the whores on 7th Avenue *

* I do declare there were times *

* When I was so lonesome *

* I took some comfort there *

* And I'm laying out my winter clothes *

* And wishing I was home, going home *

* Where the New York City winters *

* Aren't bleeding me *

* And leading me *

* Going home *

* Oh, lie lie *

* Lie lie lie lie *

* La la lie *

* La la la lie lie *

* La la la *

- Mr. Jerry Douglas.

* *

* In the clearing stands a boxer *

* And a fighter by his trade *

* And he carries the reminders *

* Of every glove that laid him down *

* And cut him till he cried out *

* In his anger and his shame *

* I am leaving I am leaving *

* But the fighter still remains *

* Lie la lie *

* Lie la lie lie *

* Lie lie lie *

* Lie la lie *

* Lie la la la *

- Ladies and gentlemen, Martha Stewart.

[applause]

- Our next performer is a dear friend with whom I share

so many things in common.

Entrepreneurial instincts, a love of Epicurean

excellence, and we both spent time in the slammer

and have seen some shit.

[applause]

Of course, I'm talking about Snoop Dogg.

[applause]

a.k.a The Dogg Father.

Snoop is my ride or die no matter what you call him.

Whether we are laughing hysterically

over an improperly trussed Cornish hen

or celebrating 420 with the finest artisanal fresh herbs,

our friendship has seen us through times

of joy and harrowing, unspeakable darkness.

[laughter]

But more importantly, it has been

an incredible boom for both of our socials and bank accounts.

[laughter]

As a now canceled person once said,

it's all about the Benjamin's.

[laughter]

Ladies and gentlemen, my dear friend Snoop Dogg.

[applause]

- Snoop Dogg.

- Snoop Dogg and Jelly Roll, everybody!

We're having fun. We're doing the show.

We're watching the show.

Are you enjoying the show?

- Let's do the show!

- Enjoying the show!

- Everyone--

- We love the show!

It's so fun.

I started as an impressionist, and

half of the impressions I did for my audition

are in this room tonight.

So it really makes me nervous.

I'm having a great time.

Was-- is Sandler here?

Yeah, I started doing--

I want to thank Sandler because I started--

when you auditioned for the show, I should just mention,

you're in a room, and there's no one there, you know.

There's maybe six people.

You're there, Lorne, and there's maybe, like, two

or three other people there.

And you get nervous.

And I'm doing my act.

And I remember-- what's up buddy--

I remember Marci Klein came up to me, and she goes,

Jimmy, just so you know, Lorne doesn't laugh at everything.

So don't let it throw you if you're doing

your audition and he doesn't.

I go, OK, yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.

And then, I went in.

They go, let's do hair and makeup.

And I've never had hair and makeup in my life.

So I go in, and I get makeup on.

I get my hair done. It's unbelievable.

And I go in.

They go, hey, Jimmy, just to give you a little tip,

Lorne doesn't laugh.

So don't let it throw you if you're doing an audition,

and he doesn't. I go, OK.

And they go, go get your microphone on.

So then, I went and got my microphone on.

And the audio guy comes up to me, and he puts the mic on.

He goes, hey, Jimmy, I just want to give you a little tip.

Lorne doesn't really laugh.

And I go, I get it.

What's this guy's problem?

I mean, he's in the wrong business.

Why doesn't he laugh?

And so I went, and I did my act.

And at one part of my act, I do an impression of Adam Sandler.

And it was right after he left the show,

and no one had really done an Adam Sandler impression.

And I started with the kind of mumbling and going, how you

doing, all right?

You know, I, uh--

I-- that's right.

I went to-- hey ya, who yeh, yeh, who yeh, yeh.

Why do yeh-- shut up!

You know?

And he started laughing.

And I got-- and I got the job.

So I appreciate it, Lorne.

Thank you for the job.

And thank you, Adam Sandler.

I appreciate it.

And thank you for this crazy life that I'm living.

No, I'm going to go over to the stage

here and introduce-- are you guys having fun?

Is this unbelievable?

It's on this next level.

I love everybody here.

Oh, my gosh, what a lucky guy.

All right, here we go.

I'm going up here.

Hey, how are you guys doing in the pit?

Everything good?

You needing any water or anything?

You needing anything?

All right, good.

Oh, yeah, here we go.

All right, this-- this is my safe stage over here.

Everything works in here.

OK, ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Arcade Fire,

David Byrne and St. Vincent!

["heroes" playing]

* I, I wish I could swim *

* Like dolphins, like dolphins can swim *

* And though nothing, nothing can keep us together *

* And there's nothing *

* To tell us the weather *

* And we can be heroes, Just for one day *

* What you say *

* Yeah *

* *

* I will be king *

* And you, you will be queen *

* Though nothing will drive them away *

* We can be heroes, just for one day *

* We can be us, just for one day *

* I, I can remember *

* I remember *

* Standing by the wall *

* By the wall *

* And the guns, shot above our heads *

* Over our heads *

* And we kissed, as though nothing could fall *

* Nothing could fall *

* And the shame was on the other side *

* We can beat them, forever and ever *

* We could be heroes, just for one day *

* We can be heroes *

* We can be heroes, just for one day *

* One day *

* We can be heroes *

* One day *

* Just for one day *

* We can be heroes *

* When the days go by *

* And the days go by *

[BILLY PRESTON, "NOTHING FROM NOTHING"]

-* Nothing from nothing leaves nothing *

- This next performer is not only an incredible singer--

I'm so excited to be here!--

brilliant songwriter and genius slide guitar player,

but she also happens to have one of the best heads of hair

in all of rock and roll.

Ladies and gentlemen, the goddess Bonnie Raitt.

["thing called love" playing]

* *

-* You don't have to humble yourself to me *

* I ain't your church or your king *

* I said, baby, *

* You know I ain't no Queen of Sheba *

* *

* May not even have our dignity *

* Could be a powerful thing *

* I said baby, we can choose, *

* You know we ain't no amoeba *

* *

* Are you ready for the thing called love? *

* Don't come from me and you, *

* It comes from up above *

* I ain't no porcupine, *

* Take off them kid gloves *

* Are you ready for the thing called love? *

* *

* I ain't no icon, honey, carved out of soap *

* Sent here to clean up your reputation *

* Baby, honey, you ain't no Prince Charming *

* *

* We can live in fear or act out of hope *

* Some kind of peaceful situation *

* I said, baby, honey, *

* Why is that cry of love so alarming? *

* *

* Are you ready for the thing called love? *

* Don't come from me and you, *

* It comes from up above *

* I ain't no porcupine, *

* Take off your kid gloves *

[applause]

Thank you so much.

[soft music]

* *

I'm glad to be here on Valentine's

Day celebrating love.

I'm very honored to be able to play this next love

song about a love that's slipped away,

with my friend Chris Martin.

Anybody out there with a hurting heart out there,

that's going out to you.

["I CAN'T MAKE YOU LOVE ME" PLAYING]

* *

* Turn down the lights, *

* Turn down the bed *

* Turn down these voices *

* Inside my head *

* Lay down with me, *

* Tell me no lies *

* Just hold me close, *

* Don't patronize *

* Don't patronize me *

* 'Cause I can't make you *

* Love me if you don't *

* You can't make your heart *

* Feel something it won't *

* Here in the dark, *

* In these final hours *

* I will lay down my heart, *

* Feel the power *

* But you won't, *

* No you won't *

* I can't make you love me *

* *

* If you don't *

* *

* I close my eyes *

* So I don't see *

* The love you don't feel *

* When you're holding me *

* And the morning will come, *

* I do what's right *

* Just give me until then *

* To give up this fight *

* And I will give up this fight *

* *

* I can't make you love me *

* If you don't *

* You can't make a heart feel *

* Something it won't *

* Here in the dark, *

* In these final hours *

* I will lay down my heart *

* And I'll feel the power *

* But you won't, *

* No you won't *

* I can't make you love me *

* If you don't *

* *

Thank you, Chris and the Roots.

Thanks, everybody.

Thanks to "SNL" for putting me on so many times.

Thank you.

- Oh, man.

[applause]

- Yeah.

That was it? I'm up?

Hey, Chevy.

Hey, buddy.

Am I going? Hey, everybody.

How about that? It was unbelievable.

Bonnie Raitt.

She played that one.

We were on the show, our cast, man,

and I remember watching that and being blown away.

That was beautiful.

And, man, this is a great night.

I can't tell you.

I can't not say thank you to Lorne.

All of us.

Let's give it up to Lorne again.

[applause]

He doesn't like that.

He's not enjoying that.

But come on. Thank you.

Thanks for Lorne.

If it wasn't for Lorne, we wouldn't have

this incredible night tonight.

We love you, buddy.

We all love you.

Come on now.

Yeah Lorne, we appreciate everything

you did for all of us, pal.

Love you, pal.

Thank you.

OK.

All right, you guys.

And I gotta say a big thank you to Kevin Nealon

for paying for this.

Kevin Nealon.

Give it up for Kevin Nealon.

He's paying.

All right, so I'm going to do this.

My cast, besides Bonnie, we saw the next--

these next guys play while my cast was there,

and it was an explosive moment for all of us.

It changed it all.

Three guys rocking out in a way no one

had ever seen before, led by a young badass

who we will never forget.

But the music will live on forever.

Ladies and gentlemen, Post Nirvana.

[applause]

["SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" PLAYING]

* *

-* Load up on guns, bring your friends *

* It's fun to lose and to pretend *

* She's over-bored and self-assured *

* Oh, no, I know a dirty word *

* Hello, hello, hello, how low *

* Hello, hello, hello, how low *

* Hello, hello, hello, how low *

* With the lights out, it's less dangerous *

* Here we are now, entertain us *

* I feel stupid and contagious *

* Here we are now, entertain us *

* A mulatto, an albino, *

* A mosquito, my libido, yeah *

* Hey *

* I'm worse at what I do best *

* And for this gift, I feel blessed *

* Our little group it's always been *

* And always will until the end *

* Hello, hello, hello, how low *

* Hello, hello, hello, how *

* Hello, hello, hello, how low *

* Hello, hello, hello, how low *

* A denial, a denial *

* A denial, a denial *

* A denial, a denial *

* A denial, a denial *

* A denial *

[applause]

Thank you.

[ELVIS COSTELLO, "RADIO, RADIO"]

* Wonderful radio *

* Marvelous radio *

- Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello.

My name's John Mulaney.

Yeah, finally a fucking name on this show.

Finally, at long last, I'm going to talk

for 30 minutes and then sing "Touch of Gray"

by the Grateful Dead.

[laughter]

Real quickly, I just want to say, I keep thinking.

Tonight how much Hal Willner would love to have been here.

And--

[cheering]

--I miss that dude every day.

He would have loved so much of tonight,

and he also would have hated parts of tonight,

and I would have loved to talk to him

about the parts he hated.

I can't believe that this weekend is the 10th

anniversary of "Saturday Night Live's 40th

Anniversary Special."

It's crazy how the time goes by.

You know, the original plan in 1975

was to have no popular music and no hosts

and just do sketch comedy and be canceled within six weeks.

When I was a writer here, I once

went to Lorne Michaels office, and I asked him earnestly

and sincerely to please cut the second song by Linkin Park

to make room for one of my sketches.

[laughter]

And he said, we don't do that.

And thank god he won that argument.

Can you imagine if we didn't get that version of "Bleed It

Out" at 12:45 in the morning?

It is an honor to bring up the pop star that other pop

stars wish they were and the only music

icon that I can dance like.

Ladies and gentlemen, Robin and David Byrne.

[cheering, applause]

["dancing on my own" playing]

* *

-* Somebody says you got a new friend *

* *

* Does she love you better than I can? *

* *

* This big black sky over my town *

* *

* I know where you at, I bet she's around *

* *

* Yeah, I know it's stupid *

* But I just gotta see it for myself *

* I'm in the corner *

* Watching you kiss her *

* Oh, oh *

* I'm right over here *

* Why can't you see me? *

* Oh *

* *

* I'm giving it my all *

* But I'm not the girl you're taking home *

* Ooh *

* I keep dancing on my own *

* I keep dancing on my own *

-* I'm just going to dance all night *

- Come on

* *

-* So messed up, I'm all out of line *

* *

* Stilettos and broken bottles *

* I'm spinning around in circles *

* I'm in the corner *

* Watching you kiss her *

* Oh *

* *

* I'm right over here *

* Why can't you see me? *

* Oh *

* *

* I'm giving it my all *

* But I'm not the guy *

* You're taking home *

* Ooh *

* I keep dancing on my own *

* I keep dancing on my own *

* *

* So far away, but still so near *

* Lights go on, the music dies *

* But you don't see me standing here *

* I just came *

* To say goodbye *

* I'm in the corner *

* Watching you kiss her *

* Oh *

* *

* I'm giving it my all *

* But I'm not the girl you're taking home *

* Ooh *

* I keep dancing on my own *

* I keep dancing on my own *

* I'm in the corner, *

* Watching you kiss her *

* Ooh *

* Oh *

* I'm right over here *

* Why can't you see me? *

* Oh, me *

* I'm giving it my all *

* But I'm not the girl *

* You're taking home *

* Ooh *

* I keep dancing on my own *

* I keep dancing on my own *

[cheering, applause]

* *

* I keep dancing on my own *

[cheering, applause]

["THIS MUST BE THE PLACE" PLAYING]

* *

-* Home is where I want to be *

* Pick me up and turn me 'round *

* I feel numb *

* Born with a weak heart *

* I guess I must be having fun *

* The less you say about it, the better *

* Make it up as you go along *

* Feet on the ground *

* Head in the sky *

* It's OK *

* I know nothing's wrong, nothing *

* Hi yo, *

* I got plenty of time *

* Hi yo, *

* You got light in your eyes *

* And you're standing here beside me *

* I love the passing of time *

* Never for money *

* Always for love *

* Cover up and say good night *

* Say good night *

- Back!

* *

Yeah!

* *

* Home is where I want to be *

* But I guess I'm already there *

* I come home *

* She lifted up her wings *

* I guess that this must be the place *

* I can't tell one from another *

* If I find you or you find me *

* There was a time *

* Before we were born *

* If someone asks, *

* This is where I'll be *

* Where I'll be *

* Hi yo *

* We drift in and out *

* *

* Hi yo, *

* Sing into my mouth *

* Out of all those kinds of people *

* You got a face with a view *

* I'm just an outlaw looking for a home *

* A chance and space *

* For a minute or two *

* And you'll love me *

* Till my heart stops *

* Love me till I'm dead *

* Eyes that light up *

* Eyes look for you *

* Cover up the blank spots *

* Hit me on the head *

* Ooh, *

* Ooh, ooh, ooh *

* Ooh, *

* Ooh, ooh, ooh *

* Ooh, *

* Ooh, ooh, ooh *

[cheering, applause]

- Give it up for David Byrne!

- Robyn!

The Roots!

[cheering, applause]

- Dearly beloved, please welcome Beyoncé and Prince.

* *

[cheering]

- Hey.

How's everybody doing?

Ooh, look at Prince.

He's so shy, y'all.

[laughter]

Prince wants y'all to know that he splurged on the potstickers

stickers backstage.

[laughter]

He also had some delicious flatbread pizza with corn.

[laughter]

He topped all that off with some microgreens and

a very hot honey tea with a Minnesota lemon.

[laughter]

Prince was wondering if anyone had a Pepcid AC or a Tum

in their pocket book.

No?

You got one, Tiffany?

I'm gonna get you after the show.

[laughter]

Oh.

Prince says he needs it right now, but he can wait.

[laughter]

Ooh, Prince also says that he has something

very important to say.

What is it, Prince?

- Ladies and gentleman, Cher.

[cheering]

["IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME" PLAYING]

* *

-* If I could turn back time *

* If I could find a way *

* I'd take back all those words that hurt you *

* And you'd stay *

* I don't know why I did the things I did *

* I don't know why I said the things I said *

* Pride's like a knife *

* It can cut deep inside *

* Words are like weapons *

* They wound sometimes *

* I really didn't mean to hurt you *

* I didn't want to see you go *

* I know I made you cry *

* And, darling, if I could turn back time *

* If I could find a way *

* I'd take back all the words that hurt you *

* And you'd stay *

* If I could reach the stars *

* I'd give them all to you *

* then you'd love me, love me *

* Like you used to do *

* If I could turn back time *

* My world was shattered *

* I was torn apart *

* Like someone took a knife and drove it deep in my heart *

* When you walked out the door *

* I swore that I didn't care *

* But I lost everything, darling *

* Just so I could tell you I was sorry *

* Too proud to tell you I was wrong *

* I know that I was blind *

* And, darling, if I could turn back time *

* Well, if I could find a way *

* I'd take back all that words that have hurt you *

* And you'd stay *

* If I could reach the stars *

* I gave them all to you *

* Then you'd love me, love me *

* Like you used to do *

* Oh *

* If I could turn back time *

* If I could turn back time *

* If I could turn back time *

* If I could turn back time *

* If I could find a way *

* I'd take back all the words that have hurt you *

* If I could reach the stars *

* I'd give them all to you *

* And you'd love me, love me *

* Like you used to do *

* If I could turn back time *

* Turn back time *

* If I could find a way *

* And baby, baby, baby *

* You'd stay *

* *

[applause]

Thank you for being here.

Thank you so much.

Thank you.

[cheering]

Yes!

-* I'll always be thinking of you *

* I'll always love you, though, New York *

- Hello.

Dave Grohl gave me his gloves backstage.

I'm sorry if I look like The Weeknd.

I'll make it quick.

Everyone, please welcome my favorite artist in the world,

Lady Gaga.

[cheering]

["shallow" playing]

* *

-* Tell me something, girl *

* Are you happy in this modern world? *

* Or do you need more? *

* Is there something else you're searching for? *

* I'm falling *

* In all the good times, *

* I find myself longing for change *

* *

* And in the bad times, I fear myself *

* *

* Tell me something, boy *

* Aren't you tired tryin to fill that void? *

* Oh, do you need more? *

* Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore? *

* I'm falling *

* In all the good times, *

* I find myself longing for change *

* *

* And in the bad times, I fear myself *

* I'm off the deep end *

* Watch as I dive in *

* I'll never meet the ground *

* Crash through the surface *

* Where they can't hurt us *

* We're far from the shallow now *

* In the shall-- shallow *

* In the shall-- shall-- *

* allow *

* In the shall-- shallow *

* We're far from the shallow now *

* Watch as I dive in *

* I'll never meet the ground *

* Crashed on the surface *

Give it up for Mark Ronson and the Roots tonight.

-* In the shall-- *

* shallow *

* In the shall-- shallow *

* In the shall-- shallow *

* We're far from the shallow now *

* *

[cheering]

Thank you so much.

I love you, Thank you.

[cheering]

- Oh, my goodness!

Come on!

Lady Gaga!

[cheering]

That's how you do it!

[applause]

Oh, my goodness!

All right, everyone.

I just have to say, Chevy Chase, thank you

so much for everything, buddy.

Without you, there would be no "Saturday Night Live," buddy.

You're the best.

I love you so much, buddy.

You're the greatest.

Thank you for everything, buddy.

I love you.

[applause]

Of course!

That's the one-and-only Chevy Chase!

[cheering]

Wouldn't be here without you, buddy.

[applause]

We're getting ready for Jack White right now.

He's setting up right now, so they told me--

No, get ready. No, get ready.

Yeah, this is, like, the end of the night,

stand up in your seats, go crazy.

It's gonna go crazier than--

Well, what a night!

I don't even know what to start with!

Sandra, what did we start with?

It was Lauryn Hill!

It was unbelievable!

Nirvana?

Did that happen?

That was unbelievable!

Bonnie Raitt?

Will and Ana?

Oh, my gosh!

Everyone crushed it!

It was unbelievable.

I remember just coming to rehearsal today, going,

just don't be so out of breath after you do Blues Brothers.

[laughter]

You've gotta do more cardio, Jimmy!

You've gotta get on that bike, man!

But I was so lucky to be able to rehearse

there with The Roots, and it just sounded so good all

night long!

Man, oh, man!

Who else can do that?

[cheering]

No one else can do that!

[applause]

Should I walk around?

I know I'm not supposed to be walking around and showing

you this, behind the scenes.

But, hey, there's a dozen people streaming on Peacock

right now, and they're looking at this.

We're setting up for--

That's Jack White.

I see him walking around.

We're getting ready for him.

Oh, Jon Hamm in the house!

How are you doing, buddy? You're the best.

Good to see you.

Oh, Jason Momoa!

This is insane.

Maya, great job. Paul Rudd!

Oh, my God!

You've been great dancing the whole night, by the way.

I love you.

This is unbelievable. Oh, yeah.

Get ready.

They're getting close.

They're getting close to getting set up.

Oh, my gosh!

I'm just so excited.

I don't know what the story is gonna be tomorrow,

but I'm, like, every single thing I've seen, I'm like,

how hot is Cher?

Are you out of your mind?

What the hell happened?

[applause]

What in the heck was that?

All right, we're ready to go.

Guys, get up right now.

Just get up, because it's gonna be unbelievable.

It's worth it.

Get ready.

And you've been an amazing crowd, by the way.

How about everybody up there?

Yo!

[applause, cheering]

You've been great all night!

Thank you for crushing it, everybody!

Ladies and gentlemen, Jack White!

[applause, cheering]
